What a year it has been! Even though this was the first, in the near decade since I’ve started Mini, that we’ve had to skip an issue (no spring issue for us in 2020!), we still pulled through and here we are, nine months into this pandemic, still putting together this beautiful publication for our hundreds of thousands of readers across the globe. I do hope it’s brought you a much-needed escape during these very strange and chaotic times and if you’re reading this in your car, or bathroom, for a moment of peace, or scrolling while you attempt to find some me

time— solidarity! And I appreciate all of you so much. We are so lucky to have wonderfully inspiring features in this issue to round out the year, from Jane Keltner de Valle, the founder of stunning new children’s skincare line Paloroma, to the crowned Queen of the Headband, Lele Sadoughi, to Jamie Beck, the artist mom who left her busy life in Manhattan for a year in Provence (and stayed!). Cheers to a much better 2021 and we’ll see you there!

MYERS

ON THE WELLNESS B E N E F I T S O F H E M P. . .

CBD is intimately connected to stress, as this active compound supports the human body’s Endocannabinoid System, the master regulatory system of the body that promotes homeostasis, or balance. We power our products with hemp CBD and other functionally innovative botanical ingredients that work synergistically with the human body to combat stress and maintain health. Our holistic approach ensures we are able to support our customers inside and out, with efficacious skincare, therapeutic body care, supplements, and education. MYERS

ON THE BIGGEST MISCONCEPTIONS ABOUT CBD...

There are so many! First, hemp and marijuana are the same. Hemp and marijuana come from the same plant family, but they are two completely different plants. Unlike marijuana, hemp contains high levels of cannabidiol (CBD) without the intoxicating effects. Second, CBD will make you feel “high.” Unlike THC, which is found in high levels in the marijuana plant, CBD is non-intoxicating, meaning it does not contain the properties that make you feel “high.” We say that CBD is non-intoxicating and not non-psychoactive

because CBD can impact your mood and some people feel uplifted after taking it. But at its core, CBD is a “sober” cannabinoid, meaning you won’t feel “high.” Third, if I don’t have an injury or illness, I can’t benefit from cannabinoids. You don’t have to be sick or injured to experience the benefits of cannabinoids. At Prima, we believe hemp cannabinoids are universal wellness tools, and given they don’t contain any intoxicating properties, we think everyone should take cannabinoid supplements daily. Our bodies produce their own native cannabinoids (called endocannabinoids) and cannabinoids from the plant help the body do its job better. The ECS is connected to almost every physiological system in the body— that’s why cannabinoids work for so many different issues, including sleep, stress, and discomfort of all kinds. Everyone can benefit from cannabinoids and education. GAV I GA N

ON THE DIFFERENT T YPES OF CBD...

The first thing to look for is the type of active CBD used (CBD isolate, broad spectrum or full spectrum hemp extract) and the total cannabinoid milligram content in the product. Make sure it’s hemp extract, not hemp oil, which doesn’t contain any cannabinoids. Though there is no “standard dose”, we believe that a meaningful level of cannabinoids is critical in overall efficacy.

Even more paramount is the Certificate of Analysis, which validates the cannabinoid content in the product. Most companies should have public COAs available on their website, and at Prima, we make the COAs even more accessible through a QR code on every box. Because this industry is so new, there are products on the market that list CBD on their ingredient list, but sadly when the product is tested, there is no CBD found. It is up to the brands to provide these types of validation, and we’re proud to be leading with transparency and truth. MYERS

ON ADDING CBD INTO YO U R D A I LY R O U T I N E . . .

One of the stressors I struggle with as a parent of two small children (and a third on the way), and as a working professional, is trying to navigate the impossible balancing act of doing it all, and doing it all well. There is always so much to do, and switching my brain between household planner and organizer, chef, cleaner, active listener and patient parent, as well as the demands of my work life can be extremely taxing. It can be difficult to be present and enjoy the little moments that truly are the rich fabric of life that can be so easily missed if you aren’t paying attention. I find that incorporating CBD into my day to day routine helps me take a deep breath, stay grounded, and actually

be present with my children for when it matters, giving me that extra mile of patience and perspective at the end of a long day to try and soak up this special time. It makes me feel whole, from the inside out, and a little more myself in a time when it can be so easy to lose track. GAV I GA N

Parents are continually in selfless postures— giving, planning, protecting, creating, ideating—always focusing on others and their wellbeing. As a father of four, I realized it was absolutely critical I focused on me: my body, my mental health, my sleep. Burnout is not good for anyone and drives us in compromised positions and actions, so parents need to upkeep and optimize their whole body to be better than “fine” or a baseline. I have found that bringing CBD into my life as a parent shifted my body’s balance and stress management systems, dramat-

ically reducing the body fatigue, emotional ups and downs, continual exhaustion, and everyday stressors. I’m more me, grounded, clear, focused, hopeful, and eager to be supportive to others. Giving the gift of our quality presence is a gift your children will forever cherish. GAV I GA N

ON WHAT MAKES PRIMA CBD PRODUCTS S TA N D O U T. . .

We’re the first hemp CBD brand to be a Public Benefit Corp (PBC), EWG Verified, and Made Safe Certified. We are also a certified B Corp and Leaping Bunny certified. These third party validations are in line with our values of transparency, account-

ability, and social impact. We took our decades of learnings from the healthy products and natural beauty industries to create the most elevated products to drive meaningful functional benefits to the body and skin. MYERS

ON HOW PRIMA AIMS TO REDUCE STRESS AND BRIN G BAC K BAL ANCE...

It’s easy to forget that how we feel and how we behave are intimately interconnected, and that how we show up—our actions, attitude, energy—has a dramatic impact on those around us. Stress is a social contagion and it’s a rising epidemic that needs

to be addressed in both individual health management and public health policy. Hemp and its therapeutic compounds like CBD are such a powerful tool for helping manage stress, feeling better in our bodies and gaining stronger footing beneath us so we can thrive, individually and collectively, and we need options that are safe, efficacious, and also great to use. It’s become an integral tool for my family to help us stay active, healthy, and happy. GAV I GA N

O N W H A T E V E R YO N E S H O U L D KNOW ABOUT CBD...

Integrity and consistency are the bedrock of ensuring quality. For us, that means validation and testing along every step of the path. Testing and validating immediately after extraction (and doing so with at least 2 different independent labs), testing and validating during manufacturing, and then again after it’s been bottled and packaged. We obsessively test for purity and potency, ensuring we’re always delivering a consistent level of cannabinoids and don’t have contamination from toxins like heavy metals, pesticides, and microorganisms. And for us, it’s not just enough to test, test, test. We are committed to radical transparency, and ensuring we’re making our potency results for every single batch of our products available to the consumer so you can see for yourself.

So, on every box there is a QR code that links consumers to a page where they can input the batch number and pull up the third party test results on that specific product. We believe this should be industry-standard, so consumers be on the lookout for brands that do this! Sadly, until there are better regulations and oversight, the onus is on the consumer to validate the products they are purchasing, so we make it as easy as possible to find that information to engender the trust they deserve.

How to Choose Nursery Window Treatments Wovn Home founder Davina Ogilvie shares her recommendations for selecting the perfect window coverings for Mini spaces, including why blackout linings make all the difference (Hint: well-rested babes, happy parents).

Becoming a parent is one of life’s most incredible experiences. Personally, I loved the period towards the end of my pregnancy where I began “nesting,” which included carefully preparing my home for our new family member. My son’s nursery was my main focus: A task that was equal parts exciting and daunting, especially for a first-time mom. On one hand, I knew I was going to be spending many hours in his room, so it was important to me to have the space feel stylish, inviting and cheerful. On the other hand, there were definitely some practical requirements for the nursery, such as ensuring the room was appropriately shaded from sunlight to encourage my little guy to sleep. I know many parents understand both sides of this coin, which is why I’m sharing my tips for picking window treatments for a nursery, below. OPT FOR A BL AC KOUT LINER

I firmly believe that window treatments can be beautiful and functional. And when it comes to a nursery, there’s no more important function for a window treatment than blocking the light— after all, research has shown young children benefit from sleeping in darkened rooms. Nearly all of our drape and shade styles can be lined with a blackout filter, enabling you to create a cozy sleep environment for your little one without sacrificing style. Furthermore, our lining materials are white, providing a perfect base for all of our Belgian linen fabrics. W H E N I T C O M E S T O C O L O R , H AV E A CLEAR DESIGN VISION

Drapes and shades can really set the tone for a room, so think about the aesthetic you are aiming for before choosing colors and patterns. If you’re seeking to make more of a statement, strong colors and vibrant patterns are a good way to go. Or if you’d like the nursery to feel more serene, opt for neutrals. With this noted, do keep in mind that nurseries generally have more color than other rooms in the house, given they’re usually full of books, toys and gear. Still stumped on colors? Test out some Wovn options by ordering a fabric swatch! DRAPES OR SHADES? K N O W YO U R N E E D S

When selecting window treatments for a nursery, it’s important to bear in mind the different attributes of Roman shades versus drapes. Aesthetically, Roman shades are more streamlined than drapes, making them ideal for smaller windows and spaces. They’re also a great choice for windows that have a heating or cooling unit underneath them that prevent drapes from being able to open and close easily. All of our Roman shades come with a child safety mechanism for the continuous cord, ensuring that the cord stays contained and never hangs loose. (For all about how to install our Roman shades and drapes, head here.) Drapes are usually a good choice for large windows and spaces, as they offer greater coverage and can overwhelm smaller rooms. Furthermore, given their size and scale, drapes can easily become the focal point of a given room, so keep this in mind if electing to go this route. Whatever choice you elect, window treatments will help create a welcoming space that also suit your needs for light control.

“It all started with the wallpaper,” said Mini’s Editor in Chief, Kate Kirby. “The entire design of the room revolves around this stunning Cole & Son Hummingbirds wallpaper from DecoratorsBest. The soft blue hue, playful birds, and sprawling greenery featured reflect the natural landscape just through the nursery’s windows.” Cole & Son Hummingbirds Blue Multi-Colour Wallpaper, $137.25; decoratorsbest.com SUBTLE COLOR POPS

“I didn’t want the room to feel too matchy or themed,” said Kirby. “With that in mind, we stuck to small pops of blush pink instead of attempting to coordinate with the blue wallpaper. We chose a salmon-colored throw pillow on the glider and painted the gourdshaped lamp in the palest pink, My Sweetheart by Behr.” Vera Glider in White Performance Microfiber with Gold Swivel Base, $1595; montedesign.com

NATURAL ELEMENTS

If there was a recurring theme of this nursery, it would be natural texture, like the woven Moses basket from Plum & Sparrow, or the custom ivory linen Roman shade from Everhem. Wheatgrass African Moses Basket, $165; plumandsparrow.com THE LIGHTING

“The scalloped shape of the ceiling fixture just softens the room even more.” Scalloped Shade Semi-Flush Mount, $170; shadesoflight.com

PRECIOUS ART WORK

The sweet artwork included in the nursery features the likes of a curious rabbit, pictured from the front and back, which is a quirky addition, a portrait of style icon Iris Apfel made entirely of flowers and other natural foliage from the family’s favorite destination, and a piece of baby clothing (Baby Girl Bubble from White Elephant Designs, embroidered with the baby’s name in a blush pink thread) framed via Framebridge to give a sense of the warm and fuzzies for decades to come. “I don’t often love how baby monitors can become a bulky, out of place accessory in a nursery, so we opted for the Nanit Plus Camera and Floor Stand that take up minimal space, offer a clean design, and provide a much better overhead view of baby while she sleeps,” said Kirby. Parents appreciate when baby sleeps well, so a blackout shade, in ivory linen, was the best choice for this woodland inspired nursery. Purveyors of custom window treatments, Everhem made it simple to choose the luxe fabric, the pleated style, and enter dimensions for the long outside mount Roman shade. THE FURNITURE

The tapered legs of the classic white crib and dresser provide consistency and elegance, while the gold swivel base of the glider makes a statement. Babyletto Sprout 4-in-1 Convertible Crib, $379; babyletto.com THE ACCENTS

“The sky blue shade of the woven herringbone rug could not have worked more perfectly with the wallpaper,” said Kirby. “The texture is great for playing with baby on the floor and that subtle pattern is just enough to provide interest.” Herringbone Sky Woven Cotton Rug, $482; annieselke.com Mini also complemented the design with a trio of friendly knit dolls from Cuddle + Kind, along with a soft ivory alpaca throw from Serena & Lily. THE BEFORE

“This space was missing that punch that you can only get from wallpaper,” said Mini’s Editor in Chief Kate Kirby. “We chose Serena & Lily’s Priano Wallpaper which has these beautiful, sweeping willow branches that really play on the acres of trees seen just outside the bedroom’s window.” Priano Wallpaper in Dusty Pink, $98; serenaandlily.com THE PL ACEMENT

Moving everything out of the space to reintroduce a dose of practicality and smooth navigation, the team brought back in a twin sized bed for the toddler, set against a natural seagrass headboard, two mid-century-esque nightstands, and the Lalo Play Table which acts as a sweet, little reading nook. THE ACCENTS

It’s important to know that not every kids’ space has to have a theme. “It’s like a wedding— everyone asks what the theme is or what your ‘colors’ are,” says Kirby. “We kind of let this space decide what the accents would be and ended up with these sweet bunnies. First, we chose the handmade knobs for the side tables, then found the bookends, and Hunt Slonem prints. It was one right after the other.” THE ART

We chose a trio of art prints in the same dusty pink shade, including a portrait of Frida Kahlo made from lush florals and foliage. The floral alphabet poster is also a nod to the natural elements found throughout. Alphabet Floral Poster, $22; mushie.com; Frida Kahlo Flower Print, From $35; sistergolden.com Mini also incorporated a bold, pink cloud print from photographer Kim Genevieve’s Sweet Dreams series. Framed Red Velvet Art Print, $275; kimgenevieve.com

THE NOOK

By placing a dresser inside of the room’s closet, we were able to carve out a reading nook, anchored by the book ledges and Play Table from Lalo. This is a great space for littles to browse pages and do (clean!) projects. The Play Kit, $250; meetlalo.com THE ORGANIZATION

“I love using baskets and bins for storage in kids’ rooms,” said Kirby. “It makes it so easy for them to put things away without much direction.” Pom Pom Hamper, $82; Pom Pom Pint, $30; Follow Me Giraffe Printed Pint, $28; shoppehr.com

SOFT SHADES

Since there are three separate windows in the space, we decided to go with three individual soft Roman shades from Wovn Home. “The way the ivory linen falls at the bottom of the shade is so romantic and really adds to the softness and serenity of the space,” says Kirby. “It can be so tricky to choose shades for kids’ spaces, and oftentimes custom feels out of reach, but I loved how easy this was to choose the fabric, input dimensions, and wait for the custom shades to arrive.” Custom Soft Roman Shades in Ivory Linen, Prices vary, wovnhome.com

THE BEDDING

After we chose the wallpaper, the dusty pink shade became a way to jazz up the otherwise plain, white bedding. A salmon-colored throw pillow sits ahead of two muted pink printed pillow shams from RH Baby & Child, while the linen tassel throw blanket provides an added textural layer. Washed Organic Linen Paisley Print Sham in Petal, $29; rhbabyandchild.com THE LIGHTING

“The warm light these bedside sconces put off at night is so magical,” says Kirby. “It’s the perfect amount for reading bedtime stories.” Lanett Swing Arm Plug-In Wall Lamp Set, $129; lampsplus.com

PERFECT PINKS

The striped Annie Selke rug in the same dusty pink hue offers more texture underfoot, while happy knit dolls from Cuddle + Kind perch on the bed and play table. Swedish Stripe Woven Cotton Rug, annieselke.com; Hannah the Bunny, Mia the Dog, and Lola the Llama, From $55; cuddleandkind.com

How has motherhood changed you?

MINI |

Motherhood has changed me into a much more patient version of myself. It has also made me feel so much more empathy and compassion for others.

JACEY DUPRIE |

What do you think is the greatest challenge of motherhood?

MINI |

The biggest challenge is the heartache. Being a mother is the greatest love I have ever felt in the world. At times it feels like my heart is going to explode with love. But the heart also aches when you sometimes have to let go as a mom, watch my baby be in pain and allow her space to struggle. I find it so hard at times to be strong for her during turbulent times.

JACEY DUPRIE |

How are you and your husband a great parenting team?

MINI |

We’re thrilled to have you on our cover! Let’s dive right into your life as a mom. What does your morning routine look like?

MINI |

I do my best to wake up an hour before June and when I’m able to pull it off, I practice morning meditation, enjoy my coffee and have a moment to connect with Grant before we start the day. June wakes up around 8 a.m. and we have breakfast together on most days and enjoy some morning snuggles before we start our day. I start my workday at 8:30 a.m.

JACEY DUPRIE |

Grant is incredibly patient and calm. Any time I start to feel like I might be spiraling he is perfect to take over. Grant is also very hands on. I am more into reading every book, researching, getting us on schedules and looking into schools, camps and keeping us all on track. Grant is great at making June dance, playing hide and seek and offering levity around the house.

JACEY DUPRIE |

You’ve opened up on your experience with PCOS and post-delivery complications. Can you share what led to your postpartum diagnosis?

MINI |

I struggled greatly during postpartum both emotionally and physically and I knew immediately after my birth that something was “off.” After a year passed, we decided to do IVF. It was through that experience that I finally did some further investigating and discovered in addition to PCOS, I have adenomyosis and my doctor advises against delivering another baby due to health risks.

JACEY DUPRIE |

months even, I had an extreme sense of dread that something awful was going to happen to June. I couldn’t eat or sleep with a sick feeling in my stomach constantly. Another one of my PPD symptoms was rage towards myself for not being able to “bounce back” and feel mentally strong. This was quite scary because I would feel such strong waves of rage and frustration that I sometimes envisioned throwing myself down the stairs. It’s hard to admit this now. I never felt like I wanted to hurt June but I did sometimes think about hurting myself during that time. You’ve also shared that you started the IVF process. What has that process/egg freezing journey been like for you?

MINI |

Getting back into my own mind and body after giving birth took time. For many days,

After my awful postpartum experience, luckily going through IVF felt easier for me. Unlike most women, my body responded really well to the medications. I actually felt better being on all of the hormone injections because of my extreme hormone imbalance at the time. It was the first time in years that I felt balanced and mentally strong. That was when we knew there was 100% a bigger issue going on that needed to be addressed. So, I saw hormone specialists and a new OBGYN who diagnosed me. It kind of all unfolded at once along with our IVF journey.

JACEY DUPRIE |

What do you want women to know who might be going through a similar experience?

MINI |

You are not crazy. Your feelings are 100% valid, but they are feelings, not reality. Also, trust your body. You know more than anyone when something feels off about the way you are feeling. Outside of the physical struggles of postpartum, the mental journey can be a tortuous one during what should be the happiest moments of your life. I would recommend pregnant women form a strong support system and make a plan with family, friends or their partner before they give birth. Tell them to look for warning signs and give them tips for ways they can help you. If you are “in it,” I would suggest taking walks by yourself to clear your mind. Do your best to make time for YOU again, above all else. The process took me a full year and I want others to know that it is okay to feel sad, confused and lonely after giving birth. You are not alone.

JACEY DUPRIE |

Tell us how you decided on your daughter’s name. Were there some names that you liked and your husband vetoed, and visa versa?

MINI |

We were so torn on the name because I wanted it to have meaning and a story. We had it narrowed down to three names and in the end, I was so tired of the name game that I let Grant pick. I kept trying to think of ways to make “June” have a meaning but couldn’t. We gave birth to June Marion Leavitt. Then, Grant’s parents came to the hospital to meet our little girl and we told them the name. Grant’s dad said “Huh, June, that was my great-greatgrandmother’s name.” I broke into tears not knowing this family history. June’s middle name, Marion, is my late grandmother’s name.

JACEY DUPRIE |

You really have a lot of irons in the fire! In addition to the Damsel blog, can you give us some insight on your other business ventures right now?

MINI |

In addition to Damsel, I am the Creative Director for a 100% organic cotton baby clothing brand called 1212. Grant and I are also working on a new house project in Lake Arrowhead which we will potentially rent out starting Summer 2021. Our goal is to work towards doing more projects in the home space that will allow us to expand into other rental properties. My newest project is a book that I’m writing that will publish in 2022.

JACEY DUPRIE |

Can you tell us about your position with 1212? How long you’ve been with the brand, why you started, what you do?

MINI |

for 1212 shortly after giving birth to June which is so sweet because I truly worried about my career falling to the wayside after becoming a mom. Little did I know an entirely new world of opportunity would open up thanks to June. I was first drawn to 1212 by its incredibly soft 100% organic cotton since I am, after all, a cotton farmer’s daughter. I absolutely love the charitable component in that every purchase gives back to Baby2Baby. In my role, I work towards harnessing the brand messaging across all social media and website channels. I also spearhead all design decisions and photoshoots. We have some really exciting things coming up for 2021, including the launch of Mommy & Me pajamas. Mommy & Me PJ’s were something I wanted to introduce to the brand when I started last year so it’s been so fun to finally have it come to fruition. What has been your proudest career moment to date?

MINI |

Securing my book deal with Park Row from HarperCollins. It was something that I have dreamed of since college and I still cannot believe that I am writing a book!

JACEY DUPRIE |

What helps you to juggle motherhood and career?

MINI |

To accept that at the end of the day, it isn’t all going to be perfect. I don’t believe in the idea of work/life balance. So long as I feel grounded and happy with myself then I am able to fully pour my heart into whatever task or activity is in front of me.

JACEY DUPRIE |

MINI |

We all experience mom guilt! When do you find you experience it most and how do you get past it?

your childhood or upbringing do you hope June shares or you hope to pass down to her?

I used to experience a lot of mom guilt when I would travel. I felt like people would judge my online life and that we spend nights away from June. It made me feel like a bad mom. But at the end of the day, my relationship to Grant and my relationship to myself make me a better mom for June. I have to do what is best for my family. I just keep repeating myself that whenever mom guilt arises about anything. Do what is best for your family.

JACEY DUPRIE |

JACEY DUPRIE |

I definitely try to get June outside playing in the dirt as much as possible. I ran around barefoot growing up on the fields of South Texas. My dad is a cotton farmer and we grew up growing our own food and learning what it meant to survive off the land. I hope to instill these aspects in June’s upbringing.

MINI |

Your best advice for June, GO!

This life is yours and yours alone. Don’t ever worry about what other people want you to be. Just be you.

BRAND GROWS IN

B R O O K LY N Having spent years in fashion at publications like ELLE, TeenVOGUE, and Glamour, native New Yorker JANE KELTNER DE VALLE lives, breathes, and radiates style. The Architectural Digest Style Director now branches out with the launch of her children’s skincare line, Paloroma, a brand she co-founded with her award-winning architect husband Giancarlo Valle and named after her own children, Roman, age 7, and Paloma, age 2.5.

photography by CHARLIE JULIET PHOTOGRAPHY

Since we returned to New York in September for school, my bedroom has become my home office. The desk is tucked into a window nook overlooking the Brooklyn Bridge. It’s such a New York view and makes me feel connected to the city even when I’m plugging away alone all day. JANE KELTNER DE VALLE |

Now let’s talk about the amazing kids’ room! What was your inspiration when creating a space for your Minis?

MINI |

Our children’s bedroom is my favorite room in the house. I’ve always loved powder blue and red together. It feels old world but playful, it’s gender neutral, and it is sophisticated enough that you can grow with it. The palette of the bedroom actually inspired the colorway for Paloroma! The canopy strangely came to be after we had a feng shui master visit, who told us that sleeping under beams can block energy. He advised us to do drop ceilings, but we didn’t want to lose three feet of height. The canopy was a creative design solution that has become the most magical part of the room. and drawers, as well as the blue and salmon colorway.

MINI |

Your children (Roman, 7, and Paloma, 2.5) have beautiful names! Can you tell us more about how you chose those names?

Roman had eczema as a baby, and we couldn’t find anything to treat it that met our standards of clean beauty and felt beautiful and personal— something we could connect with. So many products are loaded up with fragrances or dumbed down in design. We wanted to create something that modern, discerning parents could trust in, connect with, and relate to, and that children could grow with.

MINI |

My husband’s family is Italian Peruvian, and he and his brother both have very Italian names. We wanted to continue that tradition with Latin names of Italian or Spanish origin. I think both of our children’s names have a certain strength to them, but of course Paloma means dove and also signifies peace. It’s funny, because our Paloma very much lives up to both sides of her name— she is steadfastly strong-willed, but also such a caring and loving soul. JANE KELTNER DE VALLE |

We are so inspired by Paloroma! Can you tell us how the brand came to be?

JANE KELTNER DE VALLE |

What makes Paloroma stand out from other children’s skincare products?

MINI |

JANE KELTNER DE VALLE |

For us, Paloroma is

a lifestyle. It has heart and soul. Aside from being clean, gentle, and fragrance free, I hope that there’s a certain pleasure derived from the way we present ourselves, whether it’s the playful product names or the pretty packaging. Our motto is beautiful on the inside and out. We want to create a holistic experience. How has it been working with your husband on this project? How do you two work together?

MINI |

It’s the best feeling in the world to create and bring something into this world with the person you love the most. We speak the same language, have each other’s backs, and each bring different strengths to the table. JANE KELTNER DE VALLE |

What do you think about the idea of “having it all?”

MINI |

Aerin Lauder once told me that her grandmother Estee used to say about balancing family, style, and business, “You can’t have it all at the same time— but you can have it all.” I love that sentiment. As women and mothers, I think we are often made to feel guilty for trying to be more than one thing. Beyond that, it’s just good advice to carve out time for each of the things that are important to you. When I’m working, I am immersed in that, and likewise when I’m with my children I try to be fully present with them. JANE KELTNER DE VALLE |

kids or one to two? Different! I will say that the transition from one to two is a lot. I found it really hard to physically be there for both of my children in the way that they needed me in those early weeks. When you’re nursing, it becomes all-consuming, and I remember that being really hard on my son. JANE KELTNER DE VALLE |

What has surprised you most about motherhood?

MINI |

How madly in love and obsessed with my children I would be. And also how much our community would grow as a result of having children. I feel really lucky to have an amazing core group of friends who are all raising our children together and who can relate to each other as we go through different phases of our children’s lives. It’s a deeper, different level of friendship than anything I had experienced before. That community of mom and dad friends has inspired us as we grow Paloroma, too. We want to build a community that people feel they can trust, be a part of, connect with, grow with. JANE KELTNER DE VALLE |

ence this and how do you get past it? I hate the phrase mom guilt— dads never get asked about dad guilt. That said, we all feel guilty sometimes. Working from home has actually been hardest for me in the sense that the boundaries between office and family life are blurred from a physical standpoint. My twoand-a-half year old is always wanting to come into my room, and it’s really hard to say no. JANE KELTNER DE VALLE |

Sparkle No matter how many beads, bracelets, or sparkly kids baubles she gave her three girls, former ELLE Accessories Director MARIA DUENAS JACOBS found her daughters were always stealing her own. So inspired by glitzy, grown-up things and decadent fine jewelry, the NYC-based entrepreneur turned their fanciful fascination into a fullblown brand, with the launch of Super Smalls, an extravagant yet whimsical accessories line translated for the Mini crowd.

Thank you for inviting us into your home! Tell us about the place. Where do you spend the most time in your home?

MINI |

How was your transition from a mom of one to three kids?

MINI |

My eldest daughter, Luna, was only two when the twins were born and she took a little time to process the “invasion.” There was definitely a physical challenge, but I think the emotional piece was the most trying for me. As a mom, I wanted to give my all to each child, and that’s really hard to do with three little ones. I felt guilt and exhaustion often but I learned to manage my own expectations. They taught me to be more patient with myself. I think that’s the challenge for any mom— how to manage what’s needed for the kids and also look after yourself!

MARIA DUENAS JACOBS |

This is the first home that we had a real hand in designing. It’s a true family home that takes into account the sometimes-raucous nature of our three young kids. We spend the most time in the dining nook with wraparound seating. The table is hardy and spacious. Oftentimes, the kids are crafting while I am working, and it’s a great place for the whole family to eat.

MARIA DUENAS JACOBS |

How about your kids’ spaces? What are some of your favorite elements there?

MINI |

In true Super Smalls form, I always ask my kids to chime in on styling their world. I like their feedback and I enjoy the challenge of executing on their dream ideas. That’s how Super Smalls was born and that’s how their playroom was designed! They asked for rainbows and horses (go figure). I chose a vintage Morroccan rug that was tie-dyed in sunwashed colors which gives a very chic rainbow effect. It also has so much texture and so many colors that it’s stain friendly (that’s an old trick— pattern hides imperfection!) We bought adjustable bookshelves for the back wall where we put ALL of their toys in canvas totes, neat stacks, or Super Smalls boxes; we use these as storage for everything small. Their bedroom was all about making it their “dream room” and that was easily accomplished with our amazing cloud wallpaper!

MARIA DUENAS JACOBS |

What is most important to you in raising your girls?

MINI |

I put a lot of emphasis on self-esteem. I want them to be free to make mistakes, be imperfect, and learn without compromising their self-worth. I also want their childhood to be light-hearted and full of wonder. There is so much pressure out there to collect accomplishments and accolades— instruments, ballet, languages, grades, etc. I wasn’t raised with that rigor. I was raised with emphasis on emotional responsibility and support and I like that for my kids. Kindness, humor, awareness.

MARIA DUENAS JACOBS |

What advice would you give to moms about to have their second or even third baby?

MINI |

So many worries. That’s the thing about parenting, right? You’re always worried about something. I think my biggest worry is building my girls’ self-esteem so they know their worth and can be their own protectors and advocates.

MARIA DUENAS JACOBS |

We are so inspired by Super Smalls! Can you tell us how it all came to be?

MINI |

It all came to be very organically. My girls were drawn to my collection of jewelry and sparkly objects. I would ask them time and again to keep their hands off of my jewelry! These pieces aren’t made for play! And that gave me an idea— What if they were? I set out to find products that would satisfy their curiosity and couldn’t find anything great in the market. With Luna’s help, we began the journey of trying to make something great ourselves. The jewelry and the box, the whole experience, was important and deliberate. It had to be WOW all the way through.

MARIA DUENAS JACOBS |

Be patient with yourself. You don’t have to do everything right all of the time.

MARIA DUENAS JACOBS |

Can you tell us how you decided on your daughters’ names?

MINI |

We deliberately chose names that were easy to pronounce in both English and Spanish. It was important to us that their names not change when they are said by our families. Luna, Isa, Silvi— they all work!

MARIA DUENAS JACOBS |

MINI |

What is your greatest parenting worry?

What are you most excited about for the future of Super Smalls?

MARIA DUENAS JACOBS |

even higher. Crafts and toys are in our immediate future and we can’t wait to add a little sparkle to the toy world. What has been the greatest lesson you’ve learned in business thus far?

MINI |

Putting something off doesn’t mean scrapping it. I am a “do-er” by nature and it was hard for me to be patient on some of my ideas. The pandemic really taught me to wait and to reorganize priorities. We had to change around our timelines a lot and it actually meant we were able to do fewer things, but better.

MARIA DUENAS JACOBS |

What do you think about the idea of “having it all?

MINI |

I don’t give it much importance. I think “all” is a relative thing. What I know for sure is that you can’t have it all or do it all, at the same time. I’ve learned there is such a thing as too much multitasking. Sometimes slowing down to do just the ONE thing is the right thing too.

MARIA DUENAS JACOBS |

What do you love about raising your kids in NYC?

MINI |

New York is full of diversity. Exposure to different cultures and different interests is so important because it broadens the mind and helps us grow. I love that about New York.

If you’ve spotted a bedazzled headband clad in pearls and jewels, or most recently, embellished face masks and beanies (as seen on celebrities like former Mini cover mom Busy Philipps), it was all thanks to the Queen of Bling herself, LISA “LELE” SADOUGHI. This NYC-based mom of two is no stranger to the fashion world, having learned the ropes by working for brands like Rebecca Taylor, J.Crew, and Tory Burch, and now she’s sharing a slice of her fantasically frosted life with Mini.

We are so inspired by your brand! Can you tell us how it all came to be?

MINI |

I always knew I would create, but didn’t know what would mean. Growing up, I was interested in painting, photography, and collage. I started my career in apparel and moved into trims and jewelry later in my life. Working in the big, corporate companies Rebecca Taylor, J.Crew, and Tory Burch, gave me the opportunities to learn about all aspects of the business. When I ventured on my own, I had gained valuable experience in production, marketing, and operations that balanced my focus on design.

LISA SADOUGHI |

Brands have all had to pivot somewhat recently— selling face masks, ramping up online sales. What changes have you seen your brand undergo over the last year?

MINI |

I rarely use the word pivot to describe our business this year, as we did not change direction, just added to our category assortment. We are actually well suited to make face masks as our company focuses on accessories. We provide you with the whole look, and the new reality face masks are now part of your accessory wardrobe. The new category has not only increased our sales dramatically, but it has provided us with a whole new customer base that have come back to try all out other categories like headbands and jewelry.

LISA SADOUGHI |

Where do you see the brand going in the future or where do you want it to go?

MINI |

What do you think is the greatest challenge of being a working mom?

MINI |

Accepting that you cannot do it all is the key to being a mom and business owner. I choose to take my kids to school and pick them up every day, and this means I do not take meetings during these times. It’s all about a balance.

LISA SADOUGHI |

What has been the greatest lesson you’ve learned in business thus far?

MINI |

What do you think about the idea of “having it all?” I feel fortunate I have been able to build my life around what I want to do. My office, the kids’ school, and my townhouse are all in two blocks from each other. I try to be at home and the office without missing out, but the reality is there are many sacrifices you take to balance it out.

FRENCH TWIST Artist JAMIE BECK always dreamed of living in France and set out from her busy, familiar routine in Manhattan to spend a year in Provence. Finding herself completely captivated by all things French, Beck twisted the plot and decided to turn her temporary plans into a forever home with her husband, Kevin, and daughter, Eloise.

photography by JAMIE BECK

We are so inspired by your journey! Can you tell us about your decision to spend a year in Provence, and then (Gasp! Jealous!) stay put?

MINI |

I had always dreamed to live in France! I had one of those, live or die moments and the thought that popped into my head was, “Great. Now I’ll never know what it was like to live in France.” I realized, if I thought that I should probably go and do it! After I arrived, I not only fell in love with the experience, the light, the French way of life, but with who I was able to be here. After the year was over, I kept saying, “Oh let’s just stay one more month, one more month, on more month,” until eventually I realized we need to figure out how to just live here forever! JAMIE BECK |

Can you give us an idea of how different your life is in Provence vs. Manhattan?

MINI |

I have much more of a balance here. There is a quietness at the end of the day and on the weekends where you really can take pause. In New York, it was always 24/7; I mean, that’s one of the reasons you live there! But I didn’t realize how important balance was in your life. It’s also a relief to be so embedded in nature, to walk out my door and think more about the seasonal fruits and flowers around me than what other people are doing, or what they have. Of course, the ingredients here are not only the best in the world, but also affordable! JAMIE BECK |

MINI |

What is it about the French way of life

that intrigued you most? The appreciation for art, thought, and the layers of time. I find such a strong confidence yet tenderness in the French because they are created from thousands and thousands of years of history which you walk through every day from the Roman bridges to the medieval towers that make up my village. JAMIE BECK |

You’re also a mother to darling Eloise! How do you think French parenting differs from other styles of parenting?

MINI |

First, I have to say, the French childcare system, créche, is absolutely incredible! We take Eloise five days a week and she loves it and it’s affordable! We are completely blown away at the French love of children and their ability to teach them patience, manners, and etiquette. JAMIE BECK |

Can you share with us how you chose your daughter’s name?

MINI |

We had a list of names we liked but we waited until she was born to meet and name her. Eloise was actually not on our initial list! My husband and I left three day old Eloise with her grandmother who flew over from the United States and took a walk in the maternity. We went through the list and when we got to Elodie, we said, “Oh, what about Eloise?” She looks like an Eloise and we can call her ‘Ellie’ or ‘Elle’. We both knew it was the one right away. Her middle name is Starling after the birds that JAMIE BECK |

dance like schools of fish in the sky at dusk, which is, my favorite time of day to make my photographs. What aspects of French life do you hope your daughter continues to follow or maintain as she grows up?

MINI |

The language would be key! I would love for her to be fluent in French. Even at two, she is already more fluent than I am after living here for four years. It’s just amazing. I would also like for her to adopt the French formalities, the etiquette they teach her at créche. JAMIE BECK |

Can you give us a glimpse into a typical day with Eloise?

MINI |

During the global pandemic nothing is typical anymore. Eloise wakes up around 8 a.m. and we have breakfast, play for a bit, and get dressed for créche. I let her run around the village and say hi to the cats she’s obsessed with before heading over. While she is at créche, my husband and I work. We live in an 18th century hôtel particulier; his office is on the ground floor and just above is my studio. We live in the apartment above that. In the afternoon, [my husband] Kevin picks Elosie up while I finish my daily photograph, clean up, and make dinner. Right now, we are enjoying building a fire with her in the evening and playing after dinner all together before she takes her bath and we do bedtime. In the warmer months, when the light lasts longer, JAMIE BECK |

we will walk over to the public jardin, or garden, and play at the duck pond or on the playground with her before dinner. Let’s talk French style! What is your idea of the perfect French ensemble or what are you wearing most these days?

MINI |

I live in the south of France so my wardrobe is very natural. I love wearing linens, which are so incredible in France. They are cool in the summer and warm in the winter. I have also adopted the large ruffled French sleeves as my go-to style! My favorite French designer is Thierry Colson. He does the best French ruffles! JAMIE BECK |

Your work is stunning! Can you tell us about what inspires you to create and what your process is like?

MINI |

The French countryside is my muse. Everything I create here is inspired by the everyday life we all have access to. The weather that day, the light, the seasonal fruits and vegetables at the market, the flowers blooming across the landscape, the butterflies and bugs that make their way into my studio. It is constantly in motion, constantly changing, and I have found it endlessly inspiring. JAMIE BECK |

We love your #IsolationCreation series. How have you been spending this time in quarantine? What will you remember most about this time?

MINI |

#IsolationCreation which originally began with the first government mandated lockdown last March and lasted for 60 days, is now in its second part with our second lockdown JAMIE BECK |

ending December 15. While we are confined to our homes, I decided to create one piece of art a day as a way to do something positive and productive with the time. We are now on day 92! For the most of 2020, after taking care of Eloise in the morning, I go to my studio and I begin to work on the daily art, sharing the process in Instagram stories (@jamiebeck.co) as I work. I think what I will remember most during this time is just being in the studio and starting each day with nothing and by the end, turning it into something.
