DIN Solicitors specialise in various areas of law. This week our family law solicitor will be discussing frequently asked questions in relation to divorce:

I have been married for less than a year, can I get divorced? No. The law sets a complete bar on divorce applications where the parties have been married for less than one year. However there is an option of annulment. Contact us for more information regarding annulment. What are the grounds for divorce? There is only one ground for divorce – that the marriage has broken down irretrievably (beyond repair).

What can I rely on in support of my divorce? You can apply for a divorce and base your application on the following ‘facts’: • Adultery • Unreasonable behaviour • Desertion • 2 years separation • 5 years separation

Will I have to go to court? Undefended divorce proceedings are usually straightforward and can be dealt with by paper with no requirement for either party to attend court. If your partner defends the divorce then it is likely you will have to attend court and we can assist you with this. What if my spouse simply ignores the paperwork? We must satisfy the court that we have used all reasonable means to serve the divorce petition on your spouse. There are several ways we can do this. Please contact us for further advice.

How much will it cost me? The current court fee for filing a divorce application is £410. Our legal fee depends on whether the divorce is defended or undefended and if there is any other work that is likely to arise depending on the circumstances. Please contact us and we will advise you further. Follow us next week for Part 2... Shabnam Riaz

Rhino Role Model

Leeds Rhinos stars Mitch Achurch and Joe Vickery recently visited the Hamara centre, Leeds, sharing their experiences and advice with young people. Mitch a born and bred in Australian began by sharing how he started playing rugby from six-years-old, and followed his father who also played Rugby league. At such a young age he enjoyed the game and knew he would never be able to give it up. At the tender age of 18 he toured around England and began to see the world of Rugby. Throughout his career Mitch has battle through many injuries and has had to go through various surgeries. During these low points he felt he had to make a decision of whether to continue playing or stop. His passion took over and pushed him to work harder and recover. He has always been inspired by other rugby players and loved what they did. This has made him even more passionate about the sport and spurred him on to play. When growing up, the Rhino’s forward had always been smaller and skinnier than the other players. But luckily for him he had a growth spurt over two years where he grew taller and put weight on. He shared his secrets with the young people at Hamara – eating healthy and training hard. In his early years Mitch gained a contract for a year with the Penith Panthers. During this time he knew he had to prove himself so he trained extra hard. Half way through the year he was approached by the Leeds Rhinos who offered him a 4 year contract, to which he was ecstatic. He shared his experiences - as a young person he did not like school and left at 15 years old. He knew Rugby League was the only way forward for him and so he kept out of trouble training hard and staying healthy. His keen interest in nutrition and health has helped him to become a better player. Mitch is starting a course at University this September. Joe Vickery is ‘Not your average Joe’ at 6ft 2” and weighing in at 99kg the former Rhino’s star also spoke to the eager audience. Vickery, as a young person, initially started playing football and longed to play the sport at the highest level, yet at the same time also developed a passion for Rugby League. He started playing Rugby League professionally at the age of 18 playing for Australian team Gold Coast Titans which he had a two year contract. This again led to ROLE MODELS: Leeds Rhinos Players, Leeds Rhinos scouting him and Mitch Achurch and Joe Vickery

taking an interest in his skills. Rhinos offered him a contract. Joe’s advice to young people at Hamara was ‘continue your education’ just like him, it will always help. Joe has been educated well and has been to University before playing Rugby League he as well as working many different jobs to keep himself occupied The advice both players gave to the young people was stay in education and do well at it as it’ll help you to get a good job, even if it is Sport. They also highlighted the fact that sport has provided them both with guidelines to follow, and helped them to stay on the straight and narrow.
