KEITH MAJOR

Dear Readers, SUMMER. IS. FINALLY. HERE. Who doesn’t feel like they’ve been let off a leash after a long, horrid winter? Now that we can finally play, we will. We start off our summer issues with Fernanda Niven on the cover. Fernanda’s family has been coming out east for eons, as she says in our interview with writer William Norwich, where she remembers the days when she had to plead with city friends to leave Manhattan. Now, I’d imagine, she has to beat off houseguests with a stick. Despite the changes that the years have wrought to her beloved Southampton, Fernanda, like so many long-term Hamptons denizens, is determined to stand her ground out east. If it is the right of every local to complain about the horrors that plague this community come summer, namely traffic, crowds and more traffic, it is a huge faux pas for newcomers to think that they will gain acceptance by making the same complaints. To a man, locals will staunchly defend their patch of beach to outsiders, even as swarms of tourists descend like locusts on those on those pristine small towns. The people who have been coming to those towns for generations are not going to budge,

“If there is one thing that the Bonackers and blue bloods alike agree on, it is that this section of Long Island is one of the most beautiful places in the world to be in high summer.” even if it sometimes seems like they are the Spartans defending Thermopylae. It is their summer retreat and they will always love it no matter what. If there is one thing that the Bonackers and blue bloods alike agree on, it is that this section of Long Island is one of the most beautiful places in the world to be in high summer. In June the Hamptons are particularly lovely, as the sea still holds the winter chill and there are explosions of flowers wherever you look. June is the sweetest summer month, so enjoy it; it always passes far too quickly. Daisy Prince

n honor of the opening of the Charles James exhibition at the Anna Wintour Costume Center, this year’s Met Gala theme was none other than an homage to the eponymous couturier. First Lady Michelle Obama inaugurated the Costume Center, and the gala followed. The era of fancy ball gowns and polished glamour made a wave on the red carpet, as various designers took part in their interpretations of the designs of “America’s First Couturier.” Zac Posen, Givenchy Haute Couture and Oscar de la Renta brought the most stunning ensembles to life. Spotted were Lauren Santo Domingo, Lupita Nyong'o in Prada, James Marshall and Elettra Wiedemann, Aerin Lauder, Georgina Chapman, the Olsen twins in vintage Chanel, Giovanna Battaglia in Dolce & Gabbana, Karolina Kurkova in a stunning Marchesa and of course Jay-Z and Beyoncé. The night was “beyond fashion.”

One of New York’s most powerful dining hubs is the scene of two of the season’s best parties

Barbara Walters – “Love at 90.” Barbara has a long way to go to get to that point, but, hey, we’re talking fiction. 42 | AVENUE ON THE BEACH • JUNE 2014

Cynthia McFadden – “A girl from Maine comes to New York . . .” George Stephanopoulos – “It would be about Holly.” Again. Fareed Zakaria – “I would write about an immigrant’s experience—growing up in one world, and then living in another. It’s such a complicated reality of loss and pain, but also of joy and fulfillment, that only a novel could do it justice.” Ali Wentworth – I’d love to write about a woman’s mid-life crisis. It’s more profound than buying a Porsche and dating a model.” Back to the Four Seasons. Perhaps a less subtle reminder of the punch of the place was the Hollywood Reporter’s 35 Most Powerful People in Media party, celebrating folks like Bill O’Reilly, Arianna Huffington, Charlie Rose, Norah O’Donnell, Michael Bloomberg, Stephen Colbert and Jon Stewart. And lest you think these Mt. Olympus dwellers aren’t essentially very human, consider this: Gayle King borrowed tip money from Don Lemon for the coat check; John Molner held her purse as fiancée Katie Couric was photographed; Patrick Stewart and bride Sonny talked cozily about their honeymoon; titans of the press (un-named) shamelessly inspected Ronan Farrow (re: paternity rumors) and voted 2 (“yes, he is”) to 1 (“absolutely not”) while Joy Behar said we should all take a naked dip in the pool. Talk about a humanizing image. But my favorite was the story that an actress told us about the diagnosis she had received of a devastating and complicated neurological disease. Harvey Weinstein recommended a doctor, she said, and when she got to that physician’s office, she discovered that Weinstein had paid for her complete treatment. He had never told anyone. Now that’s power. ✦

J

une is the month that slides us into summer. But before spring breathed its last breath this year, we were lucky to attend two parties at a place that holds the power year round. This was the Four Seasons, the renowned restaurant and a setting that is barely disguised (as “The Tudor Room”) in Holly Peterson’s heralded new book, The Idea of Him. In the book the protagonist, Allie Crawford, has a boss named Murray Hillsinger (“a toad-like man with a shoeshine comb-over and cracked leather on his expensive loafers’ fault line over his fat pinkie toe”). The fictional Hillsinger has his opinions. “This is a MERITOCRACY,” he says at one point, describing the portion of Manhattan’s “one percent” who have worked their way up to fame and fortune. “It’s not about the money, it’s about what you’ve accomplished. [Be] self made, or get the hell out!” Returning to the real world: I talked to Peterson at one of those Four Seasons parties, and as she explained to me, the “meritocracy” she writes about is the real thing. “Look around tonight,” she said. ”There are documentary filmmakers, journalists . . . it’s not about money.” True enough, I thought, but the moguls pick up the check, and we thank them. The occasion was Holly’s primo book party, hosted by her dad, Pete Peterson, and stepmother, Joan Ganz Cooney. When Pete introduced her, he said, “Though I’ve been pretty active for 65 years, I’m now known as ‘Holly Peterson’s father.’ ” Holly herself told us that her father tells everyone they should ‘take what Holly says, divide it in half, then divide it in half again.’ ” Admitted Holly: “I am prone to hyperbole, but it is not hyperbole to say I was a pain in the ass when I was writing this book.” Pete took the mike and said, ‘That is a gross understatement.’” I, your faithful reporter, looked around at the merit-earning, glamorous crowd and wondered what they would write, were they to write a novel. So I asked. Here’s what they said:

Roller Skating Backwards A snapshot of Lily Pond Lane in the 1970s

M

y road is so deserted you can lie in the middle of it for practically an hour during the day, even in the summer, and no car will come. That was the first line of the first book I ever wrote, entitled Me and the Lucky Rusty Roller Skates. It was a coming-of-age story about a young girl’s preference for her old clip-on skates as opposed to those new fancy white boots with blue plastic wheels that had just appeared on the scene. The year was 1979; I was 7 years old, and I had plagiarized the line from a discarded short story by my older sister. The road I was referring to was Lily Pond Lane in East Hampton, where my family had a house for 36 years, which, at that point, apparently, was a quiet country lane that you could lie around on without taunting death. Today, if you were to stand in the middle of Lily Pond Lane on an August afternoon or even a January afternoon— let alone lie down—you would be run over. It might be the “trade parade” of construction/landscaping/irrigating/ cleaning trucks or it could be the flashy sports cars taking the straightaway at full throttle, or SUVs full of beach-goers, with Jay-Z blaring out of their open windows. But it’s even more likely that you’d get mowed down by one of those large packs of spandex-clad competitive bicyclers who have been training at SoulCycle all winter and are unleashed in the summer to hijack the back roads like swarms of killer bees. But that wasn’t always the case. The 1970s, my first decade in East Hampton, was, in my memory, very low key and mellow. Back then, Main Street was full of useful stores—there was Mike’s Liquor store, where adults bought, well, liquor (there was wine, but wine wasn’t really fashionable back then) and the News Co., where I bought Wacky Packs and Smurfs and where some scandalous adults obviously bought Playboy magazines because they sold them there. Preppy haven, Mark, Fore & Strike,

was on the corner, exploding with needlepoint yachting-flag belts and green blazers; and Marley’s sold Barbies and board games up the street. Newtown Lane had Dreesen’s and the Newtown Market, where we drank cold Slushies and my mom did all of our grocery shopping while our enormous Ford LTD (to hell with the oil crisis!) idled out front. But my favorite place of all was the Cheese Cupboard, with its sawdust-covered floors and ample samples of cheeses like Brie and Gouda, at that time still somewhat exotic. Another exotic rarity was swimming pools. In the ’70s, people in East Hampton simply didn’t have them at home and, sadly, no one we knew on Lily Pond had one; they were a total novelty. My family, however, was fortunate enough to have two friends who had beautiful pools, and off we would go for the occasional highly anticipated swim. Ellen and Jim Marcus’ pool was behind their then-house on Georgica Road. It was not the Technicolor baby-blue kind we saw in movies, but a very dark, deep naturalistic black that didn’t allow you to see the bottom. The best part was when you dove in because the Marcuses’ pool had an underwater stereo system piping surround sound; so although you couldn’t see a thing through the inky water, you could hear the Bee Gees clear as a bell. Our other friends who had a pool were the Meehans. They lived at Lasata (although I never once heard them call it that), which is a very famous house because it was where Jacqueline Bouvier lived until she was 12. Now I hear that Reed Krakoff owns it, but I don’t know him. In the ’70s, too, we would turn into the long driveway (the house sits on 12 acres on Further Lane) and park what seemed like miles away from the house, where there was not only a pool but an entire giant pool house that was the size of a regular house, and modern! We would swim for several hours and sometimes we were fortunate enough to be invited

And even though times have changed, Lily Pond Lane . . . still remains one of the prettiest streets in the United States.

into the main house to eat treats prepared by Wong and Chu, the Meehans’ cooks, and ride the elevator (!) to the second floor. And speaking of Jackie O., we were well aware of Grey Gardens, where her cousins lived, as it was just at the corner of our road where Lily Pond curled into Apaquogue. Pre-Ben Bradlee and Sally Quinn, the house was so scary: overgrown, weedy, decrepit, the neighborhood haunted house. My father, Bill Doyle, who was in the auction business, had been there on an appraisal, and it was the only time in his 30-year career of walking through people’s basements and attics and dusty old manors that he actually walked out of the house and threw up on the front lawn. He hated the smell of cats. But the Beales loved him, and Little Edie would call our house day and night under one pretext or another. All of this seemed quite normal to me in the ’70s, and I spent most of my time blithely biking and roller-skating on Lily Pond Lane. I knew every bump and dip and pothole. I knew where the Doberman Pinschers would rage out of the split rail fence and chase you for two houses, and where the reported “mafia gangster” lived, right next door to the Minskoffs’ (of theater fame) house that loomed over the ocean. I knew where there was honeysuckle to stop and taste and where the Williams’ and the d’Oliers’ gardeners would stop what they were doing and share their pack of Wrigley’s Spearmint gum with you. And even though times have changed, Lily Pond Lane, with its rows of majestic Plane trees shading the faded pavement, and its handsome shingled houses set on what are now pristinely manicured lawns, still remains one of the prettiest streets in the United States. (It’s no surprise Bob Dylan immortalized it with his song Sara, or that the director of the movie Something’s Gotta Give chose it for the opening scene where Jack Nicholson drives into town.) The lane is bookended by Georgica and Main beaches, two of the most beautiful beaches in the world; and on those evenings when the foliage is lush and the grass is emerald and the pond is sapphire, it is easy to understand why everyone wants to live here. Some places, no matter the decade, never go out of style. ✦ 58 | AVENUE ON THE BEACH • JUNE 2014

A Habit for Houses

In Amagansett, the producer/manager Sandy Gallin has turned a salt-box cottage into a celebrity-ready compound. He’s done this almost 50 times before. And he’s aching to do it again. Is he flippin’ crazy?

W

hat makes most of us crazy keeps Sandy Gallin sane. The New York-born producer of Hollywood movies and Broadway plays and manager of stars like Cher, Dolly Parton and Michael Jackson has renovated and flipped so many homes since the 1970s, he’s lost count. “About 47, 48, 49,” he says, adding that he’s lived in every one of them. “I never did a ‘spec’ house.” He’s kept them from six months to several years, he continues, “until someone made me an offer that made it worthwhile to sell.” He’s only done two on the East Coast, and the second, at 466 Further Lane in Amagansett, is currently on the market for $24.5 million, presumably sufficient inducement to sell. That sprawling, shingled, impeccablylandscaped compound on just over 2 acres is a short walk from Indian Wells Beach. The main house is shaped like Siamese-twin capital letter L’s fused at their heads. It has four bedrooms and five-and-a-half bathrooms (and the possibility for more of both). It also has: a screening room, a great room and a formal dining room, as well as an eat-in chef ’s kitchen, outdoor pergolas, stone paths, fireplaces and covered porches; an apple orchard equipped with a table capable of seating about 100 guests; and four out-buildings (among them, a gym, a three-car garage and a pool house complete with whirlpool). All are made of carefully chosen exotic woods and stone. Gallin knows celebrities and their needs, and the house was designed to meet them. But the Further Lane compound comes with even more: a history that reaches back to the earliest days of the East End, when the 60 | AVENUE ON THE BEACH • JUNE 2014

property was owned by Benjamin Hedges and Fanny Hand Barnes, members of the earliest families to settle in Amagansett. Married in 1860, they sold 22 acres of land to a Benjamin Terry, in 1883. Three generations of the Terry family then owned that property, one of a number of parcels of nearby land they controlled, all of it on or near the ocean, according to a 1902 Amagansett atlas in the Long Island Collection at East Hampton Library. Today, some of that land is home to the East Hampton Town Marine Museum, and, on parcels running south of Bluff Road between Indian Wells Highway and Atlantic Avenue, to the unspoiled Amagansett National Wildlife Refuge and the Atlantic Doubles Dunes Preserve. Captain Benjamin H. Terry served in the Civil War, married an Amagansett girl in 1864 and lived in Southold, but by 1880 had moved south to the shore, where he worked as a farmer until his death in 1887. He left his property to his wife, who ran a boardinghouse on what is now Indian Wells Highway. That year, one of their sons married Bertha “Bessie” Hand, a descendent of the original owner of the land. In 1954, Bessie sold her land to Rose H. Jackson, wife of John Day Jackson, publisher of the New Haven Journal-Courier and the New Haven Register. His father, a lawyer and brigadier general who served in the Civil War, was descended from Oliver Wolcott, a signer of the Declaration of Independence. Rose’s maternal ancestry included Governor William Bradford, commander of the Mayflower. Rose, a patron of the arts, died in 1977, 16 years after her husband, and her children promptly sold today’s 466 Further Lane. The buyer was Katherine McPherson, who already owned another

THE ESTATE WAS PREVIOUSLY “A TOTALLY DIFFERENT HOUSE,” SAYS THE WIFE OF THE LAST OWNER: “A LITTLE SALTBOX ON A LARGE PIECE OF PROPERTY, SO CUTE INSIDE, WITH A ’40S KITCHEN, 3,000 SQUARE FEET AT MOST. IT WORKED SO WELL.” BUT IT HAD BEEN EMPTY FOR A DECADE, SAYS GALLIN. “IT SMELLED.” adjacent Terry parcel, once all part of the same property. It appears to have passed through several hands before it was bought by her father, a lawyer from Manhasset named Gilbert Roberts, sometime in the 1920s, says Susan McPherson, who would later marry one of Katherine’s children. Katherine’s husband was John Cloud McPherson of Short Hills, New Jersey, who’d joined International Business Machines in 1930. McPherson would eventually oversee all technical activities at IBM, and was “unquestionably the central figure in the IBM technical escalade from 1930 to the early Fifties,” according to Herb Grosch in Columbia University’s online “Computing History.” McPherson’s son and daughter spent summers on Further Lane in what was then “a totally different house,” says Susan, describing “a little saltbox on a large piece of property, so cute inside, with a ’40s kitchen, 3,000 square feet at most, three bedrooms, two baths and an attic; and that’s all it was. It worked so well.” She says she’d often tell her husband Bruce, a designer of yachts, that she wished she could pick it up and move it “out of Long Island.” 62 | AVENUE ON THE BEACH • JUNE 2014

Eventually, Bruce’s sister took possession—her brother had a place in Hyannisport—and remained until ten years ago, when she moved to a retirement community. At the time, Bruce had recently adopted Princeton Academy of the Sacred Heart, a school for boys, as a philanthropic cause, and urged his sister to give the house to its trustees, in 2009. The school then sold the property to Sandy Gallin, for $5.1 million, in 2011. “It smelled,” says Gallin, “but the location was perfect, one of the three best streets in the Hamptons. I started cleaning and emptying. There were newspapers piled floor to ceiling, cartons of Tab, 50-yearold appliances.” He painted and furnished the place from Ikea and moved in while starting the landscaping. Then he vacated and began an overhaul, turning the original house into the living room of the new one and digging out laundry, storage, flower and screening rooms. “This is my third season here,” he says. “I’m ready to do another house.” Do some people think him crazy for that? I wonder. “Not some,” he says. “Most!” ✦

ou know that when the great Enzo Ferrari himself described it as “the most beautiful car ever made,” the vehicle you are dealing with is something pretty serious. I am of course referring to the Jaguar E-Type, or XKE as it’s known on these shores. Today, the specific model I am driving is the 1966 Series I 4.2 Roadster, the most classic iteration of an iconic design, particularly given its stunning livery of British racing green-with-tan interior. The Museum of Modern Art agrees: The XKE roadster is one of only six vehicles in its permanent design collection. Upon its launch at the Geneva Motor Show in 1961, the XKE created a demand so great that the head of Jaguar Cars, Sir William Lyons, made the unprecedented move of ordering a second car to be driven overnight from the factory in Coventry, England, to Switzerland to sate the public’s desire and interest. No previous car in the history of popular motoring had caused such a stir, especially when it could claim to be the fastest production car in the world, and attainable at a third of the price of its rivals, from Aston Martin and Ferrari. This was (almost) a sports car for the people. A production run of almost 73,000 during its 13-year life span, with two-thirds of these cars finding homes in the United States, tells you all you need to 64 | AVENUE ON THE BEACH • JUNE 2014

know about the popularity of this magnificent machine. However, the passage of time and a huge resurgence of interest since the 50th birthday of the XKE back in 2011 have pushed prices up steeply, with a record $467,500 paid at Sotheby’s Art of the Automobile auction in Manhattan last year. However, do not be put off, as good Series I XKEs are still available in the more palatable neighborhood of $100,000. The car itself is pure drama; it has an impossibly long nose with purposeful vents and elegant swept-up rear haunches that ooze style and power. Today, the sun is shining and I have decided that this is a day for going to the beach, via Southampton, to pick up some provisions. I also believe that to respect the car, it is necessary to drive it dressed in such a way that reflects the car’s timeless elegance. In the UK there is a growing trend among the owners of classic cars such as this to dress according to the era of the car they possess. However in the case of the XKE, its timeless class lends itself perfectly to Hamptons style. I therefore choose a pair of white linen shorts, long enough to ensure that my legs will not stick to the nicely patinated leather, and a simple blue linen shirt. My XKE is by no means the easiest car to get into with the roof up (but then again why would you need to do that on a glorious Hamptons day?), so I undo the three easy clips and with one deft movement manage to bring the top down in

order to see and be seen. Once tucked under the oversized wooden steering wheel, I instantly feel at home, almost as if I were part of the car. For, make no mistake, as the car industry has relentlessly increased the size of its products over time, this is a very delicate and perfectly proportioned beast. Sunglasses on, I press the clutch down and turn the key in the center of the beautifully turned aluminum dash. The fuel pump whirs and, once I’ve pushed the starter button, the magnificent 4.2 liter straight six erupts into life with a delicious rasp that is quintessentially British. No V8 burble here, just a very purposeful but polite hint of the power that lies within. I select first gear and with the lightest of touches head gently down the driveway. If you are over six feet tall, your head will be over the line of the windshield, but this merely has the effect of your being able to enjoy the sensation of wind in your hair while the aural delight from the rear is hard to beat. I head down North Sea Road but am enjoying myself so much that when I see the sign pointing left to Southampton and right to New York, I decide to go into town the long way. The beach will have to wait a little as I floor the throttle on the back roads over and over again, all the while convincing myself that the speedometer must be lying. I pull into town with a smile plastered across my face, and as I stand at the counter at Sant Ambroeus eating one of that vendor’s superb sandwiches, I look out onto Main Street and feel satisfied and excited that this thing of exquisite beauty is mine—if only for the day. I head on to the beach club, where the valets are jostling for position once they see the car approach. After all, Frank Sinatra, Steve McQueen, Tony Curtis and Brigitte Bardot, all one-time owners of an XKE, cannot have been wrong. ✦

Best-dressed Fernanda Niven talks about Parasol—her newest fashion venture—sun protecting clothing for women and children by William Norwich ■ photographed by Jordan Doner

s people in the garment industry from Milan to Manhattan have known since the invention of the zipper, you’re “just making clothing” until the right people start wearing your stuff. Then, it’s fashion. So it was a sunny day in the offices of Parasol, purveyors of the sun-protecting clothing that’s über-fashionable with stylish women and children this season in the Hamptons, when the powers that be had the great idea to send, or “gift,” as they say on Seventh Avenue, one of the brand’s smart shirts to Fernanda Niven. Here on the East End, where Niven’s family has been keeping cool and wet in summers, and warm and cozy in winters, for decades, Fernanda Niven, the best-dressed fashion world veteran and health and fitness devotee, had just recently taken up paddle boarding. And thanks to her, paddle boarding was fast becoming a contagion among her closest friends. “Absolutely 100 percent obsessed,” Niven said of her passion for the sport, when I caught up with her on a recent day. “I wore the Parasol shirt every day and it did what it promised: It absorbed 98 percent of the sun’s harmful rays in and out of the water; it’s made of this great Italian Lycra that’s amazingly lightweight, quick-drying and breathable; and I didn’t need sunblock wherever the shirt”—thanks to its long sleeves—“covered me. “And didn’t that make life on the paddleboard easy?” Niven smiled. Plus . . .” she added, pausing to laugh, “. . . I thought I looked pretty cute in it.” Soon thereafter Niven began consulting with the company, eventually invested in it and is today the brand’s creative director. Now, if everything goes according to plan, Parasol’s sun-protecting women’s, girls’ and boys’ clothing, available exclusively on the Neiman Marcus website, won’t merely have a place in the sun, it will cast a very big shadow as a lifestyle brand, encompassing accessories, beauty, hats, sunscreens and sunglasses. It’s Niven’s job to help open Parasol in these markets.

hat I was unsure of was the effectiveness of sun-protective clothing. Did it really block upwards of 98 percent of the sun’s harmful rays, which is what Niven told me Parasol’s things do? “I just bought my four-and-a-half-yearold grandson an entire wardrobe of Parasol clothing,” said the celebrated dermatologist Patricia Wexler, M.D., when I asked for her expert perspective. “Sun-protecting clothing is very effective. It’s produced from fabric that offers ultraviolet screening, and it’s rated according to a system first established in Australia,” in 1996. The rating focuses on the weave and density of the fabrics, Wexler explained. You thought wearing a cotton T-shirt over a bathing suit was enough? “A T-shirt offers about 5 SPF and, wet, it’s about 2.5 SPF,” Wexler said, correcting that misperception. “The nice thing about sun-protecting clothing is that it’s now becoming more integrated into designer clothing,” the good doctor continued. “My patients who come to me want to look stylish, and until recently most of the sun-protecting clothing was anything but stylish. Now, brands, including J. Crew and Kate Spade, are using it and Parasol is a particularly good brand because its Lycra is especially lightweight, it breathes easily and it dries quickly. You have to make things comfortable and easy or otherwise people won’t comply. “And with Fernanda involved, and Alexandra . . . ” a reference to Alexandra Kotur, the former Vogue editor who co-founded Parasol about three years ago . . . “you know it’s going to be stylish.” Besides Niven and Kotur, Tiffany Moller and Natalie Kaplan are also Parasol partners. Incorporating style, as a motivating factor to buy sun-protecting clothing, is a major plus, Wexler pointed out. The reason: Skin cancer is “ubiquitous,” she said. “I’ve seen 17-year-olds with it.” According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, melanomas increased 800 percent among women 40 and younger, and 400 percent among men 40 years old and younger over the years 1970 to 2009.

rowing up spending her entire summer in Southampton, with its bicycles, beach clubs, and sunbathing, Niven, I naturally assumed, had done her own posh penance when it came to suffering terrible sunburns. “Actually, I had a mother who was sunblock obsessed,” she said. The smell of sunblock in her mother’s beach bag is every bit as vivid in her childhood memory as the fragrant blooms in her mother’s wonderful garden. “I don’t know how she became so aware of the need for sunblock,” Niven said. This was over three decades ago when skin protection was hardly part of good parenting as it is today. “But I’d get these lectures about being out in the sun. She’d show me the top of her forearm and then flip it over to the side that was all nice and pale, and she’d ask, ‘Do you want skin like this, or like that?’” For the uninitiated, Niven’s mother is the former Fernanda Wetherill, a fabric designer and noted gardener, and great-great granddaughter of John Wanamaker, founder of the Philadelphia department store. Niven’s grandmother, Fernanda Leas, or “Big Fern” as she was affectionately known until her death in 1974, was one of Southampton’s most popular hostesses. Leas owned Westerly, to this day truly one of the most beautiful and architecturally significant houses in the Hamptons. The house is a Neo-Georgian revival built in 1929, with 25 rooms on 29 acres, and since 2009, the home of the fashion designer Tory Burch. “I never tire of the stories about my grandmother,” Niven said. Indeed, Leas was very fashion–forward in her day, an early supporter of Oscar de la Renta and Giorgio di Sant’Angelo. She also loved to give parties. On a rainy day you might enjoy searching the New York Times archives; the newspaper enthusiastically covered Leas’ parties with feature-length articles. During the summer of 1968, for instance, Leas held an affair of grand and jolly proportions with an Arabian Nights theme and skimped on nothing, including a real live elephant.

“You’re “just making clothing” until the right people start wearing your stuff. Then, it’s fashion.” “She’d call the store” [Wanamaker’s in Philadelphia], “and the window dressing people would get to work and pack everything for the party into a truck and drive to Southampton,” Niven said. (The elephant came in its own truck, of course.) There is nothing lackluster on Niven’s father’s side, either. James Niven, known as Jamie—or “Jamie the Enlivener,” as Aileen Mehle dubbed him in her “Suzy” columns—is an executive with Sotheby’s auction house. His father was the famed actor David Niven and his mother the British aristocrat Primula Susan Rollo. “My grandfather spoiled us rotten,” Niven said, remembering visits to the beloved actor and author in France with her younger sister, the interior decorator Eugenie Niven Goodman. David Niven also made frequent trips to New York. “He’d show up with a pile of presents for us,” Fernanda Niven said. “And he loved playing Clue. We’d all sit on the floor playing the game and he’d do the voices. Colonel Mustard was his favorite.” After graduating from the Chapin School and studying at New York University, Niven went to work. Not working wasn’t an option. “My mother always told us that, yes, we came from people who’ve done amazing things but that their achievements weren’t our achievements, and we couldn’t ride their coattails.” After college Niven went west and worked in Hollywood, reading and developing scripts, but the show biz gene wasn’t as dominate as her DNA for fashion and retail. About ten years ago, she launched a line of moderately priced handbags that led to a job at Vera Wang, where she focused on client relations. That experience was great training for her next work experience, as an angel investor in Organic Avenue, the grab-and-go juice business whose juice bars are now sprouting up like alfalfa across the country. “I’d gotten Lyme disease and was doing everything I could to get better,” Niven said. “I wandered into the Organic Avenue in the West Village and started having a green juice every day. I began to feel better. I learned about the company and felt I could add something. It seemed to me that there was an image problem, that people were intimidated and somehow got the message that you had to be completely vegan or vegetarian to benefit from raw foods and juices. Not so. You can have a green juice every day and you’ve done something good for yourself.” Among Niven’s contributions to the juice business was her decision three summers ago to open Organic Avenue’s Southampton location and manage it herself. Now that she’s into sun-protecting ready-to-wear, she believes that like organic juices, the clothing also has an image problem. It’s seen either as too heavy or too “surfer-y” or too girly, she says. So, undertaking Parasol’s mission “to marry fashion with function” seemed, she said, like a perfect next-career move, with an endless summer of opportunities for expansion.

Niven officially joined the company last year. Unfortunately, that doesn’t mean she’s now having an endless summer out in the Hamptons. Instead, her office is on 57th Street and she’ll be there all week. “I know,” she said and laughed. “You’d think I could spend all my time on Long Island.” I asked what she considered the biggest difference between her childhood in the Hamptons, and now. “Back then, when I was growing up, the East End was very much the country,” she replied. “We never said we were ‘going to the Hamptons,’ or the beach; we’d say, ‘We’re going to the country.’ And we usually couldn’t get our city friends to come visit us. It was just farms and fields and vacant land, and not much to do. It’s hard to imagine, isn’t it? But back then, if we’d be out bicycling and lost track of the time and it got toward dusk, there’d be a certain Children of the Corn vibe and we’d pedal faster to get home. I mean, you’d have long stretches with nothing and no one except fields.” Nowadays, of course, Park Avenue ends in Southampton, and sometimes it feels like Bank Street goes all the way to Montauk. Metropolitan life is on tap everywhere. It’s not so easy to unwind, certainly not over the span of just a 48-hour weekend. “I always tell people,” Niven reflected, “that especially out here, it requires a conscious decision to unwind, to slow down, to let someone pass you on the road and not get crazy about it, to be respectful of the people who live and work here all year round.” What else is required to enjoy life on the East End? “High heels or low heels?” I asked, wondering aloud about Niven’s stance on fashion’s version of that portentious dilemma, whether to decorate a beach house with wicker or no wicker. Niven laughed. “Compromise,” she said. “Wear wedge Espadrilles.” ✦

Shelter

Away from the city crowds, Katherine and Marco Birch have found a summer idyll on Shelter Island. by Helena Gautier

photographed by Eric Striffler

Away from the hectic bustle of the Hamptons, the packed restaurants, traffic jams and crowds of people, Shelter Island lies as if forgotten in time, with small country roads framed by massive trees, quiet sandy beaches and small wooden sailboats bobbing gently in the marina and kids on bicycles—everywhere. Shelter Island is known as the “un-Hamptons,” and for this reason, or maybe because the trip from Manhattan takes just 27 minutes by seaplane, Marco and Katherine Birch have chosen this sanctuary for their country retreat. Their house is on Little Ram Island, a small spit of land that juts out between Coecles Harbor and Gardiners Bay, and faces the two farthest points of Long Island, Orient Point to the north and Montauk to the south. The road is guarded by imposing large Osprey nests that line the long, deserted stretch of beach that connects to the rest of the island. A visit to the Birches’ home finds Katherine Birch reclining casually on a couch in the large living room of her estate, which is fully outfitted with an enviable wine cellar, vegetable and herb gardens, a full spa and squash and tennis courts. A deep-water dock just outside the house comes in handy whenever the family arrives by seaplane after a half-hour flight from Midtown, travels to Nantucket to visit the grandparents or explores nearby Block Island on biking excursions. “Shelter Island is so ideal for us because it is situated in the middle of everything we love to do outdoors, like playing tennis, swimming, water skiing and hiking,” Katherine says. “There are some of the most beautiful beaches here, world-class sailing on the bays, wonderful vineyards and fabulous local and fresh food; it is truly a magical place,” she adds, adjusting her sun-kissed blonde hair as she cuddles her 11-month-old daughter, Annabelle, and keeps an eye on son William, who periodically zooms by in his toy car. The Birches’ vast house, of about 18,000 square feet, was designed by Brandes Maselli Architects and built by Robert Plumb of Sag Harbor. It’s designed in a traditional “shingle style,” drawing inspiration from Shelter Island’s rural history as well as its own picturesque setting—a crescent knoll overlooking Coecles Harbor. “The intention was to make the house feel as if it had been lived in for generations,” Katherine says. Her husband, Marco Birch, a portfolio manager at Moore Capital Management, decorated the house himself. An avid sailor, Marco kept his nautical theme consistent throughout the house, from the large model sailboats that adorn the living room, and marine art, to the wall murals of the dining room that were handpainted by artist Ann Harris to depict maps of Shelter Island. A 7-foot copper and brass replica of America’s Cup yacht Endeavour’s weathervane adorns the roof while the interior of the weathervane hangs high in the domed ceiling above the grand staircase. As the wind changes, both internal and external vanes respond in unison to the directionally correct compass hand-painted on the floor. All bedrooms in the house are whimsically themed. “Our son’s room is nautical and is designed to feel like the inside of a galleon, while our daughter’s room is encased in our favorite vignettes of the Mashomack Preserve,” Katherine explains, referring to that 2,000acre natural area. One guest room displays Shelter Island historical memorabilia, like a large wooden kayak suspended above the bed, which was made by a local craftsman, Mike Loriz, from the oak of the largest tree on the island that fell after a storm. 92 | AVENUE ON THE BEACH • JUNE 2014

“The house was built to be enjoyed all year,” Katherine says. “We get just as excited to hit the beach and go out on the boat as we do to bundle up and play paddle tennis in the fall or go snowshoeing and watch the ice boats race on Coecles Harbor in the winter.” The house was clearly built with a love for entertaining in mind, which the Birches do willingly and often. Their doors are always open to family and friends; events range from small intimate dinners in the garden room, to holiday feasts, to epic parties in the disco room that doubles as a movie theater and is equipped with 30 speakers, disco balls, laser lights and a DJ booth. In the summers the great lawn that overlooks Coecles Harbor is also used to entertain. “We can have a rock concert for hundreds of people in the backyard,” Katherine says. “We have hosted the B-52s, the Barenaked Ladies and John Fogerty for the Group for the East End, as well as Rufus and Loudon Wainwright III and [the late] Lou Reed for the 4 Poster tick program.” Although they are always up for entertaining, the Birch family also appreciate the low-key lifestyle of Shelter Island. “There is something here for everyone and it is a wonderful community that I feel a part of,” Katherine says. Being involved in the community and having the desire to protect the local environment led Katherine to get involved with the Group for the East End, for which she serves as vice chair, a commitment she is passionate about. “The Group’s work is based in advocacy and education,” she says. “They inspire people to embrace a conservation ethic by teach-

ing children and adults alike what it means to take care of a place you love. Then, they use their expertise to protect what we all love by advocating for policy change. Water quality, open-space preservation, beach erosion, wildlife habitats—they work at every level to protect and preserve the East End as we know it—and inspire change for generations to come. “We are working hard to protect the nature of the place we all love and teaching our kids to protect their future.” Preservation for future generations is also a deeply personal cause for Katherine, as her own children are growing up in these idyllic surroundings. “We have chickens and my son picks fresh eggs; he also loves helping me plant vegetables and flowers and is very excited about how things are grown,” she says. “I am looking forward to teaching my daughter as well when she is older.” Most of her kids’ time is spent outdoors, having picnics, riding bikes with their parents or going on the boat and to ice cream outings. Once they turn 6, they will join in the footsteps of their father by joining a children’s sailing program at the Shelter Island Yacht Club, which was founded in 1886 and is one of the oldest clubs in America. As the day winds down and the sun sets over Shelter Island, the house feels almost like it is floating on the shimmering waters outside. The family gathers in the kitchen for dinner and the kids are already making plans for the next day’s adventures. There is a lot to do, as another summer of fun, family and friends begins. ✦ 96 | AVENUE ON THE BEACH • JUNE 2014

Serena Dugan and Lily Kanter look back at their growing business’ beginnings, as they look forward to a second busy season at their store in Wainscott 98 | AVENUE ON THE BEACH • JUNE 2014

JUNE 2014 • AVENUE ON THE BEACH | 99

LAST SUMMER, Serena Dugan and Lily Kanter decided to lay down brick-andmortar roots for their popular catalogue and Internet business—aptly named Serena & Lily. While finding retail space near their Sausalito, California headquarters might have seemed the most practical choice for their busy mom/business owner lifestyles, they instead listened to their instincts, considered their customer profile and their brand’s vibe and found themselves 3,000 miles from home, in the Hamptons. Their journey to the Hamptons store actually started a decade before they opened Serena & Lily Beach Market in Wainscott. The business concept was born in 2003, when Dugan walked into Kanter’s previous baby store in Mill Valley, California. Kanter happened to be giving birth to her child that very day, but the store manager encouraged Dugan to leave her portfolio. The next day, Kanter stopped by the store to show off her new son and saw Dugan’s work. As Kanter tells the story, “[The store manager] said, ‘This woman stopped by yesterday and left her portfolio.’ I started flipping through it, and I was just in awe of the work she had put together and left at the store, so I picked up my cell phone and called her, and she’s like, ‘Didn’t you have a baby yesterday?’ And I was like, ‘Yeah, but I’ve got a moment here, and I just thought I’d phone you back and see when we can meet.’ And she said, ‘You tell me.’ ” The two women met shortly thereafter and immediately realized they had a special synergy that could bring opposing, but important, strengths to a partnership.

“We really bring joy into [customers’] lives with our products. It’s creating a happy, joyful place inside someone’s home. It’s not a superficial thing; aesthetics matter.”—Lily Kanter

In that partnership, the domains are clear. Dugan is the left brain: the artist, who crafts the bespoke patterns and designs that are featured throughout the Serena & Lily collection, and who owns the creative side of the company. Kanter, on the other hand, is the business force: Operations, finance, marketing and merchandising all fall on her. Says Dugan, “The biggest challenge in creating a design-driven company is merging the needs of creativity with that of business. Thankfully, the two founders represent both sides, and we have a healthy respect for each other’s domains and interests.” Kanter agrees: “We both have the same instincts about the brand, and where the brand should be going, and what’s on and off brand. We’ve never had a situation where we disagreed on that, which is kind of bizarre!” Serena & Lily officially launched in 2004 and steadily grew from a single nursery collection, adding a full bedding collection and bath items; furniture; rug and window treatments; fabrics and wallpaper; décor and accents, art and more. In the summer of 2012, when Dugan and Kanter visited the Hamptons for the first time, for a designer showcase, they immediately knew they had found a unique market opportunity. “We really wanted the ability to showcase our product in a larger format, and I think that there’s no place like the Hamptons in the world. You’ve got this mixture of influencers, tastemakers, editors from Manhattan; you’ve got Hollywood there. For the most part, all of Manhattan is there, in their ‘happy place.’ It just spoke to us,” Kanter says. Despite the 13-hour door-to-door commute between the women’s California homes and their Hamptons store, their first summer was a success by all measures, and their inclination that the Hamptons and Serena & Lily were a fit was spot-on. “This audience really understands our aesthetic and appreciates our brand,” says Dugan. “We’re so about the summer lifestyle—color, patterns, new prints, optimism—that it just felt like the Hamptons was a perfect showcase for our product, and expression of our lifestyle.” This summer, the women will once again rent a house out East and take turns attending to the Beach Market. They are also opening Serena & Lily Design Market in San Francisco—a decidedly different and more urban boutique.

There is no arguing that Dugan and Kanter, who have two and three kids, respectively, balance full schedules, but, much like their calm and cool design vibe, they keep a positive attitude, hire great people and take things one day at a time. “I think it’s kind of how you design your day,” says Kanter. “I tend to like to stop my day at 6 p.m.; I don’t take any meetings; I get out of the office. I go home to have dinner with my family every night, and I’m always back online after my kids are in bed. My extra two or three hours that I want to put in every night to catch up happen usually between the hours of 9 p.m. and midnight. “One weekend I had sick children and my husband went down too; my nanny had to go to Guatemala for her sister’s wedding, and it was just like ‘Ahhh!’ But you just deal with it,” Kanter says. Dugan says she maintains a similar mentality: “I think it’s a lifelong goal to achieve work-life balance, but I think one of the keys for me is just to be present wherever I am, and I’ll never feel like I have enough time for my kids. And I’ll never feel like I have enough time for work, so the best that I can do is to really give myself fully to either one if I’m in it.” Both women agree that the chaotic times are worth it, when they step back and look at what they have built. They are proud of their thriving and continuously expanding business and the strong company culture they have built for their 87 (and growing) employees. “I’m also amazed at how many emails I get from customers,” says Kanter. “We really bring joy into their lives with our products. It’s creating a happy, joyful place inside someone’s home. It’s not a superficial thing; aesthetics matter. That definitely brings me great pleasure, hearing that we bring joy and happiness into people’s lives.” ✦ JUNE 2014 • AVENUE ON THE BEACH | 103

New York

Vanessa Weiner von Bismarck goes behind the pages of her newly published Living in Style New York (teNeues, 2014) Von Bismarck (inset) walks us through a variety of quintessential New York spaces. Pictured here are the pool and pool house of a Southampton shingled house designed by architect Richard Sawicki and furnished by the owner himself. “To me, my environment is a personal thing and i want to be comfortable in it,” the owner told von Bismarck. The chapter is appropriately titled “Comfort Zone.” JUNE 2014 • AVENUE ON THE BEACH | 105

anessa Weiner von Bismarck was telling her longtime family friend Hendrik teNeues about her complete renovation of her own house in New York when he asked her if she would be interested in doing a book on the subject. She immediately said of course, knowing that it would be a fantastic research project: an opportunity to see what styles she likes while also spotlighting the well-appointed houses that she has seen over the years. German-born Von Bismarck is the great-great granddaughter of Otto von Bismarck, and an accomplished businesswoman in her own right; she co-founded Bismarck Phillips Communication & Media. In writing this book, Von Bismarck felt that she could speak to a special type of New Yorker by zeroing in on houses she has personally spent time in and reflect a combination of European sensibility and New York personality.

1

Walk me through one of the most memorable spaces: I love the apartment of Miles Redd because it feels very personal [Beginning on page 35 of the book]. He has some incredible art on the walls and he uses very, very strong reds, yet it still feels like a place you can live in, which is important for me. I love the apartment’s little details, like the way he puts together his picture frames to tell a story. The best part is that it doesn’t feel overly decorated; it feels like something he has thoughtfully assembled over the years.

2

The chapter “Color Story” showcases the NoHo apartment of a young photographer. The space was designed by Christopher Coleman using a vibrant palette of hot pink, lemon yellow, turquoise and avocado to add whimsy to the industrial space.

3

Who made a great use of their space? I really love the apartment of Frederic and Shirin Fekkai because it has so many uses [“French Connection” beginning on page 161]. It caters to having children and entertaining while still being simple; it’s inspirational in its simplicity. I know them well, so I know it perfectly reflects who they are—I love the library they made, his [crescent-shape] desk, which is amazing; they have great [intricately patterned] floors, which they were lucky with because [the apartment] had those floors, but I love them, and they have this little formal dining room—it feels like a Parisian apartment

Since we are focusing on the Hamptons for the summer, can you elaborate on how you chose the two Hamptons homes featured in the book? The Hamptons, especially looking at it from the perspective of a European in New York, have a very quintessential “Hamptons style.” You start with the shingled house and these rich gardens—it’s interesting to me that you find such lushness by the seaside. I love the way the houses [in the book] were designed in such a clean way. I love the details—like the fireplace you can access from both sides. I like the natural palettes that they used because it’s more about the outdoors, than the inside. Still, you can be cozy on the inside and I can imagine myself sitting there on a winter afternoon, but then I can also imagine people running around in their bathing suits in the summer and living the beach life.

106 | AVENUE ON THE BEACH • JUNE 2014

From the chapter “Comfort Zone,” a semi-covered daybed provides a place to relax and the option for shelter from the sun by the pool.

4

Did anything blow you away or really inspire you? So many little details inspired me—it could be stones on the floor, the way someone has done their entrance. I look at so many details now—people’s crown moldings and what stone they use for the counters, or what they’ve done over their fireplaces. I use everything for inspiration right now. So, I think there were a lot of things that I found really impressive. JUNE 2014 • AVENUE ON THE BEACH | 107

5

“Style, Underground” shows the apartment of Lela Rose , designed by WORKac. The design for this “inverse triplex” was created with entertaining in mind. The kitchen/dining area, above, features special tables that can be joined together for large dinners.

So, from all you saw, what inspired your own renovation? It’s all inspirational and I’ve got lots of tags in the book, but I’m not that far along in my house. Hopefully, in a couple of months, I’ll be closer to deciding on things like furniture and fireplaces. I’m looking at kitchen counters right now—I’m looking at the “East meets West” counter [page 171]—the amazing gray counters. I love that but not sure if its okay with children. I love the TriBeCa space, but I don’t have a loft, so for me it’s inspirational in that I love the idea of it but I can’t use it exactly.

108 | AVENUE ON THE BEACH • JUNE 2014

6

What advice would you give someone about to start a design project? It should reflect their personalities and lifestyles. That is always important, and it’s why I asked a few interior designers for their own spaces. I feel it’s going to be most reflective of who they are because if they do a space for somebody else, they have to reflect who the client is and it becomes a mishmash of things. I think when you look at Miles’ apartment, for example, it really reflects his passion for flamboyant interiors.

“Summer Escape” is an East Hampton oasis designed by Dominic Gasparoly and Khalid Watson of GWdesign. The designers played with contemporary style and “revised classic pieces” to create a modern beach house. The bedroom, above, shows off beach-inspired accents, like the wooden propeller, which Von Bismarck notes “add subtle coastal flavor.”

7

What did you learn or take away from this book? I learned that a few details make all the difference and that the best interior designers work with their clients as interpreters of the clients’ personality and style. Not an easy feat.

This image also comes from the “Color Story” chapter: Von Bismarck writes, “Handles made of leather and antique brass contrast with the avocado greenstained wood cabinets in the kitchen.”

8

“Highline Living” shows off a vertical garden by Lauren Corradi. It is a “living, breathing mechanized system made up of plumbing pipes, felt pockets, timers, liquid food, mixers and about 350 plants,” writes Von Bismarck. Designer Sandra Chamberlin extended this vertical garden into the family-friendly living space with a pair of chairs covered in suede petals.

Would you do another book? I am thinking about writing a book to share my experience of coming to New York and starting a business, with all the challenges that it represented and the rewards that came with it. I loved working on this one, though because of my renovation project, it truly gave me a lot of inspiration.

Defining the MODERNIST PARADISE Frederico Azevedo and his visions for landscape design interview by Andrew

J. Roth 1

Frederico Azevedo is an expert at turning a plot of land into a sustainable paradise. With clients such as Joan Hamburg, Ron Delsener, Lesley Gore and soccer star Pelé, Azevedo exhibits a natural command of beauty. Through the placement of pools, vegetable and rose gardens, play areas and perennial flora, Azevedo elevates any backyard from a collection of flowers to an oasis of serenity. There is a palpable sense of joy, too, in these creations—whether they be explosions of color or expansive vistas of open air, the work always feels modern. The catalyst for such inspiration originated in Azevedo’s home city of Rio de Janeiro, where, he says, he was moved by the modernist architectural movement that took the city by storm in the 1960s.

What is the origin story of Unlimited Earth Care? I founded my company in 1993, and I began landscaping primarily in New York City, and then I came out east to the Hamptons to develop my first project in the U.S., more specifically Mecox Bay Front in Water Mill. Throughout the course of the first project, I got requests for other projects, and everything just started to roll. At that point I decided it was time to establish

my own company, now located in Bridgehampton, NY. A recurring theme in your work is the repetition of color, texture and shape. Where did you develop this style and how did it arrive in your work? My work and career have been greatly inspired by Lota de Macedo Soares and Roberto Burle Marx. The concept of innovation, using sustainable plants, blending colors and mixing textures, has always fascinated me, and is translated into my work. Flamengo Park in Rio de Janeiro and Parque do Flamengo in Brasilia were both created in the 1960s but developed in the ’70s when I was growing up. The enthusiasm for “modernism,” using basic 2

shapes, repeating colors and varying textures became a part of my life and eventually part of my projects. 1

2

What internationally, either a garden or museum, has inspired you most recently? Most recently, I visited the Musée du Quai Branly, Museum of the Primitive Arts, in Paris, France. The gardens were designed and planted by Gilles Clement and Patrick Blanc. These gardens are massive, with a huge variety of vibrantly colorful and healthy plants. They even used certain

raw materials like rebar to make the impressive sculptural fence around the museum. Natural landscapes have also enchanted me—like [the resort town] José Inacio, in Uruguay, where the natural vegetation is perfect enough. Hamptons residents are all too familiar with the havoc that deer can wreak on their property. How do you create perennial gardens that are deer proof? This has become just a normal part of my life, as I have been a resident of North Haven since 1997, when my daughter Livia was born. I basically started to

5

experiment with different plants in my own backyard. I have clients who love both their deer and their flowers, like Ron Delsener. In the beginning, balancing the two was definitely a challenge. However, accomplishing this balancing act of creating beautiful landscapes full of color, with a variety of deer-resistant flowers, shrubs and trees, while remaining attractive to the wild birds and butterflies, is certainly satisfying, to say the least.

MODERNIST PARADISE Counterclockwise from above: 1. Residential landscape 2. Residential landscape 3. Residential landscape 4. Residential landscape 5. Full sun perennial garden 6. Garden surrounded by trees and shrubs

What do you imagine to be the future for sustainable landscaping? Our biggest concern for the future is maintaining and improving the water and air quality. One major step forward is through sustainable landscaping, which requires the use of less water, fertilizer or pesticides. The use of native or well-adapted plants will help make the landscape more appropriate for the natural environment and resistant to predators, soil or weather conditions. This is not a new or revolutionary concept, but it should always be kept in mind because it’s such a simple idea, and simple ideas are most often the best ideas. ✦ JUNE 2014 • AVENUE ON THE BEACH | 127

The Leader in Hamptons Architectural Design East End Visionary

J. Roth

Take a quick look at Bruce Nagel’s website and there you’ll see his approach to architecture in big, bold letters: “God is in the Details.” It’s a quote from Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, one of Nagel’s architectural heroes, of whom there are many. Whether designing a shingle-style summer cottage or a postmodern estate, Nagel follows this philosophy to create an ideal client-based solution. Another famous tool to this end is the story he asks clients to write of how they imagine their lives in their new home. The “story” details then take front and center in Nagel’s creative process. No surprise then that over his five-decade career, Nagel has often juggled multiple projects and worked in this country and abroad, with results that consistently earn him the title of “Best Architect in the Hamptons.”

You’re from San Antonio, Texas, and graduated with a master’s of architecture from Harvard. What drew you to the Hamptons? In the late ’70s I was working for [the architect] Charles Gwathmey and was the architect in charge of a very special home in Amagansett, for François deMenil. I loved the beauty and the amazing light that was present here in the Hamptons. Also, growing up in a more rural setting [Texas], I was longing to leave the city. In 1984 I was asked to do a private commission for a very large home in Greenwich, Connecticut, by Thomas Carter Evans [heir to the Coca-Cola fortune], and I used that opportunity to locate my office in East Hampton. So, in 1984, I opened my office and ever since I have been doing personal homes for many wonderful clients and loving every minute of living in the Hamptons full time. You famously instruct clients to write short stories describ-

ing their life in a new home in order to spur your creative process. Where did you get this idea from, and is it always successful? In 1986 I was hired to do a home for Sandra Wasserstein Schweitzer, sister of the famous writer Wendy Wasserstein. Sandra on her own wrote a wonderful story of the home she imagined, full of very clear images of each room and the way she imagined her life to be on a daily basis. It was inspiring and allowed me to see what she wanted, in a way I had never been able to get from clients before, by having her provide a simple “list” of her needs. So, from this, I decided to request a narrative be provided, to add a more complete view of the desires of my client. It is not always easy to get this from my busy clients, but when it is offered, I always feel the house is better. Over your enormous career, do you see a common thread that marks something of a sig2

What upcoming projects are you working on now that you are most excited about? I am currently working on a number of homes: a modern glass-pavilion-style home on Gardiners Bay; an exciting modern glass-home addition to a historic 1929 brick Georgianstyle home in the Village of Southampton; a wonderful stucco Mediterranean villa on the bay in North Haven; and a Tuscany villa on the bay in Westhampton; a classic Hamptons shingle-style home on the water in Remsenburg; and I am just completing

nature in your work, or do you find your work to be guided primarily by the clients’ desires? Of course it is impossible for me to completely remove myself from my own design preconceptions, but I work hard to remove myself as much as possible, to design a home for my clients that is “their home” and very specific to their desires and dreams of how they imagine the life to be lived there. I do this with the narrative and as many photographs of things and places they like and are drawn to. I feel that if you look at my hundreds of homes, your will see a variety of design styles. Currently, I am designing a home in a “Tuscany villa” style, and it excites me every day to be doing something different and in a particular style I personally love but have never done before.

the

When you ask about what am I most excited about—this is a hard question, as each design is very special to me and each client relationship is so special. I often tell people that I love doing homes because it is the personal relationships I develop with my clients that I love, and from these relationships develops the architectural beauty that I had the talent to create. As you have grown and matured as an architect, how has your appreciation of your architectural heroes evolved from the time you first began studying their work at Harvard? 5

If you visit my website, you will see a series of quotes from a group of architects that I have been influenced by. The list is long: ■ Michelangelo ■ Palladio ■ Sir Edwin Lutyens ■ Frank Lloyd Wright ■ Le Corbusier ■ Mies van der Rohe ■ Louis Kahn ■ Charles Gwathmey ■ Richard Meier At college I would spent hours in the library sitting at my favorite corner table poring through book after book, looking and learning from these famous architects—I felt I memorized each and every plan and elevation. But more important, I began to understand the reasons for the designs, and that architecture was art, that it speaks to people and evokes emotional responses. Architecture is so powerful in that it shapes our lives and our environment. ✦

ark Slope, like Brooklyn Heights, is quintessential Brownstone Brooklyn. This neighborhood features row houses, tree-lined streets, a farmer’s market and locally owned businesses. Fifth and Seventh avenues are the main commercial hubs for shopping and varied dining options. Midtown Manhattan is only 25 minutes away. The biggest draw is proximity to 585-acre Prospect Park. Upon completing Central Park, Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux were commissioned to design Prospect Park. Notable features include the zoo and the bandshell, which hosts free and ticketed outdoor concerts in the summer. The Park Slope Food Co-op is the largest food co-op in the country. Barclays Center, the Brooklyn Academy of Music, Brooklyn Museum of Art, Brooklyn Botanic Garden and the Brooklyn Public Library are all nearby. Premiere single blocks such as Montgomery Place showcase the architectural genius of several C.P.W. Gilbert mansions. Polhemus Place and Fiske Place offer great ambiance and architectural significance. Buildings by Rosario Candela and Richard Meier grace Grand Army Plaza. In addition, on the park are a handful of white-glove doorman buildings affording residents sweeping views. Based on closings in the 1st Quarter of 2014, the median price of a one-bedroom cooperative or condominium apartment in Park Slope was $485,000. A two-bedroom was $882,500. The median price of a townhouse was $2,100,000. There were 24 townhouses on the market in this great neighborhood, on May 1st and they ranged in asking price from $1,500,000 to $15,000,000. ✦

Summer A-List Tips for a Beautiful Smile A Conversation with Renowned Cosmetic & Integrative Dentist Dr. Gerry Curatola

What is your advice for keeping a healthy smile in the summer? 1. Remember to hydrate. Water is critical in preventing many heat-related illnesses which drain your body of water and essential minerals, making your mouth dry from a lack of saliva. 2. Follow an alkalizing and antioxidant-rich diet. The summer season is great to take advantage of your local farmers market by purchasing foods that support your oral and overall health. Eat fruit such as raspberries,

DAN DEMETRIAD

There are two signature treatments that you’ve developed at your Rejuvenation Dentistry practice on Park Avenue, that are the perfect ways to achieve the healthiest, most beautiful smile. Could you tell us more about these? Our Rejuvenation Mouth Facial™ and Rejuvenation Teeth Whitening™ processes were developed to provide cosmetic services such as dental prophylaxis and teeth whitening. Simultaneously they incorporate restorative and rejuvenating components, such as an antioxidant gum mask, a natural Himalayan salt-bath mouth rinse and a myofacial massage that incorporates three essential oils to help remove impurities, improve circulation and provide relaxation to the muscles of the TMJ and head and neck. This all happens in our spa-like environment and our patients leave having had an experience that combines the physical benefits of the treatments with the mental and emotional relaxation the adjunctive services provide.

“I believe that your dentist is on the ‘front line’ of your ability to live a longer, healthier life.” blackberries, strawberries or blueberries. Vegetables that are both alkalizing as well as antioxidant-rich are kale, broccoli and green beans. 3. Stay active. Studies have shown that people who keep an active fitness lifestyle have a lower incidence of gum disease. 4. Limit alcohol. Drinking alcohol has a powerful dehydrating effect on the body. A cold beer or frozen margarita may taste great, but it will subtly drain the body of water and minerals and, in fact, create a desire to drink more, in a misguided attempt to rehydrate. You have pioneered oral care products that are natural and bioeffective in their approach to improve the health of the mouth. Can you tell us about these? Having spent the past 16 years researching the natural ecology of the mouth, called the Oral Microbiome, has led me to develop a line of all-natural proprietary oral care products called Revitin® Oral Care (www.revitin.com) that are designed to renew, replenish, and rebalance the oral environment. We now know that the Oral Microbiome is a community of bacteria that is an essential part of our immune system, which protects us and actually keeps us alive. Many dentists and patients still believe in killing germs (bacteria) in the mouth which we now know is harmful. Revitin has shown tremendous efficacy in helping the body’s natural healing abilities.

In 2007, you launched an award-winning office, Rejuvenation Dentistry, in New York with designs for a global network of elite integrative dental practices around the world. What was your motivation for this new dental practice model? I believe that your dentist is on the “front line” of your ability to live a longer, healthier life. There has been an avalanche of research that has emerged, illustrating an important link between oral health and systemic wellness, with studies linking gum disease to heart disease, diabetes, stroke, premature birth and even cancer. As a cosmetic dentist for 30 years, I have been fortunate to improve the smiles of some of the most famous people in the world. However, I have been equally passionate about their nutrition and wellness. Being able to bring these two worlds together is the formulative philosophy of Rejuvenation Dentistry: beauty + wellness = rejuvenation. ✦

The Finest in Bespoke Designs Jennifer Tattanelli Design

What is your design philosophy? My design philosophy encompasses a mixture of fluid lines, feminine styles and luxuriousness that helps create a sense of elegance in making clients feel their best with the upmost comfort. It is always important to be fun, practical and personal; however, quality is also key, and I make sure to use only the finest materials. I also take care in modeling a piece for the client who has a particular body type and cannot find clothes that make her feel comfortable. This is a main reason why I offer custom-made and bespoke designs, I specialize in the “total look” by dressing my clients from head to toe. Nothing is more gratifying than seeing my clients thrilled . . . Accessories must be carefully crafted and conceived with attention to detail, but functionality must also be taken into consideration. I particularly like to use lamb suede for its warm touch and the feeling that it gives to the owner.

What distinguishes you from others in your field? I believe in custom-made pieces that are made from the finest Italian leathers; my “personal”

“Living in Florence, Italy, with all its art and architecture and raw materials inspires my love for colors and style, especially leather.” touch with each individual client may perhaps my strongest point. I need to know whom I am dressing and what they want. I particularly like to learn about their lifestyle and interests; that helps me understand what they’d feel best in.

Where do you find inspiration for your designs and the materials you use? Living in Florence, Italy, with all its art and architecture and raw materials 142 | AVENUE ON THE BEACH • JUNE 2014

inspires my love for colors and style, especially leather. Also, my American half influences my tastes and aesthetic awareness. Bags must last and be soft, as well as elegant; my bags and all my garments are beautifully handmade in Tuscany, and I’m very proud of this! There is also an immense amount of research for new designs and innovative materials, which makes it very exciting to be a design professional . . . I also look to the past and design leather for the present, using wonderful colors. The leather that I use for garments and bags is comfortable, because it is reversible and very light. I tend not to follow the latest trends to a tee because I want my designs to always remain in style. Perhaps my creations are more on the classical side, with a special distinctive flare. By feeling the leather that I am using, I get to tell its story; each piece should make one feel special. As for bags, I love

the woven style in particular. It takes much longer to produce but the end result is definitely worth it. Each one of my bags is handcrafted and leather strips are cut, then interwoven by hand; then a prototype is carefully designed and a sample is made up in which we then create a beautiful piece of art. Additionally, my line of shoes is something that I am extremely proud of.

Give us an example of an obstacle that came up on a project and the creative way you were able to solve the problem. There was one instance where I had a client who had many pieces and clothes custom-made; then a few months after the consignment, she contacted me saying that she’d lost a tremendous amount of weight. To solve the problem, I had her send me back a few of her pieces, and we altered them to fit. I changed the fit and style, then sent them back to her; she was thrilled because I was able to recreate a new look for her and eventually offer some new designs. ✦

The Bar Has Risen . . . for Foundation Trustees

New challenges are forcing foundations to rethink their approach to asset management

S

erving as a trustee of a foundation or endowment is often a great source of fulfillment, but it also involves oversight duties that represent an increasing set of challenges. Chief among these are the fiduciary responsibilities associated with the investment management of the organization’s assets. The 2008 financial crisis ushered in an entirely new financial market and regulatory landscape that foundation trustees and investment committees are just beginning to assess, let alone navigate. The key question they face is how to fulfill their fiduciary obligations in an era of more stringent standards, much greater scrutiny and an increasingly complex and difficult capital markets environment. AVENUE asked Hillview Capital Advisors, a New York-based investment advisory firm, to examine more closely the underpinnings of this trend and the implications for nonprofit trustees. Glen Macdonald, senior vice president, frames the issue as one revolving around fiduciary liability, investment performance and cost management.

146 | AVENUE ON THE BEACH • JUNE 2014

With respect to fiduciary standards, Macdonald cites new state laws enacted in the past few years. The first is the Uniform Prudent Management of Institutional Funds Act (UPMIFA), which has been adopted in 47 states since 2009. In addition to enhancing the prudent standard, the Act requires trustees to diversify portfolios and institute more rigorous documentation of spending and investment policies, fund-manager selection and asset allocation decisions. For New York nonprofits, in July of 2013 Albany enacted the Exempt Organizations: Nonprofit Revitalization Act. It provides additional impetus to foundation trustees to protect themselves from UPMIFA as well as the Act’s conflict-of-interest and self-dealing provisions. For investment performance, which is just as pressing as liability, the new environment may be summed up rather simply. As David Spungen, Hillview’s CEO, explains: “First off, the fear of investment missteps still lingers from the 2008 wake-up call. Secondly, financial innovation has broadened the set of choices, and added significant complexity to the investment decision-making process required to achieve targeted investment performance.” For smaller foundations and endowments (with assets under $100 million), maintaining an in-house investment team that can operate effectively in the new landscape is not a cost-effective solution, which raises yet a third challenge. Nonprofit financial staffs are overwhelmed with the increasing workload of sifting through a panoply of investment options, conducting fund-manager due diligence and monitoring and rebalancing the portfolio, while seeking to keep operating costs in check. In this context, it’s no surprise that an increasing number of foundations and endowments are electing to outsource chief investment officer (CIO) duties to a professional money management firm. In fact, 60 percent of foundations and endowments now outsource the investment management of their assets. A recent BNY Mellon/Finadium study concluded that, “Internal management of assets appears to be on the decline.” For foundations and endowments looking to outsource, a few key items to look for when selecting a firm include: • Conflict-free advice and transparency • In-house research and broad access to fund managers • Fee negotiation with underlying managers • Investment policy guidance • Ability to customize investment portfolios • Portfolio risk-management capabilities Of course the selection process must go well beyond checking capability boxes. As Jonathan Hochberg, Hillview’s president, points out: “Each nonprofit has its own unique mission, performance objectives and financial obligations. What’s most important is finding an investment firm that can be a true partner in fulfilling the organization’s charitable purpose.” ✦ HILLVIEW CAPITAL ADVISORS, LLC 777 Third Avenue ■ 28th Floor New York, NY 10017 212.661.9750 www.hillviewcap.com

HALEY FRIEDLICH

, E U N E V Dear A Kate Pickett gives us the inside scoop on Seal Harbor, Maine

Upper East Side native Kate Pickett surrounds herself with creativity and beauty. After stints in investment banking and at Harvard Business School, Kate founded Pickett’s Press—a bespoke letterpress printing company. When Pickett is not busy dreaming up new designs or helping customers put together their one-of-a-kind creations, she travels to Seal Harbor, Maine—a place she has a special affinity for, having spent summers there since childhood.

Home away from home One of my favorite places in the world is Seal Harbor, Maine. Although I grew up on New York City’s Upper East Side, Mount Desert Island, Maine, has always felt like home to me. I remember, as a child, not being able to sleep the night before our 10-plus-hour drive to the island. When we crossed the bridge onto the island, Mom would wake me up, and I’d roll down the windows and take a big breath of cold, fir-tree-scented air. That smell was heaven . . . and it is still is!

Cottage life

We stay with my mother, at her cottage. She has a heavenly garden, and now my children look forward to going each summer as much as I do! I’m an artist, and for generations artists have been drawn to the landscape of Acadia National Park. We’re lucky because my mom’s cottage is right on the border of the park, and we can walk from the house onto the carriage trails and see some of the most beautiful views in the world!

Maifavorine-stte actaysivitandies

Our activities center around family, friends and being outdoors. We love swimming and tennis on the old clay courts, and my children 160 | AVENUE ON THE BEACH • JUNE 2014

take sailing lessons at the same yacht club where I learned to sail. Summer favorites are square dances at the club on Wednesday nights and hiking up the Jordan Cliffs; and we love picking out our lobsters at Abel’s Lobster Pound and watching them cook right there. My children have been hiking up mountains on the island to pick wild blueberries since they were two—and of course baking and eating blueberry pies with my mother’s famous recipe! Also. . . there is hardly any cell coverage! So we talk and read when we aren’t doing something outside. The Seal Harbor Library is one room and 100 years old, and one of the most charming places in the world.

Insider’s guide

For the perfect day: Head straight for Acadia and get outdoors! Biking, walking or hiking are part of every day. After a hike, we like tea and popovers at the Jordan Pond House. If you can get an invitation, the Rockefeller Garden is gorgeous, and a real treat. Charter a sailboat for a day at Hinckley Yachts and see the islands by water—the best way to see them!

postcards from . . . for Pickett’s Press are hand drawn, and I sketch a lot in the summer, when I have more time. Our nautical section of designs on my website is huge. It’s impossible not to be inspired on Mount Desert Island—Frederic Church painted some of his most famous paintings right on the mountains we still climb today. For my family, we try to bring Maine home with us at the end of each summer: clean, simple living; focusing on family; healthy lifestyles. Although it’s easy to get caught up in the busy-ness of New York City, we all try to pause and slow down like we do in the summer.

A rebel and her rock For dinner, if you have a boat, you can’t beat the views from Islesford Dock on Little Cranberry Island. The food is amazing and totally organic and locally farmed. For shopping, the Kimball Shop & Boutique in Northeast Harbor is my go-to place for chic tableware and hostess gifts. My son loves golf, and the Northeast Harbor Golf Club is charming and rustic, and still open to the public. If you need a place to stay, the Asticou Inn is an island staple, with gorgeous views. We also like the historical Claremont Hotel in Southwest Harbor, which has a great dock for watching sunsets, over cocktails with friends.

My favorite souvenir is a perfectly round rock from Hunter’s Beach near Seal Harbor. But sshhh, I think it is frowned upon to take one home.

also been coming to the island for generations. The island has been a summer retreat since the 1800s, and the families all know each other. It’s so fun to watch my children developing relationships with my friends’ children, who are my parents’ friends’ children. Everyone really looks forward to connecting, since many of them live all over the world! My best childhood friend from Seal Harbor lives in Kabul, so it’s always a treat when I get to see her.

Pack like a local for Maine . . . Although many New Yorkers head to the island in the summer, it’s a very casual place. You never know when you might be hopping on a friend’s boat for a cocktail sunset sail, so wear boat shoes! And it can still get chilly at night, so I always pack warm sweaters and feet pajamas for the children. ✦

THE EAST END’S BEST RACONTEUR: DAVID H. KOCH David Koch, whose home in Southampton has been the scene of festive parties for everyone from Prince Albert of Monaco to Mitt Romney, is arguably the most interesting dinner partner on the East Coast. At the 15th Anniversary of Youth America Grand Prix, the global ballet completion that held its gala at Lincoln Center in the building that bears Koch’s name, his conversation insightfully moved between dance and art to health care and politics. When the billiondollar cache of art recently found in a Berlin apartment was brought up, he launched into a story: “My father went to Berlin during the ’20s and ’30s while he was building refineries in Germany,” Koch said. “After he married my mother, he took her there to show her the town. One afternoon, he took my mother and another couple out to tea. In walked Hermann Göring with a group of his men. Göring, a known womanizer, saw these two pretty American girls at the table and sent one of his men over to ask if they would join him. My father said, ‘Thank you very much, but we were just leaving.’ ” So, who says benefits are boring? It depends on where you’re sitting. N’est-ce pas? The dinner was hosted by another charming billionaire, Richard LeFrak, who had invited friends, including Julia Koch, Blaine Trump and Steve Simon, Hilary and Wilbur Ross, Paula and Dr. Leon Root, Peter Lyden and Ralph Rucci (who designed the costumes) to the 164 | AVENUE ON THE BEACH • JUNE 2014

event—the world premiere of LeFrak’s wife, composer Karen LeFrak’s, brilliant piece, Being Natasha. The work featured American Ballet Theatre’s dancers Sarah Lane, Skylar Brandt and Calvin Royal. But back to David Koch. When the conversation turned to the 2016 presidential election, David said, “I haven’t decided who I’m going to support yet. There are at least 10 candidates who want the job and my support. I do think there’s a 50-50 chance that the Republicans can take back the Senate.” A cancer survivor, David is passionate about his medical philanthropy, and his mission in life is to find a cure for cancer. He has pledged $750 million to cancer research. His fierce and fearless opposition to Obamacare is based on medical choice. As he confided, “I believe that Obamacare could eventually bankrupt the country.” Among those leading the applause for the evening performances by Lucia Lacarra, Misty Copeland and Olga Smirnova were co-chairs Kamie Lightburn, Heather Georges and Stephanie Foster, Charles Askegard and Judith M. Hoffman; ABT’s James Whitehead, Daisy Soros, Samuel Peabody, Deeda Blair, Amy Fine Collins; and YAGP founder Larissa Saveliev. yagp.org GIN LANE GOES TO THE DOGS At the beach, the Southampton Animal Shelter will honor Georgina Bloomberg at its annual Unconditional Love Gala on July 19th. Back in town, Georgina showed off pictures of her adorable new son Jasper at the launch party for The New York Dog, the splendid coffee table book by photographer Rachael Hale McKenna. The tome features a forward by Georgina and her five rescued dogs, Chopper, Hugo, Mabel, Mona and Stella, along with Wilbur, her rescue pig. The yummy mummy, who was being honored at Bamboo 52 by the Humane Society of New York for her animal advocacy, stated, “New Yorkers are a tough group. We take pride in breaking the rules and not being like everyone else. We put up with being called rude, egotistical, pushy, arrogant and loud. Some of us even find pride in being called so, but we New Yorkers have a secret . . . we love our dogs. We know that having dogs in our lives has softened us and keeps us human.” Among the guests toasting the honoree with Pol Roger Champagne were her mother Susan Bloomberg; HSNY president Virginia Chipurnoi; celebrity chefguru Herb Karlitz, whose company sponsored the event; Consuelo Vanderbilt Costin; Sandrade Falco; Larry Wohl and Leesa Rowland; Elaine Sargent; Maggie Norris; and Frederick Wildman and Sons’ Odila Galer-Noel. humanesocietyny.org TRUMAN CAPOTE’S GHOST WRITES IN WAINSCOT Ross Bleckner spends up to five months a year living and painting in Truman Capote’s former home in Wainscot. “It’s not haunted,” he 166 | AVENUE ON THE BEACH • JUNE 2014

You could have been around a long time, but the idea that you are still a young artist who hasn’t accomplished everything is an important thing to remember.” Although the show is titled Dome and Architecture of the Sky, Ross doesn’t credit the famous natural light on the East End said to have inspired other artists like Maxfield Parrish, Jackson Pollack, April Gornik and Donald Sultan. Instead, he said, “I don’t think it’s that important. I think that people love to talk about it; the light everywhere is beautiful. I kid around and say, ‘You carry the light around with you.’ That’s where the light really comes from.” Among those congratulating the artist on his inspirational show were Chuck Close, Eric Fischl, Calvin Klein, Ann Dexter Jones and Nicole Miller. As to the go-go-go social scene at the beach, Bleckner said, “You have to decide how much you want to circulate. When you are working, you have to work; and when you are not working, you can be out a little bit. That’s why, when people complain of all the stuff out here, I just say, ‘Close the door. Nobody is coming to your house and beating the door down and dragging you out by your hair.’” rbleckner.com ✦

ERIC RIPERT AVENUE’s back-page column asks New York notables our version of the questionnaire made famous by Marcel Proust

E

ric Ripert is a renowned chef and co-owner of the celebrated Le Bernardin. Born in Antibes, France, Ripert credits his background as the major influence for his career. That career spans multiple roles, from chef to accomplished author and television personality. Le Bernardin has ranked for over 20 years among the best restaurants in the world and has been awarded three Michelin stars. Ripert is also the chair of City Harvest’s Food Council, a nonprofit that aims to increase the distribution and quality of food donations in New York City. Ripert has been visiting the Hamptons since the mid ‘90s; here he shares with us his inspirations and musings.

WHAT’S THE FIRST THING YOU DO WHEN YOU ARRIVE IN THE HAMPTONS? I usually arrive late on Friday, after service at Le Bernardin; then I switch my sneakers for my flip flops, light a cigar, pour a scotch and watch the stars. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PART OF THE HAMPTONS? I love the wilderness of the forests, the morning walk, particularly on the Atlantic side, and watching the sunset by the bay. I enjoy all of these as well as Southampton, Bridgehampton, Easthampton, Sag Harbor and Shelter Island and everything in between!

Atlantic side in

the Hamptons

WHERE DO YOU GO TO BE INSPIRED IN THE HAMPTONS? I love to go to Flying Point every morning, I take a long walk on the beach for about an hour and a half and I smoke a cigar. I also feel inspired watching the sunset from the Elizabeth Morton Bird Sanctuary. 168 | AVENUE MAGAZINE • JUNE 2014

WHAT IS YOUR MOST MEMORABLE NEW YORK MOMENT? 7:40 a.m., June 10, 1991. I entered Le Bernardin for the first time and I knew it was a special moment, so I looked at my watch—7:40 a.m.—I will always remember the time. Nearly 24 years later, my instinct was right. Le Bernardin became a huge part of my life. WHAT’S YOUR BIGGEST EXTRAVAGANCE? Although it is not a Buddhist thing to collect Buddhas, as you’re not supposed to be attached to things, I do have a bad habit of collecting Buddhas from all over the world. The Buddhas I collect are made from wood, metal, plastic or stone, etc., and range in size from a fifth of an inch to 12 feet in height—that one I keep in the woods by my house. Mountains of Andorra

IF YOU WEREN’T A CHEF, WHAT WOULD YOU BE? When I was a kid, I grew up in Andorra, and in the middle of the mountains, where I skied a lot in the winter and then spent a lot of time climbing, hiking, fishing and foraging for things like mushrooms and berries. I love being close to nature and think I would be very happy to live the life of a forest ranger.

WHO’S YOUR HERO? I admire visionaries such as Martin Luther King, Nelson Mandela, Gandhi, His Holiness the Dalai Lama and Mother Teresa. These people have fought injustice through nonviolent means and have made a meaningful difference in our world for us to live in a better world. IF YOU COULD CHANGE ONE THING ABOUT NEW YORK, WHAT WOULD IT BE? I love New York and consider myself a New Yorker after 24 years—it’s the best city in the world; however, there are too many people struggling with hunger in this city and that’s totally unacceptable. I am very active with City Harvest, the world’s first food rescue organization, which is dedicated to helping feed the nearly two million New Yorkers facing hunger each year. WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE WAY TO GET AROUND THE HAMPTONS AND WHY? I walk when I can, but to go from place to place I mostly drive but very slowly so I can take in the surroundings! ✦
