showrooms of international repute and research centres. The DECÒ – Design and Competitiveness – project forms a part of this framework. The project, which is promoted by the Artisans and Services department of Lombardy’s Regional Authorities and is coordinated by Cestec S.p.A., has now reached its second edition. Its aim is to promote and support young designers and Lombardy’s businesses. Thanks to DECÒ, businesses can make use of a fast-track to breathe innovation into production; at the same time, young designers can take advantage of the opportunity to make contact with production businesses in our region. As Domenico Zambetti, Councillor for Artisans and Services, declared: “The figures go to show that design remains an Italian business area which is very concentrated on a local level, with the Lombard centre still representing a sizeable part of the sector. Design is a strategic factor of production, and comprises traditional skills, cutting edge technical and scientific instruments, and a passion for aesthetics. Lombardy plays a pivotal role in the forces involved in Italy’s advanced tertiary sector as a whole. Ours is a Region where great ideas converge and are developed. They are ideas that can have a significant effect on the design world at large.” The project sees the direct involvement of Lombard businesses, to translate innovative ideas developed by young designers into tangible business initiatives, and if possible into products that can be manufactured and sold. In the first edition, presented during the last Salone del Mobile furniture fair against the stunning backdrop of the belvedere of the Pirelli Skyscraper, 45 projects by young designers were matched with as many Lombard companies, who made a prototype which was exhibited for the occasion. For this second edition, the selection process for which is currently underway, the project

has again been divided up with a competition which aims to select 50 ideas proposed by young designers on themes related to design for the home, for the office, for the environment and for community sites; at the same time, a pool of companies that might be interested in developing the selected ideas is being put together. The project affords young designers visibility within the sector, and public recognition, as well as the possibility to see their ideas brought to life. The opportunity to establish new professional relations and
promote the creation of business activities is also extremely useful. The project gives businesses the ability to do targeted, specific work with young designers; in addition, the DECÒ project provides outstanding visibility through exhibitions, a catalogue and promotion in trade magazines. A further incentive is given to innovation in the form of grants for creating the prototypes. Make a note for the next Salone del Mobile fair to see the results of DECÒ 2010. http://deco.cestec.eu
