Spring Issue #AthTribe

SMIRNOFF SOUND COLLECTIVE x TRIBES: DISCWOMAN On the eve of International Women’s Day, SMIRNOFF Sound Collective premiered a new documentary (produced by the spirit brand) showcasing female DJ talent from around the world. On this night, they hosted a series of parties from around the world with Tribes: DISCOWOMAN which spotlights the contributions of women within Electronic Music Culture. NYC, LA, Sydney and London hosted these events at their Mixmag Sound Labs that premiered the documentary, had live female DJ sets and of course SMIRNOFF vodka cocktails. In NYC, guests that attended the party were not only able to view the 12 minute film, but also enjoyed a live Q&A with DISCWOMAN whose co-founders Christine Tran, Frankie Hutchison and Emma Burgess-Olson, as they shared the role of women in EDM as well as the inclusive nature of the medium. DJs Umfang, DJ Haram, Volvox and Tygapaw joined the discussion. The discussion focused on highlighting points made throughout the documentary about the role of women in electronic music culture, and the inclusive nature of electronic music. In addition to the women on the Q&A panel who are in the film, world-renowned female DJs including Black Madonna, Nicole Moudaber, Star Eyes, Sandunes, Demian Licht and Nina Sonik were celebrated within the program.

“The Smirnoff Sound Collective has made a commitment to becoming the biggest contributor to the inclusive nature of electronic music culture,” said Justin Medcraft, SMIRNOFF Global Senior Brand Manager. “We are fulfilling that commitment by using our global platform to celebrate diversity in a way that inspires positive conversation within music and how the culture truly becomes better when everyone is included.” While much of the conversation over the past few years surrounding female DJ talent has focused on issues of equal pay and opportunities for female DJs, the Smirnoff Sound Collective has decided to use International Women’s Day as a worldwide celebration of female DJs. The story told in “Tribes: DISCWOMAN” flips the script with a new narrative that sheds light on the incredible energy and eclectic sense of style that female DJs contribute to the scene. “The Smirnoff Sound Collective’s goal of telling an inclusive and diverse story about female DJs is something we decided to join forces with because the work we do is more than just about us,” said Frankie Hutchinson, DISCWOMAN co-founder. “It’s about an awesome community of women who have great talent and deserve their stories be shared and celebrated.”

You can watch Tribes: DISCOWOMAN on Smirnoff Sound Collective’s YouTube page and you can continue the conversation as well as get updates through their social media channels. For those that will be in Miami, they will provide a stage to DISCOWOMAN on March 19th for an all female lineup with performances by Laura Jones, Honey Dijon, and Tokimonsta. This is just one day within the four day event from March 16 - 19th and is free to consumers 21 years of age and older. Smirnoff Sound Collective reminds music fans that whether you’re mixing music or cocktails, do so responsibly.

lifestyle. Whether I’m visiting designers, on set for shoots for this publication or others or going on air – I always end up being in conversations about health, mindfulness and balance. It’s always interesting to see what’s out there and to try it out. At the beginning of this year, I decided that I would focus on certain areas in terms of my fitness. I was about 2 weeks in when I was connected with Exude Fitness and its CEO, Edward Jackowski, Ph.D., one of the country’s leading motivational fitness experts and best-selling author of Escape Your Shape (Simon and Schuster). A number of celebrities have graduated from Exude Fitness including Brooke Shields, Tina Fey and more.

I always felt that when people chose their workouts it was based on their needs as well as a way to tap into their energy. My vivid memories of exercise include watching my mom work out to Denise Austin, Glad and a number of the 80’s stars. Aerobics, the step and squats were a part of my routine from high school through college as I loved the movement and that feeling – who doesn’t love a retro Jane Fonda moment? Towards the end of college, I met the Elliptical and I was hooked. As I transitioned to NYC as long as there was an elliptical – that’s the only gym equipment you would see me on for 45 mins to an hour. At home, I would do routines that focused on squats (loved them) and crunchies. For the last few years when it came to various workouts, I sampled the trends and methods like I would a flight of wines and beer. It didn’t bother me that I wasn’t committed to them – as long as I kept moving. As a woman who has always been comfortable within my own skin, like many I have always had areas that I would love to tweak; however, I felt that there were things that were clearly off the table due to genetics. As the Co-Founder/Style Director of Athleisure Mag, I love how we showcase fashion, style, fitness, beauty and more within the athleisure

Prior to my first session, I was sent his book, Escape Your Shape, which breaks down our bodies into four shapes Hourglass®, Spoon®, Ruler® or Cone®. With that said, these types have workouts that are geared towards each shape (as well as itemized no-no’s for each body type). Not surprisingly, I knew that I was an Hourglass. I also learned through the book that my sampling of various workouts wasn’t about being aware of what was out there, but my way of saying that the methods weren’t helping me in my goals. Therefore, I would try it out for a bit and then move on. Frustration would set in and I would simply go back to the elliptical and squats - as I felt that that was benefitting me (although now I know this doesn’t work for me in terms of the goal of a leaner lower body).

Escaping My Shape by Kimmie Smith

When I arrived at Exude Fitness at Bliss Spa, I had already filled out a form that looked at my medical history, my goals etc., and I kept in mind the Hourglass focus. I had circled one of my goals that simply stated toning in all areas. I thought it was a reasonable answer and who wouldn’t want to just have it all. The next 20 minutes of working with Edward showed me that without even reading my answers he accurately identified areas that I wanted to improve upon. He also dispelled myths that I believed to be true (ie., having larger thighs is hereditary so it’s not something that I can really do anything about). As we sat there, he charted what we were working towards from reducing inches to losing weight as well as to benchmarks. Hearing that in 6 weeks I would see one series of results and that by July (right before the holiday) – I would hit the goals, I was shocked. Just in case I had any more concerns on whether this was possible, Edward had me do one thing that made me a believer. I hadn’t been able to touch my toes standing up in a very long time. I chalked it up to having poor flexibility as I got older. Within a few stretches on the same day upon meeting Edward, I was able to touch my toes (sometimes when I am working on a workout and am challenged, I stop and touch my toes to remember that something I didn’t think I could do – I can do without effort). Although I was a little sore my first day as I had touched muscles that I hadn’t before, I was excited to get a workout program that was tailored to me for my body type. That night, I had a program that included minimal equipment (you can’t go wrong with 2 lb weights, a jump rope and a 4 lb bar). Within my routines, I have options for days that I do yoga or when I’m traveling and am unable to be on a stationary bike. Everything is thought out so that you can optimize your workout to reach your goals. In addition, he is only a phone call or an email away. Another key portion of Exude Fitness is the care that is taken to matching each person to a trainer. It’s not just about ensuring that you’re form is right or that you are increasing your workout – it’s also about matching a personality that creates a relationship. Through the past 6+ weeks, working out with Fun Lee has been a treat as she knows how I have advanced within certain workouts that were pre-

viously a challenge, she knows when I can do a little more and keeps mixing it up – but she also makes me feel really comfortable in general. She also acknowledges my commitment to the process and that I am genuinely blown away by the results. When it comes to results, I have to say that I saw toned areas throughout my legs pretty quickly and well before my 6 week target, I was pleased with the transformation that happened and of course with working out within what works for my body, it’s easier for me to push forward even through portions that are still a little tough. As Edward says, the “results and motivation are directly linked to each other - and the more results you see, the more incentive you have for continuing to exercise.” At the end of the day health, fitness and aesthetics are the core benefits to exercising and when these are met through picking, “the right exercises and activities that are based on your body type” – going back to sampling an array of workouts is not even an option. For the past 25 years, Exude Fitness has studied and analyzed the aesthetic effects of exercise and holds the world’s only medically-proven and patented exercise program based on body types - as he is the pioneer and innovator of this method. I’m pleased to share that I will check in with you on my results and findings with my training with Exude Fitness and even outside of the magazine, you will be able to see more about what they are doing throughout the website. As Spring makes everyone think about their fitness levels again (just in case some of you made those resolutions at the beginning of the year), I want to share with you Exude Fitness and its body types, as well as some key notes about each. KNOW YOUR BODY TO GET TONED No matter whether you’re an Hourglass®, Spoon®, Ruler® or Cone® (although these body types are genetically predetermined) it’s understanding your type that will allow you to work out your problem areas and to adjust your workout plan. In terms of diet, I can only speak to my plan, I really have not been restricted from any food; however, it is about when I am eating it. I have always been one that doesn’t eat breakfast, has a light lunch (depending on

what’s going on it’s a salad) and then a larger meal for dinner. A nugget of truth came when Edward said that my larger meal should be lunch as that is when I need more energy and my lighter meal should be a salad. When you think about it, it makes sense and as we’re moving into the summer, having this simple, yet effective advice will definitely be welcome. As someone who loves potatoes, learning that I don’t have to break up with it but can simply enjoy them during lunch with one cheat evening with them are just some of the examples of why this method works with your lifestyle. To properly identify your shape, it’s simply a matter of seeing where your weight (which includes muscle and fat) is distributed on your frame. Once you know your shape, you’re able to make the proper adjustments. Most women are Hourglass and Rulers, while most men are Cones and Rulers; moreover, your height or weight doesn’t determine which body type you are. It’s also worth noting that if you are vastly overweight, you may have a hard time seeing what your true body type may be. It’s best to follow the Hourglass workout until you begin to reduce your weight to see where you are. At that point, you can assess your type and begin targeting the exact workout for your true body type.

HOURGLASS * Carries weight in both the upper and lower body; however, slender at the waist * Significant difference between the circumference of your chest and waist (or between hips and waist) * Your body reflects a balanced and curvaceous appearance when looked at in the mirror It’s worth noting that those that are this type tend to look lighter than their actual weight and tend to gain most of their mass in the thighs and backs of arms. BEST EXERCISES * Jump Rope (this has become my new friend) * Stationary biking with light to moderate resistance (when I am not accessible to a bike, I walk in non-inclined areas) * Upper body exercises with light weights and high repetitions EXERCISES TO AVOID * Step classes (I gave a sigh on this one) * Spinning * Kick-boxing (another sigh) * Elliptical (this took a moment for me to mark this passing) THE DETAILS As an Hourglass, my purpose is high reps (at least 25 – 50 repetitions for each exercise), low resistance and low weights for both upper and lower bodies. As my body slims down and lose weight and mass, I can then increase resistance and weight. Regardless, I have to continue high reps for each exercise. THE GOAL: Trim upper and lower body.

erate resistance/weights until your reach your ideal weight! THE GOAL: Focus on trimming your stomach/ mid-section which will make you a little curvy.

RULER * You’re straight up and down with very few curves due to equal body proportions * Little difference in the circumference of your chest, waist and hips * You gain weight around your midsection It’s worth noting that those with this body type do not bulk easily, have less hamstring flexibility then Hourglasses and Spoons and have a tendency to lower back pain.

SPOON * Your lower body is considerably larger than the upper body

BEST EXERCISES

* You carry most of your weight in your hips, thighs and buttocks

* Yoga, stretch/calisthenics classes, Pilates on machines

* You gain weight from the hips down

* Full sit-ups without locking feet, upper and lower abdominal crunches and leg outs * Jogging with incline, step classes, spinning, lunges and squats THE DETAILS Those who are within this shape don’t have to avoid any exercises! If you are overweight and are looking to lose, then you need to use a mod2016.March

- 21 -

* When you look in the mirror, your eyes go directly to your lower body Spoons tend to have a weaker upper body and thicker thighs, knees, calves and ankles. BEST EXERCISES * Jumping rope with a speed rope * Push-ups www.athleisuremag.com

* Standing knee to opposite chest EXERCISES TO AVOID

* The upper body is considerably larger than the lower body

* Squats, lunges and ankle weights

Cones tend to have weak abdominal muscles and they experience some back pain.

* All stair climbers/steppers, Elliptical and cross trainers

BEST EXERCISES

* Spinning

* All lower body exercises that have moderate to heavy weights and/or resistance

THE DETAILS

* Walking or jogging on incline

For a Spoon, it’s all about high reps and low resistance for all lower-body exercises and moderate to high resistance for all upper body exercises. For those that are overweight, the resistance should not be too high for the upper body either.

* Upper body exercises with lightweight and high reps

THE GOAL: A trimmer and more streamlined lower body and to have a stronger upper body so that you have a proportionate look.

EXERCISES TO AVOID * All upper body exercises with moderate to high weights/resistance * Kick-boxing moves for the upper body * All exercise classes with hand weights or weighted bars heavier than 2 lbs. THE DETAILS Although Cones tend to avoid abdominal and lower body exercises, they are essential to do to become proportioned. The focus here is high reps and low resistance or weighs for the upper body with high resistance and moderate to heavy weights for the lower body. In addition, Cones that are male tend to struggle with giving up heavy weight lifting for their upper bodies. They need to switch to push-ups, dips, chin-ups or upper body routines that use lower weight and higher repetitions. THE GOAL: Getting a trimmer, less bulky upper body and strengthen the lower body to achieve better symmetry.

CONE * You carry most of your weight in your back, chest, arms and stomach * You’re more slender from the hips down

Over the next few months, I will check in with you on my progress as well as share additional items that are going on with Exude Fitness.

While being teased with warm weather last week here in NYC, we know that the real thing is not that far away! That means spending more time heading to our favorite nail salons to get gel manicures. We took a moment to chat with our friends at Paintbox in Soho to find out about gel treatments as well as the safe way to remove it when you don’t have time to make your way to this chic manicure salon. Gel manicures are a great way to not only have a long lasting manicure (the Athleisure Mag team can rock ours for 2 weeks with no chips), but also to maintain length if desired. With proper removal, gel manicures are not damaging or harmful. You can safely remove your gel manicure by: 1. Buffing the top coat off of each nail with a buffer file. 2. Soak a small piece of cotton with each pure acetone or gel remover and wrap it 2016.March

Coming and Going: Tory Burch

Tory Burch has a way of finding the elegance within a lifestyle. Whether you enjoy her namesake line that has iconic styles with her much loved 70’s orange hues that find their way in her collection. When speaking to those that define themselves as “Tory Girls” it’s not only an embrace of the brand at retail but the woman herself who embodies the qualities of a designer as well as providing empowerment to females around the globe in achieving their dreams to own their own businesses. She has left her fingerprint on pieces that can be worn to brunch, the office and beyond across a staggering array of categories. But the idea of creating Tory Sport, a sport line was always something she wanted to create 2016.March

Athleisure Mag caight up with Tory to step into her world and understand why she has included this within her universe. “I found that I kept wearing my sports clothes from high school and college and I was intrigued by the concept of the elegance of sport”, Tory says. In addition, Tory is known as someone who is active whether she’s working out 4 times a week or focusing on a particular sport such as paddleboard yoga. Tory Sport is not available within Tory Burch boutiques and can be found at their Elizabeth Street Pop Up, online and at their Tory Sport store on Fifth Avenue in Flatiron, which will open this spring. We fell in love with Tory Sport's collection

due to its perfect blend of function and form coming together for ultimate style. COOLMAX (a sport friendly material) can play with cashmere, SPF, Schoeller Fabric to repel water, oil and dirt as well as including neoprene being used within gym bags and more. The pieces incorporate our Athleisure lifestyle by being able to wear the leggings from gym to lunch and having fitted jackets and blazers that can be mixed with tees and curve hugging pants that allow you to jetset in comfort, hitting the ground running when you land. When Tory reflects on how this line can be classified, she is quick to note that its focus is on "looking good and being comfortable". It’s about the transition of leaving a lunch to go to the airport, going to work to join a class at your studio and more. In this manner, she defines Tory Sport as a part of “coming and going” and ensuring that your closet allows this process to happen in an easy way. In addition, it’s focused on performance for running, yoga, tennis and golf. Because the focus is on the ability to navigate your day and to mix and match pieces that are great for work but can merge into the studio. In addition, the line has elements of the 70s in it and has a color palette that is different then many performance/fitness lines which tend to lean towards pastels or fluorescent hues. With an array of brands working within the space, Tory feels that she stands out as she doesn’t focus on many of the trends utilized by other brands such as exposing body parts – she embraces the country club preppy focus with pieces that cover studio fitness as well as classic sports such as golf and tennis. In addition, personalization is a vital component so those looking to have their track jackets/pants monogrammed can enjoy this detail to make it their own.

TITAN FITNESS Titan Fitness Studios was founded in Januray 2011, on the second floor of its current location when it started out as a personal training studio. The philosophy has always been based on an old school approach without gimmicks or a lot of commercial equipment. Their focus is the client’s progress from working with their own body weight (modifying when needed, e.g. assisted pull-ups) to advanced versions of the same exercise (e.g. weighted pull-ups). With the inclusion of small groups, this original process is now applied to the launch of Titan Total Body program. Unlike gyms with overcrowded classes where members lack a personalized progressive experienece, group training - Titan Total Body, is more akin to personal training with experienced coaches. The workouts are intense, but not intimidating, and multiple variations of the same exercise are offered based on your level of fitness. Over time, the coaches will progress you along the spectrum from beginner to advanced. It's not just about working up a sweat, coaches teach you correct form and you'll notice a marked improvement 2016.March

in your fitness over sessions. In addition to working out, Titan looks at the total body and its needs. They have a partnership with Kettlebell (KB) Kitchen - a paleo meal delivery service. KB Kitchen offers customizable meal - 54 -

As we get closer to summer, Titan Fitness Studios will add to the initial offering of 10 classes per week so that all clients can find a time/coach that suits their schedule. There are four coaches. SPEIR FITNESS Speir Pilates is a small group class Pilates fusion studio located in downtown Santa Monica. The classes are taught by highly certified instructors with a 600 hour classical Pilates certification as well as a specialty in a modern exercise technique. This means that the instructors are also top tier circuit trainers and fantastic ballet barre instructors. All the teachers are handpicked and trained for months in the Speir Pilates method. Classes include: - An athletic power reformer class that focuses on lengthening and chiseling every part of the body without leaving the reformer. - A reformer/cardio fusion class that circuits in modern cardio-aerobic interval training to get fast results. - A reformer/ballet barre fusion class - if you like sweat-tastic dance parties and changing your body - this is your class! This class fuses in circuits of ballet barre work that elongates, tones and chisels the legs, arms, abs and booty while working through elongating exercises on the reformer. The studio is the brainchild of Pilates instructor Andrea Speir. She began creating her method over the past ten years as a fitness professional. By including exercises from her background as a dancer and trainer, she began creating a style of Pilates that was truly an all-in-one workout. Andrea didn’t want her clients to feel the need to 2016.March

go to the gym and sit on a bike to get cardio after their workout. She began fusing in elements to save her clients time and money and it began changing her clients bodies beyond belief - hence the method was born. - 56 -

Equally impressive is Andrea’s background as she is the face of Pilates for subscription site, DailyBurn. She is the star of two top selling DVD’s as well as a pilates app. Her app reached the iTunes top 100 chart within two months of release and has remained in www.athleisuremag.com

the top 2 Pilates app for over 2 years. She has graced the cover of Pilates Style Magazine, as well as the pages of Self, Shape, Livestrong, FitBottomed Girls, Active Times, and more. She has taught her Pilates method on TV, such as the Kris Jenner Show, Hallmark, ABC News and more. She is the star of cyber training course Ballet Fit at McFit gyms - which is essentially the Equinox of Europe. In addition, she teaches classes via video to groups of gym goers in 272 gyms across Europe on a daily basis.

With plans for expansion, Speir Fitness is keen to reach as many people as possiblble. Guests at this fitness center can enjoy a complimnentary coffee and tea bar. Within their shop, they can purchase Health-Ade kombucha, Lucky Jack cold brewed coffee and water. By the end of the month, Speir Fitness will be the brick and mortar for online fitness retailer, Carbon 38. The boutique also sells their own label of tees, pullovers, towels, bags and Swell bottles.

The other half of the team is Elizabeth Polk senior counsel at Netflix. Lawyer by day, she had a deep founded passion for health and fitness. Spring means that being outside is a given. Any excuse/reason is welcome. To toast this, we put together three looks for after work drinks, impromptu poolside and post brunch beverages with our friend Rachel Sheen, who is in Marvel’s new movie, Deadpool. We shot our brunch and after work looks at JIMMY Soho which sits atop the James Hotel and we’re sure these looks will find their way into your rotation. ATHLEISURE MAG: What is the aesthetic/vibe of the JIMMY at the James Hotel? JIMMY SOHO: JIMMY is a grown up, stylish, fun and unpretentious cocktail lounge that has indoor/outdoor capacity. We’re not a dance club although often people are bopping their heads to our DJs (THUR/FRI/SAT night and SAT/ SUN afternoons in summer). We’re 18 floors above Soho/Tribeca with nearly 360 views of the city. JIMMY is a fairly intimate space, holding about 100 indoors with room for another 75 outside in good weather. The vibe is for conversation and socializing, whether that’s after work or post-dinner. AM: Since JIMMY lounge is a rooftop, what areas are guests able to enjoy now that spring is on its way? JS: Our roof area is always open for people to step outside but right now people are more focused on staying cozy inside, sitting on couches by the floor-to-ceiling windows, grooving to some great music, and catching up with friends or making new ones.

tucky Derby. And we open our afternoon pool-deck parties on May 21, which is when we start opening at 3pm on weekends with afternoon DJs. We’ll also be showing the Olympics this summer both out by the pool and indoors.

AM: What is the signature drink of JIMMY lounge and what are some of the favorite dishes that are enjoyed by guests? JIMMY: We don’t have one signature cocktail, but we have two cocktails since we have opened that we can’t take off the menu, the Legal in Vermont-which is Bourbon, Maple, Cinnamon and Shisho over a cinnamon bark ice block, and the other one is The Grapes of Wrath-Vodka, muddled Grapes and Cucumbers with Elderflower syrup and seltzer. 2016.March

tel, Cafe Clover, The Skylark and JIMMY, and several other prominent NYC venues.

AM: Who are the creators of JIMMY lounge and what are their backgrounds in terms of the culinary and nightlife/mixology scene?

JIMMY: JIMMY is nightlife for people who are either “over” going to big clubs with EDM where they can’t hear themselves speak, or for groups to gather for a cocktail or two before they head out for a real late-nighter. It’s also the ideal spot to spend a spring/summer weekend afternoon, sipping a cocktail out by the pool. In that way, it’s kind of “day-life”.

JIMMY: JIMMY was developed by David Rabin and Johnny Swet. David was a founder of Lotus and other well-known nightspots, and is now a partner in Cafe Clover, The Lambs Club, The Skylark and JIMMY. Johnny Swet worked at many of the most iconic spots in NY like Bowery Bar and Pastis before opening his own places, Hotel Griffou and Rogue and Canon. He’s also the cocktail consultant for the Dream Ho- 62 -

There are a number of hair trends that are great ways to update your look for Spring/ Summer 2016. With so many techniques out there, we chatted with Boston’s Edward Blum of the Makeover Salon and Spa (he also works with his talented wife, Norah Blum) to talk about his work as well as explaining popular color techniques. ATHLEISURE MAG: How did you become known as ‘Edwards Scissor Hands’? EDWARD BLUM: The Edward Scissorhands nickname I was given was given by one of the field people at Boston magazine for best of Boston in 2013. We won Best of Boston south at that time for Boston’s best hair salon. When I was working on the scout, she was not allowed to really tell us that she was from Boston magazine but made a comment about how my hands seem to work while I was cutting her hair and made reference to the name Edward Scissorhands. She also printed that quote in the article in Boston Magazine in August 2013. My hands move quickly when I cut people’s hair and over the years I have had many different funky, so to speak hairstyles, so when the movie came out starring Johnny Depp, it was a natural being my name is Edward for people to call me Edward Scissorhands! I’ve heard that phrase many times over the years.

impressive resume. All of our input was needed as we represent the entire USA market. We worked and networked with each other so that we could interpret fashion in our individual markets. AM: What is the Makeovers Salon + Spa? EB: Makeovers Salon and Spa was opened on October of 1987. We opened our first location in Easton Massachusetts with five employees the salon was open and has always been owned by Edward and Norah Blum. We opened the salon in the suburbs of Boston in hopes to establish our roots and family in a beautiful suburb and having already worked globally wanted to create an urban environment in the beautiful South suburb of Easton, MA. The company quickly grew as we opened it with a base of 1100 clients and our mission was to be Fashion forward always looking to the next trend and to grow a team of stylists that would collaborate to not only watch the trends but help create them. Over the years we have enlarged the facility many times and have grown into not only the first day spa and salon south of Bos-

AM: How was being a fashion/hair consultant at Milan Fashion Week last fall, beneficial in seeing upcoming trends? EB: My official position in working with fashion week in Milan was to be there pre-fashion week, which was one week before and leading into Milan Fashion Week. We were there learning new techniques and being able to see the trends as they come forward for spring summer and fall. The team of us representing L’Oreal USA were chosen as we were the top stylists and everyone had an 2016.March

ton, but one of the most progressive. We have a family approach with our team members and many of us have worked with each other for over twenty years. We believe that no member is unable to bring their own unique gifts to the team, and we work together almost in a “teaching hospital “ fashion to share our strengths and weaknesses for the greater good of the group. We specialize in every facet of and beauty service and work together to excell as there is always strength in numbers! AM: What is the ‘Color and Style Think Tank’? EB: One of our newest group projects has been labeled “The Think Tank.” This consists of our group getting together on an ongoing basis to create and analyze new techniques and a lot of times we will, with permission, work together in a client to try some ink active and experimental concepts that will lead into a whole new finished design in color, cutting, or just a finished piece of hair art! It is a collaborative of mad scientists pushing the limits to create a revolutionary new concept. We would rather move ahead than follow however, we always respect others and are quick to give praise for our kindred spirits! For us, it is a great team building process and it breaks the barriers between the new comers and the veterans, because all that is required is willingness and talent!

within ‘Cyber Color’, color contouring, color palettes, ‘ecaille’, color melting and Balyage – for those that are not familiar, can you share what this is? EB: Cyber color, Ombré and balata are morphing as great techniques rule in many new forms. People are getting more into free hand and artistic approaches and there’s no going back! lt seems every corner of our artistic Comunity has a new pallet. We were predicting more plums and rich golds and apricots, as well as strawberry shortcake and warm buttery blonds. Another team of fashionistas is showing pastelle points and then we have the newest craze “the oil slick color” using greens, blacks, dark rich Cherri’s and blues! I think the operative word is Rich color is in! But then give it a minute! We are also seeing a great trend in shirt cropped hair styles with length at the top and disconnected pieces coming out of nowhere, e.g. Sassoon Mia Farrow looks. Styles that shave sections out of the hair and give way to a petaling effect like layers of a rose. This is why we live Instagram! Unicorn hair, oil slick color melts cyber color we love it all. It’s like someone threw away the key to the paint box and us crazy kids have run wild with the supplies!

AM: What trends will we see within hair options as we get into Spring/Summer 2016? EB: Spring/Summer will continue to bring innovative trends in pastel colors! The styles will be influenced by many eras. We are seeing a lot of seventies looks with a shaggy texture and all types of bangs! I have seen and worked with a lot of strong bangs this season, blunt if you will. We are seeing color still in the lead and new techniques pop up by the minute thanks to the internet, i.e. color melting on Instagram, Facebook, etc. AM: When you look at Instagram, you always see great hair colors. Clearly you’re a man who enjoys color techniques such as Unicorn hair and other methods. Tell us about trends 2016.March

of tone all in the same family. AM: What celebrities have you worked on? EB: I have been privileged to work on both celebrity’s on screen as well as celebrity’s in their own rights. From Christian Alphonso, Judge Maria Lopes for her show by Sony pictures, Maureen Hancock from Disney’s “Postcards from Heaven" and many Boston anchors for channel 4 and 5. I have also worked with many models, one of my favorites being Carol Alt many years ago for a show when she still did couture in-store events. My favorite work has been working with models for designers like Donna Karan, Michael Kors and Cynthia Rowley. Many of the greatest celebrity clients we have worked on have been local people giving a hand to animal causes and homeless shelter projects like Catherine and Jason Veritec, former captain and wife of the Boston Red Sox! I believe everyone is a celebrity if their hearts and energies are put to the best effort of people and creatures in need! I have won many honors in my career like, Best of Boston, Beat magazines Best Rock Hairdresser, and Northeast Cutting and Styling Champion. My Salon has won Readers Choice Gold over twenty times, Salon of the year, Business of the year and has been featured in Modern Salon, American Salon, Launch Pad, Boston Magazine, and many many more thanks to our staff and the partnership with my partner and wife Norah Blum and as a team Norah and I have won “Business owners of the year.” Over the years my wife and team have supported me through the many country’s challenging projects I have been involved in. Together we all have worked thru many overnights putting together collection shoots for Sebastian, Wella and many fashion shows until early morning hours for charity events.

Cyber color is a technique where shapes and lines are imprinted in the hair using things like foil and plastic wrap. These shapes are separated and spaced in a way to give the hair a graphic look, lines and shapes and colors are separated to draw a story onto the head instead of blending and flowing. Color contouring is a technique using lights and darks to illuminate great features and detract from your features that you want to diminish. It also gives a sense of height and depth. If you have shorter, heavier face we can go lighter on the top to create height and make the face appear leaner and taller. All these techniques have the goal of creating a more oval or symmetrical image, which is the most desirable.

AM: What are your suggestions for those who have never done a major change on their hair, but have decided to do so - how do they manage their expectations and become comfortable with their new look?

Ecaille is a trend with three or more shades to create a beautiful blend of tone on tone color. One of these palettes is a blonde, brown, and warm red. Each color gives background or foreground. The end result is beautiful blends 2016.March

to work into a new style? There are so many different personalities to consider! For many, the easiest way is to take some of the details that have always been a hit with the client. If they like to create a look incorporating a covered forehead than use that feature in the new look. It’s like taking a long trip from home by still having your favorite teddy bear to cuddle for safety! Lol. If the client has always liked their style with a side part then keep it in the new look. There are guides and clues that will assure success if 2016.March

you look over the clients history to gather. Sometimes a shy client doesn’t know why they liked a previous look they just did. We may not see it, but these pieces of a style create the confidence that gives that look a thumbs up to them! For the client that’s willing to jump right into the fire? Look at images to gather and tell them to fasten their seatbelt, it’s going to be an adventurous ride! PARADISE FOUND By Kitty Bradshaw The feeling of total peace brought me back to Villa del Palmar at the Islands of Loreto where I spent some much needed down time. Not quite as popular as Mexico City or Cancun—Loreto Mexico offers a much more toned down, tranquil experience which resonates with travelers like myself that want to retreat from the world. This resort offers a respite that creates a stress free zone tempered at a frequency of Zen. Everyone leaves Villa del Palmar feeling light and free of any burdens or anxiety. Simply put, this resort is my quiet place off the grid. The property of Villa del Palmar is a town within a town; a Spanish style Shangri-La of sorts. The resort spans 4,447 acres which includes a golf course, tennis court, multiple swimming pools of various sizes and visibility, full scale spa, 3 restaurants, private beach, and a reclining chair with your name on it. The elements of both land and sea come together to create a vibrancy rich in color and texture that makes it a worthy choice. Although its amenities are plentiful, I enjoy focusing on the feeling of a vacation in its truest sense and all its benefits. FOODIE PARADISE I pretty much ate everything that was set in front of me and then some. Villa del Palmar at the Islands of Loreto has an all-inclusive food and drink package through the restaurants and room service. Seafood, steaks, and tequila— they had to peel me away from the table by the time it was all said and done. Stand outs for me included the Chocolate Clams, Tortilla Soup, and Mexican style briskets, lobster, shrimp cocktails, and customized cocktails with each meal. Their award winning chefs created everything I could imagine. When I wasn’t intoxicated, dreaming, or working out; I enjoyed plenty of delicious meals and specialty drinks.

Kale Sprouts

OTOGRAPHY Paul Farkas

We always keep an eye out on interesting finds and the other day (thanks to Food Network’s cohost of The Kitchen, Sunny Anderson), we found out about Kalettes which is a hybrid vegetable that merges Kale and Brussel Sprouts together. With a little more research, we realized this relatively new creation is called Kale Sprouts or Brussel Kale. Those who are a fan of these vegetables, are defintiely going to enjoy them blended together. We headed to Athleisure Kitchen and had Chef Rosalie from Williams Sonoma create two must have recipes (you can find more recipes at Kalettes) that have minimal prep and cook time in order to give you a nutritous snack, side or meal. In case you have any questions on whether this should be incorporated into your food lifestyle, remember that Kale and Brussel Sprouts have a number of benefits.

KALE BENEFITS - Low in calories & high in fiber - High in Vitamin A, C, K - High in Iron and Calcium - Filled with powerful antioxidants - Is the perfect detox food

SautÊ for 3-5 minutes or until vegetables start to soften. Add Kalettes and stir to combine. Cover and cook for 5-7 minutes or until the Kalettes are tender crisp. It's all about using great tools that allow your work to be that much easier when it comes to cooking! We found that in making these sides, that the Shun Chopper Knife. The Kalettes with Mushrooms and Peppers was made with a Breville Stainless-Steel Electric Hot Wok. In addition, we suggest calling your local grocer to see if they have Kalettes, Kale Sprouts or Brussel Kale as we found that they are definitely a hot item! We suggest calling Whole Foods and Trader Joe's as we had success with these stores.

IT’S A #PARKERPARTY by Nisim Frank

Music is a lifeline to everything you doyour car rides, workouts, 4:00am New York City nights. Newcomer to the game, DJ Parker has made hit playlists forever at his SoulCycle classes, aptly called a #ParkerParty. Perfectly blending recognizable hits with upcoming talent, his fans avidly began researching just who he was playing. Enjoying a weekly #ParkerParty myself while growing my musical library, I was thrilled- but not too surprised- to have run into him DJing the GARCIAVELEZ SS16. The natural progression from studio to fashion event was an extension of who he was as a musical curator. Wanting to learn more, I sat down with Parker after coming off one of his most intense workouts, where we chatted about his gig with legendary nightlife personality LadyFag, how he creates his setlists, and why he won’t shy away from playing Kanye West’s new album despite all the controversy. Nisim Frank: How did you get into DJing? DJ Parker: Well I started teaching SoulCycle, and even before then, I have been making playlists my entire life and SoulCycle, the music part of it really called out to 2016.March

me and then eventually, people would come up to me and comment about how good the music was, so I thought to myself “Oh, that’s a natural talent, a natural progression from there”. I decided that I was going to go take classes and take classes on Vinyl and bought my own DJ controllers set which lead to me mixing all my classes while doing gigs on the side, trying to enter the nightlife aspect a little more. NF: Tell us a little more about some of the gigs you’ve done. DJ P: I’ve done two fashion shows last New York Fashion Week Mens, one for GarciaVelez which was a soundtrack to compliment the collection. I did a “Supply & Demand” event at Beauty & Essex which was really chill. I also DJed “Holy Mountain” which is a monthly party that nightlife celebrity Ladyfag throws at Slink. To date, that was my biggest gig so far. I got to meet Ladyfag and Azaelia Banks showed up and did a special presentation. NF: We have serious FOMO right now. DJ P: It was amazing! There were so many - 104 -

cool people there and I felt really comfortable up there. I felt like I knew what I was doing and now the next step would be just to continue to be doing more gigs. NF: When you put together a setlist, do you think about who you’re audience is going to be or do you compile the list strictly on your own? DJ P: I think its a little bit of both. If the inspiration that is there is something that can reach the entire audience, then I will go with that instinct and it’ll be fine. If I know I’m into something that is a little “weird” that isn’t widely known, I’ll throw it in with some Top 40 or something that people will know so that they have a connection to the music that I’m showing them. NF: How do you find music that nobody knows about? DJ P: Its weird, I feel like people ask me that all the time and I don’t feel like I find music that nobody knows about! The way I put it together is different because I’m not one to be scouring the blogs, I usually just have the music from iTunes. I look at albums that I like and then what some other people are listening to as well. NF: Name an emerging artist that we should be on the lookout for. DJ P: Shamir who is pop slash disco but with a little darker flare to it similar to Azaelia Banks. Its kind of gay, not Chelsea gay but very new edge New York City gay. He’s very young and he’s very connected to where music is going. NF: I know you don’t shy from playing a lot of Kanye West. Given his recent controversies with Taylor Swift, Deadmau5, etc, tell us why you’re so comfortable still playing Kanye while others are shunning away from him. DJ P: Well me and Kanye West share the same birthday (June 8th) and I’m really into horoscopes and connected into my “Gemini sense of being”. I feel like his honesty is very comforting because as a Gemini, you have these battling sides. You want to be the ‘family man’ but you also have these crazy sides to you. He’s expressing himself in a way that makes you feel okay 2016.March

- 105 -

to have those different sides to yourself and express that honesty. I think its a cosmic thing. NF: Another artist I know you love to play (who is one of my favorites) is Lorde. What do you expect or want from her next album? DJ P: I think Lorde really changed the way that I heard music- really! She’s the first person that played with electronica that felt more human, so I’m expecting her to really shock and surprise me again. I think her collaboration with Disclousre, the song “Magnets” was one of the best collaborations I have ever heard period. Talking about her weaknesses and talking about who she is has been so impactful. I’m a lyrical person so listening to those layered lyrics are amazing. NF: What is one song you have on repeat right now? DJ P: One of my favorites I have to say because the Kanye album just came out and each song is such a different genre, I have to say “Fade” which is going to be my favorite song for at least the next three weeks. My goal is to work with music across different industries whether it be at the clubs, fashion, or fitness. Really put my art out there in a way that I’m soundtracking moments and my Soul Cycle classes are soundtracking reality, bringing us all closer together and its a meditation that we all experience. Follow DJ Parker on his handles on Instagram, Twitter, and book your own 45 minute #ParkerParty at SoulCycle.

How to get the edge on happiness, meaning with philosophy and technology Did you know that people that start their days happy end up living healthier, more successful lives? In my experience as a musician and Wall Street technology analyst, I’ve explored a plethora of writings and ways we can improve ourselves – and how to become more happy. I’d like to share a few insights that I have found especially valuable – and I hope others will find a better appreciation for the role that proactive happiness – and the role of meaning – play in life, health and career. You don’t have to be naturally “born happy” though, just use a few techniques to prime feelings of happiness during the day and it will improve your performance, memory and energy.

“Every day is a good day” is my philosophy… but some days are inevitably going to be tougher than others. If you’re like most busy people, you have to juggle a lot of responsibilities across work, home, family and friends. On the days where everything is going great, it’s easy to stay cheerful and upbeat – but on the days where life throws you for a loop, it takes extra effort not to let yourself be dragged down by negative thoughts. Aggravations can seemingly attack you from every angle. For busy professionals, it can be a challenge to maintain focus with a positive mindset when it seems you’re constantly under assault by negative distractions. A positive mindset is the best asset you can bring to the table. High performers in the arts,

professional sports and business know that your mindset is key to winning. All else being equal, the competitor with the better mindest will prevail over the opponents with identical training and preparation. And the best mindset is one of happiness. Shawn Achor’s The Happiness Advantage: The Seven Principles of Positive Psychology that Fuel Success and Performance at Work aggregates a plethora of scholarly work and clinical studies on happiness, and the conclusion is clear - happy people do better, are healthier, and live longer. Achor came from humble origins in Waco, Texas and was accepted as a freshman at Harvard, where he spent the next 17 years doing graduate work and teaching. As a small town kid in the big city, he was constantly amazed at his good fortune to work with the brightest researchers, scientists and scientists in the world. What perplexed him early was how miserable so many of his fellow students were, they were constantly stressed out and depressed (especially the Law students) despite having a world of opportunity ahead at one of the premier universities in the world. Achor became a teaching fellow for Dr. Tal Ben-Shahar for a new course called Positive Psychology, which saw over 1,200 students enrolled in the first two semesters. What Achor found, in a meta analysis of over 200 scientific studies of over 275,000 people, was that happiness leads to success in nearly every domain

creativity, jobs and business. There’s scientific evidence that when people are “primed” to be in a happy state, evoking a positive emotion before engaging in a task or activity, they perform better. Positive emotions actually broaden our scope of cognition and behavior through a biological phenomenon. Positive emotions flood our brains with dopamine and serotonin, chemicals that not only make us feel good, but dial up the learning centers of our brains. This enables us to learn more, keep information in the brain longer, retrieve it faster, more neural connections and ultimately think more quickly and creatively when analyzing complex problems.

happy: Meditation is one of the most powerful happiness interventions. Neuroscientists have found that monks that spend years meditating grow their left prefrontal cortex, the part of the brain most responsible for feeling happy. Finding something to look forward to – when we have something to anticipate it can fire up the pleasure centers of the brain. Committing Conscious Acts of Kindness – acts of altruism to friends and strangers alike has been found to decrease stress and improve mental health. This can be as simple as paying for someone’s cup of coffee behind you in line at Starbucks.

The key point is that it’s important to start happy and the benefits will follow. How to start happy? This may seem simple in theory, but not everyone is born optimistic. Tragedy and adversity can take a toll on happy people, and everyone goes through up and down cycles with partners, on the job and in life.

Fill your surroundings with positivity – pictures of loved ones, favorite places, and decorations can not only boost your mood but improve working memory. It’s also important to keep negative emotions away- turn off that cable news station and watch less TV. Exercise provides both physical and psychological benefits that are incontrovertible.

There are several ways to prime yourself to be

Spending money on positive experiences can

also boost your mood. Go to a concert or a play, take a short trip, go to dinner with friends – these kinds of activities can bring more pleasure than buying material things. Using your personal strength, whatever it may be can boost your mood. If you love needlepoint (like legendary football player Rosie Greer), or cooking, or memorizing baseball statistics, exercising, this passion can help bring happiness. There are a lot of ways we can prime ourselves with happiness, and taking just 5 minutes out of the day to boost our mood can have broad-ranging effects. Martin Seligman, considered to be the father of Positive Psychology, defines three ways people can become happy: through pleasure, through engagement (with people or experiences) and from meaning. Pleasure and engagement can be fleeting, but useful as a way to prime our performance. Meaning of course is the most profound avenue to happiness – and is most powerful. Austrian psychologist Viktor Frankl wrote Man’s Search for Meaning in 9 days in 1945 upon being his liberation as a prisoner of Auschwitz. In his experience suffering

through some of the most horrifying conditions imaginable, he saw that happiness was worthy as a pursuit, but those in the camp that thought only of being happy were likely to give up and most did not survive. Rather it was those that found meaning, the desire to reunite with loved one, to rebuild their homes – to turn tragedy into triumph – that were able to survive and prevail. When we find meaning and purpose, and pursue them, happiness follows, and when we start with a little bit of happiness, we get smarter and healthier. The Great Republican Disruption By Ron Mwangaguhunga

the rise of Wallace, Pat Buchanan, Perot, Huckabee and Santorum in Iowa caucuses past – populism has been gaining momentum, just under-the-radar, for decades. Trump just came along at the right time in history.

Just as newspapers and magazines were disrupted during the Great Recession when ads shifted to digital, so is the Republican Party at present being disrupted by its lewd and swinish front-runner. “We had a low-information elite,” writes Peggy Noonan, no doubt breathlessly, of the Establishment, in the Establishment paper of record Wall Street Journal. Her argument, quite right, is that the elites should have been forewarned of this moment of American political exigency; they should have had the data on their impending demise.

For five decades, this unlikely Republican coalition held together. It was in retrospect a partnership almost entirety of opportunity. Nothing could be more Nixonian than the lusty Banker convincing the pretty waitress at the Club that he will take care of her. Someday, one can almost hear that negotiation playing out, I will leave my wife and we can be together. But that was never his intention. Now, after years of empty promises and countless soiled hotel room mattresses, long-suffering blue-collar Republicans want more.

No one saw Trump coming. If anyone says they did, they lie. In hindsight, however –

Enter: Chris Rock. After years of false promises of things getting better in LaLa Land re-

garding issues of representation on screen as well as recognition, people of color reached their breaking point with the Academy. Chris Rock got the gig to host the Oscars based on his reputation as a truth teller, the intellectual heir to Richard Pryor and Lenny Bruce. Chris was supposed to tell Hollywood, to its face, what it needed to hear. And yet his performance, though it had members of the Establishment in the audience at moments cringing, voiced to the elites not what they needed to hear, but what they wanted to hear. He was willing to jab at the power in the room, but not do so in a manner that might make for a real turning point on the discussion of race in America. “It’s just, we want opportunity,” said Rock. “We want black actors to get the same opportunities as white actors. That’s it.” Considering the stakes it was more of a lowrisk monologue than one that was truly edgy. Chris Rock’s mild exercise in truth telling served only to the reassure those with power and privilege in the audience. Hollywood liberals went home feeling that they listened, but that was about it. #OscarssoWhite was deflected. The performance was in essence more comedy club roast than the historic television moment that we were led to believe in the preamble leading up to the event. On explaining the subject of racism in Hollywood and why not a single person of color was nominated this year, Rock proved himself as hard as clay. “It’s a different type of racist,” Rock rolled. “Hollywood is ‘sorority racist.’ It’s like, we like you Rhonda, but you’re not a Kappa.’” Charmed, I’m sure.

shellacking of Super Tuesday, a well-rested Romney emerged from, presumably, his golf course pinks-and-greens. It was supposed to be one hell of a presser but of course it was not. The idea of hoisting Mitt “47 percent” Romney as a foil to the semi-savage Don Trump shows just how low-information the Republican Establishment really is. Trump, in due course, ate Mittens up, describing Romney’s losing campaign in lurid detail and, in the process, winning the news cycle. And so – here we are. We are at present witnessing the Great Republican Crack Up in real time. Although five decades in the making, it was a process accelerated by the loss of retail and manufacturing jobs caused by the Great Recession. Cable news ratings this election season are bound to be “yuge.” But if Trump actually wins the Presidency and not just the nomination of a disrupted party quite possibly in decline, the future of America will be anything but great.

Ron Mwangaguhunga is a Brooklyn based writer on media, culture and politics. His work has appeared within Huffington Post, IFC and Tribeca Film Festival , Kenneth Cole AWEARNESS, NY Magazine, Paper Magazine, CBS News.com and National Review online to name a few. He is currently the editor of the Corsair.

What, one wonders, happened to the razor-sharp Rock of old? That Chris Rock certainly didn’t shy away from drawing blood, from speaking Truth to Power. That Chris Rock would not explain away racial inequality in Hollywood by way of a Greek/non-Greek collegiate analogy. Omar Wasow, in TheRoot. com, got it exactly right: “Rock is like a weak intermediary struggling to navigate between the conflicting demands of an insurgent subordinate group and a recalcitrant dominant group.” Sound familiar? This brings me to Mitt Romney. In the first week of March, right after the Establishment 2016.March

Drink at least 3 liters of water every day. You want to eat every 2-3 hours to keep your insulin levels low and have your metabolism working overtime. Whatever you do, do not starve yourself! Think of it this way: your body gets scared when it’s not being fed so it keeps fat on reserve so that it doesn’t go hungry. Our bodies are big ‘ol scary cats and want to be comforted at all times. To help you, here’s a diet plan you can stick to: BREAKFAST (Meal 1) • 1 egg and 1/2 cup egg whites • 1 packet organic plain oatmeal, add 10 blueberries SNACK (Meal 2) • Handful of raw nuts (unsalted) LUNCH (Meal 3) • 4 oz of protein (tilapia, cod, chicken, extra lean turkey) • 1 cup veggies/greens SNACK (Meal 4) • 4 oz of protein (tilapia, cod, chicken, extra lean turkey) • 1 small apple DINNER (Meal 5 – post workout meal, immediately after workout) • 1 scoop of protein • 1 small banana

NOTE: If you get hungry, snack on cucumber and deli turkey

SNACK (Meal 6)

Last helpful tip: For an added bonus and to really tone up that booty, each and every time you use the restroom (which will be more than usual from all the water and natural diuretics), do 25 squats. Oh yeah! Feel the burn!

• 4 oz of protein (tilapia, cod, chicken, extra lean turkey or BISON) • ½ - ¾ cup veggies SNACK (Meal 7) • Sugar-free popsicle – this is mostly to help with cravings) 2016.March
