BADMINTON PROVIDES THE BEST PREPARATION FOR GIRLS LIVING AND WORKING IN A GLOBAL SOCIETY. For over 150 years, Badminton has nurtured and inspired girls to succeed in all areas of life. The small community is a powerful one, where every girl develops the skills to understand herself and the opportunities she can look forward to in a global society. Badminton girls are distinctly individual but they all share the Badminton qualities of being curious, confident and courteous.

OUR AIMS To provide an education which nurtures intellectual curiosity and which is challenging and fun, balancing academic excellence with fulfilment of individual potential in the arts, sport and extra-curricular activities. To provide pastoral care which teaches respect and tolerance for the whole community and requires each girl to take responsibility for herself and others. To create opportunities for every girl to make a contribution to the well-being of the School and engage in genuine mutual support.

The international mindset of the School aims to create an awareness of the needs and concerns of society at local, national and global levels. Badmintonians leave the School as curious, confident and courteous individuals who will thrive in a competitive, global society. CREATIVE ARTS At Badminton we know that creativity lies at the heart of a world class education. We take the time to help each student realise her unique creative potential. This builds self-confidence which will last a life time.

15

The breadth of opportunities offered at Badminton is unique. Students take fine art, graphics, textiles, ceramics and jewellery-making. They work with visiting contemporary artists. Photography, Art and History of Art are all offered at A Level.

High quality teaching and individual mentoring enable students to develop finely honed portfolios and to gain places on a range of top courses such as the London College of Fashion, St Martin’s, Oxford and Cambridge.

The Art Department is housed in the beautiful creative Arts Centre, where bright studios are accompanied by a contemporary gallery space. Here there is a kaleidoscope of exhibitions, where work of exceptional range quality can be enjoyed and celebrated by the school community and visitors alike.

Many go on to work in the creative industries including Fine Art, Graphic Design, Architecture, Fashion, Animation, Photography and Arts Journalism. Those who work in other areas take with them from Badminton a strong aesthetic sense and a confidence about visual communication skills.

Every day I am part of a creative process and I love seeing how the girls interpret ideas… It’s like nowhere else I’ve worked. I love it. Amanda, Head of Art

PERFORMING ARTS Working with others to make great drama, dance and music is life-affirming and fun – that’s why everyone has a part to play.

17

Whether it’s the Year 7 Musical, House Dance Competition or School orchestra, the thirst to participate is unquenchable. Over a third of students take individual Speech and Drama lessons with many going on to achieve diplomas in Acting and Public Speaking. This year GCSE Dance was launched alongside our GCSE and A Level Drama courses. Renowned for its quality and broad appeal, Music at Badminton is international in its approach.

Current students are members of the National Children’s Orchestra and the Bristol Pre-conservatoire. Bristol is recognised as one of the most musical cities in the UK and Badminton employs a dedicated and talented team of visiting music teachers from the locality. Over half the student body learn at least one instrument. Annually the school celebrates its musical prowess with a concert at the acclaimed venue, St George’s, Brandon Hill.

The students’ sheer enthusiasm is a show-stopper... Lucy, Assistant Head

FUTURE PL ANS The Innovation Hub

19

The creation of The Hub will enable a wide range of activities to support the work of Badminton School and it’s community. The flexible space will make a great venue to watch matches and support teams when fixtures are held on the neighbouring Astro. At other times the venue can be used for girls to host social events, some of which may be raising funds for their business enterprise or social enterprise initiatives.

The flexible seating can also be reconfigured for girls to host group meetings or run pitching invents to potential investors for their enterprise ventures, further enriching their confidence and life skills.
