South Africa Trip Indigo skate camp 13 ans, c’est le nombre d’années que j’ai passées à faire du BMX jusqu’à maintenant et pendant ces années, je dirais que j’ai roulé plein de spots incroyables. En raison de l’état actuel du BMX et de la hausse de la popularité du street riding, quand je dis «incroyables spots», la première pensée qui vous vient en tête pourrait être quelques banks, ledges et marches. Pas moi! Moi je suis plus difficilement bluffé par un spot que je roule. Début janvier de cette année, j’ai décidé de prendre l’avion et de traverser la moitié du monde pour rouler une mini rampe. Cette mini rampe est le skatepark «Indigo», située dans la province de Natal en Afrique du Sud. Située sur les bord de la rivière «Umgeni» dans la vallée des 1000 Collines et enfouie entre Durban & Pietermaritzburg (les deux principales villes de Natal). La rampe elle-même est idéale, elle fait 9 pieds avec une extension de 11 pieds, c’est la rampe parfaite pour envoyer un bon gros air dessus avec des hips dans une mini de 5 pieds. Il y a derrière la rampe, une piscine très proche. On trouve des rampes à la pelle donc vous devez sûrement vous demander ce qui rend cette rampe si différente ? Eh bien, c’est rare d’être assis en haut d’une rampe qui est entourée par des huttes de boue où vivent les habitants et de regarder la vallée en voyant la rivière Umgeni coupant à travers les montagnes. C’est un réel plaisir de rouler à l’Indigo, des skaters locaux ont carrément mis la rampe en pièce en envoyant des énormes air et des grind sans chaussures! Incroyable! La raison, vous demandez une rampe en plein milieu de la brousse en Afrique du Sud? Eh bien, l’Indigo est l’enfant chéri du skater sud-Africain Dallas Oberholzer. Commencée il y a huit ans, l’idée était d’introduire la planche à roulettes à une communauté zoulou et d’aider les gens de cultures et d’horizons différents à partager un intérêt commun dans les sports et les activités. J’aurais rêvé d’être là 8 ans plus tôt, quand les constructeurs l’ont fabriqué. Juste pour croiser le regard des locaux du village d’Isithumba de la vallée des 1000 collines, cela n’a pas de prix. J’ai entendu dire que cette rampe a eu un retour très positif pour le village. Indigo a dit “La plus délicieuse progression est celle de nos skaters. Leur nombre a grandi tandis qu’ils commencent toujours plus jeunes. On voit maintenant des enfants de 5 ans qui droppent la rampe de 11 pieds pendant que les filles Zulu rident régulièrement nos rampes. Pour les skaters les plus anciens, beaucoup sont maintenant employés en tant qu’entraîneurs et gardiens de notre skate Park à plein temps. Un programme d’échange a aussi été mis en place pour les jeunes de Durban et de Bremen en Allemagne. L’indigo était juste l’un des nombreux trésors cachés que j’ai découvert lors de mon trip en Afrique du Sud et si vous êtes en quête d’aventures, je vous recommande sincèrement d’y aller. C’est très simple : vous devez d’abord voler jusqu’à l’aéroport international de Shaka Zulu puis prendre la N3 vers Pietermarizburg et une fois sorti de l’autoroute, tournez à droite quand vous voyez le panneau “LAND ROVER EXPERIENCE”. Facile !
Thirteen years, that’s the amount of time I have been riding BMX for now, and in that time I would say that I have ridden my fare share of amazing spots. Due to the current state of BMX and the increasing popularity in street riding, when I say amazing spot, the first thought that might pop into your head might be some wild bank/ledge set up or even a set of ropey stairs. Not me! Myself, I am more one for my surroundings when it comes to getting truly stoked on a spot that I am riding. That being said at the beginning of January this year, I decided to fly half way around the world to go and ride a mini ramp. This particular mini ramp happens to be the Indigo skate camp situated in the province of Natal South African. Located on the banks of the Umgeni River in the Valley of 1000 Hills and nestled between Durban & Pietermaritzburg (the two main cities of Natal). The ramp itself is ideal, in the region of about nine foot with an eleven foot extension, it is the perfect ramp to blast a good solid air on it also hips into a five foot mini and has a really tight pool behind it. Ramps are a dime a dozen though so what makes this ramp so special you may ask? Well for one it’s not too often you get to sit on the deck of a ramp that is surrounded by mud huts where the locals live, or look ahead through the valley to see the roaring Umgeni river cutting through the mountains. Indigo really was an absolute treat to ride, from its surroundings to the local skateboarders who absolutely rip the ramp to pieces, blasting huge airs and fast grinds all with no shoes! Incredible! The reason, you may ask for a ramp being out in the middle of the bush in South Africa? Well, Indigo skate camp is the brain child of South African skateboarder Dallas Oberholzer. Started over eight years ago the idea was to introduce skateboarding to a Zulu community and to help people from different cultures and backgrounds to share a common interest in sports and activities. I would have loved to have been there eight years ago when the builders turned up to construct the ramp. Just to have seen the look on the face’s of the locals of Isithumba village in the Valley of 1000 hills, it must have been priceless. That being said you can see what a positive force the camp has been for the village. Indigo say that “The most delightful progression is that of our skaters. Their numbers have grown while their start up age has shrunk. We now see 5 year olds dropping down the 11 ft vert ramp while Zulu girls take to riding our ramps on the regular. For the older skaters, many of them are now fully employed coaches and caretakers of our skate park”. The park has also established a youth exchange programme with Durban’s sister city, Bremen in Germany. Indigo skate camp was just one of the many hidden treasures that I came across on my trip to South Africa and if you are up for a bit of an adventure I seriously recommend going. It’s really easy to get to. Firstly just fly to Shaka Zulu international airport then bomb it up the N3 towards Pietermarizburg and once you get off the highway just turn right when you see a sign for the “LAND ROVER EXPERIENCE”. Easy peasy!
