MISSION MISSONI Heir to a fashion kingdom, actress Jennifer Missoni grew up wearing leggings or basketball shorts rather than the brand’s signature zig zags. And though she was born and raised in Italy, studied in Switzerland and speaks fluent Italian, French and English, Missoni says she’s very much a New Yorker. We peek inside her life—and home—in the big city. by whitney spaner photographs by tommaso cardile DESIGN OF THE TIMES Some of our favorite interiors by the most acclaimed designers and a peek at New York’s latest decorator darlings.

NEW WALL-TERNATIVES Like fashion, interior design trends are in one day, out the next. Today, decorating your space with wallpaper is in. Whether it’s handpainted, fabric or metallic; on the ceiling, on the floor, on a wall or on a door—these wallpaper aficionados are bringing an old-school design element into the 21st century. By no means are these your grandmother’s walls.

family’s signature boldly-colored zig zag designs, Missoni loves color, yet Cardile prefers minimal, modern black and white pieces. Somehow, the couple has managed to find the perfect balance in their apartment. Like her film roles, Missoni likes to transform herself, which is similar to the world of interior design—where the magic is always in mixing things up.

THOMAS WHITESIDE

INTERIOR DESIGN IS a lot like fashion, where trends materialize and vanish quickly—but great taste is always in style. The city’s top decorators, from legends like Jamie Drake and Ellie Cullman, to rising stars like Nina Freudenberger (her store Haus Interior on Elizabeth Street is a must-shop for everything from surreal Victorian-inspired dioramas to Aztec print bath towels) are always on the pulse and can turn the blank canvas of a room into a masterpiece of color, shape and pattern. Decorators are truly artists and when you see the work of some of our favorites, I think you’ll feel the way I do (which is wanting to re-do my front hall, bathroom and maybe just my whole apartment). While on the design frontier, we discovered that wallpaper is not at all what it used to be. Forget about staid powder rooms with a frumpy flower print on the walls. Today, wallpaper whizzes like Flavor Paper’s Jon Sherman are taking the design tool in a whole new edgy direction—wallpapering ceilings, floors and furniture, and experimenting with the medium in wild new ways. In fact, Flavor Paper’s scratch-and-sniff wall covering “Cherry Forever” (which Willy Wonka would eat up) is in the permanent collection of the Smithsonian Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum. Bored of your bedroom’s blue walls? Ring up designer Payton Cosell Turner and she can re-invent where you sleep, turning it into a psychedelic playpen with her jellybean-colored, mesmerizingly modern imagery. Speaking of the home front, we delve into the famous house of Missoni with an up close and personal interview with one of the heirs to the fashion dynasty: young actress Jennifer Missoni. We photographed her at Chateau Marmont in Los Angeles, the hot spot where she spends her time when auditioning for parts in Hollywood. My Editor’s photo is on a balcony of the Chateau, a celebrity clubhouse where I’ve had one too many cocktails in the garden with Jessica Simpson and gone midnight skinny dipping with the pop star Björk. The photos of Missoni couldn’t be more fun or frisky—probably because they were taken by her fiancé, the talented Tommaso Cardile. Missoni tells writer Whitney Spaner about her stylishly colorful family, her upcoming wedding to Cardile and exciting new roles like the controversial movie Inferno: A Linda Lovelace Story about the tragic Deep Throat porn star (which was going to once star the always-controversial Lindsay Lohan, but now has Malin Akerman playing Lovelace). You will definitely be seeing much more of this leggy beauty. When not acting in movies and television (she fittingly portrayed a W magazine editor on Gossip Girl), Missoni is busy building her nest in Tribeca and doing so with serious style (naturally), from both the sold-out Missoni for Target collection and the Missoni Home collection, along with treasures she finds from her travels all around the globe (movie stars are always on the move). Like her

Behind the Scenes

“Though I’d never even met her before, interviewing Jennifer Missoni was like getting together with a girlfriend I hadn’t seen in forever. Neither one of us could stop talking or laughing,” says Whitney Spaner, writer of this month’s cover story. Spaner moved to New York after graduating from Ohio State University where she majored in journalism and minored in theater. She is currently the Managing Editor of Paper Magazine where she combines her two passions by writing about Broadway and its stars. “Jennifer and I bonded over our love for theater and food! She’s such a beautiful person inside and out. Her soon-to-behusband Tommaso is a very lucky man,” she adds. In addition to her work at Paper and AVENUE, Spaner has written for NYCgo.com, Theatermania.com, Gilt, Vs. Magazine and New York Family magazine. She currently lives in Williamsburg, Brooklyn.

scanned the audience for bidders: “I see a big deal tennis player and Steve Schwarzman,” Niven said, and proceeded to raise $400,000 in the auction, including four Guardian scholarships, for which the kids and the patron will get to visit Tony Gilroy’s The Bourne Legacy set now filming in Brooklyn (Gilroy’s wife Susan is a board member). Of course, fashion was a wee part of the festivities. Most importantly, Ann Taylor dressed the beautiful New Yorkers for Children girls, Fekkai groomed them and their happy faces were made up in MAC cosmetics (John Demsey looked on approvingly). Sponsor St. John dressed many of the ladies; Dayssi Olarte de Kanavos looked stunning in taupe. Marina Killery was glam in spite of her matching wrist casts. “Oh—so sorry!” Beth DeWoody told her, “Who dresses you?” “Naeem Khan!” Killery happily responded. Fashion trumps disability. Zang Toi helped Julie Macklowe adjust her combo mini/trained dress and CIRCA’s CEO, Chris Del Gatto, stayed close to his girlfriend Veronica Webb, whom he met at last year’s New

ew Yorkers for Children does just about everything right. It serves foster kids in New York City efficiently, wisely and almost singularly. It is run by one of the most admired children’s administrators in the country, Susan Magazine, and it tells you all that through the voices of the kids—and at arguably the best party of the season. They also cleverly pop it in before the pounds (have they heard of Paperless Post?) of fall invites drop. Fresh, happy to see each other and even still slightly sun kissed. We are ready for a party. David Stark transformed Cipriani’s already fairly stellar room into a sparkling “Launch a Star” set. Stars were on the floor too, in the form of the sleek and shimmering Serena Williams with her pal, Rachel Roy. I waited for my car outside Cipriani, five steps under Williams—I didn’t need the further diminishment. The Nicholas Scoppetta Child Welfare award winner, New York Knicks’ Carmelo Anthony was as thrilling for the gents as he was for us—a rarity. In his elegant brown pin-striped suit and purple paisley tie (the kind of style that earned him a spot on our BestDressed list), he told us that he started his foundation to benefit kids, so that they are not defined by their past. “Wow, I’m nervous,” he said. “I haven’t been nervous in a long time.” And to the kids, who are always at the core of this event: “Count on me. I’ve got your backs.” If the miracle of saving kids isn’t enough, this event is also a fertility ritual. Ivanka Trump, resplendent in her red Carolina Herrera, said “This is my first big night out since having Arabella;” just over two months, and clearly 30 pounds ago. Board member, music impresario, and a pal of Anthony, Kevin Liles was solo for the night. His wife Erika had given birth that morning, to Genevieve. Shirin von Wulffen (aka Mrs. Frédéric Fekkai) was undetectably seven months pregnant—apart from the glow. Co-Chair, Vanessa Cornell had her fourth baby just weeks before, and the new Commissioner of Children’s Services, Ronald Richter and his partner Franklin Cogliano recently welcomed baby Maya. It is indeed a celebration of kids. Beware. Jamie Niven took to the stage and only the generous and brave eyes were un-averted. He

eptember is a month that can wreak havoc on any average New Yorker’s self-esteem. No matter how many trips to Barneys or Zoe at Bumble and Bumble you put under your belt before the start of New York Fashion Week and the plethora of galas that follow, even the most well-adjusted and organized girl is bound to suffer the after-math. This September was no exception. I thought I had a head start, at least in the retail division, thanks to an invite to the Missoni for Target launch party. The ladies of the Italian fashion house are doing a cheapie line for everyone’s favorite discount store that even those in Middle America have been clamoring about for months and I, along with Camilla Belle, Emma Roberts and the always fashionforward Amar’e Stoudemire would be the first able to get our hands on it. Unfortunately, being fashionably late wasn’t so fashionable this evening and the majority of home-wares had already been swept away. When I got there, Elizabeth Olsen was still casually strolling the top floor of the pop-up store with a pal, away from the makeshift VIP area, as if she doesn’t happen to be the younger sister of mega-millionaire twins Mary-Kate and Ashley. Unlike her older sisters, the actress and New York University grad is chatty and friendly with the press, her smiling face happily answering their questions. A star is born. While the torrential downpour outside didn’t seem to be crushing anyone else’s dreams of Missoni for Target bath towels, I opted out of stocking up and convinced myself I’ll do it at a later date. My mistake. Once the store opened to the public, the merchandise, including a $399 bicycle, is totally sold out all over New York. Instead, the products start popping up on eBay and with some pieces priced at over a grand, it is the couture equivalent of ticket scalping. My second pre-Fashion Week mistake came that same evening at the Fendi O party at the Standard Hotel—a joint fête for the “re-opening” of the Boom Boom Room. The club is packed with the fashion flock. Too packed, and I’m in flats. My head reaches the jutting clavicles of the models that weave in and out of Lauren Santo Domingo, Stavros Niarchos with his girlfriend Jessica Hart, and Terry Richardson trying to balance his camera, a drink and the photogenic crowd. Movie-maker Paul Haggis awkwardly gets his belt stuck on another male party-goer, bumping the duo into a train of giraffe-like beauties just as singer Lykke Li hits her first note— and I head for the door. It’s true what they say: the view’s better from the top. If only I had planned ahead that evening. I’m better prepared on Fashion’s Night Out at the Valentino store on Madison Avenue in a pair of sky-high platforms. Tracy

Morgan impresses a private karaoke party as an enthusiastic emcee, taking over the mic at every lull. Candice Bergen and her daughter, Vogue employee Chloe Malle, Pras and crowd-pleaser Natalie Cole all join Morgan on the mic. Morgan showed a softer—and slightly cringe-inducing—side during a personal rendition of U2’s “With Or Without You.” Pointing to his date, he dedicated the more personal lyrics to the nameless beauty, until another party guest finally joined him at the mic. Later in the month, it’s revealed at the Emmys that his date is now Morgan’s fiancée—model Megan Wallover. Apparently love isn’t blind, it’s tone-deaf. Five days of parties and a stream of fashion shows later, it’s time for a serious break. And what’s more serious than. . .Westchester? I think I’m seeking solace by attending the 5th Annual Eric Trump Foundation Gala, until I run smack into Amanda Seyfried as soon as I walk through the doors. “Can you see my underwear through [my dress?]” the wideeyed beauty asks the snappers. They assure her you can’t. I think I found my new girl crush—until I see Ivanka Trump wearing a Zara dress straight off the rack. The whole event feels like it’s giving the finger to Fashion Week—it’s the opposite of a Marc Jacobs front row. Speaking of MJ, the designer’s after-after party at Nur Khan’s Electric Room is far from a self-esteem boost. Maybe it’s because the room is filled with models who look like they just clocked out from their day jobs as they saunter around Mick Jagger and his gorgeous girlfriend, designer L’Wren Scott. Add Ellen Barkin, Daphne Guinness and the erratic Fashion Week staple Lindsay Lohan into the mix, and you have yourself a party. Liam McMullan, the floppyhaired son of society photographer Patrick McMullan, has been able to go where nearly no man has gone so far that evening: he has breached Mick’s security camp. Quite the feat considering the Rolling Stone’s bodyguard is acting as if he is protecting the President. But McMullan tells me his father has known Mick for years. So how did Liam get the nerve to approach? I ask, eyeing the Jagger task force and the surprisingly awkward herd of A-listers circling the singer, hoping to get a chance to chat with him— a privilege only Barkin, Guinness and Courtney Love have been granted thus far. “I made him do it,” Aesha Waks, McMullan’s fiancée explained. Liam asked for his advice as a musician (the younger McMullan plays the guitar). Fast forward to Tuesday and my slightly vertically-challenged self is secretly happy the majority of models have been shipped overseas to continue the cycle of fashion weeks. But I should have known better than to breathe a sigh of relief. As soon as I entered the newly opened Hôtel Americano for the Brazil Foundation IX Gala after party, I was bombarded with more plastic than a Mattel factory. Gorgeous glamazons are swarming around me, all looking like they stepped out of a Victoria’s Secret catalogue. Apparently, the after party only brought out a handful of the Brazilian babes. A pal tells me the gala, held prior to the party at the New York Public Library, drew Alessandra Ambrosio, Fernanda Motta and Natalia Vodianova along with fashion-great, Valentino. A girl can’t win, can she? Or maybe I just need to get some higher heels. F

illiam Randolph Hearst’s granddaughter, Anne Hearst, and her husband Jay McInerney invited 50 friends to San Simeon for a glamorous weekend of festivities to benefit the Hearst Castle Preservation Foundation (www.hearstcastle.org). Dining in the famed refectory where Cary Grant and Charlie Chaplin once frolicked were Jon Lovitz, Alison Mazzolla, George Farias, Wendy Stark, Tony Peck and Janna Bullock. Guests got to view the elephant seals on the beach and swim in the Neptune Pool, which is never open to the public. Candace Bushnell sang with the band at the ho-down while Anne line danced with her son Randy Harris, Joe Tobin, Cynthia Ott, Jim Coleman, Jim Signorelli, Paola Bacchini, Arnold Rosenshein and Patrick McMullan. Guests went home with wines from Brewer-Clifton and Melville vineyards and Eton of Sweden ties. Sharon Stone was among the event’s patrons. Richard and Karen LeFrak, a composer who is also on the board of the New York Philharmonic, took two boxes for the Phil’s opening night (www.nyphil.org). The brilliant concert under the baton of Alan Gilbert was followed by a dinner in a tent illuminated by lighting guru Bentley Meeker who had just lit a party for President Obama at Gotham Hall. Among the LeFraks’ guests were Jamee and Peter Gregory, Joanne and Roberto de Guardiola and the heavenly Deborah Voigt, who sang R. Strauss’ Salome and brought the audience to their feet. Daphne Guinness told me “It’s very strange to see a 100 of me on display, every dress has a sexy story behind it. I almost jumped up and joined them.” The occasion was the opening of the FIT exhibition of the couture dresses she’s collected (www.fitnyc.edu). The designer Maggie Norris estimated the clothes were worth between $5 and $10 million. The collection makes her a modern day MarieAntoinette—who kept hundreds of seamstresses employed making her elaborate gowns. The show features twelve dresses by Alexander McQueen and should not be missed. It runs through January 7, 2012. Guests included Couture Council board member Michele Gerber Klein, Dr. Nicholas Toscano and Frances Hayward. Emma Thompson claims that her Savoir bed cured her insomnia. The bespoke creations have been made in England for 106 years. If you’ve stayed at the Savoy Hotel in London like Marilyn Monroe, Edward VII and Elizabeth Taylor, you now know why you slept so well. Liza Minnelli and King Hussan of Morocco liked theirs so much they insisted on taking them home. Savoir’s Alistair Hughes and Roger Ericson invited the crème de la crème down to their Soho showroom to unveil three unique beds designed by Matthew Patrick Smyth, Carl D’Aquino and Helen Amy Murray. Princess Yasmin Aga Khan said, “I couldn’t feel a pea under this divine mattress if I wanted to” referencing the Hans Christian Andersen classic The Princess and the Pea. A pale yellow leather Savoir bed was auctioned off at her annual Alzheimer’s Association Rita Hayworth Gala. It’s the only way really. Chris Evans who displayed all his charms in Captain America stars in Puncture, a compelling film about a health care conspiracy. The post premiere party hosted by Gucci was held in Co-Op’s glass duplex penthouse in the Hotel on Rivington. Among the revelers were Jennifer Missoni, Charlotte Ronson, Shaun White and the film’s directors Mark and Adam Kassen. The Little Shelter, one of Long Island’s oldest no-kill animal centers held a Fur-rari Rally at Ferrari of Long Island’s new event space. The event featured a delicious brunch by Andrea Correale’s Elegant Affairs. Guests included plastic surgeon Dr. Robert Grant, Cindy Guyer, Jonathan Goldberg and Maserati’s Laura Fisher. Who else would tell you these things? F

Okay I admit it; I am infatuated with all things Andy. Warhol, that is. His world renowned, groundbreaking pop art completely floats my boat. I don’t care that his appeal has trickled down to the key ring and refrigerator magnet arenas. I don’t care that he appears a nasty sort of fellow in every documentary and movie ever made about him. His art makes me smile from ear to ear and back again! Upon his untimely death, Warhol’s business manager, Fred Hughes, offered artist David Gamble the sole chance to photograph the silkscreen superstar’s 66th Street townhouse interiors. Gamble has since created a unique and striking homage series of over-sized C-prints of these treasured photographs. This one, entitled Andy Warhol’s Living Room, features the Factory-father’s parlor with a neon image of the artist superimposed in his favorite chair. Notice the impressive Lichtenstein Laughing Cat—a favorite piece of Andy’s. Equally captivating in this collection is Andy Warhol’s Medicine Cabinet which reveals the offbeat icon’s beauty products of choice. Anything that gets me this close to possibly understanding what made Mr. Warhol tick is tragically chic to me!

SWIFTY BUSINESS How a business deal for the movie In Cold Blood turned cold and bloody

Swifty Lazar hitting Otto Preminger over the head with a glass; an illustration from AVENUE’s May 1992 issue

Fair warning: this story ends in stitches.

C

an you imagine if Frank Sinatra had been in In Cold Blood? He’s way more swoonworthy than Robert Blake. The 1967 film had quite the drama surrounding it when, in 1966, Swifty Lazar (with a name like that, wouldn’t you assume he’d scam you?) sold the film to Richard Brooks (for an outrageous $500,000 plus 30 percent of the net) instead of Otto Preminger, who had wanted to produce the film and cast Sinatra. When the two went out to dinner with their wives at the 21 Club, they had quite the argument

40 | AVENUE MAGAZINE · NOVEMBER 2011

which had even, at the time, made it onto the pages of the Journal American. Furious that Lazar had underhandedly sold the film to someone else, Preminger used the notoriously ill-tempered Sinatra as a threat, saying “When Sinatra sees you, he is going to punch you in the nose.” Lazar attempted the old “it’s just business” excuse, but apparently that wasn’t the thing to do with Preminger. Outraged, Preminger retorted and the men continued to bicker about their failed business deal until the five-foot-three Lazar rose to warn the six-foot-tall Preminger: “I didn’t sit here to be needled by you.” Preminger then demanded a tele-

phone—he was calling Sinatra. Can you imagine? The balding Hollywood duo’s battle continued as Lazar’s scalp turned pink when he shouted, “I don’t think we have to take this!” Witnesses then reported hearing someone utter “Liar!” right before Mrs. Lazar put in her own two cents by slapping Preminger, who didn’t even get a chance to get on his feet before Mr. Lazar hit him over the head with a water glass. The Lazar’s left abruptly, while a bleeding Preminger was led to the men’s room, shouting “I want that ****** arrested!” He was taken to New York Hospital where he received 50 stitches. F

Miss Missoni With her famously fashionable heritage, 26-year-old Jennifer Missoni has style built into her DNA, but instead of delving into the family business of designing clothes, Missoni is launching herself onto the silver screen with movie roles opposite stars like Matt Dillon, Malin Akerman and Christian Slater. Though she was raised in Italy and is often in Hollywood, Missoni lives in New York with her fiancé Tommaso Cardile (who shot these intimate photographs at Los Angeles’ iconic Chateau Marmont). Here, Missoni opens up about her chic family, her upcoming wedding and talks about her favorite things that decorate her Tribeca apartment. Welcome to Casa Missoni.

I

t’s a good time to be Jennifer Goldie Diamante Missoni. Though one could argue it’s always a good time to be the heir to a major fashion house, 2011 has really turned out to be the 26-year-old’s year. She got engaged to director, photographer and all-around Renaissance man, Tommaso Cardile, and having foregone the fashion industry for the big screen, her acting career is really starting to take off. In February of 2011, the leggy brunette waltzed through a three-episode guest spot on Gossip Girl; this year she began filming Inferno: A Linda Lovelace Story about the porn actress who starred in Deep Throat; and soon, she’ll see the release of Playback, a thriller she filmed with Christian Slater. Missoni’s happiness is immediately apparent when I meet her at her favorite coffee shop, 71 Irving Place, a cozy nook near Gramercy Park. At 5’10” she has striking model-like features, but is as warm and appealing as the green citrus tea she urges me to try. “It’s my favorite tea and they only sell it here,” she says, and I don’t even look at the menu before getting a cup of my own. On the table is the book she’s reading, her grandfather’s autobiography, and it’s clear that much of her warmth comes from the hearth that is her big Italian family. The Missoni fashion label is known for brightly colored woven knitwear and its equally colorful and tightly-knit founding family. Started in Varese, Italy by Missoni’s grandparents Rosita and Ottavio Missoni in 1953, the line is now run mostly by their children. Their daughter Angela took over as Creative Director in 1998, their son Vittorio is Missoni’s Marketing Director and their other son Luca (Jennifer’s father) once designed the menswear collection but now helps to oversee the business side of things. Angela’s daughter Margherita became a well-known New York socialite as the face of the brand and now lives in Milan where she helps her mother in the design process. But Jennifer knew early on that she had no interest in working in the family business. “Growing up I knew that my family made clothes but it never occurred to me that it was something that I could do. It was just never something I

was interested in,” she admits. “I was the girl in school who dressed like a guy: basketball shorts with hideous white Nike socks up to my calves. I wore leggings with holes in them all the time because they were my favorite leggings. People would be like, ‘Doesn’t your family make clothes? Can’t they make you some new pants?’ But they were my favorite ones!” Missoni also confessed that she never really liked playing dress up as a kid. “It was more about costumes and wigs. It wasn’t about the clothes—it was about the characters.” Despite her lack of interest in the fashion business, her family is “the most important thing” to her. Her father lives full-time in Italy and her mother is back and forth between their home there and New York. Mrs. Missoni is from Riverdale, so though Missoni was raised in Varese, she and her teenage brother Michelangelo and 15-year-old sister Madeleine (who was born with Down Syndrome and attends a special school in Philadelphia) do not have Italian accents. Missoni and Cardile first met as young children as their

families are old friends. “I could never be with anybody that didn’t have a solid family,” Missoni says. “It all comes from them being able to love unconditionally, because they’ve been loved that same way.” Cardile’s unconditional love for Missoni began six years ago when he attempted to hit on her at a party in New York, then quickly realized who she was. “He told me the other night that it was love at first sight when he saw me that night. Five years we’ve been together and I’m like, ‘you never told me that!’” Missoni had another boyfriend at the time but after they broke up, Cardile made his move. “One night he told me he liked me and I started laughing. I was like, ‘what are you talking about?’ After we kissed, I was still laughing and he said, ‘Do you like it when I kiss you? Or do you feel repulsion? Please tell me. I need to know.’ I fell in love with him when he said that. He’s so funny. We moved in right away. It just felt right.” At age 16, Missoni began coming to New York regularly to study acting with Susan Batson, staying with her grandparents

in Riverdale and taking the train to Manhattan for class. Growing up in Italy, Missoni says entertaining came naturally. “When my parents would have dinners I would dress up and pretend that I was the pianist that they hired. I really believed that I’d be able to convince people that I wasn’t their daughter, even though they [guests] knew me. I also used to go to fashion shows wearing a wig and pretend I was a journalist.” At 19 she moved to the city for good. “New York is my city. I love the energy of New York and I want to build a life here with Tommaso as we’ve been doing,” she says. The couple share a loft in Tribeca, which Missoni is eager to redecorate with wedding presents. “I feel like we’ve

store in Los Angeles. Missoni has starred in several of Cardile’s non-fashion related short films and in April they jetted off to Las Vegas for a 48-hour short-film contest. In addition to shooting this story, Cardile has taken some smoldering shots of Missoni for GQ Italia. “I hope that we can do a lot of things together,” says Cardile. “It’s just fun to hang out with Jen, so for me spending time with her, regardless, is quality.” Swoon! Missoni’s career trajectory has been very New York-centric as well. With her long, silky brown hair bleached blonde, she played a Russian prostitute and an abused wife on Law & Order and Law & Order: Criminal Intent, respectively, and starred in the off-Broadway comedy, Angry Young Women In Low Rise Jeans With High Class Issues. “I really want to do more theater. It was one of those moments in my life that is very important to me,” she recalls. Then there’s her recent turn on Gossip Girl, which happens to be one of Missoni’s favorite shows. “Honestly, I am such a big fan,” she admits. She had auditioned for a year and a half before finally getting cast as Donna, one of Blair Waldorf ’s bosses at W magazine. “That was the seventh character I’d read for, so by then I was like, seriously, whatever, I’m not going to get this one either,” she laughs. “The last time I went in I said to the casting director ‘Are they getting sick of me?’ And she said, ‘No, they love you they’re just trying to find the right role—and we think this will be the right role.’” It turns out the part was also serendipitous for Gossip Girl star Leighton Meester. When Missoni met Meester—aka Blair Waldorf— her first day on set, Meester expressed sadness that she could not be a part of the Missoni Spring 2011 campaign (which she thought was shooting that day in London). Missoni informed her that the shoot had in fact been changed to the next day. “Had I not been on set that day she never would have been in the campaign, so that was really weird,” says Missoni. The campaign, shot by Juergen Teller, has a playful ‘70s feel with Meester riding a rocking horse in an arty rec room and sporting a colorful winged frock. Thank goodness for GG’s fashionable guest stars. Missoni’s life in New York may be pretty fabulous, but she spends about four months out of the year in L.A. and says the balance between the coasts is important. “I’ve been doing a lot of auditions in L.A. which has been great because I wouldn’t have gotten the jobs I’ve gotten if I hadn’t done that. Eventually I’d like to get a small apartment, but now that I’m young, I stay with a friend and rent a car. When you’re young you have the energy to move around like that and pack and unpack. It’s stressful, but at the same time I’m there because I want to be there,” she says earnestly. “Before I had an agent and a manager all I wanted to do was audition and you can’t audition unless you have representation, so being out there

“I want to fall off the wagon and just become fat and live in, like, Sicily or something—be a fat grandma in Sicily.” —Jennifer Missoni both outgrown our furniture.” And as Italians living in New York, food is of utmost importance. They often go out to eat, everywhere from the macrobiotic haven, Souen, to the Brazilian steakhouse, Churrascaria, to low-key nights at Whole Foods. “When it comes to food I don’t fuck around,” says Missoni. And she wants what she wants when she wants it. “If I don’t get what I want I get very upset,” she says matterof-factly. “If I want Brussels sprouts, I will walk all the way over there even though I could get something else that’s here because I want those Brussels sprouts. I’m crazy.” But being young and connected New Yorkers, Cardile says many of their date nights end up being events for their friends, who include New York’s fashion elite as well as a healthy amount of Italian imports. In fact, it was a party at the National Arts Club, for creative director and girl-abouttown, Kate Schelter, where Cardile and Missoni first reconnected. “We go to many fun events together like movie premieres and cocktail or dinner parties for friends,” Cardile says. They also collaborate creatively. Cardile makes fashionrelated videos for Italian Vogue and one such film he made last summer was of “Jen” (as Cardile calls her) at the Missoni

and having opportunities is amazing. In the last year I’ve had opportunities that I’ve never had before in terms of the rooms I’ve been able to walk into,” says Missoni, though she’s quick to add: “but, I want to stay in New York and have this as my home.” And, of course, there’s the occasional getaway to Italy. “I get this thing where I need my Italy fix,” says Missoni. “I don’t really crave dairy but when I’m in Italy I need cheese. I love going to lunch at my grandparents’ house. They’re just the never-ending lunches that just go on and on. It’s just so beautiful to spend a week there, but then when I come back here I’m like, ‘I need wheatgrass!’” Missoni and Cardile are still working out the details of their wedding, but it will most likely be an Italian affair. With family located all over the world, and pilot season and Fashion Weeks to consider, it’s been hard to nail down a date. The opposite of a Bridezilla, Missoni’s not too worried. “At first I thought we’d get married on the beach with a few friends and takeout or something—you know, with the aluminum containers,” she says. “Then all my friends started getting married and we started to go to all these weddings. It’s so inspiring to be around that celebration of love and you think, ‘Yeah, why not?’ We’ve had so much fun talking about it. It’s all we do.” But one thing is certain, her famous family will not be making her dress. “They don’t specialize in wedding dresses. I know they’d make something beautiful but it wouldn’t be the right fabric and everything. . .” As we finish our tea, the night doesn’t seem as cold and rainy as it did on the way there. Missoni’s happiness is contagious. She’s looking forward to the year ahead of her, but that’s not to say she doesn’t think about a time when she can just sit back, reflect and, well, eat. “I want to fall off the wagon and just become fat and live in, like, Sicily or something—be a fat grandma in Sicily.” F

Casa Missoni An inside look at Jennifer Missoni’s personal treasures

When Jennifer Missoni is taking a break from guest-starring on Gossip Girl or traveling the world, the first place you would be most likely to find her would be wrapped up in a cozy wool blanket in the living room of her and her fiancé’s Tribeca loft. The couple has done the best they can to combine their very distinct tastes into a home that is “sophisticated and yet still cozy and inviting.” Though the pair is very happy in their current abode, with a wedding on the way, they are eagerly anticipating decorating a new space. “Basically, I moved into his space when we first moved in together,” Missoni explains. “I brought a lot of elements from my past and of

course he had his, but we didn’t have the opportunity to create a home together.” After their nuptials, the pair won’t be moving far. In fact, the move will only require a quick elevator ride up to a different floor in the building they have come to love so much. “We’re just really excited about creating a new space for ourselves—together.” Though Jennifer admits she certainly never had any plans to follow in the footsteps of her famous family, she does carry the very Missoni-esque penchant for bright colors and bold patterns; an aesthetic that definitely does not mirror that of her husband-to-be. “[Tommaso’s] very minimal and likes everything in black and white.

We will definitely have to find a balance. We’re very opposite when it comes to that,” Missoni admits. That should not be hard, what with the Missoni Home collection and Missoni for Target collection providing all the necessary trimmings for a much-needed splash of excitement. We sat down with Missoni to discuss her favorite pieces from the collections, her secret hideaways and the essential items to have in your home. What is an absolute must-have in your home? A big, comfy couch is definitely a must—and a big TV. My favorite thing is just curling up under a cozy blanket on a cold day and watching movies. Also, a big dining table. Tommaso is an amazing cook and we love having dinner parties. Those three things are fundamental items for me. When it comes to designing your home, where do you draw inspiration? Definitely my grandmother Rosita, she is the designer behind the Missoni Home collection and really just has such great ideas in terms of what to do with a space and where to place things. She has her own way of seeing things that is very smart and intuitive. We will definitely want her to be a big part of decorating our new space when we move.

architecture, and so do I, but it has to incorporate other elements of style to make it livable because sometimes it can feel really cold and that’s just not me. Is art an important part of your home? Yes, there are a lot of pieces throughout our home. Most of them are Tommaso’s drawings and paintings. I really love his work. There’s one drawing that he did of me reading a book and I love it so much. I think he really captures the essence of the people who pose for him and it’s definitely my favorite piece of art that’s hanging on our walls. What did you end up taking home for yourself from the Missoni for Target line? Well, I’m eagerly awaiting the arrival of my bicycle. But in terms of house wares, I definitely thought more in terms of what I needed as opposed to what I want or thought looked cute. I got a lot of dishes and blankets and things like that for our home. And I’m sure there will be pieces from the Missoni Home collection for you? There is a limited edition piece they are doing for Christmas this year. It’s a pouf ottoman that’s all handmade crochet. It’s very unique. I definitely think it will be a collector’s item. It’s so great because one of the most unique things about the collection is that each pattern and texture is created to communicate with another pattern so they all complete a mood or a story when they’re put together. I’m really excited to put that into practice in our new space. F

Do you have a favorite room in any of the homes you have lived in? There’s a room that I love in the house that I grew up in, in Italy. It was my parents’ library and it was the most amazing room. There’s nothing I love more than sitting on that couch on a winter day, watching the snow through the windows and being in that library. I love it so much. Is that something you want to emulate in your own home? I think one day I would really love to have a house—and a room like that. But in the meantime, I think the most you can do is make the entire space as cozy as possible. Tommaso really loves modern NOVEMBER 2011 · AVENUE MAGAZINE | 55

Flavor Paper On the cutting edge of a wall design movement, Flavor Paper opened in New Orleans back in 2004. At the time, it was only one of three custom wallpaper firms. With free equipment from a wallpaper company that went out of business in Portland, Oregon, Flavor Paper now creates fine hand-screened wallpaper using the techniques and tools from years ago. The designs are creative, bold patterns with an emphasis on modernizing looks from the ‘70s. Flavor Paper’s printing process has become a sort of street art, as overhead mirrors in the front windows allow pedestrians to view the printing operation right at its lab in Cobble Hill, Brooklyn. The new generation of wallpaper designers include owner Jon Sherman—who designs, fabricates and markets hand-screened wall coverings. Projects have included Lenny Kravitz’s New Orleans abode to Frank Gehry’s IAC Building. Flavor Paper’s unique impact comes from their use of vibrant water-based ink colors that are rarely used by other wallpaper companies. Its dyes are PVC-free and scraps go to local schools. Flavor Paper has 52 standard patterns along with custom-designed wall papers that are shipped all over the world. In addition, Flavor Paper’s scratch-and-sniff wall covering, Cherry Forever, is displayed in the permanent collection of the Smithsonian’s Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum.

Cosell’s designs look traditional from far away, but many of her creations (her sticker patterns, for example) are refined yet cheeky. Last August, Cosell launched her own company, Flat Vernacular, with fiancé Brian Kaspr. The two create original hand-drawn, hand-printed and bespoke wallpapers— they are faithful to the tradition and character of wallpaper but keep it current by adding modern flair to the actual designs. DESIGNER PROFILE

bjorn bjornsson, bjorn bjornsson interior design What was your most successful or unique project this past year? Within the past year, I would have to say it’s a 15,000 square-foot home in North Carolina being built from the ground up. Still in progress, this house is going to be in French Country Traditional and definitely separates itself from anything else I have worked on this year. When complete, its grandeur and beauty will go above expectations and will be one of our most celebrated spaces of this year. What do you consider your expertise? I’m an expert at walking into a space and seeing what others can’t see. I don’t see what’s existing, I see what’s forthcoming. In my mind I have already changed it up. I know what should remain, what should go and in what direction the project should go in. My creative side kicks in that quickly. Does your work carry a signature that is unique to your designs? Yes, I actually have more than one signature. The first, which is in most of my projects, is creating lighting coves. I like to have an illusion going on in the ceiling that always brings a sense of sophistication to a room. My second would be custom paint; I love creating new colors with different textures. Clients seem to enjoy the idea that their friends and neighbors can’t just go pick it up at their local paint store. People just love to say “It’s custom made just for this room!” Have you noticed any trends in your field? What are people asking for? Trends change all the time and people typically ask for what the current trend is at that moment. If it’s a good trend, I will incorporate this in my design. What I don’t want is for my client to go with a trend that will tire quickly. I create classic spaces that clients can enjoy for years to come. Describe your clientele: is it international? What kind of design demands or ideas are specific to New Yorkers? My clientele is diverse. Since I’m from Iceland I began my career in Europe and worked my way to L.A. while maintaining clients abroad. By the time I arrived in New York I felt pretty worldly. I had clients in Japan, Denmark, France, the West and East coasts. But at the end of the day it doesn’t matter; they all want the same end result—a beautiful space. The demands I mostly get from New Yorkers are about how we can make the space more efficient. Whether they have a 5,000 square-foot home or a 1,200 square-foot home, they all want to utilize their space to the fullest. Everything should be functional and feel right. After all, this is New York and New Yorkers’ homes are their castle. What’s the most exciting part of your job? What keeps you going each day? The excitement for me is the beginning and the end. When a new client comes to me with their project it always gets my blood pumping. I feel like I’m given a blank canvas every time. I get to incorporate who I am into each and every job and leave my mark. At the end of the project, it’s watching the client’s expression. When I succeed in combining their requests with my designs, I get a rewarding feeling which is priceless!

What was your most successful or unique project this past year? This past year I launched the Tempo Luxury Home Collection which features home accessories including hand-blown glass lighting, 100% silk rugs derived from my watercolor paintings, occasional furniture, as well as art and photography. We have had a very positive response and our collections are growing each season. With my background in art, design, film, graphics, fabrication and textiles, the union of my interior design business with the new addition of Tempo Luxury Home has been quite a gift. This venue has allowed me to continue exploring as the demand for our product increases. What do you consider your expertise? I pride myself in original design and one-of-a-kind creations. Being as diverse as I am in the industry, I always encourage my clients to create something unique rather than source something “on the showroom floor.” In return, I get a client who is thrilled with the outcome and excited to be a part of the design process. Where do you find inspiration for your designs? Nature, the street and interactions between people—as complex or as simple as it may seem. I draw inspiration from my daily and worldly experiences; from the city to the country. The movement of light, how it bends, reacts, refracts, or the lack there of, plays an integral part in all my design concepts and the vision created. Does your work carry a signature that is unique to your designs? Our interiors carry a distinctive hand-made sense of craftsmanship evident in our unique material applications and custom design fabrications. In my drawings, you can see the visual process of how one idea leads to the next. My work spans multiple platforms from my paintings to the interiors and

JOE GINSBERG DESIGN 307 West 38th Street ■ New York, NY 10018 ■ 212.465.1077 ■ www.joeginsberg.com

collections I design. That is the one unifying factor in all my work: never getting tired of the challenges it takes to achieve a successful project. Have you noticed any trends in your field? What are people asking for? I am committed to creating my own trend. I believe that what I can deliver to my clients is timeless. Our work is created with thought, love, our bare hands and the perfect imperfections that come with it. These elements make our designs current yet classic, no matter what the style may be. Do you have any funny anecdotes you can share? Any unusual requests from a client? One that comes to mind is the time when I was asked to create a painting for my client’s daughter’s bedroom, which was a dream in and of itself. As the story goes, I took time aside to put myself in the eyes of child and be lifted just as they are carried away each and everyday. I titled it Haven, a place where books and UFOs come together. Depicting the most fanciful scenario, the day came where it was time to be installed and my client’s seven-year-old daughter swore that she painted it with me. All I could do was smile from the inside out and tell the mother earnestly, “Of course she did, she was with me the whole time I painted it.”

inson dubois wood, inson dubois wood, llc Where do you find inspiration for your designs? I am inspired by my professors and mentors; I was fortunate to study architecture at Harvard while Frank Gehry, Rem Koolhaas, Zaha Hadid and Wolf Prix were all there. They were tremendous proponents of creativity and emphasized being true to yourself. These pioneers of design constantly encouraged me to try new things. I am also influenced by two maverick designers, David Easton and Juan Pablo Molyneux, and have worked closely with both. Finally, masters ranging from Michelangelo to Le Corbusier and Mongardino to Pierre Chareau are great precedents for the use of light and materials. Living and traveling throughout Europe and Asia and seeing these timeless masterpieces has left an indelible impression that carries into my work.

Does your work carry a signature that is unique to your designs? My signature style is about a holistic and balanced approach. Above all, I value a room that reflects the proper proportions. Good design stems from good architecture; if your lines are clean and well composed, the composition will flow. Have you noticed any trends in your field? What are people asking for? I have noticed many clients are gravitating to a more simplified palette and natural materials. There is a renaissance in getting back to basics with earth tones and natural materials such as stone, wood, leather, cottons, wools and silks. That said, it’s quite chic to introduce color by using accents such as paintings, sculpture, Venetian plaster accent walls, window treatments, pillows and accessories. The final touch comes with custom lighting, often made of bronze and hand blown glass. What's the most exciting part of your job? What keeps you going each day? Every project is different. I like to keep it exciting by mixing in Parisian flea market finds with contemporary art. I absolutely love a challenge. When designing someone’s home, it’s never boring. Do you have any exciting projects on the horizon? I am participating in a designer showhouse, Holiday House NYC, to sponsor the Susan G. Komen for the Cure. The showhouse will take place in a fabulous 60-feetwide Beaux Arts townhouse at 3 E. 62nd between Madison and Fifth Avenue. Mixing Jeff Koons’ art with Modern and Neoclassical Interiors, it will be open to the public November 16 through December 10.

What was your most successful or unique project this past year? My most exciting project has been the architecture and design on the interior of two interconnected chalets in Gstaad with a private hammam and indoor pool, 30 meters in length. This is the reinvention of chalet style. What do you consider your expertise? My expertise is a blending of the 18th through the 21st century design styles to create informed layered interiors that are haute couture. Though this doesn’t mean that everything is bespoke, as it is the combinations that one choreographs that are bespoke. Working with the craftsmen is one of the reasons I love my job because I have the opportunity to push so many boundaries. The development of ideas working together allow for thinking outside the box and seeing beyond just one’s own eyes. Does your work carry a signature that is unique to your designs? An artistic editing is what signifies my work as seen through the eyes of my clients, making it uniquely theirs. Have you noticed any trends in your field? I find great decoration to be like a hem line, it goes up and down depending on the woman you are dressing. So much is about fit, form, program and function. I don’t like to think of trends because I think you really are creating something organic that becomes very natural to the person or place in the end. That said, we are all inspired by moments within the time we live in. I can be inspired as much by an architect of fashion, an architect of design and decoration, or even just a place. Describe your clientele: is it international? My client base is mostly in the U.S. and Canada, with a few Europeans. New York clients are very lifestyle-centric to the way they approach a project. They are coming to you from a very informed background having done their meticulous homework. Because our New York clients are so busy, they have functional requirements that create layers of information that need to be distilled and placed into the context of what we do. What is your dream project? My dream client is someone with extraordinary culture, passion and compassion looking to create something truly unique. I love gardens so designing a garden in addition to the interiors of the home would be a dream come true! A client’s love of art is also a component that stimulates and motivates me to no end! What’s the most exciting part of your job? What keeps you going each day? My unbridled curiosity and the collaborations with my clients—getting to know them inside out is what inspires me.

What was your most successful or unique project this past year? The Metropolitan Museum of Art asked us to renovate the Patrons Lounge and Library. Not only was it our favorite this year, it was one of our favorite projects of all time. The space was looking tired and old; we gave it a facelift to make it feel younger and a bit more contemporary. Recently, we’ve been reinventing a large midcentury modern house in Sharon, Connecticut, which has been great fun. What do you consider your expertise? We engage in a dialog with our clients. We really listen. What are their needs? What are their hopes for the project? Then we show them how these needs can be met, in ways they

had never thought possible, reflecting their own personal style in the design. Where do you find inspiration for your designs? A lot of our inspiration comes from travel to foreign countries. You never know when a shape, pattern or color might spark a new idea. We are also collectors and spend a lot of time just looking at things. The inspiration to solve a design problem can appear in the most unlikely places and objects. Does your work carry a signature that is unique to your designs? Our work tends to be a statement about the client, more than about us. We use a lot of color, because color makes people feel good. Every client should look their absolute best in their living room.

Have you noticed any trends in your field? What are people asking for? One of the most important trends in our field is sustainable design. We try to specify products that are kind to the environment. Lighting is turning to LED bulbs that are super energy efficient. What is your dream project? Our dream project is the next one. What's the most exciting part of your job? What keeps you going each day? What we really enjoy is working with people and helping them to improve the quality of their lives, and bringing a little beauty into a sometimes harsh world.

Trove of Treasures

This December, Susan Swartz, The Silver Fund and YVEL team up for a joint event at the Carlyle

W

ith the holiday season approaching, New Yorkers are on the prowl for unique, exquisite and memorable pieces to gift others—or in some cases, themselves. This December, painter Susan Swartz, jeweler YVEL and estate silver specialist The Silver Fund will all be under one roof where holiday shoppers will have a chance to feast their eyes on the remarkable

collections. Exhibiting together for the first time, the trio has known each other for years. Admirers and clients can stop by the Carlyle from December 8th to 11th and while the suite will be open to the public from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. each day, clients can also make private appointments outside those hours.

Michael James, owner of The Silver Fund and of Michael James Fine Art, has been friends with Susan Swartz for over a decade, representing her abstract expressionist work at art fairs, most recently in Newport and Palm Beach. “Susan’s paintings express a tremendously affirmative testimony to nature’s beauty,” says James. An environmental activist, Swartz uses her art to draw attention to the fragility of the environment, noting that the narrative behind her pieces is “an urgent plea to notice, respect and preserve our natural environment.” This past summer, Washington’s National Museum of Women in the Arts hosted an exhibition titled Susan Swartz—Seasons of the Soul as part of its focus on the environment, health and creativity. Swartz has worked with other environmentalists like Robert F. Kennedy Jr., President of the Waterkeeper Alliance, and Dr. Jane Goodall, who wrote that Swartz’s work inspires others to “experience and savor these images of nature, and also to do what we can to save nature itself.” Along with her husband Jim, Swartz has also lent support to several Academy Award-winning documentaries including The Cove, Born Into Brothels and Under Our Skin—a film on Lyme disease and health care which Swartz has personal ties to, having herself suffered from the disease. In addition to directing his fine art business, James owns The Silver Fund, which will be exhibiting a treasure trove of iconic 20th century silver and jewelry by Georg Jensen and Jean E. Puiforcat, as well as important mid-century gold jewelry and decorative accessories. “This year we’ve added a most interesting collection of retro gold jewelry,” James adds, “we are very

Orna and Isaac Levy, the owners and founders of YVEL, have been cultivating beauty for 25 years. Founded in 1986, YVEL specializes in handmade pearl and gemstone jewelry set in 18karat gold. "My family has been in the pearl business for more than one hundred years," says Orna, "YVEL is a natural progression of the pearl passion that is in my blood line." Three-time winners of the Town & Country Couture Design Award, YVEL celebrated its 25th anniversary this year with the founding of the new Andrea Bronfman School of Jewelry & Art—a philanthropic school for the study of jewelry craftsmanship, benefitting the Ethiopian Jewish immigrants in Israel. Every sale of a piece of YVEL jewelry helps to support this meaningful cause. ✦

The real estate expert shares his wisdom on . . . the Manhattan market

M

anhattan apartment coop and condo prices averaged $1,437,302 in the third quarter, a slight improvement from both the previous quarter and a year ago. Gains were helped by an increase in high-end transactions, as the number of sales for over $5 million rose 16 percent from 2010's third quarter. The median price, which measures the middle of the market, fell 4 percent from a year ago to $850,000. Over the past year, the average co-op price rose 2 percent to $1,180,442— helped by an up tick in high-end sales of larger apartments. The average condo price also rose 2 percent to $1,756,744 with studios posting the biggest increase. Along with the rest of the nation, New York City's economic growth has slowed over the past few months. The local unemployment remains below the nation's, although it has shown little movement so far this year. The number of apartments for sale remains moderate, as there is roughly a 7-month supply of apartments in Manhattan at this time. Mortgage rates continue to remain near record-low levels.F

All in the Family Benjamin and Lloyd Macklowe of Macklowe Gallery celebrate 40 years of collecting Art Nouveau, antiques and estate jewelry

M

acklowe Gallery, the uptown destination, is celebrating its 40th anniversary on Madison Avenue. As the longestrunning family-owned business on Madison, Macklowe has spent decades promoting French Art Nouveau furniture and objects, with a special emphasis on Tiffany lamps. Gallery owner Lloyd Macklowe says, “When we saw our first piece of Tiffany art glass, we fell in love. Fortunately for us, Tiffany has loved us back. The market has simply exploded over the last 40 years.” Since opening in 1971, the Macklowe’s have become global leaders in Louis Comfort Tiffany lamps and glassware. For the Metropolitan Museum’s landmark Tiffany show in 2006, the Met acquired only one piece, and it was from Macklowe Gallery. Other museum clients include the MoMA, the Los Angeles Above: 1960s Buccellati pearl and diamond earrings

County Museum, and the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. Macklowe Gallery is a world-renowned advocate for French Art Nouveau. Widely underappreciated in the 1960s, Art Nouveau pieces are now sought after, due in no small part to the work of the Macklowe’s themselves. While they were sourcing the best pieces, they also were creating a market by educating collectors. “Since then,” Lloyd Macklowe comments, “it seems that every ten years we turn around and the prices have doubled.” This winter, Macklowe Gallery will present Dynamic Beauty: The Sculpture of Art Nouveau Paris, an exhibition celebrating its astonishing collection of Art Nouveau bronzes. The result of three years of hunting down the best pieces in the field, this will be the largest collection of Art Nouveau sculpture assembled since the Paris Exposition of 1900. In the world of antique and estate jewelry, Macklowe Gallery is no less discerning.

Benjamin Macklowe says, “What I love about our jewelry collection is that it’s not constrained by period. Our jewelry is comprised of pieces from the Georgian, Victorian, Art Nouveau, Edwardian, Art Deco, Retro and Modern periods. I can show a client how chic she can be in a Georgian period ring, circa 1820, together with a Van Cleef & Arpels brooch from 1960. The juxtaposition of these periods is what makes our jewelry collection special.” What do the next 40 years hold for Macklowe Gallery? According to Benjamin, the current Vice President, “We’ve been lucky enough to have shared the finest examples of these periods with our wonderful clients. We consider ourselves a market leader as well as a source of education. The real joy of our work is exposing clients to the wonder of Tiffany, Art Nouveau and collectible jewelry.” F

Where Prevention Meets Pretty

Dr. Michele Green

Dermatologist Michele Green offers New Yorkers more than just a pretty face

I

n a decade where 50 is the new 40, and 40 is anyone’s guess, it’s clear why non-surgical facial rejuvenation—procedures claiming to lighten, brighten and tighten skin—is enjoying a major boom. At the forefront of the injectables trend for almost 20 years, Dr. Michele Green was among the first dermatologists in Manhattan to use Botox®, Restylane® and Juvederm® with an artistic eye and a conservative approach for the most natural outcome. At her thriving dermatology practice on the Upper East Side, she offers the latest advancements for sun damage, wrinkles, rosacea, acne and hair removal, from IPL to skin-tightening lasers to Fraxel®, which she herself performs on her patients with remarkable results—expertly designing every protocol on an individual basis. “My patients come to me looking for answers, and I have an arsenal of cutting edge solutions available to them, which I’ve tested and formulated firsthand,” explains Dr. Green, whose well-appointed office attracts some of the most discerning women in the city. Dr. Green is one of those rare practitioners—equal parts diagnostician, artist and straight-talking best friend—forming an instant connection with patients, while dispensing an exceptional level of analysis and care. Steadfast in her commitment to skin health and safety, she insists every appointment begins with a complete exam for skin cancer, before she will even entertain a discussion about cosmetics. “I wouldn’t dare use anything on my patients that I wouldn’t use myself,” she says emphatically, her own alabaster, lineless complexion a testament to her practice-what-she-preaches approach. Only the Dr. Green’s Skin Labs AM and PM serums.

most well-researched, proven products and methods are customized according to patient needs, facial contours and skin types. She reviews options individually with every patient, based on the quality of their skin and lifestyle. Together, they determine the right course of action towards achieving patient goals, adding “It’s amazing what we can do today non-surgically with the right combination of treatments.” In addition to her thriving dermatology practice, Dr. Green has been a consultant to skincare giants L’Oréal, Johnson & Johnson, Bioré and Roc, where she was recruited for product formulation and safety testing, Dr. Green developed her own comprehensive, dermatologic-grade line of products geared to protection and prevention. MGSKINLABS® utilizes clinically-proven ingredients and progressive technologies to help mitigate signs of premature skin aging—lines, wrinkles, loss of elasticity, hyper-pigmentation and rosacea. Her best sellers include an AM/PM Serum offering round-theclock age defense and SkinBrightRx For Eyes, an all-in-one eye soufflé that addresses fine lines, dark circles and puffiness. “I chose dermatology because it’s a happy profession,” Dr. Green admits, “People enjoy coming here because they know they’re going to leave feeling better about themselves—prettier, hopeful, more confident.” F

Hell to Heaven

The Story of Bermano South African artist Joel Bermano shares his message

KATIE DAVIS

KATIE DAVIS

I

do not believe in Hell, but I lived in a world that humanity perceives as hell for 30 years. I have thought about things that no person should ever think of, not even for a second. If you do, you either find your soul and become peaceful, joyful, loving and generous or you commit suicide—there is no middle ground. I have analyzed the workings of the human body—sight, sound, taste, touch, hearing, love, hate and anger—and after a very long and tiring journey I found that I am a soul in a body and when I die my soul will go to the next dimension. Before that time comes, I will give as much as I can to humanity. I have thankfully found heaven. I see things like a child; I look at a bee or an ant and can't believe the miracle. I smile as though I had never seen them before. To me, a dog is the greatest fantasy that I could ever paint. Dog lovers know this; dogs are G-d's angels sent to help humans smile. By finding heaven I had no choice but to devote myself to helping people in need and I do this by donating 50 percent of my gross earnings to charity through The Bermano Fund. The disparity between the rich and the poor is incomprehensible to me. The Bible, the Torah and the Koran all demand that 10 percent of your money go to charity, and yet how many people do this? If you cannot give money, then give 10 percent of your time. Disrespecting this decree is like committing a crime against humanity. It is our duty, we who are blessed with so much, to feed the starving children on this Earth. The Earth is rotting and the only way it can be healed is through sweetness, kindness and generosity. The disparity has simply become too wide—our gross over-consumption has tipped the scales too far and we need to restore a balance or indeed, Armageddon will come. The saying “There but for the grace of G-d go I” has recently become clear to me and I am now strong enough to speak for all the people who have no voice. 25,000 people die of starvation every day and yet everyone seems indifferent. These humans are destined for death; people need to see it with their own eyes to realize how inhumane their indifference is. I want to challenge society; the Western world simply does not know true poverty. They walk around blindfolded, but I am here to wake people up from the haze that they live in so that they may realize that they have no choice but to help. I want to challenge the very core of your being and prompt you to give back a small percentage of money or time. If you do, you will put the value of the world ahead of your own value and you will see yourself become a peaceful, happy person leading a meaningful life—you will feel truly fulfilled.

People like to buy paintings from tormented souls after they are dead, but I will be appreciated while I am alive. There is no competition for pain, I know that people suffer terrible pain, but I myself have made it though 30 years of darkness and torment and today, I am free. My works are painted with every ounce of love, passion, joy and kindness from a man who made it through a long, dark journey. All the joy in me exploded out like a volcano and my peace has finally come. I hope to be the number one selling living artist in the world, not because it has ever been a dream, a goal or even my ambition of mine, but simply because it is my destiny. I have had divine miracle after miracle happen to me over the last 12 months and I have achieved what no artist has ever achieved in 6 months. With this unprecedented pledge to donate half of my proceeds to charity, I want to set a new example.—Joel Bermano, as told to AVENUE ✦

PETER MARINO AVENUE’s back-page column asks New York notables our version of the questionnaire made famous by Marcel Proust

I

nternationally renowned architect Peter Marino launched his illustrious career back in the ‘70s when he renovated Andy Warhol’s Upper East Side townhouse. Perpetually clad in his signature, headto-toe leather biker look, Marino is a pro when it comes to designing everything from high-fashion boutiques for Louis Vuitton, Graff, Zegna and Dior, to lush residential spaces. An innovator in his field—he even discovered a new type of glass for the Chanel tower in Ginza, Tokyo—Marino’s unique designs rely on a dialogue between the interior and exterior of buildings, combining art and architecture. An art lover and avid collector, he famously champions young and contemporary artists whose work he commissions throughout his projects. Marino’s own enviable collection includes everything from modern paintings and photography to Renaissance sculpture and antique books. Architect extraordinaire Peter Marino
