DIXSON FARMS 2017 PRIVATE TREATY BULL SALE Welcome to our 2017 private treaty bull sale. The volatility of the markets over the last couple of years should sharpen our focus on profitability factors that we can control like pounds at weaning cow cost and maternal efficiency. These are factors that we have been focusing on in our breeding program for the last 18 years. Whether you are looking for a high growth terminal bull or a moderate cowmaker, you can find bulls in this offering geared toward future profits. If you have followed our program over the last 10+ years, you can see the progress that we have worked hard to achieve. This is a really unique set of yearlings with some pedigrees that you won't find anywhere else. We are again featuring some coming 2-year-olds from our summer calving low input herd and carried over a few of the younger yearlings from last year to increase the offering. Don't expect to see big fat 2-year-olds. They ran on grass all summer. We didn't pull them into the lot to start feeding them until early December. We are pleased to again have guest consignments from Klein Ranch (Heath Klein family) featuring some really interesting outcross red SimAngusTM yearlings. Again this year Tim Rippe joins us as a cooperator. These unique black 3 breed hybrid yearlings are the result of breeding some of his really good Balancer cows to Simmental bulls. We are really pleased with the results and think that you will be too. Expect the return of a good set of Domsch SimAngusTM bulls next year. All yearlings have been in the same management group since early October. Each herd has different management before weaning, so take that into account when looking at actual weights. Remember that EPDs are the best way to compare across herds. We believe that there were some environmental factors that affected our home herd weights. To increase the accuracy of their EPDs we have run the DNA enhanced EPDs. Look for the DNA symbol to know which bulls have the enhanced accuracy numbers. As always the bulls are unclipped. What you see is what you get. This year we will again have ultrasound data available for the yearling bulls which will be available in supplement form a week or so ahead of the sale. The base prices will be assigned at that time. Check our website a few days before the sale for all of the updated data. We will guarantee all bulls to be free of the Angus defect genes. If you buy a bull and are concerned about these defects, we'll be happy to run the test for you at cost. Most of the bulls are free by pedigree. Our private treaty sale will begin on February 18th. We encourage you to come and take a look at the bulls. If you can't be with us on the 18th, give us a call, and come and take a look at the bulls ahead of time. As always, we will provide free board until April 1st and fully guarantee all of the bulls. Give us a call for more information. We look forward to visiting with you about this exciting bull offering, and hope to see you on or before the 18th. Dixson Farms, Inc Carol Dixson

SALE FORMAT: This year our private treaty sale begins on February 18th. There will be bid sheets posted for each lot on that day. We will proceed with a simple silent auction format. The minimum bid for each lot will be available in the sale supplement a few days before the sale, and the minimum bid increment will be $250. At 1:30, we will begin closing bids with a live bid off. The bulls that are left after that time will be available first come, first serve at the base price unless otherwise noted.

DIRECTIONS

From Atwood: 5 mi. west, 2 mi. south, and follow the Beaver Creek Road west and south for 5 mi.

CLOSEOUT ORDER: This year, we will not set the closeout order until just before we close. We will close in the order of the high current bids on the silent auction. If the closing order is important to you, place a bid on your first choice during the silent auction to help set the closeout order.

From McDonald: 13 mi. east, 2 mi. south, and follow the Beaver Creek Road west and south for 5 miles

From Colby: 16 mi. north to Road E, 5 mi. west, 3 mi. north, 1 mi. west, 4 mi. north, 1/4 mi. west

SALE TERMS: Full payment is due the day of sale. Make checks payable to Dixson Farms, Inc.

SEMEN CHECK: All bulls sell guaranteed to pass a Breeding Soundness Evaluation, but it has not been performed yet. Bulls will be tested in mid to late March to get past the coldest weather and closer to breeding season for most people. If you buy a bull and need to have him checked sooner than that for an earlier pick up, notify us at check out and let Lyle know.

BULL CARE: All bulls will have free board until April 1st. We can keep the yearling bulls from April 1st to May 15th for $1.50 per day and the 2 year olds for $2.00. After May 15th, board will increase to $3 and $4 respectively.

SEMEN INTEREST: Each owner is retaining 1/4 semen interest in all bulls selling unless otherwise noted. The buyer gets full possession and salvage value of the bulls. This just reserves the right to collect semen at our expense and the buyer’s convenience and is a revenue sharing interest in the event that a bull has semen marketed in the future.

SUPPLEMENT SHEET: A supplement sheet will be available with current weights, scrotals, ultrasound information, updated EPDs, and base price about a week before the sale.

TERMS AND CONDITIONS: All bulls sell under the terms and conditions of the American Simmental Association.

DELIVERY: Economical delivery can be arranged by talking to Lyle.

GUARANTEE: All our bulls are 100% guaranteed for the first year. This means if there are any disposition, soundness, calving, or color problems, we will take the bull back and replace him or assist you in finding a replacement. The LAST thing we want to do is sell and perpetuate problem cattle. This is NOT mortality insurance. Once they leave our place, they are your bulls. All sight unseen purchases are guaranteed to be as represented.

CDI North Dakota 288A is a bull we purchased from C Diamond in 2014 as the High Seller. He is a purebred, red, calving ease bull, which is a cow maker in the making. He comes from a great cow family in Hooks Mika 141M. He is in the top 1% of the breed for API and TI. We are really excited about the females that he has already produced in his first calf crop. He will do well on heifers or cows.

Homozygous Black Homozygous Polled Star. We start this year's offering with a very complete individual that really represents our program. Denali stacks generations of our genetics with a focus on low birth weight, above average growth and carcass, with maternal values that have been range tested and proven. His sire was our Lot 1 high seller to Mike Domsch in 2014. He will work in a purebred or SimAngus program, as a heifer bull or as a cow maker. A bull that checks every box doesn't come along every day.

Our Low Input 2 Year Old Program

To those of you who are new to our program, these coming 2 year olds might require an explanation. They were born in late May and June by design. We handle this set of cows completely separate from the early spring calving cows as a true low input herd. They are required to graze grass through the winter with an occasional stalk or hay field. They get liquid protein or lick tubs, but have had only three bales in nearly ten years. Rather than push these bulls to maximize their growth, we grow them slow during the winter, then kick them out on grass all summer. We didn’t pull them into the lot until early December. Sure, we could have made them weigh a ton, but that wouldn’t have changed their genetics. We are serious about developing our own brand of Simmentals that can be productive in a low input system. These bulls are the proof. All bulls are virgin unless otherwise noted. A special note on weaning weights. Our summer calves were still on the cow on pasture when our November blizzard hit. We weaned them 2 weeks later, but we weren’t able to get weights at the time of weaning. We ran the DNA to verify their EPDs.

QUICK GUIDE TO ASA EPDs AND $ INDEXES Expected Progeny Differences (EPDs): EPDs are the most accurate and effective tool available for comparing genetic levels. In using EPDs, the difference between two sires’ EPDs represents the unit difference expected in the performance of their progeny. For example, if sires A and B have EPDs of +10 and –5, a 15-unit difference would be expected in their progeny (moving from -5 to +10 yields 15 units). Key to using EPDs is knowing what units they are expressed in. For example, if the above case referred to weaning weight EPDs, A would be expected to sire 15-pounds more weaning weight than B. If calving ease were the trait, A would be expected to sire 15-percent more unassisted births in first-calf heifers; in other words, if B sired 30 assists in a group of 100 heifers, we’d expect A to require 15 assists. A percentile-ranking chart is required to determine where a bull’s EPDs rank him relative to other bulls in the breed. For percentile rankings or more detailed information about EPDs and $ indexes visit www.simmental.org. Listed below are the units ASA EPDs are expressed in: All-Purpose Index (API): Dollars per cow exposed under an all-purpose-sire scenario. (See below for more details.) Back Fat (BF): Inches of backfat. Birth Weight (BW): Pounds of birth weight. Calving Ease (CE): Percent of unassisted births when used on heifers. Carcass Weight (CW): Pounds of carcass weight. Maternal Calving Ease (MCE): Percent of unassisted births in first-calving daughters. Milk (MLK): Pounds of weaning weight due to milk. Marbling (MRB): Marbling score. Maternal Weaning Weight (MWW): Pounds of weaning weight due to milk and growth. Ribeye Area (REA): Square inches of ribeye. Warner-Bratzler Shear Force (WBSF): Pounds of force required to shear a steak. Stayability (STAY): Percent of daughters remaining in the cowherd at 6 years of age.

Terminal Index (TI): Dollars per cow exposed under a terminal-sire scenario. (See below for more details.) Weaning Weight (WW): Pounds of weaning weight. Yearling Weight (YW): Pounds of yearling weight. Yield Grade (YG): Yield grade score. $ Indexes: Though EPDs allow for the comparison of genetic levels for many economically important traits, they only provide a piece of the economic puzzle. That’s where $ indexes come in. Through well-conceived, rigorous mathematical computation, $ indexes blend EPDs and economics to estimate an animal’s overall impact on your bottom line. The same technology that led to the dramatic progress in swine, poultry and dairy genetics over the last several decades was used to develop the following $ indexes: All-Purpose Index (API): Evaluates sires for use on the entire cow herd (bred to both Angus first-calf heifers and mature cows) with the portion of their daughters required to maintain herd size retained and the remaining heifers and steers put on feed and sold grade and yield. Terminal Index (TI): Evaluates sire for use on mature Angus cows with all offspring put on feed and sold grade and yield. Using API and TI: First, determine which index to use; if you’re keeping replacements use API, if not, TI. Then, just as with EPDs, zero in on the unit difference between bulls. (As described above, index units are in dollars per cow exposed.) The difference can be used to determine how much a bull is worth compared to another. Or, put another way, how much you can pay for one bull compared to another. For example, when buying an all-purpose-type sire, you can quickly figure a bull scoring +100 for API is worth an extra $6,000 over a+50 bull if both are exposed to 30 cows over 4 years ($50 diff. x 30 hd. x 4 yr. = $6,000). A percentile-ranking chart is required to determine where a bull’s index value ranks him relative to other bulls in the breed.
