“VISION IS THE ART OF SEEING WHAT IS INVISIBLE TO OTHERS” - JONATHAN SWIFT

INTRODUCTION My passion for interior design started at a very early age and grew throughout my childhood and into alduthood. From drawing perspective sketches of my bedroom to learning how to create a floorplan, my fascination with how a space effects peoples behaviors and moods has remained constant. My first year at The University of Alabama I studied marketing, but quickly realized it wasn’t something that allowed me to express my creativity. I followed my heart and changed my major to interior design, and have never looked back. The works in this portfolio display my growth over the past years as a interior design student. Each project has allowed me to develop my skills and challenge myself to learn something new every day. Color, architecture and project branding have become a focus for every space I design. I have classically trained in ballet for fifteen years, and it has given me a unique understading of line, movement, and shape and how these elements can be implemented to create a story within a space. I crave an environment that fosters creativity and pushes the boundaries of interior design. I hope to gain experience in a work environment that thrives on new ideas and can further develop my skills as an interior designer.

HISTORIC PRESERVATAION

THE JEMISON-VAN DE GRAAFF MANSION The first part of this course required accurate and meticulous recording of The Jemison-Van de Graaff Mansion in Tuscaloosa, AL. The entire senior class of interior design students worked together to take overall measurements, record original architectural details, and input information into AutoCad to build a construction document set. I was chosen to be a compiler of this information, and served as a leader guiding my classmates and making sure all drawings were accurate and delivered on time.

HISTORIC PROPERTY RENOVATION THE JEMISON-VAN DE GRAAFF MANSION

The second phase of this course was to take the recorded floor plan of The Jemsion-Van de Graaff Mansion and renovate the property into any type of business or facility of our choice. The University of Alabama attracts thousands of high profile clientele from around the world each year, and hosts large events for these clientele as well as faculty and students often. I observed a lack of event space that matched the vibrant and sophisticated style of these visitors in the Tuscaloosa area. The goal for this renovation of The Jemison Mansion is to provide an event and guest space for the university that offers a young and fresh perspective of the abundant history Tuscaloosa, AL has to offer.

THE CONCEPT

9

The concept for this space is inspired by a pomegranate. The color spectrum of the fruit, abundance and layering of seeds, and whimsical shapes all serve as inspiration for the design of The Jemison House. The shape of the fruit itself as well as the seeds mimic the octagonal motifs that can be seen throughout the architecture of the mansion. The space planning will be created with high profile university guests and social gatherings in mind. A modern perspective of the history of The University of Alabama will be accomplished by using original artwork from current students, and incorporating student work from a variety of majors throughout the house. The space will have a whimsical mid-century modern aesthetic with touches of the space’s historic southern roots.

THE BRANDING The logo design for The Jemison House was inspired by both the shape and form of a pomegranate and the architecture of the mansion. The designers of the home used octagonal motifs throughout the building and this is reflected in the logo.

11

FLOOR PLANS

The Jemsion House floor plan has to function as a versatile space for many different uses. The first floor was designed to be used for social events and as a gathering space for guests staying on the the third floor. The basement has two separate areas, one for guests rooms with ADA standards and elevator access, and another for offices and housekeeping. The third floor is a private area for guest use only, and consists of six bedrooms and a lounge area near the balcony.

12

LIVING ROOM THE JEMISON HOUSE

The living room of The Jemison House serves as a gathering place near the entrace of the home. Because this space is used for both guests and events, the seating options needed to be ample while maintaining the comfortable atmophere the rest of the house contains. Floor to ceiling light fixtures add ambiance and warmth to the room that would otherwise be lacking because of the soaring ceiling heights.

13

ORIGINAL ARCHITECTURAL DETAILS -

Living room pocket door detail drawing. The octagonal motif that inspired the concept for The Jemison House can be observed on the door face. The homes orignal architect placed details like these throughout the home.

ORIGNAL ARTWORK -

The artwork pictured above and on the fireplace in The Jemison House living room, was created using several integral parts of the university’s history. The President’s Mansion is pictured with quotes from Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird replacing the shutters. Bursting from the front doors are succulent plants representing the abundance of new ideas being produced at the university.

14

DINING ROOM THE JEMISON HOUSE

The dining room of The Jemison House is a versatile gathering space that can be utilized for both private dinners and large events. The oversized table sits on casters so it can be moved and used as a buffet table. The lightweight chairs can easily be removed from the room for more space. The wallpaper and draperies add texture and weight to the room contrasting the hard surfaces.

15

ORIGINAL ARCHITECTURAL DETAILS -

ORIGNAL ARTWORK -

The artwork pictured above and on the fireplace in The Jemison House dining room, was created using several integral parts of the university’s history. The silhouette of Paul Bear Bryant, one of the university’s most infamous football coaches, is backed with a map of Tuscaloosa. Surrounding them are succulents and national championship coins representing the lush history of the football program.

16

HOSPITALITY VILLA DI MOZZAFIATO

Villa de Mozzafiato is a botique hotel to be built in Naples, Italy that features and fine dining restuarant, bar, and retail shops located on the lobby floor. The scope of work includes the guest rooms on the third floor of the building. While all of these areas will have a unique design, they each will connect to the overall aesthetic and curated quality of the entire building.

THE CONCEPT

17

The space’s concept is inspired by rare gemstones like emeralds, sapphires, and rubies. The Villa di Mozzafiato, or “stunning villa” aims to exude a sense of mystery that will be accomplished through the use of rich textured fabrics, unique line drawing artwork, and lush foliage. These design elements will provide a an exclusive atmosphere and make the hotel a destination for both travelers and locals. A jewel toned palette, carefully selected brass finishes, and natural stone will serve as the main finishes of the hotel and create an environment as unique and beautiful as its inspiration.

THE BRANDING The logo design for Villa di Mozzafiato was inspired by the city of Naples, Italy. The branding for the hotel aimed to combine the traditional luxury of the town with the modern perspective of the hotel design.

FLOOR PLAN The floorplan of Villa di Mozzafiato is designed to draw visitors from both the tourism industry and locals of Naples. A large fine dining restaurant, retail spaces, and bar reside on the main floor.

19

20

RESTAURANT

VILLA DI MOZZAFIATO

The fine dining restaurant at Villa di Mozzafiato offers a one of a kind dining experience that reflects the romance and mystery of Naples, Italy. The seven thousand square foot space maintains its private atmosphere by using planter wall partitions to divide the space. Line art drawings are suspended from finished beams which help partition the room while still allowing light through. These beams also double as lighting, bringing the eye down from the soaring ceilings.

21

FLOORPLAN BREAKDOWN -

This focused furniture plan breaks down the front and back of house square footage, and the seating allowances for the restaurant and bar. The restaurant features a variety of seating including booths, banquettes, and free standing tables. All of the spaces in Villa di Mozzafiato follow ADA guidelines.

22

BAR AND DINING VILLA DI MOZZAFIATO

The bar and casual dining in Villa Di Mozzafiato complements the main restaurant while offering a more relaxed atmosphere. The bar was designed to relate to the restaurant but have a personality of its own. Lush foliage, overscaled artwork, and diffused lighting were used to make this large space feel comfortable and exclusive.

23

Lobby floor detail

BAR FRONT ELEVATION -

The bar at Villa di Mozzafiato features an expansive natural stone bar front and line art that complements the artwork in the restaurant. The collosal ceilings are offset by the columns and drop ceiling above the bar which create a focal point in the room. Planters with a built-in irrigation system line the drop ceiling, bringing lush foliage into the space without taking up valuable square footage.

24

GUEST SUITES VILLA DI MOZZAFIATO

The guest suites at Villa di Mozzafiato offer a completely different atmosphere than the rest of the hotel. All of these spaces, however, focus on line, shape, and texture. The guest suites continue the use of art as a focal point, but the pieces featured in the rooms reflect the vibrancy of the spaces they occupy.

25

Lobby floor detail

THIRD FLOOR FURNITURE PLAN -

The third floor of Villa di Mozzafiato features fifteen guest rooms, two roof decks, vending, and house keeping. A variety of room types were used to accomodate the vast array of travel groups that visit Naples, Italy every year. The rooftop decks offer dining and bar space that is open to guests only. This allows for privacy that the downstairs bars are unable to provide.

26

RETAIL

GIOIELLO PERFUME AND BODY Gioiello is a perfume and body store located in the hotel, Villa di Mozzafiato in Naples, Italy. This store was developed with a focus on lighting and retail design. Extensive research and site visits were used in the development of the space’s lighting and overall design.

THE CONCEPT

27

Gioiello is an extension of Villa di Mozzafiato, but its concept varies from the rest of the hotel. This space is inspired by the colors and intricacy of a topaz. This concept will be accomplished by varying the types of lighting to layer the space visually, and highlight the store’s merchandise. Dark moldings and stone floors will provide a sense of exclusivity to the space. Glass details will contrast the dark walls to add a delicate touch reminiscint of the products themselves, and an overall semmetrical balance will give Gioiello a sense of elegance.

THE BRANDING The store Gioiello, meaning “jewel” in Italian, is named directly after its concept. The branding also needed to reflect the qualities of the gemstone inspiration. This was accomplished using a delicate yet modern script to represent the feminity of a topaz. Underneath this script a bold font was used to translate the sharp lines and strength of the stone.

28

RETAIL CASHWRAP

GIOIELLO PERFUME AND BODY

The cashwrap in Gioiello reflects the delicate yet masculine concept of the store while also maintaining its relation to the rest of the hotel where the store resides. A plant wall adds a soft quality and layers of texture while the dark wood and stone ground the space. The neon sign and pendants provide a diffused glow that attracts patrons into the store and towards the counter.

29

FOCUS ON LIGHTING -

A critical part of retail design is the the lighting plan. Gioiello sells perfume and bath products which are generally small in size. Illuminating these areas with the proper type of lighting ensures customers eyes will land on the product thus increasing sales.

30

RETAIL DISPLAY

GIOIELLO PERFUME AND BODY The display of the products in Gioiello is just as critical as the lighting of them. By creating storage cabinets that mimic dressers the customer feels that they are getting a custom experience. Backlit translucent panels are positioned behind the perfume and provide a soft glow that illuminates the glass bottles to mimic the gemstone concept of the space. Arranging the bath products on residential-like tables give them a curated feel and elegant quality.

31

FINISHES -

The finishes in Gioiello were kept simple and clean so the merchandise would remain the focal point. Natural stone and dark woods are the primart materials used. Grapic tile is used beneath the retail tables to ground the space and mimic area rugs. Brass lighting and rust colored fabric bring warmth and texture to the store.

32

HEALTHCARE

AVALON SENIOR LIVING GROUP Avalon Senior Living Group is an assisted living facility located in Asheville, NC. This facility is to specialize in dementia and alzheimer’s patients. One of the main focuses of this building’s design was following ADA guidelines and using eco-friendly products. By thoroughly researching evidence based design, Avalon’s floor plan was perfected to promote healing through a safe environment that kept patients active, while straying far away from an institutional feel.

THE CONCEPT

33

Extensive research has been conducted that proves access to the outdoors can significantly improve the quality of life, and recovery times in an aging population. The concept for Avalon is inspired by this research in that it aims to bring the healing power of nature indoors by intentionally incorporating the building’s existing courtyard. Asheville, NC is known for its expansive mountain views, and by channeling the elements surrounding the building like: earth, fire, water, and air, Avalon stimulates the senses and provides an atmosphere of peace and tranquility for its occupants.

THE BRANDING The logo design for Avalon Senior Living Group needed to be simple while still communicating the concept of the facility. By replacing the line in the second “A” the logo reflects the the modern and elemental qualities of Avalon.

V

34

AVALON SENIOR LIVING GROUP PROCESS WORK

The interior courtyard of Avalon, pictured left, is enclosed with glass panels that allow the lush foliage and outdoor environment to be enjoyed by the building’s occupants while maintaining their safety. Researchshows that dementia and alzheimers patients tend to wander and get lost while in these facilities. The closed loop design of all the pathways, allow the users to wander without losing their bearings. Having a fully indoor atrium that can be viewed from every part of the building eliminates the confined atmosphere. Having an accessible outdoor environment is proven to improve overall mood in residents and quicken recovery times.

35

36

RECEPTION

AVALON SENIOR LIVING GROUP The reception at Avalon Senior Living Group is a calming and serene space that greets guests by stimulating the senses and creating a peaceful environment. The sound of water is proven to lower blood pressure and improve physical and mental health. By implementing a water wall behind the reception desk guests are immediately at ease and welcomed to the facility. The wood ceiling serves as a wayfinding tool leading guests from the door to the front desk.

37

CUSTOM MILLWORK -

The reception desk at Avalon Senior Living Group is built to be both practical and inclusive for those in wheelchairs. It is designed with ample storage and is finished with an eco-friendly bamboo veneer and recycled quartz.

38

REFLECTED CEILING PLAN AVALON SENIOR LIVING GROUP

The ceiling of Avalon Senior Living Group is designed to serve as a wayfinding tool for both visitors and residents. The corridors are finished with grilled wood finish that leads through all of the major pathways of the building. The natural material mimics the elements of nature and frames the interior courtyard. Semicircle gypsom board soffits mark major points of entry in spaces so that residents may use them as landmarks for locating themselves if they become lost. These wayfinding techniques make navigating this large building less daunting and allow residents to move freely on their own.

39

40

RESIDENT BEDROOM AVALON SENIOR LIVING GROUP

The display of the products in Gioiello is just as critical as the lighting of them.

42

EDUCATION

HOMESCHOOL CLASSROOM This homeschool classroom is a conceptual project completed for a family with four children ranging from ages three to seven. The family wanted a space that the would adapt as the children age. One of the children is autistic, so extensive research was conducted to design the best possible learning environment for the children and parents.

THE CONCEPT

43

The concept for the homescool classroom needed to be appealing to young children and older teens. Harry Potter is one of the most popular books in the world for both of these age groups, and the themes are whimsical and exciting making it the perfect concept for an adaptable classroom. The muted tones will appeal to all the children and parents, and function as a calming method for their child with autism. This magical environment will provide a fascination with learning for years to come.

PROCESS WORK

44

EDUCATION

HOMESCHOOL CLASSROOM The floorplan for the classroom is located in the family’s basement, giving it an entire level in the home. This allows the space to have several different learning environments, which makes it ideal for teaching children of different age groups. Smaller cozy nooks were created for privacy and quiet spaces. Children with autism often thrive in smaller spaces such as these as opposed to large open rooms.

45

DETAILS-

Concept furniture was created to communicate the unique and whimsical atmosphere that will be implemented throughout the space. A variety of learning spaces like sensory tables, desks, a multi-level play area, and train car reading space allow each day to offer new experiences in learning and provide a productive classroom environment for years to come.

46

MIXED-USE ANGEL’S SHARE

The Angel’s Share is a bistro and culinary institute in Edinburgh, Scotland. The bistro hopes to emulate the rich culture of the city from both the old and new town. Old town Scotland is lined with historic castles and cobblestone streets, and the new town is a center for architecture and technology and a much younger demographic. The Angel’s Share combines the juxtaposed parts of Edinburgh into a restaurant and culinary school that reflects the uniqueness and history of the city in which it resides.

THE CONCEPT

47

Inspired by the rich history of Edinburgh, Scotland, the Angel’s Share strives to coalesce the two distinct areas of the city. Old Town Edinburgh boasts castles and cobblestone streets that are well preserved and steeped in the city’s history. This historic section of Edinburgh is perfectly juxtaposed by the chic and sophisticated New Town, which creates the city’s eclectic atmoshpere. The Angel’s Share is designed to balance the historic architecture and history of Edinburgh, while also highlighting the modern culture and young demographic.

THE BRANDING Specifically focusing on the history of Scottish whisky in the city, the name, Angel’s Share, is derived from the term used when aging whisky. Angel’s Share is defined as the amount of an alcoholic drink that is lost to evaporation when the liquid is being aged in porous oak barrels. The logo was created to reflect the history of whisky in Scotland.

48

FINE DINING ANGEL’S SHARE

The main dining room of The Angel’s Share has an intimate feel that was created using wood architectual details to construc semi-private booths. A mixture of hard and soft surfaces were used to emulate the contrast of old and new town Edinburgh. The different flooring materials grounds the banquette seating and serves as a wayfinding tool in the dimly lit room.

49

FLOORPLAN -

The first floor needed to have ample seating while maintaning a private atmosphere. The bar and lounge located at the rear of the building offers a more casual dining experience. Banquettes span the walls, and a large fire feature breaks up the room and provides a warm atmosphere in keeping with the space’s concept.

50

OUTDOOR DINING ANGEL’S SHARE

The exterior facade of Angel’s Share reflects the concept of juxtaposing the old and new of Edinburgh, Scotland. Black metal and brick reflect the modern aesthetic of the interiors, and traditional architectural elements nod to the historic building types of old town Edinburgh.

51

THE PATIO -

The outdoor patio of Angel’s Share is designed to have a casual atmosphere. Banquettes and moveable bistro chairs provide a social environment that the dining inside cannot. A covered outdoor bar is a versatile space that can be used for events during warmer months.

52

CULINARY INSTITUTE ANGEL’S SHARE

The Culinary Institute at Angel’s Share is a state-of-the-art facility that celebrates and teaches the culture of food in Scotland. It is equipped with twelve individual workstations that include a range, hood, sink, and workstations for each student. Televisions can display directions for more hands on learning. The institute also features: lockers, walk-in storage and refridgeration, teaching kitchen, and a presentation room for guests.

53

FLOOR PLAN-

The floor plan in the culinary institute needed to provide many different and versatile spaces for learning. Separating the floor into two distinct spaces allowed for an area where guests can enter and see the classroom without entering the teaching kitchen. The presentation room includes a wine cellar and bar for pairings with the menu for guests dining.
