AVENUE | 40 TH ANNIVERSARY

JESSE FROHMAN

WHAT CAN YOU SAY about the 40th anniversary of a magazine as beloved as AVENUE? The founder, Judy Price referred to it as “a pictorial New Yorker” and in many ways that’s what it still is. It has always been a magazine where people see their friends looking their best and hear about their upcoming projects, activities and charities. But there is a more serious side to this magazine than just the glorious array of party pictures you see in our pages. Being in AVENUE is a reward and an honor. We seek to highlight the achievements, particularly the philanthropic ones, of the people we cover. We invite members of this rather small, but extremely powerful group of people, to tell their friends and the world about what they do. If we chose to tell their stories in a glossy, good-looking way, it’s because we want to draw others in and entice fellow philanthropists to follow in their footsteps. And if we are having fun, dancing, singing and laughing while helping others along the way, what could be better? Having spent many hours delving into our archives, I’ve been so impressed at the panoply of culture, society and sheer fun, I’ve found in these pages. Judy and Peter Price had a prescient ability to see a different New York was immerging after the disruptions of the 60’s and 70’s. AVENUE in those early years might have looked a little different from the way it does now (the doorknobs of yesteryear having been being replaced with great photographic portraits of people) but the DNA remains mostly intact. As homage to the visual feast of the last 40 years, we have painstakingly gone through the treasures of Mary Hilliard, Patrick McMullan and Billy Farrell to pick out our favorite AVENUE pictures of the 1980’s, 1990’s, 2000’s and 2010’s. We matched our favorite scribes to write about the decades they knew best with brilliant results. It’s a complete thrill to have their voices in the magazine again. One feature I’m particularly proud of is “AVENUE Moments” where we asked a group of former editors, photographers and writers to come up with a moment they felt encapsulated the extraordinary and zany world of AVENUE. Their responses were witty and often hilarious, but also poignant. Many expressed a desire to come back to work here. Finally, we have a conversation which explores a topic we are constantly addressing here at AVENUE: “What is Society Now?” In order to truly reflect on this question, I felt that champagne was required and that lunch needed to be served. So I gathered a group of good friends and mentors at my favorite restaurant in New York, The Monkey Bar, to ask them what their views were on this subject. Their candid and off-the-cuff answers are well worth reading. All in all, this issue has been a crazy ride but that’s what we love about AVENUE. It’s a constant adventure! Happy 40th Birthday, AVENUE!

^ OUR FEARLESS FOUNDERS Judy and Peter Price

1980s OF ALL THE PARTIES I attended in my AVENUE years— store opening parties, new perfume line parties, parties for dogs and cats, fancy dinner parties hosted by people whose names I never knew—one of the few I remember was the first. It was a cocktail party at the Museum of Modern Art hosted by the publisher of AVENUE and presided over by the magazine’s first editor in chief, the droll and soigné David Breul, who held his cigarettes at an angle and practiced the art of saying almost nothing at all. The year was 1979. As a 24-year-old junior writer for Time, I was hugely envious. Not only was David, at 32, the editor of a sleek monthly magazine in Manhattan—the editor!—but he stood surrounded by extremely attractive women. I had freelanced an article or two for him, and though pay was appalling—$200—I liked appearing in the magazine’s impossibly glossy pages. I like being at the party, too. AVENUE in the first incarnation was a bit different from the magazine you hold now. Its owner and publisher, an effusive and somewhat theatrical woman in oversized glasses who introduced herself to me at the party as Juuuuudy, had started it five years before with a vision. AVENUE, she declared breathily, was a pictorial New Yorker. It was a crashing oxymoron—in that long-ago, pre–Tina Brown time, The New Yorker had no pictures, and anyway, how could one compare pictures of any king to The New Yorker’s peerless prose. Yet David Breul had done a remarkable job of realizing that vision in his own way. The articles were nearly all profiles accompanied by full-page, black-and-white portraits taken by some of

the city’s top photographers. Judy Price deserved a lot of credit for this monthly portrait gallery, too. She’d realized that a lot of top photographers had time on their hands, and that fulsome flattery, perhaps bestowed over a handsome, tax-deductible lunch at Le Cirque, did much to soften the sting of what she paid them for their work. Besides, the subjects were interesting: CEOs, society dames, art patrons and aging stars, old rich and nouveau riche, all the notables of the Upper East Side world Judy called AVENUEland. Some months later, I picked up the phone in my cubicle at Time and heard a memorably breathy voice say, “Michael? Juuuuuudy. Can you ^ NOW THATS A DRESS! meet me downstairs for coffee?” Judy had worked as a reporter-researcher for Time—it was where she’d met her future husband, a well-heeled and debonair business-side guy at Life named Peter Price— and had aspired to be a writer herself, lying in wait outside the men’s room for managing editor Henry Grunwald so she could pepper him with story ideas when he emerged. She started AVENUE instead, but retained a fascination with Time writers, and often corralled them into writing for her. As I sat down with her at a basement coffee shop in the Time-Life

building, I girded myself for more flattery in return for the next $200 story. But I was so wrong. “How would you like to be the editor of AVENUE?” Judy asked, batting her eyes behind those big glasses. David Breul, it seemed, had tired of the job and was about to leave, never to be heard of again. Judy had called one of her favorite Time writers, Michael Demarest, and asked him if he could recommend a young colleague as her new editor. Demarest had just taken me to lunch at a little French restaurant in the West 40s, and declared, as I woozily picked up the tab, that I was a fine fellow. (Sadly, Demarest died of a heart attack not long after.) Remembering me from the MoMA party as polite and not unattractive, Judy offered me the job.

I acquired a staff of about three, in a tiny warren of the blacklacquer-painted offices at 30 East 60th Street. (The black lacquer was Judy’s idea.) I have no idea how I put a first issue together, but I do still have a copy, dated September 1980. Let’s see: a profile of Walter Hoving, the patriarch of Tiffany’s who’d just published Tiffany’s Table Manners for Teenagers; a profile of jazz pianist George Shearing, a staple at that time of the Café Carlyle; and a triptych profile of restaurateurs Sirio Maccioni (Le Cirque), Paul Kovi and Tom Margittai (The Four Seasons), and Jean-Jacques Rachou (La Côte Basque). That issue also included a spread of grainy old photographs of Sutton Place, with wonderfully authoritative text by the incomparable Christopher Gray, whose architectural history column had been well established on David Breul’s watch, and was then—as it remained for more than 25 years—most readers’ favorite feature. We got a lot wrong in our choice of profiles, given that Judy granted me complete editorial freedom and I was a novice in this strange new world, but occasionally we hit it right. Our books editor, Gary Fisketjon—moonlighting from his job as a rising editor at Knopf—put us on to his friend Jay

McInerney, whose debut novel Gary had just edited. The day that our story on Jay came out—the first story on the about-to-be published Bright Lights Big City—he came over to get a copy, tickled by the brand-new kick of media attention. We were the first, too, to take note of the red-hot new Surf Club, magnet to the uptown pearls-and-angora set. Thanks to the hard driving of Judy and her sales staff, AVENUE grew rapidly in the five years I was there. Our staff grew from 3 to something more than 30. For me, though, the real gratification of AVENUE wasn’t its business success, or the parties, which soon grew tiresome, but the fun of cultivating talented writers and photographers. Our best business writer was a brooding fellow named Bill Shepherd, who agonized over his prose to such an extent that Judy, on at least

Both Kurt Andersen and Graydon Carter—soon to cofound Spy together before going on to edit, respectively, New York and Vanity Fair—wrote stories for us. So did Bruce Feirstein, who’d contributed to The Official Preppy Handbook and went on to cowrite James Bond movies. For no good reason, I sent Bruce, a very funny, neurotic New York Jew. to cover a foxhunt in Greenwich, Connecticut. He came back utterly baffled, but wrote a hilarious piece. After five years it was time to leave—more than time, perhaps. Business was the big story, and a new magazine, Manhattan, Inc., had made business sexy: It was time for a new editor at AVENUE to recast the magazine to meet that challenge. Besides, I was burned out. But if I left exhausted, I left gratified by the chance I’d had to observe New York’s wealthy and fabulous up close in the early 1980s—before AIDS, before the fall of Michael Milken, before the Christian Right and the culture wars and the polarization of America, when fabulousness seemed to carry no cost at all.

1990s THE NINETIES BEGAN with a backlash against Society, or, at least, what John Fairchild’s WWD dubbed the Nouvelle Society of the Reagan boom years just ended. After the stock market crash of late 1987, and the recession that followed, the Nouvelle types who’d flaunted their fabulous lives, clothes and wealth for a giddy decade ducked, went to ground or disappeared altogether. In 1993, the Costume Institute’s Party of the Year at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, chaired by Eighties ingénue Blaine Trump, who’d just replaced her social mentor, Pat Buckley, in that influential eleemosynary slot, fell flat. It was a sign of changing times. Two years later, the modern age of society, or rather a commercialized simulacrum thereof, was christened when Anna Wintour took over that fête, bringing in a new breed of cochair, a younger, more photogenic generation of society girls (Clarissa Bronfman, Julia Koch), but more crucially, the stars of the newly ascendant infotainment society, the thespians, musicians, artists, agents and dealers who’d long dominated what was called the counterculture, but now represented the red hot center of . . . well . . . everything. Or at least everything that mattered to the fashion and luxury industries, also ascendant, after they’d morphed from cottage businesses into international conglomerates with unprecedented commercial power and an unquenchable thirst for social synergies and the omnipresence that accompanies them. Until then, it had seemed perfectly normal for men and women in their forties to still be called Juniors. Suddenly, the senior set seemed to wither and shrink, as an upstart ascendancy kicked into high gear. The perennial Brooke Astor and Mercedes Bass still kept

a tenuous hold on the top slots in the city’s social hierarchy. But AVENUE saw the future and in years to come spilled far more ink on the likes of Rena Sindi; the beautiful Miller, Fanjul and Boardman sisters; the wilder likes of the Ronson brood; and Aerin Lauder, Brooke de O’Campo and Marina Rust than on those ancien régime types who hung on in their brooding Park Avenue fortresses while the new royals of rap and real estate sought shelter in a new breed of look-at-me glass towers in chic new neighborhoods. In fashion, Vera Wang was giving Arnold Scaasi a run for the big money/statement dress business. In media, Tina Brown

was shaking the dust from The New Yorker. On television, Darren Star’s take on Sex and the City was about to make Candace Bushnell the new generation’s Jackie Collins. The times, they were a-changin’ again. By 1999, the coup d’état was complete, and not even the deaths of American princeling John F. Kennedy Jr., his beautiful bride Carolyn Bessette, and the dot.com economy could stop the relentless force of the future. It was battered, perhaps, but it was here to stay. And in the new century that followed, nouvelle society would seem as much dusty, old memories as the 400 folks who’d filled Caroline Schermerhorn Astor’s ballroom more than a century before them.

2000s THE 2000S HERALDED the surge of the socialite as bona fide celebrity. My then sister-in-law Tinsley Mortimer ruled the roost for most of the decade, smiling perfectly on magazine covers and having her signature arm on hip–legs crossed red carpet pose copied by younger upstarts like Olivia Palermo, who was first christened an “It Girl” by moi in the pages of AVENUE. Tinsley toiled tirelessly at being a savvy socialite: hawking her handbag line for Samantha Thavasa, being seen at the right benefits (New Yorkers for Children, Save Venice, etc.) and playing nice with the press. Her pack of pretties included Fabiola Beracasa, Zani Gugelmann, Olivia Chantecaille, Amanda Hearst, Byrdie Bell and a wildcard or two like Genevieve Jones, who arrived in New York from the south with a mysterious past to become a fashion designer darling overnight. A socialite’s worth was calculated by their picture count on society photographer Patrick McMullan’s site. It was an unspoken rule that if Patrick didn’t photograph you at a party, it was like you weren’t even there. And party hard was the name of the game: store openings (not yet seen as so taboo) to black tie benefits to late nights at Amy Sacco’s Bungalow 8 were the norm at least five days a week—a solid work week for any socialite worth her J. Mendel fur.

Unlike society leaders like the discreet Amanda Burden or decorator Celerie Kemble, the new crew was determined to be seen as much as possible. All press was good press for these girls. Then the party came crashing down. The launch of an anonymous website called Socialite Rank, which ranked social girls as if they were basketball players, turned the pretty girls ugly fast. And due to my close association with Tinsley, I was accused of being behind the site by everyone from the New York Post to the New York Observer to Radar Online, which all treated the snarky site as if it were actual celebrity news. My friend, writer Derek Blasberg, was also thought to be Mr. Socialite Rank, and Lauren Santo Domingo, a regular on the site, was so outraged that she allegedly hired a private investigator to hack away and uncover the culprits. But it was me who finally ousted the duo behind SR: Russians Valentine and Olga Rei in my

AVENUE article not so subtly titled “The Talented Mr. and Mrs. Rei.” The Reis later ignored my emails (sniff) and granted an exclusive interview to New York magazine, which mainly focused on a reported feud between Tinsley and Olivia Palermo that read like an All About Eve set at the Boom Boom Room. Then, like a Wall Street crash, Socialite Rank went belly-up and busted up the party. Tinsley did one season of a reality show for the CW called High Society, Olivia Palermo became an international style star, and the rest of the girls had babies. Society spins in cycles, and soon there were new girls hungry to grab the throne. My first cover when I was editor of AVENUE was Hannah Bronfman, whom I dubbed the next It Girl under the headline “YOUTHQUAKE.” Now Hannah boasts a gazillion Instagram followers (the new currency of social prominence and fame) and starred in Banana Republic ads. So stay tuned to the pages of AVENUE—we know how to pick ’em. —Peter Davis, Former editor-in-chief of AVENUE 56 | AVENUE MAGAZINE • 40th Anniversary 2015

2010s THE 2010S ARE about quality over quantity, and the rise of a more discerning type of social leader. There is no need to be in a million Patrick McMullan photos when you can hop into a few frames at the best of events (and then filter it 14 times over, regram it and share it to Facebook). The social stars of the 2010s curate their own fabulous brands with up-close Instagram shots of their penne a la vodka from Carbone and their Sunday afternoon sails to Shelter Island. In post-2010, every family is a brand, and its children are the ambassadors. Gone are the days where an overprivileged childhood foreshadows an adulthood of rehab stints and professional partying. The younger generations of well-to-do families know better than to rest on their laurels. They use their heritage and connections to accelerate the creation of their own clout. Hannah Bronfman is a DJ–cum– health guru, Aerin Lauder a lifestyle superstar. The list goes on. Everyone applauds their abilities to create and innovate, to carry the torch of their family legacies in a way that makes spectators happy and comfortable. Nobody wants to see a kid who grew up in the public eye spiral downward; if for no other reason, it makes them feel old. In the 2010s, women have it all. The new breed of “boss” has a career, runs philanthropic initiatives, manages her personal social media brand and growing family. She wakes up at 5:30 a.m. to get to a Barry’s Bootcamp or SLT class; she shops at the

The rise of the “mega-marriage” is also increasingly common as power players scan the summits for their partners. Nicky Hilton and James Rothschild; Lauren Bush and David MINNIE COSTUME Lauren; Ivanka Trump and Jared Minnie Mortimer Kushner; and Alejandro Santo Domingo and Lady Charlotte Wellesley are prime examples of this new breed. Not only do these pairings yield mega (mega-mega) wealth, they also churn out the ultimate power couples whom we get to see having breakfast in their pj’s on Instagram! It’s like we know them! It’s like we’re there! Thanks to social media, we can feel like we are right inside the social apex. And as counterculture becomes more mainstream, the pool widens. Race/sexual orientation blindness is the expectation (case in point, if you get to see Hamilton in the next year or two). We are still waiting for a transsexual society superstar. It will happen. And age? Just a number. Ask

quality is paramount

Paramount Custom Homes provides a hands-on approach to ensure the highest possible quality. Joe Criscuolo and Bill Locantro put a remarkable amount of passion and thought into each home they build. With a portfolio of hundreds of homes built across Long Island, these guys not only know the construction business, they eat, sleep and breathe it. What makes a Paramount home different from others? We build a very high quality custom home and are involved with every detail of the construction. We’re on every job site making sure our plans are being followed to our strict specifications. Our crews are not ordinary sub-contractors, they are top craftsmen in their field and take great pride in performing to our high standards. Anything less than perfection is not acceptable and that is the expectation on each home we build. Why consider Paramount? As a buyer, you know exactly what you are getting from Paramount; down to every nail and stud. Our homes are engineered, not just built, so you are getting the pinnacle of quality. When you choose Paramount you receive our attention to detail and our consistent communication at every step of the building process. If you are considering building a new home or remodeling an existing one, we go beyond meeting building codes and will exceed your expectations. We appreciate the opportunity to help you achieve your objectives.

A Trip Down

Memory AVENUE AVENUE editors often remark that a story is not especially worth telling unless there’s an interesting person behind it, and the same can be said for the work off the page. The people who worked on this magazine for the past 40 years have been responsible for every thoughtful feature, gorgeous photograph, and quippy caption over our collective history. Here, the editors of today ask our AVENUE alumni about the happiest, strangest, funniest and most surreal moments of their time at the magazine.

JUDY PRICE, AVENUE founder and President of the National Jewelry Institute More than 26,000 magazines might not seem like too many until stacks and stacks of them are completely dominating your Park Avenue apartment. It was back when the magazine first started. We didn’t have our warehouse set up yet, so I just told the printer that they could bring all 26,000 copies to my home. Entire rooms were completely filled up with the magazine, but my main concern was with how they were delivered. Magazines came in through the servants’ entrance, but I needed to make sure AVENUE was properly seen. I started to think about what we could do to ensure that the magazine came in through the front door, where everyone could see it. I got the idea to rent a limousine service so building doormen would rush out to help whatever VIP was surely inside. I went down to Alexander’s and commissioned these elaborate AVENUE delivery uniforms designed to look like those at The Browning School—we even had the word “AVENUE” embroidered on the lapels. Sure enough, the doormen at these top luxury buildings would rush out to open the door and it would be our magazine, ready to be delivered! Then people started to spread, “Oh, AVENUE is the magazine that’s delivered via Rolls-Royce!” but actually, we used a Cadillac. 40th Anniversary 2015 • AVENUE MAGAZINE | 85

MARY HILLIARD, Photographer A happy AVENUE memory took place 25 years ago when I attended the wedding of Anna and Bo Polk. She wore a beautiful satin dress designed especially for her by Ralph Lauren himself, but was an hour late for the service because she all forgot to allow time to button the tiny satin buttons and loops up the back of the dress. As he was 60 and she barely 20, many of their friends wondered if the union would last. But two handsome children and 25 years later, they are still married—and in love!

JANET ALLON, Former AVENUE Editor-in-Chief, current contributor

JESSE FROHMAN

I had a lot of memorable times, interviews and borderline insane photo shoots in my various editorial capacities at AVENUE magazine. My recent tour of the brandnew Whitney Museum with Brooke Garber Neidich, just a month or so before its grand opening, was a real behind-the-scenes treat. One cover story that stands out in my mind was the one featuring the model Carmen Dell’Orefice in December 2009. The woman most people simply know as Carmen was still a working model then at age 78 (and in fact is still today at 84), and being the world’s oldest supermodel she was striking a blow for aging women everywhere, which would have been enough to make her a fine and pithy inspirational cover story. But there was a lot more to Carmen than that. A year earlier, the swindler Bernie Madoff had finally confessed to stealing millions from individuals and charities, and as it happened, Carmen had been one of his victims, having even socialized with the Madoffs with then boyfriend Norman F. Levy. She was angry and dished deliciously about the Madoffs, and their lavish but rather tasteless lifestyle. “You couldn’t give me their house in Palm Beach or Cap d’Antibes,” she said at one point. “Life is more about taste than money.” Writer Jeff Podolsky wrote a great story about Carmen, amply helped by her frank wit, and willingness to tell it like it is. “He got caught because he wasn’t as smart as some of the bigger players in the world who knew how to get out,” she said at one point. Her rags to comfort—if not riches—life story is one for the, er, ages.

PATRICK MCMULLAN, Social photographer In the late 1980s, AVENUE decided they were doing a story on the social photographers, which included Mary Hilliard, Eric Weiss and me. We had to pick a celebrity that we liked; Mary had Bill Blass and I picked Joan Rivers. Jesse Frohman took our picture and it was such fun to be on the other side of the camera. Joan was having a lull in her career but she came and was extremely fun. I like to think it helped jump start her comeback and we continued to become great friends for years to come. Jesse gave me a print and I cherish it. When it came out in the magazine, it looked so great!

MATTHEW J.X. MALADY, AVENUE executive editor 2004-2008, Contributing writer at Slate, The New Yorker In all honesty, what I remember and cherish most about working at AVENUE are all the supremely kind people who treated me so well while I was there. I recall with great clarity and fondness, for instance, pulling together the 30th anniversary issue of the magazine. There were some late nights, and more photo clearance work than I had previously thought possible, but that experience really helped to crystalize for me the special history that AVENUE has developed over the years. Sorting through all the wonderful photography, and scanning broad smile after broad smile, it really became clear that this publication I was working on was all about joy, and the celebration of life, and good times shared by great friends. I feel genuinely honored and humbled to have been even a tiny part of the magazine’s legacy, and my time at AVENUE is something that I will always hold dear.

KEN SHUNG, Portrait photographer For a period, I was doing quite a bit of portraits and party photography for AVENUE, and there was never a dull moment. At the Christmas party in 1993, I was going around taking photos when I came across Judy Price smoking this massive cigar and casually reapplying her lipstick. All of a sudden, she grabbed Duane Michals and smacked a kiss right on his bald head, leaving a bright lipstick print! Another one of my favorite moments was when I photographed mogul Russell Simmons. He was totally snuggling up to the AVENUE intern and I was shooting every second of it! Toward the end of the shoot, I got out my Polaroid camera and told him to do something funny, so he grabbed his crotch. Obviously we couldn’t print those photos, but they’re an excellent personal keepsake!

ENTERTAINING ISSUE

AT HOME WITH JUDITH GIULIANI

JILL BROOKE, AVENUE Editor-in-Chief 2000-2003, Author of “The Need To Say No” and host of “Recipes To Heal When Your Ex Makes You Sick” I have so many fond memories of AVENUE. I had done a survey on who was considered one of the best hostesses, and guess who won? Joan Rivers. I got a lot of heat for including her because she was known as a clever, caustic comedienne who some thought was crass. But when it came to entertaining, her attention to detail dazzled, and her delight in gilded table settings and gathering interesting people for engaging dinnertime conversations made her dinner parties a coveted invite. It was a secret side of her and she was so grateful for being acknowledged for it.

I was living on the Upper East Side, and I admired the magazine so much because I just found it really, really smart. You didn’t see any other publications doing what AVENUE was doing at the time. I was just a baby writer, but the editor sent me on assignment out to Connecticut to cover this big foxhunt with Harry Benson, which was both incredible and terrifying. Here was the man who had shot the Beatles when they first arrived in America, and the two of us were driving to a foxhunt in Connecticut! The event happened on the most gorgeous early October day. I remember sitting there drinking champagne with Harry Benson and just thinking to myself, “This is as good as life gets.” The story itself owed everything to Michael Shnayerson’s editing. He put in the phrase “postprandial” and I remember thinking that I didn’t even know what that meant, but I knew it sounded elegant.

KEITH MAJOR, Photographer My moment is such a happy one, and it’s fairly recent, too. I was shooting Iris Apfel for the cover. She’s such an icon, and I admired everything about her. At the shoot, we were talking and she mentioned that she had seen some of my work, and she thought it was great. You know that scene in Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer where he takes off flying and yelling, “She thinks I’m cute! She thinks I’m cute!” after the girl kisses him? That was me for the rest of the day—maybe the rest of the month!—because Iris Apfel said she liked my work.

JUDITH NEWMAN, AVENUE contributing writer, Author of upcoming book “To Siri With Love” and contributor to The New York Times Maybe it was a special time in society history, or maybe it was that then editor Susan Mulcahy didn’t have money for focus groups. All I know is that in the late 1980s, AVENUE let me write some of the oddest stories I’ve ever done. One thousands words on a line of clothing for the fashionably dead; an investigative piece on people who enjoyed destroying modern art; a gauzy look at socialites who were nudists at home . . . they all found their way into the pages of this magazine. But most memorable was a piece on a more conventional subject: the writer’s colony, Yaddo. Like everyone else who spent ten minutes at Yaddo, I became overwhelmed with the erotic possibilities of the place. Take a bunch of writers, musicians and artists with no distractions other than themselves, add the unoccupied room where Phillip Roth wrote The Breast, and you too might end up having sex with a stranger whose musical compositions you found stupefying dull and pretentious. But never mind: He was at Yaddo. And I got to pretend I was Hunter S. Thompson for a day. 90 | AVENUE MAGAZINE • 40th Anniversary 2015

GEORGE GURLEY, AVENUE assistant editor 1992-1993, Author of “George & Hilly: Anatomy of a Relationship” and contributor to Vanity Fair and The New York Times I moved back to New York in 1991 and got a job with AVENUE—it didn’t hurt that my mother knew Judy. It was such a great job, and all I had to do was go out every night. Andy Port, the then editor, even told me, “One of your jobs is to go to all of the best parties,” but I was 23 and thought I should be at Harper’s or something and had an attitude. It was so glamorous—one day I would be talking to models on a shoot, then heading out to a black tie event in Lincoln Center to do interviews. Even so, I made a couple of big mistakes. There was a fashion shoot and it was my job to bring back a bunch of jewelry— about $400,000 worth. For whatever reason, my key to the office wouldn’t work and so I just left the bag of jewels on the floor and left them unattended for like an hour. Somehow, I got caught and was put on probation, but nothing really happened. It was such a perfect, ideal job. I didn’t appreciate it.

MARA SEIGLER, AVENUE assistant editor 2012, Page Six Senior Reporter My favorite moment at AVENUE was writing a story on Hunt Slonem’s West Side studio. He took me and photographer Sophie Elgort around his huge, otherworldly studio filled with a ton of plants and live birds, pointing out his collection of all these amazing 18th- and 19thcentury antiques. So you’re in this space that feels completely outside New York, hearing about these pieces and his bunny and butterfly paintings and listening to him talk about how his work with a psychic helped him with his Lincoln paintings, and then he ended up briefly painting for us with an Amazonian parrot sitting on his shoulder and singing. It was surreal and amazing. ✦ 92 | AVENUE MAGAZINE • 40th Anniversary 2015

Now?

After four decades of covering the social vanguard in New York, it’s pretty clear things have changed. We convened a panel of experts to help us define how.

O

ur crack team of social artbiters were Bob Colacello—an extraordinary writer who has lived through—and written about—New York’s many social transformations; Amy Fine Collins—another brilliant writer whose main focus is on fashion and style, Prince Dimitri of Yugoslavia—a European and one of the finest jewelers living in New York; Peter Davis— a social media trailblazer and Jack Bryan, voice of the millennial generation. With the kind permission of Vanity Fair Editor-in-Chief Graydon Carter, we convened our council at the Monkey Bar, as we felt the delicious food and elegant ambiance would make everyone relaxed enough to be indiscreet. It worked. Read on.

PARTICIPANTS JACK BRYAN, Filmmaker and entrepreneur BOB COLACELLO, Special correspondent of Vanity Fair, author of Holy Terror: Andy Warhol Close Up and Ronnie and Nancy: Their Path to the White House—1911 to 1980 (second volume in progress) AMY FINE COLLINS, Special correspondent of Vanity Fair PRINCE DIMITRI OF YUGOSLAVIA, Founder, president and creative director of jewelry firm, Prince Dimitri Company DAISY PRINCE, Editor of AVENUE PETER DAVIS, Writer and editor

AVENUE | 40 TH ANNIVERSARY DAISY PRINCE: Welcome to the first ever AVENUE lunch to decide “What is society now?” I was joking to Dimitri that I’ve assembled the Council of Nicea. Here’s how it came about: In the past, it was so clear to me who the social leaders were because they were constantly in the pages of AVENUE. The leaders of the ’80s we can easily identify: Nan Kempner, Blaine Trump, Nina Griscom, Pat Buckley . . . They were constantly in Mary Hilliard’s photos. In the ’90s, it was Emilia and Lourdes Fanjul, Fernanda Niven, the Boardman girls— BOB COLACELLO: I think society has become a lot more about money. DAISY: That’s an interesting jumping-off point. How so?

taking in the Lauders. Cities like Philadelphia, Boston, San Francisco, they’ve always looked down their noses on new money, and that’s why they’re not doing as well. San Francisco, finally, has been overwhelmed by this new high-tech/young money, and there aren’t many of the old-timers left. But Catholics have been part of society for a long time. I mean, they started going to Southampton because they couldn’t get into Newport. AMY: Neither could the Jews, but then again many of the founding families of New Amsterdam— BOB: But there are the German Jewish families and—

AMY FINE COLLINS: There were so many distinctions because you have the robber barons and then you have the old New York families.

AMY: Well, they were separate from the WASPs. Some of the early Dutch settlers in New Amsterdam such as the Verplanck family, were Jewish. I believe the Belmonts came a little later and were also Jewish. These early families often eventually assimilated or converted and they integrated with the WASP establishment. I don’t even think it was until maybe almost the ’70s and ’80s that everyone and everything loosened up a little.

BOB: New York is different from every other city in that the old money always accepted the new money to the point of say, the Rockefellers

BOB: What about the Lehmans and the Loebs, those families? Weren’t they already well placed in the 1920s?

BOB: I mean, what is society? Is it the ruling clique? Which, in America for a long time, were wealthy WASPs. That was society, really. But it started opening up after the wars especially.

100 | AVENUE MAGAZINE • 40th Anniversary 2015

AMY: Did you see them in the Social Register? No. It was still separate. I mean it depends on who, what and where. Palm Beach still separates. BOB: It’s kind of silly because they mix everywhere but the clubs. You go to dinner parties in Palm Beach and it’s probably half Jewish and half Christian. AMY: It is, and I think the reason why Palm Beach is still like that is because it’s not New York. Palm Beach is full of people from every part of the country. BOB: They say that 75 percent of capital wealth of America is in Palm Beach during the month of February. That’s how concentrated it is. DAISY: The history is so interesting, but the question I have is: what is society now? Does it, in fact, still exist? Is it relevant? Who are the social leaders now, and who will they be in the next 40 years. How is social media changing it? AMY: Every generation thinks society is dead, something has changed, unrecognizable. DAISY: Just like they think they invented sex? AMY: Yeah! Marcel Proust thought that

AVENUE | 40 TH ANNIVERSARY society was dead, Cleveland Amory wrote Who Killed Society? It’s because it has become unrecognizable and changed over the years. BOB: It became more international. AMY: With the jet set, definitely, it did. America is also different. There were never titles. BOB: Americans love titles. PRINCE DIMITRI OF YUGOSLAVIA: Thank God. BOB: Exactly! They want to marry titles. DAISY: [Gives Bob, who was a few minutes late, a list] This is a list of the It-Girls we saw in “On the Avenue” through the years. BOB: I love that Deeda Blair is an It-Girl. I think she’s great. The younger generation all flock around her now.

Andy Warhol and get helicoptered to Mount Olympus in one fell swoop. I’m an observer of society. Today, there is such a thing called media society, the media has become so powerful since Watergate that people like Nora Ephron and Barbara Walters have become the equivalent of the Pat Buckleys and the Brooke Astors in terms of being great hostesses. And someone like Louise Grunwald has established herself as this person who crosses over from society to media. In the ’70s, another change was fashion designers, who were called dressmakers, started being invited to dinner by the ladies they dressed. Suddenly in the ’70s, Oscar de la Renta, Bill Blass, Halston, Yves Saint Laurent, Valentino, and Givenchy began to attend more lavish and beautiful parties than the ladies they were dressing. AMY: Givenchy would be the only one that would have been invited in the previous decade.

“Rich people used to follow the horses and the couture, now they follow the art fairs and the auctions.” —BOB COLACELLO AMY: The ladies all used to be very involved in philanthropy. And now, philanthropy and being a hostess is less important and it’s more important to be photographed. BOB: Nan Kempner was an It-Girl in the 1960s, not the 1980s. [Scanning the list in his hands] AMY: But Nan Kempner could not have been an It-Girl in the 1950s.

BOB: Because of his aristocratic connections. AMY: I remember hearing people in Paris were shocked because Jacques Fath and his wife were invited to a dinner party. BOB: Even artists were rarely included.

charity balls, like the . . . what’s it called? AMY: The April in Paris ball. BOB: April in Paris ball, exactly. I think now we have this new high-tech Silicon Valley society. AMY: People certainly suck up to them, and want to emulate them. BOB: And get the right checks to the right charities. I think philanthropy is still a big part of society. DAISY: Yes. DIMITRI: Of American society, yes. AMY: But for the girls who really want to be the It-Girls now, philanthropy is not as much of a drive as it was. BOB: What is now, though? Art. Getting on museum boards. Rich people used to follow the horses and couture, now they follow the art fairs and the auctions. They plan their travel schedules around those. May and November are becoming the really big social months—they always were to a degree—and it’s because that’s when the auctions are. DAISY: Even if you don’t buy art? BOB: Not only are the major auction houses having dinners, all the galleries are doing very posh things. I think today more and more people who make money think becoming an art collector is the thing to do, and then you have all these socialites or so-called socialites who used to make candles now calling themselves art advisors!

DAISY: In NYC specifically, or . . . ? AMY: Candle makers! DIMITRI: In Paris, too.

BOB: In the 1960s you had this new group in New York—Andy Warhol, Jane Holzer, Mary McFadden, Freddy and Isabel Eberstadt and Nan Kempner. They were money; they were Park Avenue, but they wanted to be a little bit bohemian. They went to the discos and they had a creative connection and they wanted to go to Andy Warhol parties, they were daring—

BOB: Definitely in Paris in the ’20s. DAISY: Who is the Nan Kempner of today? BOB: Samantha Boardman, maybe. DIMITRI: She’s great but perhaps a few more costume balls . . . .

DIMITRI: They were open-minded. BOB: They were open-minded and they were bored. Look, I’m not society; I was born in Brooklyn. I happened to go to work for

BOB: Americans don’t give costume balls, because they have this puritanical streak. So they invented charity balls, and again in the ’70s still the remnants of those important

BOB: This whole idea that you had to have a career started with your generation. Back in the day, if you were on a few charity boards or chaired a few events, you did not have to have a career if you were a Fifth Avenue or a Park Avenue society lady. That was enough. But starting with your generation— PETER DAVIS: Socialite became a bad word. No one wants to be called a socialite. It’s a dirty word. Now, you take people’s picture at a party and it’s like “look at my makeup line, my handbag line, my TV show.” They don’t even want to be known as philanthropists anymore. 40th Anniversary 2015 • AVENUE MAGAZINE | 101

AVENUE | 40 TH ANNIVERSARY But people still want to live social, public lives. Everyone is on Instagram and sharing it and commenting on it. BOB: But If you’re looking at the elite of the art world which overlaps the financial world— the Kravises, the Blacks—they don’t have photographers at their parties and would get upset if someone from the press went to one and leaked it to Page Six. The Herreras still give dinners, well, that’s not the art world, but there are a lot of private dinner parties going on—like the de la Rentas, but they would never want anything in the press, except for Suzy.* Suzy was the only one who was allowed to write about them. DIMITRI: She only wrote nice things. BOB: Yeah, and she made it funny. DAISY: Do you still think there are a lot of dinner parties?

AMY: Romance. BOB: One of the big problems with Washington, people say, is that it’s so dysfunctional. Maybe the reason the political parties don’t get along is that no one has parties! Starting with Laura Bush and Michelle Obama, it’s been seven years now of no White House entertaining. DIMITRI: Every Wednesday they have a party at the White House. BOB: Every Wednesday? DIMITRI: Every Wednesday they have some special night at the White House, I read somewhere. BOB: Well, they have one state dinner a year or two. AMY: There’s no Washington hosts like there were.

DAISY: How do you feel the city has changed? What drew you to New York, and how do you feel as someone who knew socie ty very well in Europe and the contrast? DIMITRI: New York was always very, very international—this is what attracted me. That’s how I grew up. My parents are different nationalities, my four grandparents are from four different countries, different religions. So I grew up in this environment having cousins in every country. Americans have always been welcoming as opposed to Europeans, who can be terribly xenophobic, but here you are greeted with open arms and become friends instantly. As for the contrast between society in Europe and American, society in Europe was always based on the aristocracy, who were the role models. In the United States, the concept of a good family has always been tied to money here, whereas you will have families in Europe who are completely impoverished but received everywhere.

DIMITRI: The older generation, yeah.

“I think the iPhone has killed nightlife in a lot of ways.” —PETER DAVIS

PETER: Anna Wintour had a party for Hamish [Bowles] and there was no social media allowed. AMY: That’s because Vogue was there. PETER: They wanted to control it. BOB: There are a lot of dinner parties in Southampton. Serena Boardman gives a lot of dinners out there, from 8 people to 24 people. They have some beautiful parties in the summer. New Yorkers give dinner parties in Southampton in the summer and Palm Beach in the winter and but go to restaurants and want to check out Monkey Bar, the Polo Lounge and Carbone.

BOB: Like Evangeline Bruce or Kate Graham, [Ina] Ginsburg, or Susan Mary [Alsop], Elsa [Maxwell] . . . The system worked because there was a lot of entertaining at that time in the White House. No one wants to upstage the White House. That’s how Washington is. The embassies don’t even do much, or they don’t want to be seen as being out of tune with the time . . .

AMY: Again, we’re talking about people in their ‘50s and ‘60s. The new riche, the tech riche, the hedge fund riche are very private and don’t care at all about the old status markers.

DIMITRI: Looking elitist.

BOB: I don’t know if I really agree with that. I know a lot of these younger guys who are interested in aesthetic lifestyle and when they are introduced to someone like a Deeda Blair, who has that lifestyle, suddenly they want to learn from her. You go to the house and the food is being passed, not being plated, for example. I think entertaining well is about creating an atmosphere that facilitates social discourse, and it facilitates business, politics— 102 | AVENUE MAGAZINE • 40 Anniversary 2015 th

BOB: Yes, looking elitist. DAISY: Dimitri, may I ask what you feel about all of this as someone who is not from here, although I know you’ve been in New York for a long time . . . DIMITRI: . . . ’83. DAISY: Perfect, is that your age or the year you have arrived? DIMITRI: That is my age, haha.

AVENUE | 40 TH ANNIVERSARY [Jack Bryan arrives.] JACK BRYAN: Hello, I’m Jack. So sorry I’m late.

JACK: I don’t think they’re bad, I just don’t think they had the weight that they used to even when I was a kid. I think notions of exclusivity are people wanting to be more self-exclusive.

DAISY: Don’t worry. AMY: Hip-hop elite, or the tech elite. JACK: I saw I had it in my calendar, and had a freakout moment. AMY: Have some champagne. DAISY: So we were talking about society and where is it going? And it’s interesting, who would you say are the social leaders in New York right now? Who would be the person if you saw their name on an invitation you would get out of bed to see? JACK: Are you looking for a society figure or just a New York person? My generation has a different mentality, more celebrity based. It’s partly from hip-hop culture and easy access to trinkets and stuff like iPhones. AMY: Consumerism. One big change I think there’s no shame or embarrassment around it. The Rich Kids of Instagram is one of the biggest manifestations of that. BOB: Words like exclusive, elite, elitism, are those bad things?

PETER: I think society is hard to define today. When you used to say elite, it would be “People Like Us.” When I was a kid they were like us, they went to school, they went to the beach, saw the same people. Now it’s a free-for-all and a lot more open. People love an invented character. BOB: I’m from a middle-class family; my father was the first Italian-American executive in the coffee trade, very upwardly mobile, but I think if I started pretending like, “Oh, my grandparents came from Naples in the 1800s, we were fleeing Garibaldi” people would see through that and I don’t think I would have been as welcome as I am just by saying, “Yeah, I was born in Brooklyn!” That’s more interesting, probably. AMY: Born in Brooklyn: that whole phrase has changed so much. BOB: When I think of Interview magazine when it started and I was editing it, our

common denominator was glamour. It could be a glamorous scientist, a glamorous politician, a glamorous model, a glamorous socialite, but they had to have something special. You had to have something—maybe it was beauty, maybe it was an old family name, or great talent, of course. This idea that everything should be equal—in the end, it boils down to communism basically. In a communist society, everyone is equal. Everyone is poor. PETER: Except for the communist party leaders! BOB: Elite is the most exclusive society of all. PETER: I find that accusations of snobbism always come from people with no family. JACK: I think that this notion of everything being equal is operating under a false assumption, which is inherent value. In order for something have value it has to be valued by an individual. No book exists as such until it is read and there are no fixed points in space. BOB: Exactly, and even being born into a great family with money, you still have to earn the respect and the influence and the power by doing something with this money, whether it’s philanthropy or scholarship—you have to play a role. DAISY: Do you think gender roles have changed? BOB: Roles were so much more defined back in the day. Men were interested in and did business, sports and politics. Women did decorating, art and entertaining. And I think those lines have completely blurred. You see it in magazines like Vanity Fair, which is almost 50/50 in terms of male-female circulation. Even when Vanity Fair was first revived in ’84, it was almost 90 percent female because it was perceived as more of a society magazine. JACK: Do you feel you now have to spend more time devoted to what is expected of you as a woman? AMY: There’s more pressure now than ever before for women to look or dress in a certain way because of the constant presence of cameras. BOB: The cameras and high definition. 40th Anniversary 2015 • AVENUE MAGAZINE | 103

AVENUE | 40 TH ANNIVERSARY AMY: There are more beauty products out there, more cosmetics. There’s surgery and fashion designers. I have a young daughter and her generation is constantly scrutinizing each other. BOB: But Amy, aren’t there more male cosmetics and male products and Manhattan face lifts? Or obsessing with gym bodies, and abs and pecs? AMY: There’s definitely pressure on men. The pressure is on both sexes or all sexes. But I also think you see capitalism at work. A lot of companies have discovered there’s a whole audience that they haven’t been marketing to. Like men never had to have purses, and— BOB: Oh, when I got to know Estée Lauder— I’d say late ’70s—halfway through a dinner she’d look at me and say, “Have you ever thought of using a bronzer? It’s not makeup, it’s not makeup!” No Estée, I’d prefer not to! AMY: There was one male cosmetic, what was it? BOB: In the ’50s and ’60s when I went to college there was always Old Spice and what was the other one? I mean, the Brooks Brothers, I mean—Peter, you would know! What was the WASP scent? PETER: Polo. When I was in high school that was like the first guy scent

married and when you die.

DAISY: Yeah, I remember that, absolutely.

BOB: I love that.

BOB: Well, Ralph Lauren was such a genius, reviving that kind of WASP style. He made it glamorous in a way it had never been. Fashionable. By commercializing it.

PETER: The first time I was photographed, I was in high school and was photographed at a nightclub. My parents were horrified; it was like I had been photographed with the devil. It was like, “What is wrong with you? You’re done.” My parents said, “You’re never going to get into boarding school. And now it’s completely changed, they hire publicists.

DAISY: Okay, I’ll ask: do WASPs still matter? PETER: Does old money even exist? All the old money is gone. AMY: It just looks smaller compared to these big fortunes that have been made. DAISY: That’s true. PETER: But the one thing is WASPs don’t show their money. I was brought up with two things: fools’ names and fools’ faces always appear in public places, and you’re in the paper when you’re born, when you get 104 | AVENUE MAGAZINE • 40th Anniversary 2015

BOB: Society at large is what Andy Warhol predicted: that in the future everyone would be famous for 15 minutes. Fame has become the ultimate value, the ultimate goal. More than even money in a funny way. And there’s this obsession with getting your picture in the paper. Even if you have to make a sex video to do it, or kill your wife. AMY: You get your fame first and then the money follows. It’s like Real Housewives.

BOB: People have no line between fame and infamy. JACK: There’s another interesting component to this now, because if you are famous for 15 minutes, it’s recorded forever. It’s not like it’s newspaper where it’s wrapping up dead fish tomorrow. It is on the record and it will be there for your kids to see. And that is a new phenomenon. BOB: Let’s just say I could not have made it through the ’70s if people had cameras in their phones. DIMITRI: At Studio 54? Can you imagine if that had been documented? That would have been horrifying. AMY: It’s hard to blackmail anybody anymore. PETER: I think the iPhone has killed nightlife in a lot of ways. Not only because you document everything, but there are fil-

AVENUE | 40 TH ANNIVERSARY a wish to look “elegant”—it’s more about aspiring to look “sexy,” “cool,” or rich, or some kind of combo of the three. DAISY: I wonder what AVENUE’s role in the future will be. We are the physical thing in the lobby that you cannot avoid. We are in your hand when you’re tired at the end of the day. BOB: If you live in a building with a lobby. DAISY: I’m presuming all of you do. So how can magazines with local circulation stay relevant? AVENUE should be the reward for doing things in the community, and how does this stay a relevant thing? What do you all think? BOB: Do whatever you do in-depth and with some style. And also, I think basically when you’re a society magazine, it has to have some humor—I mean, the reporting should be well done, but I think it’s sort of like letting the reader know there’s a certain level of absurdity to this world. That was the genius of Aileen Mehle of Suzy* all those years. Even though she was writing in sort of a nice way, between the lines there was a lot of humor. She would write in-depth coverage of the flowers and then ask, “Who else would tell you these things?” You don’t really need to know this, you know. People still want to look at beautiful photographs and beautiful people. And I think

Even at a fashion show, people are spending the whole time looking at their screens so they’re not actually seeing the show, or feeling the music or even looking at the models. They’re seeing everything through the phone. BOB: Everyone has become so overexposed. PETER: People need to keep their private lives private!

DAISY: I wonder what Edith Wharton would make of this now? I sort of think of her as this great scribe of New York society. I always wonder what she would make of today’s fabric, of the characters that she might find. JACK: She’d probably say, “Well, the forks are totally out of place.”

ACQUAVELLAS: Al Acquavella; Nicholas Acquavella; Eleanor Dejoux: William Acquavella’s three children all work with their father at Acquavella Galleries. The gallery—which has been family operated since its founding in 1921—began with Italian Renaissance works and expanded vastly into major categories of the 19th and 20th centuries under William, who is considered one of the world’s most influential art dealers. Now the third generation of Acquavellas have joined the ranks and will be given the task of continuing the gallery’s uptick. Based on the buzz of the gallery’s current exhibit “Riopelle/ Miro: Color.” So far, so good.

Derek Blasberg: Perhaps known best for attending every great party and getting dedicated Instagram birthday posts from the most admired women in the city, Blasberg will also be the first to remind you that he has an impressive reporter résumé and a best-selling book. How he attained his status aside, he has finally reached his summit as the newly minted “Man About Town” for Vanity Fair. Do we smell the next Truman Capote? DEREK BLASBERG

HANNAH BRONFMAN: An old-school name with new-school social media chops. Currently, she is a DJ/health guru with a loyal following thanks to her Instagram skills.

LUCREZIA BUCCELLATI: The first female to assume the role of designer for Buccellati in four generations of the family business. Her face will be the one associated with the high jewelry brand as it modernizes its marketing practices.

She’s worked with artists like Tom Sachs, Jen Stark and Scott Campbell on items ranging from hokum like pool toys and yoga mats, to functional like plates and wallpaper, to furniture pieces and decor.

Hall F. Willkie, President, Brown Harris Stevens Residential Sales 212.906.9203 or hwillkie@bhsusa.com

he median price of a Manhattan apartment reached a record high of $995,000 in the third quarter, an 11 percent gain from the prior year. Fewer high-end resale closings brought the average apartment price down from the second quarter, but at $1,722,955, it was still 5 percent higher than the third quarter of 2014. While high-end resale closings were down, overall there were 9 percent more apartments sold than in 2014’s third quarter. A jump in new development closings helped fuel this increase. The average price for co-op and condo resale apartments fell over the past year, attributable to declines in three-bedroom and larger apartments. All other size categories posted an increase in their average price compared to 2014’s third quarter. While the third quarter brought fewer high-end sales, this was mainly the result of tight inventory and aggressive pricing. Recent concerns about China’s economy, rate hikes, and a volatile stock market had a limited impact on these findings. The stock market began its decline in late August, long after most of the contracts for third quarter closings were signed. We won’t know the real impact of these events for several months. ✦

“Recent concerns about China’s economy, rate hikes, and a volatile stock market had a limited impact on these findings.”

The Art of Regenerative Medicine

The Cellular Face-Lift

“T

he innovative breakthroughs we’re seeing in Regenerative Medicine are completely transforming how we think about anti-aging,” says Dr. Steven Victor, one of New York’s most sought-after regenerative dermatologists. Consider the surgical facelift. As we age, our faces lose their youthful volume—much like a balloon loses air and begins to wrinkle and sag. While surgery addresses loose skin and lines, it does nothing to restore the primary indicators of a youthful face—volume and plumpness. Alternatively, fat augmentation (transplantation) expertly addresses the volume; however, the results are short lived (1-2 years at most). Now, let’s consider the cellular facelift. The use of Stromal Vascular Fraction Cells (Stem Cells) along with fat augmentation offers the ultimate improvement when seeking a more youthful face and healthier skin (without surgery!). Our body’s stem cells, when properly manufactured and injected into the transplanted fat, provide a long-lasting, natural increase in volume while improving (repairing) the skin’s quality and texture. The immediate and long-lasting results are far superior to a surgical facelift. “Facial aesthetics are being completely reimagined,” says Dr. Victor. “Regenerative medicine is rapidly establishing new realities from the possibilities we used to dream about.” ✦

My Town

Our Neighborhood. Your Home. Cristina Cote - “New York City has an indescribable magic and energy--it’s a microcosm of the world, a magnet for fascinating people. I’m a born and raised Manhattanite but still love exploring. My favorite neighborhoods? The West Village

with its creative vibe, cobble stone streets, charm. The Upper East Side with its classic elegance, it is old New York. The Carlyle, The Mark, Central Park; the world’s most amazing museums at my doorstep. Living in New York feels like I stepped into a Woody Allen film.

The Power Of DOUGLAS ELLIMAN After more than 100 years in business, Douglas Elliman Real Estate is the number one real estate firm in New York City and the fourth largest in the nation. Here, we look back at the company’s rich history and where it’s headed next.

Douglas Elliman Collectors Lounge at Art Basel

ORIGINS Few companies have managed to stay both relevant and innovative after more than 100 years in an industry as competitive and ever-changing as real estate, but Douglas Elliman Real Estate has managed to do it all since its establishment in 1911. In 2003, Dottie Herman, who had been operating a powerhouse brokerage in Long Island and the Hamptons purchased the company alongside business partner Howard M. Lorber. Together, they created the largest and fastest growing real estate firm in New York, with offices from Manhattan to Montauk and, in 2011, Westchester County.

EXPANSION Even after complete domination of the New York real estate, Douglas Elliman continues to grow and expand with new partnerships and ventures, both in the city and beyond. In 2014, Douglas Elliman and fellow real estate giant Knight Frank Residential forged a strategic global brand alliance, which created the world’s largest interactive, connected network for prime and super-prime properties. Douglas Elliman has expanded into key markets with offices in Dottie Herman, President and CEO of Douglas Elliman, and Howard M. Lorber, Chairman of Douglas Elliman 142 | AVENUE MAGAZINE • 40th Anniversary 2015

Douglas Elliman is not in the business of houses: it is in the business of homes. California, Aspen, Long Island and the Hamptons, South Florida, Connecticut, and Westchester, which has only served to grow the company’s reach, bringing their unique services and business approaches to big-money real estate markets where clients want to be. Now, the company boats more than 80 sales offices and over 6,000 top-of-the-line agents.

CULTURAL IMPACT Major brands making an impact on pop culture has become somewhat intrinsic in the business world, but few companies have the relevance and reach of Douglas Elliman. A partnership with the New York Knicks made Elliman the largest executive title partner of Madison Square Garden’s Celebrity Row. A lookbook of celebrities, their entourages, and outfits can be found at NYKnicks.com, and on the Knicks social media accounts. Celebrity appeal and partnerships are nothing new to Elliman, which has a slew of newly minted celebrities working with the firm. Taking their strong media presence a step further—under the direction of Global Chief Marketing Officer Nicole Oge—the company has the print market cornered with ELLIMAN, a hyper-local, ultra-luxe magazine distributed by the newly created ELLIMAN

AWARDS An array of awards crop up for Elliman each year, wide and varied. Most recently, President & CEO Dottie Herman was named one of the most powerful women of 2015 by Crain’s New York. The company itself landed on the Inc. magazine list of the 5,000 fastest-growing private companies, and an Inman Innovator award for incredible strides made in the business world. The company still manages to award others, most notably in a charitable aspect. Douglas Elliman is a long-standing and major supporter of a number of organizations, including the American Heart Association, the Central Park Conservancy, and Big Brothers Big Sisters of New York City. The charity of Douglas Elliman makes sense—it’s an ethos that keeps a business going after a full century. And Douglas Elliman is not in the business of houses: it is in the business of homes. ✦

Media with Editor-in-Chief Richard Pérez-Feria. This endeavor first launched with elevate magazine, dedicated to more global editorial content and Douglas Elliman Development Marketing. Since its inception, both magazines have featured the likes of high-powered celebrities including Naomi Campbell, Victoria Beckham and, in the

Dilip D. Madnani, MD FACS, Manhattan Facial Plastic Surgeon, discusses aging causes

P

atients ask me to help understand what causes their face to age. Why do I have all this extra skin, more lines, falling cheeks? I find pictures to be a wonderful tool to help explain how it occurs, what the future holds, and what can be done. I encourage my patients to bring photos of themselves from 5-10 years ago. There are three processes that occur universally—volume loss, stretching skin, and a change in facial shape from a heart shape to a square. What varies individually is the timing and extent of these changes. Solutions are geared towards each of these; laser skin resurfacing tightens skin and softens creases, injectables are used to fill deep lines and volumize cheeks, and lifting procedures are performed to tighten underlying muscles and remove excess skin to return faces to more youthful contours. Faces change over the years—I hope it’s a little clearer. Dilip D. Madnani, MD, FACS is a dual board certified facial plastic surgeon. According To . . .

In the style of Marcel Proust’s famous questionnaire, we’ve asked 32 New York notables our favorite question: “What do you want to be when you grow up?”

T

hough it’s a fairly recent addition, AVENUE’s back page questionnaire inspired by Marcel Proust’s has become something of an institution at the magazine. Since its inception in 2009, the AVENUE editors have interviewed over 60 New York notables, quizzing them on everything from their favorite city memory to the coolest thing in their apartment. Though the questions are as wide and varied as our subjects, one in particular is always asked: What do you want to be when you grow up? Here, we compiled some of our favorite answers, each one completely representative of their speaker.

“Very, very tan.” —Chris Benz

“My mother. My mother knows Coco Chanel.” —Eloise

“A grandmother, with grandchildren in New York City.” —Amy Fine Collins

“Thin.” —Richard Mishaan

“Happy, secure, and open to new learning experiences.” —Fern Mallis

“Without regret.” —John Barrett 170 | AVENUE MAGAZINE • 40th Anniversary 2015

Ruxton Road At Cove Hollow Farm East Hampton. Remember the Eighties? The Miracle on Ice, the ‘86 Mets? Michael Jackson Moonwalked, Cyndi Lauper just wanted to have fun and Madonna was just like a...well you know. CNN ushered in news on demand, MTV gave us music 24/7 and we all wished we were cool enough to work out at the Vertical Club. The Exxon Valdez coated the Alaskan shoreline, Chernobyl fouled the Russian skies and the Iran-Contra’s had an affair. Yuppies drove their Beemers, kids played Nintendo and IBM and their PC would soon changes us forever. We did some Dirty Dancing, had some Risky Business and didn’t have a clue that when the Terminator said he’d be back that it would be as the Governator. And in the middle of that seminal decade, a sprawling traditional was completed on a gorgeous 2.6 acre lot within Georgica’s bucolic Cove Hollow Farm, enhanced further by acres of scenic easement. Decades later that same residence, variously expanded to 8 bedrooms over 8,000 SF+/- with heated Gunite pool and a sea of lawn awaits a new owner to ponder the possibilities. Ripe for renovation? Sure. But with the potential for a new, significant house, pool, pool house and tennis court, an enterprising new owner might create an extraordinary estate for this stunning parcel awash in Georgica Pond breezes. And just as Studio 54 and the rest of the 80’s didn’t last forever, neither will this property. Create your own Field of Dreams......contact me today. Exclusive. $9.8M WEB# 15699
