Art and CeramicsAt Algiers an interesting exhibition has taken place displaying the most important works of ceramic artists who have worked in Sicily. The exhibition “Art and ceramics” held from 31/3 to 15/4/04 was the occasion to reflect on the most significant ceramic works produced in Sicily in the last ten years. Recently some Sicilian companies have made their ceramic workshops available to artists to create their handmade pieces. These companies include the old Caleca firm, already renowned in the 50’s for the work of artists like Gianni Dova, Aligi Sassu and Dartel.To relive this experience, nine internationally-acclaimed Sicilian artists (Nicola Salvatore, Ignazio Moncada, Alfonso Leto, Keizo Morishita, Stefano Pizzi, Michele Spadaro, Filippo La Vaccaro, Ugo La Pietra e Sofia De Mas) were invited to experiment on ceramic forms and décor presenting a collection of works entitled “Artists in the plate”, exhibited in Algiers and subsequently donated by the Caleca family to the Ceramics Museum of Piatti.Another interesting company enterprise, presented in an exhibition by the work of Carla Accardi, Arnaldo Pomodoro and Pietro Consagra, has been “Nuove ceramiche Gibellina”, a company which was established in 1982, following the setting up of a training school for ceramic craftsmen to execute works of art designed by architects or artists, to be placed within the
