THE MAGIC OF

NEW YORK FOR THE HOLIDAYS

Ten of the city’s top concierges offer their favorite festive activities during New York’s holiday season BY ANDREA DOYLE

Andy Williams’ song said it best—“It’s the most wonderful time of the year”— and the holidays don’t get much more wonderful than they do in New York. “It’s a time when even the greatest city in the world presents itself with added luster,” says Regena Falling, concierge at the Park Hyatt. Ice-skating under the iconic Christmas tree in Rockefeller Center, shopping along Fifth Avenue and being awed by the Rockettes at Radio City Music Hall are a few of the notto-be-missed holiday experiences that the city’s top concierges recommend. Here are others: 2 | AVENUE MAGAZINE • CONCIERGE INSIDER

Radio City Music Hall

ERIN MCDONNELL Concierge The Pierre, A Taj Hotel Christmas Department at Bergdorf Goodman “My absolute favorite thing to do is visit the Christmas department at Bergdorf Goodman, which has the most spectacular display of unique, handmade ornaments and decorations from around the world. A word of caution: If you see an ornament you like, buy it immediately, as these beautiful creations sell very fast; especially the Bergdorf Goodman ornaments. After hours perusing this lovely place, I stroll over to the BG café for a glass of bubbly and happily watch the holiday bustle and excitement down on Fifth Avenue.” Carnegie Hall “There is nothing better to put you in a festive mood than to attend one of the many concerts during the most wonderful time of the year. There is a collection of concerts at Carnegie Hall throughout the month of December. A highlight is on Sunday, December 20, at 3 p.m., when the New York Pops celebrates the return of A Charlie Brown Christmas.”

AMH2015_HOLIDAY GUIDE 2015_r1.indd 3

The Gramercy Tavern and Rolf’s “The Gramercy Tavern, one of New York’s top restaurants, decks itself out with gorgeous holiday decorations, not to mention its holiday cocktail: the cranberry daiquiri. Another eatery with the all-time best Christmas decorations is Rolf’s German Restaurant on Third Avenue. They do not take reservations, and the waits can be extremely long, so go early to try and catch a glimpse of the most magnificent decorations you have ever seen.”

TINA MCLELLAND Concierge Four Seasons New York Gingerbread Lane, New York Hall of Science “Located in the Hall of Science in Flushing, Queens, approximately a 35-minute drive from Manhattan, this masterpiece currently holds the Guinness World Record for largest gingerbread village. Jon Lovitch’s 300-square-foot holiday creation made of edible gingerbread will whet your appetite; however, you will have to wait until after the holidays for a taste.” Lights in Dyker Heights, Brooklyn “This neighborhood located in Brooklyn is a spectacular feast for the eyes. You can opt for a tour of the holiday lights, but I prefer to wander the neighborhood and really enjoy all the minute details that make this wondrous display a favorite of locals and tourists alike. As you wander around Dyker Heights, you must visit Tasty Bakery, located on 13th Avenue between 82nd and 83rd Streets. All their delicacies are made by hand, and they even offer sugar-free and gluten-free options for those with dietary restrictions.” A Christmas Carol at the Merchant House “Located in Manhattan’s Lower East Side, the Merchant House Museum is a beautiful slice of history. Each year, they celebrate the season with a retelling of the holiday classic A Christmas Carol, by none other than Charles Dickens himself (played by John Kevin Jones). It takes place in the parlor decorated in 19th-century holiday style. Don’t forget to come a little early for a toast to the season with mulled wine and light snacks in the old-fashioned period kitchen. 4 | AVENUE MAGAZINE • CONCIERGE INSIDER

Saint Patrick’s Cathedral

CAROLYN INNOCENZI Chef Concierge Lotte New York Palace Snow Angels “When the snow is just right, there are many spaces in Central Park for making perfect snow angels or, for something more ambitious, cross-country skiing. In Bryant Park, one can enjoy the holiday shops after skating, as well as enjoying a delicious snack at Celsius.” Houses of Worship “In addition to the many Broadway show options, as well as the famous Radio City Christmas Spectacular, visitors can also enjoy holiday music at some of the most stunning houses of worship, including Saint John the Divine and Saint Patrick’s Cathedral.” Mount Vernon Hotel Museum & Garden “A hidden gem on the Upper East Side, the Mount Vernon Hotel Museum & Garden, formerly the Abigail Adams Smith Museum, transports visitors to the days when midtown Manhattan was a country escape for New Yorkers living at the southern tip of the island. Holiday candlelit tours of the house, which is more than 200 years old, are enchanting.”

SUSANNE CARTER Chef Concierge The Ritz Carlton New York, Central Park More & More Antiques “This quaint and intimate antique store on the Upper West Side charms all year round, but its decorations truly put you in the spirit during the holiday season. More & More Antiques carries unique and vintage Christmas ornaments, as well as other remarkable Christmas decorations. It is the place to go if you are looking for something really special for the holidays.” Gifted Holiday Market Brooklyn Flea “For a true Brooklyn experience, visitors and New Yorkers should head over to the Gifted Holiday Market, a special weekend-only market organized by the popular Brooklyn Flea held in Williamsburg. There are 200 vendors filling 50,000 square feet of space, selling anything from vintage trinkets, jewelry, and artisanal foods.” Christmas on the Park Tea at the Ritz-Carlton “To get into the spirit and take a break from Christmas shopping, both visitors and locals can enjoy the special Christmas tea at the serene and festively decorated Star Lounge at the Ritz-Carlton New York, Central Park. After enjoying the featured Nutcracker Seasonal Blend in the lounge, guests can have their picture taken in the photo booth in the lobby of the hotel and then head to Wollman Rink for ice-skating. There will also be a customized ornament and take-away gift to make the Christmas tea experience memorable. December 15–December 30.”

MICHAEL ROMEI Chef Concierge The Towers of the Waldorf Astoria Lincoln Center “This area becomes quite special during our festive season, adorned with beautiful snowflake-like decorations and an incredible variety of classic music celebrating the holiday season including The Nutcracker ballet, the New York Philharmonic and the Met Opera all in the same area. It is such a festive feeling to attend one of these events and to walk out at night in the winter air, hopefully during a snowfall.” Horse-Drawn Carriage Ride Through Central Park “One of the most picturesque ways to see Central Park is on a horse-drawn carriage on a wintry starry night with a warm muffler and a fur blanket. Then stop for a hot chocolate at the Wollman Rink and ice-skate under the stars with the wintry trees and twinkling lights of our city all round.” Mulino’s of Westchester “This fine dining Italian restaurant in White Plains, New York, becomes a winter wonderland from Thanksgiving through Christmas. The restaurant is decked out with Christmas lights and decorations, including a Santa’s workshop. Snow globes on each table and Christmas carolers in Dickensian costume make the atmosphere complete. Well worth the excursion to White Plains for anyone who loves Christmas.” Lincoln Center

STEPHANIE MATTHEI Concierge The Carlyle, A Rosewood Hotel The Simone “For a special dinner during the holiday season away from the normal hustle and bustle, I highly recommend escaping to the Simone, an Upper East Side treasure, serving French/American fare, welcomed by a charming host named Tina. The New York Times bestowed three stars on this intimate restaurant of 11 tables. Once you have been there you will certainly agree with the paper of record.” Aire Ancient Baths “Aire offers a most welcome tranquil escape from the holiday crush. It is a very unique, relaxing, sensual experience. It almost feels like you have traveled back to the ancient Greek and Roman bath traditions. Booking a two-hour session includes soaking in various thermal baths. You also have the option of adding a massage. Rudolph with his red nose would be green with envy.” Café Carlyle “Luckily I work at my favorite place in New York for the holidays, the Carlyle. The hotel’s public spaces are so wonderfully decorated that it is no wonder so many families take their holiday pictures there. Continuing the tradition of holiday entertainment, from Bobby Short to Steve Tyrell, people still love to round out their holidays with a visit to the Café Carlyle. Should the café be fully booked, don’t you worry: holiday cheer can be celebrated in our world famous Bemelmans Bar with live jazz.”

8 | AVENUE MAGAZINE • CONCIERGE INSIDER

REGENA FALLING Chef Concierge Park Hyatt New York Winter Solstice Celebration at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine “An extraordinary extravaganza of music and dance that offers a contemporary take on ancient solstice rituals. This year Paul Winter’s 36th annual Winter Solstice Celebration takes place December 17, 18 and 19 at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine.” Feast of the Seven Fishes “Several New York City restaurants serve the traditional Italian-American Christmas Eve dinner, the Feast of the Seven Fishes. Some, like Estiatorio Milos, celebrate the entire week leading to Christmas.” Giving Back “There is no better time to give back than during the holiday season. Volunteering is becoming a big request from our guests at Christmas. Holiday food banks; Be an Elf, which enables one to make a difference to a needy child; and soup kitchens happily accept volunteers. Giving back never fails to enliven the holiday spirit.”

Rockefeller Center

CONCIERGE INSIDER • AVENUE MAGAZINE | 9

CARLOS FREIRE Chef Concierge Trump International Hotel and Tower Friend of a Farmer Restaurant “Breakfast at Friend of a Farmer for wonderful comfort food is a favorite. The setting is reminiscent of an upstate New York farmhouse inn.” Brooklyn Bridge “Standing on the Brooklyn Bridge and being mesmerized by the most amazing Christmas tree and the Manhattan skyline, and embracing my wife of 43 years, is the best as I contemplate how wonderful life is!” Ristorante Morini “Shopping on Madison Avenue, and dinner at Ristorante Morini, which offers pan-Italian regional cuisine that can’t be beat.” Cafe Lalo “There is nothing better than a nightcap at Cafe Lalo, featured in the hit movie You’ve Got Mail.”

10 | AVENUE MAGAZINE • CONCIERGE INSIDER

ISABELLE HOGAN Chef Concierge THE MARK Wollman Rink in Central Park “Ice-skating here on a starry winter night is New York magic.” Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree “This worldwide symbol of the holidays can’t be missed. While you are there, venture to Top of the Rock, the observatory on top of Rockefeller Center.” Hot Cocoa at the Mark “The Mark Cocoa Kiosk offers Jean-Georges’ cocoa with whipped cream and Valrhona dark chocolate shavings.”

SPECIAL EVENTS

The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade has been running since 1924 and is one of the main events of the year. Featuring enormous balloons, floats, marching bands, performance groups, performers and more, there is something for everyone. The parade begins at 77th Street and moves down Central Park West to 59th Street, along Central Park South to Sixth Avenue (aka Avenue of the Americas) and down Sixth Avenue until it wraps up around Macy’s at 34th Street. Unfortunately, tickets are not sold to the general public, so early risers get the best spots. The parade begins at 9 a.m., and crowds assemble along Central Park West as early as 6 a.m. The area around Macy’s is obstructed by much of the equipment used for television broadcasting, so we recommend getting an early start and heading uptown toward the Museum of Arts and Design in Columbus Circle. (Tip: There are a few restaurants with views that host lavish breakfasts where you will need advance reservations; in addition, the day before you can observe the Macy’s Giant Balloon Inflation from 3–10 p.m. just above the starting point at 79th Street.) Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree Lighting is on December 2 from 7–9 p.m. The lighting ceremony features live performances and attracts tens of thousands of visitors, and it is a first-come, first-served event. Typically a Norwegian spruce tree ranging from 70 to 90 feet tall and topped with a 550-pound star, it will remain lit until January 6 at 8 p.m. Officially beginning in 1933, the unofficial tradition began earlier during the Great Depression. (Tip: There are a few restaurants in Rockefeller Plaza hosting events that require advance reservations.) New Year’s Eve and the Ball Drop in Times Square caps off the culmination of the holiday chaos. Although there are thousands of places to ring in the new year, there is only one Times Square. Celebrations first began in Times Square in 1904, and the ball lowering celebration began in 1907. The “Bow Tie” of Times Square is typically shut off to traffic by 3 p.m. and revelers are sectioned off throughout the zone, so please arrive very early if this is your ideal place to be. The lighting and raising of the ball begins around 6 p.m., and the event programming continues on for the next six hours. (Tip: There are a plethora of restaurants and rooftops that host events, some for all ages and some for adults only, with a viewing of the ball drop; please see your concierge for options and reservations.)

HOLIDAY WINDOW Among NYC’s greatest holiday traditions are the Christmas and holiday windows displays at our finest department stores. Much time and effort goes into planning these thrilling presentations of artistry for you to visit day or night. You can visit in any order, but here is the list of must-see magical window displays from northeast to southwest: Bloomingdale’s—Lexington Avenue at 59th Street Barneys—Madison Avenue at 60th Street Bergdorf Goodman—Fifth Avenue at 57th Street Henri Bendel—Fifth Avenue at 56th Street (Tip: You will notice a few other stores on Fifth Avenue with holiday window displays.) ICE-SKATING RINKS Although not for everyone, gliding around on one of the city’s ice rinks is a wintry thrill and one of our local traditions. Here is a quick breakdown of our rinks. Visit your concierge for the most up-to-date information: The Rink at Rockefeller Center: Perhaps the most iconic (but with limited space), this rink has the longest queues. You will also be skating under the world-famous Christmas tree and in front of the bronze statue of Prometheus (Tip: They do offer a VIP option, which includes skipping the line for an extra fee.) Wollman Rink at Central Park: More spacious and typically with shorter lines than Rockefeller Center, this rink is set in one of the most picturesque areas of the park, with Manhattan skyline views all about. (Tip: A VIP option is also available.) The Rink at Winter Village in Bryant Park: Located in Midtown Manhattan, this rink is ringed by a holiday bazaar with plenty of shops and food options. (Tips: Free admission, but there is a charge for skate rental and bag storage; it also offers a VIP option to skip the line.) Including Lasker Rink at the top of Central Park and Sky Rink at Chelsea Piers, there are always more options as you move away from Midtown and also in the boroughs. There are often a few, smaller pop-up rinks that appear each holiday season so keep an eye out for those as well.

ARTS & THEATRE There are myriad shows offered that you sadly may not have time to attend them all. Our city boasts 40 Broadway theaters as well as off Broadway, the Metropolitan Opera, New York City Ballet and many other entertainment venues, such as Radio City, Madison Square Garden, and Barclay’s Center in Brooklyn. Your concierge will have all the details and the ability to procure the best tickets for you at peak times. Among our favorite picks at this time of year are: New York City Ballet’s run of George Balanchine’s The Nutcracker The Radio City Christmas Spectacular, Starring The Rockettes The Phantom of the Opera Jersey Boys An American in Paris Something Rotten Hamilton

A FEW OF THEIR

FAVORITE

THINGS

A selection of AVENUE’s friends share their NYC holiday traditions ILLUSTRATIONS BY TYLER RESTY

40 | AVENUE MAGAZINE • CONCIERGE INSIDER

SHOSHANNA GRUSS Fashion Designer What is your favorite New York activity during the holidays? My favorite activity during the New York holidays is ice-skating at Wollman Rink at dusk. There is nothing more beautiful then skating among the snow and trees and looking up at the beautiful, twinkling skyline. Where are your favorite places for holiday shopping? Holiday shopping in New York is a sport unto itself! I love ABC Home for eclectic gifts for the whole family. Saks Fifth Avenue is another great one-stop shopping experience. Where are your favorite places for holiday meals? Nobu, Mr. Chow, Philippe: They always feel fun and celebratory for the holiday season. They always have great energy and never disappoint! What is your favorite NYC holiday memory? NYC during the holidays is a magical place. I always look forward to the season. I love the coziness of the city, the ability to do anything and everything, and then be home, among the holiday chaos, safe and comfortable with the whirlwind right out my door, if I want a little more...

BRETT HEYMAN Founder and Designer of Edie Parker What is your favorite New York activity during the holidays? My favorite activity for the season is ice-skating in Wollman Rink. Where is your favorite place for holiday shopping? Bergdorf Goodman is my favorite place to shop, but I love walking up and down Fifth Avenue and looking at all the windows. Where are your favorite places for holiday meals? My favorite holiday meal is at Gramercy Park Tavern. What is your favorite NYC holiday memory? Having frozen hot chocolate at Serendipity!

Lincoln Center

ISA TAPIA Shoe Designer What is your favorite New York activity during the holidays? Lincoln Center is a beautiful place to visit during the holidays. I love getting dressed up and sipping champagne under that enormous glittering chandelier and then going to the most opulent opera production of the season. Where is your favorite place for holiday shopping? I love Bergdorf Goodman and Saks Fifth Avenue, and I also love shopping downtown boutiques for antiques or the flea market in Brooklyn. Where are your favorite places for holiday meals? I love to go to the Carlyle; I slip into the velvet couches and listen to the jazz and piano. What is your favorite NYC holiday memory? Call it clichĂŠ, but Central Park covered in snow is very hard to beat!

REBECCA TAYLOR Fashion Designer What is your favorite New York activity during the holidays? Ice-skating with my children at Bryant Park. Where is your favorite place for holiday shopping? My favorite place for holiday shopping is at Bird in Brooklyn. Where are your favorite places for holiday meals? Balthazar’s for lunch—it’s a New York classic. What is your favorite NYC holiday memory? One of my favorite holiday memories was when my husband and I went to Shelter Island for the first time and it began to snow. It was so magical and perfect that we ended up buying a home that weekend.

Park Avenue Brick Church

DANIEL BENEDICT Co-founder, Amplify Partners What is your favorite New York activity during the holidays? The Park Avenue Brick Church tree lighting and caroling night is hands down NYC at its best. It’s amazing how many people show up to sing, and it’s so charming—even though it’s always a chilly night! Where is your favorite place for holiday shopping? The Ralph Lauren shops on Madison and 72nd Street. It is stunning how they transform the store into a wonderland of cashmere and suede. I also love Monograms of Madison. They have perfect gifts and are so helpful. Where are your favorite places for holiday meals? La Grenouille is always so beautiful and festive for the Holidays! What is your favorite NYC holiday memory? I love taking my godchildren to the Standard High Line Hotel for ice-skating. I love how they create a rink smack-dab in front of the hotel—so fun! JONATHAN ADLER Potter, Designer, and Author What is your favorite New York activity during the holidays? I wish I could say something cute like carriage rides in Central Park (horse controversy aside), but the truth is that my hubby Simon [Doonan] and I both work in retail so the holidays are go-time for us. Our favorite activity is probably escaping it all and heading to our place in Palm Beach. Where is your favorite place for holiday shopping? One perk of being me is that I never have to struggle when it comes to gift giving. It’s all Jonathan Adler all the time. Where are your favorite places for holiday meals? I’m a regimented eater, so my favorite places for holiday meals are also my favorite places for non-holiday meals. Il Cantinori is chic, classic, and embodies New York. The elephant ear cookies at Sant Ambroeus are my vice and are 100 percent responsible for any back fat I may have. And Dover Street Market—for eggs and Commes des Garçons—has become a go-to. What is your favorite NYC holiday memory? My first holiday season with Simon. We met 21 years ago in November and our first New Year’s Eve found us going to an Alcoholics Anonymous disco party in a basement in the Village. I have absolutely no idea why we were there. Neither of us had an alcohol problem but there we were, and it was extraordinarily fun. I’ll always remember it.

DIANE RAMIREZ Chief Executive Officer, Halstead Property What is your favorite New York activity during the holidays? My personal favorite activity is to go to all of the pageants of my grandchildren and watch them in their roles as shepherds or snowflakes and singing with their class with huge smiles on their faces! My New York favorite activity is to walk down Fifth Avenue and turn west at Rockefeller Plaza—I love seeing the beautiful angels leading to the always breathtaking tree that’s covered in beautiful twinkling lights. It never fails to make me feel so excited to be a part of this great and magical city. Where is your favorite place for holiday shopping? Tough question! Honestly, my favorite shopping is with my entire family running to the local mall on Black Friday after a sensational Thanksgiving together. I love seeing everyone start to chip away at their gift-giving lists—and then all share their great finds and bargains at the end of the day. Where are your favorite places for holiday meals? My favorite place for holiday meals is always at the home of one of my family members and it’s usually in the country. What is your favorite NYC holiday memory? My favorite memory will always be watching the young ones (my children and now my grandchildren) come out to the living room and be wide-eyed and excited that Santa made his visit and filled the rooms with lots of toys and joy.
