Antoni Muntadas Creer en el arte | Believing in art Los medios de comunicación son su principal materia prima. No sólo porque sus historias lo inspiran o porque algo de ellos se ve en sus obras, sino porque a través de su trabajo Muntadas los critica. Cuestiona también los fenómenos sociales, transformándose él mismo en un agente comunicador de percepciones y conocimiento. Mass media are his main raw material. Not only because their stories inspire him or because some of them are seen in his works, but because through his work Muntadas criticizes them. os espacios públicos –un museo, centro comercial o estación de metro–; los lugares abiertos –plazas, avenidas, campos deportivos–; o las esferas público-virtuales como las redes sociales o teléfonos móviles, se han convertido en lugares idóneos para el arte contemporáneo. Producir arte como acción comunicativa, interviniendo críticamente en los espacios comunes, se ha convertido en algo frecuente en nuestra época y en cualquier ciudad del mundo. Las nuevas tecnologías no sólo nos ofrecen información, también nos permiten participar de la reflexión y opinar ampliamente en el debate que abre el arte a través de estos medios de amplio espectro. De esta manera, también se beneficia el artista al encontrar retroalimentación sin reparos sobre su trabajo expuesto.

ublic spaces –a museum, shopping centre or a subway station–; open spaces –playgrounds, avenues, sports fields–; or publicvirtual circles like social networks on computers or mobile phones, have become ideal places for contemporary art. The production of art as an action of communication, critically intervened in the common spaces, has become something frequent in our times in any city of the world. New technologies do not just offer us information, they also allow us to participate in the reflection and give open opinions in the debate that art opens through these broad range media. This way, also the artist benefits by encountering a feedback without reservations about his/her exhibited work.
Antoni Muntadas es ineludible cuando se habla de arte público y tecnología. Nació en Barcelona en 1942, estudió ingeniería y desde 1971 vive en Nueva York. Inició su trabajo con la pintura, pero luego de su mudanza a Estados Unidos la sustituyó por el uso de nuevos medios, que le abrieron una plataforma ilimitada para difundir ideas. El artista, asociado al media art y al arte conceptual, recibió el premio Nacional de Artes Plásticas 2005 y el premio Velázquez del 2009 en España. Ha participado en las bienales de Venecia y São Paulo, obtuvo becas de la Fundación Guggenheim y el New York State Council of the Arts Award, entre otros, y dedica un tiempo importante a la docencia.
We cannot avoid Antoni Muntadas when we talk about public art and technology. He was born in Barcelona in 1942, studied engineering, and since 1971 he lives in New York. He started with painting, but after he moved to the United States, he switched to new media, which opened up for him an unlimited platform for expressing his ideas. This artist, who is associated with media art and conceptual art, received the 2005 Arts National prize and the 2009 Velazquez prize in Spain, has participated in the biennales of Venice and São Paulo, received the Guggenheim Foundation grant and the New York State Council of Arts Award, amongst others, and he dedicates an part of his time to teaching.
