The founders of The Bay School envisioned a school focused on the future – not only the immediate future of college and adulthood, but also an increasingly interconnected world where change and innovation are the norm. As the school enters its 10th year of offering a dynamic education, Bay students continue to ask difficult questions, think critically and take a thoughtful, intentional approach to learning. With your support, The Bay School is able to realize these goals. We hope you will enjoy this special 10th anniversary Annual Report, in which we honor community members whose foresight and generosity have helped to shape The Bay School. As you page through, look for stories from three key founders and five founding faculty members, and a snapshot of each from the school’s first year. Along the bottom of each page, follow the school's timeline, which covers interesting moments from the Presidio’s founding in 1776 to today’s 10th anniversary celebration and everything in between. We commemorate all that our community has accomplished so far; we recognize those who have moved on, Former Associate Head of School Dennis Hartzell and the Class of 2013 among them; and we celebrate the beginning of our 10th inspiring year.

The Bay School Mission and Philosophy

At Bay, we balance challenging academics and innovative thinking… We cultivate intellectual entrepreneurs. We design our curriculum to enable students to take ownership of their learning in an environment of high academic expectations. Students critically evaluate nuanced ideas from multiple perspectives and generate meaning for themselves. They craft creative solutions to real-world problems and come to understand their ability to effect meaningful change. …with a mindful approach to learning and life. We see the challenges of adolescence as critical catalysts for personal growth. We teach students habits of reflection and discernment that enable them to navigate those challenges and discover who they are. Our students learn to think carefully and act deliberately, while considering the experiences and perspectives of others. The practice of mindfulness permeates all aspects of school life, fostering a thoughtful and cohesive community. Our goal is to see students unlock their individual and collective potential… We challenge students to take risks. Our students learn to respond to setbacks gracefully, knowing that failure is often a step in the direction of success. They gain confidence in their own abilities and appreciate the value and richness of collective effort. Increasing levels of academic and personal autonomy enable students to discover their passions, pursue their interests and test their limits. …so they begin to realize their roles in a dynamic world. Because Bay understands that life doesn’t come with a syllabus, we instill students with the courage and good humor necessary to flourish in an unpredictable world. Looking beyond the walls of the school, our students develop an emerging sense of their own purpose in order to become engaged global citizens.

This annual report recognizes the many members of our school community who have contributed to many dimensions of the school’s success. Because of the contributions of thousands of volunteer hours and as a result of hundreds of financial donations, The Bay School is thriving. On behalf of present and future students and their families, I want to express sincere appreciation for the generosity of so many. As a young school, we have only a small number of alumni and their families to augment our budget with financial support, so we are reliant on our devoted current families to do the heavy lifting.

We are indebted to hundreds of parents, guardians and friends who have rolled up their sleeves. Liz Paxton’s effective leadership of the Parent Guardian Association and Kathy Patterson’s thoughtful leadership of the Board of Trustees had a big impact on the quality of school life last year. The school bid an appreciative farewell to several community members, but especially to two exceptional community leaders. Associate Head of School Dennis Hartzell, whose extraordinary 10-year tenure crossed multiple roles, was critical to the evolution of The Bay School. Dennis has moved on to become Head of School at Montana Academy with our best wishes. Similarly, Joe Sherman, a key member of the founding trustees and passionate supporter of the school, leaves the Board after three impactful terms. Finally, I want to pay special thanks to the passionate and skillful women and men of the staffulty for their extraordinary commitment and devotion to their students. Their work with our recent graduates and all the students who will follow them is inspiring. Our future is bright. Thank you for your extraordinary support.

How did The Bay School come to be?

Then it got to the mid-’90s, we convened a board and took a deep breath. We went to work, and it was very slow going. Then the dot com bust happened, and we had this meeting in 2001. Craig Severance, who was on the board, said, “Commercial real estate in San Francisco” (which was his business) “is in the tank, and if we’re ever going to look for a site, now would be the time to do it.” When we were leaving that meeting, Gigi Coe said to me, “That was really exciting.” I said, “Yes, it looks as if we might actually get a school after all these years.”

I became the headmaster at Cathedral School for Boys in 1990. In 1991, the board chair and I put together a scheme to start a coed Episcopal high school, which we took before the board. Eventually the board said to me, “Malcolm, if you’ve got time to do this, go ahead with our blessing. But the Cathedral School is not going to do it.”

Somebody had this very bright idea, which was: Let’s choose a date. The date we chose was 2040. Let’s ask the question what a wise leader would need in terms of skills and attitudes and understanding and general background that they should be getting at high school. That really galvanized the meeting, and right out of the box came science, technology, stewardship of the planet, ethics and bioethics, which got us on to global ethics and matters of diversity. It was terrific.

Then somebody said, “What about religion?” We were very much committed to religion as a world force, but we were unwilling to sign up with any specific religion. The issue remained controversial until the school opened, but eventually we said, “Let’s stop talking about it and just do it.” And that’s what happened.

From the President of the Board of Trustees

For The Bay School, 2012-2013 was a year of great momentum as the Board of Trustees oversaw the implementation of the Strategic Initiative’s financial sustainability goals. We ended the year with a strong balance sheet and took important steps to build a firm financial foundation for the future of the school. We enter our 10th year with great confidence and enthusiasm. The school sustained record giving levels to the Annual Fund and at Bay Splash. We would not have been able to raise these funds without the deep commitment of our Bay volunteers and dedicated staff of our Development Office. On behalf of the Board, I thank our community for this tremendous – and tremendously important – support. As a result, every program at Bay has grown stronger. It is with pleasure that I welcome our new trustees: Shyam Lal, Max Ruston and Jim Sano. We also look forward to working this year with Amy Talbot who, as President of the Parent Guardian Association, joins the Board as an ex officio trustee. They each bring rich experience to their roles and their work on behalf of Bay. Finally, it is with gratitude that I acknowledge our outgoing trustees: Joe Sherman, Bay founder, parent and generous friend; and Charles Gibbs, global peaceworker and wise counselor. They gave their time, treasure and expertise to our Board and school. Their contributions will be remembered and appreciated for years to come. It is our hope that their good works will inspire others to contribute and lead. I speak for the entire Board when I say it is an honor and privilege to serve this school. What led you to become involved with Bay’s founding?

For me, the idea of Bay emerged from my professional experience hiring interns and staff in a technical field. This is the home of Hewlett-Packard; this is the home of Apple computers; this is the home of social media. Yet, the Bay Area did not have a school with a tech or science focus. f e o o u c nd gi in gi Another reason I got involved stems from an experience I had in a world religions class at MIT. The class was always very hard to get into and jam-packed. I looked around and thought, “Here are all these people who are in these intense science courses, who are going to become engineers, become scientists, go into the tech world. They’re hungry for an experience in which they learn about world religions.” I felt that we tended to compartmentalize, we tended to silo those parts of our lives. bo

The third piece came out of work I had done as a regulator. I was the director of strategic planning at the State Public Utilities Commission and was very active at the time of the collapse of Enron and WorldCom. I subsequently worked at MCI during the WorldCom/MCI merger. At some point, the head of the Federal Reserve Greenspan got up and testified before Congress and said that what we need is financial literacy. And my response was, “No, we need ethical literacy. We should be teaching ethical literacy to our young adults.” s

From the President of the Parent Guardian Association

Looking back at this past school year, I am profoundly grateful to all the parents and guardians who helped make this community a better place. We kicked off the year with a name change and became The Bay School Parent and Guardian Association – a title that better reflects our inclusive community. All year long, our fearless class coordinators helped us all make new friends and reconnect with old ones. The Staffulty Appreciation Committee continued its good work of providing snacks for faculty meetings, and the Admission Ambassadors organized an army of volunteers to stuff envelopes and staff open houses. Friends of The Arts at Bay (FAB) provided outstanding support for academic and cocurricular arts, coordinating the "Portrayal Portraits" exhibit in the Glass Gallery and selling refreshments at play intermissions. Special events throughout the year helped build community and maximize involvement. The annual Winter Potluck was a resounding success, filling the Great Room with sounds of good cheer. The community service outing at the SF Food Bank was at capacity, and the spiritwear team broke all previous sales records at the Class of 2017 Welcome Event in April. Countless volunteer hours went into producing our annual Bay Splash fundraiser, which proved a fun, festive and wildly successful evening. It was my privilege and great pleasure to be the head of the Parent Guardian Association last year and to be able to work with all of you – the amazing parents and guardians in our community. Senior Signature Projects

The Senior Signature Projects program provides all 12th-graders with the opportunity to design and complete a project in a field about which they are passionate. The program emphasizes depth of study and mastery in a field, independent problem-solving and risktaking. The Presidio is transferred to the National Park Service, ending 219 years of military use.

The founding Board holds a retreat at the Tides Center in the Presidio. The question is posed: “What skills would a wise leader need in 2040?” The Bay School starts to take shape.

How did Bay end up in the Presidio?

We then went into a preliminary letter of intent to acquire a building on Second Street – two or three blocks just north of AT&T Park. We ended up not being able to enter into a contract on that building, and we walked away. So by January 2003, we still had no money and no building.

Two members of the board at that time, John Clawson and Simon Snellgrove – both successful, well-regarded real estate professionals – came to a meeting in what was then The Bay School office down Embarcadero in the old Department of Agriculture building. John and Simon brought to this meeting a document issued by the Presidio Trust, an RFP for 35 Keyes. We had a very spirited – in fact, quite contentious – discussion about whether that building made any sense. There was a quite legitimate concern that if we were here in the Presidio, in this corner of the city, that we would not be able to make good on those promises that we would be accessible to all kinds of families and kids and communities. The opposite position was that the geography didn’t matter; what mattered was the commitment to creating the school that we wanted to create. i at e h e a d o f

Actually, the original site for The Bay School was the old corporate headquarters of Esprit, down in China Basin just south of the UCSF Mission Bay campus. But the dot com bubble burst in 2001, and the fallout from that in 2002 meant that those donors no longer had the resources to meet the pledges they had made.

We ended up very far apart on whether this building made sense as the future home of The Bay School. I actually went home that day and thought, “It’s not going to happen.” We came back two days later and sat down. Malcolm turned to the five of us and said, “We’re going to do it. I want to start this school.”

November 2001 The name officially becomes The Bay School of San Francisco.

I like that kids are totally fine being as quirky, as jock-y, as drama-y, as nerdy as they want to be. I think early on, people like Miles, Katherine, Colin and Darrick showed kids you don’t have to specialize in one thing. You can be excellent at a lot of different things, and sometimes those things seem counterintuitive, seem like they’re not going to mesh. You can be an art teacher and a physics teacher. You can be a music teacher and a humanities teacher. You can be a drama teacher and a humanities teacher. I think that has given kids license to feel comfortable pursuing what they want to pursue and has created an environment where they are comfortable to try things that maybe they wouldn’t feel comfortable trying if they didn’t have adults in the community modeling that you can do a number of different things; you don’t have to be set on one path. al Dea b i n n Co

What do you see as Bay’s role in the world of education? an

This year, we have two teaching fellows test piloting a possible program for Bay to actually become an incubator for young, promising teachers. I don’t know of many schools in the country that are doing that. We’re doing all of these cool things in the classroom in terms of really modeling collaborative learning. A lot of schools throw around the word “constructivism” like “a constructivist approach to learning,” but not many schools actually do it. I think we do it really well. Across the curriculum, everything is inquiry-based. Exposing new teachers to that model so they can take it to other schools – that’s really powerful. That way, Bay’s leaving its stamp on other educational institutions.

What was it like to build a library from the ground up? The school didn’t have a building or anything, and they wanted to hire a librarian. That was huge. Malcolm didn’t have to do that. He could’ve waited until we had a facility, but he thought it was important that we have a librarian from the very beginning. When I got the job, Malcolm said, “You’re not going to have a library the first year. You won’t even have a room or anything.” The way that the old building was, I was in the hallway on the second floor. Anyone who ever wanted to walk through anywhere on the second floor – which was where all the classrooms and teachers’ offices were – had to walk by me. I had 250 books, and my office was in a hallway.

Then we moved into our new library, which has a capacity for 11,000 items. Once we had the space, my budget doubled, and I was in a book-buying frenzy. My office didn’t have any of that cozy furniture; it was just tables with piles and piles of books. And because of where the [new] library is located – in a central place on the first floor right by the entrance – it’s a really warm, inviting space. The library has always been really well supported by the school financially and culturally.

What do you remember about the opening day of school?

I’ll never forget the very first day of school. We were in that little house in the woods over by the horse stables near Crissy Field. Our founding head of school, Malcolm Manson, stood up in front of our 60-some-odd inaugural students and parents and said, “Welcome to The Bay School.” He said, “The first thing I want to do here today is to read our precepts. I want our students to read our precepts.” I remember thinking to myself, “Oh my gosh, I don’t know if this is going to fly.”

With hardly any hesitation, one student stood up and read our very first precept like she was the proudest woman on earth. One student after another read our founding precepts that are still the foundation of what we stand for and strive for here at The Bay School. It was a very, very powerful moment for me and it actually drew tears to my eyes. All of us founding faculty and staff who worked really hard to put The Bay School together had worked all summer, and to see it come together that first day of school was really intense and a really neat moment. 16

Over that first summer the founding class had to read “Haroun and the Sea of Stories,” which is a cool novel by Salman Rushdie. There’s a scene in the book when they’re in this place called Moody Land that reflects the emotions of the people who are in it. Malcolm asked the kids for their first meditation moment to close their eyes and think about what the cafeteria (where we all were gathered) looked like because of all of our energy.

Right before that first class graduated in June 2008, we walked them back over to the old building and had a closing circle. That moment came back to me as we were sitting in that circle. On the first day I had thought that there was all this unknown. In the closing circle, I thought that if you closed your eyes and felt the energy of the room, it just felt like home. It felt so safe. I think that is my favorite part about the school; I think that’s the most incredible part of what happened. That’s what makes Bay Bay.

The new Project Center at 3 Funston opens. The school’s original vision of a strong engineering and design program comes to fruition. More art studio space becomes available.

Nearly 70 percent of students compete on a Bay athletic team. Each and every student stays active through after-school athletics practice or activities such as high-performance training or aikido.

The number of colleges to have accepted Bay graduates rises to 325. Members of our first six classes have matriculated at Yale, Brown, Princeton, MIT, Stanford, UC Berkeley, Wellesley, Duke, Bowdoin and many more.

A record 321 students arrive on campus for the new school year.

Bay commences its teaching fellowship program. Representatives from 154 colleges visit campus. Staff and faculty welcome new members with original ballads at weekly meeting.

Malcolm told me a great story. Somebody was once walking across the Golden Gate Bridge, when all of a sudden he was in the middle of the bridge and the fog rolled in. And we know what that means. All of a sudden he realized that when he looked down, he could not see what he was standing on. He could feel that he was standing on something solid, but he could not see what was actually supporting him. When he looked behind him to see where he had been, he couldn’t see it. When he looked in front of him, every now and then as the fog swirled he would get a vague glimpse of where he was going.

Of all the stories that Malcolm has told, that’s probably my favorite. In a local metaphor that anyone can understand, I think it really described what it was like for me in those first couple years. We didn’t always know what we were standing on, but we knew it was relatively solid.

One tradition that I’m glad has continued is the tradition of Morning Meeting. At the old school, we also had something called the Great Room, but it was a living room basically – a really cozy space. I remember when Malcolm referred to it as the Great Room, I thought “this room doesn’t seem that ‘great’ to me! It’s kind of small, but OK” [laughs].

What aspect of school life do you hope will always continue?

I remember when we first did the tour of 35 Keyes. It was in the early summer – I think it might’ve been June. This building was still under heavy construction, and Father Malcolm assured us that it would be ready by the start of school in August. I remember looking at the blueprints for this building. There were lots of pictures of these envisioned Bay students within the space. I remember when I saw the space that was going to be the Great Room, and I was like, “Wow. If it looks like it does in those pictures with envisioned Bay students, this will be great!”

The Great Room and this communal gathering space is one of the traditions I’d like kept.
