Letter from the Secondary School A recurring theme that seems to have stood out for me this week, while members of the leadership team

are busy recruiting in the UK, is that of peer support. I have been delighted to see and hear so many examples of students providing assistance to others, albeit emotional, practical, knowledge or social. We are reaching the time when Year 13 and 11 only have 10 teaching weeks remaining before they depart on study leave and our Senior Students have been very busy sitting their trial examinations. The chatter as they ventured up the stairs to the Conference Centre was interesting to hear as they use every second to test and challenge each other, as well as make one another laugh and relax. They have helped each other through the six days of exams and this will also be an essential part of the real exam process too; it really brings them closer together as they empathise with one another, and it’s an important factor in their success in this process. Year 9s currently face the challenge of choosing their (I)GSCE options and who better to learn from than the experts? Year 10s are over 16 weeks into their (I) GCSEs and are well placed to share that very fresh experience to help inform Year 9s and to assist them in making sound decisions as to what to study for the next two years. My highlight this week was watching both the Varsity BISAC Touch and Rugby finals on Sun-

day. The Girls competed in their final first and the Boys’ support from the side lines was encouraging, loud and proud – even the coaches on the other pitches could hear the chanting. As fleeting runs and tackles were made, as well as the odd error, the support for each team, both on and off the pitch was to be admired. Before the Christmas break, and continuing into this term, the Year 12s have been busy planning and deciding what their CAS projects will be. Our students do a lot of outreach work into the wider community but offer support within Bangkok Patana too; they have planned projects such as Key Stage 4 Science mentoring and working with Year 1s and 2s developing their social skills through drama and play. One of the great things about the projects is that they are mutually beneficial and both parties benefit hugely. So it seems that everywhere I go, I find students supporting other students, within Year groups, across Year groups and across the campus between Primary and Secondary. Such relationships build the Bangkok Patana commu-

nity we know. These relationships increase students’ selfconfidence and help them understand the value of helping others; they develop sharing skills and it creates a common identity and a culture of acceptance; in addition it enables them to develop emotional resilience and a sense of well-being. You cannot overvalue the significant effect of students learning from other students. “No one is useless in this world who lightens the burdens of another.” Charles Dickens So with this in mind, I will keep

on people watching as I go about the school and support activities that help promote the healthy climate and sharing culture that we have that helps to enable our students to learn, develop and thrive. Suzanne Lindley Assistant Principal, Curriculum and Assessment

By Mike Balo, Cross Campus Assistant Principal Extra-curricular Activities and Sports Four of our six Varsity teams won their BISAC tournaments this past weekend. These are amazing results for our sports programme. Boys’ and Girls’ Tennis - Champions Boys’ Rugby - Champions Girls’ Touch - Champions In Basketball, both Boys’ and Girls’ teams fought hard and played well. Both teams finished fifth overall in BISAC.

The Thai Department offers Thai Language Classes for Adults at different levels. The registration for Block 3 is now open. Please click here for more information on each class, timings and registration links.

Dear Parents and Guardians, Each year at Bangkok Patana School the Parent Teacher Group organises Fun Day, a great community event that attracts over 3,000 attendees. This year's Fun Day will be held on Saturday 13th February from 10.00am to 4.00pm. Entrance wristbands will be available to buy in school prior to the event and at the entrance gate. Wristbands for children from Year 1 upwards will be 500 THB each but this includes access to all the rides and games on the day. Younger children and adults wristbands will be at a reduced price. The money raised on the day will be divided between the chosen charities of the PTG and to fund a range of education-related projects put forward by our students and teachers. We would kindly ask you to consider supporting this wonderful community event as outlined below: Donate a prize for the Raffle - to give you an idea, Raffle prizes could include items such as vouchers for restaurants, hotels, flights, beauty treatments, household goods, electronics, gadgets, audio equipment, sports equipment such as bikes, outdoor equipment, travel wear, toys & games, handicrafts and decorative items.... just about anything you would like to donate! Please contact Khun Goi at fundayraffle@gmail.com, if possible by 29th January. Raffle tickets will be available to buy before the event and on the day. Donate edible goods - for our air-conditioned 'Tea Room'. This is an area where visitors get a chance to rest and enjoy a cup of tea or coffee and indulge in some delicious cakes/savouries that are on sale. We rely on kind donations of baked goods, cookies, sandwiches and hot and cold drinks for this room. These can be delivered to school on the day before Fun Day to the collection point at the Front of School, or brought early to Fun Day. So please put a reminder in your diaries and get baking! ***Please note as a number of our children have severe NUT ALLERGIES we would ask that you refrain from using NUTS in your ingredients*** Please send an email to Debbie Smith, the Tea Room Coordinator at fundaytearoom@gmail.com, to advise what item and what quantity you are able to bake. Donate your time - we need a large number of volunteers on the day to help run the event. Please let us know if you could spare a few hours to help out during or even before Fun Day. Please kindly email Daphne Seiler at ptgfunday@gmail.com to let her know your availability and contact details. If you are interested in supporting Fun Day by means of corporate sponsorship, please contact Emma Goligher, Development, Alumni & Marketing Manager, at emgo@patana.ac.th for further information on the corporate sponsorship packages. Interest in the Shopping Street and Food Court should be directed to Khun Now at ptgfundayvendors@gmail.com. We look forward to seeing you at Fun Day and thank you for your kind support! Yours sincerely, Daphne Seiler Fun Day Coordinator, Bangkok Patana School, ptgfunday@gmail.com

By Sineenat Khongyoo, Nutritionist We are always looking to improve the menu options provided to our students and we provide training for our Canteen chefs and staff to learn new dishes. In January before school resumed, we organised training on vegetarian Indian food from the well -known, Bangkok restaurant Masala Art. Our staff learnt about the different spices that are used in Indian dishes and how to make basic Indian sauces that can be used for different dishes. They also tasted and learnt how to cook many different Indian dishes on the menu at Masala Art and thoroughly enjoyed this experience. Look out for the following dishes that will be included in the Primary and Secondary Canteen menus this term: Vegetarian Rogan Josh (mixed vegetable curry), Alloo Jeera (stir fried potato with cumin), Makhani (made with tofu) and Butter Chicken. We hope you enjoy the new Indian dishes.

The academic calendar for 2016/17 is available on the front of the school website or click here to view it.
