Strickland-Driggers 9th Annual Bull Sale

Page 1

Strickland – Driggers Welcome to the 9th Annual Strickland – Driggers Bull Sale We invite you to study the EPDs and pedigrees contained in this catalog and to come out and visit the farms of the sale participants to learn more about each bull. Much thought, planning and hard work has gone into getting this group of bulls ready to go home with you on sale day. Many of the bulls EPDs are well above the breed averages. Listed will be the percentile rankings that are 50% or better for EPDs and Indexes on each lot. This information will allow you to see how the bulls rank for that trait within the entire breed. Approximately one half of the sale offering would be considered heifer safe according to their EPD ranking within the breed for Direct Calving Ease and Birth Weight. Bulls are yearlings, long yearlings, and a few select lots of two-year olds. All the bulls have been developed in large pastures to allow for plenty of exercise. The bulls are not fat, but instead are athletic and ready to go to work. Bulls were selected for good disposition, sound structure and growth rate. They were limit fed a ration of consisting of soy hull and corn gluten pellets and grass or peanut hay. They have passed a complete breeding soundness exam by our veterinarian and have been ultrasound scanned for marbling and ribeye area. 100% of the bulls have been DNA tested and their EPDs are genomically enhanced. Many of the bulls offered in this sale are sired by breed leading A.I. sires and out of proven highly fertile, Reg. Simmental, Angus and SimAngus cows. They were bred to work in commercial cattle herds in the heat and humidity and to go out and sire calves that have the potential to make their new owners’ money in the cow business. The bulls are available for viewing anytime up until November 20 by appointment. They will be on site at Strickland Farm after noon on Friday, November 20. Coffee and doughnuts will be provided on sale day morning with a complimentary lunch at noon. Please look the offering over and feel free to contact any of us as we would gladly assist you in any way possible. CARCASS ULTRASOUND Dr. Dean Pringle, meat scientist professor at the University of Georgia and owner of Pringle Imaging collected ultrasound data from the bulls on September 10, 2020.

GENETIC DEFECTS All cattle sold are guaranteed free of known genetic defects unless indicated. Development Duplication Carrier Bulls (DDC) In August 2013, a genetic defect in cattle known as Developmental Duplication (DD) was introduced by all major cattle breed associations. Carrier bulls of (DD) are labeled in the catalog as (DDC). This defect is rarely if ever fatal. If a DDC bull is bred to carrier-free females, no calves would express DD.

EPDs GENETIC DEFECTS EPDs may differ from this catalog to the transferred registration papers. Printed Simmental EPDs are Fall 2020. Angus EPDs are current as of 11/1/20.

HERD HEALTH Routine herd health and vaccinations up to date on all animals. All bulls have been vaccinated and boostered for IBR, BVD, PI3, BRSV and Lepto. In addition, all bulls have been vaccinated and boostered for 7-Way Clostridial (Blackleg). The most recent booster vaccination was given to all bulls on November 3, 2020. All bulls were also dewormed with Synanthic paste dewormer.

American Angus Association Genomic Enhanced EPDs Genomic, or DNA, test results are used enhance predictability of current selection tools, to achieve more accuracy on EPDs for younger animals, and to characterize genetics for traits that are difficult or expensive to measure, such as feed efficiency, carcass traits in breeding stock or maternal traits in bulls. With the investment in genomic technology, animals who are previously placed into single animal contemporary groups benefit by receiving GE-EPD rather than interim-EPD calculations increasing the value of individual predictions. Genomic-enhanced EPD (GE-EPD) are important because they utilize genomic test results in addition to pedigree, performance and progeny data for increased reliability of an animal’s EPD (Fig. 1). Depending on the trait, GE-EPD on unproven bulls have the same amount of accuracy as if they had already sired 10-36 Figure 1. Information contributing to the GE-EPD. calves. If genomic results are received Table 1. In the American Angus Association Dry Matter Intake 12 9 Mature Height weekly genetic evaluation, the Yearling Height 17 15 Carcass Weight genomic results are incorporated Scrotal Circumference 15 11 Carcass Marbling into the evaluation using a single step method to calculate EPDs. Docility 12 17 Carcass Ribeye Incorporating genomic results in this Claw Angle 10 14 Carcass Fat way helps to better define the genetic 10 Foot Angle relationship among animals. With the traditional pedigree based approach (EPDs predictions without genomics), the relationships between animals is determined by pedigree alone. Pedigree would dictate all full-sibs, for example, would have a genetic relationship to one another of 0.5, and the relationship between grand-parent and grand-progeny would be 0.25. Because of the way DNA is inherited (passed down), differences in these relationships are present. The animal’s genotype will allow us to determine, for example, which flush-mates, or siblings, are more genetically related. In fact, genomic testing allows all pedigree relationships be better defined. These relationships are quantified using SNP data (genomic results) known as an animal’s genomic relationship. For example, if a newly tested animals shows to have a strong genomic relationship to an animal who is proven to excel for a trait like Marbling, than the newly-tested animal will increase for Marbling EPD. On the contrary, if an animal it found to be more related to a low performing animals in the pedigree its EPDs will adjust accordingly. Animals more closely related to ancestors with large amounts of actual performance data (weaning, weights, yearling weight, carcass data, etc.) and genomic results recorded will experience a greater benefit from genomic testing than those with less data recorded in the Association’s database.

Quick Reference to ASA EPDs and $ Indexes Expected Progeny Differences (EPDs): EPDs are the most accurate and effective tool available for comparing genetic levels. In using EPDs, the difference between two sires’ EPDs represents the unit difference expected in the performance of their progeny. For example, if sires A and B have EPDs of +10 and –5, a 15-unit difference would be expected in their progeny (moving from -5 to +10 yields 15 units). Key to using EPDs is knowing what units they are expressed in. For example, if the above case referred to weaning weight EPDs, A would be expected to sire 15-pounds more weaning weight than B. If calving ease were the trait, A would be expected to sire 15-percent more unassisted births in first-calf heifers; in other words, if B sired 30 assists in a group of 100 heifers, we’d expect A to require 15 assists. A percentile-ranking chart is required to determine where a bull’s EPDs rank him relative to other bulls in the breed. For percentile rankings or more detailed information about EPDs and $ indexes visit www.simmental.org. Listed below are the units ASA EPDs are expressed in: All-Purpose Index (API): Dollars per cow exposed under an all-purpose-sire scenario. (See below for more details.) Back Fat (BF): Inches of backfat. Birth Weight (BW): Pounds of birth weight. Calving Ease (CE): Percent of unassisted births when used on heifers. Carcass Weight (CW): Pounds of carcass weight. Maternal Calving Ease (MCE): Percent of unassisted births in first-calving daughters. Milk (MLK): Pounds of weaning weight due to milk. Marbling (MRB): Marbling score. Maternal Weaning Weight (MWW): Pounds of weaning weight due to milk and growth.

Ribeye Area (REA): Square inches of ribeye. Warner-Bratzler Shear Force (WBSF): Pounds of force required to shear a steak. Stayability (STAY): Percent of daughters remaining in the cowherd at 6 years of age. Terminal Index (TI): Dollars per cow exposed under a terminal-sire scenario. (See below for more details.) Weaning Weight (WW): Pounds of weaning weight. Yearling Weight (YW): Pounds of yearling weight. Yield Grade (YG): Yield grade score.

$ Indexes: Though EPDs allow for the comparison of genetic levels for many economically important traits, they only provide a piece of the economic puzzle. That’s where $ indexes come in. Through wellconceived, rigorous mathematical computation, $ indexes blend EPDs and economics to estimate an animal’s overall impact on your bottom line. The same technology that led to the dramatic progress in swine, poultry and dairy genetics over the last several decades was used to develop the following $ indexes: All-Purpose Index (API): Evaluates sires for use on the entire cow herd (bred to both Angus first-calf heifers and mature cows) with the portion of their daughters required to maintain herd size retained and the remaining heifers and steers put on feed and sold grade and yield. Terminal Index (TI): Evaluates sire for use on mature Angus cows with all offspring put on feed and sold grade and yield. Using API and TI: First, determine which index to use; if you’re keeping replacements use API, if not, TI. Then, just as with EPDs, zero in on the unit difference between bulls. (As described above, index units are in dollars per cow exposed.) The difference can be used to determine how much a bull is worth compared to another. Or, put another way, how much you can pay for one bull compared to another. For example, when buying an all-purpose-type sire, you can quickly figure a bull scoring +100 for API is worth an extra $6,000 over a +50 bull if both are exposed to 30 cows over 4 years ($50 diff. x 30 hd. x 4 yr. = $6,000). A percentile-ranking chart is required to determine where a bull’s index value ranks him relative to other bulls in the breed. For percentile rankings or more detailed information about EPDs and $ indexes visit www.simmental.org.
