Cross Campus Principal James Penstone reveals the Student Representative chosen to visit Antarctica with explorer Robert Swan Bangkok Patana is an IB World School, accredited by CIS and NEASC

Mr James Penstone, Cross Campus Principal

R

ebecca Leiler (Year 10) and I are going to represent the Bangkok Patana School Community on a ten-day expedition to Antarctica this coming March (2017). This is an incredible opportunity for our school but how did it come to be? Robert Swan (OBE) will be one of our keynote speakers at the educators’ conference for Global Citizenship which we are hosting at Bangkok Patana on the 20th and 21st October. Robert is a polar explorer who was the first person to reach both the North and South Pole unassisted. He has made it his lifelong mission to raise awareness about the future of Antarctica – “Earth’s last Wilderness” – and, in so doing, raise awareness of the environmental threats facing the planet at large. He will give a presentation to all of our academic staff as well as visiting educators from outside of the school. On the afternoon of Thursday 20th October he will also deliver a similarly inspiring presentation to parents and students from Year 3 upwards. Please give yourself the chance to hear this inspirational man by signing up here if you haven’t already done so. To prepare for his visit, we had a Skype conversation with Robert before term started. He told us that if we were to really make his visit have a lasting impact, we should send one member of staff and one student from the school on his International Antarc-

tic Expedition. This is a major annual event for his wider 2041 organisation and one which helps to fulfil the following mission:

The real purpose of the expedition is to help connect present and future leaders from countries across the world and help them to become life-long advocates for Antarctica and the environment in general. Through attending, participants immerse themselves in the ‘leadership on the edge’ programme, learning from global experts on today’s issues of climate change and energy use while undertaking life lessons on leadership and team building. Following our Skype chat with Robert, Matt Mills asked me to represent the staff, given that I lead our environmental portfolio here at the school. Then, two weeks ago, we carried out a rigorous application process to select the right student from Year 9

upwards. In Round 1, applicants had to submit a written application before they could reach Round 2, which involved a formal interview with Jackie Houghton, Kirsten Bennett and myself. All seven students who made it to Round 2 really impressed us with their passion and commitment. It was a very tough decision to make, but I am very happy to introduce Rebecca Leiler in Year 10 as our chosen Bangkok Patana Student representative. Here is a short interview with Rebecca.

Please tell us a little about yourself. I am a Year 10 student who has been at Bangkok Patana for five years. Before then, I attended schools in China, Germany and South Africa. I live with my Mum, Dad, sister (Year 11) and brother (Year 4). I consider myself extremely passionate. I am strong willed and very dedicated. How did you feel when you heard that you had been selected to represent Bangkok Patana’s students on the IAE 2017 expedition? I felt as if April Fools’ day came a few months early. After the initial shock wore off, I was over the moon and was very humbled to have been chosen. How did your family react? The reaction that I got from my family was disbelieving yet endlessly proud. What are your friends saying about you going on the expedition? My friends are ecstatic for me, when speaking to them you get the impression that they’re the ones actually going.

Why do you think this expedition is so important? The world is changing very quickly before the human race and generation after generation ignore the messages our Earth is sending. We mistakenly think the next of kin will be the ones to clean the mess up. I believe in immediate action and taking responsibility and, by doing that, preserving the places on earth that need our help the most; Antarctica being on the top of my list. Image Reference: https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/e/e8/ Antarctica_(7),_Laubeuf_Fjord,_Webb_Island.JPG

You are representing all of Bangkok Patana’s students for this experience. How do you think you will do that? Bangkok Patana stands for raising responsible Global Citizens. I strongly believe with this expedition I represent the spirit of our school of raising global awareness for the preservation of our planet, for generations to come. What three things are you looking forward to most in this experience? Stepping foot on the elusive sixth continent; Going as close as can be to the ‘end’ of the world; Experiencing the world on my own. What do you expect the three main challenges to be ? I embrace all the challenges that come my way and tackle them head on. However, the biggest challenge I feel that I will face, would be the travelling.

What are you planning on doing to prepare for the expedition? Sleeping in the Austrian mountains in winter. Educating myself about polar expeditions and learning more about Antarctica, particularly of the environmental impacts. How will you cope with the rest of your school life, now that you have this huge opportunity before you? Improve my time management, giving up some of my leisure time, during the steps and preparation time. What do you expect to happen when you come back from the expedition? Other than a hug? I want to keep preserving Antarctica and help fulfil Robert Swan’s vision. How do you think this experience might change you? I think this experience will further boost my confidence and enable me to tackle future challenges cast my way.

Varsity Boys’ Football vs Ruamrudee International School On Monday 12th September the Bangkok Patana Varsity Boys’ Football team took on RIS. An hour before the match the tension was building up in the changing room. The whole team knew we needed a strong three points to start the season. As the Varsity Boys were warming up, the players knew that it was crunch time and that as a team we would either make it or break it. Mr Osborne alongside Coach Manibu gave the team an inspirational talk seconds before kick-off that proved favorable to the boys as well as the ‘home advantage’. It was a hefty task for team captain Kevin Wuethrich to try to prove that he could lead the team to success. The whistle blew. The Varsity Boys started the stronger team as they applied early pressure on the RIS side. Eventually the first goal came to the Bangkok Patana boys as a neat pass from Denis Sprenger was set into path of Kevin Wuethrich, who took a thunderous shot against goal which was deflected by the keeper. However, it was gobbled up by our savior Michael Nunbhakdi to put it into the back of the net and give us a 1-0 lead. Lo Sidelind was looking dangerous on the wing as he skillfully passed three players including a cheeky nutmeg, however his shot on goal was unluckily deflected out. The whistle blew and the first half came to an end with the Varsity Boys looking the better team. The boys started the second half slowly and out of nowhere RIS came back and leveled the score to 1-1. This turned out to be a tricky task for the Tigers as RIS gained confidence from their early second half goal. However, our boys didn’t give in as solid defending by James Ashford, Denis Sprenger and Dennis Kho Pablo kept the game alive. The boys started to fight back as Alessandro Kho Pablo took charge in midfield, making decisive passes. An accurate pass from Alessandro Kho Pablo was

put into Jeffery Taylor who struck the ball into the bottom left corner, 2-1 to the Tigers! Although it wasn’t to last long as RIS drew level again to 2-2 with the Varsity boys dropping their heads as the end of the match grew closer. Nevertheless, a scramble once again in the RIS penalty box fell in favor of Michael Nunbhakdi to smash it into the bottom right hand corner to regain the lead. In the dying minutes an RIS player took a powerful shot into the top right corner which was saved by our very own Kris Thongphakdi who had to fully stretch himself to save the game. As the final whistle sounded the boys had tears of joy; they had won the match and gained their first three points of the season! The Varsity Boys want to thank Mr Osborne and Coach Manibu for always believing in the team and hope it proves to be the start of becoming BISAC and SEASAC Champions! Final score: BPS 3-2 RIS (goals: Michael Nunbhakdi 2, Jeffrey Taylor 1)

Varsity Girls’ Football vs ISB On Monday September 12th, the Girls’ Varsity Football team promptly made their way to ISB to compete in a friendly game. The afternoon consisted of one 30 minute 11-aside match and one 30 minute 7-aside match. Throughout both games, the Tigers kept their composure and maintained the majority of possession, with many scoring opportunities including a free kick which was quickly tapped into the goal. However, this was unfortunately disregarded due to an offside call. Overall, the 20 defeat symbolises nothing but the beginning of a promising season! Given this was the very first match of the season, the Girls’ Varsity team is looking forward to working together in hopes for a successful NIST Friendship Tournament tomorrow as well as a win against ISB in their next match in Tiger Town at Bangkok Patana School.

Under 15 Boys’ Basketball vs Ruamrudee International School The game on Thursday 8th September was a pleasant win for the Under 15 Boys’ Basketball team. We started the game slowly with a low scoring first quarter and an almost scoreless second quarter. Even though we started out slowly, we improved our game making to give us a 32-12 win at the end of the match. As a team we need to work on limiting our unforced errors and trusting the coach’s system.

Under 13 Boys’ Basketball vs NIST After a narrow loss in our first match against RIS, the boys were keen to get their first win of the season. After some excellent early morning training, the team were looking to put their new skills to the test in a match. The game started at a furious pace with Mac making some excellent blocks in a low scoring first quarter. Slowly but surely we managed to piece our attacking plays together taking us into half time with a narrow lead. The second half was as competitive but Bangkok Patana managed to keep in front throughout to record an 1815 win. Coach Bob was delighted with the teamwork and commitment shown.

JV Boys’ Football vs Ruamrudee International School Our first league match was against Ruamrudee International School. They were not the strongest opponent, we put in strong performances all around the pitch to go 1-0 up in the first half and held the lead until the final whistle. Our goal came from a cross-field ball from Shivraj outside the box to our striker, Etienne, who placed the ball into the middle of the goal. The second half was equally as strong, but no goals were scored. The competitive game finished 1-0 to us but could easily have been 5 or 6. We did manage to score a couple of goals in the friendly 15 minutes at the end. This was a promising first match and our team was looking very cohesive already. There were many positives to take away and we are eager to carry on this form throughout the season. Man of the Match (MOTM): Niki

vs NIST We played possibly the best team in the league. We came into the game feeling nervous as we anticipated a challenging match. We started poorly and were outplayed in the first half, conceding four goals. We couldn't get into our stride and struggled to handle their attacking power. The second half was much better and our discipline improved vastly with the addition of our energetic substitutes. We managed to control most the second half and created more chances. Sam started the second half and scored a great goal, smashing the ball into the top right corner effortlessly from outside the penalty area. We conceded from a free kick towards the end of the second half and the game finished 1-5. We conceded more goals in the friendly 15 minutes at the end. This was a disappointing result and there were many things highlighted from our performance that need to be worked on, although there were some positives and good performances from many players. We will be looking to put this defeat behind us and learn from our mistakes in our upcoming fixtures against Harrow and ISB. MOTM: Sam

Varsity Girls’ Volleyball vs ASB So far the team has been getting on well, our first game against ICS went well, even though we were defeated, we saw what we needed to work on and prepared to apply that to our next game which was against ASB. The match against ASB was very good, Lita got 19 serves in a row! From our game against ICS, we saw our serve-receive wasn't too good, so Mr Watson and Coach Jang gave us some new positioning which was tricky at first, but improved our serve-receive massively. We still have a lot to work on in preparation for BISAC and SEASAC, but so far we are on track. Training has been going well and we have morning training on Thursday morning to help with footwork and agility. Our teamwork skills are getting better every week and we will continue to work on our on-court communication.

he Amnesty team held a donations collection and awareness raising event in the Secondary lounge this week. The donations received will be used to help ease the plight of refugees in Northern Thailand. They have been overwhelmed with your donations and I would like to thank you all for your support. All of the CATs have been collaborating on the planning and development of one hour workshops for the forthcoming Global Learner Conference due to be held at Bangkok Patana on 20th and 21st October. Their ideas, focus and commitment are remarkable, especially considering that this has been taking place in addition to their day-to-day CAT activities. I for one, am really looking forward to signing up to their workshops. Three of the CATs are taking advantage of the Fun Run this weekend to raise much needed funds for their community projects. I would like to take this opportunity to wish them a fantastic day whether they are running, volunteering or supporting. Habitat for Humanity, SMILE and Interact team members really do know the meaning of the words ‘dedication to the cause’.

Donations gratefully received into the wooden collection boxes near the Transport office at the front of school until the end of September.

THE BANGKOK PATANA

FUN RUN A

huge thank you to all those who have signed up to join us this Sunday at the annual Bangkok Patana Fun Run at the beautiful Ancient Siam. We have had a record number of registrations this year totaling over 1000 runners, which means even more money going to our three worthy school charities! If you have not done so already, runners t-shirts and race numbers can be collected on the morning of the Fun Run from 6:15am at Ancient Siam.

Start times for the races are: 7:00am 9km 7:10am 5km 7:20am 3km 8:20am 1.3km Family Run In keeping with the community’s efforts in school, we want the Fun Run to be as environmentally friendly as possible, so please bring your re-usable bottle to refill at the water stations. If you would rather not run with your bottle, the SEC (Student Environmental Council) will be manning a table along at the start/finish where it can be left safely. A huge thanks to the SEC for also organising and funding the replacement of the usual 5,000 plastic cups, with biodegradable cups making this year’s Fun Run the greenest ever! For more information about this Sunday’s event including how to get to Ancient Siam, click here.

Mr Andrew Tatam, Leader of Learning Primary PE

P

arents and students will be aware that we are continuing with the four Block ECA system that was introduced last year. This will once again mean an early start to our FOBISIA 2017 preparations, beginning in Block 2. The format for the Games will remain the same this year, which means that we will be selecting ten boys and ten girls from Year 5 and ten boys and ten girls from Year 6 giving us a team of 40 students. Competitors will compete in all four sports of swimming, athletics, tee ball and football across three days of competition. For those parents and students new to Bangkok Patana or those parents who have children who may just have shown an interest in the FOBISIA Friendly Games, I hope that the following information will help in any decision making that your family may need to make.

The Primary FOBISIA (Federation of British International Schools in Asia) Games is a sporting festival and competition for British International Schools across Asia. We select teams to represent Years 5 and 6 and Bangkok Patana are in a new Red Group A with an exciting selection of different schools from the region: Alice Smith from Malaysia remain in our group with the new additions of BIS Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, Taipei European School, Taiwan, Dulwich College Beijing and Nord Anglia IS Shanghai Pudong both from China. The Games will take place on either of the last two weekends of May 2017 and will be hosted by the Nord Anglia International School Shanghai Pudong in China. Please be aware that due to the destination that this will certainly not be a cheap trip and that we will be looking for families to support the extensive visa processes where at all possible.

Selection is based on a number of criteria including the overall balance of the team being selected, the

children’s performances during ECAs and various timed or measured events held during the selection process. This is an extensive time commitment and attending all of the ECAs does not guarantee selection. This year we will make an initial selection cut after Block 2 and a final selection after Block 3, which should allow those students not selected time to make alternative ECA selections of their choice. Please also note that the FOBISIA squad selection is final. If children wish to be available for selection they must meet the following ECA criteria from Block 2. Please note that there may be extended ECAs or fixtures for FOBISIA triallists and eventual team members when school transport may not be available. Parents will need to make alternative arrangements should this situation arise.

Monday:

Appropriate age group Football ECA (compulsory) – Automatic sign up when you sign your child up as a FOBISIA triallist. Tuesday: Tee Ball ECA (compulsory) – Automatic sign up when you sign your child up as a FOBISIA triallist. Wednesday: Non TigerShark FOBISIA Swimming ECA for children who are not already TigerShark swimmers. – Parental sign up required This is optional, but all children have to attend at least one of the two time trial galas during Block 2 and 3. Thursday: Athletics ECA (optional but recommended in preparation for Record Breakers on Sunday 25th February which all those who continuing with the selection process must attend unless a very good reason can be provided) – Parental sign up required. N.B. If your child is also signing up for the Production, CreaTED which will rehearse on a Thursday please let me know so that we can confirm when your child can join the Athletics in Block 3. If your child fully understands the level of commitment expected, and would like to try out, you need to sign them up for the relevant year group Girls’ or Boys’ FOBISIA Games option on the ECA sign up for Block 2, which begins on Monday 14th November.

If invited to continue trying out for our 2017 FOBISIA Team after Block 2, your child must attend Monday, Tuesday and Thursday ECAs, plus a Wednesday Swimming ECA for any non-TigerShark swimmers in Block 3. If finally selected after Block 3 your child will need to continue with their Block 3 ECAs into Block 4. If you have any questions regarding this year’s FOBISIA Games, please contact me at antt@patana.ac.th. We certainly feel that all students benefit from the process of trying out across the four sports whether they make the final team or not so would encourage your child to give it a go! Good luck to all of those Year 5 and 6 risk takers out there who are willing to take up the FOBISIA challenge for China and 2017! Yours sincerely, Mr. Andrew Tatam Leader of Learning, Primary Physical Education

here are lots of healthy eating trends but many people still feel confused about what really is a healthy, balanced diet. Here are five simple steps to help you lead a healthy life and eat a balanced diet. The following information is taken from 2015-2020 American Dietary Guidelines. 1. Choose Right Choosing a balanced diet containing a healthy number of calories can help achieve and maintain a healthy body, healthy weight, ensure you are receiving the right nutrients and lower the risk of chronic disease (Figure 1).

Weekly news from the Transport Department 

When parents/students do not cancel their afternoon bus home, it causes unnecessary waiting time for other bus users. Every day there are approximately ten Secondary students who do not inform Transport that they have made alternative arrangements. Please help to reduce this number by asking your parents to contact the Transport Department if you are not going home on the school bus.

If morning buses are not cancelled due to sickness or other reason, this can also cause the bus to wait unnecessarily and lead to a delayed arrival at school. Please help to ensure your morning bus is not delayed due to not informing the Transport team that your child will not attend school. You can go directly to the bus and let the Bus Monitor know if it is a late change of plan. Please note this message to the Bus Monitor must be from an adult not a student.

Students, please remember to check the bus before you depart to ensure that you have all of your belongings. The bus will not be able to return to your house to drop off any items. All lost property is returned to the school for collection the following day.

Contact Us The Transport Department’s direct phone number is 02 785 2470. The office is staffed from 6:00am - 6:00pm Monday to Friday. You can also contact us via email at transport@patana.ac.th

#40: Virtual Reality I’ve written before about the power of virtual reality and the impact it will have on us and our children. Here is a thoughtful post on what you can be doing to get started right now as a parent. My message with all of these things is to test it yourself and then explore the medium together. Currently at school we have ten virtual reality sets that we are using to take our students on Google Expeditions to the moon and to experience the delights of the deep ocean. After testing, we hope to extend and integrate this emerging technology into our learning landscape. Watch this space…… Have a great VR weekend! Brian Taylor

October Exhibition at the Neilson Hays Library "Between My Lines" Paintings by Sonea Rattanaruangsup 6th—30th October 2016 Opening Reception 6-8pm on October 6th 2016. The October art exhibition at Neilson Hays Library will feature work by Sonea Rattanaruangsup. "Between My Lines" is a collection that captures the impulsive nature of emotions - emotions that when triggered, can change how we perceive ourselves. All of us, at one point or another in our lives, long to tread outside our comfort zones and be somebody else.

"Between My Lines" exposes how emotions can drive us to put on certain disguises for the world while leaving our inner selves untouched. Sonea Rattanaruangsup at sonea.rsup@gmail.com or +66.92.269.5201

November Exhibition at the Neilson Hays Library Pieced Impressions Quilts by Karen Sengal 1st—27th November 2016 Opening Reception at 5pm on Saturday 5th November 2016 Pieced Impressions is a solo exhibition of quilts by Karen Sengel. Karen has been sewing since she was very young. She started quilting about 15 years ago. She began with traditional bed quilts, then moved onto to art quilts, doing this exclusively for the past 10 years. Karen tries to capture the images that have impressed her throughout her 25 years living and traveling in Asia. Many are iconic, some personal. Her quilts are traditionally pieced, then machine quilted in a free motion style which adds texture and interest. Karen grew up in New York state but has spent most of her adult life overseas as an international school teacher, primarily in Asia. She now lives in Chiang Mai with her husband and their Thai cat named Gung.
