WELCOME

Welcome What a delight it is to be involved in this wonderful Festival, one of the world’s most important celebrations of children’s literature. This literature lies at the beating heart of our culture. It is where stories have their start, and where literary culture is constantly renewed.

T

he children’s book world is a dynamic, experimental, optimistic place. The people who work within it really do believe that books and all forms of art can change people’s lives and make the world a better place. Without fine children’s books, there would be fewer adult readers and fewer properly mature adults. The world would be a meaner place. Children’s literature resists easy classification. There are beautiful blends of pictures and words, and books without any words at all. There are books with holes in them, books that squeak and flash. There are tales that explore the depths of human emotion, books of the harshest realism, books that take us to fantastical new worlds. There are books filled with poems and songs and information. Like children themselves, children’s books can be hilarious and troubled, barmy and profound, and are in a constant process of change and growth. Bath will be an exciting place this autumn. Come along to our festival. Meet our wonderful authors and illustrators. Be inspired by today's children, who really do read, and who are active, creative and engaged young citizens. Discover this fascinating world. D avid Almond Guest Artistic Director

BIG BATH READ

Kids Big Bath Read 2014 — Chris Riddell’s Goth Girl and the Ghost of a Mouse Meet Ada Goth — only child of the gloomy Lord Goth and resident of enormous Ghastly-Gorm Hall. Lord Goth believes that children should be heard and not seen, so Ada has to wear large clumpy boots so that he can always hear her coming. This makes it hard for her to make friends and sometimes, Ada is rather lonely. Until William and Emily Cabbage come to stay at the house, and together with a ghostly mouse called Ishmael, they and Ada begin to unravel a dastardly plot that Maltravers, the mysterious indoor gamekeeper, is hatching. Join our Kids Big Bath Read this summer and enter Ada’s wonderfully weird and gothic world! Copies of the book will be available at Bath Central Library, as well as Midsomer Norton, Radstock and Keynsham Libraries. Don’t miss out on meeting Chris Riddell at the Festival, on Saturday 4 October, where he will talk about the second book in the Goth Girl series, Goth Girl and the Fete Worse than Death. YOUNG CURATORS

Young Curators Our story so far . . .

W

e are a group of ten students from Wellsway School in Keynsham who absolutely love books! Over the past two years we have had the opportunity to meet loads of authors, earn our Bronze Arts Award and also (our personal favourite) help organise and run The Telegraph Bath Children’s Literature Festival for 2013. In our first meeting, we were lucky enough to meet David Almond, the Festival's Guest Artistic Director, and talk to him about what would be going on at the festival, and from there, we got stuck in as much as we could, including creating the Young Curators Choice Logo to highlight our favourite Festival events on the website, programming events and reviewing books. Along the way, we also managed to achieve the Bronze Arts Award which we are all really proud of as this took a lot of time and effort to achieve, but we are all glad we did it! We are now working towards our Silver Arts Award. This year we have programmed two weekday discussions for young people, we will be posting reviews of Festival books and events, interesting articles and details of our activities on our Young Curators Blog. We will also be at the Festival at different points, participating in events, selling tickets, introducing events and looking after authors so please do come and talk to us about our experiences and the Festival. So how do these routes measure up, and what are the relative merits of academic training versus professional experience in the field?

The Opening Night Debate – The Future of Teaching 7 — 8pm Guildhall Tickets £8 / A2 Adult What sort of teachers do we need? Few would dispute that education is essential to society and the economy — and that education unlocks doors for individual children to realise their potential. But what makes a good teacher, and why do successive Governments disagree on the best way of delivering education?

Join Anthony Seldon, historian and headmaster of Wellington College, writer and journalist Fiona Millar, Sam Freedman, former advisor to Michael Gove, and Darren Northcott from teachers’ union NASUWT, for a discussion about the future of teaching and teacher education. This debate coincides with the launch of the Institute for Education at Bath Spa University, a new venture that builds on the University's long history of teacher education, and puts it at the forefront of the national campaign to improve the education of all our children. Everyone remembers a good teacher —  or do they? Presented by our Creative Partner

LEARNING & PARTICIPATION

Outreach Programme Key Stage 3 and 4 We have a number of exciting authors available to visit your school during the festival to spark and inspire young imaginations and offer fascinating insights into the world of writing books. This year’s programme starts with Benjamin Zephaniah, speaking about his first novel in 7 years which tells of how one boy’s idealism and passion to speak out is distorted and manipulated by those who want to commit acts of terror. He is followed by Matt Dickinson, author of the Everest Files, inspired by his own climb to the ultimate summit and Holly Bourne, who will lead a series of workshops where students will have the chance to pose those burning questions about writing, young adult fiction and careers in journalism to someone with first-hand experience of their aspirations. Lucy Inglis will take us back to eighteenthcentury London in her novel, City of Halves and Philip Womack talks about his new book, The Broken King, in an interactive session to get the audience thinking creatively about how to get characters in and out of dangerous situations. We end the week with a focus on literature in translation. Nadia Budde, a German writer, will be speaking about her work and life as a writer and illustrator in Germany and Sarah Ardizzone, translator of an illustrated book by French artist Barroux, which was inspired by a First World War diary he found in a Paris skip, will be leading a very special translation workshop where students can produce their own version of words written a hundred years ago.
