Annual Report 2013-2014

The Bay School Mission and Philosophy At Bay, we balance challenging academics and innovative thinking… We cultivate intellectual entrepreneurs. We design our curriculum to enable students to take ownership of their learning in an environment of high academic expectations. Students critically evaluate nuanced ideas from multiple perspectives and generate meaning for themselves. They craft creative solutions to real-world problems and come to understand their ability to effect meaningful change. …with a mindful approach to learning and life. We see the challenges of adolescence as critical catalysts for personal growth. We teach students habits of reflection and discernment that enable them to navigate those challenges and discover who they are. Our students learn to think carefully and act deliberately, while considering the experiences and perspectives of others. The practice of mindfulness permeates all aspects of school life, fostering a thoughtful and cohesive community. Our goal is to see students unlock their individual and collective potential… We challenge students to take risks. Our students learn to respond to setbacks gracefully, knowing that failure is often a step in the direction of success. They gain confidence in their own abilities and appreciate the value and richness of collective effort. Increasing levels of academic and personal autonomy enable students to discover their passions, pursue their interests and test their limits. …so they begin to realize their roles in a dynamic world. Because Bay understands that life doesn’t come with a syllabus, we instill students with the courage and good humor necessary to flourish in an unpredictable world. Looking beyond the walls of the school, our students develop an emerging sense of their own purpose in order to become engaged global citizens.

Dear Friends,

It is with pride and excitement that we present this annual review of the progress of our thriving school. Over ten years ago, the founding board of trustees and a courageous head of school crystallized an ambitious strategy, located a promising school site in the Presidio and sought the financial resources to found a unique independent high school. The bold mission of this new school was to develop the capacity of young women and men to help them become capable and ethical activist-citizens who would eagerly engage with complex challenges and opportunities in the future. To execute this distinctive mission, the school painstakingly recruited highly-regarded, innovative teachers from around the nation and charged them to create a forward-thinking educational program, taking into account the most current research related to cognition, motivation, problem-solving and ethical development. Today, a decade after The Bay School opened its doors to the first class of 53 pioneering students, the school has achieved many important milestones. Bay’s enrollment has experienced healthy growth to more than 320 students, yet the school has retained its core values and commitment to thoughtful innovation and an inclusive community. The faculty have constantly refined the academic core for 9th- and 10th-graders and expanded a diverse array of almost 80 electives, from Astrophysics to Advanced Painting, Climate Change and Hinduism. Recent expansion of opportunities in the arts, computer science, engineering design and robotics have further enriched our distinctive program. A constant in virtually every Bay School class is an explicit connection to real-world complex questions and issues which defy simple solutions. This 2013-14 school year was especially successful. The capable admission team again activated students, parents and faculty to enroll another class of 85 able 9th-graders into the class of 2017 from 45 middle schools. Similarly, the graduating class of 2014, the largest in the school’s history, completed challenging Senior Signature Projects and also gained admission to many of the most selective colleges and universities around the country.

An unprecedented number of students participated on stage or behind the scenes in various tech roles in the musical and two dramas at the professional Southside Theater at Fort Mason. Similarly, more than 70% of Bay School students participated on one of 26 interscholastic athletic teams. Student-generated and student-led service and leadership opportunities continue to cultivate strong student voices and perpetuate community values. Less visible to the community has been the sustained commitment and critical work of Bay’s 21 trustees. From strategic planning to careful stewardship of the school’s financial resources, our highly engaged Board members, including long-serving members Greg Wettersten and Cary Fulbright, whose terms have just concluded, have strengthened the school. Special gratitude is due to Kathleen Patterson, whose three years of service as Board chair has been especially compassionate and impactful. Similarly, Amy Talbot proved to be an inclusive, effective leader of the Parent Guardian Association. Finally, I would like to thank so many members of the school community for their generous support of the school. Whether volunteering time and skill at school events or on committees or by supporting the school financially, all of you have enabled our school to thrive and enter its second decade with strong momentum.

Sincerely,

From the President of the Board of Trustees Dear Friends, This past year was a tremendous success for Bay, with the school achieving – ahead of schedule – many of the Board’s Strategic Initiative goals. With the engagement of our entire community, Bay reached the enrollment goal we had set for 2015 and achieved record levels of giving to the Annual Fund. In addition, we refinanced the school’s original construction debt on a long-term, tax-exempt basis; streamlined the school’s corporate structure; and acquired the master lease for our building at 35 Keyes Avenue, ensuring the school’s home for the next 50 years. These milestones were achieved with the support of our banking partner, Dirk ten Grotenhuis at First Republic Bank; the extraordinary commitment of finance committee chair, Greg Wettersten; the leadership of Tim Johnson; and the generosity of our Trustees and a small group of dedicated friends of Bay. On behalf of the Board, I thank you all for your role in these important outcomes. You have demonstrated, once again, that our Bay family is our greatest asset. The strength of our community also has been a powerful draw to the group of strong candidates who have been considered by our Search Committee as potential successors to Tim Johnson in July 2015. As we hoped and expected, a diverse group of highly qualified men and women have expressed interest in this exciting opportunity at Bay. It has been gratifying and inspiring to be a part of this important process of choosing the next leader for Bay. In June, the Board also welcomed new leaders. Joining us as trustees this year are Molly Dwyer (parent, Class of 2017), Jennifer Kroner (parent, Class of 2016), Ann Dickerson Lind (parent, Classes of 2016 and 2018), Darlene Mann (parent, Class of 2017), Greg Price (parent, Class of 2017), and Victor Kazanjian (Executive Director, United Religions Initiative). Our new Board colleagues each have deep experience with non-profit organizations, and passion for Bay and its mission. Collectively, their backgrounds include expertise in law, technology, education, finance, marketing, strategic planning, mindfulness practice and cross-cultural, multi-faith peace work. Individually, they bring unique skills and diverse perspectives to our work. Finally, as I stepped down in June from my three-year term as president of the Board of Trustees, we welcomed trustee Shyam Lal as my successor. I know that Shyam feels, as I do, that it is an honor and privilege to serve this remarkable school and community. As Bay enters its second decade, we look forward to the exciting years ahead!

Sincerely,

Kathy Paterson President, Board of Trustees

EX OFFICIO

Timothy W. Johnson Head of School,

Amy Talbot PGA President,

From the President of the Parent Guardian Association I am pleased to report that Bay’s 10th anniversary year was yet another great year for the Parent Guardian Association. Everyone’s collective efforts helped shape what has become a thriving and productive organization, supporting the staffulty in boundless ways as the school continues to grow and shape the future of education. Guided by the hard working and always helpful staffulty, our army of parent/guardian volunteers provided service in almost every facet of school life. In the library, in the Glass Gallery, in the performing arts studios, in the admission and development offices, on our sport fields, behind the scenes at Bay Splash, on community service outings, in the basement organizing spirit wear and in the kitchens warming scones for staffulty appreciation breakfasts, so many of you spent countless hours with remarkable attention to detail making for a fun, festive and successful year of all things Bay. Special thanks go to our fearless class coordinators who spent hours organizing get togethers and keeping us all connected. We also said goodbye to some steadfast volunteers who spent all four of their years at Bay building committees that flourish today. Their leadership provides a platform for continued growth and innovation. Thank you! In closing, I would like to thank every parent/guardian who worked with tireless devotion and enthusiasm this year. It has been a privilege to work beside such a dedicated and a dedicated and and joyful group of people. Onward to another great year of teamwork!

Sincerely,

Amy Talbot Parent of Clare, Malcolm and Stan Roediger ’16 President, Parent Guardian Association

CULTURE OF GENEROSITY AT BAY: THE NEW MANSON-HARTZELL SCHOLARSHIP FUND

The Bay School exists today because of the generosity of Bay’s founding families over ten years ago, and those who have joined the community since. Last year, anonymous and devoted friends of The Bay School made an extraordinary gift to the school. We are pleased to announce the Manson-Hartzell Scholarship Fund, named in honor of Bay’s Founding Head of School Malcolm Manson and Founding Asst. Head of School Dennis Hartzell. These funds will enable the school to recruit, enroll and underwrite Bay tuition and fees for highly promising applicants from underserved Bay Area communities. The first student cohort will join the ninth-grade this fall. The total scope of this dramatically impactful gift will be approximately $2.5 million over seven years.

IN MEMORIAM OF A BELOVED BAY COMMUNITY MEMBER: TAYMOOR BEN-HALIM ’10

The Ben-Halim family is another remarkable example of the spirit of generosity at Bay. Taymoor Ben-Halim entered the Class of 2010 at Bay as a 9th-grader. He joined the Bay School community after he had already been diagnosed with a rare form of cancer. His classmates, teachers and advisors stayed close by his side and were particularly compassionate and supportive during a most difficult time for Taymoor and his family. Taymoor had a witty sense of humor and was a profoundly generous young man, whose love for life and loyalty to his family and friends inspires until this day. He was a gifted artist that used his talent to express his passion for life and beauty. After a very long and brave battle, Taymoor passed away in December 2012, leaving behind the fondest memories and passionate works of art by which loved ones could remember him. Inspired by the Bay community’s tremendous academic and emotional support, Taymoor’s family decided they wanted to give back in a way that would honor their beloved son and help The Bay School, a truly deserving community, to fulfill its aspiration to offer tuition assistance to deserving students. The Taymoor Ben-Halim Scholarship Fund will fund four years of tuition and fees, and will begin with a deserving student entering the Class of 2018. Taymoor’s parents, Hany and Haya Ben-Halim, hope to inspire others, and the recipient of the scholarship in particular, to value giving back to one’s community – especially a deserving community that is built on pure compassion such as the Bay School.
