Welcome to our 4th annual AffordaBULL sale. It has no doubt been a challenging year between the extreme heat and dry weather and army worms to boot! But we have managed to survive and we feel like we have an excellent set of Angus and SimAngus bulls ready for your evaluation. Again this year the bulls were hand fed once per day a ration consisting of very little if any corn. We feel this results in two things – docile bulls that are not overly fat. They were developed in large pastures with free choice hay. They are athletic and ready to breed a reasonable number of cows this coming breeding season. The bulls were ultrasounded for ribeye area, marbling and backfat by Dr. Dean Pringle, UGA Animal Scientist and owner of Pringle Imaging. The ultrasound data is in the catalog along with the carcass EPDs on each bull. The bulls were semen tested by Dr. Phillip Wilson of Southland Veterinary Services of Bowdon, GA and Ranburne, AL in October. All bulls are guaranteed to settle cows. A copy of the semen evaluation will accompany each bull purchase. All the bulls in the sale exceed the breed averages in many traits. For your convenience we have printed the percentile rankings for all EPDs. You will find many to be in the top 5, 10 or 20% of all bulls in their respective breed. Should you have questions about any of the numbers don’t be bashful. We want to help you in making your selections if we can. It is also again our pleasure to have some of our customers and neighbors consign females to the sale. These females have been hand picked especially for this sale. They are from good cattle people who have well established breeding programs. Most are bred for spring calves. See page 15 in this catalog for a general description of all the females that will be in the sale. A supplement sheet will be available sale day with updated breeding information. Between the two of us we have been breeding cattle for almost 100 years. While we both started young, we’re in it for the long haul. And while the markets may be lower than a year ago, we know that they will cycle back around. They always have. Now is not the time to skimp on your genetics. The calves sired by the bulls you purchase today won’t go to market for a minimum of another 18 months. Remember, quality and extra pounds always put more money in the bank. Quick Reference to ASA EPDs and $ Indexes Expected Progeny Differences (EPDs): EPDs are the most accurate and effective tool available
for co mparing genetic levels. In using EPDs, the difference between two sires’ EPDs represents the unit difference expected in the performance of their p rogeny. For example, if sires A and B have EPDs of +10 and –5, a 15-unit difference would be expected in their progeny (moving fro m -5 to +10 y ields 15 units). Key to using EPDs is knowing what units they are expressed in. For example, if the above case referred to weaning weight EPDs, A would be expected to sire 15-pounds more weaning weight than B. If calving ease were the trait, A would be expected to sire 15-percent mo re unassisted births in first-calf heifers; in other words, if B sired 30 assists in a group of 100 heifers, we’d expect A to require 15 assists. A percentile-ran king chart is required to determine where a bull’s EPDs rank h im relat ive to other bulls in the breed. Average Daily Gai n (ADG): Pounds of postweaning daily weight gain. Back Fat (B F): Inches of backfat. Birth Weight (BW): Pounds of birth weight. Cal vi ng Ease (CE): Percent of unassisted births when used on heifers. Carcass Weight (CW): Pounds of carcass weight. Docility (DOC): Percent of offspring achiev ing a docile (1) score. Maternal Cal ving Ease (MCE): Percent of unassisted births in first-calving daughters. Milk (MLK): Pounds of weaning weight due to milk.
Marbling (MRB): Marb ling score. Maternal Weaning Weight (MWW): Pounds of weaning weight due to milk and growth. Ri beye Area (REA): Square inches of ribeye. $ Indexes: Though EPDs allow for the comparison of genetic levels for many economically important
traits, they only provide a piece of the economic puzzle. That’s where $ indexes come in. Through well conceived, rigorous mathematical co mputation, $ indexes blend EPDs and e conomics to estimate an animal’s overall impact on your bottom line. The same technology that led to the dramatic progress in swine, poultry and dairy genetics over the last several decades was used to develop the following $ indexes: All-Purpose Index (API): Evaluates sires for use on the entire cow herd (b red to both Angus first -calf heifers and mature cows) with the portion of their daughters required to maintain herd size retained and the remain ing heifers and steers put on feed and sold grade and yield. Terminal Index (TI): Evaluates sire for use on mature Angus cows with all offspring put on feed and sold grade and yield. Using API and TI: First, determine wh ich index to use; if you’re keep ing replacements use API, if not, TI. Then, just as with EPDs, zero in on the unit difference between bulls. (As described above, index units are in dollars per cow exposed.) The difference can be used to determine how much a bull is worth co mpared to another. Or, put another way, how much you can pay for one bull co mpared to another. For examp le, when buying an all-purpose-type sire, you can quickly figure a bull scoring +100 for API is worth an ext ra $6,000 over a +50 bull if both are exposed to 30 cows over 4 years ($50 d iff. x 30 hd. x 4 yr. = $6,000). A percentile-ran king chart is required to determine where a bull’s index value ranks him relative to other bulls in the population. Important disclaimer : DO NOT co mpare index values of purebreds of different breeds, hybrids of different breed composition or purebreds with hybrids — our system was not developed to make valid comparison among these groups. Therefore, you must first determine the breed and breed composition appropriate for your herd and use index values to compare animals within that population.
