The noise of time

From 22nd January to 18th Aprilthe Triennale of Milan will hostan important exhibition dedicatedto Gaetano Pesce, assiduous experimenter in architecture and design. The exhibition, sponsored by Macefand managed by Silvana Annicchiarico, has been designed as a reflection on issues which have their roots in the past, but also anticipate the future. It is divided into 9 sections, each analysing issues which involve themes at the core of the contemporary debate on the culture of design. The exhibition is presented here by the reflections of Pesce himself. “Personalisation of the series” presents the analogy between the search for freedom by the individual and that of objects: the new found freedom of the slaves has coincided in history with the loss of their role and therefore with death; likewise, by self-determining themselves, objects will lose their use but claim their diversity. The reflection on the importance of image in the mass media and in school learning, dominates the section entitled “Of expressiveness: between representationalism and abstractionism”; while thoughts on innovation are presented in “New materials, new techniques and new languages”. “Femininity and masculinity as motors of design” sets masculine qualities, representative of the “public” aspect of thought, against the feminine ones, carriers of the “private” aspect. The section entitled “The canon of beauty and the beast” confirms the ideal of beauty in our time, that is of reality; while “Design as political expression” affirms the right of the authors to express their own political views. Art must allow the artist to be freeto declare his personal religious dimension; this is the assumption propounded in “Design as religious dimension”. The Section “Participation of the senses” stresses the importance of expressing oneself with the use of all the senses, while the last section “The noise of time”, offers a reflection on the total subjectivity of our relationship with time.
