Dear Bay Supporters, It is a distinct honor as one of the newest members of the community to share with you this Annual Report. I follow in the footsteps of many Bay pioneers who have established this institution of innovation and mindfulness in an educational landscape that is so often mired in the past. My predecessor, Tim Johnson, expertly guided The Bay School through the end of its first decade and into its second, and the results are telling. Already in my short time here I have witnessed the strength and vibrancy of our mission, our community, and our people. The Bay experience comes to life in a multitude of ways, from innovative curricula to myriad opportunities outside of the classrooms. The depth of offerings, from electives to Intersession, particularly impresses me. Through Morning Meeting and authentic relationships with faculty and staff, our students push through preconceived notions and begin to reimagine their own evolving role in the larger milieu of the world. Critically, none of this happens by chance. What first appealed to me about Bay was its community; a close second was the alignment between its mission and what actually happens day to day inside our classrooms and beyond. Both elements are highly purposeful in nature. The school’s intentionality in how we design and bring to life your child(ren)’s experience is one of its greatest strengths. And, this intentionality is equally present in how we treat the generosity of spirit, time, and resources from our many volunteers and supporters.

Farewell and Thank You to Tim Johnson, Bay’s Head of School 2009-2015 It has been an honor and a privilege for the Bay community to have Tim Johnson as Head of School over the past six years. Tim was the right leader at the right time, not just to navigate a young school through a turbulent economic downturn but also to lead it to an amazing inflection point a decade since its inception. By any metric or observation, Bay has arrived and has made an indelible impression on its students, staff and faculty, and within the broader middle school and high school communities in the Bay Area. Bay is stronger than it has ever been – be it in admissions, college placement, student satisfaction, staff and faculty quality and impact, and in the school’s reputation. For that we owe Tim, the staff and the faculty a debt of gratitude. As we look ahead to the decade to come, we will miss Tim’s gentle leadership style. He has led from behind, has amazing power of suggestion, allowing others to succeed and grow while keeping the school on course towards a clear set of goals. We have all learned much by watching Tim in action. Tim is more than a retiring head of school who has made a big difference. He is more than a collaborative colleague. He is more than an empathetic and caring leader. He is a legend for us at Bay and his legacy is testimony to it. We count Tim amongst our founders and we are so fortunate to have had him in our midst.

At the heart of this work are the people of Bay. What motivates individuals in education to dedicate so much of their lives to their students and their school? When asked about their career choice, many in education refer to it as a calling, a desire to serve the greater good. As a teacher myself, I appreciate beyond words what a powerful learning relationship between student and instructor can achieve as well as the infrastructure that must be in place to support this essential work. From the Chair of the Board of Trustees Bay entered its second decade in 2014-15 as an established and highly regarded school, with remarkable momentum and promise. Much has been accomplished in a short time and there are so many to thank – visionary founders; an exemplary faculty and administration who continue to go beyond expectations every day; a community of parents, guardians and friends generous with their ideas, time and resources. Above all, we have a spirit of conviction that is, indeed, rare. Thank you all. We would not be where we are without each of you. The past year also brought with it the retirement of our beloved Head of School Tim Johnson. Tim was the right leader at the right place at the right time. He joined the school just as the major global economic downturn hit and helped keep a very young institution steady and growing, true to its founding principles and yet adaptive to a rapidly changing environment. We are grateful and excited to welcome our new Head of School, Luke Felker. Last year, both Luke and Tim invested significant time and effort to ensure a smooth transition. We are fortunate to have Luke’s vision, energy and commitment at our helm and we look forward to his leadership in the years to come. Bay was awarded a full seven-year accreditation from CAIS/WASC (California Association of Independent Schools and Western Association of Schools and Colleges) this past spring. This is an endorsement of our honest self-reflection and a measure of Bay’s progress in its first decade. Our enrollment for 2015-2016 exceeded all expectations reflecting great interest in Bay and what we offer. Under Colin Lind and Andrea Nagelson’s inspiring leadership we established a new record in giving in both dollar amount and participation to the Annual Fund. The Board successfully launched the early phases of a strategic planning process and an endowment campaign, both essential building blocks for enhancing Bay’s programs, continuing its strong trajectory, and ensuring its success moving forward. In June, the Board welcomed new members: Liz Hale, Virginia Paik, Fletcher Payne, and Amy Talbot. Our new Board colleagues each have deep experience with non-profit organizations combined with a passion for Bay. Collectively, their backgrounds include expertise in education, development, finance, marketing, strategic planning, and cross-cultural and global experiences.

From the President of the Parent Guardian Association Since its inception, parents and guardians at The Bay School have played a pivotal role in creating a dynamic sense of community. Eleven years later we can proudly say it is no different. During the 2014-15 school year, hundreds of parents played active roles on a variety of committees, and as mentors and guides for Bay School students. From admissions to the arts, development, community service and event planning, parents helped organize and execute events from open houses to Bay Splash to educational roundtables, potlucks, speaker series; sell Spirit Wear, mentor seniors through their Senior Signature Projects and take time to appreciate our wonderful “staffulty.” What makes Bay so unique among parents and guardians is the fundamental sense of belonging from the day school starts. The culture of kindness and inclusion that pervades the hallways of Bay flows into the parent/guardian community promoting participation and volunteerism effortlessly. In fact, there isn’t a day at The Bay School where you won’t see parents/guardians participating in the life of the school – in big ways, in small ways, in school-changing ways and in quiet individual ways. It is a place where inclusion is valued and where it actually happens in a natural, unforced way. Bay is a place where people are grateful to be involved and to give of their time and talent to make the school the very best place it can be.

In June, we also bid farewell to long-serving trustees Bruce Armstrong, Cynthia Bengier, Stephen Mattoon and Brian Thomas. Their contributions have been innumerable and immeasurable, in some cases existential, and we will forever be grateful. In addition, we also said farewell to Victor Kazanjian who will stay affiliated with Bay in ways that his demanding international travel schedule allows.

I want to extend a heartfelt thank you to every parent/guardian who worked with such devotion and enthusiasm this year, everyone who brought a little more joy to the campus, everyone who said, “Yes! I’ll help.” It was a pleasure and privilege to work with all of you. Onward to 2015-16 and to our second decade of excellence!

After an eventful first year of our second decade, we look ahead with excitement, aspiration and a strong sense of accomplishment.

Years at Bay

That meant a new job search. As Lori recalls, “I found Bay’s website through a Google search. I knew about many independent schools in the Bay Area, but I was totally taken by Bay. It was my dream of what a school should be.” One phrase in particular resonated with Lori. “The line that especially struck me on the website was that ‘people here laugh a lot.’ There’s something about a school that promotes rigorous study and joy synonymously.” With that, Lori applied for a Humanities position at Bay, interviewed, and taught a demo lesson at the year-old school. “I did my lesson at the little house and thought, ‘Wow. This classroom is as diverse as the public school I’m teaching in, the experiences are as diverse…and yet, this is an independent school environment that is putting kids first.’ When I left Bay after that demo lesson, I felt like I was leaving a new home.”

The students at Bay, however, made it all worth it. “The students then were taking a risk on a school, just like we were. I feel particularly indebted and endeared to those students. We were all a little rougher around the edges then – in a good way.” Though it’s been 10 years since Lori first began working at Bay, her experience continues to be rewarding. “I am blessed every day to do what I love. I might be tired or cranky coming to work on occasion, but there’s not a single day I don’t love my job. The thing that I say to my students at the end of every trimester is just that: may they be blessed to do what they love.”

Teaching just a few Humanities classes, however, didn’t satisfy Colin. “I made it my goal to teach every core Humanities class at Bay. I taught Humanities 1 and 2, US History, Writing Workshop. I think it’s an unreasonable goal, because we keep changing our offerings, but that’s actually really great.” Though it’s hard to narrow it down to one favorite class, Colin says that his most memorable teaching experience was teaching Hinduism. “The students got so into it. That was the class I got most excited about. One memory that especially stays with me was when one student came back to Bay as an alum…he told me that when he was at a crossroads and didn’t know what to do, he would start to recite the Sanskrit shlokas that we had learned in class, and it would calm him down and focus his mind. Hearing that as a teacher…it doesn’t get a whole lot better than that.”

At Bay’s founding, Lori Cohen was in her sixth year of teaching Humanities at a large public school in Sacramento. She always knew, however, that she wanted to return to her roots in the Bay Area. So Lori prepared to move back to San Francisco and closer to her family in 2004.

Indeed, Bay became Lori’s home at the beginning of the next school year when she joined the Humanities faculty. Lori’s first year was, as she notes, “…really exhilarating. It was my seventh year teaching. I had the best collaborative colleagues I had ever had in my career, and I was energized by this job on a daily basis.” Working at a young school also meant facing some unique challenges. “The school was in its infancy, which meant that we were doing everything. We weren’t only designing curriculum and programs, but also deciding traditions and policy,” says Lori.

Later that year, Colin was asked to cover a colleague’s Humanities classes when she was on medical leave. That turned into a full-time teaching gig, which, as Colin says, “was my absolute dream. I had wanted to teach Humanities since my freshman year of high school.”

On his first day of school, he says, he was “…very nervous. But I met these two astonishing young bass players, Jake and Daniel ’09. They said, ‘Oh, wow, this is going to be awesome!’ And I thought for a second, and I said, ‘This IS going to be awesome.’ And it was!”

After graduating from college and teaching for a year in New Orleans, Colin Williams decided to make a change. He headed to San Francisco and reconnected with his friend Moneeka Settles, who was working at the then-one-year-old Bay School as the Dean of Students. It just so happened that Bay needed a quarter-time music teacher, and Colin fit the bill.

After 10 years of working at Bay, Colin is most excited about the school’s renewed commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion. “Really trying to be intentional about how to make Bay a safe and comfortable place for everyone makes me feel better about Bay than I ever have before…and I already felt pretty good about Bay! Father Malcolm’s original goal was to make Bay a place where kids can bring their whole selves to school, and together we’re bringing that vision to a new level. That makes me really happy.”

Celebrating Our Faculty and Staff

In 2004, Andy Shaw was teaching math at a boarding school in Massachusetts. Being young and single in the middle of nowhere wasn’t ideal, and he began looking for something different. That search brought him to Bay. As Andy remembers, “When I first interviewed at Bay, it was to start that very first year. I came out and interviewed and there was no school – just the little house in the Presidio. Ryn Blecke (founding Academic Dean) asked me, ‘How do you think math

should be taught?’” For Andy, the answer was to make it handson and constructivist; Ryn and Father Malcolm, the founding Head of School, agreed. Even so, Andy wasn’t quite ready to leave his current position. Joining the faculty of a not-yet-opened school with a lot of unknowns seemed too risky. But, midway through Bay’s first year, Andy changed his mind. He gave Ryn a call, and revisited the young school. It was then that Andy had a new experience with Bay. “Somehow, I had missed the piece about meditation,” he says. “My first real introduction to Bay was showing up for Morning Meeting, and seeing the whole school sitting quietly. That really floored me. That was a significant moment for me.” Andy quickly signed on to teach math in, as he calls those early years, “…this chaotic little utopia.” As he notes, “The first years were indescribable. We talk a lot these days about big-picture curricular change in the math department, and how we’re trying to stay true to our ideals while making sure the program works for all kids. In the early years, it was all day-by-day. There were lots of late nights of Dave [Wang] and I saying, ‘This didn’t work, what can we do differently?’ Or Dave coming to me and saying, ‘I had this great class today! Let me tell you about it so you can use it in your class.’” After a few years, Andy’s fascination with curricular changes brought him to a new role: Academic Dean. “Being Academic Dean has been all of the things I hoped and feared it would be, amplified. The reason I wanted this job was because I love what we do here, and I wanted to see and touch more of it. As the Academic Dean, I have all the conversations about all the curricula and all the departments. I don’t always have the right answer, but it’s really gratifying to be the one facilitating these conversations.” At the heart of these conversations? Continuing to take important risks to create a truly 21st-century educational experience. This resonates with Andy: “What I most hope for Bay for the next 10 years is that we will continue to be bold and brave. That’s true in every area of the school, but I think about it in mostly curricular dimensions. We’re in a unique period of renaissance right now. We’re established enough as a school where we can pursue things that may run the risk of being misunderstood, but we have the strength and track record to be a leader in curricular change. At our core, Bay has always been about being brave enough to do the right thing. My hope is that we continue to keep that spirit alive and well.”

We asked a few of our dedicated supporters, and here’s what they had to say.

How did you and your family first become involved at Bay?

Jim Sano and Susan Buren How did you and your family first become involved at Bay? In a way, we were very lucky. Since we live in San Rafael, applying to one of the powerhouse Marin schools seemed like the obvious choice for our son. Truth be told, Bay was not necessarily our first choice when we began the process. When Will ’12 was waitlisted at his first choice, only then did we take a hard look at Bay and thought it might well be a good fit for our son and our family. Will enrolled, and within a month, we were enchanted by Bay’s nurturing and accepting community, its graciously brainy teachers and coaches, and by the humanity and wisdom of its curriculum. Will graduated from Bay in 2012 a mature, thoughtful, intellectually adventurous young man; he was accepted to Brown University and is now a rising senior studying biology. You joined the board after your son graduated? Why? When our son graduated from Bay, I also transitioned from being the CEO of Geographic Expeditions for 23 years and serving as a Trust for Public Land board member for over two decades. I had zero experience in education. However, when asked, I jumped at the opportunity to sustain the kind of brilliantly unusual experience my son had at Bay. I arrived eyes wide open, eager to learn about cutting edge education. And, shortly after I arrived, Tim announced his intention to retire and I found myself on the Head Search Committee with Lori Cohen, Dorothy Jones and a brilliant group of trustees. This was truly a life-expanding experience that reaffirmed our view that Bay’s approach to educating our children and fostering an inclusive community is truly unique and special. Why do you continue to support Bay? Bay graduates young women and men who are equipped and inspired to be good and productive citizens of our world. It allows students to “germinate” at their own pace, and develop into curious, life-long learners, without many of the academic and

Our involvement started when our son, Oskar, decided to attend high school at Bay. We were impressed by the warmth and kindness of the community of students, parents, faculty and staff. The Bay School is a place where students can feel very comfortable to be themselves; we felt that this is a rare gift for teenagers today. As parents, we found it easy to make friends: in short, we all felt at home here right away.

social pressures that pervade some other schools. Additionally, as a young school, Bay’s tuition assistance program truly sets it apart and has created a student and family community that is unlike any we’ve ever experienced in the other independent schools our children have attended. My wife Susan and I have watched many schools reflexively compete to build the fanciest facilities; Bay, on the other hand, is most comfortable supporting enriching programs—programs accessible to all, rather than a privileged few. We’re proud of Bay’s values, its freedom from social stratification. We admire how it effectively encourages students to challenge themselves by trying new—rather than predictably resume-enhancing—things. Bay is interested in people, not prodigies. An incoming 9th grader doesn’t have to be a virtuoso, or a highly accomplished club or select athlete. When Will attended Bay, some of his soccer teammates had barely played the sport before. The no win-at-all-cost fosters teams with camaraderie and parental support thanks to coaches like Matt Hannibal. Bay didn’t have a state-of-the-art field to practice or play on, but it did have a commitment to enjoyment, good, ebullient sportsmanship, and the kind of character-building that teaches that there’s more to life than a relentless focus on winning. You and Susan have offered to make a planned gift to Bay. Why a planned gift, and what does that mean exactly? Ours is a legacy gift. We want to leave something behind to help Bay advance its mission and culture. Our philosophy—our passion, really—is down-the-line identical to Bay’s. We want to support promising young adults, help them pursue their careers and dreams—for their own sake, and for the sake of the larger society. Sending two kids to independent schools, and then to private colleges, was a stretch and it’s a huge commitment. Making a significant philanthropic gift is not feasible for our family at this time in our lives. So making modest contributions to the annual fund and a planned gift is the best way for us sustain the short and long-term future of the Bay School. Anne, what compelled you to join the board; and Colin, why did you become so involved with the Annual Fund at Bay? Anne: I wanted to join The Bay School board to help the school move from the “start-up” mode of its first decade, to a more established institution without losing its unique and special spirit. The Bay School is a different kind of school – it offers students a safe and kind place to be themselves, and it fosters self-confidence and individuality. I appreciate that the most important asset of the school is the people – the students and the faculty and staff. Yes, the campus is beautiful and the setting spectacular, but it is the human capital that really makes Bay unique and special.

Colin: I wanted to get involved with the Annual Fund at Bay because I believe in the mission of the school. I love the young, entrepreneurial quality of Bay and wanted to help it reach the next level of sustainable annual support from the community. I am excited to bring some new ideas to the school – educating our parent body about the importance of our Annual Fund and create strong interdependence among all the stakeholders. Why do you support Bay? We support The Bay School because we understand that the school needs everyone to do their part in maintaining and sustaining the school financially. It takes all of us to give what we can. The Bay School runs a lean and careful budget and has made many hard sacrifices over its short history. We feel fortunate to be the beneficiaries of the years when many stakeholders had to take great risks in order for us to be able to be here now. We are supporting the school today so that the next generations of students will reap the same benefits as our current classes. Can you talk about what inspired you to make a gift to Bay’s endowment? It’s another way to build upon a strong community. We feel that this is a great investment in the future of education. We believe strongly in supporting our hard-working faculty and staff. As the school grows, we need to make sure we are continuing to deliver high-quality education for all 21st century learners as well as support and expand our core of teachers and staff.

Legacy Gifts to Bay There are many ways to support The Bay School in addition to the Annual Fund and Bay Splash. Have you ever considered the following: Bequests in Your Will Planned gifts are often thought of as leaving a legacy that benefits future generations of Bay School students. Planned gifts include gifts of cash, securities, or property provided in the donor’s will. A planned gift enables you to make a positive financial difference for you and your family, while also making an important gift to Bay. Designated Beneficiary of Retirement Plans Significant savings of both income and estate taxes can be achieved by naming The Bay School as a beneficiary of your IRA, Keogh, or 401(k) retirement plan. Other Deferred Gifts It is possible to make gifts of property that may allow tax benefits for the donor during his or her lifetime, may be used during the lifetime of the donor, and which would revert to The Bay School, with possible estate savings. Why Give to Bay? CONTINUED Cynthia and Gary Bengier How did you and your family first become involved at Bay? We were introduced to The Bay School by two founding trustees whom we knew personally. This was long before our son was even of age to apply, so looking for a high school for our son didn’t have anything to do with it initially. We also had read something in the Chronicle talking about this new “science school” which we found intriguing. We immediately fell in love with the mission of the school, in particular that Bay embraced a new kind of education, one that focused on world cultures and a balanced approach to learning and life. When we first visited Bay, it was in another Presidio building while 35 Keyes was being remodeled. We were very impressed by the Morning Meeting, the focus on what students need to learn and know for the 21st century, the overarching value of diversity, equity and inclusion, and the sense of community, among many other things. We also deeply appreciated the school’s commitment to tuition assistance, which is what we initially decided to support. Cynthia, what compelled you to join the board? I was really excited by the direction the school was headed in and by the fact that Bay wasn’t an established entity. I thought I could make an impact on a young organization. Gary has worked in several start-ups over his career, and Bay felt like a start-up at that time which I found really challenging and exciting and full of potential. And again, I was very inspired by what I saw early on. It’s such an amazing gift to be able to provide teens with an exceptional education, and one that includes developing a deep awareness of oneself, and learning to appreciate and respect others for the unique things they bring to the table. I found the Bay community open to accepting new people and new ideas, and it fit with my personal philosophy of work hard and enjoy a balanced life.

Why were you interested in supporting the Project Center? We loved everything about what the Project Center was envisioned to be in the early stages: a place to explore deeply, to help kids be able to pursue their interests, to provide space to offer engineering, robotics, senior projects, sculpture…in essence to be “tinkerers.” Design Thinking, which is the model by which engineering courses are taught at Bay, is an excellent model for life. What worked well? What didn’t? How can students revise based on what they’ve learned so far? Those are very “Bay” concepts.

The Bay School is forever grateful to Gary and Cynthia Bengier for their generous gifts of time and resources to further the mission of the school. In honor of their generosity, the Project Center was recently renamed the Bengier Project Center.
