DEAR READERS, BRING ON SUMMER! We’re out East in a big way again this year, and we start out our first summer cover with Nell Diamond. Nell’s very representative of the millennial mastermind. She’s a burgeoning entrepreneur, interested and excited about the possibilities where her designer sheet company Hill House Home will take her. And now, she’s got a new whole adventure in front of her as well. Nell was keeping her pregnancy under wraps at the time of this shoot,

GEORGIA NERHEI

but she recently announced that she and her husband, Teddy Wasserman, are having a baby boy. Now, Nell will be able to really road test her new products; as everyone who’s had a baby knows, pregnancy naps are one of the best parts of those nine months. The photos of Nell, taken at her family’s home out East, even seem like they have a dreamlike quality to them. I’m a huge fan already: anyone who wants to make sleeping better is a definitely a star in my books. When I was looking back over this issue, I noticed that it has a slightly nostalgic quality to it. The places where people spend their summers as children are sacrosanct, and so much of the depth of feeling people have about the Hamptons seems to come from long, lazy summers spent on the beach when they were kids.

This issue has a slightly nostalgic quality to it. The places where people spend their summers as children are sacrosanct. Zibby Schwarzman has written a particularly wonderful piece for her “Hamptons Moment” this month. It is a bit wistful as she looks back on the time when she was completely free, eating her favorite barbecue food and taking enormous pleasure in the simple activity of kicking a soccer ball. You can practically feel the sand slipping through your toes as you read her piece. Nothing is as evocative a great summer photo-essay, and we are delighted to feature Alexis Theodoracopulos’ pictures in here for the first time. Clever, handsome and truly funny, he captures his world with humor and wit. And, as June is our style issue, we have an article on swimwear designer John Glass. It’s high time that someone applied the same craftsmanship and artistry of a London tailor to men’s swimwear, and it looks like John’s cracked the code. Plus, he looks like a young Jon Bon Jovi in the pictures, only with better hair! School’s out. Have a great start to summer. Daisy Prince

VITAL AGIBALOW FOR HENSEL

DEAR FRIENDS,

“We love coming back to the Hamptons each year, because in the summer it’s a place where everyone is out and about enjoying time with family and friends.”

WELCOME BACK TO THE BEACH! We are beyond excited to be here after another long winter in the city, although we had a blast in Palm Beach and Miami. The winter was full of soirees and benefit galas, and we celebrated many of our cover subjects with wonderful fetes. But Memorial Day weekend marks the official start to summer, and we are ready for all the fun parties and charity events that come with the season. We love coming back to the Hamptons each year, because in the summer it’s a place where everyone is out and about enjoying time with family and friends. Each town offers something unique: gorgeous homes, great beaches and plenty of restaurants, shopping and cultural destinations—new and old. We had an amazing event kicking off the season in May: the Privet Hedge Awards at the gorgeous and picturesque Sebonack Golf Club in Southampton, where we honored excellence in Hamptons real estate brokerage and presented awards to Diane Saatchi of Saunders, Ed Petrie of Compass, Enzo Morabito of Douglas Elliman and Peter Turino of Brown Harris Stevens. We are looking forward to hosting more events throughout the season and hope to see you all there. Once again this year, we will publish June, July and August as AVENUE on the Beach, and we will distribute in the Hamptons and NYC so you will be able to find us wherever you may be. July is the arts issue and August will focus on families. See you all at the beach! Kind Regards, Randi Schatz

hat’s new: burgeoning mad season, buds, brides, conservation, royals and Tilda! Oceana’s annual New York gala takes on the big issues. Andy Sharpless, CEO of the organization, told us: “We pride ourselves on winning and effective policy changes that protect key habitats and species, allowing the oceans to flourish and fisheries to recover. Together we can save the oceans and feed the world.” They exceeded their goal of raising $1 million, and had a rousing auction that saw a cruise on Frank Gehry’s sailboat, Foggy (his design for Richard Cohen, who then gifted it back to him) sold two times. While the noisy primary raged outside, we applauded, as if in contrast, the honoree, soft-spoken, the accomplished Dr. Kristian Parker. As cochair Susan Rockefeller said, “You felt the Luca Guadagnino and love in the details, from the ocean photography, to the blue cotton candy, blue lagoon Ralph Fiennes Tilda Swinton drinks, even the salmon—all consciously done, with purpose and joy. It’s often said it takes a village—we liken our community to a school of fishes.” Longtime supporter Jeff Goldblum and his jazz band, the Mildred Snitzer Orchestra, delivered silky smooth music to a crowd that included David Rockefeller, Dede McMahon, Violaine (cochair) and John Bernbach, Lyor Cohen and Xin Lee, Amy Fine Collins and Jerry Speyer. We sat by the bubbling, beloved pool of the soon soon-to to-be be-relocated (at a much buzzed about spot very close by) Four Seasons. There are few actors whose work almost never misses, and so, when we were invited to Cinema Jeff Goldblum and David and Susan Rockefeller, Dr. Kristian Parker, Dede McMahon Society’s premiere of A Bigger Splash with Tilda Violaine and John Bernbach Swinton and Ralph Fiennes, we ran (or should I say swam) over to MoMA. Director Luca Guadagnino (I Am Love) gave us a sexy, lush, luxurious film with brilliant performances. Later, at Sant Ambroeus, I commented to Ralph Fiennes how much he seemed to be enjoying his exuberant, often naked character. “You have no idea,” he purred, and kissed my hand, then pulled my quivering paw to his chest four times over. Tilda rocked an off-white pleated trench by Maison Margiela (from the Artisanal Collection designed by John Galliano) then at the after party, changed into a purple bomber jacket from the brand—a color several of us sported—in honor of Prince. She is as warm a person as she is cool, and told me how, in between movies, she created a Waldorf School in Scotland for her twins. Otherworldly perfection. Geoffrey Bradfield and Xin Lee and Lyor Cohen Barbara de Portago The Versailles Foundation’s New York fundraiser has become a threeday event, featuring royals who, as president Barbara de Portago says, she “imports” as honorees. Often they are friends of hers who harken back to her days living with her late parents, the Van der Kemps, in the west wing, as they restored the Chateau de Versailles. She has continued their legacy, and has added many a project, French in origin, whether in France or here. Invited this year, were the charming Duke and Duchess of Braganza, the royal house of Portugal. Their whirlwind included lunch at director Gillian Spreckels Fuller, the “100” Gala Dinner at the Lotus Club, where cadets from the Valley Forge Military Academy escorted single ladies to their tables (“in lieu of a bevy of hairdressers,” noted Barbara). The last night, and my favorite, was intimate—just 26 of us, so I could chat with the duke and learned, among other things, that the Portuguese brought tea, Her Royal Highness the Duchess of Braganza, His Royal Highness The Duke of Braganza and marmalade and the fork to the Brits. Elbrun and Peter Kimmelman not only hosted dinner Gillian Spreckels Fuller in their grand, candlelit hall under a Medici bust, they made the soup and hen as well! ✦ 32 | AVENUE ON THE BEACH • JUNE 2016

re you having withdrawals since PBS aired the series finale of Downton Abbey this past winter? To relieve your addiction to the sagas of the British aristocracy, consider donning your finest Alexander McQueen dress and attending an elegant black-tie evening in a magnificent house with a history to rival any period drama’s plotline. On Wednesday, June 22, 2016, the Marchioness of Cholmondeley will host a lavish, exclusive event (limited to 80 guests only) for East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH) at her home, Houghton Hall. The dinner is in aid of East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices for funds required to build the nook: a new, much needed hospice in the heart of Norfolk. The nook is a visionary project destined to provide better children’s hospice care services in Norfolk County and has the royal patronage of HRH the Duchess of Cambridge, who has been a strong supporter of EACH since 2012. The charity offers care and support to terminally ill children and their families across Cambridgeshire, Essex, Norfolk and Suffolk. The fact that the charity event hosted at Houghton Hall is so close to Catherine’s heart, and is a short distance away from her own and Prince William’s residence in Norfolk, has many whispering that Catherine will be hosting the charity dinner. What is certain is that the day in Norfolk promises to be truly enchanting. Besides visiting Houghton, the lucky guests will have the option to take a private tour of nearby Holkham Hall and take tea with the Earl and Countess of Leicester. Houghton Hall is a historic country house in Norfolk, England. It is the home of David Cholmondeley, 7th Marquess of Cholmondeley. It was built for the de facto first British prime minister, Sir Robert Walpole, and it is a key building in the history of Palladian architecture in England. It is a Grade I–listed building surrounded by 1,000 acres of awe-inspiring parkland. Guests will be welcomed to Houghton with a glass of champagne in the gardens or the Red Saloon, followed by dinner in the Stone Hall prepared by international Michelin starred chefs like Sat Bains, Galton Blackiston, Claude Bosi, Tom Kerridge, and Mark Edwards of Nobu London. Before dinner and shortly after, the State Rooms at Houghton Hall will be briefly open. After dinner, guests will enjoy a performance by EACH’s Treehouse Choir, followed by coffee and cocktails in the Cholmondeleys’ private picture gallery. Some of the evening’s other entertainments will include the Jefford Brothers, Norfolk’s youth jazz band; the magician Archie Manners; and a guest speaker, novelist and screenwriter Anthony Horowitz, O.B.E. The evening is cochaired by the Countess of Leicester and Mrs. Nicholas Deterding. Please contact Philippa Pease for details. Philippa Pease, Houghtondinner@purplechillievents.co.uk

Indulge your inner child who wants more when it comes to cocktail jewelry. Costume and old Hollywood set designer for Vincente Minnelli and Fred Astaire, Tony Duquette is an American icon whose designs always embraced the motto of more is more. Duquette was the last great protégé of Elsie de Wolfe and was commissioned by the Duke of Windsor to create a necklace for the duchess in 18-karat yellow gold, which started a trend for ladies to wear yellow gold in the evenings. Now Duquette’s brilliant collection of candy-colored glamour gems is making its highly anticipated return at Kentshire Galleries at Bergdorf Goodman. Bib necklaces, bracelets inlaid with fireworks of colored stones and gum-ball-sized rings, these are the supernovas of sparkling that will set off sugar rush fireworks in every young-at-heart trendsetter. kentshire.com

Thrill of the Game Nothing comes close to that feeling of being a child and opening a brand-new can of squishy yellow tennis balls, anticipating their perfect bounciness, while eagerly lacing up your shoes. Hedge, an inaugural collection of women’s golf and tennis attire, is for those who are kids at heart when it comes to summer sports. Created by Meagan Ouderkirk and Antonia DiPaolo, this line adds a touch of old-school demure elegance to performance clothes, making it appropriate for the grown-up kids during the cocktail hour. Covering all the bases, Hedge includes dresses, skirts, flattering tops, and more. Special details include exclusive performance poly that feels like silk, a signature green hand-stitched button, stretch grosgrain trim and stretch linen. On the court or on the course, this line is a match point. hedge-quarters.com

Bring Your Literary Game to the Hamptons This Summer

THE SINGLES GAME

MY MRS. BROWN

The New York Times bestselling author of The Devil Wears Prada is back with her latest book, The Singles Game, out on July 11. After a disastrous showing at Wimbledon, America’s sweetheart, tennis star Charlotte “Charlie” Silver, turns her life around when she signs on with infamous coach Todd Feltner. The move catapults her into a world of celebrity stylists, private parties, charity matches aboard mega yachts and secret dates with Hollywood royalty. But is the life of a top-ranked tennis player all it’s served up to be?

Newly released by the highly regarded fashion writer and editor, My Mrs. Brown is an elegant and heartwarming homage to real elegance, big dreams and the surprising power of the perfect dress. The novel tells the story of Emilia Brown, a cleaning woman in Ashville, Rhode Island. When the grand dame of Ashville passes away, Mrs. Brown is asked to take inventory of her estate. It is there that she finds it: a simple yet exquisitely tailored Oscar de la Renta sheath and jacket. Mrs. Brown has to have a set just like it, and so begins a remarkable adventure to obtain one—an outfit that will say everything she has ever wished to convey about her life and the secret burden she carries. Fans of the book can catch Norwich at Southampton Books—the former BookHampton at 16 Hampton Road, Southampton—on Friday, June 10, where he’ll read and discuss his new novel.

HAMILTON: THE REVOLUTION By Lin-Manuel Miranda and Jeremy McCarter Grand Central/Melcher Media

Can’t get tickets to the sold-out musical? Sat front row but want to relive the experience? Look no further than Hamilton: The Revolution. The book brings readers behind the scenes of the runaway hit, interweaving stories of how the show was developed with the history of the titular character himself.

SHOE DOG: A MEMOIR BY THE CREATOR OF NIKE By Phil Knight Simon & Schuster

For the sports fans out there, Nike founder Phil Knight has just released his first memoir. The intrepid business magnate, who announced last year than he will step down as the chairman of the company, shares an inside look at Nike’s early days, and how an idea to import high-quality, low-cost running shoes from Japan turned Nike into one of the most profitable companies of the last five decades.

FIRST COMES LOVE

By Emily Giffin Penguin Random House #1 New York Times bestselling author Emily Giffin—the writer behind the Hamptons-set Something Borrowed—will release First Comes Love, her latest novel, on June 28. As has become her signature style, Giffin continues along the path of telling compelling love stories without forgoing the complicated details that exist in real life. First Comes Love introduces readers to sisters Josie and Meredith Garland, whose relationship is shattered when tragedy strikes. Fifteen years later, as the anniversary of the tragedy approaches, the two women are forced to confront the issues that divide them, the choices they’ve made since and the bonds of sisterhood. ✦

KIDS WILL BE KIDS Sunday BBQs on Georgica Beach Span Generations

I

’m not a huge beach person, especially “Grown-ups” at the beach in the early 1980s. now that I have four kids. By the time I load up the SUV in the morning with all the assorted child-related essential paraphernalia, from towels and wipes to buckets and diapers, I could have spent hours relaxing at home with the kids by the pool. Plus, despite how much fun we have playing in the hot midday sand, burying each other up to our necks, flirting with the surf and throwing a football, our wet and sandy exodus back to the car, loaded down with overstuffed bags, feels interminable. I know the natural beauty of the Hamptons beaches is simply unparalleled, but with all the kids in tow during the day, I never seem to see farther than the closest BPA-free, organic sunscreen bottle. But there’s one time of the summer when going to the ocean is at the top of my list. Ever since I was a child growing up in the Hamptons, I’ve been a part of our family friends’ barbecue tradition on Georgica Beach. I have faded pictures, in decades-old photo must. Bags of Tate’s cookies are tossed on the table with some albums, peeling off the paper optimistically placed crudités, which all the kids will ignore. boards behind plastic sleeves, of The children search for sticks and wood planks to make a fire my little brother and me, dressed pit in the sand for after-dinner s’mores. up in matching jeans and L.L. And then, quite simply, they frolic. These are the same Bean sweaters, barefoot in the kids who are routinely schlepped to chess tournaments, sand, smiling and laughing with travel baseball games, piano lessons, even coding class. our family friends. My parents sit But these Sunday nights, they forget all of that. They kick a in their crusty, metal, folded-up soccer ball around. They try to raise a stubborn kite. They plaid beach chairs, drinks in hand, climb up the lifeguard’s chair only to bound off it into a giant deep in conversation with friends, sand pile. (No broken bones so far.) They chase each other college babysitters scattered about in intense rounds of tag and build an occasional sandcastle, watching all of the kids, a Billy complete with moat. They act like the kids they are, the kids Joel tape playing on the boom box they should be, not the overscheduled kids they’ve become. beside them. Not only am I still in That’s me in the early 1980s. Their smiles are infectious, their laughs drowning out touch with many of the kids and A budding young photographer. And there I am, right in the middle of it, laughing and chatting, On Sunday nights in July and August, about a dozen families, many second-generation Georgica barbecuegoers, come marching down making sure my kids are okay. Each week we have our assignments: eyes lined with crow’s feet and shoulder-length dark brown hair. (Well, pizza from Sam’s, chips and salsa, cheese from Eataly, rosé wine: a a celebrity hair colorist in L.A. tried to add “natural” blond highlights

Now here I am last summer. Same beach, but I’m the mom! My twins, Phoebe and Owen, were 8 years old.

recently, but honestly, I think it still looks exactly the same.) I’m approaching a milestone birthday (you do the math) and recently got divorced. Life hasn’t exactly played out the way I thought it would, back when I was the one frolicking in the waves. Some things have exceeded my wildest dreams, like my amazing, beautiful children, and my blessed, entirely undeserved lifestyle, while others, like my career perhaps, haven’t turned out exactly as I’d hoped. At least, not yet.

“And there I am, right in the middle of it, laughing and chatting, making sure my kids are okay.” But despite it all, the ups and downs, the losses and loves, the illnesses and challenges that everyone in the group has faced, we’re still there, week after week, sunset after sunset, s’more after s’more, weathering it all together. And for that, I am beyond grateful. We might not all be best friends, but we’re in it together. Making it

through. Finding joy in the smallest details, the simplest pleasures, our children growing up together, just like we did. So this summer, even though I’ll only have the kids every other Sunday night, I’ll look forward to every single barbecue I can attend. After all, it’s not really so different from when I was young. Billy Joel is still playing at Madison Square Garden. The conversations are similar. But my friends and I have taken the place of our (somewhat) aging parents for the time being, enjoying our moment at the beach as “the grownups” until our kids, the next group, displace us too with their own broods. I only pray I’ll be around to pull out my digital photos from these summers and remind my kids of their happy place, how simple it all was. Our spot in the sand. Our moment in the sun. Overflowing with love. Knowing how soon it will all end. Relishing every minute. Even the sandy exoduses at the end of the night. Blessed to be on Georgica Beach on Sunday nights. Year after year. For the longest time. ✦

LORD O F T HE M A N N E R

COMMON COURTESIES His lordship shows you the little gestures that make all the difference To Teddy the Mutt c/o His Master and Bosom Buddy, Lord of the Manner: Is there such a thing as how not to walk one’s dog? I not only seem to be offending many a New Yorker, but rather than meet a nice lady friend, I’m a magnet for women with walkers. What’s a fellow to do? The Dogged One, Central Park West, New York

A:

Dear Misguided, Rule Number One: If you don’t enjoy the walk, they don’t enjoy the walk. And that, my injudicious friend, can lead to many a mishap. He Himself knows of a certain incorrigible canine who constantly mistakes his owner’s Hardy Amies suit trousers each morning for the fire hydrant (and has also been known to leave a dubious pond inside his Craft Atlantic sneaker shoe). Don’t treat your dog like Tinder. Pay attention below. Or you’ll find yourself less some $1,000 after Edgar leaves his mark on some chap’s Moore & Giles leather briefcase. Mind the basics. Let us not forget the late Mayor Koch’s greatest epitaph: the pooper scooper. Do the right thing or be the rightful recipient of the words “bad citizen!” (or, worse, a Park Avenue lynch mob). There are dubious exceptions: We know of one disgruntled artist who has artfully trained his bull mastiff to relieve his bowels each morning in front of Larry Gagosian’s Upper East Side townhouse. If compelled to smoke, it is inadvisable to ash one’s own dog. Prams are another matter, provided it isn’t some thoughtless mother clogging up Lexington Avenue with her covered buggy of artificially inseminated triplets. Also impermissible: the service dog scam. A Chihuahua does not make for a Belgian Malinois. There are those in need of such increasingly scarce permits. Pay up: whether on a plane (Alitalia flight attendants will greet your beloved with heavenly slices of pizza. Now that’s amore) or in fine emporiums such as CVS, where Teddy the Mutt was banished after “unknowingly” toppling a towering display of tampons (pulling down an entire Christmas tree will go unmentioned). Not his finest hour, but he took the heat. You and “your firmest friend” (said Byron) have precious time together. That is, unless you opt, like many a mogul, to take your private jet to a certain Filipino doctor who shall remain nameless (ahem, for a price), and who will clone your dearly departed 62 | AVENUE ON THE BEACH • JUNE 2016

for an astronomical sum. Better to bear in mind the organic words of that other great bard, Jimmy Stewart, and his sweet verse once on The Tonight Show about his deceased dog, Beau. Take the lead (figuratively and literally)—and your best beau will follow.

Q:

Dear Grand Fromage, What makes for a good but properly written text? I seem forever out of the loop when it comes to the right lingo and symbols, especially when trying to woo a fortysomething woman of my own age. Content-less, SoHo, New York

A:

Dear Speechless in SoHo, The art of the text is not unlike the art of style: Less is more. Think Hemingway. Pithy is powerful (particularly among thirtysomethings and below). Anything more than three sentences is Homeric. (We assume you know the ABCs of, say, when not to text or when in the company of others. Or else you’d would be writing to the New York Times’ Social Q’s (snore). Suitable for humor-free simpletons only). Onto the nitty witty: In the case of courting, you only text once. No reply means “no.” In general, best not to text when scheduling where and when to meet. It only leads to endless back and forth. Be careful with thy funniness: Suggest that you both meet in the Forbidden Books section of the Strand and run the risk of offending the illiterate. Pick up the phone: It bespeaks confidence (not the landline: it bespeaks aged). Be pleasant ly assertive. Luckily, you’re unlike the majority of divorced Upper East Side men seeking a Lolita lookalike, so a phone call won’t smack of stalking. Depending on the age, voice mails are verbose. An anachronism with the younger set. Above all, act thy age. Would a 40-year-old man wear skinny black jeans and a skimpy crew neck picked up at Sandro? Do not resort to writing “Yeah” or “Yea.” The same applies to “Dude,” “rad,” “my brother,” “bro,” “Yo,” “Peace,” “sick,” “sir,” or “Wassup?” I’ll tell you what’s up: You’re an adult with the modern-day lexicon of Cher from Clueless. As if? Yes, “Totally.” If you’re old enough to be reading this column, forget the emojis. It doesn’t take a Brown semiotics major to know your emoji IQ is constantly outdated (then again, Brown semi-idiotic graduates aren’t renowned for knowing

GARY HOVLAND

Q:

To the Honorable, What are some dos and don’ts to being a good godfather? Other than succumbing to spending a small fortune on all those Star Wars Lego sets? Dan the Divine Gramercy Park, New York

A:

Dear Fortunate One, It is a sacred honor that too many take for granted these days. Heed my words: A sinecure it is not. The obligatory christening gift aside (see Asprey, Tiffany, or Harrods), your responsibility doesn’t end there. Nor does it allow you to have your assistant choose the annual birthday or Christmas gift. Being a godparent is no mere Holiday Affair. Of course, expectations are inherently less if you don’t reside in the same city (which shouldn’t rule out the occasional phone call so they know who you are). If you do live nearby, consider it a once-in-a-lifetime chance to form a bond like no other. Do attend sporting events,

plays, recitals and graduations, feeder preschool included. Don’t kid yourself: Kids know you’re there. There’s hardly a parent today who couldn’t benefit from a little R&R from one’s flock. Take your godchild out to the ball game, the museum or the old-fashioned roller-coaster ride. No outing is too small. The simple lunch together will prove intensely gratifying. You’ll be dazzled by their knowledge, imagination and power of observation. The rewards are limitless. There are far too many gluten-free, sugar-free four-year-olds on some insane diet these days, so have some fun. Treat ’em to a concession stand of Sour Patches or the five-foot-tall sundae (you didn’t hear it from me). You’ll be long gone by the time the midnight sugar high kicks in. But be careful in your adventurous ways. Know your boundaries. Respect the basic tenets of any parent. Surprise gifts such as a lifelike, patently obnoxious Jar Jar Binks, a drum set, or any mammal larger than a hamster are no-nos. Lose sight of your parameters and you may find yourself defrocked. ✦ Editor’s Note: We at AVENUE take immeasurable pride on the occasion of the Queen’s 90th birthday and in her rewarding yet another title upon our esteemed, yet forever humble, columnist for his personal achievement and service to not just the United Kingdom and its British Overseas Territories, but the world. And that he henceforth be referred to as Lord of the Manner (however much he doth protest).

s railway depots go, Grand Central Terminal has long been friendly to foodies. With only three interruptions since the terminal opened in 1913, hungry travelers have been plied with mollusks in the venerable Oyster Bar, a lively subterranean grotto distinguished by its vaulted, Guastavino-tiled ceiling. Dining options in Grand Central multiplied after a sweeping renovation in 1998, and this spring the Danish restaurateur Claus Meyer opened Agern, a Nordic-inspired seasonal restaurant, in the former men’s smoking lounge. Mr. Meyer also planned to inaugurate an adjacent Nordic food court soon after. Such a smorgasbord of appealing eateries would have been inconceivable to the New Yorkers who passed through the city’s early railway depots in the 19th century. By 1857, the city’s first railroad, the New York & Harlem, shared a station complex at Madison Square with the New York & New Haven Railroad. The complex,

64 | AVENUE ON THE BEACH • JUNE 2016

occupying the block from 26th to 27th Street between Fourth Avenue and Madison Avenue, had low-rise buildings along the crosstown streets with a shared rail yard in between. At the southeast corner of the joint station stood a whimsical three-story structure with crenellated parapets that gave it the look of a toy castle. “The large three-story building on the north side was very likely a combined barn and office block,” according to Carl Condit’s 1980 book, The Port of New York. The barn was for horses, which alternated with steam locomotives in powering the rail cars. But if the horses housed in that barn were well fed, it is unlikely that this utilitarian station offered much in the way of dining facilities for human travelers. In 1859, however, well-shod bipeds were given a high-class stable of their own with the opening of the white marble Fifth Avenue Hotel across Madison Square at 23rd Street (the site today of 200 Fifth Avenue, home of Eataly). The 500-room hostelry had

Savarin Commuters Bar and Buffet Menus, L.I.R.R. Concourse, Penn Station, circa 1955

Penn Station’s Savarin restaurant was “staffed by imperious waiters in imperial surroundings that rivaled the Colony or Le Pavillon for panache.” a spacious dining room, which in 1865 overflowed with admirers eager to shake hands with the Civil War general Ulysses S. Grant. Other grand hotels with fine dining rooms followed, marching one by one up Broadway. In the immediate vicinity of the Fourth Avenue depot, however, high-quality culinary pickings were slim. In 1877, six years after the station had been replaced by the first Grand Central Depot at 42nd Street, the Real Estate Record and Builders’ Guide groused that Fourth Avenue above 23rd Street had suffered from “the malign influence of what was once the greatest railroad depot of the city.” The publication lamented “the strange infatuation which leads men to expect great results . . . from proximity to a large depot,” noting that “inferior hotels, cheap restaurants and low drinking saloons are the principal characteristics of this location, 66 | AVENUE ON THE BEACH • JUNE 2016

and have stamped an indelible stigma upon the neighborhood.” The first Grand Central, a mansard-roofed, Second Empire extravaganza with three towers facing 42nd Street at Park Avenue, was built by the imperious railway magnate Cornelius Vanderbilt to combine facilities for three railroads. Although the ground floor contained restaurants, none captured the public’s imagination. One ardent defender of the depot even acknowledged in The New York Times that the lowly Pennsylvania Station in Jersey City had better food. Still, a new business quarter gradually developed around the depot, replete with restaurants, saloons and hotels. By around 1880, the Park Avenue Oyster House, a raffish forebear of the Grand Central Oyster Bar, had popped up opposite the depot’s 42nd Street entrance, alongside a shop selling liquor and “segars.”

Oyster Bar restaurant in Grand Central Terminal

Travelers seeking a more refined dining experience could find it across 42nd Street at the Grand Union Hotel, an architectural echo of the aforementioned depot defined by its three towers and curving mansard roofs. An 1882 item in the Times noted that an “elegant restaurant, 75 feet square” had just been completed inside the hotel and that the “restaurant, café, lunch and wine rooms are supplied with the best at moderate prices.” One block south, also on Park Avenue, stood the more distinguished Murray Hill Hotel. Built of granite, brick and brownstone, the hotel had two grand main-floor dining rooms, each about 110 by 55 feet. “They are most elegantly furnished,” the Times observed, “with carved oak chairs, upholstered in stamped leather, with Wilton carpets, silk velvet hangings . . . and the most exquisite frescoings.” In 1902, the accidental explosion of dynamite in a subway tunnel under Park Avenue devastated both the Murray Hill and Grand Union Hotels, along with the 42nd Street façade of Grand Central. The Murray Hill “appeared as if it had been bombarded by big guns all night,” reported the Times, while

the main dining room of the Grand Union was “a scene of wreck.” During calmer times, the finest meal to be found within Grand Central Depot itself was probably the annual Christmas feast at the Railroad Branch of the Young Men’s Christian Association, located in the depot’s basement. “The fare is the best that the market affords,” the Times declared, “every kind of meat being provided, from mutton to venison.” It wasn’t until the opening in 1910 of the city’s first Pennsylvania Station, the civic masterwork of architects McKim, Mead & White, that New York was given a railroad restaurant of genuine grandeur. After entering from Seventh Avenue, visitors passed through a loggia at the end of a commercial arcade. Hurried travelers could then continue down a great staircase into the colossal main waiting room. But those with time to enjoy a good meal had two immediate options. To the left was the Corinthian Room, a formal, 500-seat restaurant with grand arched windows, where tea was poured from fine silver beneath chandeliers and a coffered ceiling. To the right was a lunch-

room with counter seating. Both rooms were lined with fluted pilasters and lit by windows overlooking interior courtyards. The night the station opened, “the Corinthian Room and the café were mobbed and noisy as New Yorkers sampled the Pennsylvania Railroad’s famous cuisine,” according to Jill Jonnes’ 2007 book, Conquering Gotham. In 1925, the restaurants were taken over by Savarins, Inc. The new menu in the formal dining room, featuring filet of sole, Long Island duckling and deep-dish peach pie, was not your ordinary eat-and-run railroad fare. After closing during the Depression, the Savarin restaurant was remodeled in 1934 and reopened, in retro style, as the Corinthian Room, this time with a ladies’ lounge and a built-in bar. A cocktail hour with music was revived. The Savarin had a good run, engendering memorable experiences across the decades. In 1938, a correspondent from The Austin Statesman discovered that if you ate breakfast in the restaurant at church-going time, you could hear “the grandest clangor of bells in

America.” With traffic almost quiet outside and “few customers in the great, high-vaulted dining room,” he observed, “the waiters move about silently.” Then the bells began their calling: “Close, right under the tall windows. Far away toward Greenwich Village; far up in the direction of Central Park . . . . No planned and scored symphony is more musical.” Years later, a Baltimore Sun writer recalled the Savarin restaurant as “a room staffed by imperious waiters in imperial surroundings that rivaled the Colony or Le Pavillon for panache.” Fittingly, it was a restaurant worker who had the last word when Penn Station served what was more or less its Last Supper. As the first demolition crews took jackhammers to the granite slabs of the station’s exterior in October 1963, a Savarin counterman ruefully told a reporter, “This city’s got the right name—New York. Nothing ever gets old around here.” ✦ John Freeman Gill’s first novel, The Gargoyle Hunters, will be published by Alfred A. Knopf in Spring 2017

FERRARI VIBES

I

s there any name more famous in the world of motoring than Ferrari? The maker of some of the most valuable and beautiful cars in the world—with an unsurpassed motor sport history spanning seven decades—Ferrari is an intoxicating combination. With an Italian flair that is utterly beguiling, Ferrari is the world’s most powerful brand, and most people would agree that it encompasses these three words: speed, luxury and wealth. One of the most iconic Ferraris of all time has to be the Testarossa. This model exemplified the glorious excesses of the 1980s and is one of my favorite cars of all time. Like many people of my generation, a picture of one adorned my bedroom wall when growing up, and driving one has always been high on my bucket list. You can therefore imagine my excitement when a friend of mine asked me to acquire one for him in the U.K.—and then offered to lend it to me for the weekend. A little background then on this extraordinary company. Founded by Enzo Ferrari, after many years of preparing Alfa Romeo racing cars for gentleman racers, Ferrari started manufacturing road cars with its iconic prancing horse logo in 1947. Initially he was somewhat reluctant to sell his cars, and he saw it only as a means to fund Scuderia Ferrari, the motor racing side of the business about which he was so passionate. However, as success on the track increased, so did the desirability of his road cars. Since production of the legendary road-going racer the 250GTO (examples of which, at $40 68 | AVENUE ON THE BEACH • JUNE 2016

million each, are the most valuable cars in the world) and the utterly gorgeous 250SWB California Spyder in the 1960s, the company has not looked back. Today Ferrari produces more than 7,000 cars a year. The last car that Enzo personally oversaw before his death in 1988 was the F40, surely one of the most famous supercars ever built. The Testarossa (literally “Red Head”) was unveiled at the 1984 Paris Salon and was an evolution of the 512BBi, albeit with a striking new body by Pininfarina. And striking it certainly is in the flesh, sitting on the driveway, waiting for me. It was the widest production car at the time, and its presence is extraordinary, those very distinctive “cheese grater” side strakes giving it an unmistakable profile. I must confess to excitement levels being really rather high as I reach under the strakes to the hidden door handle. Inside are acres of ocean blue leather and the very distinctive Ferrari gear lever, standing proud at the open gate. I have decided that you don’t need any reason to take a Ferrari out on the road other than pure pleasure. The sun is shining and I have a route in mind that will take me through Newmarket (the headquarters of horse racing and itself home to many pedigree Thoroughbreds), and out into the countryside. Some long straights and some really twisty back roads will show if it can live up to its reputation as the ultimate 1980s grand touring sports car. I turn the key, and the 4.9 liter flat12 whirs from behind me and then explodes into life. I slide the gear lever down and to the left in the “dogleg” box and gently let out the

heavy clutch, and I’m away. There is no power assistance to the steering, so maneuvering at low speeds is hard work (and not a little bit scary when there are immovable objects such as stone walls and gateposts to negotiate). However, out on the road, with engine and gearbox fully warmed, I can finally unleash the beast. The steering lightens up with speed, making the car very easy to place despite its width. Soon I am making the most of the noise from the flat-12, a sort of thrumming that at its crescendo reaches a fevered howl that can be heard from miles around. The only thing better than the sound of the engine is the delicious snick-snick of metal on metal as you change gears, which I do a great deal in order to savor that particularly Ferrari trait. The English countryside looks even more glorious from inside a Testarossa as the hedgerows flash past the side windows. I must confess that driving purely for one’s own pleasure in such a magnificent machine, and one that I had been excited to drive for the best part of 30 years, truly had me grinning from ear to ear and very reluctant to hand back the keys. However I feel very privileged to have driven a “proper” Ferrari, born in an era when il Grande Vecchio (the Great Old Man) was still alive. It certainly exceeded all my expectations, and now I don’t just want one on my wall. ✦ New York / Berkshires / California 212 274 0074 www.lhevents.com

A celebrated “It Girl,” Nell Diamond prefers to talk about the power of sleep, women in the workplace and the inspiration behind her bedding company. n magazines, blog posts, tweets and photo tags, Nell Diamond’s name often appears alongside a who’s who list of tony partygoers. Born in London, and educated at Princeton and Yale, she is the doyenne of under-30 socialites—an “It Girl,” according to a recent profile in Vogue: young, beautiful, hyperfashionable and rich. In 2014, Diamond’s fairy-tale and fireworks wedding to longtime boyfriend Teddy Wasserman at the Hôtel du Cap-Eden-Roc in the South of France lit up social media sites and magazine web pages from Town & Country, Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar to the U.K.’s Daily Telegraph, and likely raised the bar for every future celebrity and royal wedding to a point slightly beyond reach. The photograph of her Olivier Theyskens–designed gown with twelve-foot-wide, ten-foot-long train trailing down the hotel’s broad gravel boulevard at dusk is the quintessential statement of elegance and extraordinary luxury. It is the kind of image you might see displayed in a new silver frame, the one you hate to remove because its replacement would seem too pathetic by comparison. Today, at the Crosby Street Hotel in SoHo, the 27-year-old daughter of former Barclays Bank CEO Robert Diamond is eager to put that partying reputation to rest. “I like to go to interesting events and meet interesting people, but I am a serious person too,” says Diamond, who is wearing a dress from La Ligne, her close friend Molly Howard’s new label. From the colorfully embroidered monogram of her bag to the tincture of eggshell blue that peeks through her open-toe shoes, she looks like a burst of spring. Rather than talk about her stature as an It Girl, she prefers instead to discuss the power of sleep, women in the workplace and the inspiration behind her new luxury bedding venture, Hill House Home. “It doesn’t matter how many times you go to SoulCycle or how much kale you eat: if you’re not sleeping well none of that matters,” says Diamond, admitting that there have been times in her life when she’s had difficulty sleeping. “But by taking measured steps, the quality of your sleep is something you can improve. I look at decorating your bedroom and your home the same way—not to be complacent, but rather to make conscious choices, which is the entire basis of Hill House Home. Just as you can take steps to have a better career, you can improve your surroundings and the way you interact with your environment, and ultimately the way you sleep.” In January, with a kickoff fete at the Standard High Line hotel—attendees included Prabal Gurung, Claire Distenfeld, Monique Péan and Bee Shaffer—Ms. Diamond officially launched her online-only company, named for the London school where her older brother studied as well as a street near the Yale School of Management, which she attended after resigning from her trading position at Deutsche Bank in August 2012. After studying the market for home goods, she recognized that sheets, in particular, were an underserved category in terms of price, quality and design. And so they became the core of her business.

M

otivated by an obsession with quality bedding and perhaps a mild to moderate love of napping, Diamond built Hill House Home with a solid business plan. Sheets are made from 100 percent Supima cotton, grown in the United States; woven into fabric at an Italian mill just outside of Milan; and then cut, sewn and finished at a family-owned factory in France. The collection is currently offered in five designs—Ivy, Chancery Lane, Vale, Waverly and Savile—and available in four sets or as separates. Accessories include a line of unisex terrycloth bathrobes and sateen pajamas for both him and her. The website includes a blog called 40 Winks, where both the sleepless and the well-rested can find tips on how to take the perfect daytime nap, properly fold previously wadded fitted sheets, or decode the jargon behind the myth of thread counts. The plan is to establish Hill House Home as “the” sheet experts, the company that people go to when thinking about their bed and their bedroom. Afterward, Ms. Diamond says she would like to build out the business into a home and lifestyle company, applying the same kind of strategy that she applied to the core business—not just create something that exists in the market already, but something new that adds value to people’s lives, whether that value is an easier online customer experience or a less expensive product, or whether the value is a fresh design that people have never experienced. “People define value in different things. I want to add value to people’s lives when they shop for their home,” she says. It is this concept of home that seems to be on the forefront of the young entrepreneur’s thoughts these days. She and her husband, who is a managing director at Deutsche Bank, are near completing a two-year gut renovation of their West Village apartment. They are also expecting their first child. How Diamond will balance new motherhood and the management of Hill House Home will be a challenge, one she is looking forward to, she says. A big part of that puzzle is perhaps to reexamine conventional expectations of career and home life, and redefine the way they complement each other. “When I was in finance, I couldn’t see myself in any of the people who were older than me. I would look around and think, ‘There are no women over 30 here!’ So it’s very important to me,” Diamond says, “that I build a company that changes the conversation around what it means to be a woman who works.” JUNE 2016 • AVENUE ON THE BEACH | 77

Newly pregnant, the concept of home is at the forefront of Diamond’s thoughts these days, as she looks forward to the challenge of balancing new motherhood and Hill House Home.

A

s Diamond plots this next chapter in her autobiography, she will have no shortage of female mentors to guide her. When she thinks about her career, she says she looks at the women whom she admires and from whom she derives strength and encouragement in the incredible things they are doing. Among leaders and role models she considers inspirational: Emily Weiss, founder and CEO of Into the Gloss; Leandra Medine at Man Repeller; Sara Blakely, founder of Spanx; Oprah of course; and Arianna Huffington, author of the newly released book The Sleep Revolution and someone who also believes a day’s success depends on a clean, unlighted place and a solid night’s rest. “When I consider my career I look to people whom I admire. I find strength and inspiration from women who are accomplishing incredible things. That motivates me,” she says. “I feel very strongly about the intersection between the state of women in the workplace today and the company that I’m trying to create. It’s important to me that I hire women. It’s important to me that I promote women.” As for her It Girl status, Diamond puts the appellation into perspective: “You don’t see a lot of guys called that.” ✦

“ SWIMWEAR IS PROBABLY THE ONE ARTICLE OF CLOTHING FOR WHICH MEN ARE GIVEN FREE REIN TO WEAR LOUD AND FUNKY PRINTS.”

ohn Glass was probably always destined for a career in fashion. “My earliest memory is of my father handing me a swatch of herringbone and explaining what it was,” he says. John is relaxed and at ease during our photo shoot in Southampton. His blond hair is a bit messy, and he smiles warmly while we talk. The conversation is easy, and there is a natural, charming, low-key quality about him. A native New Yorker, Glass graduated from St Bernard’s School before moving to London to attend Richmond University, where he got a degree in ancient history. While living in London, Glass spent a lot of his time with the experts on Savile Row. “I had the tailoring bug from a young age, but that really kicked into gear in London when I could drop into tailors’ shops and really get into proper clothing, and fit and construction,” he says. Originally, Glass wanted to work in the art world, but when an internship opportunity to work for Tom Ford came up, he took it and joined the brand’s image and marketing department. But his desire to be in design remained strong, and four years ago he decided to launch an eponymous label, GLASS NYC. “I decided on swimwear because I both didn’t know of any brands that I liked and because I feel it allows me to be very creative within the product,” he explains. He decided to start small. The first collection had only one style in a few prints. Influenced by his love of art and his sophisticated eye, the swimwear was a wild success. The jeunesse dorée adored the clever, witty ideas behind the line. One print, inspired by his love of the ancient world, was a reproduction of Emperor Caligula’s head, the Caligula Coin. “Swimwear is probably the one article of clothing for which men are given free rein to wear loud and funky prints, so I thought it was time someone made trunks that aren’t just plain colored or printed with just the standard crabs, shells and flowers,” he says. John is a perfectionist when it comes to the quality of his product. All the suits are made in Istanbul and digitally printed on a light, soft and fast-drying fabric woven specifically for GLASS. All the trimmings are custom made as well, from the zipper pulls to the cord ends on the drawstring. The flattering fit stems from his obsession with bespoke tailoring. And then there are the prints, whimsical and with a sense of humor—from omakase sushi pieces to the iconic Nami wave that set GLASS apart and gives it that unique touch. “I have been really influenced by a lot of artists,” he says. “We do two prints each season in different colorways inspired by Frank Stella and Larry Poons. I also like to have some photographic prints, some figurative illustrations, and some abstract ones,” he explains. Having sold exclusive prints for Moda Operandi, at the moment GLASS can be found only online at glass-nyc.com. With the volume of sales constantly increasing, however, the plan is to expand into select stores around the world in the following year. “I’d definitely say the biggest change with GLASS is that in our first season, I knew more than half our customers, and now it’s probably only about 5 percent. I now know that our success isn’t just due to charitable friends,” he laughs. When not traveling between New York, Istanbul and London, Southampton has become John’s favorite getaway both in the summer and especially off-season. “I really love to drive on back roads out here, when you catch these beautiful sunsets over the fields where the treetops meet one another above the middle of the street. There is a slowness to it. I find that pace and time really cathartic and dreamlike,” he says. “And the beaches are great too of course.” ✦

Pierre’s, the iconic French restaurant on Main Street in Bridgehampton, has exciting news. Last year, founder Pierre Weber launched Pierre’s Upstairs, a members-only club located above the restaurant. The exclusive space offers a discreet, comfortable place for Pierre’s longtime fans to regroup. Members enjoy special access to Pierre’s social events and the option to rent the space out for private gatherings, as well as preferred seating at the restaurant and priority access to the lounge and bar. More recently, Pierre has taken over the former Sagg General Store on Sagg Main Street in Sagaponack. Newly renamed Pierre’s, the market will maintain the feel and spirit of the general store, but with a more updates and more food choices. Jean-Georges Heads East

Celebrity chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten will take over the restaurant at Bridgehampton’s historic Topping Rose House. Though Vongerichten is behind a number of New York City restaurants, including his namesake Jean-Georges, this will be his first foray into the Hamptons dining scene. The space, which is a part of a luxury hotel, is no stranger to celebrity chefs; it was originally helmed by Top Chef’s Tom Colicchio, who left in 2014. The restaurant is housed in the 1842-era Greek Revival home built for Judge Abraham Topping Rose, which opened in 2012 after a complete renovation. Zach Erdem, the restaurateur behind iconic Main Street establishment 75 Main, is expanding his Hamptons footprint. Erdem has purchased the space at 136 Main Street, Southampton, which was most recently Nammos Estiatorio and, previously, Nello’s, where Erdem once worked. The space will be a revamped restaurant, hotel and nightclub called Kozu. Chef John Keller, formerly of Nobu, will helm the space, which will feature Japanease flavors and sushi with a Peruvian influence. Erdem has also purchased 125 Tuckahoe Lane, which was 1OAK nightclub last summer. It will soon be turned into a new club called AM Southampton, featuring weekly hip hop nights, as well as special house DJs Kozu, 136 Main Street, Southampton. 631.619.6660 AM Southampton Nightclub, 125 Tuckahoe Lane, Southampton. 631.353.3888, amsouthampton.com

A Grey Day in Montauk

Grey Lady, which focuses on seafood and New England coastal fare, is coming to Montauk. With locations on the Lower East Side and in Aspen and Nantucket, the restaurant is now set to take over 440 West Lake Drive, Montauk, which was the former Harbor space. Grey Lady Montauk will open Memorial Day weekend, with plans to serve brunch, lunch and dinner over the course of the summer. The menu will be similar to the one in the city, but heavily influenced by the local East End bounty. Grey Lady, 440 West Lake Drive, Montauk. greyladymtk.com JUNE 2016 • AVENUE ON THE BEACH | 101

New Wine at The Plaza Café

Wölffer Kitchen

Opened to great fanfare last summer, Wölffer Kitchen in Sag Harbor is ready to make a splash for its first full season. New chef Brian Cheewing focuses on a new American menu with a Mediterranean flair, and fresh, local ingredients. Everything, from the pasta to the desserts, is handmade. Also new for Summer 2016 is brunch. Enjoy the savory midday menu on weekends from the beginning of June until June 25, and then seven days a week for the rest of the summer.

The wine keeps flowing at Southampton’s Plaza Café. Consistently ranked one of the top seafood restaurants on Long Island, The Plaza Café has added a Croatian wine, Dingac Postup, to its by-the-glass offerings. Says chef/owner Doug Gulja: “I am of Croatian heritage and have been carrying a few wines from this region for many years. At first many people hadn’t even heard of Croatia, let alone that they made wines. But now word is getting out, and the quality is getting even better. I love the white wine produced there like Pošip, Debit and Malvasia, as these wines are made near the coast and are great seafood wines.” The premium red dry wine on offer is from Vinarija Dingac, located on the Pelješac peninsula. Haven’t tasted Croatian wine before? Gulija’s extensive and meticulously prepared five-star menu is reason enough to frequent The Plaza; ask about the best food pairings with the wine! The Jue Lan Club, which opened in New York City in December, is heading to Southampton. Founded by restaurateur Stratis Morfogen and his partners, shampoo magnate Alex Amano and Richie Romero, the upscale Asian restaurant will open at 268 Elm Street, in the space formerly occupied by Circo’s, over Memorial Day weekend. The restaurant is named after the Jue Lan Society, a secret Chinese art club from the 1930s. The innovative boite will bring a fresh take to the Hamptons with signature Asian dishes and a nightclub—the Barn @ Jue Lan Club—set with artistic ambience. Coming this fall: Fresh escargot! Partners Taylor Knapp and Sean Nethercott have founded Peconic Escargot, with the mission of bringing locally sourced escargot to East End and New York City restaurants. The duo conceived the idea after Knapp, a Johnson & Wales—trained chef whose experience includes a stint at Noma in Copenhagen, was searching for an alternative to imported, canned escargot. was not one of those people who loved fashion or fashion photographs from an early age. Quite the contrary. I paid no attention until my late teens, when I met a fashionable girl at college, and saw Paris and British Vogues for the first time. I was intrigued by their erotic photographs. Cherchez la femme. The seeds that sprouted, first into a decade as a fashion journalist, and now into Focus, my new book on fashion photography, were planted in that girl’s dormitory room at Vassar. At the time, I’d owned and used a good camera for several years, but I was more interested in shooting (and writing about) rock stars than women (or men) in fancy dress. My first photographic hero was Condé Nast’s second chief shutterbug, Edward Steichen, but I was more attracted to his moody photos of Manhattan’s Flatiron building and Greta Garbo than his fashion pictures. I first came across Richard Avedon’s pictures in the early ’70s when I was editing a rock magazine—and stuck his 1968 image of Lauren Hutton on Great Exuma Island on my wall. In 1978, I was walking down Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills when I stumbled across him signing his book Portraits in a store there, and I bought a signed copy. A few years later, I heard that Avedon was selling prints of his portraits out of his studio, and though I couldn’t afford one, I presented myself as an interested buyer and finagled a studio visit. I can still feel the thrill of walking through the townhouse where he worked, and looking at huge blowups of his images leaning against the walls. Not long afterward, I proposed and won a column on fashion photography in the trade paper Photo District News. At a model agency party soon thereafter, a tall, swarthy French photographer who was dating a friend, an Amazonian American model, came over and tapped me on the arm. “What are you doing here?” asked Guy Le Baube. I pointed at a model on the dance floor. “Right now, watching her.” “No, no, no, Michael,” Le Baube scolded me. “You don’t get a crush on one. The idea is to skewer as many of them as you can!” My next column was a profile of Le Baube, who showed me nude photographs of his girlfriend after our interview. Nice life, I thought, though I gently mocked him in the column. His first quote: “I am a French peasant with a predilection for people and savage living.…I have an ambiguous mind whose depths it would be very dangerous to plumb.” That contrasted nicely with a quote from the makeup man Way Bandy that I taped over my desk: “Scratch the surface and what do you get? More surface.” In 1983, Clay Felker, an acquaintance of my sports columnist father and the editor who’d created New York magazine, the favorite magazine of my youth, was starting a newspaper, and I sent him a résumé. Simultaneously, he was looking for a printer, and while visiting the one that printed Photo District News,, he read one of my columns and called me. Life takes funny bounces. My byline appeared in 11 of the 15 issues of Felker’s East Side Express that were published before it died. I wrote the cover story in the last issue. When the designer Calvin Klein and his photographer Bruce Weber both refused to speak to me about his latest ad campaign, which featured the model Josie Borain seminude wearing men’s underwear adapted for women, I gave the ads to a Jungian analyst, and asked her to deconstruct them. The story was titled “Marketing the New Ambivalence: Calvin Klein Cashes In on Gender Confusion.” A few months later, I began writing for the revival of Vanity Fair under the British editor Tina Brown, with an assignment on a hot young photographer I’d recently seen at Studio 54, Steven Meisel. When I started reporting the profile, Meisel and two friends, a transsexual model named Teri Toye and a young designer on fashion’s fringe named Stephen Sprouse, were the hot new things in New York. By the time the story ran, about a year and eight rewrites later, they’d stopped speaking to each other, and the piece was truncated into an obituary; the name I gave them was its title: “The Odd Squad.” Then, I won a job writing for the “Style” pages of the New York Times, where I profiled more photographers. The first was an assignment for the Times’ Sunday magazine. The story, on Bruce Weber, never appeared in the Times, which was then still skittish about open discussion of homosexuality, but Tina Brown promptly agreed to run it. Interviewing Weber had been a revelation, as he’d spent a lifetime studying the history of photography. I began collecting books by the figures who’d inspired him, from George Hoyningen-Huene to Lisette Model.

“AVEDON CALLED ME ALMOST EVERY DAY. TO HIS CREDIT, HE NEVER TRIED TO TAKE BACK A QUOTE, ONLY TO MAKE THEM SHARPER. FOCUS WAS BORN OUT OF THOSE CONVERSATIONS.”

y next professional home was New York,, where I wrote a fashion column and often wrote about fashion photographers and magazines, interviewing everyone from the aging Horst to S.I. Newhouse Jr., then the most powerful man in fashion media. I wrote a cover story on Steven Meisel when he published Sex,, a book of photos of Madonna. And whenever an opportunity to interview Richard Avedon arose, I’d always try to speak to him, but I could never get past his studio manager until the Hearst Corporation decided to replace the editor of Harper’s Bazaar, setting off a war with Anna Wintour’s Vogue. Suddenly, Avedon was not only eager to speak me, but called me almost every day. At the time, I didn’t understand his motivation, but in retrospect, I decided he’d chosen to use me as a vehicle to pay back Wintour, who’d ended his lucrative and prominent reign as a photographer for Vogue.. To his credit, Avedon never tried to take back a quote, only to make them sharper, brighter and funnier. My 1995 book Model, and my new one, Focus,, were both born out of those conversations. The week my piece on the long rivalry between Vogue and Bazaar ran, D.D. Ryan, a former fashion editor for Harper’s Bazaar, called to suggest I expand it into a book. Then, coincidentally, Avedon’s office called to say he was inviting me to lunch. On the appointed day, I arrived at his studio on East 75th Street in Manhattan, assuming he’d appear and we’d head to a restaurant. Instead, I was sent up a narrow flight of stairs to a bachelor’s apartment where I found him cooking swordfish. It turned out Avedon wanted to pick my brain about a multibook contract he’d just signed. After several hours, I decided turnabout was fair play, and asked him what he thought of D.D. Ryan’s book idea. “Ahh,” Avedon scoffed, “no one cares that [the legendary Bazaar editor] Carmel Snow drank at lunch. Write a book about models. No one’s ever done that.” I went straight to the nearest library to see if Avedon was right. Aside from some slight memoirs and how-to career guides, the story of modeling had never been told. It wasn’t long before I was writing Model, which the daughter of model agent Wilhelmina Cooper suggested be subtitled The Ugly Business of Beautiful Women. Ironically, though most major figures in the modeling industry granted me interviews, Avedon returned to form and refused, saying, “You have your career and I have mine. I have never spoken about the people I photographed. It’s not the kind of man I am. I can’t help you. I’m sorry.” He was happy to let me use his photographs, though, and several appeared in the book, including a contact sheet of the model sisters Suzy Parker and Dorian Leigh. Avedon explained he’d lost the negatives of the only sitting he knew of in which they appeared together. 108 | AVENUE ON THE BEACH • JUNE 2016

Model was a best seller here and abroad and helped me build a collection of fashion photos. My acquisitive instincts were constrained by the fact that I couldn’t afford my own taste. So, inspired by Avedon again, I collected contact sheets, which were then considered valueless, sometimes traded fashion memorabilia for fashion pictures, and was not too proud to beg for more, as when I aided a David Bailey project on modeling in exchange for an image. Bert Stern made me pay him for a print of the photograph of Bailey and the K C model Veruschka that appears on the jacket of Model, but gave me a discount. That O ITOR OF R D E R E E H T T A photo inspired the moment in the movie Blow-Up that graces the cover of Focus. E AS E FOX TH H T T A E In between the two books, my attention turned to subjects other than fashion, MAGAZIN TA, 1978 N A L T A but I still kept an oar in its waters. Then, in 2000, I was working for Tina Brown IN at Talk magazine when she asked me to profile Gilles Bensimon, one of the central figures in the French mob of photographers that dominated the wild-and-crazy fashion scene in the ’70s and ’80s. Bensimon was then the international creative director of Elle. Its French parent was—and remains—an exemplar of everything great about magazine publishing; the American offshoot that Bensimon ran was visceral and exciting but also a skin-deep symbol of a sea change in fashion photography. That change was not for the better, but couldn’t be ignored because fashion photography—even now, in the digital age, when it is everywhere and nowhere, all at once—retains its power to capture the feel of the times That story died, as did Talk, but I found a way to use it when my wife suggested for the umpteenth time that I write a sequel to Model, and I saw a way to write not a sequel, but a wholly different followup, by turning my camera around and focusing on photographers. My enthusiasm for the subject was undiminished. In fact, it had grown, along with my collection of pictures by fashion photographers. I now own multiple Avedons, Baileys, Sokolskys, Derujinskys, Peter Beards, a Schatzberg and a William Claxton. One, a 1939 Norman Parkinson, is 75 years old this year, but its power is undiminished Fashion photography itself is now twice that age, and for most of that time, the art-critic class considered it questionable. But its place in the cultural firmament now seems secure. Fashion, by definition, is fleeting, but these documents of its evanescent delights are forever. It turns out that if you scratch the surface, you get a lot more than just more surface. ✦ Clockwise from below left: With Isaac Mizrahi and Aly Dunne; Steve Rubell; Sigourney Weaver; Alice Cooper; and Bruce Springsteen.

ASK HALL F. WILLKIE

A question for one of the city’s top real estate experts . . . FAIR HOUSING

JACK DEUTSCH

T

Hall F. Willkie, President, Brown Harris Stevens Residential Sales 212.906.9203 or hwillkie@bhsusa.com

“The purpose of fair housing laws is to make certain that everyone is treated fairly and equally and not discriminated against.”

114 | AVENUE ON THE BEACH • JUNE 2016

o protect everyone’s rights in housing, there are important fair housing laws that underlie the principles of American culture. There are federal laws (based on the Civil Rights Act and the Fair Housing Act), and there are New York State laws and New York City laws that govern fair housing. In New York City we adhere to all three. Specifically protected categories are Age, Citizenship, Familial Status, Handicap/ Disability, Marital Status, National Origin, Occupation, Race, Religion, Sex, Sexual Orientation and Lawful Source of Income. The purpose of fair housing laws is to make certain that everyone is treated fairly and equally and not discriminated against. Although real estate brokers serve their clients in a fiduciary capacity, these laws—rightfully so—supersede these obligations. Sometimes, for even the most concerned and lawabiding citizens and professional brokers, this can be neither intuitive nor obvious. Some acts that may stem from a sense of kindness or concern could be viewed as discriminatory, and actually break the law. For example, one might think that a broker is doing a good job by not presenting property that lacks handicapped access to someone who would benefit from it. That practice, however, would be a violation of law, as it is a form of discrimination. These laws are good. Diversity is what makes our city so vibrant and productive. Real estate agents are trained to ensure that customers and clients are treated according to law. ✦

What is Michael Scott Events’ motto? The pillar of the MSE mission is represented in its motto: “Your Taste, Our Style.” The unique and rare opportunity to partner with renowned chefs, designers, planners and the like has positioned our talented MSE family to excel in our development of matching a client’s vision with that of their own—a fresh, rich, abundant and vibrant couture brand unlike that of any other, one that “just happens to be kosher.” Tell us how the company started and evolved over time. I began my professional exploration at the famed Studio 54, where I managed the food and beverage concession for the acclaimed production Cabaret and the newly reopened nightclub Upstairs at Studio 54. Here I discovered my true passions, special event production and culinary operations. I attribute my success to the continual mentorships with industry legends that I was fortunate enough to have been exposed to over the years. Now, as the owner of Michael Scott Events, I have taken, and expounded upon, that knowledge to develop one of the most celebrated catering companies in NYC. What do you think are the newest trends in entertaining/catering? I believe we are seeing a movement toward prioritizing the culinary experience. Hosts are committed to allowing their guests to enjoy true fine dining. Separating the meal from the party helps to illustrate a genuine restaurant setting where food and service are the focal points. Where do you get your inspiration for the menu and ingredients that you use? Lindsay (my wife) and I have been fortunate enough to travel far and wide following food trends and up-and-coming chefs, and exploring recognized hospitality operations worldwide. All of this makes our palates extremely diverse while providing us with up-close-and-personal tutorials in the world’s finest cuisine, service, design and aesthetics. Those near and dear to my heart are also a huge inspiration to me. When I cater each and every event, it’s as if I am entertaining in my own home. If my family and friends love it, then that’s the seal of approval.

116 | AVENUE ON THE BEACH • JUNE 2016

Who is your dream person to cook for? Not to sound nostalgic, but I love to cook for my wife and son. They are my biggest fans and greatest critics. As soon as they take the first bite, I know right away if they like it or not by the expression on their faces. That, and my wife’s brutal honesty, makes for the best barometer. What was your favorite catering job you have done? We did a wedding at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., a couple of years ago. It was an amazing experience, and an honor to be awarded access as the first outside caterer to cater a social event there. If it were your last meal on earth, what would you eat? It would either be: 1) Burrata ravioli with sautéed morel porcini and chanterelle mushrooms, a sageinfused beurre blanc, aged-five-year pecorino Romano, and shaved white truffles. or 2) Grilled veal chops with roasted cherry peppers and truffle pommes frites ✦ For more information please call 516.513.1577 or visit michaelscottevents.com

The Allure of the Hamptons AVENUE asked some of the people who know the Hamptons best— its real estate brokers—to share favorite Hamptons summer memories

“The Hampton Classic Horse Show, one of the largest in the country, takes place the last week of the season in Bridgehampton. It is an eight-day event. The competition is fierce. My daughter won grand champion of her division one year. It justified the exorbitant expense of this Sport of Kings!” Andrea Ackerman, Brown Harris Stevens

“My wedding was held at St. Andrew’s Dune Church in Southampton, a picturesque oceanside chapel nestled in the sand dunes. Its nave was the original Life Saving Station, built in 1851. The church has beautiful stained glass windows and a wonderful perennial garden.” Lauren Battista, Brown Harris Stevens

“Last summer was a culminating season both personally as well as for Bespoke Real Estate: we had the pleasure of transacting on many of the East End’s most notable properties, as well as strengthening relationships with both our clients and our friends. “One of my greatest memories in the Hamptons is a round of golf at Montauk Downs in the late ’90s with one of my closest and most competitive friends. On the second hole I got a hole in one. It was actually my second hole in one at the Downs, having done it once before playing with strangers in 1995. Bragging rights with a friend so much more fun.” Gary Depersia, The Corcoran Group

“Chartering a fishing boat in Montauk with my daughter and a few of her girlfriends on one of those perfect days in July. It was hysterical and we were eating every possible version of striped bass for months!” Deborah Srb, Sotheby’s International Realty

“I think of all the times I start my day enjoying the clouds over farm fields, the pristine beaches, picking up fresh produce at farmers markets and the joy of everyday conversations with people from all over the world.” Pat Garrity, The Corcoran Group

“Last summer, I rented out a portion of Gurney’s to throw my wife a 30th birthday party. My wife and our friends had a blast. The site did such a great job with the new renovation. I blocked off a few rooms for everybody. We made a small vacation out of it, even though we were only an hour from our house. We hit the spa all day. Had the birthday party and then closed the night at the Stephen Talkhouse. One of the best weekends I have ever had on the East End.” Matt Breitenbach, Douglas Elliman

132 | AVENUE ON THE BEACH • JUNE 2016

“My favorite memory each summer is having fabulous barbecues in my backyard with friends and family while the nights are warm. The Hamptons offers amazing farm stands with local, freshly picked produce. When paired with wild, locally sourced fish, there is nothing better!” Jay Flagg, Saunders & Associates

“Not so much a memory but a constantly recurring theme. Surf early, take kids tubing/wakeboarding/fishing, cruise to Navy Beach or Salt by boat for lunch, shop at a farm stand, barbecue in the backyard with friends. Good day.” Chris Stewart, Douglas Elliman

“So many memories growing up in Remsenburg and being the fifth generation of a fishing history. From clamming off the old Ponquogue Bridge…as my mom [Norma] would tell her four kids; “Dig deeper . . . do you want steamers for dinner tonight?” Belonging to Swordfish Beach Club, having swimming races against Surf Club ( we always won!) Learning to sail at the Westhampton yacht club…or more like learning to capsize the boat! These are memories that I wanted for my children, so my husband and I moved out; and we don’t regret one minute of that decision. Vicky Reynolds, Norma Reynold’s Sotheby’s International Realty

“One August morning my brother and I walked the beach for more than two miles to reach the haul seiner’s. After they loaded their catch, the fisherman offered us a ride, so we climbed in the truck and sat among the striped bass.” William “JR” Kuneth, Halstead Property

“Every summer, my family and friends gather at the beach to celebrate the full moon. We feast on fish and local produce and watch the moon rise above the waves, casting ribbons of shimmering light across the sea.” Mary Ellen Mcguire, Brown Harris Stevens

“I still remember arriving in Montauk as a child for the first time with my family. The salt air breezes, the crashing waves, the breathtaking ocean views. Well worth the long car ride. To this day, it’s still magical for me.” Robert Canberg, Nest Seekers International

In Pursuit of Health and Beauty

ON TH E AVENUE

Through the Decades at Skinfluence

T

aking care of your skin is one of the most important health and beauty investments you can make, but it has different needs at different stages of your life. The team at Skinfluence wisely blend the science of cosmetic dermatology with aesthetic artistry to enhance each individual’s natural facial beauty, taking into account such qualities as symmetry and proportion, color, texture and shape. While all Skinfluence patients receive a specific plan to enhance their beauty, Dr. Marina Peredo, F.A.A.D., shares her expertise about treatments that are likely to enhance a patient’s natural beauty through all of life’s phases. Skin care in your 20s and 30s is all about prevention and enhancement. Fine lines and pigmentation can begin to make an appearance, acne may be a concern, and lips may need volume to achieve symmetry. Appropriate treatments include neurotoxins, hair removal, fillers, microdermabrasion and chemical peels. Annual body checks are critical.

2

3

During your 40s, your skin care regimen should focus on maintenance. Lines and wrinkles tend to become more visible, there could be a loss of facial volume, varicose and visible veins appear in your legs, and your skin may take on an uneven tone and texture. At this age, treatments may include neurotoxins, fillers, hair removal, chemical peels and sclerotherapy for varicose veins.

At age 50-plus, the signs of aging accelerate. The skin thins, and there can be a significant loss of volume due to fat, muscle and bone dissipation and recession. The focus is on restoration. Facial asymmetry becomes more prominent, and the face and neck may also start to sag. Dr. Peredo uses a golden caliper technique to ensure that any facial enhancements appear well proportioned and always age appropriate. To continue looking your best, consider neuromodulators, fillers, lasers/IPL, multimodality Firmatherapy™ and injections into submental fat in the neck. ✦

Manhattan Media, publisher of AVENUE, AVENUE on the Beach, Dan’s Papers, and Behind the Hedges, hosted a fabulous party at the Sebonack Golf Club to toast to the top players of Hamptons real estate. This year’s honorees included Compass’s Ed Petrie, who won the Big Deal Broker award; Brown Harris Steven’s Peter Turino, who won the Broker’s Broker award; Saunders & Associates’ Diane Saatchi, who won the Hall of Fame award; and Douglas Elliman’s Enzo Morabito, who won the Master Marketer award. Sponsors of the event included The Adam Miller Group, Cook Maran, Altaneve, Château d’Esclans, Cloud 9 Exotics, Flowers by Topaz, Modern Barn Plum Builders, MC Home Loans, Peter Cook Architect and Systems Design Co.

AVENUE speaks with Mark Masone, florist and event stylist of Designs by Mark Masone, about creating lasting memories for more than 25 years and thinking outside the box. How would you describe your style? My style varies depending on the client’s wishes and ideas of what they envision their event to look like: garden, modern, lush pavé, and more.

How would you describe the Designs by Mark Masone philosophy? The Mark Masone experience is about giving each and every client my undivided attention. As a boutique-style florist, I am the owner, the wedding planner and the designer. I handle all aspects of the event: from the initial consultation to creating flower arrangements the day of the event. Planning that special day can be a stressful time for the client, and I believe dealing directly with the owner is comforting. How did Designs by Mark Masone come about? I founded the company in 1994, but my passion for flowers started when I was 14 years old and helped out at a local flower shop for an after-school job. At 18 I opened my own boutique. Now, after 25 years of creating unforgettable memories, we are a full-retail florist company delivering from Manhattan to the Hamptons and around the globe. Recently we also launched our new website with an online store, where you can order floral arrangements, unique gifts and gourmet foods.

What is your favorite flower to work with, and why? Orchids are the personification of pure beauty: they are gorgeous. I like to use hydrangeas in my designs for the big, fluffy feel and the garden look they give, and roses for the variety of colors they come in and how they open with all the petals. What are the newest trends in floral design? Trends change over time, but candles are a big must today. The energy that candles give off and reflect off the flowers is magical. The use of succulents with the feel and colors they give is amazing. Texture is very important when creating an event or even just sending a loved one flowers for a special occasion. We are seeing people using bolder colors than the traditional all-white centerpiece. But there is something pure and special about all-white and ivory floral design.

pale yellow. Walking into the room was like being in a fragrant rose garden! Who is your dream person to design for? Oprah Winfrey. When she throws a party she doesn’t miss any details and spares no expense when entertaining her friends, from the moment they arrive to the surprise gifts at the end of the evening. She always leaves her guests in awe and talking about it for months after. Most of all, she appreciates the work and time that goes into making an event a huge success. ✦ For more information and to set up a consultation with Mark Masone, call 1.855.448.6729 or visit designsbymarkmasone.com.

What was your favorite event to work on? My favorite event was a wedding at the Ritz-Carlton Battery Park, where I collaborated with my dear friend, the late Kenny Davis from Kenny Davis Designs. We had Gustavian crystal chandeliers over each mercury glass– covered table. The event space was overflowing with 15,000 garden roses, in all shades of cream, ivory and JUNE 2016 • AVENUE ON THE BEACH | 143

The Art of Regenerative Medicine New Alternatives to a Face-lift

“M

any women (and men!) have face-lifts once they’ve exhausted the less invasive alternatives—but regenerative medicine is on a mission to make face-lifts a thing of the past!” says Dr. Steven Victor, a board-certified regenerative medicine physician. Traditional face-lifts remove unwanted wrinkles by tightening the skin, but there are historical problems with this approach: • Inability to correct volume loss: A youthful appearance includes facial volume, and face-lifts (by design) eliminate volume. • Unnatural appearance: The pulling of excess skin is not in the natural plane of the face. • Significant recovery time: Face-lifts require extensive downtime— a misalignment to our fast-paced lifestyles. Regenerative medicine brings sustainable restoration of youthful appearance by adding natural volume, improving the skin’s quality and requiring little downtime. Two techniques that deliver: 1. SAVA utilizes a patient’s own fat to improve the skin’s quality as it returns youthful volume to the face. 2. Threads are combined with a patient’s growth factors and inserted in a natural lifting position, while growth factors work to improve the skin’s quality. “Regenerative medicine brings innovative approaches to youthful appearance. We all strive to be the best form of ourselves, and regenerative medicine continues to enhance (and accelerate!) our journey!” says Dr. Victor. ✦

Luxe Living A Southampton Gem Hits the Market

A

Hamptons home is the ultimate indulgence. For the discerning buyer, Hamptons-based CB Hamptons Design LLC and ADG Development LLC craft luxury residences that boast the utmost in amenities. Their latest project, a 7-bedroom gem on Magee Street in Southampton Village, is now on the market. Here, developer Caroline Lo Faro describes the inspiration and craftsmanship behind the home. Can you describe the property? Each property we design has its own charisma and its own soul. We started designing and building our first house 15 years ago in the Village. Creating homes with a sense of place is a passion for us. We pay a lot of attention to details, and we use our European sense of style to guide us to make every property unique. We don’t rush the property and only choose top-quality products to make each house stand out. This particular property is located inside the Village at 48 Magee Street, which is two miles from the beach and two miles from the shopping on Jobs Lane. It’s a 7-bedroom traditional Hamptons-style home with contemporary details. It has all of the state-ofthe-art amenities a homeowner could want: an outdoor entertaining space; a movie room, a playroom/game room and a gym; and a beautiful pool house and pool area. We planted more than 50 tall trees and hundreds of plants, giving the property mature landscaping so it feels like it has been there for years. What inspired your design for this building? The design centers on space, light and traditional Hampton elements. The focal point of Magee 48 is an enormous great room and kitchen area, which makes it a perfect house for entertaining. Various warm, smaller spaces in- and outside the home create intimacy for family and friends.

What was it like to work with the design team and the Corcoran Group? We have been working successfully with the Corcoran Group and Shaunagh Byrne for more than 20 years. We all work very closely together on our projects. How long did it take to build this property? Can you walk us through the project? It takes time to find the right property and to come up with the perfect layout for a house. We worked two full years to finish 48 Magee, with many hours spent thinking about various elements, and going back to the drawing board. We try not to rush the process, as we know that it always pays off to invest the time in the project. We work with a local architect, Anthony Vermandois. We’ve known him for many years, and he has a great understanding of Hamptons design. And we are very lucky to work with Don Morea, who has built more than 300 houses out East. His knowledge of the area is priceless, and his quality in building is outstanding. We enjoy working together, and the trust between all parties allows us to focus on constructing the houses properly and to the highest standard without being rushed by time or budgetary constraints. What was your favorite part about working on this project? My favorite part is working closely with a very devoted local team. It is very beautiful to watch the extra effort and extra mileage everybody is putting in to make each home a house of quality. There is a sense of pride in their workmanship, and you can feel that. ✦ For more information on 48 Magee Street, contact Shaunagh Byrne at Corcoran Real Estate, 2411 Main Street, Bridgehampton. 516.729.1713. sbyrne@corcoran.com.

Building Hope Audrey Gruss at Forefront of Fight to Improve Depression Research and Care

I

t’s an understatement to say that Audrey Gruss is a busy woman. She is a member of the Chairman’s Council of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and her charitable work also benefits organizations like Literacy Partners, the Guggenheim Museum, the New York Botanical Garden, the Inner-City Scholarship Fund, the Metropolitan Opera, Lincoln Center Theater and the Lenox Hill Neighborhood House, where she was honored this past April for her longtime support. She has also been on the Board of Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts for more than 25 years. That’s just in New York—Gruss also works with Fondo per l’Ambiente Italiano, an architectural preservation group in Italy; the American Friends of the Victoria & Albert Museum in London; and the Museum of Decorative Arts in Paris. She is also active in various causes in Palm Beach with her husband, Martin. Their Audrey and Martin Gruss Foundation funds projects in education, medical research and cultural arts. But the cause that gets the lion’s share of her formidable energy is the Hope for Depression Research Foundation, because it hits closest to home. “My mother, whose name is Hope, struggled with this for years,” Gruss says. After her mother passed away, she began asking questions, and found that research in the field had stalled. “There has been nothing new since Prozac was introduced in 1985,” Gruss explained. “It is shocking to realize that in 30 years there has been no new category of medication that works in depression and its related mood disorders,” she added. Those include bipolar disorder, postpartum depression, post-traumatic stress disorder and anxiety. The foundation’s aims are to diagnose specific types of depression, to develop new and better treatments, to improve prevention, and ultimately to find a cure. “We’re trying to find the origins and causes of depression, identifying the circuits in the

brain, and identifying the actual genes that cause depression,” Gruss says. She speaks knowledgeably not just because she’s involved, but also because she holds a B.S. degree in biology from Tufts. She had a career in business, working for J.P. Stevens, Revlon and Elizabeth Arden, and later running her own international marketing company. Her scientific training and business background has informed her approach to everything she does. “I learned inductive and deductive reasoning, and I apply that to almost any problem that I approach.” To accelerate results at Hope for Depression, Gruss put together a unique Depression Task Force (DTF) of eight leading researchers from different universities, and from different fields, such as genetics and cellular biology, who are all collaborating on a strategic plan. Each scientist is executing a piece of that plan, and entering their data in real time at a center at the University of Michigan. “It’s a new paradigm for doing scientific research,” Gruss says, “because normally research is very slow, done separately by different universities and organizations, and only when it is complete is the data shared among disciplines.” Hope for Depression is now marking its tenth year, and is making major strides; they’ve identified specific genes that are altered by depression, and discovered brain proteins that may affect parts of the brain implicated in depression. Potential new treatments may begin clinical trials soon. This summer, Gruss will be in the Hamptons, as usual. On July 30, in Southampton Village, she’ll lead the very first HDRF 5K Walk of Hope to Defeat Depression, in which participants will walk to raise awareness. With so much on her plate, Gruss somehow finds time for family and friends, as well. “My husband and I play golf together. Sunday is our day: we have lunch, we’ll play golf and we’ll watch a little bit of television. Downton Abbey was a Sunday favorite.” She planted an all-white garden at her Southampton home in honor of her mother, whose favorite flower was lily of the valley. Gruss sends bouquets to her friends when her flowers bloom in May, and does her own flower arrangements when she entertains at home. She makes applesauce from apples in her orchard, which she gives as Christmas gifts. And she loves spending time with her grandchildren and nieces and nephews. This Christmas, the Grusses gathered 18 of them, ages one to 22, for a ski vacation. “My husband and I love to entertain,” Gruss says. “Being with people and connecting, I think there’s nothing more satisfying.” hopefordepression.org ✦ — Bennett Marcus

Martin and Audrey Gruss

THE AUDREY AND MARTIN GRUSS HEART & STROKE CENTER AT THE SOUTHAMPTON HOSPITAL One year ago, the Audrey and Martin Gruss Heart & Stroke Center opened at Southampton Hospital. The Grusses love the Hamptons, spending a significant part of the spring and summer there, and realized there was a need. “We realized the statistics that in anyone over 50, the highest probability of having a medical issue is heart or stroke,” Audrey says. “We felt that we really should have the ability to be treated on an emergency basis, especially since heart and stroke are so time sensitive.” It can take almost two hours, in traffic, to get to the closest major facility, which is Stony Brook, she notes. The reception has been gratifying. “They’re now doing testing for the vascular illnesses of heart disease and stroke,” Audrey says, adding that there is a hybrid operating room, with state-of-the-art equipment for intervention in heart and stroke cases. “We’re very pleased and proud of that, and wanted to do this for our family and our friends, and the community.” southamptonhospital.org

LONDON CALLING Wendy Federman shares her favorite moments from across the pond THE GLITZ AND GLAMOUR of the Broadway world has been a part of Wendy Federman’s life for as long as she can remember. Born to a family of wellknown creatives, she practically grew up in show business and worked her way up to become a star in her own right. The multiple Tony, Drama Desk, Drama League and Outer Critics Circle award-winning theater and film producer is the CEO of Foolish Mortals Productions, and often finds inspiration from her travels around the world. As for one place in particular that Federman can’t get enough of? “London,” she says. “Where else besides New York can you see five shows in three days, go to fabulous restaurants and enjoy a city full of incredible culture and history?”

Perfect getaway

London inspires me to look for and produce grade-A-quality theatre. Back in my NYC hometown, I am the coproducer on the currently running Broadway shows: An American in Paris, Blackbird, Eclipsed, On Your Feet!, Something Rotten! and The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time. I also have my first film coming out soon, Wakefield, starring Bryan Cranston and Jennifer Garner. During my last visit to London, I attended the opening night of People Places & Things, a brilliant new play that I am the coproducer of. Besides boasting an excellent theatre scene, the city has an abundance of culture, art, music, dance, design, great food and history.

I stay at the St. Martins Lane Hotel on the border of the charming Covent Garden, near the National Gallery. Most important for me, it’s within a few blocks of the theatre district. Next door to the hotel is Gymbox, a state-of-the-art workout center, which offers more than 100 classes per week: the perfect antidote to jet lag and a long day of sitting in theatres.

Shopping scene

If I can break away for a personal treat, the go-to shoe store for outrageously fabulous, glamorous, opening-night-worthy shoes is Gina near Belgrave Square. Both their flats and five-inch heels are hard to resist. The store happens to be close to Harrods, which boasts the ultimate food court as well as any other item you could possibly want or need during your London stay.

My new favorite restaurant is Sexy Fish on Berkeley Square. For a leisurely lunch spot, I love San Lorenzo on Beauchamp Place. My daughter, who often joins me on my London trips and is a dedicated foodie, says some of the best Indian cuisine in the world is on Brick Lane. And my regular standby is the Club at the Ivy, a restaurant that is both open to the public and also has a private club, which is perfect for hosting theater partners and investors pre- and post-theatre (and often a star sighting or two).

On Saturdays, I recommend visiting the Portobello Road Market. It is the world’s largest antiques market, located in the Notting Hill district of the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea in West London. I have brought home many great finds, including a fabulous Victorian mirror that hangs in my powder room.

he low end soars as the inventory increases on the high end, numbers are skewed by a few high-end record-breaking deals. Our preliminary market report shows that prices averaged $2,072,709 in the Hamptons during the first quarter of 2016, an increase of 9.8% more than a year ago. The median price rose 4.4% over this time. The number of sales decreased 21.1% in the Hamptons compared to 2015’s first quarter. East of the Canal, in the Hamptons 62% of the first quarter sales were between $500,000 and $2 million. The North Fork is strong, and saw a 13.4% increase in transactions compared to the first quarter of 2015. The average price on the North Fork rose 3.4% over the past year, and the median price was 16.3% higher. Shelter Island also saw a rise in both average price and sales this quarter. The villages saw a rise in the average price and a fall in the number of sales. For example, East Hampton Village had 7 total transactions during the first quarter, as compared to 16 total transactions during the first quarter of 2015. Similarly, Sag Harbor Village, Southampton Village’ and Amagansett, as well as Bridgehampton, Wainscott, Water Mill and Sagaponack, all saw a drop in the number of sales as compared to the first quarter of 2015. It feels like the level of activity is increasing for the second quarter as the weather improves. Stay tuned. ✦

Dree Hemingway, the great-grandaughter of Ernest Hemingway, explained her look: “I never go sexy. I’m more into a well-made pair of pants and a good shoe.” That said, Dree is alluring as an anguished beach girl in Live Cargo. This suspense-filled film, about human trafficking between Haiti and the United States, is skillfully directed by Logan Sandler. Dree confided, “My mother [Mariel] is an actress, and my aunt Margaux was a model. It’s funny: as much as I’m all about ‘I’m my own person,’ and ‘I’m making my own name for myself,’ I have grown up in a world where most of the people are, like me, children of famous parents. So it’s easy to become a socialite and be famous for that.” Dree reminisced about the shoot on Bimini, where “Papa” Hemingway fished and wrote: “The hotel I was staying at was filled with pictures of Papa and the owner said, ‘Why don’t you bring your mother down and we will all go deep-sea diving, write and drink a lot.’ I laughed and said, “My mother doesn’t drink, I don’t write, and I guess you recognized me because Papa and I look so much alike.” With solid roles in Starlet and While We’re Young to her credit, Dree is making her own mark. The movie’s producer is Randolph “Randy” Hearst Harris, whose great-grandfather was William Randolph Hearst, the media mogul and movie producer who inspired Orson Welles’ Citizen Kane. Randy’s mother, the marvelous Anne Hearst McInerney, left her emus at Ashgrove Farm in Water Mill to give a dinner to celebrate the movie’s premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival. It’s better than in a gallery.” The forward-looking designer also confessed to an “After Jack plan.” “The house will become a house museum as opposed to a residence.” Smart move, Jack! longhouse.org

I had saved myself; it was time to turn it all around and start giving back and get outside of myself. There is an unspoken gift that the animals have given me. It has been a right of passage, a humility, a purpose, a kindness and a lack of cruelty. fter more than 50 years of working in the theater and numerous awards, stage director and playwright Robert Wilson knows how to create a sense of mystery: enthralling the audiences in his avant-garde productions, his experimental literary creations and his expectation-defying visual artwork. His illustrious career reads like a résumé of a certain enigmatic Ian Fleming secret agent: founder and artistic director of the Watermill Center, choreographer, performer, painter, sculptor, video artist, sound and lighting designer. He collaborated with fashion design duo Viktor & Rolf and did a series of video portraits with Lady Gaga. Wilson is a man so rivetingly Delphic that to celebrate his 70th birthday International Flavors & Fragrances created a new scent titled Black Rider in homage. Here, Wilson reveals his Hamptons essentials and secret insights for a summer to remember.

Boxwoods Sagaponack. Take a first look at Sagaponack’s most exciting new offering. ‘One of life’s greatest luxuries is to own and to live in a great estate where we can breathe and relax. A place to enjoy with those we love the most. Where memories and friendships are formed to own forever’, muses James Michael Howard (JMH) about Boxwoods, his latest, fully furnished, custom built 11,000 SF+/-, 7 bedroom masterpiece sprawling across 2.25 acres just a half mile to ocean beaches. A long driveway, meandering past a sunken tennis court, finishes at the arrival courtyard. ‘I wanted to design an expressive residence that was rich with detail and filled with light.’ JMH. An intimate foyer opens over oak floors to common rooms including great room, library, custom kitchen with morning room as well as the guest master suite and an additional guest suite, all having a multi-layered design aesthetic that includes dramatic ceilings, elegant moldings, heated floors, luxurious fixtures and bespoke fireplaces. Upstairs the master wing with fireplace offers his & her baths, multiple closets and south facing balcony. Two additional bedroom suites complete the 2nd floor. The lower level has tiered home theatre, exercise room, living room with fireplace, two staff suites and massage room. An elevator services all floors while Control 4 manages the entire estate which is powered by a 14 zone geothermal system augmented by a generator. A kaleidoscope of color cascades around Boxwoods as a mixture of specimen trees, colorful plantings and generous lawn embrace the dramatic 65’ mirror pool with spa serviced by dual pavilions with underground grotto that offers a view into the pool. Completely furnished, down to the smallest details, including a complete audio-visual package, Boxwoods is ready to enjoy the day you receive the keys. ‘If I could sum up in one word what all great estates should hold sacred, it would be imagination, a place that would be magical to its new owners.’ JMH.
