our one year anniversary since we launched Babystyle Magazine last December. We’ve grown alot over the past year— we have a new name, a new look, and our readership is larger than we’d ever imagined. Last December, I took the plunge to bring you the magazine that I felt the market was lacking. Our team boarded a plane at 6 A.M. and headed to Los Angeles. With the help of our friend and photographer Gretchen Easton, we shot a fabulous cover and inside feature by noon and were safely back home by 9 P.M. It was a long trip, but so incredibly worth it. Our first issue launched to 10,000 readers in the first week— beyond what we expected. Today, our readership has increased to over 50,000 readers in the opening week. We want to thank each and every one of you who have helped make Mini Magazine a success and we look forward to many more issues to come. This issue features a glowing cover by actress and new FabKids creative mama Christina-

On November 9, whimsical children’s favorite The Land of Nod opened its first store in New York City’s SoHo. But this store, unlike the compay’s other three locations, is only open through the holidays. So what kind of store makes a smash debut in such a short time? A pop up toy shop, of course! The Land of Nod— multi-channel retailer for baby and kids furniture, bedding, accessories, and toys— invited guests to visit their enchanted forest themed shop on 136 Prince Street in the hopes of making it the ultimate destination for holiday shopping. “I’m so excited to bring the Holiday Toy Shop to life,” said The Land of Nod’s Managing Director, Michelle Kohanzo. “We hope shoppers will bring their children and visit the Land of Nod in person.” POP UP FUN

Its hollow inner offers the key benefit of ‘air’ throughout the inner tire delivering in a smoother ride, something that is missing from the standard EVA tire. It’s easy single hand fast fold and ultra lightweight frame, means travelling with MB mini is such a dream! So effortless and intuitive, getting this stroller in and out of the car or public transport will be such a breeze, and its adaptability means that it can grow with your child, taking a car seat, carrycot or simply lie flat the seat ham-

NO MORE LINES

THE IT LIST

FENG BAR SHUI

Who likes lines? The first experience your guests will have is checking their coat. Prepare for it. Have an attendant or two with coat racks so people can check coats quickly and start enjoying the party. If the line backs up, pull someone to grab the guests’ coats and give them a number.

After you’ve confirmed all of your vendors, make a cheat sheet of the cell phone numbers of all companies and staff you’re using. That way, if there’s an issue or someone is running late, you have the right contact info in front of you. It beats looking through a contract for a cell-phone number that probably isn’t on there anyway.

Station the bar as far back into the space as possible to draw the crowd away from the front door and avoid a bottleneck getting in or out. I like to put the bar near a dance floor, that way the toetappers will be more likely to start dancing after a drink or two.

BITE SIZED BITS

TRUST YOURSELF

THE FUN FACTOR

Hors d’ oeuvres should be cute, perfectly mouth-sized portions of food and not so big that after you take one bite the other half lands on your dress— this is my pet peeve. Passing is also a great way to serve dessert. P.S. If you’re serving food on skewers, have half a lemon on the tray so guests can stick their used skewers in it.

As the host or hostess, you have to listen to your senses. If the music sounds too loud, it probably is. If you’re screaming, everyone else is probably screaming too. If you’re hot, chances are everyone else is too.

The most important piece of advice— breathe, relax, and have fun. Events take on a life of their own and they have their own energy. Sometimes they don’t go according to plan and all you can do is roll with it. If you raise your glass and laugh it off, your guests will too. M I N I - M A G A Z I N E . C O M

THE SWEET SPOT What happens when two sisters quit their corporate jobs to follow their dreams? A signature-swirled, successful cupcake shop, of course! INTERVIEW BY KAITLYN KIRBY

PHOTOGRAPHY BY GEORGETOWN CUPCAKE

When sisters Katherine Kallinis Berman and

0 4

Sophie Kallinis LaMontagne quit their corporate jobs—Katherine at Gucci and Sophie at a venture capital firm— the two never dreamed of the sugar-coated success that would follow.

M I N I | holiday 12

Now with four Georgetown Cupcake locations, two more in the works, two books, a hit reality TV show, and a mini cupcake in the oven (Congratulations, Katherine!), it’s safe to say the sisterly duo has officially reached the sweet life.

The newest addition to the Georgetown Cupcake book family is Sweet Celebrations— a collection of Berman and LaMontagne’s favorite cupcake recipes, memories, and decorating secrets for every occasion. MINI: Congratulations on your new book, Sweet

Celebrations! We’re in love with the recipes! Talk to us about the inspiration for this book. What was the best part of working on this one?

BERMAN AND LAMONTAGNE: We are

so excited about our new book Sweet Celebrations. The inspiration for our new book was our personal celebrations in life. In the book, we share some of the biggest celebrations in our lives as well as cupcake and dessert recipes, cupcake decorating guides, and entertaining ideas for every type of party and celebration in life. The best part of working on this book was the design aspect. We wanted the book to have a celebratory and special feel to it. It was a lot of fun to design together.

MOVING ON UP

COAST-TO-COAST CUPCAKES

Georgetown Cupcake has recently expanded into NYC’s SoHo and Boston’s Newbury Street— and soon Atlanta and Los Angeles too!

MINI: You talk about learning to bake

from your grandmother. What was it like baking with her when you were younger? What tips of hers have stuck with you?

BERMAN AND LAMONTAGNE: Our

grandmother was a huge influence on us growing up. We spent much of our childhood baking alongside her in the kitchen, and we loved it. We developed our passion for baking from the time we spent with her. Many of her baking tips have stuck with us – and we try to share them in our book. She was always very patient in baking, and that’s one thing we always try to remember. In baking, it’s always important to go very slowly and take your time.

TAKE TWO

A VERY SWEET CELEBRATION

Katherine and Sophie won us over with The Cupcake Diaries and now they’re back with their second book— Sweet Celebrations.

MINI: We love that the book has a holiday

section! What is your favorite recipe or treat from the book to make for the holidays?

day recipe in the book is our White Chocolate Peppermint cupcakes. They smell absolutely delicious when baking in the oven and we love doing the candy cane swirl frosting!

MINI: How do you celebrate the holidays in

your families? What kinds of treats are made?

BERMAN AND LAMONTAGNE: We spend the

majority of the holidays with our families baking. We bake all kinds of cupcakes, cakes, and cookies! Some of our best family memories are baking together during the holidays. There is just something about the smell of gingerbread cupcakes in the oven and Christmas music playing that is so magical.

locations: Georgetown, Bethesda, NYC/ Soho, and Boston. We’re opening in Los Angeles in November! Next on the list is Atlanta opening next Spring! We are very excited!

MINI: Congratulations to Katherine on her

mini cupcake in the oven! Tell us about how you planned to tell Mommy the news.

BERMAN: Thank you! I am very excited! I

wanted to surprise my mom with the news because, as anyone who watches DC Cupcakes knows, she is obsessed with wanting to be a grandmother. So, in the latest episode of DC Cupcakes, Sophie and I created a cupcake puzzle for her to put together and

ers and have them in every single color— it’s become an obsession of ours! We’re always looking for the latest color.

Aside from her standup credentials, Thomas is the founder of Mama Glow, a holistic lifestyle hub for women that provides support to pre and postnatal women. It guides women on their journey to motherhood, offering culinary and nutritional services, yoga, and birth coaching services. It goes without saying that Mama Glow would be on our It List. “The Mama Glow movement is about women taking charge of their health, reclaiming their bodies as sacred, styling their fabulous life, and celebrating pregnancy and birth because it’s YOUR party,” Thomas told Mini. “We founded the Mama Glow Film Festival first and launched it with Christy Turlington and Selita Ebanks to support maternal advocacy.” Next came the Mama Glow Salon Series which Thomas launched with Ricki

Lake and Abby Epstein. “We premiered their film More Business of Being Born. The Salon Series platform is all about cocktails, panel discussion and raising awareness about birth topics.” Thomas said she felt compelled to write Mama Glow as she didn’t have a guide to work with when she was pregnant and she wanted to make the book workable. “I think women will find the way I organize the book very easy to navigate,” said Thomas. “There are also videos for the yoga sections in the book which I think moms will enjoy watching and practicing.” Thomas believes women should not only feel supported and empowered, but mobilized to take healthy action in their lives and make choices in the name of positivity. “I wanted to promote green living,” the glow maven M I N I - M A G A Z I N E . In the kitchen, on the mat, and in their lives.” With Thomas’ captivating vision on maternity lifestyle, she had no problem mapping out her four essential building blocks to being one chic mama. There’s “glow foods” for optimal wellness, “yoga or another dynamic movement supporting your joints, muscles, and needs of your changing body, mindful practice including journaling and meditation, and finally, “glow time.” Glow time means taking time to focus on you— getting your hair blown out, doing a facial at home, relaxing and decompressing. “Putting yourself first is one of the most important things you can learn while pregnant,” Thomas advised. “Learn to mother yourself first.” And no glowing pregnancy would be complete without birth bag essentials. With her whole life’s work has revolved around childbirth and care, Pope has become a go-to resource for mothers, which allows her to continue doing the work that she has always loved. “I love helping people be better prepared for their babies so they can enjoy parenting more and be better parents,” she said of her work. “At the end of the day, I am child advocate, and care that they are coming into good, prepared homes. I don’t think I knew I wanted to do this, but I did know I wanted to be a

mom and have a career about helping parents.” Mommy IQ answers tough questions that new parents may overlook when they’re adjusting to parenthood. The book offers insights on infant behavior and also stresses the importance of a baby’s safety. “I always like to check that they have taken baby CPR and safety, and [parents] almost always say no,” said Pope. “I am particularly passionate about them getting these questions right because, simply put, it saves lives.” The book also hits on topics like infant sleeping patterns and how often a newborn should be fed. “First-time parents are usually surprised by the number of times they need to feed their baby in a 24-hour period—8 to 12 times!—and the actual number of hours their newborn will sleep for in a 24-hour period—18 hours!” Pope noted. Besides the basic facts, Pope is full of advice that she has learned just through her own personal experiences as a mommy. M I N I - M A G A Z I N E . C O M

FRESH FABRIC

MYSTICAL MENAGERIE The Dylan Collection from Serena and Lily boasts a caravan of desert animals and an adventurous spirit.

According to design duo

Serena and Lily, home is where your heart is. It’s that feeling you get when you walk through the front door and everything just clicks. It’s where the best moments happen. It’s about family— the one you come from and the one you create. It’s your inner circle, your urban tribe. It’s friends stopping by for cocktails and kids staying up too late. It’s about personal style— knowing what you love, following your gut, and owning your look. It’s about finding inspiration everywhere and living well. And with just one look at their namesake collection of furniture, bedding, and more, you’ll be inspired to do the same.

MINI: Have you always been interested

in design? When did you two know you wanted to be designers?

SERENA: My taking a creative path in

life actually came as a surprise to me. It actually didn’t start forming until I was into my ‘20s. I was on my way to becoming a Clinical Psychologist, then switched course to study Fine Art. MINI: Tell us how Serena & Lily came to

be.

LILY: One day in 2003, Serena, who was

a textile designer and artist at the time, stopped by my Mill Valley baby boutique. We had a meeting a few days later and realized that we shared a strikingly similar point of view on the nursery.

We both saw a distinct void in the market for the kind of fresh, styledriven crib bedding we craved. Within an hour of that first meeting, we decided to form a company together. MINI: What was the first piece you

designed for Serena & Lily?

LILY: The first designs from Serena

MINKOFF: I made a pact with myself to dress like I did

before Luca during the week. I still wear the same type of clothing, I just have to take off a spiky bracelet or two when he’s around. Motherhood has made me more focused. I’m always on task at the office because I have to leave by 6:30 to get home to put Luca to sleep. But once I do, I get back on email and finish up all my work for the day.

The Two Penny Blue line is proudly crafted in the United States with extraordinary quality and care and as the line is produced in small quantities, every jacket is released as a one-ofa-kind, limited edition piece. After traveling with her husband to schools and orphanages in South Africa in 2007, Whitney quickly noticed the large need for schooling in the communities. It was long after her son came along later that year that the designer began brainstorming ways to combine her love of fashion and design with her passion for educating girls in need. Just three years later, Whitney was approached by friend Erin Gates of the Elements of Style design blog and the two began work on the collection. “We scoured the globe for the finest fabrics we could find— from hand-dyed silks in India to pima sateen from Italy,” remembered Whitney. “We spent two years perfecting the fit with a development team in New York’s Garment District that has worked with incredible brands like Theory and Alice and Olivia.” Paying close attention to detail and maintaining an emphasis on a ‘Made in the USA’ quality, Two Penny Blue was born. “I really believe that no other item in our closet has the power to tranform and elevate an outfit quite like a great jacket or blazer,” Whitney said of the Two Penny Blue line. “They are timeless, sophisticated, and work on women of all ages and body types. Most importantly, I love that we are helping to make a difference in the lives of young girls through our school uniform donation program.”

Mother of her namesake collection, Milly by Michelle Smith, this New York City designer shares how the best of both worlds means more than an uptown meets downtown collection.

STORY BY JADE LIKLEY

MINI EXCLUSIVE

THE REAL MINI MILLY

Designer Michelle Smith, founder and creative force

behind the Milly by Michelle Smith and Milly Minis collections, has a knack for creating timeless silhouettes with a smart, sexy, feminine flair. From the time she was four years old, drawing ball gowns on ballerinas and princesses in her kitchen to her time spent interning for Christian Dior Haute Couture in Paris, she knew that fashion was her calling. Now, the successful founder of Milly by Michelle Smith and the Milly Minis collections, the Manhattan mama is keeping herself busy with a booming business and a growing family. With so much going on, it might be easy to feel swamped with work, but Smith knows that a mocha latte, an early week blowout, and a bold statement piece can help you go above and beyond. Milly by Michelle Smith has been a chic, feminine force in the fashion world since 2001, when trained fashionista Smith made the decision to start her own business. The line took off and in 2011, the brand rang in their 10th anniversary with the grand opening of their first storefront, a flagship boutique on New York’s

prestigious Madison Avenue. “Milly is an extension of my personal style, and each collection is like stepping into my dream wardrobe for the season,” said Smith. “My aesthetic combines my experiences living in Paris and New York— uptown chic meets downtown cool. I design for women who want to dress in a way that is smart, sexy and glamorous.” Smith’s seasonal line reflects some of her favorites for the upcoming colder weather. Milly’s new collection showcases leathers, cashmeres and wools— cozy fabrics that create elegant looks for any occasion. “Leather is a huge trend this season. I love my Milly black cashmere sweater with a white leather collar and cuffs which goes with anything, even jeans,” Smith told Mini. “Another great piece is my leather stretch wool dress in black, which is so versatile— it takes one from day to night effortlessly.” To be a fashion icon, it’s imperative to always look chic. pieces to give an outfit the boost from fashionable to fabulous. “I’m always wearing a statement piece, whether it’s a metallic tweed jacket or a leather swirl skirt,” said the designer. “It’s essential for pulling together a look.” Now that the temperatures are dropping, a jacket is also a necessity for any on-the-go parents. “Your coat is your first impression style statement, whether you are on the street, entering an appointment, or arriving for a cocktail party,” said Smith. And according to the designer, a carry-all bag is a staple that every mother should have in her closet. Indeed, versatility and practicality seem to be two major players in Smith’s own wardrobe. Smith loves representing her own women’s brand, but the successful designer also has an extension of Milly for the younger crowd—Milly Minis. The children’s line stays true to the same fashion-forward styles that the adult collection showcases so that both mommy and daughter can look equally as chic. “I love that the Milly aesthetic remains consistent between collections— bold, vibrant, smart, and modern,” she said of the Minis line. “I learned firsthand from my daughter, Sophia, that little girls love to dress just like Mommy.” While running her own business keeps Smith undeniably busy, Sophia and son, William,

are always a priority. Though the days may consist of hours at the office or in meetings, Smith always makes it home before bedtime. “I am always home by 7:00-7:30 to put the kids to bed. I love my career, but my family comes first,” said the busy mom. Owning a thriving business takes time and consistent energy, but Smith enjoys how it gives her the ability to multitask and give her family the attention that it deserves. “Owning my own business allows flexibility on how I schedule my day. I can always pop out of the office for one of my children’s classes, a birthday party, and always for their doctor appointments,” Smith said. With a designer mom, it’s no surprise that Smith’s two children have impeccable taste in fashion. “Sophia knows what she likes, what she doesn’t like— a fashionista in training!” said Smith. And even William has a sharp fashion sense. “I love to dress him in classic looks with a European twist. He loves traditional button-down shirts in bold checks and colors.” At the end of it all, motherhood has truly changed the way Smith approaches her life. “I’m fortunate that I am able to balance my career with motherhood and enjoy the best of both worlds.” M I N I - M A G A Z I N E . SPELLING STYLE Teamed up with JCPenney, new mom of four Tori Spelling is ready to bring your Little Maven the perfect mix of Hollywood chic and modern

INTERVIEW BY KAITLYN KIRBY STORY BY JADE LIKELY PHOTOGRAPHY BY LITTLE MAVEN

Tori Spelling, in partnership with

JCPenney, has created a new colorful line of children’s clothing inspired by her own. The line features pieces for newborns all the way through the childhood years and offers some bright and exciting colors and patterns. “My kids inspired me 100%!” said the happy new mommy of four turned fashion designer. “I wanted fun, bold, pop colors in chic, comfortable and affordable baby and

toddler clothes and I couldn’t find [them]. So, I decided to create it myself!” Little Maven focuses on three main things: style, comfort and ease for both child and parent. “Style is obviously very important to me, but most of all I want the baby and child to be comfortable and I want it to be easy for the mother to put on!” Spelling said. Little Maven reflects Spelling’s personal style, harnessing fun prints, bold colors and eclectic design all into one clothing collection. “My style is eclectic and boho chic. I love colors and bold prints!” she said. “I think that’s totally reflected in my design choices for Little Maven. Chevron is timeless yet totally current, and one of my favorite prints which is why I wanted

to use it for Little Maven. Also, the Greek Key and houndstooth in layette are also two of my favorite patterns.” However, Spelling’s children played a role in some of the fashions too, offering some insights from the target audience themselves. “Liam is partial to picking fabrics because he loves things to be comfortable and cozy, while Stella is a total slave to fashion yet marches to her own tune,” Spelling said of her two eldest children’s fashion sense. “The faux fur leggings were her idea—I had faux fur fingerless gloves and she took them one day and put them on as leg warmers. I thought it was genius!” Even youngest daughter Hattie and new baby Finn get in on the Little Maven fun. “Hattie and Finn are my two L.M. models. They actually get to wear the whole line,” she noted. “Finn looks great in turquoise while Hattie loves herself some chevron—a girl after my own heart.” Spelling’s fourth child Finn was born just this past August, making him the newest edition to the Spelling-McDermott household. Spelling-McDermott family. During the holidays, the family gets crafty and creates their own ornaments for the tree so that they can continually add special touches throughout the years, and Spelling’s husband Dean, who recently founded his own recipe and cooking website Gourmet Dad, has an array of holiday dishes that he whips up for the family. “We love to prepare stews and soups for the holidays. Even though it’s L.A., it’s always nice to snuggle as a family in front of our fireplace and have a wintery stew,” said Spelling. We also love baking, so there are a lot of pies! He makes fruit and I make pecan.” While having a house full of children, pies, and crafts is always wondrous during the holiday season, health and happiness are the two things atop Spelling’s wish list this year. And it doesn’t seem like either of those things are too unattainable in her growing family. “We love, laugh, listen, learn and live,” she beamed. “I teach my kids to love and live to the fullest everyday. We also believe in a lot of laughter!”

the pop culture media, but the entire family welcomed the baby with open arms. “Life has definitely become a lot more hectic and louder,” said Spelling. ”Having two a year and under is a challenge, but a blessing.” Thankfully, Spelling and husband Dean McDermott’s three other children were more than happy to welcome Finn to the family. “All three love the new baby! Liam kisses Finn constantly all over his face and Stella is a helpful mommy with his feedings,” she said. “Hattie is so funny! She calls Finn ‘Dada’ and is fascinated by his eyes. With one finger, she always tries to touch his eyes. We are trying to teach her to play with his toes instead!” Getting to spend time together is key for the

It’s in the right size, seasonably appropriate, and something that your daughter will love. Before you know it, there’s a pink box waiting at your door!” To help celebrate our one-year anniversary, Applegate answered our questions on what it’s like to be a chic and in-demand movie star mama.

‘TIS THE SEASON

How much mileage will you really get from a taffeta, plaid, cocktail dress? Beauty and style expert Gretta Monahan advises to stick with the classics this season. STORY BY GRETTA MONAHAN

This holiday season, outfit your family from head to toe in festive style, without breaking the bank. The littles grow out of clothes so fast and how much mileage will you really get from a taffeta, plaid cocktail dress? We all have family pictures to take and parties to attend, not to mention the holidays themselves. Stick with the classics that can be worn again and again, long after the holiday season is over. Then, accent with colorful and luxurious touches, sure to make your holiday merry and bright! Resist the temptation to insist your children not only match each other but you as well. You don’t need to dress your children in the exact same dresses and suits to get a cohesive look. Let each family member express their individual and personal style in a unified way by keeping to a color palette, a common theme or accent item. For color combos, think a bit outside the green & red box and pair those classic holiday colors with less traditional

M I N I | holiday 12

hues. Pair red with pink and charcoal grey or green with a pop of orange or purple. Another classic wintertime combination is cream with navy blue but make it more unique by adding mustard yellow as a bold accent. Make any of these palettes sparkle with metallic accents in silver, gold or copper. If you just adore traditional plaids, take a page from Michael Kors’ chic Fall 2012 runway collection by adding pale gold lace and touches of luxurious fur (faux or real) to dresses, coats or accessories while the guys get a healthy dose of your favorite tartan. Or indulge your bohemian side with pretty prints and funky layers for the girls and fine wale cordouroys and suede accessories for the fellas. It is the most wonderful time of the year so dress your family accordingly! MORE FR OM
