As the sun shone down on Leeds last weekend, runners and walkers, young and old, embarked on Roundhay Park to take part in the first ever Give a Gift 5K challenge. Organised by Leeds-based Hamara Centre, the event was a huge success, raising more than £5,000 for the Children’s Heart Unit at Leeds General Infirmary, and Martin House Children’s Hospice. A fantastic turnout resulted in over 200 fundraisers turning up on the day to complete the five-kilometre challenge around the famous park. Competitive runners, fitness fans, joggers, walkers, children and even the disabled all turned up on the day, helping to raise vital funds for the two local causes. Habib Khan, Business Development Manager at the Hamara Centre, helped organise the whole day and was delighted with the turnout. “Our target was to raise a thousand pound for every kilometer so ‘5k for 5k’,” he explained. “The fact we were able to do this and even beat the target is brilliant, we were all overwhelmed by the response from the public. “It was a brilliant day and was more successful than we could have ever predicted. “Initial projections had suggested that around 100 people may turn up, yet the figure was much higher than that on the day with around 250 runners and walkers. “To say the whole event was only thought of six weeks ago, and the fact we had never done anything like this before, the support we received from the local community was exceptional.” One participant who enjoyed the day thoroughly was Naseem Akhtar. Ms Akhtar is the mother of former Bradford University student, Adel Hussain, who was tragically killed in a car accident earlier this year. Speaking on her behalf, her son, Sakib, spoke of how impressed the family were with the whole initiative. He said: “The money was being raised was for two very good causes. It was definitely
