CORFU ISLAND

Another charming Greek locale is Corfu Town. Heavily influenced by the Venetians, the French and the English, the village is an excellent starting point for exploring the island. Get lost in the small cobblestone lanes known as “kandounia,” visit the Museum of Asian Art, wander down the famed Liston promenade or saunter around the massive Spianada square. The entire town is loaded with vintage charm. The Old Town is highly reminiscent of Venice, Italy, with all the history of Greece. Beach lovers will want to spend time at Halikounas Beach, a lovely sandy beach that is one of the most beautiful coastal areas in Corfu. The beach is also a great place for scuba diving.

The stunning natural landscape, crystal-clear seas and excellent weather year round explain why Corfu is one of the most cosmopolitan Mediterranean destinations. It casts a powerful spell on its visitors.

Did you know that Corfu is famous for its olive trees? They are abundant on the island, numbering about 4.5 million, and many groves date back to ancient times. Also widely grown in Corfu are citrus fruits such as Merlin sweet oranges, lemons, tangerines and bergamot oranges that give off a marvelous scent. Another distinctive local flavor is “tsitsibira,” a kind of ginger beer which is exclusively produced in Corfu.
