IF THE MEDIA landscape is one big fairy tale, then Tina Brown is undoubtedly one of our heroes. As an avid reader of Tatler from a young age, I loved Tina Brown’s mixture of high and low journalism, the incredible photographs and the daring headlines. Under her direction, Vanity Fair became required reading for anyone in the know, and even Talk was a whirring, whizzing cauldron of ideas, culture and celebrity. The Daily Beast was a bold and original website. One thing that must be said about Tina Brown is that she never lost the ability to entertain her audience. Now it’s her time to shine again with Tina Brown Live Media. Reading Chris Hodenfield’s article on her, I was unaware of her father’s background in film. Of course, now it all makes perfect sense, as Tina Brown is the ultimate producer. Reading the piece, it’s clear that her “theatrical journalism” is the perfect marriage for her top skills, namely knowing exactly what topics her spectators are fascinated by and putting the right

of the lesser-known stories from those plaques on the wall, and the results are worth reading about. In this issue we also have our annual A-List, which highlights New York City’s philanthropic and business leaders. The yardstick I always try and use is, who are the people in this city that I would get out of my pj’s to see? This is our collection of the most interesting and dynamic people in this city. AUTUMN AGENDA Our AVENUE friends share their upcoming plans for the season

H

ere we are, at the autumn bookend to my biannual question: What are you looking forward to this fall? The season is ripe with delights: football games (and the viewing parties that go along with them); wardrobe updates (bring on those cozy knits); more political debates, perhaps with some new faces (or hopefully fewer); dazzling stars coming to the Great White Way (James Earl Jones, Al Pacino, Clive Owen, and even Bruce Willis); new restaurants: Jonathan Waxman’s Jams redux, Dan Kluger’s solo project, and hopefully something on the Upper East Side! But you hear all too much from me—here are some fresh voices on what they are eagerly anticipating:

Owen Wilson: Football and rooting for the Cowboys! Harvey Weinstein: Andrew Lloyd Webber’s new musical, School of Rock—and no, it’s not mine. Jenna Lyons and Courtney Crangi (life partners, and answered as one): We grew up in Southern California and southern Florida (respectively), so we love the changing seasons. We are excited about apple picking with the kids and wearing sweaters! Daryl Roth: There are two things I’m very excited about this fall; one on Broadway and one on the West End. Gurney’s heartwarming play, Sylvia, starring Matthew Broderick, Annaleigh Ashford, Julie White, and Robert Sella, directed by Daniel Sullivan, will begin previews at the Cort Theater on October 2. This wonderful play will be especially appreciated by all of our dog-loving friends! And I’m happy that Kinky Boots has began performances in London at the Adelphi Theatre. Plus, I’m always happy to revel in the beautiful fall colors that envelop Central Park.

Susan Rockefeller: I always love the crisper temperatures and the sense of renewed purpose and energy that the autumn season brings upon us. I look forward to the launch of my film, Food for Thought, Food for Life on October 24 (available for all to watch), and also celebrating the bounty of the fall harvest; apples, peaches, Concord grapes and more! Ivana Lowell: I’m looking forward to smaller crowds in Sag Harbor, reading the first episodes of my television series Black Gold, (which is in production at BBC), and planning on getting properly stuck in my new book, which I have been rather neglecting due to having too much fun in the sun this summer. I’m also looking forward to sitting by the fire at the American Hotel and eating comfort foods without the guilt of having to look swimsuit ready! ✦

Casey Martinez recounts her blood-rushing experiences as a Black Hawk pilot, and explains how her new venture is helping veterans jumpstart their civilian lives.

I

really didn’t know what to expect from my meeting with Casey Martinez. As a former U.S. military Black Hawk pilot who has flown on multiple operational tours of Iraq, Afghanistan and other conflict areas, and was awarded three Bronze Stars for her service, I was a little unsure what to expect. So when a tall, super-fit brunette turns up at the Jade Bar in a turquoise dress and ready smile, I’m surprised at how soft-spoken and down-to-earth she is. For someone who has been responsible for keeping many men alive in combat, she’s appears very relaxed and easygoing. Martinez and I are meeting for a cocktail to talk about Capstar, a venture just starting in Manhattan that employs ex-servicemen and women as chauffeurs. Already a successful enterprise in the UK where the company just completed their 10,000th ride, Capstar is supported by Jaguar and Land Rover. Capstar chauffeurs will drive brand-new Jaguars starting September in Manhattan, with plans to expand to Washington, D.C., in 2016. Leaving her venture aside for the moment, I can’t help but being curious what impelled Casey to join the military. It turns out that joining the armed services was something of a family business for her. Everyone was in the armed forces: her father, grandfather, uncles and brother-in-law. Casey was one of three girls, but that didn’t stop her. At 17 she marched off to West Point, the same school her father attended, in order to compete against some of the most type-A people in the country. Then, because Martinez is just a tiny bit of an overachiever, she went into special operations aviation.

When I ask her what made her choose such a tough path, she says, “It is being told no, you can’t. It’s being told you’re not good enough, you’re not strong enough, you’re not fit enough. Whatever it is that you have chosen to do in your life, you don’t want to have a ceiling put on it and say that you can’t get to the next level because you’re a girl.” She is very matter-of-fact when it comes to describing her actual experience of being deployed. “What’s fun is that actually flying the aircraft is not so terribly difficult once you’ve mastered it. That’s not the hard part; the hard part is when you have five different radios blaring in your ear, and you’re trying to fly within two rotor disks (of the machine in front of you) and not crash and you’re trying to avoid enemy fire. You’re juggling all balls and you’re trying to stay one step ahead of what’s about to be thrown at you. When you can, it’s such a high.” She gently bats away my suggestion that she was a superhero for winning her three bronze stars. But I certainly think she’s pretty impressive. One of her tougher assignments was during the invasion of Iraq in 2003 when she was the air mission commander for her group of five helicopters and the radios all failed, meaning that they had to land with no ground communication. It sounds like it was a miserable time: everyone wore achingly hot chemical suits, and they flew between 8- to 10-hour days.

In spite of the hardships she endured, Casey smiles to herself, savoring the memory of her glory days. I have to say that looking at how happy she seems, I’m nearly ready to sign up for basic training myself, but I content myself with a sip of my watermelon mint martini. Surely, I say to her, it must have been tough to be a woman on this job. What about having to answer the call of nature among 40 guys when you are in the desert with nary a bush in sight? Martinez says that yes, it was complicated for her: if she needed to address

C O C K TA IL ON THE AVEN UE her personal needs she had to take off her flight suit, her armored vest and one other full body suit. If it was exasperating for her, Martinez does not seem unduly irritated by the realities of being a woman in combat. Although Martinez is clearly a competent soldier, she is also a very feminine one. She wore makeup when she was flying “to even out her skin tone,” she claims, though I can see nothing wrong with it. She never wore any jewelry, as it’s not allowed. It doesn’t sound like she would be bothered to wear earrings even if she could. For the first two months of the invasion of Iraq, they all slept in the back of the helicopters. I ask her if she encountered any sexism while she was in service, and she is careful with her next words: “I think it’s great in the US Army—they are really against sexual assault. However it is a big cultural problem in the military—you can say rape is bad, but there is still work to be done. When there are 85 percent men and 15 percent women, it’s a very slow process. It does change slowly over the years, but we have a long way to go.” Martinez has had her share of weird flirty comments from her soldiers and one

commander, who had the temerity when she was leaving active service to say that she was “best-dressed” and threw the best party because she had once organized a Christmas dinner. This is after three tours of duty where she was away from family and friends for nearly a year each time, flying in dangerous and exhausting conditions. I sense there is more to this story, but Martinez politely steers the conversation back to how happy she is to be using her expertise to help veterans, many of whom joined up after 9/11. Martinez always asks the candidates why they joined the army, and frequently the answer is that they lost a family member in 9/11 or were somehow affected by the tragedy. “I think veterans really struggle when they get out. In the military they’ve been given a high level of responsibility, and to turn around and come home and not be able to translate that to their employers when they’re being considered for jobs makes them feel isolated.” All the drivers are screened by a medical doctor for PTSD before they get hired. Martinez assures me that the drivers are incredibly disciplined and reliable. “Most of the

guys we hire are capable of doing something more, and they want to work with people who understand how they got to where they are.” Capstar aims to help the vets transition from being drivers and hopefully move up to middle management once they’ve expanded. Their prices sound competitive with other top-shelf limo companies of the same caliber: $165 to JFK, $165 to Newark and $145 to LaGuardia. It’s $95 an hour with a two hour booking. Martinez knows exactly why she took this job: she had great offers from J.P. Morgan and Goldman Sachs on the table, but she walked away from them. “There is social enterprise and depth to what we do. I believe in what we’re doing, and it’s so easy to be passionate about this company when you’re helping other veterans.” Our drinks are finished, and as we walk to the door I’m on such a high from meeting this amazing person. If they ever decide to recast G.I. Jane, I think they should use Martinez as the role model. She is one action figure I would definitely buy for my sons. ✦ capstarchauffeurs.com

In 1893, a reporter for The New York Times stood near the park’s East Drive and watched in amazement as “hundreds of society’s best rigs” clattered past, these “splendid turnouts” meeting a “public demand for quality in horses and perfection in vehicles.” The following driving season, very high traps on carriages came into vogue, assuring, as the Times noted, that “the owner of the very latest thing for use in the parks or on the country roads will, perforce, look down upon the commoner.” For those aspiring to such heights of equine fashion, one of the top shopping destinations was Van Tassell & Kearney, a carriage emporium and horse auction center at 130-132 East 13th Street, a five-story structure adorned with terra-cotta castings of horseshoes, riding crops and spherical motifs reminiscent of carriage wheels (the building survives today). Catering to the upper crust was good business, and in 1903–1904, shortly after the newly founded Ladies’ Four-in-Hand Driving Club began meeting at the Colony Club, Van Tassell & Kearney expanded their facilities with the construction of a horse auction mart at 126-128 East 13th Street, adjoining their old building. Elegantly utilitarian, the new structure, designed by Jardine, Kent & Jardine, was a grand Beaux Arts barn with a curved cornice and a red-brick façade enlivened by ornamental limestone flourishes. A great central window, surrounded by a coved limestone arch, admitted generous quantities of light into the open interior, which featured balconies from which prospective buyers could view the parade of horses in the auction ring below. The building was recently put on the market for $16,750,000 with James P. Nelson and Matthew Nickerson of Cushman & Wakefield, the aftermath of a local preservation campaign that averted the structure’s planned demolition for replacement by a seven-story condo. “It was built as a horse auction mart for the Vanderbilts 126-128 East 13th Street, around 1910 and the Delanos and the Belmonts, and as far as we know it’s the last surviving horse auction mart building in the city,” said Andrew Berman, executive director of the Greenwich Village Society for Historic Preservation, which spearheaded the structure’s rescue. The building was landmarked in 2012 and is currently being leased by a dance center, the latest iteration in the structure’s rich and varied history. After horses gave way to cars as the favored mode of transport in the early 20th century, the former or all the controversy surrounding Mayor de Blasio’s auction barn was used by a candy manufacturer, according to a city proposed ban of horse-drawn carriages from Central Park, landmarks report, and then by the Delehanty Institute of Civil Service, the passengers who climb aboard the quaint conveyances which prepared prospective firefighters and policemen for civil nowadays are far more often tourists than New Yorkers, service exams. “The building has these three distinctive layers of history,” Mr. Berman said. “Taken together, they really reflect the arc of change in the life of New York City, but particularly of Lower Manhattan, across the 20th century.” The opening of the Van Tassell and Kearney Auction Mart in 1904 provided society with a prime new show ring for the buying and selling of horses and polo ponies of distinction. That fall, when Foxhall P. Keene placed a selection of American-bred and imported hunters under the auction hammer, the sale was notable as much for the posh crowd it attracted as for the loftiness of its prices.

“Nearly all the prominent clubs in this city, Boston, and Philadelphia were represented, while the women, who outnumbered the men by two to one in the reserved seats in the balcony . . . were attired in dainty evening costumes and their escorts were in the regulation evening dress,” the Times noted. “With the exception of the horses, as they were led up to the auctioneer’s block, and the knot of horsey men grouped around the selling ring, one might easily have imagined he was at some fashionable entertainment.” The following year, twenty-two head of coach horses belonging to Alfred G. Vander-

bilt, including a team said to be the best four ever driven together in a public coach, attracted “a representative jot of buyers of high-class horseflesh,” The New-York Tribune reported. At a carriage sale a month later, the auction house was thronged with “a distinguished crowd” of at least 2,000 people, “including many handsomely gowned women,” the paper noted. “The coaches and opera ’buses and victorias were scattered in profusion everywhere and made a brilliant showing.” Of special note among the items auctioned was a black-and-red pony coach, originally built in Paris for James Gordon Bennett, publisher of The New York Herald. Before long, however, the horse-and-carriage business began to hear the rumble of the motor car coming up fast behind it. In 1908, Ford popularized the automobile with the introduction of the Model T, and within two years pressure from the auto industry compelled many leading carriage builders to dispose of their large supply, leaving Van Tassell & Kearney with the largest stock of new carriages in the city. For a while, the firm hung tough with the horse and carriage, even as its competitors

E DIF IC E C O MPLE X pulled out of the business and stables around town were converted into garages. Sometimes the auction house even profited from the cannibalization of its own industry. In 1916, Van Tassell & Kearney helped dismantle a signature component of the horse era in New York when it auctioned off the entire stock and equipment of the esteemed Knickerbocker Stables on West 54th Street. “The building is about to be converted into a fireproof Garage,” explained an ad in the Times, “and every horse, vehicle, set of harness, and everything else used in . . . this high-class stable must be disposed of.” When Van Tassell & Kearney finally bowed to the inevitable and got into the “horseless carriage” business themselves, they did so only gradually, with one hoof still in the past. In 1916 and 1917, the firm took out unprepossessing little confidential ads in the Times to announce car auctions, even as they were still buying big display ads in the trade magazine Bit and Spur to trumpet their 50-year tradition of Tuesday and Friday horse-and-carriage auctions.

Indeed, the horsey set did not abandon its customs overnight, and exceptional animals could still turn out an elite crowd. “The special sale of Miss Constance Vauclain’s harness and saddle horses at Van Tassell & Kearney’s on Wednesday afternoon was worthy of being chronicled as a society event,” The Saddle and Show Horse Chronicle declared in 1917, “so many were the men and women of social prominence who occupied chairs in the balcony or mixed with the horsemen surrounding the auction box.” The event proved to be something of a last gasp. The following year, Van Tassell & Kearney took a big step towards auctioning itself right out of existence when it put on the block its prodigious stock of over 500 fine carriages. Although the firm continued auctioning cars into the 1920’s, its high-class days were in the rear-view mirror. By the late 1930’s, the auction-mart building was being used by the Delehanty Institute, which reconfigured the interior for classrooms. In 1978, Mr. Stella bought the structure and a low-rise mixed-use building

at 123 East 12th Street, which had also been built by Van Tassell & Kearney. The two structures were attached, allowing the artist to walk directly from his home on 12th Street to his studio on 13th, according to Joe Sabbagh, the chief executive of Ultimate Realty, which bought both buildings from Mr. Stella for $10 million in 2005. The former auction mart is currently occupied by the Peridance Capezio Center on a lease that runs until 2028 with a renewal option. Before opening in 2009, Peridance undertook a major renovation of the building’s interior to create six dance studios, the 142-seat Salvatore Capezio Theater, a Capezio dancewear boutique, and a café. The work included a 14-foot excavation to allow for basement studios. “At about ten feet down we ran across some structures which looked a bit like corridors made out of brick,” said Igal Perry, the artistic director of Peridance. “It may have been some way of walking horses underneath before bringing them to the top for auctions.” ✦

S

he talks like a woman in a great hurry. There is a hardly a pause as she rips through her thoughts. If she drops a word now, it’s only to get the well-formed sentences out even faster. When you meet Tina Brown, there is the familiar shock of blond hair, gleaming smile and glowing cheekbones, but then the eyes come into view—piercing blue eyes that survey the company at her table. She seems to be asking, What’s the story here? Anyone who meets her knows immediately they’ve met a particularly British force of nature. And realizing this answers the first question any New Yorker is likely to have about her: What is the source of her power? How did she become the queen of journalism (if you don’t count Oprah)? How did she persuade the media barons to put so much faith and capital in her ventures? Well, it’s clear. The air crackles around her. After the warm handshake, the engaging glint in the eye and the little witticism that reveals she has already studied up on you, she is down to cases with an almost military sense of authority. She is and continues to prove that she is a great leader. Tina Brown is presently in the midst of her umpteenth regeneration (the word “reinvention” seems so lacking here) as boss leader of Tina Brown Live Media. The brightest production in this enterprise is Women in the World, a series of stage events that presents women of heroic achievement, both celebrated and unknown. It has grown to the point of packing Lincoln Center, all 2,500 seats, with people who want to share the energy of these risk takers. And, of course, to also share Ms. Brown’s toboggan-ride energy. Seizing the storyline, she warns you right off that these are not “conferences,” which she characterizes as “two men and a glass of water” or “ankles across the stage.” She is after a different sort of presentation. “Theatrical journalism,” she calls it. She greets you in the courtyard of a ground-level duplex on East 57th Street and invites you in for a lunch of kale salad. There are libraries aplenty here, which is what happens when one editor marries another, i.e., famed newspaper and book editor Sir Harold Evans. (In the guest bathroom is a framed newspaper spread covering their wedding party with the blaring headline VANITY FAIR.) Her morning has been filled with the usual sort of hectic, slam-bang scheduling that makes up the days of her life. Incredible. Amazing. Extraordinary. These three superlatives fall like a fireworks display throughout her conversation. She rescued a failing Vanity Fair. From there to Condé Nast’s New Yorker for another overhaul with her guiding mantra: Show it off, get it talked about. Then Talk magazine with Harvey Weinstein, which, like its principals, was both combustible and noteworthy. “Tina Brown has a pathological level of high energy,” says Holly Peterson who worked as the editor-at-large at Talk magazine. “It’s like combining the Tasmanian Devil with Albert Einstein. She really taught me how not to be pedestrian.” Talk fell victim, Brown explains, of the business downturn that followed 9/11. She recovered by hosting a weekly talk show on CNBC called Topic A with Tina Brown; it was not well positioned for good ratings. She wrote a book about another British media star in The Diana Chronicles.

he book refers to the late princess having a “talent for recruitment,” i.e., she could win the staff over to her side (to Charles’ chagrin), but the phrase echoes Tina’s own obsessive drive to find talented people—and backers. Her next big venture proved to be a storm-tossed sea. Allied with media mogul Barry Diller, she oversaw the launch of an intriguing news and feature website, The Daily Beast, in 2008. But things went very wrong two years later when it was merged with the faltering, money-losing Newsweek magazine and came up a very costly cropper. While the website continues, she departed in 2013 with intentions of writing her own biography, called Media Beast, perhaps to hit the stands next year. Diller never said a word against her, letting her have control of one of his IAC ventures, Women in the World. She started out with the idea of being a playwright. And why not? Her father, George Brown, was a film producer, and her mother, Bettina, worked as an assistant to Laurence Olivier. The family house in the little town of Little Marlow, in the country just west of London, entertained a riotous mix of guests, where comedian Benny Hill would be crashing into Dame Rebecca West. “Our house was a lot of fun. My father was enormously gregarious. It’s probably where I got some of my enjoyment of entertaining. My mother loved it, too. And they would just throw in all these people. Their attitude was, ‘Have ’em in all over, have a giant buffet by the French windows and let all hell break loose.’ And it’s kind of stayed with me to this day. It’s how I do things.”

Her mother was a character, “a wonderful writer. She was wicked and funny and the center of the house, you know. We were very close friends. She had great style. And we were the most incongruous mother and daughter. “When my mother would show up at my school, all the other mothers would be there in there in their pearls and cashmere twinsets and bouffant hair. There’s my mother with huge, colorful earrings and just very operatic. “I did a DNA test once as joke and found I had some Iraqi genes. And I wondered if that’s what my mother had, because she looked so unlike everyone else in the family. Here we were all blond and she was this Maria Callas type, very tall. Somebody at some point in her family once had a romantic interest, shall we say, because she didn’t look like anybody else.” Tina’s rebellious instincts got her thrown out of three posh boarding schools, but she got into Oxford at age 17 and graduated with a degree in English literature. While she actually got a few of her early plays produced, it was her work on the college literary magazine, Isis, that kickstarted her fame. If there were money in the plays, she says, she might have continued. But there was income in the journalism.

er childhood had given her a taste of what might be called privileged access. Journalism’s wide entrée to normally closed situations was a natural fit. “It gives you a license to just walk in and be curious,” she notes with a bright smile. She wrote sizzling profiles, formed alliances, got to be known, and when she was still a bright young thing had bylines in the New Statesman, Punch, and the Sunday Times, the editor of which, Sir Harold Evans, became her husband. They would go on to have two children, who are now in their twenties. When Tina was 25, she was put in charge of an almost moribund little society sheet called Tatler, but she quickly injected enough semi-naughty scandal that people had to know what would be revealed next. “High-low” journalism, it was called. Circulation shot up, and in a few years would come the invitation to helm Vanity Fair, she built the circulation from 250,000 to 1.2 million. The Tatler experience taught her that she had a knack for creating a team. “I have always been enormously collaborative. I think the reason I’ve always had good teams is that I cast them like a play. ‘This person is brilliant at developing story ideas, then that person’s partner is the one who could make sure it gets done.”’ She got to put into motion what she observed growing up. “A producer is always looking for his next story. My father’s question was always, ‘Would that make a good movie?’ He always tended to look at life as material. And I was always keenly aware of the idea of getting it done. It’s one thing to have the taste and the material, but can you get it done? You don’t just admire this book or play, how do you get it on the screen? “So I’m very obsessively craft- and profession-oriented, actually. I’m very skeptical of people who talk about things and this and that. But it’s all about the details, the follow-up, the perfectionism and the obsession not to take anything that isn’t good.” It began with the Vital Voices Democracy Initiative, a nonprofit established in 1997 by Hillary Clinton and Madeleine Albright with the task of teaching skills and entrepreneurship to women around the world. “I would go to these retreats and see incredible women from Egypt do extraordinary things. The women they mentor are emerging as leaders. I thought they ought to be onstage, on TV. That’s how it started. I found a sponsor who was enthused enough. For some reason, I was so energized, he just bought in!” Her life story. The Women in the World stage productions benefit enormously from having The New York Times as partners, supplying production and promotion expertise, not to mention a glorious portion of office space in midtown Manhattan for her staff of 17. And they’ve gained a raft of sponsorships, which contribute about 90 percent of its funding. Toyota, one of the key sponsors, backs the Mothers of Invention grant, having nothing to do with Frank Zappa but instead searching out women who have created “something that has a social efficacy out of her own mind and brain. One of my favorites last year was Doniece Sandoval, who decided she wanted to do something about the homeless in San Francisco. She interviewed the homeless on the street and thought they would mention food. But one thing they said over and over and over again was they just wanted to be clean: “I feel so dirty all the time.” When Sandoval heard that the city was scrapping old buses, she made a deal to get hold of some and covert them into mobile shower stalls called Lava Mae. So, bingo, Toyota is there with a $50,000 Mothers grant and a year’s worth of promotional help. In the beginning there was a nonprofit side to Woman in the World, but that was abandoned in favor of apportioning funds straight to Vital Voices. Thus she can concentrate on the high-powered shows. “What I’m doing now is what I did on the page—from the page to the stage, if you like. The pacing, the intensity of it, the mix of it is more like a show or a magazine than it is about a

conference. It’s about narrative and about intensity and about mix. So, for instance, you would go from like opening night last year we had the incredibly powerful narrative of a woman whose daughter had gone to jihad in Syria. Incredibly moving Somali woman. From there we went to an Indian movie star, Aamir Khan, whom we asked to do it because his TV show in India has 500 million viewers and really champions women and breaks taboos, and I really wanted to show a man who does that. Then we went to an incredibly moving dialogue between an Israeli woman and a Palestinian woman whose boys had each been killed by snipers, and they bonded over the peace process. Then we ended with Meryl Streep and Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy and interviewed by Jon Stewart about the power of film.” All of this is presented with lightning-round speed. Solemn introductions have been replaced by high-energy, four-minute videos on the next speaker. “The audience is thinking, ‘Well, I came here to see Helen Mirren talk about the queen and then there’s this thing on Iraqi refugees, I’ll make my calls then.’ So Helen Mirren is marvelous, fabulous, funny, and as soon as she’s finished, boom, you’re into a video of this powerful scene of an Iraqi MP dressing down the parliamentary body: ‘Why have you forsaken us?!’ It’s incredibly powerful stuff. And you’re thinking, ‘Omigod, I better see this.’ So we keep them there. “It’s like classic TV programming, I suppose. We have got it down, I think.” What about the speaking fees for people like Angelina Jolie and Condoleezza Rice? “No fees. They come because they want to. And they want to because it’s journalistic. Meryl Streep has come every year for six years. She does very little like that, but she understands. It’s very much a journalistic process of genuine inquiry. Jon Stewart has been twice now. The first time he ran a fantastic conversation with all these fiery women from the Arab Spring.”

rown’s ability to engage other powerful women is not surprising to Peterson. “What’s not known is that she’s a real girl’s girl. She has a whole posse of women friends. She loves to laugh and loves to have girl’s night. And she’ll buy you the most amazing pair of shoes for your baby shower, because she knows that’s all you really want anyway. She really knows how to be a girl.” The shows will go round the world. They had a nerve-wracking experience in São Paulo, but London and New Delhi went off well. Mexico will likely be part of the rota. She wants to provide the public, she says, with role models. In doing so, she has come, she knows, full circle, back to the stage. She calls the events journalism, but these are of course theatrical events, where proximity to amazing humans gives one a shivering frisson of life’s possibilities. As her stage efforts gain speed, she will be repeating in January a forum she produced in 2014 called the American Justice Summit, which she produced in partnership with the John Jay College of Criminal Justice. “I’ve always been fascinated by criminal justice,” she says, acknowledging her prescience now that the entire nation is riveted by the aftermath of Ferguson, Missouri. “On one panel was a woman whose mother had been murdered, a formerly incarcerated robber who’d been in prison for seven years, and a judge—a hard-ass judge who has certainly sent people to death row. It was fantastic. You cast the panel and say, ‘I hope they argue.’ And they really did!” The first summit fetched an overflow crowd of 600. She sees expanding hugely. And now with a crack team of producers, newspeople and talent wranglers shepherding these events, she will probably be finding events to fill Yankee Stadium someday. “What she’s doing with the conferences is the height of her abilities and genius. Anyone can get a sponsor and put on a conference, but the truth is that most of the time those panels are boring,” says Peterson. “The way Tina produces a conference is that she’s trying to change the world. What she’s done behind the scenes to help women and girls, and connect people, and put leaders with opinion makers, policy wonks with money people, and with NGO people on the ground, it’s just extraordinary. She’s combining her convening power with her editorial genius to really affect policy.” All this gives her one more lively chapter in her life as “chronicler of the zeitgeist.” The word “zeitgeist” shows up so often in stories about her, it’s worth wondering if the word will one day appear on her tombstone. She laughs at the mordant thought and fires back, “‘Former queen of buzz,’ something like that. I see the word ‘buzz’ a lot, as if ‘buzz’ were somehow adjacent to ‘disreputable,’ right? Buzz is just people talking about what you’ve published. That’s what you want, isn’t it? Nobody wants to publish into silence.” Silence and Tina Brown? The concept just doesn’t compute. ✦

Billions of dollars, generations of prestige, and invaluable contributions to education, science, and the arts piece together to make the city’s landmark institutions best in the world. hanks to an unprecedented $200 million donation, the NYU Medical Center now proudly bears the name of Kenneth Langone and his wife Elaine. Best known for co-founding mega-retailer The Home Depot, Langone—estimated by Forbes to be worth a cool $2.5 billion—is no stranger to sweeping philanthropic gestures. His 2008 medical center donation came on the heels of a $6.5 million endowment to the NYU Stern School of Business, of which Langone is an alumnus. He currently serves as Chair of the hospital’s Board of Trustees.

I

t’s now regarded as one of, if not the, finest performing arts schools in the world, and the brothers Tisch made it so. The NYU college was already established at the university in the mid-1960s, but it didn’t truly rise to prominence until Laurence A. and Preston Robert Tisch donated the $7.5 million donation that allowed the purchase and renovation of the school’s main building. Now a midtown stalwart, the 721 Broadway location houses most of the school’s programs. Thanks to state-of-the art facilities and a cutting-edge curriculum, the school boasts a lion’s share of illustrious attendees including Alec Baldwin, Andy Samberg, Lady Gaga, Elizabeth Olsen, James Franco, Martin Scorsese, and Bryce Dallas Howard.

t was Bronfman family patriarch Edgar, Sr. for which the university’s Jewish Student Center is named, due in large part to an undisclosed but undoubtedly handsome sum donated by the Seagram’s heir and eventual president. Though the Center’s Tenth Street brownstone was only acquired in the 1990s, its now-famous facade is the work of Lockwood De Forest, who founded Associated Artists along with Candace Wheeler and Louis Comfort Tiffany in 1879. The idea for the Center’s ornate teak exterior was the result of De Forest’s wedding trip to India, where he was awestruck by the intricacies of the country’s buildings. The Bronfman Center is now a campus favorite, housing an extensive library and art collection. The Center’s signature event, Shabbat for 2000, is the largest Shabbat dinner in New York City. he’s most notable for her retail brand, but Lillian Vernon was a business powerhouse long before her ubiquitous catalogues. Her corporation was the female-founded company to be traded by the American Stock Exchange, a major moment for businesswomen in America. She served on the NYU board for years before donating an undisclosed sum for the creation of the house that would hold the University’s creative writing program and literary salons. Both fledgling and established writers are abound at the House, which hosts slew of notable writers-in-residence every year. Jonathan Safran Foer, bestselling author of Everything Is Illuminated and Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close is in residence at the House along with his former professor, literary powerhouse Joyce Carol Oates. While in residence, the authors teach and mentor alongside the program’s host of prominent faculty members, which includes Booker Prize nominee Zadie Smith.

hough she herself never sought higher education, silver screen star and Paramount Studios crown jewel Paulette Goddard made headlines when she bequeathed a jaw-dropping $20 million donation to New York University, which, in turn, built a residence hall in her honor. Regarded for both her philanthropic nature and larger-than-life escapades, the 40s-era star was one of the most famous actresses of her time, snagging an Academy Award nomination and, for a time, Charlie Chaplin.

ome of the world’s most renowned musicians have performed (and made history) within the walls of this midtown Manhattan concert venue. Originally called “Music Hall” upon its opening in 1891, the building—now a longstanding National Historic Landmark—was officially renamed during the 1894-1895 season in honor of its benefactor, Andrew Carnegie. A self-made billionaire, and one of the most influential philanthropists of his time, the ScottishAmerican industrialist earned a fortune from revolutionizing steel production in the U.S. and shared his wealth with a number of charities and institutions across the globe, dedicating more than $1 million to build Carnegie Hall. Take a close look at the front of the building today, and you’ll find the words, “Music Hall founded by Andrew Carnegie” still inscribed above the marquee.

H

ome to Carnegie Hall’s historical archives, special exhibits, and most treasured memorabilia (including one of Benny Goodman’s clarinets and a sequined jacket owned by Judy Garland) is the Rose Museum—a small but vast collection located on the second floor of the institution and made possible by Elihu Rose and his wife, Susan, who are among one of the most prominent real estate families in New York. he smallest and most intimate performance space in Carnegie Hall is a 268seat theatre that bears the name of financier Sanford I. Weill and his wife, Joan. For more than 24 years, Sanford, also known to many as “Sandy”, was notably the Chairman of the institution, and currently serves as its President—a position that was previously held by his mentor, the late Isaac Stern. Over time, the Weills have donated millions to the Hall and launched the Weill Music Institute, offering a wide range of music and education programs to the public.

nside the Isaac Stern Auditorium is a stage that holds the namesake of Ronald O. Perelman in recognition of his $20 million gift to Carnegie Hall in 2006. The American business investor is also an avid drummer that has played alongside the Beach Boys and Rod Stewart. With his support, a number of its educational and artistic initiatives have flourished, including music programs for elementary and secondary students in New York City.

t one point in time, Carnegie Hall came close to being demolished and was set to turn into a 44-story fire-engine red office skyscraper, before violinist Isaac Stern came to the rescue. The building was put up for commercial sale due to financial shortage after their primary tenant, the New York Philharmonic, announced plans to move to the then soon-to-be-built Lincoln Center. Striving to save the Hall, Stern spearheaded a campaign that led to a special state legislation in 1960, and New York City bought the concert venue for $5 million—a sweet victory that had also earned him the title as the first President of Carnegie Hall. In 1997, the largest performance space in the complex (originally known as the “Main Hall”) was renamed to “Stern Auditorium” in honor of his efforts.

arold Uris was a prominent real estate developer and active philanthropist in the 20th Century. He joined forces with his father and brother to develop residential real estate, and then expanded into commercial after WWII. Around that time, Uris Brothers became the largest private developer in New York, and they worked frequently with renowned architect Emery Roth. Harold and wife Ruth’s involvement with the Metropolitan Museum began in 1956, when Harold and brother Percy set up the Uris Brothers Foundation. It was a 1983 donation, one year after Harold’s death, of $10 million that established the Ruth and Harold D. Uris Center for Education at the Met. Renovated again in 2007, the Center is a state-of-the-art resource hub for students, teachers, families, scholars and any curious visitors to learn, study and interact with the museum, its galleries and its holdings. In 1998, the Uris Brothers Foundation was liquidated and the Met was the beneficiary of another $10 million donation.

ully unsurpassed in its sheer number of works, the Leonard Lauder Collection stands alone as the greatest collection of Cubism art in the world. The son of cosmetics empress Estée Lauder and a powerful businessman in his own right, Lauder spent decades acquiring what would soon be the largest library of Cubism works anywhere. Lauder is a longtime supporter of the arts, making headlines after endowing an impressive $22 million to the Met and another $131 million to the Whitney. In 2013, his decision to donate 81 pieces of Cubist art to the Met—including including 34 works by Pablo Picasso—was was lauded as one of the most important donations in history. The collection is valued at over a billion dollars.

homas J. Watson was a brilliant businessman, best known for serving as the chairman of IBM from 1914 until his death in 1956. He led IBM through massive growth and guided it into the profitable organization that it remains today. He was also socially and politically regarded; often referred to as President Roosevelt’s unofficial ambassador in New York and called upon to entertain heads of state here. His motto was “Think”—which still remains a part of IBM’s culture; every employee carries a “Think” notebook to write down inspirations and there is a monthly internal magazine under Thomas J. that name. Appropriately Watson named after a man who valued thinking, the Thomas J. Watson Library at the Met is the institution’s main research library. The library was established in 1870 and was later named after Watson after he funded the current building. Watson also was a trustee of the Met from 1936 to 1956 and endowed a book purchase fund. The Watson family also endowed the Arthur K. Watson Chief Librarian position and the funding of early automation projects by daughter Helen Watson Buckner.

ntricately carved staircases, exact replicas of Eighteenth Century English rooms, and centuries-old timepieces fill the small but prominent Annie Laurie Aitken galley within the Met. The gallery itself is notable for its European sculpture and decorative arts, while its namesake was a socialite-turned-artist in the 1930s and 40s. Aitken was first married to George Crawford, founder and chairman of Columbia Gas & Electric. He was significantly older than his wife, and when he died in 1935, he left Annie Laurie and their only daughter a $100 million fortune. Though Annie Laurie’s later life was punctured by scandal and heartbreak after her son-inlaw was charged and later acquitted of her socialite daughter’s attempted murder, her second marriage to sculptor Russell B. Aitken that inspired her own love for sculpting. The Annie Laurie Aitken Charitable Trust donated several sizable gifts to the Met, which in turn gave Annie Laurie’s name a place of honor. A

lmost as well known for his art collection and tenure as museum board chairman as he was for heading global finance service Lehman Brothers, Robert Lehman was an obvious choice for a dedicated wing after his eponymous foundation donated close to 3,000 works from his private collection to the Met after his death in 1969. Lehman’s collection was staggeringly expansive, the result of six decades of acquisition and curation after his father first started it in 1911. His first major art world recognition came in 1957 when he exhibited close to 300 pieces from the collection at a private show at the Louvre’s Musée de l’Orangerie. He was the first private collector from America to have the honor, a legacy that’s well preserved today thanks to the Met’s Robert Lehman Wing. Lehman’s collection was centered around Renaissance paintings, and featured an assortment of paintings by masters including Botticelli, Rembrandt, and Dürer. ✦

hey were preened packs of high-heel-wearing Bugaboo pushers crossing Fifth Avenue in stilettos. They were the mommy clique who “all bonded in Lamaze” or prego yoga or while ordering custom crib linens and bumpers. They were chatting about what time was “wheels up” for NetJets to Aspen and how “the traffic is a bitch to Teterboro.” I was nine months pregnant in 99-degree weather. My swollen feet were the size of the Intrepid, with pigs-in-blanket toes shoved into tragic flip-flops. My skinny single friends were all having sexy, balmy summers, dancing on tables at Sunset Beach at Shelter Island in the Hamptons, or at Bungalow 8 in New York City. I was a beached whale, except all alone without the crowd of Greenpeace supporters whom beached whales usually garner. They asked when I was scheduling an elective C-section. Uh . . . what? Three other knocked-up ladies confronted me in a semicircle when they heard about my barbaric plan to give birth via vag like a coconut-cracking savage. “You absolutely must get a Cesarean. It’s all planned and you get a blowout and mani and it’s just slice ’n’ dice!” Often giving birth, like everything else on the Upper East Side, is a matter of “staffing up” and getting the “right” people, process and look. After all, you want to look fierce in that postsurgery Instagram. “Believe me,” said another leaning in, conspiratorially. “Your husband will thank you for going C. Mine sure did,” followed by a my-vagina-is-tighter-than-yours-you-debased-mammal wink. Newsflash: peer pressure works. I immediately inquired with my gyno, who shut the discussion down right away, saying she only did emergency C-sections, unlike some of her colleagues, the “society” OBs who would literally cut around a Duke basketball game or a trip to Eden Roc. I told her some women I knew reacted as if delivering through the birth canal was like standing in a forest and shitting out your baby like a caveperson. My gyno laughed and told me to get used to hearing many opinions about pretty much everything from now on for the next 20 years. She was right. People hated the name Sadie and thought it was “too old lady” (I prefer “Ellis Island chic”). People told me how to nurse, how to swaddle, how to babyproof, how to get my baby walking earlier, how to guarantee a Mozart, an Einstein, the works. I also was depressed because after years of being told I was smart, I felt like a complete pointy-capped dunce. Not all women have this, but I certainly was a victim of what I call “placenta brain.” I would literally walk into a room and forget what I went in for, like my great-grandma. I was crying during Volvo commercials. When the one with the mom who turns on the ass warmer for her ice-skater daughter who fell on the rink came on, it was Niagara Falls.

W

hen Sadie began walking, I signed up for a baby activity class, not knowing a soul. When I first wheeled in with my shitty stroller, I felt like it was middle school all over again, with people l ooking each other over, and worse, looking each other’s kids over. I smiled and was friendly but felt oddly shy, even though I’m the least shy person on the planet. But I didn’t have a wingman and clearly didn’t have all the proper gear or lingo or locavore seed-to-anus organic baby snacks. The teacher came in and sat down cross-legged and asked everyone to sit in a circle. Sadie was running around and I patted the floor next to me and said, “Sadie, sweetie, can you come sit down Indian-style?” Vinyl record scratch. It wasn’t even crickets: it was gasps.

My eyes met two HORRFIED-looking ladies who were whispering while looking at me. “What?” I asked, nervous. “Um, no, it’s fine, I mean, it’s just—no one says Indian-style anymore. You’re supposed to say crisscross applesauce.” Oh. This sounds melodramatic, but because of A) extreme sleep deprivation, and B) the Godfather day of my period, which made my bedsheets look like the flag of Japan, I was fighting back tears. I smiled and did the class with a lump in my throat, but inside I wanted to scream and cry. FUCKING CRISSCROSS APPLESAUCE?! ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME?! I hated these people. They all dressed the same, with white skinny jeans and Tory Burch Reva logo flats and gourmonster baby food and boring conversations about the help (their staff, not the book.) I loathed moms. I was an outcast. What to do?

W

ell, the answer was: write about it. My husband encouraged me to jot down the ridic encounters I regaled him with, and I started adding little entries for my book, which became Momzillas, a story about a loner mom in New York City. It wound up being

published in 14 languages, and I still get ecstatic when new moms email me, saying how they felt understood through the travails of “Hannah,” who was basically me but by way of a red state, to further heighten the alienation I already felt, despite being a New York native. NBC bought the book and I was euphoric—hopefully I could bring this world to television in a way that would lend comfort to women who also felt the same way. Two more nuggets followed, Ivy and Fletch, and I was lambasted after both births because I didn’t nurse. I hated breastfeeding. I nursed Sadie and it killed, complete with bleeding nips, so I threw in the burp cloth after I almost burned down the house sterilizing the Frankenstein pump in a boiled-down pot of water—all three kids are fine, by the way. There’s something so weirdo and entitled about people who just barrel in with their two cents. I wanted to build a fortress around my family out of all the piles of copper people chucked my way and shield ourselves from the white noise of every idiot who considered herself an expert.

here was the mom who told me she thought it was “wildly inappropriate” that I brought my 12-year old to a movie about a transgender woman. I told her it was really just about love and being yourself. I got a snort and an eye roll in reply. There was a girl who teased Sadie for not having a country house or stables, and her mother emailed me furious after Sadie replied, “I don’t care, I hate horses anyway.” There are mommy jihads over the dumbest shit. It never ends. I mine material every day. Those early years are not a distant memory, and I wanted to explore that blurry time further, and fan the haze away with laughter and observations. The tweens wanting to dress like hookers, children’s

Tourette’s-esque lack of an edit button (“Mom, why is your butt so jiggly?”), plus the sugar wars, the cupcake hate mail pushing for healthier snacks, the nursing Nazis, the organic brigade, the whole spectrum of Type A mom world. Now I get to lampoon it all in Odd Mom Out, a halfhour comedy. Internally called “Larry David in Upper East Side Mom World,” our show, Bravo’s first scripted comedy, is a satirical peek into the over-the-top world of glamorous “stay-at-home” moms who don’t even stay at home but just go to luncheons and dress for each other while half of Manila is in their penthouses with their four children (BTW, four is the new three). There are the types who use charitable causes to promote themselves socially, the accessories “designers” who all buy from each other’s trunk shows in hotel suites to distract their egos from hedge-fund husbands shtupping the secretary, the lavish benefits and the OTT toddler birthday party circuit with engraved invitations. My mother used to joke, “A socialite is the opposite of a social heavy,” mentioning women who would “go to the opening of an envelope.” She had obligations for my dad’s job but was always making our dinners herself. I remember her standing in a pink and white ballgown with red oven mitts, taking our lamb chops out of the oven. She would always rather be home in her pajamas with us. I, on the other hand, needed a goddamn break. I felt like the hours between five and seven p.m. made me want to Yahoo! “How+To+Rope+A+Noose,” and I would’ve loved to be going to some bash. But while the rest of the world was at happy hour I was los-

ing m’shit in Crappy Hour. I would crack open the Pinot Noir at 4:59 and . . . well, I know this sounds alcoholicky, but I couldn’t’ve gotten through those years without my vino. I rarely even poured a second glass, but I practically shook as I removed the cork until I could guzzle that first one. Granted, I was never passed out on the floor with an empty bottle, but my mom was way calmer and less frazzled somehow, even sans Pinot. These days I have friends who are always up for a Tots ’n’ Tonic kiddie dinner for the small fry and Bellinis for us, but I didn’t have that in the lonely diaper days when I craved that kind of company the most.

ears passed. Momzillas never got made, and I realized from watching network television that even if it had, it never would’ve had the chutzpah and soul I’d’ve wanted. I wound up writing my first essay collection called Sometimes I Feel Like a Nut, which is the first nonfiction book I did, and it really crystalized what would become the vice of the TV show I wanted to make. When I met with the fabulous Andy Cohen and the goddess Lara Spotts at Bravo, we were exploring ideas beyond anything reality, which I was not open to. I could never tolerate a camera up my sphincter or peeking into my marriage and kids’ lives—I wanted to write. I sent them both Momzillas and Nut and asked if, gee, since Universal owns NBC and Bravo, couldn’t they just kinda reach over and take my book back and make that? I’ve since learned a lot about corporate red tape and alas, it just doesn’t work like that. But Lara and our two first exec producers, Daniel Rosenberg and Tim Piper of Piro, honed the concept of both books mating. The baby that resulted was Odd Mom Out, with the birth midwives Julie Rottenberg and Elisa Zuritsky. Award-winning Sex and the City scribes, they were my dream partners in this endeavor. Our minds instantly clicked, and we made the show we wanted to make. My hope for Odd Mom Out is to make people—not just moms!—guffaw by holding up a mirror to one contingent of the mom population, the epicenter for extreme parenting, where toddlers learn Mandarin ’cause

fashion show worthy of a catwalk. Yes, I dress up compared to most people in America every day because I wear skirts or dresses and heels instead of pants and sneakers. (But in fairness, stilettos feel like sneakers to me, like those Easy Spirit commercials with nuns playing basketball.) Nevertheless, at preschool in my all-black Club Monaco threads and Trash & Vaudeville motorcycle jacket I often felt like everyone else was so perfectly preened and polished that the dismissal catwalk there was sponsored by Mercedes Benz.

y daughter Ivy once asked me, “Mom, why are you the only mom at school without red bottoms on your shoes?” I didn’t know whether to be proud she was observant or horrified that she somehow gleaned Louboutins status by osmosis. But whether it’s winning hockey tournaments or a making the cheerleading squad, the yardstick from state to state may shift, but the stress of fierce competition doesn’t. When Momzillas came out I was amazed how many letters I got from Midwestern, Southern and Pacific Northwest states saying that despite the change of metropolitan scenery and shifting metric of aspiration, it was the same exact thing. Mothers-in-law from hell are the rule and not the exception, social climbers abound and money talks. Odd Mom Out IS relatable, and hopefully people will see that the outside judgmental forces can just vanish if you flush them out of your consciousness, grab your kiddies, blare some Hedwig and dance on top of all those unsolicited opinions. ✦ OCTOBER 2015 • AVENUE MAGAZINE | 91

Wine enthusiast and founder of the Booze Business blog, Arthur Shapiro, shares his take on Altaneve Prosecco A Distinctive Product Deals with Marketing Challenges Sales of sparkling wine in the United States has grown twice as fast as the overall wine category over the past five years. Within this class, the non-champagne segment accounts for more than 90% of sales, with prosecco leading the charge. In effect, sparkling wine is enjoyed more often—once saved for special occasions, it is now the drink of choice for everyday and anytime use. Prosecco also has a price advantage, with a moderate cost of $12 to $15 per bottle. But can the prosecco category handle a more expensive version? My answer is that as the category matures there is ample room for high-quality products. Enter David Noto with Altaneve Prosecco David Noto’s family has been making wine for 10 generations in Italy, and he grew up with a passion for prosecco. After working for years in the engineering and finance technology fields, he moved to the United States and brought Altaneve to the market in 2013. According to David, “The U.S. market is not deeply familiar with the broad range of prosecco, so we felt it was time to introduce the best.” Altaneve has it all: provenance, terroir, heritage and high quality. Taste? I’m a huge prosecco fan, and I think it’s the best-tasting Italian sparkling wine I’ve ever had. It’s versatile (any occasion, with or without food), and unlike others it’s consistent from bottle to bottle. Altaneve sells it for roughly $29.99 a bottle, and that’s the challenge.

The Marketing Challenge I suppose it’s because the category in the U.S. market is still in its infancy. Or maybe the current image for the category is that it is generally low in price. Either way, David faces an uphill battle getting the message across that high-end prosecco is worth the price. After all, wine categories segment by price, so why not this one? I can understand the consumer reluctance to trade up. The category is still evolving, and they came to it originally for an inexpensive alternative to champagne, so why pay for top shelf. That perception will change over time, but for producers like David, accelerating a change in perception will take marketing muscle and lots of money, as Altaneve is a start-up brand. But, the hesitation by bars and restaurants is baffling to me. The markup and profitability from Altaneve would make the brand more than worthwhile. Yet, the reluctance to change and to accept a segmentation of the prosecco category, not to mention lack of knowledge, all make it an uphill battle. To me, it defies logic. I guess the bright side is twofold. First, slowly but surely, better retailers like Sherry Lehmann and important chains like Capital Grille are stocking Altaneve. Then there is David Noto himself. What are some of the benefits from coaching? Some of our youngest veterans have never known another job, so a coach can help them figure out what they want to do next and the best route to get there. A coach is great for practicing interview skills. It’s also beneficial to have a coach when navigating the intricate maze of available post-GI benefits. Most important, coaching helps veterans prepare for the huge cultural change from military to academic or corporate life.

What are your goals for Stand Beside Them? What opportunities are in the future? We launched our pilot program with 10 coaches in June 2013 and have quickly grown our roster to 112 coaches in 20 states. Our goal is to expand our coaching corps to all 50 states. We never want to see a veteran feeling isolated, or unable to find another fulfilling purpose after military service. What inspired you to start Stand Beside Them? In 2012, I came across a revealing report detailing the needs of our returning veterans, and I was eager to learn more. The actual facts were appalling: 60,000 were homeless; 400,000 cases existed of untreated PTSD, while many veterans were waiting between 1 and 2 years for benefits; and veteran unemployment rates had soared to 9.4% percenr. And the most shocking fact: 22 veterans commit suicide every single day (one every 69 minutes). I had to do something! In early 2013, I founded Stand Beside Them, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit charitable organization providing free coaching and mentoring for veterans and their spouses and caregivers to help during the challenging transition back to civilian life.

he prevalence of cooperative apartments is unique to New York City. However, buyers must be cautious in making any judgment about co-ops based on square footage because the information provided cannot be relied upon for analytical or comparative purposes. Today, when cooperative square footage can be measured by anyone, including by brokers, there is no standard practice with respect to measurement of hallways and closets, inside or outside walls, net or gross square footage. When NYC cooperatives were built or converted, most were described by room count, not by square footage. Now, even when the word ‘approximately’ accompanies cooperative square footage, the measurement should be disregarded as the term is not quantifiable. On the other hand, the stated square footage measurement of a condominium is typically taken from the original prospectus of the building and can be a reliable source for analysis or comparison of condominiums. A condominium offering plan cites how square feet have been measured and what they include, whereas the square footage of most existing cooperative apartments is rarely if ever documented officially anywhere. Most importantly, whether you are buying or selling a cooperative, condominium, or townhouse, rely on a professional real estate broker for accurate information and trusted counsel. In the case of a cooperative, be aware that square footage especially when used for comparative purposes may be inaccurate or misleading. For other purposes, refer to a professional floor plan. Is the space what you want and need? The configuration of space, the number of rooms, and a myriad of other factors will combine to determine the real value of a home, and a trusted professional will assist you. ✦

IN WHAT FIELD OTHER THAN REAL ESTATE COULD YOU SEE YOURSELF AND WHY? Talk show host. I love being with people, talking to them and establishing a meaningful rapport. Anyone who has bought or sold real estate can relate to the idea that you enter into a surprisingly intimate relationship with your

layouts, etc. We mobilized the co-op shareholders, assessed the viability of combining the two properties, presented and ultimately negotiated five individual transactions all closing in a single, tightly orchestrated afternoon. DID YOU HAVE ANOTHER CAREER PRIOR TO REAL ESTATE? HOW HAS IT CONTRIBUTED TO YOUR SUCCESS IN REAL ESTATE? My career and passion aligned at an early age. The traditional response to the aging face used to be a combination surgery of mid-face lift, brow lift, necklift with a facelift. My question is, why do a brow lift if its not indicated, as it can lead to a ‘surprised look’ in most people? When you follow pictures of aging faces over time, the brow position rarely shifts, and when it does, it’s usually only the lateral sides of the brow. Why do a mid-face lift when natural results can be achieved with volume enhancement? Facelift surgery has evolved considerably in recent years. Location, location

It changes every time—if I am not staying at a friend’s house, I usually stay at Sunset Tower or at the Mr. C Hotel. I love the view at Sunset Tower and how central these places are located.

I am based in New York City, so anytime I get to travel to Los Angeles it is a lovely change and a breath of fresh air. I love the weather, the ocean and the relaxed, calming energy.

I also enjoy Venice for people watching and being by the ocean. Abbot Kinney has great food and shopping and embodies the essence of the California vibe that I love. Kiteboarding is one of my ultimate passions: if I can find a couple of free hours, I like to go kiteboarding in Malibu—it is so gorgeous there.

Inspiration abound

Traveling is an inherent part of my lifestyle—it shapes who I am. The different cultures and environments that I see and experience, as well as the interesting people I meet, constantly inspire me both personally and professionally. I love exploring art, architecture, music, literature and landscapes from cultures around the world because it all inevitably affects personal attitudes and styles that filter through my own style, as well as how I strategically position our business.

I am extremely meticulous when packing—my suggestion is to think carefully about each outfit according to each occasion so you do not overpack. My travel staples are a pair of great black pants, a silk blouse, a classic black dress, running shoes and a swimsuit, because you never know. I always have a deep moisturizing cream in my handbag to ensure that my skin is always hydrated, and I use a wonderful Tracie Martyn mask for overnight flights. I always wear a black cashmere sweater and pashmina when traveling because it is always cold on the plane. I NEVER wear heels while traveling. ✦

FAVORITE JOURNALISM CLICHÉ? LEAST FAVORITE? Favorite: “Get me rewrite!” Least favorite: “If it bleeds, it leads.”

WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR FAVORITE NEW YORK DISCOVERIES? The best place to write, or just daydream is the Rose Main Reading Room at the New York Public Library on Fifth Avenue. Best cookies are Levain’s oatmeal-raisin, and the best breakfast can be found at Norma’s. For anniversaries and birthday dinners, the best is Babbo or Marea, and the greatest ping-pong hideout is SPiN.
