traditional forms but also uses topics of the current expressive experience, such as structure’s analysis, decorations, chromatic operations of discordance and harmonic correspondence. The plate, the vase - commom forms in Giorgi’s art – evolve into a fascinating field in which the tactile quality of the form and the sensitive quality of decorations match perfectly. During the process of art making, the artist makes use of a lot of instruments and devices that include artisan techniques such as preparing the enamel and the dosage of oxide by himself, polishing and thinning clay in order to get special colours. Every Giorgi’s work is a new field to discover and analyze where the different concepts and readings are related to the specific expressive necessities. A sort of freedom from limitations comes out, and it is connected to Giorgi’s
artistic background and experience: teacher, headmaster of Art School, designer, craftsman and experimenter. I refer also to the specific situation of Civita Castellana that, wellknown for its great production of ceramics and for its many firms, was not overcome by the weight of tradition. This metaphorical “white sheet” and its freedom from ancient models gave the opportunity to try new forms and apply modern and fresh techniques. The designer worked in this situation and developed methods and processes for creating new forms as well he studied the manufacturing process and the distributive trades. An utopian aspect characterizes the manufacturing process, since some responsive and broad-minded managers support the artistic experiments and the production of items that are a novelty in the market. Franco Giorgi plays a central role
in this operation that can be surely defined cultural. Giorgi cooperates with Civita’s firms and conducts research into projects of items that although mantain functional features, develop into forms that underline the plastic coefficient and approach sculpture. As above mentioned, in this context the producer plays a significant role, since he is an active promoter that provides the artist with tools to conduct experiments and he also takes the risk of pushing new products, although the risk always develops into a solid investment that improves the firm’s image and oopens new prospects for production. The objects showed testify and confirm what we asserted as they were realized thanks to the support of Varm Ceramics, a Civita’s firm with which Giorgi is fruitfully cooperating since years.
