spending surge by 40-50%. VMS is an indispensable part of the security system as CCTV constitutes 55% of the total solution. It makes it even more important & critical that we as part of the industry evolve the product towards a more stable and yet open platform for handling 3rd party integration, Collaboration, Dashboards and Business analysis.” He further added, “When VMS takes control of the integration between other equipment’s like access control, intrusion & Fire and Building management it gives a holistic monitoring capabilities and tangible process improvements & ROI by 60%. I would say the market is evolving if more customer demands and uses a solution which provides a smarter approach to manage the safety & security by enabling new competencies in the offering of the VMS solution that would tackle the identified and new threats & challenges more effectively.”

involved. This has driven VMS providers to build their own suite of applications to support the Front-End VMS,” suggested Prakash Prabhu.

CHALLENGES AND OPPORTUNITIES “Consistent power supply is a basic requirement along with optimum bandwidth which currently is a challenge. Multi channel streaming or mass retrieval becomes an issue in case of bandwidth challenges. Also though the hardware – cameras installed are the HD cameras but streaming or storing high definition images might become an issue in case of non availability of optimum bandwidth. Some of the opportunities that we can envisage are its integration with other systems like analytics, RLVDS, ANPR. VMS benefits like multi operator & Mobility and has several added features like redundancy and disaster recovery, elaborated Shirshendu Gupta.

“The move towards standards in the surveillance industry is helping blur the lines between Open and Proprietary software. This provides a lot of opportunity in terms of interoperability of systems. It is now possible to have a single user interface for diverse systems like GPS data / POS data / Alarm interfaces / Access control etc. However with the increased scope of applications, we may also need to look at system Stability security and Quality of Service of such systems, especially when there are multiple third party applications 62

He further added, “The challenge remains in integrating these systems to achieve the full individual system functionality as open standards do not provide 100% feature performance and availability. Although there is a lot of talks about open systems by software only companies in the VMS space but most of the leading manufacturers have evolved over the period of time to offer the entire basket including Cameras, software, storage hardware etc . Thus trend is coming back to have a complete offer from a single OEM but maintaining the third party integration requirements and conformance to open standards.” According to Nidhi Nair, “The primary challenge is the bandwidth cost involved in IP video surveillance. This creates room for proper modes of streaming for bandwidth optimization and edge storage technology. The secondary challenge that the Indian market faces is the increasing rise in the criminal activities due to which there is a dire need for implementing a video surveillance solution which provides proper modes of real-time notifications to increase security in public areas. Also, there is lack of genuine well-engineered products.” “Security threats are always on the rise, so that continues to be an opportunity to be addressed by VMS companies. However security continues to be a peripheral function that does not get enough attention of business leaders and this is affecting the buying process. While the IP migration is surely providing an impetus to the security revolution, it is more a replacement than a migration, and this faces resistance from customers who have already invested in analog systems.
