DEAR READERS, APRIL IS TRADITIONALLY our Hollywood issue because of Peggy Siegal’s excellent Oscar coverage. It also happens to coincide with National Parkinson’s Month. For that reason, I took the unusual step of interviewing our cover subject, Sam Fox, myself for this issue, because my father, like Sam’s father, Michael, suffers from Parkinson’s disease. I don’t remember exactly when I first learned that my father had a disease, but I was in my early 20s. I remember thinking that it helped explain why Daddy’s handwriting had become like a three-year-old’s scrawl.

One of the reasons that I wanted to interview Sam Fox myself was to see if there was any point at which our experiences overlapped. They don’t really. Sam’s grown up with his father’s having Parkinson’s disease; he never knew him without it. I very clearly remember my dad before he got sick. When my father was diagnosed, he didn’t tell his children for quite some time; he relied on my mother’s support in order to come to terms with the disease. My mother and Tracy Pollan (Michael J. Fox’s wife) are really the unsung warriors in the battle against Parkinson’s. Being a child of a parent with PD is no picnic, but being a spouse is even harder, as they are forced to bear the psychological burden of caring for someone who is ill. Unlike other diseases, Parkinson’s has no highs and lows, there is none of the relief of remission or the terror of the illness’s return: it’s just one steady, inexorable decline. But I want to end on a positive note. One of the best things about Michael J. Fox is the optimistic courage with which he’s faced PD. One of the hallmarks of his

One more thing, last summer when I began thinking about doing this story, I was sitting next to Toby Pell, son of Claiborne Pell, the late senator from Rhode Island who died of complications from Parkinson’s disease. I told him how as the child of a person with Parkinson’s that I often felt powerless as to what I could do for my dad, and I talked to Toby about putting Sam on the cover of AVENUE. He said that was great, but suggested that if I really wanted to help my dad, the best thing I could do was make him laugh. I’m not sure that this issue will make you laugh, Daddy, but I hope it makes you proud. Daisy Prince

DEAR FRIENDS, WE ARE PLEASED to be back in New York after a successful launch of AVENUE on the Beach in South Florida for our winter issues. It made sense to us to follow our readers as they migrated south in December, January and February and are pleased to report that the response exceeded our expectations. We will certainly be back down south next winter! We are excited to share this month’s glamorous Hollywood issue and looking forward to next month’s art and jewelry coverage, before heading out East for the summer with June, July and August installments of AVENUE on the Beach. This month contains one of my personal favorite pictorials of the year: our annual real estate shoot. Our editors had the brilliant idea of a Mad Men theme for this year’s photo story—it is at once a nod to one of the all-time most popular TV series coming to an end, a tie-in to our Hollywood issue, and a theme that everyone enjoys. The city’s most successful real estate executives and brokers joined us on set for three days, ready to personify the ‘60s spirit, and the process was just as fun as the results. T

he Museum of the City of New York’s Winter Ball celebrated its 30th anniversary, and its creator, nurturer and grand poobah, Mark Gilbertson, reminded us that 30 years ago people would find nooks, crannies and utility rooms around the museum to smooch in. How divine, and why doesn’t that happen now? I wondered. “We were 30 years younger,” Mark reminded me, again. Spoilsport. It continues to be a great party: intimate, cozy, populated with familiar and gentle souls, with nary a personal publicist in sight. The Pierre’s ballroom hummed with efficiency and elegance, when suddenly, as Mark finished his (mercifully short) speech, out burst a madly frugging Madonna impostor, followed by equally energetically gyrating Diet Coke can–clad dancers. Vice Chair Kathy Prounis had planned this as an anniversary surprise for Mark, and surprise him it did, as we witnessed his loss of color as he mouthed “What the hell . . . ” before he realized it was a loving prank, one intended, with the light sticks passed around, as a way to get us 30-year-anniversary folks up and dancing. It worked, and among the revelers were Chairs Tara Rockefeller, Burwell Schorr, Alexia Hamm Ryan, Andrew Roosevelt, Allison Rockefeller (uber glam in a sparkling Oscar), Sara Ayres, Sloan Overstrom, Calvert Moore, Nicole Mellon and Celerie Kemble; Vice Chairs, including Dana and Larry Creel, Kathy and Andrew Thomas, Heather Mnuchin, Anjali and Prakash Melwani, Mary Kathryn and Alex Navab; and committee members Chappy Morris, George Farius, Jamie Tisch (who won the trip to Cap Juluca), Christopher Johnson, and Fashion Week darling Peter Copping, Oscar de la Renta’s new creative director, who also, along with Taffin, sponsored the event, and arriving with the always chic Eliza Bolen. Several of these same lovely ladies headed down to Palm Beach the very next week for the annual Women’s Board of Boys Club of New York’s fashion show, this year featuring Michael Kors and his Spring 2015 collection. New York’s very own Boys Club, of course, helps countless boys at their three locations, through effective programs and its supportive Aerin Lauder Kathy and Othon Prounis Zinterhofer community. Amy Griffin, president of the Women’s Board, told me: “The lunch was gorgeous and elegant, and having Michael there made it all the more more special. It was stunning seeing the models come up the stairs and into the house. I’m so proud of our board and the turnout, as great things are happening for our boys.” As most had left the frozen tundra of New York, and rain was forecast for Palm Beach, all were especially cheery that the sun shone all day. THE FABULOUS FENDI Silvia Fendi, scion of the family, talks about her love of the ever-shifting world of fashion, the history of her family company and how she’s been fortunate enough to remain grounded in an ever-shifting family business.

I

f Silvia Fendi shows any sign of being exhausted after having flown in from Italy, she certainly didn’t show it. The only member of the Fendi family to remain at the company and one of its most important creative talents, she was quite happy to indulge in a cocktail after carefully perusing the list at the Mercer Hotel. Eventually settling on a Bellini, Fendi gently sipped her drink throughout our talk. It’s not the first time by any stretch that Fendi has been to New York; she spent a lot of time here as a young woman, and her knowledge of New York nightlife is pretty impressive. In the 1970s and ’80s she regularly used to go out all night, hitting hotspots like Studio 54 and then heading straight to work in the morning. She remembers getting the hairy eyeball from her doorman, who would ask her, “Why didn’t you sleep last night?” She remembers, “My sister and I were famous [at the office] because we would work all day and go out all night with no break.” Despite burning the candle at both ends, Fendi had the stamina required to stick with the job and is now the only family member retained by the company, which was acquired by LVMH in 2001. She retains creative direction over the women’s accessories, kids’ wear and menswear lines at the company, and her visit to the United States coincides with the opening of their new flagship Fendi store on 57th street and Madison. It’s an old company; Fendi was established by Adele and Edoardo Fendi in Rome in 1925. They famously had five daughters together, all of whom worked for the family business. Sylvia is the daughter of Anna, the second eldest daughter. Fendi is a company that, as a brand, strongly identifies with its Roman roots. Silvia says that their parent company LVMH is very interested

in preserving the company’s association with the city. With their long-standing connection to Rome in mind, Fendi agreed fund the restoration of the Trevi Fountain. The way Silvia tells it, Pietro Beccari, the CEO of Fendi, heard on the news one morning that part of one of Rome’s most celebrated landmarks had fallen off at night, and he phoned Rome’s mayor to say that Fendi would like to do something for the fountain: that Rome has so many monuments, it’s so expensive for the city to take care of everything. As Silvia puts it, “We really think to help preserve our cities helps preserve our history. Because Rome is a city that gives you a lot, especially to anyone who is creative.” Work on the fountain finished earlier this month. Fendi is pretty passionate about fashion, but I wonder that since the company is now owned by a larger corporation if anything has changed for her. If Silvia feels any regrets about the family not owning the brand anymore, she isn’t sharing them. It seems to a relief for her to settle into a life of letting the artistic juices flow: “I like the creative part of the work, which is the heart of the company, so for me, nothing has changed, because I do what I was doing before.” It would be impossible to talk about creativity at Fendi without mentioning Karl Lagerfeld and his influence on the brand. He joined the company in 1965 as the creative director for fur and ready-to-wear, and he remains in the role today. He’s just celebrated his 50th year with the brand, marking the longest fashion collaboration of its kind in history. Silvia speaks with great fondness about Lagerfeld, his energy and imagination; he clearly has now become part of the company’s DNA.

Silvia is no slouch in the creative department herself: she invented the Fendi Baguette bag, which almost instantly became a cult classic. It zoomed off shelves in the late ’90s, and other creations followed. Silvia’s says that she’s known what she wanted to do since she was a little girl. She was always keen to be in the business and never had a strong desire to do anything else. Although educated in London, Italy and Switzerland, Fendi was not a stellar student, but she always wanted to work.

She’s passed her creative genes on to her daughter, jewelry designer Delphina Delettrez, who has just opened her first store in London. Silvia is wearing earrings created by her daughter; she fingers the rather large pearls with pride when I ask her about them. She has two daughters and one son, all of whom are artistic fields. Fendi is always inspired by her home city of Rome. “Because in a city that has always had a flow of history you can really see how the human being has evolved and been creative. Every day you go out and discover something, different styles. I like the clash of different styles. It’s a never-ending source of information and ideas.” When she’s not working, Fendi can be found at her farm outside of Rome on an Etruscan site, where she keeps horses and sheep. It sounds wonderfully peaceful. Returning to the subject of fashion, I wonder if she’s had any life experiences or thoughts about the world of fashion in which she grew up. Unlike most people who wish to enter what looks like a job that epitomizes a glamorous lifestyle, Fendi was always aware of what hard work that would entail. “I think I succeeded in keeping my feet very attached to the floor, because sometimes success can give you a headache.” Having come from a fashion family, Fendi was able to avoid many of the pitfalls and always knew that the fashion world is a 24-hour-a-day job where what you loathed yesterday you might be devoted to today. “One thing I learned is that in fashion you never say never; something you don’t like today, you may like tomorrow. Never no, never yes, always maybe.” ✦

Go West, Young Swell On the Upper West Side, the Chatsworth, a classic Beaux Arts apartment house, is reborn at age 110. It may not be social nirvana, but it has always had its attractions.

A

t a Fifth Avenue book club a few years back, a member could barely contain himself over an anecdote recounted in Rogues’ Gallery, this columnist’s book about the colorful cast of characters behind the Metropolitan Museum of Art over the course of its 145 years of existence. Of all the stories the museum’s late director Thomas Hoving told about his former employer, it was the one he, too, considered the funniest. At its center was Jules S. Bache, owner of the Bache & Co. brokerage concern. Now perhaps best remembered as the father of society hostess Kitty Miller, who once taught her lap dog to get up on its hind legs and give a Nazi salute, Bache was a prominent art collector who gave 63 objets d’art and paintings to the Met. But he was also “a well-known man on the town, I mean really, a reprobate,” Hoving told me. He died “in the arms of his black mistress on the West Side. In those days, it was probably worse to be on the West Side than it was to have a black mistress. On the East Side, it might’ve been okay!” Hoving’s delight in that story came to mind while leafing through the marketing materials for an old but new-to-market condominium, the Chatsworth, a reborn Beaux Arts extravagance that dominates the corner of West 72nd Street and Riverside Drive. After its opening in 1904, its redeveloper’s web site boasts, “Manhattan’s elite flocked to the Chatsworth making it . . . a haven for society’s darlings.” Well, not quite. Covering 11 lots and consisting of two connected 13-story towers decorated with classical details, and an adjoining 8-story addition on 72nd, the Chatsworth originally contained 74 apartments in suites of between 2 and 20 rooms (some with laundries) in the large buildings, and in the annex, a single 11-room, 4-bath apartment per floor. The two main buildings, which cost $1.25 million to erect, were connected only by a hallway on the main floor that contained $60,000 worth of Caen stone, Circassian walnut and bronze. “The location is one of the most commanding in the city and affords an unobstructed view of the [Hudson] river from the Narrows to Tarrytown and the Tappan Zee,” the New York Tribune wrote fifteen years after it opened. At the time, the Chatsworth was still considered “the last word in apartment construction.” Architect John F. Scharsmith produced “an exceedingly lavish product that would be in competition with the contemporaneous

Dorilton, not far away at 71st Street and Broadway, and the justcompleted over-the-top Ansonia at 73rd Street and Broadway,” says New York apartment house historian Andrew Alpern. The Chatsworth’s amenities included a café, a billiard room, a barber shop and a hairdressing salon, valet and tailoring services, a sun parlor across the entire top floor, and electric bus service along 72nd Street from Central Park West to the building.” Told of the claims being made about the Chatsworth’s past social glories, Alpern jokes that given its West Side location, that sort of lavish living would only have appealed to “misfit society darlings who suffered from a pressing need to feel pampered and better-served than their neighbors,” who then mostly lived without cafés and barbers in private houses on the East Side. In truth, like most buildings on the West Side, and despite the hoity-toity name and decorative elements borrowed from the Duke of Devonshire’s Chatsworth House in England, the rental building attracted residents who were something less than New York’s aristocracy. Over the years, they included ballerina Albertina Rasch, chemist Charles Baskerville, architect Joseph Freedlander, corporate lawyers like Ralph Oakley (who represented Big Tobacco), golfer Frank Presbrey, New York Stock Exchange vice president B. Ogden

Buildings comparable to the West Side’s century-old architectural extravaganzas can’t be recreated. “You can’t afford to build that way,” says developer Ziel Feldman. “You can’t replace these buildings.”

White, doctors like veterans’ champion Samuel Lloyd and Ignac Neumann of the Hospital for Joint Diseases, real estate investors like James Griswold Wentz and Solomon Moses (who was also a patron of the Hebrew Orphan Asylum), several retired businessmen who preferred to be known as turfmen and haunted the racetrack at Saratoga Springs, art dealer and auctioneer James Psilo, and Mrs. Adolph Vietor, a relation of the Steinway piano clan. The most famous early resident was likely Charles Norris, chief medical examiner of New York during the Depression. By 1939, the Chatsworth and its residents were both showing their age. Charles Levin, operator of the Cameo Theater, which showed mostly Russian Communist films, killed himself by jumping from the roof of a building next to his theater that year. A neighbor who also died that year was Frederick A. Stokes, whose eponymous publishing house printed books by H. G. Wells, Stephen Crane and John Masefield. Other Chatsworth residents at the time were Laura Calvert Bacon, whose husband, Henry, designed the Lincoln Memorial; Virginia Harned, an actress who created the role of Trilby in the original 1895 production of Svengali; and Doty Hobart, a screenwriter for Mary Pickford and Lillian Gish. In other words, the Chatsworth was home to a typical cast of West Side characters, accomplished but, as snooty East Siders would have said,

Nowadays, the social geography of New York City is far more catholic and forgiving, with retro-style limestone buildings like 15 Central Park West bringing East Siders west, and glassy condo towers on 57th Street bringing the rest of the world to Midtown. HFZ Capital, which is redeveloping and upgrading the Chatsworth with all the architectural bells and interior design whistles, does both kinds of buildings, but its founder and chairman, Ziel Feldman, has a special love for historic ones, and counts the restorations of 190 Riverside Drive, 500 West End Avenue and 41 West 72nd Street among his proudest accomplishments. “It’s much harder to renovate, but if you can bring back the ghosts and bring a building up to current times, it can be both rewarding and very profitable,” he says. “Depending on the neighborhood, a prewar building redone well does better than ground-up construction. And on the Upper West Side, people with families need larger apartments with important kitchens, thick walls and floors, and history.” Buildings comparable to the West Side’s century-old architectural extravaganzas can’t be re-created. “You can’t afford to build that way,” says Feldman. “You can’t replace these buildings.” But the new Chatsworth argues that you can bring them back to a semblance of the glorious past. Even if you can’t bring back the bygone days when Jules Bache went west to die in his lover’s arms. ✦

S

am Fox is just like you and me, except that he knows a lot more famous people. As the son of actor Michael J. Fox and his wife, author/actress Tracy Pollan, his encounters with A-listers trickle through his conversation. When Fox mentions his favorite football team (the Jets), he often watches games from the owner’s box; when talking about taking the 23andMe genetics test, he knows Anne Wojcicki personally. At a recent hockey game at Madison Square Garden, he chatted to Tom Hanks about the merits of taking the subway. Friendships with celebrities are part of who he is, but it doesn’t affect his demeanor, and he is entirely unsnobbish. If there is one thing that does define Sam Fox, it’s being part of an extended, clannish family and a dyed-in-the-wool New York City lover. Beyond that, he’s that rare find: a decent guy who went to top private schools (Dalton and Friends Seminary), a top college (Stanford, for two years) and now works for an internet start-up (onefinestay.com). He’s courteous, kind and down-to-earth. However, in one very important way, Sam is a lot more like me than he might be like you. Both of our fathers have Parkinson’s disease. But more on that later.

When I first meet Fox, he’s patiently waiting by the door of the Marlton Hotel, checking his phone and dressed in the standard millennial uniform of jeans, a plaid shirt and sneakers. Taller than his dad, his resemblance to his famous father is uncanny, and I have a feeling that one of the banes of his existence must be a constant stream of well-meaning strangers coming up to him and saying, “Do you know who you look just like . . .?” And lots of not very funny Marty McFly jokes. Although blessedly anonymous for most of his life, there have been moments when the uglier side of fame has reared its head, most notably when Fox was a very young child. A particularly jarring episode occurred when he was with his parents in London, staying in the same hotel as Princess Diana. It was just after Back to the Future Part III had come out, and millions of flashbulbs were trained on the family, scaring young Fox out of his wits. “It was just insane with all the press, and I couldn’t handle it.” There have been other times when he’s been randomly mobbed, once when he was touring colleges in the Midwest at 19 and was ambushed in the airport by a high school girls’ soccer team. On another occasion, it happened the week after his appearance at the Golden Globes in 2013, when he was at his previous job for Farmersweb.com, working out a deal with an Upper East Side girls’ school. “I was handing out samples of apple butter or something, and one of the girls recognized me, and there was this crazy explosion. I think because they had nothing better to do, and it was after sixth period on a Tuesday,” he says lightly, laughing it off. Fox is more puzzled than perturbed by the attention. He doesn’t really understand what the value would be of his photograph on someone’s wall and says his father feels the same way. But he is unquestionably grateful for the access his proximity to fame has given him. He knows that it can help his father’s foundation and will walk the red carpet at their annual fundraiser but then go back to living a (relatively) normal life. Fox is close to both sides of his family. Weekends as a child were spent going to either Connecticut or Vermont with his mother’s family, and other holidays with his dad’s family in Canada. When he was a little older, due to his father’s filming Spin City, the family bought a house in Quogue. “I grew up with all of my cousins, 10 or 12 of us, and I’m still very close with all of them and my aunts and uncles.” (One of his uncles is renowned food writer Michael Pollan, now a professor at Berke-

ley, whom Fox used to visit when he was attending Stanford.) Michael J. Fox has four siblings, and Tracy Pollan is one of three. And Sam has three sisters himself: twins Aquinnah Kathleen and Schuyler Frances, who are 20, and Esmé Annabelle, 14. Growing up in such an extended clan meant lots of support, and so Fox wasn’t burdened by some of the pressures that come with being a child of famous parents. In his own friendships, he’ll admit that his parents were “interesting to people for maybe 5 to 10 minutes” before moving on. “I make the most of the opportunities I have, either fun, social things or being involved in the foundation to do good,” he says. Fox is very involved with the Michael J. Fox Foundation and particularly with Team Fox, the grassroots community fundraising section, and has been since he stuffed donation envelopes for them in high school. “I think a lot of other foundations are learning from us and coming up with outreach programs like it. It’s a way for everybody to contribute something to the cause. No matter the amount of money, you can come together to find a few people to raise a couple of dollars.” Team Fox also has a group running in the New York City Marathon, which Sam has never run. He says he is “not the most athletic person,” but is happy to cheer on the members of Team Fox who complete their goals. “My mom and sisters and I are always there with lemonade at the home stretch.” As one of the members of the Leadership Council of the Michael J. Fox Foundation I’ve always been impressed by how much the foundation does to support members of Team Fox. They have just launched a new extreme sports initiative, Tour de Fox which is a three month physical odyssey undertaken by one of the foundation’s employees, also coincidentally named Sam Fox (no relation). Equally as impressive in a different way is the gala, “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to Cure Parkinson’s.” More than $5 million is raised on the night. Fox comes every year to “A Funny Thing” fundraiser and, as he has a passion for good music, probably always will. We rhapsodize for a while about what a good party “A Funny Thing” is. The program is just the right length of time, with good food and drink, but most important, incredible entertainment. The comedians go always go on first, and in the years I’ve attended they’ve had: Denis Leary, Louis C.K., Colin Quinn, Seth Meyers and Tina Fey. The musical line up is even more impressive: Elvis Costello, James Taylor, Chris Martin, Lauryn Hill and Paul Simon.

Oh, and sometimes Ryan Reynolds stops by because he’s famous and handsome and his father has PD. But the thing that always brings the house down is when Michael J. Fox grabs the guitar and sings “Johnny B. Goode” to a screaming crowd. “A Funny Thing” is where Michael J. Fox’s celebrity connections do make a difference. Sam notes, “You don’t know who’s going to come until 20 minutes before. You wonder if you are going to have a musical guest at all and all of a sudden Dad is like, ‘Oh, hey I just got off the phone with . . .” And Paul Simon turns up and plays to a sold-out crowd. Fox doesn’t remember when his father didn’t have PD. He used to call him “Shaky Dad” as a child, in reference to his father’s difficulties controlling his dyskinesia—or trouble performing voluntary movements, which often occurs as a side effect of longterm therapy with Levodopa. In many ways, Fox is an old soul, less inclined to be out partying than someone else the same age might. His two nods to any kind of rebellion are the fact that Fox has a tattoo of a ham on his lower arm, (“I know, a ham, pretty funny for a Jewish boy”) a symbolic gesture for a friend who died, and an earring. It turns out that the earring has been around since he was 11 or 12, when Fox managed to cajole his parents into letting him get one in exchange for a trip to the doctor he didn’t want to make. “It was very arbitrary because I had wanted one for a while. At that time, my dad had his ear pierced anyway, so it wasn’t like they could really say no.” He said in terms of strictness, his upbringing was right down the middle of the road. As you might expect from someone who got into Stanford, Fox worked incredibly hard as a teenager—his parents were always trying to get him to go out, and neither he nor his sisters had curfews, because they didn’t take advantage of their parents’ trust. If this sounds like Fox is an introvert, that’s not the case; he’s actually pretty outgoing and has a natural charisma that he seems to have inherited from his father. The other aspect of his character that Michael J. It’s a way for everybody to contribute something to the cause.” whatever your circumstances, not letting it affect how you go through life.” Although Fox seems generally upbeat about his father’s disease and life in general, there is no question that having a parent with a debilitating illness changes your outlook on life. Fox is unafraid to face his future, and to that end has bravely taken the genetic test 23andMe to find out if he has genetic changes that would increase his risk of developing Parkinson’s. He doesn’t. He is also the only one in his family to have taken the test. As someone who is certainly at risk for developing the disease herself (and who also hasn’t taken the test), I’m impressed at Fox’s courage. Wasn’t he terrified to find out the results? “Part of what I get very strongly from my dad is just not worrying about the things that worrying isn’t going to help. He tries to teach that as his mindset but if it’s not your mindset it’s very hard to wrap your head around. My sisters, my mom, are optimists too, but they are not the same kind of roll-with-thepunches optimists that my dad and I are. Luckily, I haven’t had too many punches.” In most respects, Fox comes off as a fairly carefree guy. MJFF board member and family friend Barry Cohen is certainly a fan. “My kids grew up with the Foxes in the same Manhattan building. Sam quickly became part of our family. Sam is now a Renaissance man, but before that he was a Renaissance boy. We’ve been to Carnegie Hall and the Philharmonic together. We’ve been to see the Who and John Mayer. Sam introduced me to ski biking, and he knows way more about food than I ever will.” Fox’s interest in food led him to drop out of Stanford to work for Farmersweb.com, an online company that connects farmers directly to restaurants and is very much in line with the popular farm-to-table movement. He has since transitioned to a new job in the online world called onefinestay. An upmarket home-stay company, Onefinestay was founded in London and is just expanding into New York. The company finds hosts who want to let out their homes when they are out of town, and onefinestay applies a hotel-like, high-end level of assistance. For the guests it’s a turn-down service, and for the hosts it’s turn-key. Unlike similar companies, every guest is met in person by someone from onefinestay who walks them through the apartment and makes sure they understand how everything works. The personal greeting is also a guarantee against some of the, ahem—shall we say—unsavory elements that seem to have plagued the home-stay industry. Fox came on board a year and a half ago working in sales. His colleague, Erin Booth, sings his praises: “Sam was our one-man sales team in a period of high growth for the New York business, meeting with and signing over half of our portfolio. He has a really great way with people and a natural ability to make connections.” Fox has now slurped down his second cup of coffee and paradoxically, after all that caffeine, seems more relaxed and more like the 25-year-old he is. We return to his love of music, and Fox even shyly admits to playing bass and guitar. At his summer camp in Vermont, Camp Killooleet, run by Pete Seeger’s brother, John, Fox was in the band. He teases me for not knowing who Pete Seeger is: “Banjo player, probably one of the most famous folk musicians ever,” he says. We also have the ubiquitous social media conversation, and it turns out that there are Sam Foxes far more famous than he is. He gets tweets aimed at them sometimes, like the one he got from Boy George that was meant for the singer Samantha Fox, thanking her for her support of the LGBT cause. “I wanted to say, ‘thanks, you’re welcome, but not the same one.’” As it happens Fox has a newish girlfriend, called Nora, whose parents live in England and whose dad is the dean of Oxford University’s Saïd Business School. His face lights up when he talks about her: it must be serious. As we wind our talk down, I can’t help thinking that if I do end up raising my two little boys in New York City, they could do a lot worse than turning out as normal as Sam Fox. ✦ To find out more about the Michael J. aving worked on Oscar campaigns for 35 years, I found going to the 87th Academy Awards ceremony a serious revelation of the American zeitgeist. On the other hand, celebrating “Oscar Weekend” was just a hell of a lot of fun. I am always asked, “What exactly do you do, how do you do it, and who will win the Oscar?” The studios usually start the Oscar race presenting contenders in Cannes, where Foxcatcher’s Bennett Miller won Best Director. The parade then migrates to Venice, Telluride, Toronto and New York by the end of September. Boyhood, however, stunned audiences in January 2014 at Sundance, where Whiplash won both the Grand Jury and Audience Awards. Both independent films remained the critics’ darling through January 2015, when Entertainment Weekly gave Ellar Coltrane a triptych cover complete with an Oscar declaring “Oscar Front-Runner!” There was a flurry of films released at Christmas that suffered from getting into the race too late, as outstanding as they were. Selma, directed by Ava DuVernay and starring David Oyelowo, and American Sniper were further burdened by the press with red and blue political shackles. Every year, the voters are inundated with screenings and conversations about degrees of merit, as they develop a communal wisdom. Only those who speak to voters can figure out what’s going on. Sometimes voters reposition winners, like in a chess game, and can reduce even the experienced soothsayers to “Who’s on first base?”

The end of the 2015 race was a dead heat tie between IFC’s Boyhood, directed by Richard Linklater, and Fox Searchlight’s Birdman, directed by Alejandro G. Iñárritu, with a possible split of gold between picture and director. An American Sniper/Bradley Cooper upset was Warner Bros. wishful thinking because it became the American public’s most popular film. Few actors have the endurance and charm to campaign, even if they are a “slam-dunk” winner the minute their performance is seen. This year, three of the four winning actors—Julianne Moore, Patricia Arquette and J.K. Simmons—fell into the “slam-dunk” category and still worked their asses off campaigning to win. The Best Actor category was a different horse race between Michael Keaton and Eddie Redmayne to the end.

Hildy Gottlieb and Walter Hill hosted a party in their Spanish-style mansion in Beverly Hills for ICM nominees. Google’s Eric Schmidt wasn’t sure why he was there as CBS’ Les Moonves schmoozed him. Michael Keaton, dapper in his signature three-piece gray shadow plaid suit, was the biggest “get.” Keaton went to the Sunset Tower Hotel for a late dinner, where he bumped into fellow former Batman George Clooney with Amal double-dating with Sacha Baron Cohen and a very pregnant Isla Fisher. I arrived moments after the Clooneys had left and was beside myself with grief for missing a chance to chat up George about his NYC spring shoot, Money Monster. With 96 hours to go before “the envelope please,” Fox Searchlight had permeated the gossip around town that the technical intricacies and showbiz razzle-dazzle of Birdman were more worthy of gold than the test of time for Boyhood. A Birdman sweep had taken flight.

THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 19 Larry Gagosian hosted a gallery opening for John Currin. His paintings reflected Oscar Rosamund Pike Weekend’s bacchanal. Luscious nudes, depicting Old Master portraits, were juxtaposed with pin-ups and B-movies that delighted the artistic sensibilities of Leonardo DiCaprio, Steve Martin, Elton John, Ed Ruscha and Fifty Shades of Grey pop-porn director Sam Taylor-Johnson with young husband Aaron. Also, perusing Gagosian as inspiration for a new script was visionary Wes Anderson, whose The Grand Budapest Hotel later won four Oscars. Derek Blasberg escorted Dasha Zhukova and current Vogue cover girl Karlie Kloss to tables adjoining Currin’s wife Rachel Feinstein, John McEnroe, Jeff Bezos, Brett Ratner, Jean Pigozzi and collectors Bill Bell and Nicolas Berggruen. FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 20 As Bob and Harvey Weinstein and Michael Keaton and Alejandro Netflix’s CCO Ted Sarandos was Gonzalez Inarritu honored at the Publicists Awards lunch at the Beverly Hilton, I slipped away to documentarian Rory Kennedy’s lunch celebrating her nominated Last Days in Vietnam. Her cousin Maria Shriver and hotelier André Balazs cohosted at Chateau Marmont. Since Citzenfour was the sure bet, competitive Kennedy, 11th child of RFK, encouraged Minnie Driver, Laura Bickford, Peter Fonda, Cheryl Hines and Nicky Hilton, to drink up the three vintages of Dom Pérignon. I moved on from documentaries to dresses, war movies to wardrobes, and Vietnam to velvet to Tom Ford’s fashion show, with more stars in attendance than the Oscars, Tonys and Grammys combined. Why, you might ask, was Tom Ford staging a command performance during Oscar Weekend, instead of participating in London Fashion Week? He drew a lousy slot and was assigned to show his fall collection at 9:00 a.m. in London on the Monday after the Oscars. Media savvy Tom knew every inch of press coverage would be lavished on Hollywood’s red carpet looks. So, the oh-so-adored Tom cleverly seized this golden moment of unclaimed party time, 7:00 p.m. on Friday, which just happened to be the hour before Kevin Huvane’s CAA hottest agency party in town— making his show the night’s sizzling starter course. 66 | AVENUE MAGAZINE • APRIL 2015

PR mavens Cindi Berger and Marian Koltai hosted a few tables in the back of Craig’s on Melrose for those students of society, like myself, who needed a hot meal with reporters to digest the day and predict the future, before slipping into the CAA party. If and when invited to the CAA party, the 10 commandments are: #1 Thou shall never tell you got invited (oops), #2 Thou shall never tell where it is, #3 Thou shall never ask for an earlier arrival time, #4 Thou shall never complain about the shuttle if you were not important enough to get a limo pass, #5 Thou shall never overdress, #6 Thou shall never bring an extra person, #7 Thou shall never “work” the room aka “fawn over the famous,” #8 Thou shall never talk on your phone or take a selfie, #9 Thou shall never be boring but never gossip, and #10 Thou shall never expect to be invited back. If you can deal with the greatest dealmakers in town, you are good to go and will see everyone you just saw at Tom Ford’s fashion show.

SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 21 Saturday was Oscar Weekend’s busiest day. Here are brief highlights. 10:00 a.m. Foreign Language Film Symposium moderated by professorial Academy Board Member Mark Johnson. Another Oscar winner was Ida, about a Polish nun.

11:30 a.m. Maria Shriver’s annual Gold Meets Golden event hosted by Nicole Kidman at the Equinox Sports Club supporting the 2015 Special Olympics. As I spoke to Katie Holmes about her upcoming film Woman in Gold, a teenage special needs athlete named Lucy Meyer charmingly invited us to her swim competition as she handed us her card. This profoundly moving moment reduced Katie and me to tears. 12:30 p.m. Barry Diller and Diane Von Furstenberg’s power lunch for gold standard king of Oscar Weekend, Graydon Carter, at their Coldwater Canyon house. Diane’s children Tatiana, Alex and Alexandra von Furstenberg and granddaughter Talita welcomed Prince Pavlos and Princess Marie Chantal of Greece, Rupert Murdoch, Paul Allen, Robert Kraft, Jeffrey Katzenberg, Gayle King, Ron Howard, Anna Wintour, Christian Louboutin, Zac Posen, Lynn Wyatt, and 600 other stylish, slim, and successful social swimmers. Whiplash producer Jason Blum and I dashed off to the Spirit Awards in Santa Monica in his sliver vintage Rolls-Royce, inherited from his grandfather. 3:00 p.m. The Film Independent Spirit Awards aka the “dress rehearsal” to the Oscars was in the midst of celebrating their supercool 30th anniversary. All nominated films were produced for $20 million or less, which is why the Oscars and the Spirit Awards are now synonymous. Sony Pictures Classics’ Michael Barker and Tom Bernard, with 18 Oscar nominations this year, invited me to sit with them. Birdman’s Spirit win forecasted its Oscar win. I emailed Birdman producer John Lesher, “You just won the Oscar.” He emailed back, “Are you sure?”

SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 22 – OSCAR NIGHT Breakfast was with Eddie and Hannah Redmayne on the terrace of the Sunset Tower Hotel. Eddie was cool as a cucumber, I was nauseous. As we devoured omelets, my most encouraging line to him was, “Eddie, if they don’t call your name tonight, you will always have The Danish Girl

next year.” In a week, iconic and heroic Helen Keller will know who The Danish Girl is.” Eddie whispered, “Who is Helen Keller?” Hannah fell off her chair. I then proceeded to reenact the scene from the Broadway play The Miracle Worker, where Anne Bancroft was pumping water onto Patty Duke’s hand as she miraculously uttered, “Water.” Eddie replied, “I’m going upstairs.” Oscar date Lisa Taback and I arrived at 3:30 p.m. I planted myself next to Lara Spencer’s GMA stage, securing a clean shot of myself with every A-list nominee. This audacious move is nothing short of brilliant. My chutzpah enables me to read countless emails from friends the minute I sit down in the Dolby Theatre: “OMG, we just saw you on TV.” Noteworthy was the juxtaposition of two tributes during the broadcast that exemplified the schism in American culture. John Legend and Common sang “Glory,” a cry for racial equality. Then Lady Gaga came out belting “the hills are alive with the sound of music.” The tragedy of Selma and the schmaltz of The Sound of Music both entered

6:00 p.m. Focus Features’ Peter Schlessel hosted a cocktail party in honor of The Theory of Everything at the Chateau for Universal’s Ron Meyer and Donna Langley, producers Eric Fellner and Tim Bevan, director James Marsh, Felicity Jones and Eddie Redmayne. Eddie had just landed from London, where he is filming Tom Hooper’s The Danish Girl. 7:30 p.m. Charles Finch and Chanel hosted their seventh pre-Oscar dinner at Madeo, complete with a mariachi band. This gathering of the international chic has evolved into the coveted ticket for a proper sit-down meal. Everyone actually knows and likes each other. This evening is a throwback to Swifty Lazar’s original Oscar viewing party for social swans that Vanity Fair took over years ago. Here, Julianne Moore joined pregnant Keira Knightley whose The Imitation Game was also an Oscar favorite, Kristen Stewart, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Jessica Chastain and Gian Luca Passi de Preposulo, January Jones, Dree Hemingway, Poppy Delevingne, Stavros Niarchos and Suki Waterhouse (Bradley Cooper’s girlfriend, who was solo as Bradley gave his last Broadway performance of The Elephant Man.)

our hearts and minds in the same year, 50 years ago. As I arrived on the Vanity Fair party red carpet, there was virtually no interest for my picture except from a handful of New York paparazzi we hire regularly. I David Oyelowo found Graydon and Anna Carter but before I could gush, Anna told me I was a big hit with her friend Lord March after organizing his photo exhibition in New York. Anna and I agreed to visit him at Goodwood, March’s ancestral British estate that makes Downton Abbey look like McDonald’s. Graydon was surrounded by his cronies Mitch Glazer, Richard Plepler, Bob Colacello and Jonathan Becker, and had been playing host since 5 p.m. Loyal Vanity Fair staffers Jane Sarkin, Matt Ullian and Beth Kseniak were never far behind. Movie stars spilled into the Annenberg tent, wolfing down In-NOut burgers and taking selfies with every Oscar (gold or Lego yellow) they could get their hands on. People had sat next to each other for the past three hours in the Dolby Theatre were now frantically hugging and kissing each other, whether they won or not. Earlier in the evening, Graydon had a viewing dinner in the woodpaneled circular dining room with eight 65" flat screens. Guests chatted through the show finding each other more interesting. High-powered guests included Jane Fonda, Natalie Portman, Don Rickles, Conan O’Brien, Star Trek director J.J. Abrams, designer Francisco Costa, and high society doyennes Betsy Bloomingdale and Denise Hale. Every single nominee, presenter and A-lister was at this party. Notable New Yorkers included Jason Weinberg, Patricia Clarkson, Chloë Grace Moretz, Emily Mortimer, Edward Norton, Mark Ruffalo, Marisa Tomei, Naomi Watts, Alexander Gilkes, Leonard Lauder, Stephen and son Teddy Schwarzman, Fran Lebowitz, Zoë Kravitz, Matt Lauer, Jimmy Buffett, Idina Menzel, Questlove, IFC’s Jonathan Sehring, Marjorie Gubelmann and Larry Gagosian. MONDAY, FEBRUARY 23 I flew to the Dominican Republic to vacation for a week with Graydon’s friends Emilia and Pepe Fanjul at Casa de Campo. Bob Colacello, Jonathan Becker, Deborah Norville and I regaled King Juan Carlos of Spain, Lord and Lady Astor, Lord and Lady Charles Churchill, Dixon Boardman and Paul Wilmot with embellished tales of our showbiz shenanigans. f Hollywood is the ultimate dream machine, the land where movie magic can transform illusion and fantasy into reality, then in its long and often incredible history no screen divinity ever led a more enchanted life than its greatest princess, the ethereal and exquisite Audrey Hepburn. The story of her life could be the basis for a modern fairy tale, for no star of the celluloid constellation ever dazzled the worldwide public with as breathtaking an American film debut as she, and the aura of her uniquely delicate persona has never faded within the public’s adoration. If divinity ever achieves human form, this goddess will forever remain one of the favored idols in the memory of filmgoers, and my own extended audience with her ranks as one of my most treasured experiences.

Oh, I can’t believe that at all! I was always terribly shy. Maybe I would perform by myself, without anyone watching, but that is quite a different thing. I would perhaps dance to music on a record, but basically I was very timid about being watched. I was always much too embarrassed by an audience, and even now I still go through hell in front of an audience. Actually I was always much too introverted to be an actress at all, so I was certainly not a born performer . . . But I do love fairy tales, and was always drawn to enchantment. I suppose it was the make-believe aspect of it all that appealed to me. Pretending that I was someone else was always fun for me.

✰ On life during war I’ve been asked that question before, about being fairly well-to-do before the war, and then being ruined, for our house was shelled and demolished, and then whatever possessions my mother and aunts had were exchanged for turnips and potatoes to keep us alive during that last winter. So, we lost everything of material value in the war, but we were always able to survive. Except of course during that horrid winter—we called it “The Hunger Winter”—in 1945 . . . They were fighting door to door and house to house, so we had to stay in the cellar for about three weeks. We were actually living in the cellar, and each time we came up another part of the house was gone. I was not a resistance fighter . . . I had lots of friends in the underground. Every so often they would use me to deliver a message to such and such an address, and I would pop it into my sock and head off, dropping the missive off. Actually I’m almost embarrassed to talk about it, for it sounds as if I did something like Mata Hari, when in fact it amounted to very little. Of course, If I had been caught there would have been hell to pay . . . In Holland a bomb would go off each day in a different area, but you would have to go on living every day with that kind of danger being a way of life. It somehow seems not to be so extraordinary any longer when you see it on a daily basis.

✰ On her early career as a dancer I was 24, you see, and although it seems to have happened overnight, as you say, I had been working as a performer since I was 13 . . . I was terribly lucky. Admittedly, I had never had any acting training of any kind, but I had been working terribly hard for years. As I told you, I had been doing those twice nightly reviews at the Hippodrome, which means twelve shows a week, going into the theater at five in the afternoon and coming out at midnight, exhausted. Much of the time I was also doing a third show, a cabaret, for the same producer who was putting on these revues also had a cabaret, at Ciro’s. (We would rush from the Hippodrome to this other theatre—and I mean all of the girls in the revue—where we would change costumes and dash back on-stage to perform in another show.) I would thus go home at three in the morning. You could walk home in London at that hour in those days, but I doubt you can today. My great protection, by the way, were the ladies of the night. They looked out for me all down Piccadilly and

on Bond Street, wherever I was walking . . . I knew them all, their faces and their names, and they watched out for me. They would ask me how the show had gone when I passed them on their corners, so there was always someone keeping an eye out for me. As you know, South Audley is a very elegant address . . . We [Audrey and her Mother] had an elegant address, to be sure, but only one room, with use of the bathroom down the hall and the use of the kitchen.

✰ On meeting Cary Grant Stanley Donen, who directed Charade, was going to pick me up at my hotel in Paris, and he had Cary Grant with him. The plan was that the three of us could become acquainted over dinner, before shooting began. I was thrilled to death, of course, to be in the back of the car with Cary. Well we got to the restaurant, and the waiter poured the wine, and I threw it right all over Cary Grant. I was mortified, as you might imagine. That is my Cary Grant story. He had on a lovely pale gray flannel suit, and in my excitement I knocked the dark red wine all over him ruining the suit.

fear and out in the middle of Spain, was more than I could bear. It was the funniest scene in my entire experience.

✰ On old age and life In my experience giving is much nicer than receiving. The loneliness of old age is a big problem, not so much because people don’t receive love any longer, but because they have no one to give their love to . . . If you can go on giving love to someone or something you can still feel useful . . . The tragedy of getting old is that one is often no longer needed, for the children have left home and begun new lives of their own. Feeling useful, feeling needed, having someone to give your love to is terribly important. By giving love, you receive it. This is how it works. You receive happiness because you are able to give. Perhaps some people would say that this is an idealistic way of looking at life, but I don’t think it is. It is how I see life. ✦ Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany’s

✰ Truman Capote I love to laugh, as you know . . . Truman did nothing but make me laugh, whenever he opened his mouth. He was brilliant, and really very affectionate. One of the times that I will never forget, when I laughed more than any other time, we were both house guests on a Villa in Majorca. We were staying with friends who rented the house from

somebody else . . . Now, in the guest house there was one of those electric bicycles that you work out on . . . Truman spied the bike and said, “Wow, I must try this!” It was the kind that makes you go while it jiggles and massages you. You couldn’t pedal it if you wanted. So, Truman got on and started it, and it was going too fast, but he couldn’t stop it. He had switched it on, but didn’t know how to switch it off, so the pedals were going around, and no one could get near enough to it to stop it. It was really flying, and the wheels were spinning, and I stood there and cried with laughter. It was the funniest thing I have ever, ever seen. The sight of Truman being transported by this mechanical bicycle, hysterical with

Hollander Landscape Design, with unobstructed vistas looking out across both the Atlantic Ocean and Mecox Bay. I’d be doing a lot more windsurfing living there!

TO WHAT LENGTHS HAVE YOU GONE TO MAKE A SALE? I once sold a house with a home theatre. It was a very expensive house, and the buyer really wanted the equally expensive leather seating that was already there. When I saw that the deal could be falling apart because the seller refused to include it in the sale, I bought it for the buyer as a closing gift. Problem solved.

TELL US SOMETHING ABOUT YOU THAT MIGHT SURPRISE US. I go helicopter and cat skiing in the remote mountains of British Columbia. Unlike conventional skiing, which of course I also love, it takes you out of your comfort zone, as you need to rely on the expertise of your guide (and pilot) for your very life. Exhilarating doesn’t begin to describe it.

I worked in fashion for more than a decade as a model and writer, living all over the world. Today I have used that eye for design in home decor and renovations to help clients imagine what a space could be and what sells. It has also led to many of my clients being fellow models, actors and fashion moguls with impeccable taste.

WHAT’S THE BEST PART OF YOUR JOB? I’m a people person, meaning I enjoy conversing and working with others, and this job allows us to get paid for doing that on a daily basis. Most of my clients have become friends or repeat business, so it’s an ongoing thing. WHAT ARE SOME OF THE BEST VALUES OUT THERE NOW? In my daily adventures, I occasionally come across properties that have been overlooked. They may have been overpriced originally or poorly marketed, and may have had some flaws or specific dated qualities. The trick is to be able to view the property with imagination and see past the current furniture with new paint, flooring and possible kitchen/ bath work. There are many homes that are passed over because they haven’t been updated, are cluttered or poorly furnished or have the wrong color combinations. But these projects are fun to work on. I had to tell one client after the 60th home she wanted me to redesign that we should spend time on the ones that work for her and not turn this into a reality design show. She laughed and agreed.

WHAT IS THE BEST PART ABOUT YOUR JOB? I am fortunate. I love architecture and landscape, so all day and every day I get to see the best inspiration and design. I am constantly impressed with the quality and attention to detail of the homes in the Hamptons. The world’s best interior decorators, architects and landscape architects design these magnificent properties, ranging from modern glass structures with wonderful open spaces to classic shingle homes, waterfront homes and lush hedged garden properties. I get to say, “This is my job—how lucky am I!”

Why Is This House Red? Celebrity dentist channels creativity into forward thinking Hamptons homes

C

elebrity super dentist Dr. Marc Lowenberg is expanding his creativity from Hollywood smiles to Hamptons homes with the debut of a new real estate development using Eco Red Shield Lumber. Collaborating with Flying Point Design and Development, Dr. Lowenberg is building a 6,500 sq. ft. home on Cobb Road in Watermill, slated to hit the market in September of this year. While the road to developer is littered with the corpses of the uninitiated, Dr. Lowenberg is a seasoned builder, having built three homes for himself already in the Hamptons: “I really feel like this is a second career. I’m not going to leave my dental practice, but I’m very good at this and this is something that I really love.” And like any great story, this one has a signature soundtrack. Dr. Lowenberg began his dental practice with rock n’ roll’s most famous set of teeth when, after a chance pairing with the personal physician for the Rolling Stones – in the thicket of the Vietnam protests in Washington DC – a younger Marc was given the message: “finish dental school, and I’ll send you the Rolling Stones.” His practice exploded, and soon every rocker from the ‘70s was busting down his door for dental work. From the beginning Dr. Lowenberg was introducing new innovations. He pioneered the art of porcelain veneers, (a façade, less than a millimeter thick, that go over teeth to change their shape and color), when his contemporaries in the field were calling it, “hogwash.” The veneers required a deft touch, because as Dr. Lowenberg notes: “you can’t give everybody the same teeth. You have to make smiles that work with that person’s face and that person’s personality . . . having done it for forty years, I’ve perfected it to the point of true artistry.” His superstar rolodex is undeniable proof; or put it this way, if you’ve ever glanced at a magazine rack, then you’ve seen his work. It’s no surprise then to hear that Dr. Lowenberg will be bringing new innovations to the Hamptons real estate market. AMY FINE COLLINS is an art historian, author and special correspondent for Vanity Fair, writing about design, art, fashion, society and more since 1990. This Upper East Sider can be spotted anywhere from Fashion Week front rows to movie screenings to exhibition openings, and always in striking apparel. But occasionally she escapes the city for some r&r, and—no surprise—does so in style.

Everything you could want

Ultimate escape

Especially when we have winters that feel like the second coming of the Ice Age, I find that there is no destination with more reliably beautiful weather, more inviting water, and friendlier people than the Dominican Republic. I crave its sunlight, water, bright colors and warmth. The sultry air is both a mood elevator and a tranquilizer.

I stay at Casa de Campo because the attention to every detail of comfort and beauty is superlative. Every bite you eat is either locally grown or freshly flown in. It is possible to be either completely relaxed or be athletic and active—or find a balance between the two.

Mermaid mode

One of my passions is swimming, so you will find me in the water as often as possible. With goggles on, I see schools of gorgeous tropical fish. If I’m not in mermaid mode, I like to shop for local arts and crafts. I recommend a session with Keira, a gifted yoga instructor who will soon be in charge of the new spa. And I’m always game to get on a paddleboard.

Emilia and Pepe Fanjul are the friends who graciously enticed us down to the DR. Along with the Fanjuls, I see friends such as Carol Mack, Deborah Norville, Annette Tapert, Alexandra Kotur and Annabel Astor. Peggy Siegal is a DR regular. As far as celebrities go, everyone from the king of Spain to Beyoncé and Sean Combs have been spotted on the island.

Local finds

Gina Bambu, which is just outside La Romana, is a funky marketplace for locally made paintings and jewelry. In La Marina de Casa de Campo, there is the Jenny Polanco store, which sells pretty, painted papier-mâché items, such as the charming salt and pepper cellars that I use in the country. The papier-mâché objects are designed by Bibi Leon, who has an atelier in La Romana where young people from the town are employed as skilled assistants. The marina is also home to the Blasser boutique, a resource for lovely tailored shirts and dresses.

No vacation from fashion

I am an inveterate overpacker and am always searching for a better-designed suitcase—a distinctive-looking one that I can stuff to the bursting point without actually breaking it. Once I arrive at my destination, I like to have choices about what to wear, just as I do at home. ✦

Architect Richard Meier and interior designer Tony Ingrao announced their collaboration on the Howard Hughes Corporation’s $1 billion Ward Village Gateway Towers on Mamala Bay in Hawaii. Meier said his design was inspired by “the light and the views of the water” and quipped, “I now tell clients that if their project is not on the water, they can forget about it.” Ingrao, who is designing all the interior spaces, said he would be creating the most expensive penthouse in Hawaii for the massive project. Hughes CEO David Weinreb unveiled the elegant renderings at Jean-Georges’ Perry St. Restaurant. Meier’s business partner Michael Palladino said, “This development was designed not just to frame the view, but to increase the beauty of the landscape for both residents and the surrounding community.” Renowned architecture critic Paul Goldberger,, who is a consultant on the project, said that he and Meier held similar ideas about architecture. “It’s not just about protecting people from the elements. The Phil celebrated Chinese New Year with a gala concert featuring legendary cellist Yo-Yo Ma with sheng player Wu Tong and ghijak player Gulinaer Yiming. The evening, conducted by Long Yu, ushered in the Year of the Sheep with an inspirational program highlighting the music of China that included Chinese folk songs by vocalist Lei Jia. Concertgoers on Lincoln Center’s Plaza were greeted by a spectacular traditional Dragon Dance performed by the Nai-Ni Chen Dance Co. that wound its way into Avery Fisher Hall before the concert. The night’s chairmen were Angela Chen, Guoqing Chen, Chen Ming Liu, Agnes Hsu-Tang, Tang, Shirley Young and outgoing Board Oscar Tang Chair Gary W. Parr. The Starr International Foundation and Hennessy sponsored the evening, which raised $1.1 million.
