7 Ways to Tell Ahead of Time

If You’re Selecting the Right Landscaper. 1.

Will they complete the job within budget? Marders gives you a firm cost, not a +/- 10% or so guesstimate.

2. Will they complete the job on time? Our crews are on our payroll and are trained by us. They remain on your site until the job is finished.

3. Do they provide a written guarantee? Marders gives you a 2-year written guarantee which we’ve stood behind for some 30 years.

4. Will they get all the necessary permits, apply for variances, appear before Town or Village Zoning Boards, etc.? Do they know the local regulations? Often violations are discovered after the job is started costing time and money to remedy.

5.

Will you have to settle for a cookie-cutter design? Most landscapers have a limited variety of trees to sell you. The result is cookie-cutter landscaping. About half of our multi-million dollar inventory is big and/or unusual trees and our Buyer works with our national network of Growers.

6. Do they have a design staff? While we have our own designers, our account managers work well with other Landscape Architects and Landscape Designers.

7.

Do they use and understand organic landscape solutions? Marders has pioneered and perfected the use of organics in our landscape and property care. Photograph by Douglas Young

Commitment to Community Elaine Sargent’s personal and financial investment in medical research and development sets the bar for the next generation of activists she hopes to inspire

E

laine Sargent first became involved in the medical community many years ago when she helped fund her uncle’s research on artery transplants. Dr. Arthur Vineberg’s studies would eventually revolutionize heart transplant procedures around the world,

and Sargent would go on to contribute to the training and work of many future doctors. As her friend Dr. Jeffrey Borer, chair of medicine at SUNY Downstate says, “Elaine Sargent has been a generous supporter of medical research for many years, carrying on the tradition of medical discovery initiated by her uncle, the late Arthur

Vineberg, a pioneering cardiac surgeon.” Sargent and her husband, Daniel—who helped build the corporate end of Solomon Brothers—funded Dr. Borer ’s cardiology research when he was at New York Hospital, as well as Dr. Patrick Walsh’s prostate cancer research at Johns Hopkins University. Elaine Sargent also founded the Arthur M. Vineberg Scholarship at McGill University in Canada, awarded annually to a deserving medical student. “It’s important to help train young doctors who will become tomorrow’s leaders in research,” Sargent says. Using both her own resources as well as her husband’s, Sargent—who was one of the first female brokers on Wall Street—has helped mobilize countless people in the name of medical research. Once she was diagnosed with cancer, Sargent’s commitment to healthcare only grew. “Cervical cancer becomes a real threat once it spreads to the ovaries,” Sargent explains, “so it was important to me to help improve research on this deadly disease.” Inspired by her personal experience, she and her husband helped establish the Avon Chair dedicated to ovarian cancer research at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. Then, when Sargent began suffering from sinus problems, she met with Dr. David W. Kennedy, who, as she notes, “was the

first doctor to discover that sinus problems could result in a bone infection.” Dr. Kennedy says, “At the University of Pennsylvania, Elaine and Dan Sargent were the prime movers behind developing and raising the money for a chair for the Department of Otorhinolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery in my honor, not to mention the Sargent Temporal Bone Laboratory. They also provided financial support over many years for fellows from the United States and overseas who wanted to further their knowledge in the field of sinus disease.” Dr. Kennedy adds, “The philanthropic support provided by the Sargents to academic medical centers is critical to the continued advancement of medical care.” Dr. Leon Root, attending orthopedic surgeon at the Hospital for Special Surgery, feels similarly. “I am grateful to Elaine for the two decades of support she has given my research into helping children with cerebral palsy,” he says. Sargent hopes that her long list of medical research contributions will inspire others to get involved. “During the current health care crisis, it is more important then ever to support individual doctors and their research,” she explains. Sargent has now extended the same dedication she has to medical research to her new love: the theater. Elaine and her great friend, the late Kitty Carlisle Hart, used to see shows two or three times a

“I am grateful to Elaine for the two decades of support she has given my research.” —Dr. Leon Root week. Now she can often be found on the aisle with noted critic Rex Reed. “Daniel and I would go to New York Theatre Workshop and see the rehearsals,” she recalls. “They do such an exceptional job so we wanted to support their work and off-Broadway shows.” Over the years, Sargent has supported the Our Time Theatre Company, the Roundabout Theatre Company, the Manhattan Theatre Club, Playwrights Horizons, Primary Stages, the Lincoln Center Theater, New York Theatre Workshop and 59E59 Theater, to name a few. Of course, she also enjoys many Broadway productions. “When I like a play or see a lot of potential in a script, I like to go back three or four times,” Sargent says. “It is crucial to support new talent and it is very exciting to watch it develop.” Recently, Sargent has devoted time and money to workshops for new writers, directors and plays. She is especially passionate about what theater can do for young talent and children who stutter.

In addition to supporting medical research and the theater, Sargent stays busy managing her own finances and working for the social and political causes she holds dear. “I feel very strongly about the right to have an abortion, and for same-sex couples to marry and adopt,” she says. But above all, Sargent prides herself on being open-minded. “I support whoever I think can be trusted, no matter their political affiliation.” Unsurprisingly, Sargent has passed on her commitment to the community to her family’s younger generation. “I am very proud of my grandchildren. They are grateful to live in a country like the United States; they don’t take it for granted,” she says. “They are extremely active in supporting the candidates who reflect their goals for the country and the world.” And beyond her family, Sargent prizes community activism in general. “I admire anyone who steps up to support their ideals, no matter what they are. The point is to be involved, committed and active.” ✦ MARCH 2010 · AVENUE MAGAZINE | 77
