YAY! IT’S FINALLY JUNE! Fittingly for the first month of summer we have a lovely bride, Nicky Hilton. This will be her last cover as a single girl before she marches down the aisle with her fiancé, James Rothschild. Reading Suzanne Weinstock Klein’s interview with Nicky about planning her wedding reminded me of my own nuptials nearly eight years ago. I still remember panicking about all the details. There just seemed to be an infinite variety of choices. and the constant worry that if you made the wrong one, the choice would haunt you for the rest of your life. Of course none of that is really true (although every now and then I get a pang of irritation remembering a couple of seating screw ups.) I will say that I have appreciated being a guest at other people’s weddings so much more since being married myself. I’m sure that Nicky will feel the same once her big day is over. And speaking of weddings, I’m delighted to announce that AVENUE’s car columnist, the Hon. Henry Broughton, is marrying his beautiful girlfriend, Angela Hampshire, this summer as well. Congratulations all around! Now, some of you may have noticed that Michael Gross’ real estate column has been missing for a few issues. Michael is on sabbatical for a bit as he finishes his next book. But for those of you addicted to reading about extraordinary places and the even more extraordinary people who live in them, John Freeman Gill, a longtime New York Times contributor, will be writing for us for the next few issues. He’s written a fascinating account of the lost Fifth Avenue mansion that belonged to Yorkville beer baron Jacob Ruppert. I would also like to introduce our new columnist, Mr. Manners. Mr. Manners is a modern day Emily Post whose tips on how to navigate the shoals of modern etiquette will fill a much needed hole in our lives. He prefers to work anonymously, but perhaps some of our readers will winkle him out by the end of the summer. You won’t learn his identity from me. Finally, as everyone gears up for another amazing summer at the beach, enjoy these first few tranquil days when the cherries are at their ripest and those glorious warm months stretch out ahead of us full of promise. Enjoy the issue and the start of summer!

DEAR READERS,

WELCOME BACK TO THE BEACH! We are certainly excited to be here after a long, cold winter that felt like it might never end. But it did and here we are, gearing up for all the fun parties and charity events that come with the season. We love covering the Hamptons because it is a place where one can be out and about, as well as a great place for families and friends to spend time together at their homes. Each town offers something unique, with its own gorgeous houses, great beaches and plenty of restaurants, boutiques and cultural destinations—new and old.

Once again this year, AVENUE on the Beach will be distributed in the Hamptons and NYC, so you will be able to find us wherever you may be. I look forward to seeing you around. Kind regards, Randi Schatz

President

SCHATZ: KEITH MAJOR; BACKGROUND: DANIEL GONZALEZ

We had a wonderful event kicking off the season in May: the Privet Hedge Awards, where we honored excellence in Hampton’s real estate brokerage and presented awards to Corcoran’s Gary DePersia, Sothebys’ Harald Grant, Town & Country’s Judi Desiderio and Elliman’s Luisa Keszler at the picturesque and beautiful Sebonack Golf Club. We look forward to hosting more events throughout the season and seeing each of you there.

on men’s style. Being the modernday aesthete he is, his etiquette is impeccable. He is recognized in numerous grand country houses the world over for his use of his knife, fork and marrow spoon. Along with his inseparable pooch, Baxter the Mutt, he has traveled the globe extensively at the expense of others. When not throwing himself in front of puddles to protect lissome lads and ladies alike from being besotted, he can be seen (incognito, of course) at the very best of memorial services. Private etiquette tête-à-têtes available upon request.

Keith Dovkants is a Fleet Street journalist who spent a lot of his career in war zones. He was embedded with British forces in the first Gulf War and joined a column of tanks invading Iraq in 2003 in a 4x4. He returned to London three months later, hung up his flak jacket, and is now a contributing editor at Tatler magazine. When he’s not chronicling the lives of Europe’s grand families, he can be found aboard his 54-foot sailboat, La Allamanda, with his wife, Natalie, and five-year-old daughter, Dulcibella.

>>

Suzanne Weinstock Klein is a freelance writer and editor who has covered fashion, travel, and lifestyle for publications including AVENUE, Elle, New York magazine, Departures and Shape, as well as corporate clients like MasterCard, Elizabeth Taylor, Ralph Lauren and L’Oréal. Splitting her time between the Upper East Side and Bridgehampton, Suzanne spends her free time cooking gourmet feasts, dancing it out at Tracy Anderson and artfully Instagramming her Yorkiepoo.

Georgia Nerheim’s photograph’s are romantic, feminine and beautiful, all inspired by light and humanity. Having grown up in New York City, she still thrives in that evolving creative environment which excites, inspires and ignites her passion for photography. Georgia finds beauty in everything she photographs and adds the fantastical to each image with light and shadows like a painter. Her images have appeared in Glamour, the New Yorker, Women’s Health and other magazines. She has made her home in Brooklyn, New York where she lives and loves her amazing rescue dog named Luna.

>> John Freeman Gill is a native New Yorker and longtime New York Times contributor whose articles on the city have been anthologized in two New York Times books. The Gargoyle Hunters, his first novel, explores the illicit world of architectural salvage in the vividly crumbling Manhattan of the 1970s. It is forthcoming from Knopf.

Zibby Right is a freelance magazine writer in New York City. She attended Yale and Harvard Business School. She is currently working full-time as a stay-at-home mother to four kids under the age of 8. Her work has been published in Marie Claire, Redbook, SELF and Shape, among other publications. She also coauthored a nonfiction fashion/fitness book, Your Perfect Fit, published by McGraw-Hill in 2007. Her website, www.zibbyright.com, features most of her articles. She looks forward to summers at the beach all year long.

A MOST SOCIAL SUMMER As Manhattan’s elite pack up and head for the Hamptons, the summer social season officially kicks off

S

PATRICKMCMULLAN.COM

pring hasn’t exactly sprung—really, it eked in. Nevertheless, the season rages, albeit with fur wraps one day and sleeveless chiffon the next. We are an adaptable lot. The new Whitney opened, with weeks of welcome events. Hil, Jeb, Ted, Marco and Rufus (I made that one up: just testing you . . .) came to town to kick off the next year and a half of fundraising and feuding. Sigh. Here is a tiny smattering of the flurry of events that are spring on the Avenue. I’m not sure what’s happening with our beloved Four Seasons restaurant, but I knew I wanted to be there for perhaps the last annual Hollywood Reporter 35 Most Powerful People in Media party. So much so that I knew the only way I could make it after a seven-hour drive back from Virginia would be to change in our car. As my Charlie Rose and Katie Couric daughter drove, I contorted from one outfit to another, and at a light, on 36th and Broadway, I looked out the window and into the eyes of one of our most prolific social swans. Of course, she was at the party, and after her red carpet strut, I asked her if she wondered why I was sitting in my bra on 36th Street. She sighed, “No. I’m really in my own world.” And that is what it takes to be a true social x-ray. But I delve. All ends of media power were represented—subject, reporter, and boss—including Roger Ailes, Monica Lewinsky, Katie Couric, George Stephanopoulos, Arianna Huffington, Hilary Swank, David Muir, Charlie Rose, Barbara Walters, editor Janice Min and Ronan Farrow, with whom we sat and to whom I showed pictures of my son, because I thought they Serena McDermott, Mariska Hargitay, looked alike. Hmmm: a little Mia and Ol’ Blue Eyes? Don’t see Ashley McDermott and Audrey McDermott much Woody there. Geoffrey Bradfield, who is working on two 215,000-squarefoot homes in China (!), among other projects, also had time to design and publish a book titled A 21st Century Palace, about the magnificent penthouse in the Waldorf Astoria in Jerusalem. And what more perfect venue in which to celebrate than the dramatic, chic and oh so hot Baccarat Hotel? After cocktails on the second floor, we descended to the private room at Chevalier, under Charles Masson’s expert care. Among the lucky guests: Tony Cointreau, Michael and Tara Rockefeller, Sharon Handler-Loeb and Ambassador John Loeb, Helena Lehane, Roric Tobin and Justin Concannon, and Mark Gilbertson. Later this week, Geoffrey will be honored for David Muir his philanthropy by the St. George’s Society of New York. And the morning after his dinner, he flew to Japan. And what did you do this week? Ashley and Jeff McDermott, two of NY’s best and most gracious hosts, gave a cocktail for Maria Bello, Ashley’s brother’s ex-fiancée and the mother of their teenage son (follow closely), for the publication of her book that explains her “modern family.” After Maria, an accomplished actress, wrote a Modern Love column for the New York Times about her discovery that she was, in fact, in love with her female best friend, she realized it should be a book, and it now bears a title coined by her son, Jackson, when she told him about her new partner, Clare Munn: “Whatever . . . love is love.” Amen. Maria greeted everyone with more warmth than some of our best friends would. Among the readers and pals: hosts Mario Batali and Mariska Hargitay, Nancy and Andrew Jarecki, Andrew Saffir and Daniel Benedict, Dennis Basso, Rachel and Ara Hovnanian, Bettina Zilkha, Dermot Mulroney, and Jill and Harry Kargman. ✦ Geoffrey Bradfield

SUMMER SELECTIONS The like-its, love-its, and gotta-have-its of summer’s debut month

Home Base

Artisanal home decor giant L’OBJET is about to make scores of Southamptonites very, very happy. With the unveiling of the brand’s first ever brickand-mortar boutique along the town’s storied Main Street, the so named L’OBJET à la Plage will grant residents easy access to the latest and greatest in home fineries from opulent sculptures to high-end beach chairs. The ultimate in summer luxury, the specialty boutique has been 10 years in the making and welcome at a long last. www.l-objet.com

Upper East Side Goes East End

One of the Upper East Side’s most prolific spots has made the Southampton summer crowd very happy by bringing their celebrated menu to the beach. Le Charlot, a French bistro favorite by Manhattan’s most discerning, is officially ready for summer beachgoers after undergoing a gut renovation of its Main Street space last year. The restaurant’s model and menu will stay consistent with their celebrated city style, while the venue itself is slightly airier and beachy. 631.353.3222

The Coffee Connoisseurs

Boxed ice coffee: an idea so genius you’ll both marvel at its ingenuity and wonder why it hasn’t been done before. First bonding at Columbia Business School over their mutual home brewing hobby, Wandering Bear Coffee Co. business partners Matt Bachmann and Ben Gordon decided to take their product to the streets and give the people what they really want: caffeine. Following the same structure of boxed wine (only this is socially acceptable to drink at 9 a.m.), each box contains 12 servings of hand-brewed cold-press coffee made by Matt and Ben themselves. Available both in stores and through delivery services like Fresh Direct, you can stock your fridge and office with everything you need to get through the morning. And with a nature-inspired name like Wandering Bear, you’ll feel like you’re sipping coffee on a porch swing surrounded by evergreens instead of sitting next to a snoring stranger on the Jitney. www.wanderingbearcoffee.com

The Royal Treatment

While toasting the summer with a gathering of friends is a time-honored Hamptons tradition, it’s not always so easy to coordinate the food for your fete between the commute to Long Island and actually enjoying the beach. The Hamptons Aristocrat is all the fest without the stress, with their direct-deliver insta-party service. Describing their unique—and completely delicious—business model as “somewhere between catering and restaurants,” business partners Louisa Young and Lexi Stolz shop for, prepare, and deliver the freshest local finds direct to your doorstep. While the duo can quite literally bring the party to you, they also specialize in private meal delivery for in-home dining. Visit their website to see the ever-changing gourmet menu. www.hamptonsaristocrat.com

Auss-pitality

Hamptonites have a long-standing love of imports, from wines to watches, and Australian ex-pat James “Jamo” Willis is no different. First making a name for himself in Montauk as a surfer and nightlife impresario, this season Jamo launches Harbor, an upscale-meetsDown-Under restaurant featuring the freshest and most delicious local seafood available. While you’ve got your boat docked, stay late and enjoy the nightly dance party set to the perfect summer tracks. Open Saturday and Sunday well into the night, Harbor is the new meet-up spot for both lingering lunches and late-night libations—even dogs are welcome. www.theharbormtk.com

Lunch Break

As fun as vacation is, sometimes you just need a taste of home. Manhattan favorite Circo is setting up shop in the Hamptons this summer, treating beachgoers to their familiar gourmet Italian menu right in Southampton. Though the restaurant will feature 75 indoor seats and 50 alfresco, this Manhattan-turned-East-End favorite will surely be packed day and night. www.circonyc.com

SUMMERTIME STORIES

One of the last remaining places where it’s not only acceptable but also encouraged to completely unplug, the Hamptons’ sandy shores makes for an ideal beach read locale. Turn off the electronics—ok, we can make an e-reader exception—and get lost in these summer novels.

BOBBY WONDERFUL: AN IMPERFECT SON BURIES HIS PARENTS Bob Morris

Insightful, darkly humorous, and— above all—universally relatable, famed writer Bob Morris’ memoir recounting his parents’ final years is heavier than most beach reads but is still insightful and, at times, joyful. Few writers have the ability to frankly examine their own memories, let alone shortcomings, making Morris’ very real accounts all the more compelling. Though serious in subject matter and emotionally charged, Morris’ talent for exploring the death of human emotion and examining his own existence resonates with readers long after the memoir ends, while the book’s structure makes it easily digestible enough for an afternoon on the East End.

THE POLLAN FAMILY COOKBOOK

Corky, Lori, Dana, Michael and Tracy Pollan Suitable for every cook and entertainer—both serious and amateur—the famous Pollan family’s joint-effort cookbook is a testament not only to their seemingly genetic culinary prowess but to their closeness as well. Showcasing more than 100 family recipes, complete with colorful, bright illustrations, the Pollans meal-prep processes feature only the freshest, most nutritious ingredients, ideal for beachgoers and the health-conscious alike. With Hamptons party season in full swing, it can serve as an excellent menu inspiration or as the perfect hostess gift.

N O V E L IDE AS A BETTER MAN Leah McLaren

Leah McLaren’s novel about the pitfalls of marriage is amusing without ever forgoing substance. In order to eventually leave his marriage without sacrificing his family’s feelings—or his own financial assets—protagonist Nick decides to mold himself into the perfect husband and father. When his seemingly faux attitude adjustment starts to become very real, Nick is desperate to finally try—once and for all—and make it work. Though incredibly entertaining and easy to read, McLaren’s story is packed with barb-sharp sentences and smart observations about marriage and family structure, as well as the impact success can have on both.

MODERN ROMANCE Aziz Ansari

It wouldn’t be an understatement to describe modern love as frustratingly complex. Between Instagram-stalking potential suitors, ever-confusing emojis, FaceTime, and the frustrating are-we-are-wenot pseudo-dating that’s replaced traditional courting, it’s hard not to be completely lost—if not fully overwhelmed—with romance as we know it today. Parks and Recreation comedy superstar Aziz Ansari gets the frustration and, what’s more, is attempting to understand it in a way that’s both very scientific and wholly hilarious. Joining forces with leading sociologist Eric Klinenberg, the pair wandered the globe from Japan to Nebraska interviewing subjects, conducting focus groups, and attempting to understand life’s biggest mystery, which seems to grow more and more complex with every year.

BETWEEN THE TIDES Susannah Marren

The book’s appropriately named title aside, Manhattanite and frequent shoregoer Susannah Marren delivers one of the summer’s best beach reads with her story of a prominent New York City woman exiled to the suburbs, where she encounters an old frenemy. What follows is a literary cocktail of romance, friendship, betrayal and self-reflection in a way that resonates with women everywhere. Told in a way that’s both riveting and amusing, Marren’s familiar storytelling makes you feel like you’re hearing the latest gossip over a glass of summer sangria. ✦

THE PALM OF MY HEART Unchanged by the years, the Palm stands as a testiment to East Hampton’s history, tradition and one woman’s childhood

I

was only three years old when my famThe Palm ily started coming to East Hampton. Back then, we called it “the country.” We built our house on a plot of land surrounded by potato fields and woods. I still remember what a big deal it was when the next two houses were built on our street. Neighbors! My summers as a child in East Hampton have an idyllic twinge to them: pony rides in Wainscott, beach cookouts at Georgica Pond, riding on the back of my mother’s bike to the duck pond, outdoor showers in the fading sun, and waiting for my dad to arrive from the city on Friday evenings, my brother and I in matching robes and slippers on the front porch, our hair wet and freshly combed. Mostly, I loved going into town. I adored tasting the powdered sugar of Dressen’s donuts; buying knickknacks at the News Company; getting my Tretorns at the Village Shoe Store, where the coach of my summer soccer league worked; checking out books from Mrs. Rudersham at the East Hampton Library; buying rainbow candy dots on strips of white paper from Penny Lane; browsing through records at Long Island Sound after the movies; and, later, stockpiling my favorite the storm. The worn wood corn muffins from Barefoot Confloors, the crisp white tessa. The town was simple. The people that I used to eat as a child have changed. It’s a trendy locale, not a relaxing, remote enclave. Sometimes tastes exactly as it did back then. As I twirl it’s hard for me to adjust. I’m someone who the linguine around my fork out of my kids’ feels the loss of a favorite lipstick color or a bowls, I feel a sense of calm that no yoga discontinued ice cream flavor deeply. I crave class can deliver. I taste my childhood in that consistency and dependability. No matter how bite. Like the taste of a drink from my silver much my life changes, as long as I know there and red metal thermos. Snowflake chocolate are certain tastes, textures or places that stay dipped ice cream cones. Back dives into the pool. Baseball in the backyard with the same, I’m comforted. That’s why I cling to the Palm Restaurant my little brother, my mother’s red place mats in East Hampton as if it’s the last bastion in as the bases.

As I walk through the restaurant onto the windowed terrace with my husband on Friday nights, I’m not a thirty-something wife and mother of four. I’m the 8-year-old girl celebrating her birthday at the big corner table, listening to the baritone voices of the waiters singing “Happy Birthday” to me over a cake in the shape of a tennis court. When I order the Monday Night Salad, I can hear my parents ordering it, asking for no anchovies. I taste the onion rings and forget that I’m responsible for so much. Instead, I’m the child eating with her parents, still married then, fighting over the scraps, waiting for my mother to say, “Oh, I shouldn’t have eaten all of those!” I swing the wood-slatted door to the ladies’ room and remember my childhood friends, all of us gossiping between courses and plotting the rest of our evenings.

The Palm bar

The Palm is one of the last places in East Hampton that remains frozen in time. Preserved. Cherished. I look up at the waiter and don’t see his face; I see my old babysitter Carrie’s boyfriend, Fred, whom my mother helped get a summer job when Carrie wouldn’t come back to work unless he came too. (By the way, the two of them broke up after college.) Fred actually ended up marrying Andrea, the daughter of the owner of the Palm, and building his career at the company. After raising three boys, they separated. Thirty years after those child-

They just got married, with six sons between them! I love the Palm in a deeply personal way. I love what it represents and all the memories it contains. I love that there are no kale salads. I can hear the Billy Joel songs playing on the radio, see the Chevy Caprice Classic wagons pulling up at the valet station. And now, I love that my kids love it too. We go

at 5:00 p.m. as the busboys finish lighting tabletop candles and the waitstaff adjusts their coats, ready to go. We taste the same bread as I had as a child. We order that same pasta and Monday Night Salads. We play Hangman, I Spy and 20 Questions. And I’m a kid again. I’m sitting on my dad’s lap on his metal beach chair, my feet sandy and wet, the sun on my face. I’m playing tennis in my white tennis dress and visor, eating a FrozFruit or frozen Snickers from the snack bar as my mother laughs with the other moms. I’m playing Kadima with my brother in the yard, losing the ball in the dirt under our raised porch and fishing it out with a broomstick. I’m smelling honeysuckle in the bushes as I ride my bike, “Rusty,” into town. All the worries of my crazy day-to-day life disappear, just for a moment. So, this summer, you’ll find me at the Palm, surrounded by my kids and family and acting like a responsible mother of four. But inside, you’ll know where I really am. Lost in the summers of my childhood. Reliving them now. ✦

MR. MA N N E RS

HOUSEGUEST EXTRAORDINAIRE

How to get the ask-back (and more) from our new columnist, Mr. Manners

Q:

My Dear Mr. Manners, Rather than rent a home in the Hamptons this summer, I’ve decided to become a “professional houseguest.” Luckily, I have a number of Friends with Benefits who have spacious homes on Lily Pond and Gin Lane. How do I properly show my gratitude? And without breaking the bank? Always a Visitor, Never a Host, Upper East Side, New York, New York

A:

When in residence, be a sport like Mr. Manners’ nearest and dearest, the impeccable Prince Dimitri of Yugoslavia, and rise at dawn and whip up a simple breakfast. Your hosts will consider you forever brilliant. And do go easy on the loo paper. Asking your host for a plunger is unsavory. Or do like Mr. Manners and simply smuggle in your own. Bespoke, of course. Note: Another indispensable carry-on is Post-Poo Drops by A.P.C. Particularly when shacking up with bowel-obsessed Brits.

Q:

Dear Mr. Manners, I was recently at a sit-down dinner, and I noticed the gentleman to my left Google me during the first course. We were having a lovely conversation and then he abruptly ignored me from thereon. I’m mortified! Not to mention my self-esteem à la table has plummeted. What’s a girl to do? Dinner Party Paranoia, A Fancy Backyard Soirée, East Hampton, New York

A:

Dear Poor Placement, How do you get to Carnegie Hall? Turn off thy cell phone. The gentleman—dare I grace him as such—clearly needs practice, practice, practice. The same noblesse oblige applies to table manners, no matter the setting (or

GARY HOVLAND

Dear Hamptons Homeless, Your newfound bereft status aside (quel dommage!), Mr. Manners suggests you first invest in some decent stationery. Tout de suite. Cartier, Mrs. John L. Strong, Dempsey & Carroll or even Crane (if in a pinch, that WASP bastion Merrimade will do. Barely). The art of the handwritten note has gone the way of hieroglyphics, and so will you if you don’t start mastering your penmanship. And do be prompt with the post. I myself prefer for my first stay to come bearing a gift à la the Greeks: it presents a welcome flourish of gratitude (and might garner you a better room overlooking the sea or the Meadow Club, far away from the noisome sound of tennis balls bouncing below). Consider an opening sally of a bottle of Whispering Angel Rosé. One must assume you already know your hostess’s hue of preference (i.e., the divine Tory—as in Burch— adores orange), florist and luxe bath oil (the latter only if available on the Continent). If not, consult their interior designer or gardener, and immediately upon arrival ingratiate yourself to the staff. Do not go gaga with the prezzies on the following Monday. Think the very best of brands (not labels), but with a modicum of modesty: say, a Pratesi dopp kit or a changing towel for the beach; a giggle-some Smythson something; or the ol’ Pucci summer scarf (go vintage). Better Yet: Tap into something relevant to your stay. An early edition (second or third will suffice) of their fave writer or some novelist who came up in conversation (with the exception of Elizabeth Gilbert). Do curry favor with the master of the house: make note of his Labrador’s favorite gluten-free organic treat (or go fetch a Bottega dog leash: Mr. Manners’ mutt, the omniscient Baxter, likes Paul Smith) along with a six-pack of sirloins from Lobel’s for the golf-obsessed (yawn) hubster. Don’t opt for gift certificates from Saks in Southampton; Kabbalah bracelets; or that catchall cliché, the candle (although Mr. Manners welcomes insatiable fans to messenger Hotel Costes candles—signature Brown only, please—to his AVENUE P.O. box for his gracious know-how. Or to simply to meet him. As if!). Word to the wimpy: 68 | AVENUE ON THE BEACH • JUNE 2015

Think of yourself as the 740 Park Avenue jilted spouse who nevertheless reaped billions in the resulting settlement. You’re better off without him! (Although you might have your hacker teenage son tweak the hierarchy and content the next time one Googles you. And apply a touch of Facetune to your façade. Trust your ever-faithful Mr. Manners . . . it can do wonders! Everywhere.) And when in doubt about your self-worth, simply kneel by your trundle bed each night and utter Mr. Manners’ redoubtable Dog’s Prayer (for which we credit his Supreme Highness Baxter the Mutt): “Please, God, make me the person my dog thinks I am.” Be like Baxter and you’ll be fine, my pet, and never again be ruffled by some untoward ruffian.

Q:

Mr. Manners, I’ve just been asked to accompany friends on holiday. But they only travel by private jet. Is there such a thing as private jet etiquette? Erica All-Wrong, author of Fear of Flying Well, address withheld, New York, New York

A:

Dear Virgin Airline-r, Don’t fret. Mr. Manners to the rescue! With nary a moment to spare. Suffice to say, one salient slipup and you’ll never fly PJ again. (Reverting to commercial is for the birds. MM knows what he speaks of and only goes wheels up at Teterboro.) First and foremost (are you taking notes?), testosterone-stoked hosts like to think of themselves as captains of the skies. Upon entering the aircraft, do not sit down first. There are understood rules, and everyone—most of all, He Who Is Chartering or Owns the Plane (there is a difference) always has his preferred seat. For all you illiterates, picture the young William Shatner at the bridge: i.e., you do not have the conn. Don’t be the first to beam down and unravel the Hermès blankets draped over the back of each seat— and, despite their insistence, be a good trooper and graciously decline one of the beds later offered while crossing the Atlantic. In which case be prepared to be a listener extraordinaire: the husband’s insomniac wife is likely to drown you in 10,000 miles of drivel (if you’re prone to snoring, have your deviated septum done before. Any unwanted sonorous interruption on your part is the death knell of free flying). And don’t try to utter some conciliatory remark when approaching the plane and you notice the inevitable PJ envy in the burning eyes of your host. It’s a hopeless endeavor. Brush up on your backgammon or canasta, have some oh-so-naughty YouTube videos at hand to amuse all and, upon arrival, simply book a table for ten at GreenGo or the Jockey Club and let the champs flow. One needn’t pretend to do more (or less: MM knows of one silly guest who baked cookies for the plane—only to later realize she had confused them with her daughter’s batch of edibles). Your host well knows (and takes unconscious pleasure in) your bank account being comparatively paltry. Why do you think they ever invited you in the first place? In ego veritas, my dear. ✦ 70 | AVENUE ON THE BEACH • JUNE 2015

The House that Beer Built The rise and fall of an upper Fifth Avenue groundbreaker: the frontier mansion of Yorkville beer baron Jacob Ruppert

“S

hall Upper Fifth Avenue Be a Street of Apartments? Time to Act!” So declared a breathlessly indignant headline in a 1919 bulletin of the Fifth Avenue Association, a group devoted to defending the row of luxurious mansions opposite Central Park against “the mercenary purposes of those who seek to line [Fifth] with huge multiple dwellings.” Among the prominent landowners who rose up to fight the association’s aim of capping building heights along the park at 75 feet was beer magnate Col. Jacob Ruppert Jr., the bon vivant owner of the New York Yankees, who sought the freedom to sell

1120 Fifth Avenue, with remnants of razed Ruppert mansion at right

his ostentatious family manse on 93rd Street for a potential high-rise development. Colonel Ruppert’s willingness to see the park-facing stretch of Millionaire’s Row pass into history was a telling moment in upper Fifth Avenue’s transformation, for it was the Ruppert family itself that had pioneered mansion construction in the northern reaches of the avenue a few decades earlier. In 1880, more than 20 years before Andrew Carnegie moved into his new 64-room house on East 91st Street and began exerting a magnetic pull on fashionable downtown families, Jacob Ruppert Sr., a profusely mustachioed Yorkville beer baron, bought four lots of undeveloped land on the southeast corner of 93rd and Fifth for $63,000. There, surrounded by squatters’ shacks, the occasional stable, and a smattering of frame houses, he commissioned a bulky extravagance of brick and Belleville stone topped with an iron cornice and a mansard roof of slate and tin. Built from plans by William Schickel, a German-born architect who later designed the nearby Church of St. Ignatius Loyola on Park Avenue, Ruppert’s residence had at its front corner a pointytipped turret, tricked out with ornament and ironwork, that to the modern eye suggests an overburdened Victorian rocket ship struggling to take flight with its ungainly architectural payload.

The Ruppert mansion, around 1925

The press was gleeful in its derision. “It is evident that there are a great many things in the house . . . and that the house cost a great deal of money,” sniffed The Real Estate Record and Builders’ Guide in 1883. “But it is impossible to discern any more artistic purpose on the part of the designer than to exhibit these two facts.” Tucked in the house’s basement, adjoining a billiards room, was an amenity that no self-respecting beer baron of Bavarian extraction should be without: a barrel-vaulted Trinkstube, or taproom, wainscoted in dark oak in the fashion of old German taverns. Protruding from one wall was what appeared

to be the end of a huge barrel which in fact concealed a secret cupboard that could be opened by turning a spigot. Above the room’s Fifth Avenue window were inscribed the words “Malz und Hopfen/Gibt gute Tropfen,” German for “Malt and hops/Make good drops.” The mansion contained multitudes. The 1900 census found the 58-year-old brewer living in its spacious confines with his wife, Anna, three grown children and 13 servants, including a Japanese valet. Another child, Cornelia, had eloped in 1895 with a celebrated violinist, Nahan Franko, whom her parents considered an unsuitable mate—no doubt giving Jacob Sr. cause to make liberal use of his Trinkstube. “Cornelia scandalized the family by running off and marrying a musician,” said K. Jacob Ruppert, a great-great-grandnephew of Jacob Ruppert Sr. “Franko was a famous orchestra leader who was concertmaster of the Metropolitan Opera, but he was still a musician, and he was Jewish, and he was divorced.” When Cornelia contracted typhoid fever and died the following year, an unseemly battle ensued over the final resting place of her corpse. “Bridegroom and Father to Fight for the Dead Bride,” reported the sensationalist New York Journal with ill-concealed relish.

“No Rest Even in the Tomb for Poor Cornelia Franko . . . and Now the Suit for the Ownership of Her Dead Body Is One of the Most Pathetic Romances of Greater New York.” Brewer and concertmaster had clasped hands over Cornelia’s “magnificent coffin,” the paper noted, “and bonds thus cemented should have endured. Yet when Nahan Franko called at the Fifth Avenue mansion a few days after the funeral the doors were closed to him.” On the sly, Jacob Sr. arranged to have his daughter’s body relocated to the mausoleum of an associate at Woodlawn Cemetery. Franko fought the maneuver in court, but the brewer emerged victorious, and Cornelia’s body was ultimately placed in the Ruppert mausoleum in Valhalla, New York. “It’s almost like the route of Eva Perón,” said K. Jacob Ruppert, who has unearthed numerous cemetery documents tracing Cornelia’s circuitous journey after death. “We’re still in touch with descendants of the Franko family, so we still giggle about it.” When Jacob Sr. followed his daughter to Valhalla in 1915, he left behind a fortune of more than $6.3 million, with his widow receiving lifelong use of the 93rd Street mansion. Col. Jacob Ruppert Jr. formally took the reins of the family’s thriving brewery, which his father had established on Third Avenue in 1867 after buying timberland between 91st and 92nd Streets and clearing it with his own hands. By 1915, the brewery had expanded and could turn out two million barrels a year.

Colonel Ruppert Jr. was a man of moxie and tenacity, a former congressman who had recently become co-owner of the Yankees. One of the first players he acquired was right-hander Dan Tipple, an apt name for a brewer’s pitcher. More noteworthy was Ruppert’s purchase of one George Herman “Babe” Ruth from the Boston Red Sox after the 1919 season. Ruppert, who eventually became sole owner of the ball club, built the Yankees into a juggernaut and put up Yankee Stadium, earning a place in history as the Man Who Built the House That Ruth Built. Another place where Ruppert endorsed major construction was upper Fifth Avenue, which had developed into an opulent, far-famed mansion district. In 1921, the city Board of Estimate restricted the height of new buildings to 75 feet on Fifth from 60th to 96th Streets. But a court decision in 1923, upheld the following spring, revoked the 75-foot limit, permitting buildings twice as high, and the rush to construct high-rise apartments on upper Fifth was on. In the coming years, one great mansion after another would fall. Although Colonel Ruppert lived in the family’s 93rd Street mansion with his widowed mother as late as 1920, according to census records, the family lost no time in selling the house after her death. In 1925 the buyer flipped the mansion to a high-rise developer, and the colonel, in a sign of the times, moved directly across 93rd Street to a brand-new 14-story apartment house at 1120 Fifth Avenue.

The colonel shared his swanky new apartment with four Belgian servants, and when a reporter caught up with him in his “homey nest of 15 rooms” for an article titled “Bachelor Apartment,” the Yankees owner declared that men marry only when they are lonely or in need of a housekeeper—and that he was neither. “He likes the ladies,” the reporter noted. “He’s glad when they are married to someone else.” George E. Ruppert, the colonel’s youngest brother, did marry, ultimately returning “home,” like some kind of well-to-do Upper East Side salmon, to 1115 Fifth Avenue, the luxury apartment house built in the mid-1920s on the very site of the razed mansion in which he and his five siblings had grown up. Designed by the prolific J. E. R. Carpenter, the same architect who designed No. 1120, 1115 Fifth remains a desirable and expensive address. Apartment 5A, a three-bedroom co-op with a 40foot gallery, a wood-burning fireplace and Central Park views, is listed with Douglas Elliman Real Estate at $5,995,000. As for salvaged remnants of the demolished Ruppert mansion, some intriguing vestiges have turned up, thanks to the selective

sentimentality of Colonel Ruppert. He abhorred the notion of letting Ruppert relics get into the hands of strangers, so when the Fifth Avenue residence was torn down, the colonel took the family sleighs and other unwanted furnishings and burned them at Eagle’s Rest, his country estate in Garrison, New York. But as George Perry, his former personal secretary, recounted in The Sporting News shortly after the colonel’s death in 1939, a number of precious items were spared from the flames. “Ruppert had intense love for his mother,” Perry wrote, and when he built his Garrison home, “he moved his mother’s room from the Fifth Avenue mansion in toto, with furnishings as she left when she died. That room was Jake’s shrine.” K. Jacob Ruppert, indefatigable sleuth of his family’s history, is a periodic visitor to the colonel’s former estate, which is now a group home for needy children run by the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America. In all his visits, he has never discovered any remnants of the colonel’s mother’s relocated Fifth Avenue bedroom. But he has identified the ornate fireplace from the New York

mansion’s dining room, complete with a pair of richly carved oak satyrs. And during a tour of the estate in the early 1990s, Mr. Ruppert experienced what he described as “a big-time epiphany” after his hosts offered to show him the group home’s “alumni room.” “I was expecting a little office or something, and I walked in and said, ‘Oh my god, it’s the Bierstube from the old house!’” Sure enough, the Fifth Avenue taproom had been dismantled and reassembled in the Garrison house, right down to the clever cabinet disguised as a beer barrel and the florid mural painted in a wine-women-and-song theme. Considering that virtually no remnants survive of the sprawling Ruppert brewery on Third Avenue, which was torn down after its closing in 1965 to make way for apartment buildings (one called Ruppert Towers), the relocated Trinkstube provides Ruppert descendants with a welcome opportunity for a bit of mental time travel. “I always go to the Bierstube when I visit Eagle’s Rest,” said K. Jacob Ruppert. “I sit at the original table and chairs and I look at the original wainscoting and mural. I’m so glad they’ve preserved it.” ✦

GENTLY BENTLEY The Honorable Henry Broughton is back behind the wheel, this time in a Bentley Mulsanne.

vid Beckham and Queen Elizabeth II are fans. Acting royalty, soccer royalty, plain old royalty: that tells you all you need to know. The Mulsanne sits waiting for me outside the Port of Missing Men, my cousin’s home in Southampton. First impressions: this thing is vast, at more than 18 feet long and 7 feet wide, vast in an Atlantic ocean liner kind of way. However, all that size is partially hidden by the stunning lines, perfect dark blue livery and chrome details. It just doesn’t get much more sophisticated than this. It has been years since I have been to the Montauk Point Light, so I think a trip there to show my fiancée one of the most iconic structures on the whole of Long Island in this most iconic of British motor cars will fit the bill nicely. Climb aboard (you sit very high in a Mulsanne), sink into the acres of cream leather, marvel at the beauty of the wooden dash and press the starter button. A lovely V8 burble comes from the 6.75-liter unit, barely audible at idle, but I get the distinct impression that will change when unleashing some of its 505 horses. I am entirely correct as I head over to Bridgehampton on the back roads. I don’t know how it could possibly happen, but this car has seemingly shrunk around me, and I can really chuck it in to the

entley has been making some of the world’s fastest, most luxurious and most beautiful motor cars for the better part of a century, and when driving one you are making a very distinct statement to the outside world: “I have made it, I have exquisite taste, but I don’t need to shout about it (too loudly).” The story begins in 1919, when Walter Owen Bentley, always known as W.O., founded the car company bearing his name with his brother. A trained engineer, he had already designed aero engines for the Royal Flying Corps, and it was a combination of his skill and of the times that propelled Bentley into the spotlight. For this was the Roaring Twenties, the era of Jay Gatsby, the Charleston and flapper dresses. It was also the era when motor racing really gained popularity, and W.O. set out to build his brand and reputation not through advertising but through success on the track. In 1924 a Bentley won the second running of the now very famous 24 Hours of Le Mans, which gained him the attention of a group of very wealthy and dashing young men who wished to race his cars. The 20 or so of these young men who raced for W.O. became known as the “Bentley Boys” and included the heir to the Kimberley diamond fortune, Woolf “Babe” Barnato; ex–naval officer and adventurer Glen Kidston; international playboy and banker Baron André d’Erlanger; and Sir Henry “Tim” Birkin. Their high-living antics provided the sort of glamour that people craved, which even Hollywood would have struggled to match at the time. W.O. summed them up when he said, “When they were not yachting in the Mediterranean, skiing in Switzerland or just playing in Cannes or Le Touquet or Paris, the parties were often held in Grosvenor Square, the southeast side of which was known to every London bobby and taxi driver as “Bentley Corner.” Behind this Edwardian image of hedonism and derring-do, W.O.’s motto was “To build a good car, a fast car, the best in class.” This proved to be true: the “Boys” won Le Mans every year from 1927 to 1930. Within eleven years Bentley and his team had created one of the most glamorous brands the world had ever seen. Unfortunately, the Great Depression had its way, and the company was bought by Rolls-Royce in 1931 (admittedly not a bad parent to have), only unmerging in 2002. However, the die had been cast. In the world of fiction James Bond drives Bentleys (in the Ian Fleming novels, but not in the films), while in the real world figures as diverse as Robert Downey Jr., Da-

corners. The handling and poise is astonishing and the engine is an aural delight, the faint whistling of the turbochargers providing the treble over the bass of that big V8. Too soon we are on the 27 heading through East Hampton, but the car comes into its own for the second time: the comfort of the ride on the highway makes you feel as if you are floating across the pitted road surface, the sound deadening and allowing you to hear the proverbial pin drop. We reach the lighthouse, and I know that I have fallen totally in love with this car. At more than $300,000 it could never be described as being all things to all men, but it does what it sets out to do with pace, grace and space. W.O. would have been very proud. ✦

T

he merging of illustrious families via marriage has a long and storied history. But in a day and age when even the British royals have eschewed this long-standing tradition, it’s a rare and precious occasion when such unions still occur. Such is the July marriage of American hotel heiress Nicky Hilton and British banking heir James Rothschild, following a quiet, four-year courtship. It’s an unexpected happily ever after for those who recall Nicky in the early aughts. Nicky Hilton and sister Paris rose to fame in their teens amid a flurry of controversy and camera flashes. Blond, beautiful and gloriously wealthy from a family with a legendary lineage, the tabloids couldn’t get enough when the sisters appeared on the party circuit. Paris was clearly the wild child and Nicky far shier and more grounded. They both nonetheless ran with what was then a hard-partying crowd that included Lindsay Lohan, Bijou Phillips, Tara Reid,

Nicole Richie and Kimberly Stewart. Her exploits included a 2004 Las Vegas marriage to financier Todd Meister that was annulled soon afterward and a string of romances with famous men including actors Ian Somerhalder and Kevin Connolly, TV personality Brian McFayden, model Marcus Schenkenberg, and a lengthy relationship with David Katzenberg, the son of Dreamworks CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg. However, anyone who has met Nicky in person would find the Nicky Hilton covered in the tabloids difficult to reconcile with reality. Nicky exudes a soothing, low-key energy. She speaks softly and sparingly, taking pride in values like traditionalism, hard work and decorum. “Half of what you read about us wasn’t true,” Nicky says of her earliest years in the spotlight. “The things I would read about myself in these gossip columns growing up . . . I once read I jumped onstage at some concert and was singing with the band. I mean, can you imagine me doing that? Anyone who knows me would know that wouldn’t happen in a million years.”

time between their apartment on Bowery and the Hilton home in Southampton. “We’re very similar. Very shy, very quiet,” Nicky says, noting they’ve made a conscious decision to keep their relationship out of the spotlight, as evidenced by the lack of photographs of them together online. “We’re homebodies. It makes me sound so boring, but just to cook, relax, watch movies, read books, it’s what we like to do. Very chill.” “When I first met James at an event Nicky was doing, I remember seeing him look at her and thinking, ‘Now that is a good guy who loves her’,” says friend and fashion designer Stacey Bendet of Alice + Olivia. “It made me so happy. He’s just a humble, sweet person who truly adores her, and I think they’re going to be really happy.” Cooking is a shared passion for the pair, especially when they’re in the Hamptons. James is a master of gourmet European food, while Nicky serves up classic American fare like meatloaf and tacos. En route to the Hamptons, they stop by local farm stands for fresh ingredients on their way home

“Anyone who has met Nicky in person would find the Nicky Hilton covered in the tabloids difficult to reconcile with reality. Nicky exudes a soothing, low-key energy. She speaks softly and sparingly taking pride in values like traditionalism, hard work and decorum.” While it would have been easy to get swept up in the same tidal wave of fame as Paris, Nicky felt strongly from a young age that she was meant to take a different path, turning down the offer to film The Simple Life, the reality show that helped make her sister famous. “For anyone at that age being told we’re going to pay you a ton of money to be famous and be on a TV show it would be a no-brainer, but I had to say no. That’s not me,” Nicky says. Instead, Nicky pursued a career in fashion, designing a series of fashion lines over the years as well as collaborating with other brands on collections. Her first book, 365 Style, came out in September 2014; she recently put out a fine jewelry collection with Denovo Diamonds, and a bag collection for Linea Pelle, and a cat-eye makeup kit and campaign for Smashbox are forthcoming. But it’s Nicky’s fast-approaching wedding that is her biggest project at the moment. Nicky and James met in 2011 at the Rome wedding of Formula One heiress Petra Ecclestone and billionaire businessman James Stunt, a fact that delights her. “It goes back to tradition,” Nicky says. “In the olden days that’s where you met your husband, at a wedding.” The two hit it off immediately, but circumstances were not in their favor. At the time, Nicky was living in LA and James in London. But, after a year of making it work long distance, the two both settled in New York. Despite having the born right to claim a spot as a New York City power couple atop the social food chain, they’ve instead opted to settle into a quiet life together, splitting

and spend the entire weekend together, cooking up a storm. They make their way out East frequently, especially during the fall and winter, when the summer crowds have died down. When it came time to ask for Nicky’s hand in marriage, James took her father to East End Clambakes after a round of golf while Nicky supported the Ovarian Cancer Research Fund’s Super Saturday shop-a-thon with her mother. James finally got down on one knee and proposed in Lake Como, Italy, in the same country where they first met almost exactly three years earlier. “He didn’t ask anyone for help with the ring,” Nicky says proudly of the exquisite Asscher cut sparkler, which is the perfect size (estimated in press as between 6 and 8 carats) to make it showstopping without being gaudy. “He has very good taste.” The newly engaged duo were welcomed home with an engagement party hosted by Kathy and Rick Hilton in Southampton that included guests such as David Koch, Robert Zimmerman, Jay McInerney and Anne Hearst, Princess Yasmin Aga Khan and Bettina Zilkha. Now a mere three months out from the wedding, all of the plans are in motion. They fulfilled Nicky’s desire for a destination wedding by selecting James’s hometown of London. The intimate, black tie affair will be attended exclusively by close friends and family and celebrated with excellent wine, considering the groom’s family own the legendary French vineyard Château Lafite. While most brides would have been in a flurry over wedding plans from Day 1, Nicky was in no rush to plan their nuptials. In fact, in April, there was still plenty to be done.

“I’m too nonchalant of a bride, and I think it terrifies my fiancé,” Nicky says. “He’s always asking, ‘Did you do this? Did you talk to the caterer? Did you talk to the florist?’ I really just want everything traditional and beautiful. So many brides today want avant garde, over the top, fashiony. I just like sticking to what works.” The one thing Nicky is most certainly on top of is the dress and making sure she looks perfect in it. Always svelte but never intense about diet and fitness, she’s now working out regularly with a trainer at Equinox and working with a nutritionist on her diet in anticipation of the big day. “I’m so tired of chicken,” she says. “Anything that tastes remotely good is unhealthy, I’ve found. Even fruit—my nutritionist would say, ‘It’s all sugar, don’t eat fruit.’ I’ve been reading all these books about health and well-being—they kind of scare you into being healthy.” She lights up at the prospect of finally flying off to Paris in May, when she will be seeing her gown in person for the first time. “It was a no-brainer for me,” she says of selecting who would design the dress. Although she won’t reveal the name of the designer, Valentino seems like a safe bet, considering she regularly attends the Valentino Haute Couture show in Paris. “I’ve wanted this designer to design my wedding dress since I was a little girl, so the fact that it’s happening and they’re making me a custom couture dress is just very exciting. I was shown about 15 sketches and then came back for another round, and we narrowed it down to three and then clicked in on the one. This is going to be my first time seeing it all put together. I’ve seen a million drawings and fabric swatches but I haven’t tried it on. As part of her “something old, something new, something borrowed and something blue,” she plans to accessorize with a piece for her Denovo diamonds collection as well as a piece of jewelry from either her mother, Kathy Hilton, or her mother-in-law-to-be, Anita Guinness. Even though the wedding is still ahead of her, Nicky already has her eyes firmly on her future as a mother, hoping for two or three children, ideally including at least one girl and one boy. Considering she’s one of four children and incredibly close with her entire family, it should come as no surprise that family is something she looks forward to. What may come as a surprise is that her parents and mother-in-law all agree that Nicky will be a very, strict mother. “They always say I’m strict, and I am!” Nicky says. “Manners are so important to me. When I see children with no manners it drives me up the wall, and you have to blame the parents. It’s all about filling the children with lots of hobbies and activities so they can’t get into trouble.” Bendet, currently pregnant with her third daughter, adds, “She’s definitely going to be the mom who looks sexy until the moment she goes into labor.” While the wedding and upcoming plans, like a road trip through the American South for James’s birthday, certainly excite her, it’s clear that motherhood is the adventure she’s got her heart set on. “People say your life doesn’t even begin until you have children,” Nicky says. “I’m so excited for the next chapter in my life, having children and starting a family. There’s nothing better than that.” ✦ JUNE 2015 • AVENUE ON THE BEACH | 93

O

n a fine day this spring, James Rothschild climbed the stone tower of 14th-century St. Nicholas church in Rushbrooke, the village that was his childhood home. Almost a hundred feet below, a landscape of green fields, lakes and woodland stretched away as far as the eye could see. This was Rothschild country, the 2,000-acre Rushbrooke estate near Bury St. Edmunds in Suffolk, England. His late father loved this land and farmed it diligently; his mother bred horses here. James gazed out over the fields where he and his sisters once played, took out his camera and photographed the rambling old farmhouse that held so many memories. Then he turned his back on the scene, climbed down the worn stone steps and walked out of the church. Villagers were mystified. What did it mean? A few weeks later, in April, the entire Rushbrooke estate, including the stud farm, three farmhouses and 26 cottages, was placed on the market at an asking price of $37.40 million. Then Rushbrooke folk thought they had an explanation for James’ climb up the tower: he had been saying goodbye. The Rothschild dynasty held sway over governments and kings. The family bank financed wars and great public works alike—they once bailed out the Bank of England—and they built a string of palatial homes, filling them with dazzling treasures. It may be felt the sale of Rushbrooke marks the end of a chapter in the family’s rich story, but it probably signals a brilliant new beginning. This summer James marries Nicky Hilton, sister of Paris and an heir to the Hilton hotel fortune. Their romance and engagement have been accompanied by considerable public scrutiny, but James’s preparations for life as a married man have been more discreet. Earlier this year he quietly sold his house in Queensdale Walk in London’s Holland Park area. According to Land Registry records, the sale raised $2,558,720. Then he and Nicky were spotted browsing real estate brokers’ windows in neighboring Notting Hill, home to some of London’s most fashionable, celebrated—and wealthy—residents.

James, who has just celebrated his 30th birthday (dob: 14-5-1985) is a vice president and partner at the Monument Capital Group, whose headquarters is in Washington, DC. He and Nicky already have a transatlantic lifestyle, but James’s mother, Anita, a member of the Guinness brewing and banking dynasty, lives in London, as do his two sisters, Alice and Kate, so there is an expectation he and Nicky will have a home there. London is, after all, the seat of power of the Rothschild clan. The British branch of the family is descended from Nathan Mayer Rothschild, one of five sons of Mayer Amschel Rothschild, a coin dealer who in the late 18th century lived and worked on Jews Lane, Frankfurt, Germany. The single street was a malodorous ghetto where, one traveler observed, “Even those who are in the blooming years of their life look like the walking dead.” Mayer Amschel sent his sons to the capitals of Europe to make the family’s fortune, and Nathan settled in London. He established the N.M. Rothschild bank—still based in its original building in St. Swithin’s Lane—and dealt on London’s Stock Exchange. When

Wellington’s armies fought Napoleon he was paymaster, providing the government with cash. When Napoleon was finally defeated at Waterloo in 1815, Nathan used his impeccable network of contacts in Europe to get the news first. Instead of sharing it—even the government was unaware of the victory at first—he used the knowledge to make a killing on the exchange. Nathan was astute and acquisitive; the young man who had been a pariah in anti-Semitic Frankfurt was courted by ministers and tycoons.

His brothers were also making tremendous fortunes and between Waterloo and the First World War, the Rothschild family bank was the most powerful in the world. “Not even the biggest of today’s international banking corporations enjoys the relative supremacy enjoyed by the Rothschilds in their heyday,” the historian Niall Ferguson noted. It would be impossible to calculate just what the British Rothschilds were worth over the past two centuries (their money financed the Suez Canal, for example) but their homes stand today as testament to their extraordinary wealth. Since their first arrival in Britain the family has built or bought no fewer than 44 grand houses, among the most magnificent homes in Europe. The family seat is Waddesdon Manor, a breathtaking palace built in 1874 by Baron Ferdinand de Rothschild. It was styled on a Renaissance chateau, and its soaring turrets and carved stone facade lend it a fairy-tale air. The house, about an hour’s drive from London in the Buckinghamshire countryside, was inherited by Lord Rothschild, James’ great-uncle, in 1988, but he chose not to live there. It was donated to the heritage charity, the National Trust, and has 350,000 visitors a year. “It’s too big—not an easy house to live in,” Lord Rothschild said. His home is at Eythrope, a country house four miles away, on a curve of the River Thames. The family still entertains at Waddesdon, and parties there, as Nicky will no doubt discover, are fabulous affairs. Lord Rothschild has undertaken a major restoration, while adding to Waddesdon’s many treasures. It is said to

contain 25,000 significant works of art. The house was always meant to be a showcase for the family’s vast collection, featuring important paintings, sculpture and some of the world’s rarest and most valuable porcelain. There are exceptional examples of Meissen— including two life-sized animal figures— and a dinner service that belonged to Marie Antoinette. The wine cellars contain 10,000 bottles, some laid down 150 years ago. The Rothschilds built several homes in the Vale of Aylesbury, where Waddesdon is located, including Mentmore Towers, reckoned to be among the greatest houses of the Victorian era. Mentmore, built for Baron Mayer de Rothschild between 1852 and 1854, housed another extraordinary collection of art and furniture said to rival that of Britain’s royal family. Mentmore passed out of the

private secretary to William Gladstone, Queen Victoria’s prime minister, recorded. “One’s eyes long to rest on something which is not all gilt and gold.” To the outsider it seemed the Rothschilds had a perfect life, cocooned in wealth and privilege. Yet as the 20th century dawned mental illness, suicide and scandal were to inflict terrible damage. James Rothschild was among those who suffered from the tragedies that seemed to curse the Rothschilds. In July 1996, when James was 11, his father, Amschel, was found hanged in his room at the Hôtel Le Bristol in Paris. He had traveled to the city on business, and the French police concluded he killed himself. But why? Amschel, 40, was a much-loved and highly respected man, devoted to his family. His close friend William Waldegrave, Margaret Thatcher’s secretary of state for health and now Lord Waldegrave, wrote: “Amschel dead? It seems inconceivable . . . he loved Suffolk and his farm; he flew; he drove his beautiful old Grand Prix cars with elegance and panache. His love for his wife and his children was fierce and touching to witness. The sense of loss felt by those who loved him will perhaps never properly heal . . .” It was suggested that Amschel had been dragged away from his farm to try to rescue an ailing part of the banking empire, Rothschild Asset Management. He was not interested in business, according to this version, and succumbed to depression. The

family’s hands, and its contents were sold in the 1970s. Among works that went under the hammer were paintings by Gainsborough, Reynolds and Boucher. Also in Buckinghamshire is Aston Clinton House, which, like another Rothschild home, Tring Park, is now an educational establishment. The Rothschild family still owns Exbury, an estate on the banks of the picturesque Beaulieu River in Hampshire. Exbury is famous for its exquisite gardens, which are open to visitors in summer months. In the west of London, at Gunnersbury Park, Nathan Rothschild’s mansion is undergoing restoration prior to reopening as a museum in 2017. In the 19th century especially, the Rothschild built to impress. “We have arrived,” their palatial homes seemed to say. But solid gold dinner services, engraved with the family’s crest depicting five arrows representing the five sons sent out to conquer the world of business, were not to everyone’s taste. “The showiness! The sense of lavish wealth thrust up your nose,” Edward Hamilton, JUNE 2015 • AVENUE ON THE BEACH | 97

“blues,” as the family calls it, are a Rothschild affliction. Hannah Rothschild, daughter of the current Lord Rothschild, is a writer and filmmaker who has explored the subject in depth. Hannah wrote a highly acclaimed book, The Baroness, published in 2012, about Nica, her great-aunt, who scandalized society in the 1950s when she left her husband, the French diplomat Baron Jules de Koenigswarter, and their five children to lead a bohemian life among New York’s jazz musicians. Nica was beautiful, rich and probably a little mad. She used to tear around New York in her pale blue Bentley Continental convertible, making a grand entrance at the city’s bebop clubs, flourishing a cigarette holder and clutching a flask of whisky disguised as a bible. Hannah Rothschild chronicled Nica’s friendships with the great names of modern jazz—Charlie Parker died in her suite at the Stanhope Hotel, and she lived with Thelonious Monk until his death in 1982—and it is an illuminating and moving portrait of one of the zaniest

“The Rothschild girls, especially Kate, have become great friends with Nicky, according to sources in their set, and are looking forward to having her in London.”

Rothschilds of them all. But an important part of the book is Hannah Rothschild’s inquiry into her family’s “schizophrenia.” Nica’s father, Charles, suffered from bouts of depression and lapses into near catatonic states that terrified his family. He spent long periods in sanatoria, and Hannah Rothschild thinks it probable he was treated by Dr. Joseph Lang, Carl Jung’s protégé. In 1923, Charles killed himself at the Rothschild home in Ashton Wold, Northamptonshire. Nica’s sister, Miriam (later Dame Miriam, a renowned natural scientist and zoologist), told Hannah she had no doubts about the cause of the tragedy. She claimed the family’s long tradition of seeking marriage partners within the clan had led to inbreeding that “damaged their mental health.” Charles’s brother, Walter, who was sent home from the bank because he was deemed unfit, was delightfully dotty. He would drive around his estate in a carriage pulled by a team of zebras, and he assembled an astonishing collection of stuffed animals, including a room-sized case containing stuffed dogs. Earlier generations of Rothschilds did indeed marry inside the family. Marriages between cousins were common, and there were unions between uncles and nieces. The need to find a Jewish partner played a part in this, but there was another reason: the Rothschilds, to this day, have an unusually powerful sense of kinship. Hannah Rothschild put it like this in a quote from her great-aunt Nica: “We Rothschilds are a weird lot, but a close one.” Amschel’s apparent suicide happened nearly 20 years ago, and there has been nothing to suggest the current generation of Rothschilds suffers “the blues.” Indeed, James appears to be indefatigably cheerful. He is often to be seen out with leading members of London’s afterdark set; his best friend is Jason de Savary, a

commodities broker noted for his left-of-field sense of humor. James is close to Zac and Ben Goldsmith, sons of the late business tycoon Sir James Goldsmith. Ben was married to James’s sister Kate, who had a widely publicized affair with rapper Jay Electronica, leading to an acrimonious split from Ben. Despite this, James and Ben remain the best of friends. Zac, a Conservative member of parliament, is married to James’s other sister, Alice. The Rothschild girls, especially Kate, have become great friends with Nicky, according to sources in their set, and are looking forward to having her in London. Nicky, 31, is already a regular item in British newspapers, and recent pictures of her in New York wearing a black miniskirt and high heels prompted the Daily Mail to write: “Nicky Hilton showed the world just how to wear a mini skirt and stilettos . . .”

Indeed, it would be surprising if she did not glide effortlessly into James Rothschild’s milieu. She already knows most of his friends and counts many of them among her own. A question still to be answered is the rather ticklish one of religion. The Hiltons are Catholics; Nicky and Paris both attended the Convent of the Sacred Heart girls school in New York. The Rothschilds, by tradition, are Ashkenazi Jews. The head of James’s branch of the family, Jacob, Lord Rothschild, is active in Jewish charities, and the family supports Yad Hanadiv, its foundation in Israel, which undertakes major projects. It built the country’s Knesset and Supreme Court. Yet there has been some low-level debate in England about the younger generation’s adherence to Judaism. Lord Rothschild has said he is not “particularly

observant,” and while Rothschilds always used to look for partners inside the clan or from other Jewish families, the practice appears to have died out. On James’ mother’s side, the Guinness family is Anglo-Irish Protestant. Nat Rothschild, the 43-year- old son of Lord Rothschild, was the subject of a tease in the Jewish Chronicle, which posed the question “How Jewish is Nathaniel Rothschild?” It concluded he was only 48 percent Jewish, citing the fact that his mother, Serena, was not Jewish and that Nat had an early marriage in Las Vegas—without the presence of a rabbi. James and Nicky have doubtless resolved any religious question—if it is an issue at all—but for now they are not saying how. Despite a difference in religions, the Hilton family has a history the Rothschilds would

recognize. Like the Rothschilds, it all began in a very humble way. Augustus “Gus” Hilton left the family farm in Ullensaker, Norway, in 1870, aged 16, to try his luck in New Mexico. He opened a general store and, despite setbacks, prospered. His son, Conrad, fought in the First World War and returned to the United States in 1919 after Gus was killed in a road accident. Conrad was determined to start a bank, as the Rothschilds had done more than a century before, but his plans went awry and he ended up buying a hotel, the Mobley, in Cisco, Texas. The oil boom had begun, and soon Conrad was expanding his hotels all over the state. By 1954 he was describing himself as “innkeeper to the world”—with prizes like the Stevens Hotel in Chicago and the Waldorf Astoria in New York among his holdings. Conrad married three times; his second wife was the actress Zsa Zsa Gabor who ran up a tally of nine husbands. “I am a marvelous housekeeper,” she once said. “Every time I leave a man I keep his house.” Conrad’s son, Conrad Jr., was a playboy who married Elizabeth Taylor, but the marriage ended after nine months because of his heavy drinking and allegedly “abusive behavior.” He died of a heart attack in 1969, aged 42. The business was taken over by Conrad’s son Barron, who is the grandfather of Nicky and Paris. Their father, Rick, is a successful businessman whose real estate company specializes in homes in Beverly Hills with an average value of more than $4.5 million. Scions of the Rothschild and Hilton clans know, perhaps better than most, how great wealth works, but when it comes to eccentricity the Rothschilds probably have the edge. For many years, it was a tradition that when Rothschild children were taken to visit the head of the family at the bank, they were invited to lift, with one hand, a heavy bar on the great man’s desk. If they succeeded, they could keep it. It was an ingot of solid gold. ✦ JUNE 2015 • AVENUE ON THE BEACH | 99

The

American

Hotelier

In the summer of 2015, everyone is bullish on Sag Harbor. It has taken four decades, but the world has finally caught up with Ted Conklin. The storied owner of the storied American Hotel is on the premises a little less frequently in body—but always very much in spirit. Christopher Lawrence checks in on the old saloon that helped make Sag Harbor hot. by Christopher

obody can really remember who first said of the front porch at Singapore’s Raffles Hotel that “if one sits there long enough, one will eventually meet everybody who is anybody.” Sag Harbor cannot be said to be Singapore, but there are those summer nights when the heat is thick and damp and packs—of yachtsmen and their expensive wives, of giddy teenagers, of prosperous New Yorkers of all stripes—shuffle up and down Main Street. And when the Jitney lurches right up beside the American Hotel’s own famous porch just after midnight, well, it feels quite a bit like a festive nerve center for our very own surreal late-imperial America: “Everybody who is anybody?” On any old summer evening, there are too many boldfaced names to mention. (And fun ones, too. I ducked in a while back to buy a cigar when I collided with the now departed Larry Hagman. Major Nelson! J. R. Ewing himself! On the South Fork—and far, far away from Southfork). That same summer, Governor Andrew Cuomo’s security detail was anxious about the state’s chief executive dining with Billy Joel out on the porch. The Governor and the Piano Man. Just another steamy midseason night at the American Hotel. The Hotel’s living room–sized lobby area and its barroom marry the masculinity of the 21 Club in its heyday—particularly in the hotel’s back room—to the genteel eccentricities of a London dining club. Ted Conklin, the ever dapper owner, visionary, carpenter, rescuer, sommelier, long-ago resident and chef, and the still presiding pasha of the hotel, was born to an ancient and storied Long Island family. After making his way through Lawrenceville, Babson and a stint as a farmer near the Canadian border, he decided in 1971 that the decrepit former boardinghouse on Main Street (built ca. 1824) deserved to be revived as an oasis of civility for a town whose industrial bottom had just fallen out. The building had not hosted guests for better than four decades, and its ancient owner was using the first-floor dining room as a residence. The story of Theodore Brigham Conklin III standing in the basement, knee-deep in coal dust and removing it by the bucketful, is personal history become village lore. After banging nails and hanging wallpaper himself, he braved the winter of ’71–’72 in a building that still had four privies in back. Ted opened the restaurant for Independence Day weekend in 1972 while serving as his own chef. At JUNE 2015 • AVENUE ON THE BEACH | 101

this writing, the hotel’s wine list is better than 85 pages long, and there are more than 30,000 bottles beneath the floorboards in the barroom. Wine Spectator has faithfully bestowed its Grand Award on the cellar for decades. The hotel is presently one of only 87 restaurants worldwide to receive the honor. Meanwhile, outside the hotel’s doors, Sag Harbor lays a strong claim to being the most coveted and most exciting village on the East End. In terms of pure commerce and cachet, the place has finally caught up with Ted’s long-ago vision. Deep, dense bags of cash are being exchanged for tiny old village houses, and the Main Street storefronts are looking chicer by the day. The hotel’s competition at the very top end of the culinary heap is always shifting and expanding, particularly in both East Hampton and Bridgehampton. Sag Harbor’s own Baron’s Cove, once basically a motor inn, is being so radically renovated and reinvented that American Hotel mainstay and oenophile Jay McInerney is serving as a “curator” of the restaurant wine list, which has replaced the outdoor Coke machines and ice makers. How could the new joint’s selections not be at least slightly influenced by McInerney’s decades-long enjoyment of the Conklin cellar? A glowing tribute, but perhaps a slightly inconvenient one as well— competition as a sincere form of flattery. There were even swirling rumors—dismissed by Ted himself and now somewhat receded—that the hotel might be for sale. To Ralph Lauren, no less. To some large extent, Sag Harbor has met the hotel and become the town that the hotel itself imagined. Once an outpost, the American Hotel is now a venerable temple. It embodies and encapsulates a good deal of what sets Sag Harbor apart—for

Clockwise from top left: Ralph Lauren, often mentioned as a buyer for the Hotel, checks in with Billy Joel, while Ricky Lauren keeps things “just so.” Billy Joel, on Main Street outside the American Hotel. now. But can that balance last? Will success ruin the ecosystem? And if Sag Harbor as a whole has been remade in the hotel’s image, where does the boardinghouse now stand? Ted was in residence last October as Sag Harbor began to again feel like a village. I had crab cakes with my shawl-wrapped friend as a hearty-ish few of us slipped in what stood to be a last October evening out on the porch. It’s possible that a cigar was smoked in closerthan-strictly-approved distance from the hotel door. Jimmy Buffett strolled out of the barroom and chatted away with several diners on the porch. It was that absolutely priceless annual moment when the days and the waters of Long Island are still warm and when everyone with obligations back in the world has left to take care of them. From a distance, Ted seemed to be reveling in the evening. But I thought of the quiet and the coming chill when he later remembered what 1971 had looked like on Main Street. Bulova had abandoned its watch factory, and NASA budget cuts had brought Grumman’s work on the Apollo program to an abrupt end. “Basically overnight, 1,500

jobs vanished, and the population of the town plummeted to 2,000. There was a palpable tension between locals and the New Yorkers who began to trickle in to buy the old family houses.” Ted had a young family and was living upstairs from the freshly renovated barroom. Electricity had just been added to the building, but Conklin’s truck had to be sacrificed to pay the plumbing bill. The guiding vision had been for the hotel to be a great haven for one and all: artists, writers, haves, and have-nots. But bar fights were a symptom both of the town’s economic body blows and of the intermingling of different socioeconomic worlds. Four decades and much big success later, Conklin the raconteur makes it all sound quite the adventure. But it’s the real rawness of that time and place and the unlikeliness of the ultimate business win that seem to add an enduring spring to Ted’s step. He certainly earned it. By late January, the fireplace in the hotel’s barroom had become blessed relief from the cold winds coming off the harbor. Peconic Bay oysters from Pickerell’s farms and a spinach salad avec lardons did the evening’s trick

admirably. (Veteran bartender Vinnie Nom—an institution entirely in his own right—conjured dinner post-deadline.) Julie Keyes, local artist, operator, gal about town and sometimes Conklin associate/always Conklin friend, was cackling over Ted’s handling of her cantankerous septuagenarian beau, the accomplished Israeli sculptor Nathan Joseph. Nathan, who is well known for making his views quite, um . . . well known, is a fixture at the hotel’s bar. In honor of all the outspokenness, Ted had an exquisite little framed sign saying “NATHAN, PLEASE BE QUIET” made so that it might be placed gently in front of the artist anytime the conversation seemed to be getting too involved. “Ha! Can you believe it?!” roared Julie. For a certain kind of regular, it was the highest compliment imaginable.

Clockwise from top left: The late Larry Hagman, American Hotel fan, channeling J.R. Ewing. The addition of the Hotel’s atrium marked a coming-of-age for the revived establishment. Novelist Jay McInerney got an education in wine at the American Hotel. He’s taking some of that experience to a new competitor down the street.

Ted was in Palm Beach for the winter, but still present in spirit—both in the steady operation of the hotel, but also in minds of friends in Sag Harbor. Over at the Dockside Bar & Grill on Bay Street, co-owners Stacy Sheehan and Elizabeth Barnes volunteered lots of Ted Conklin tales, all of which fit squarely into either the “mentor” or “rascal” categories. Ted has always enjoyed their more casual establishment, and both women feel that he has been an invaluable supporter and advisor for their own considerable success just down the street from the hotel. Meanwhile, Stacy and Elizabeth, like so many others, marvel at his ability to consume lots of

Rotary Club would meet, and where you could have dinner in wintertime if you’d come out to check on your house.” Simple: All these years and so many Wine Spectator awards later, it was easy to miss the basic fact that Conklin had started very, very local in order to go “global.” The hotel had to be a simple saloon before it could also be Lutèce. “It was the paradigm of the great local clubhouse. I wanted it to be a clubhouse,” he told me. “A democratic—that’s small ‘d’— clubhouse for the town. That’s what those other places had been.” That is the spirit of the hotel: a civility deeply anchored in the

the best booze, stay up late, weigh in knowledgeably—or at least persuasively—on a great many subjects, and then to positively attack the following workday. All this while looking as though cared for by a valet and a Jermyn Street barber. It’s a recurring theme: No one can quite figure out how Ted runs. A former hotel employee added that Ted, who has a two handicap, doesn’t appear to do much more than casually tune up his golf game a couple of times a year. I heard things about “faster than a speeding bullet” and “leaping tall buildings in a single bound” but could not verify them. April finally came, and so did Ted. Back to Sag Harbor for a friend’s birthday at the hotel, and then on his way to Villa d’Este on Lake Como for Easter, a lovely lady on his arm. It all brought me back to my original curiosity about the hotel and about this hotelier’s vision. Had it been 21 that was the inspiration? The old Connaught? Ted set me straight. “It was the Patio in Westhampton,” he said. “Or the Ambassador Inn in East Quogue. They were the places where the

town and its residents. Anchored in civics, actually. It’s precious and has made for a lovely little town—at a drastically escalating price point. With Sag Harbor now so in demand, will the next wave of restaurateurs and entrepreneurs be willing or able to tend that flame? Will they want to? Julie Keyes and Nathan Joseph, who live about 80 yards from the hotel, lost power during Hurricane Sandy. But it wasn’t a problem. As the seriousness of the storm became more apparent, Ted put out the word for anyone who was in a jam to come to the hotel. The building was doing just fine on its generator, and he had rooms as well as a whole bunch of lobster “he said he needed to get rid of.” So people came and filled up the hotel for shelter and for company and to ride out the storm. There was ample booze and plates of lobster salad sandwiches on white bread. And as the storm raged outside, Ted Conklin rallied his huddled masses, and old standards and vaudeville songs were sung long into the night. ✦ JUNE 2015 • AVENUE ON THE BEACH | 103

he Prince of Wales is famous for his love of nature and organic farming, and in Bunny Guinness’s new book, Highgrove: An English Country Garden, His Royal Highness gives readers a glimpse into his treasured garden, which is the culmination of more than 30 years of work, dedication and passion. Each chapter explores the details and intricacies of this unique place and the changes and effects each month of the year has on them. Readers will gain insights into Highgrove and all the work, decisions and craftsmanship behind it. Below we give excerpts that describe three of the garden’s most beautiful features: the Carpet Garden, the Kitchen Garden, and the Thyme Walk.

Carpet Garden (opening spread)

“In the heat of the summer, a visit to the Carpet Garden is rather like stepping into an exotic, foreign location as you are greeted by bold hot colours, heady perfumes and gently trickling rills and fountains . . . This hidden, secret garden has been laid out according to a favourite Turkish carpet of Prince Charles’s. It has a traditional chahar-bagh, or four-fold design, and at the heart of the garden (or carpet) there is a raised fountain which sits in the centre of a Moroccan-inspired, scalloped, marble bowl . . . Chelsea show gardens are created to be dramatic and shine for six days, but this garden has been developed so that it now gives pleasure for many months of the year.”

Kitchen Garden (next spread)

“My enduring hope is that those who visit the garden may find something to inspire, excite, fascinate or soothe them.” Thyme Walk

“Apart from its rarity, the Highgrove Thyme Walk is even more exceptional because of its dramatic scale and the broad range of different varieties of thymes used. The fine, fragrant pathway runs west from the Terrace Garden towards the Dovecote for about 95 metres, and is composed of a mass of pillowy thymes, from the highly prostrate varieties to some that are more buxom and bushy. Although slightly scented all the year round, the cushions of pinks, purples, yellows, limes and greens are at their most aromatic from May to July, when they are in flower . . . Adding yet more weight and a similarly sculptured effect to this strong sight line are the pleached trees, which frame the outer edge of the garden. These ‘frames’ are made from double lines of hornbeam trees that now look sturdy and mature, structural yet elegant.”

“The Kitchen Garden is one of the most sensational and beautiful gardens at Highgrove in late May and June. Although it is predominantly a productive space there are many ornamental plants and structures within its walls too. The central herbaceous borders full of blues, pinks and purples and the ornamental planting that is intermingled with the fruit trees around the bases of the walls pull in beneficial insects and add to the ambience. The inclusion of flowers for decoration, the strong design and the organic nature are all contributory factors that make this one of the finest kitchen gardens in the country.”

aking a stroll along Main Street in East Hampton, one comes across a store that is not only pleasant to look at but incredibly useful as well, so much so that it’s surprising that something like this was not here before. Lullanest, a sophisticated and highly curated baby boutique, is the creation of Katerina Williams, a former lawyer turned entrepreneur. “I created a baby boutique because I wanted to share our outlook of how special it is to be starting a family, and I wanted to have a brand that reflects that,” she says. “I like being a part of people’s lives as they prepare for these little important world changers—it seems pretty special to me,” she adds. Katerina and her husband first landed in Sag Harbor in the summer of 2011, when they rented a house for the season. It didn’t take long for them to fall under the spell of the old whaling village, its quaint feel and the beauty of the nature around it with its rocky bay beaches

is bright and welcoming. The merchandise covers pretty much every aspect of what a parent could possibly want, all in one place. Lullanest stocks a myriad of baby and parenting essentials, including gear, clothing, room decor, toys, accessories and skin care products. True to its East Hampton clientele, all the brands are high-end, well-known and handpicked—Bugaboo, UPPAbaby, and Stokke, as well as Aden + Anais, to name but a few. This is a one-stop shop that takes away the chaos, indecision and anxiety of shopping for a baby, a feeling that is all too familiar to both new parents and those on their second or third child. But what sets Lullanest apart is that all the products are strictly for ages zero to two. Williams decided to limit the store to such a narrow age group with a specific reason in mind. “There are so many products out there, and you can go in so

reminding Katerina of growing up on Long Island’s North Shore. Shortly afterward, the couple purchased a house and made Sag Harbor their second home. “It is our place to recharge and to connect as a family,” Katerina tells me. “I always feel like I am on vacation when I am out here.” It seemed only natural that her next project besides starting a family was going to be in the place that she fell in love with: the East End. Lullanest takes up part of an old farmhouse right in the middle of town. The space itself

many directions that I don’t ever want it to become overwhelming, I want to maintain the boutique feel and the integrity of the merchandise,” she explains. Everything in the store is subject to rigorous research. By talking to other moms and trying the merchandise herself, Katerina makes sure that her customers are recommended products that fit their lifestyle. “I like the personal approach; it’s what I do with the store,” she says. Her favorite product of the moment is the BabyBjörn bouncer. “I love products like that,” she says. “They do what they are supposed to do and keep the baby happy and safe. It makes life easier and has a great design.” Lullanest, although only in its second year, is already playing a part in the local community. Besides being a pleasant and useful place to stop while browsing through town, Lullanest also offers interactive programming. Last summer they held a swaddling class and a baby CPR workshop. Upcoming events for this season will be posted on their website, lullanest.com, throughout the season. Also this July, Lullanest is supporting the Baby Buggy project, founded by Jessica Seinfeld, who is also a resident of East Hampton.

“I like being a part of people’s lives as they prepare for these little important world changers—it seems pretty special to me.”

While babies go through their “terrible twos,” Lullanest’s second year will be just the opposite. Already with a strong following of devotees it will continue to evolve and bring joy to the summer crowds and full time residents; to parents and to those looking for that perfect gift. And speaking of gifts, if heading to a baby shower this summer, Katerina recommends a set of adorable Stella McCartney onesies. ✦ JUNE 2015 • AVENUE ON THE BEACH | 113

THE EVOLVING LANDSCAPE Frederico Azevedo discusses his techniques, his inspirations, and the future of landscape design.

Frederico Azevedo

U

nlimited Earth Care office is nestled in the quiet tranquility of Bridgehampton, Long Island. With a ground-floor showroom that leads upstairs to an elegant round-tabled office, one gets the sense that a free exchange of ideas takes place here. It’s an atmosphere where the dreams of a customer can really come to life, all thanks to the creative prowess of the approachable owner himself, Frederico Azevedo. When Azevedo speaks about design, he doesn’t use words like “build,” but rather “extend,” so as to be particular about what he actually does. Sure he can mix exotica with native flora, but his true specialty is drawing the beauty from what is already there.

The most important current of his work is pinpointing the theme of the landscape, and through the repetition of colors, patterns, and textures, an immaculate sight is ultimately conceived. But sometimes he has to save homeowners from themselves: “One of the biggest challenges is educating clients to what will succeed in the Hamptons, because my clients are always looking to incorporate things that they’ve seen from their world travels.” In Azevedo’s eyes, the three primary landscapes of the Hamptons are woods, farms and beaches, and there are different methods for allowing each of these environments

to thrive. But more important, “The trick is not to know what looks good now, but what will look good five years from now. These environments are always evolving.” The landscape will always be defined by the soil, so over time a landscape will return to the natural state of the soil. While accolades are always a pleasant measure of success, Azevedo still makes a point of staying ahead of the curve. When he’s not traveling around the globe to discover international trends in landscape architecture, he’s socializing with contemporary artists in order to constantly hone his aesthetic judgment. Nevertheless, Azevedo can’t help but proclaim his shock

“The trick is not to know what looks good now, but what will look good five years from now. These environments are always evolving.” when, during the Blue Ribbon awards, he was given his prize by Martha Stewart, whose speech to a packed audience expounded upon his work in remarkable detail. He had no idea that the Martha Stewart knew his work. But then again, Azevedo has been garnering attention and picking up jet-setting clientele for many years now. The future of landscaping for Azevedo is sustainability, and he’s taking a cue from his native Brazil, where since the 1980s the country has been thinking about this subject intensely. The goal to use less water and expend less energy on landscapes has become a profound concern for homeowners and commercial spaces alike, with Azevedo at the forefront of this field. Often he suggests native species in order

to optimize soil, or maximizing the natural topography for the most efficient drainage patterns. One thing is for sure: We will be seeing many more incredible landscapes from Frederico Azevedo when we travel through the East End. ✦

esidential real estate information is key to buyers and sellers, and as we all know it is readily available through popular technologies. Serious home buyers and sellers, however, need not just information: they need information coupled with professional expertise and service. To be relevant and of good use, information must be fully evaluated, analyzed, qualified and quantified. Even the most advanced technologies have done little to dilute the essential service provided by a trusted and professional relationship with an experienced agent, whose work goes beyond information. An understanding of markets, values, negotiations, transaction requirements and a professional appreciation of the individual needs of clients and customers cannot be written into code. The fact that the public is more quickly informed and more knowledgeable than ever before raises the bar for all agents to provide increased levels of service. The real importance of the best new technologies is that they stimulate the most productive relationships with the licensed professionals whose counsel is an integral part of the complex process of home buying and selling. ✦

Investing in Your Health Trusting a financial advisor is a common practice, but many people overlook the importance of seeking their advice to plan for future healthcare needs.

W

ealth advisory firms, like Manhattan-based Hillview Capital Advisors, understand the benefit of recommending qualified health advisors to their clients, just as they would vet an attorney or accountant on behalf of a client. “Individuals require expert advice when making pivotal decisions in their lives,” said Danielle White, Vice President of Client Service at Hillview. “Choosing the right healthcare providers for you and your family is time consuming and challenging. We want our clients to be able to rely on a top-notch, objective, and independent health advisor so they can get the right care and focus their energy on providing loving support.” Since the enactment of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) of 2010, medical concierge services have become prevalent. The complexity the ACA added to America’s healthcare system gave rise to a host of alternative healthcare companies to cut through the red tape. Changes in reimbursement guidelines incentivized hospitals to reduce tests and encourage physicians to provide shorter appointment times at higher rates. All of this change makes it harder to discern whether a patient is receiving proper care from the best doctor, or specific care for their individual needs. According to Concierge Medicine Today, a publication dedicated to covering concierge medicine and direct primary care, the number of concierge physicians rose from 5,500 in 2013 to more than 12,000 in 2014. Couple these changes with the added wrinkle of an impending shortage of doctors, and the need for expert guidance increases. Baltimore-based PinnacleCare is an example of a health advisory firm recommended to clients by Hillview that provides access to their independently vetted database of physicians, medical institutions, and professionals. Firms like these tailor membership plans to customers’ specific requirements—whether managing healthcare for a family or facilitating care for an aging parent. The confusion that one experiences when they, or someone they love, receives a serious diagnosis can lead to making hasty, ill-informed decisions.

In such an instance, retaining the proper health advisory firm can be critical. Health advisory representatives accompany a client step-by-step through the healing process from evaluating the condition, explaining treatment options, and scheduling an appointment with a highly sought-after doctor. “We all worry about the day the phone rings and a close family member or friend has a healthcare emergency,” said Jonathan Hochberg, President of Hillview Capital Advisors. “Be it our parents or children, these firms have tailor-made solutions to understand, and manage, the complexities of the crisis by offering cutting edge approaches, appointments with limited access facilities, second opinions, and coordination with multiple specialty physicians.” In addition to facilitating the necessary treatments when a sudden problem arises, a health advisory firm can develop a plan for preventative medicine to manage ongoing, chronic health concerns as well as plan for healthcare needs that occur as patients age. In a 2014 study titled “Health and Retirement: Planning for the Great Unknown,” it concluded that for Americans, age 50 and older, impending costs of medical care in retirement are their biggest financial concern. Healthcare costs have historically risen at twice the rate of inflation, increasing by approximately 100% every decade and creating a heavy burden in later years. With a comprehensive health evaluation, preventative care, and financial planning, these costs can be managed without sacrificing lifestyle. “Health advisors are not just for people with a chronic illness or health scare,” said White. “They can help with the day-to-day decisions that keep you on the right track for the future.” ✦

uthenticity is still a relatively rare commodity, though it can be found in spades at Tutto il Giorno. A bastion of genuine Italian comfort food served up from within the confines of one of the coziest, most relaxing interiors around comprises the illustrious Tutto il Giorno. And with two locations in the Hamptons and one in Tribeca—plus another in the works—you’re never too far from the perfect spot to head with friends, family, or someone special.

A FAMILY AFFAIR The ultimate labor of love, the first Tutto location opened its doors eight years ago in Sag Harbor. The Tutto team, comprised of Gianpaolo de Felice and wife Gabby Karan—daughter of Donna— along with business partners David and Gally Mayer, Maurizio Marfoglia, and Larry and Maria Baum, worked together to conceive, design, source and implement every aspect of the now-storied first location in Sag Harbor. First derived from their love for authentic Italian, Gianpaolo says the original idea to open an authentic Italian eatery came from a bike ride with David Mayer after which they were craving the cooking of Gianpaolo’s Neopolitan mother. From there, the idea blossomed into wanting a space that the de Felice family could personally enjoy. “We wanted to create a great environment, mainly for ourselves and our friends,” he says, explaining the restaurant’s origins. “We wanted to bring a little slice of Italy to the Hamptons.” Gabby Karan de Felice bore the brunt of designing all three locales’ interiors, transforming the spaces into cozy sanctuaries reminiscent of Gianpaolo’s native Italy. Guests often note the luxe yet welcoming interior as a highlight. RAISE A GLASS “Tribeca is a culture of music, film, art and business,” Gabby explains of their most recent location’s new, innovative cocktail menu. “We wanted to cultivate a place inspired by these facets where people could go after work to have a drink and talk.” It was Silke and Savas Tsitiridis, friends of the de Felice family and now business partners, who first introduced them to the Tribeca locale that is now home to Tutto’s third location. With the addition of Tutto’s fresh cocktail selection, the restaurant takes on new life in the heart of the city. The seven-drink meny is inspired by southern Italy and the family’s boat trips on the Mediterranean. “We take the freshest ingredients and bring them for a day on the sea,” says Gianpaolo. “We eat, drink, and enjoy each other’s company, and the menu came from that experience.” The de Felice family considers the Bicicletta—a nod to the biking trip that started everything—their signature family drink. Featuring Aperol, white wine, and a splash of soda, Gabby calls the spirited libation a “taste of summer.” Also included on the menu are innovative takes on the classic Bellini as well as entirely unique creations including the Moschito, which features grappa, green grapes, lemon and mint. TO THE FUTURE As for what’s next for Tutto il Giorno, the de Felice family is open to possibilities. “We live on the Upper East Side, so it would be nice to have one in our neighborhood,” Gabby says, laughing. Cracking such a difficult market to begin with is no easy task, but managing to thrive and grow their business model in one of the world’s most challenging economies is a testament to the Tutto il Giorno product. When asked about the secret to their success, both Gabby and Gianpaolo agreed that it came down to passion and a love for what they do. “We just want to make good food for good people,” Gianpaolo said. “It’s really that simple. ✦

VieVité The Intersection of Rosé and Lifestyle

A

sk any rosé enthusiast for a wine that is just as cultured and chic as your lifestyle and they will say that you must experience VieVité. The enchanting shade of pink, striking bottle shape and luscious flavors make VieVité the perfect rosé for anyone looking to be seen with a glass of the quintessential summer drink.

As soon as temperatures rise, you’ll find rosé in high demand on leading wine lists and at top retailers all around the world. Over the past decade, rosé has acquired a cult following and the rise in demand is directly linked to improved quality in the category. The Provence region in Southern France, the birthplace and capital of rosé, has increased their focus on cultivating unique rosés, which has led to more complexity and diversity amongst brands, much to the pleasure of the rosé clique. But it’s not only the quality of rosé that matters anymore, it’s the opportunity to create an experience that fits your lifestyle, which is exactly what VieVité offers to those who crave the exceptional. Aside from its critical acclaim and succulent berry flavors that make it a unique expression of a dry, Provence rosé, VieVité has found its way onto some of the most prestigious wine lists in New York, Miami and Los Angeles because of its association with a cosmopolitan lifestyle. “A VieVité experience can transport you to the most exclusive lounges in Saint Tropez or to the front row of New York fashion week. It’s a drink that offers a lifestyle you desire,” explains Tunch Doker, President of Turquoise Life, the company responsible for VieVité’s trendsetting approach to rosé. And while VieVité’s biggest fans are running the world’s most innovative companies or jet setting to fabulous destinations, it’s no wonder that VieVité is a play on French words “live fast”. Doker explained, “It’s a wine lovers rosé that caters to a lifestyle. If you’re drinking VieVité, you appreciate premium quality wine and require a rosé that complements your style and can keep up with your taste.” As a wine that has struck the perfect balance between quality and lifestyle, VieVité is in a category all of its own . . . and it’s an experience you should demand for yourself. ✦

Hot Chicks Get Everything The best-kept secret in hair rolls out all-new Glambassador program

FOR MORE INFORMATION, CONTACT: GLAM & GO For memberships, appointments, and scheduling at any location, visit or call: www.glamandgo.com 1.844.GET.GLAM

What’s the story behind Glam and Go? Before Glam and Go, I worked as an on-camera host and was getting my hair done in 15 minutes—that was all the time we had to be camera-ready. When we wrapped the show, I had lost my green room privileges and found my hair to be a huge struggle. My day’s not right when my hair’s not right, and I wanted to do it all but I couldn’t find the time. As someone who believes it’s better to stay home than show up ugly, I realized my hair was holding me back. That’s when I had the idea for Glam and Go. I thought, what if I could access a quality hair experience where and when I needed it most, like at the gym, a residence tower, hotel or office building? Then I could make the most of my existing routine, have great hair—everyday, at that—and the time to do the things that matter to me. How does the whole express styling process work? The Glam and Go express style is our 15-minute styling session that starts on dry hair for a blowout finish in half the time. Our signature blowout is a full blowout, called the Wash + Blow. In some locations, we offer a You Shower, We Style. We have a menu of all the different express styles we offer, and clients can pick which one they want. Our express styles take 10 to 15 minutes, and with the right care they can last for a couple of days. Every stylist in the studio was handpicked and tested by me and trained by our artistic director Doug Di Canio as we wanted to have a consistent styling experience at all of our salons. Before a stylist gets the final stamp of approval, I have them do my hair so I can see firsthand that they can perfect recreate our menu styles every time. Tell us about Glam and Go’s new membership program. Our members are called Glambassadors, and the concept is simple: unlimited blowouts or express styles for one monthly price. Unlimited blowouts are $150 and it offers unlimited signature blowouts as well as express styles. Our express membership is $99 and it’s unlimited express styles. The program actually pays for itself after the third visit, but honestly no price even comes close to the feeling of confidence when you know you look great. The Glambassador memberships also come with a perks program, which we’re calling Hot Chicks Get Everything. It includes discounts on products and gym memberships, consultations, and a few other things we’re working on. It’s just a little something extra! What are the most popular styles on the menu? The gym inspired all of the style names, where I first got the idea for Glam and Go. For most of the winter and early spring, the most popular style was definitely the Hot Body, which is all about volume—not too curly, not too straight. Now for spring, it’s all about Serious Curves, which is really classic and sexy. Once summer is in full swing, our most popular look is definitely the Beach Body, which is really gorgeous, beach-y waves. I’m actually on my way to the salon now! ✦

or girls about town, time is always of the essence. Between careers, families, friends, events and every other social obligation in between, there can be a disparity between looking good and going out, and many women feel that they would rather stay in than leave the house looking less than polished. Erika Wasser was all-too familiar with that feeling until realizing—in a burst of inspiration inspired by her time spent in entertainment green rooms—that glamour didn’t have to be inconvenient. With the conception of Glam and Go, an express styling and blowout bar with nine locations between New York and Miami, Erika is giving women access to perfect, polished styles in a matter of minutes, making it ideal for events, après-gym, and even before work. Better yet—you can access it all for one monthly membership fee. Here, Erika shares her sleek style tips, the story behind what people are calling the “best kept secret in hair,” and why hot chicks get everything.

AN ENGLISHMAN IN AFRICA Niels van Rooyen fosters his creativity and stays in touch with his South African roots

HOLLAND & HOLLAND is an Upper East Side favorite for those seeking some English sensibility in New York. The man behind the brand, creative director Niels van Rooyen, counts on his annual pilgrimage to South Africa to help him keep delivering a fresh vision to the brand’s loyal fans.

Return to Africa . . .

I have been so lucky: I have traveled all over the world both personally and professionally, but despite the many wonderful and breathtaking places I have visited, my favorite is, and always will be, the savanna plains in Kruger National Park.

When on the savanna plains...

We always stay in field camps. I always travel with my best friend, who is a field guide and a conservationist—if there is anyone who can teach me anything about the wildlife of the African bush, it is him. We like to go on safari; my aim is always to try and see the big five. [The big five game are the African lion, African elephant, Cape buffalo, African leopard and rhinoceros.] I enjoy bird-watching, learning more about the flora and fauna, and just generally enjoy the peace and serenity of the bush.

The scene . . .

When I have stayed at lodges around the world, there is inevitably a New Yorker or two in the crowd, and they all know about Holland & Holland. Yes, there have been celebrities too . . . but true to Holland & Holland’s policy, discretion is important, and they will remain nameless. 156 | AVENUE ON THE BEACH • JUNE 2015

I can’t travel without . . .

Some years ago I received a kikoy from my friends in Kenya. It is a cotton wraparound, traditional worn by men on the Swahili coast of East Africa. Today, the kikoy has evolved as a woman’s wraparound as well. They are so soft, colorful and vibrant that you can use one as a beach wrap, a scarf, a shawl or even as a picnic cloth!

Favorite find . . . A hand-carved wooden mask from a visit to the Ndebele tribe; they are from a part of South Africa near Kruger National Park.

We’ll be seeing you . . .

Words to live by . . . My motto is to travel light.

Traveling is so educational, and a true inspiration to me. I always seek a story, and I inevitably find it in my travels. The big five and the flora and fauna of the bush are unescapably prominent in my clothing collections. A visit to Namibia stimulated my enthusiasm to use it as a destination for a photo shoot. A visit to India inspired the maharaja story of Spring/Summer 2014. A walk through the deer of Richmond Park in London led to a collection themed on the stag. ✦

PATRICIA HEARST SHAW GIVES A PARTY

Patricia Hearst Shaw Shaw, the charismatic granddaughter of media mogul William Randolph Hearst, on whom the Orson Welles movie Citizen Kane was based, gave a lunch at her home in Putnam County. The occasion was the christening of her savvy daughter Gillian’s second child, Hadley Chandler, by her husband attorney, Christian Simonds. Twenty-eight family members and friends attended Simonds the ceremony, at St. Philip’s Church in the Highlands. Standing as godmother was Patricia’s other daughter, the actress Lydia Hearst, who this year will be in five movies and a TV series called South Hell. “I play a drug-addicted ballerina,” smiled Lydia, who of Hell is currently in the arms of comedian Chris Hardwick. She confided to me, “I’ve never been happier in my life.” Lydia brought a ballerina dress dotted with stars from Paris by Jean Paul Gaultier for her sister’s other daughter, Harper, to wear to the party. It’s the only way really: after all she’s two! (Is there a tiny tot category for the best-dressed list? Well, why not?). Hadley wore a long white dress embroidered in sea pearls, while her mother, who will be among the junior cochairs of the New York Botanical Garden’s upcoming ball, was picture perfect in a floral Oscar de la Renta, while Patricia wore royal blue and pearls the size of jawbreakers. The stately home, awash in art, antiques and family memorabilia, was a virtual poem in pink blooms and pale green orchids. Among the guests were the ever-glamorous Kimberly Rockefeller, Rockefeller fine art consultant Tom Knapp and others too blue-blooded and private to mention. ✦

esigning the chicest of shoes for It-Girls turned Jessie Randall of Loeffler Randall into the ultimate It-Girl herself. With a penchant for creating feminine, whimsical, and oftentimes daring designs for the modern woman, Jessie has become New York’s go-to for envyinducing footwear. Though her high-powered career takes up much of her time, Jessie is entirely dedicated to another job she considers far more important—taking care of her three boys and husband, Brian. When warm weather rolls in, Jessie loves to pack up her family and head to the East End for a weekend of sun, surf, and quality time. Here, she reveals her design for the perfect summer, from cocktails to crafting.

WHAT’S YOUR RELATIONSHIP TO THE HAMPTONS? My husband and I have been going out there for years now. We’ve rented in the past, but now we have a place of our own out near the beach.

WHAT’S THE BEST PIECE OF ADVICE YOU’VE EVER RECEIVED? Be authentic to who you are. The things that make you different are the things that make you special. WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE THING TO DO IN THE HAMPTONS? Aside from playing with my children and going into town, one of my favorite things to do is to just stretch out in the grass and relax. I also like going to the beach, of course, and doing crafts, but it’s nice to just relax once in a while.

WHAT’S THE FIRST THING YOU DO WHEN YOU ARRIVE AT YOUR HAMPTON’S HOME? It’s normally nighttime when we get in, so we just try and get everything unpacked as soon as possible. Then we get the kids to bed right away so my husband and I can watch some Netflix together. Right now we’re obsessed with watching Portlandia. It’s just so funny, we can watch the episodes over and over again together. WHAT’S THE BEST THING YOU’VE EVER DESIGNED? Anything that I can look back on years later and still want to wear. That’s when I know I made something great.

WHAT’S YOUR SIGNATURE DRINK? Vodka gimlet on the rocks. I love the taste; it’s very light and summery.

of reggae music because we go to Jamaica pretty often. It’s just feel-good music. WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE WAY TO GET AROUND THE HAMPTONS? I like to walk, actually. We live pretty close to town, so it’s nice to just walk and be outside in the sun. WHO’S YOUR FAVORITE DINNER COMPANION. My kids. I especially love spending time with each of the three oneon-one, which doesn’t happen too often because we’re so busy. My twins are 8 years old and my littlest is 4 and a half. IF YOU WEREN’T A DESIGNER, WHAT WOULD YOU BE? I would be a craft blogger. I love to create, to make things with my hands, and to teach myself how to do new things.

WHAT’S ON YOUR SUMMER PLAYLIST? I actually like to listen to country music in the summer, so I play a lot of old Dolly Parton. Also, on our Spotify playlists, we play a lot

WHAT DO YOU WANT TO BE WHEN YOU GROW UP? A grandmother. I love babies and since I‘m done having my own . . .✦
