Je fais du BMX depuis 18 ans et du flat depuis 13 ans. Edgar : Edgar Ramón Yllanes, 27 ans, je vis à Capiata à 20km d’Asunción. Je ride depuis 10 ans.

Dites-nous un peu comment le flat est né au Paraguay ? Celso : Quand que je suis rentré dans ce milieu, le Flatland était déjà en place. Début 2006, j’ai commencé avec mon frère Ruben. C’était difficile d’avoir des pièces de vélo mais on utilisait ce qu’on avait avec les moyens de l’époque. Erwin : J’ai commencé le BMX il y a un moment, dans les années 80. En ce qui concerne le Flat, j’ai commencé à faire des tricks en 1988 en tant que membre du team freestyle. À partir des années 90, c’est devenu plus underground mais ça n’a pas stoppé ma motivation et je continue le Flat encore maintenant. Edgar : Le Flatland a émergé ici à peu près comme partout ailleurs dans les années 80. Après cela, il y a eu une pause qui a durée jusqu’aux années 90 quand cette discipline a commencé à se séparer du street. Comme on le sait tous, ici, au Paraguay, il y a eu un moment où tout le monde faisait de tout. Puis les gens ont commencé à organiser des contests exclusivement de flat, ce qui a fait comprendre aux gens que c’était une discipline différente. C’est aussi grâce aux personnes qui avaient l’habitude de voyager en Argentine. Ils ont permis de montrer comment est réellement le flat dans ce pays.
Tell us a little about how the flatland scene Paraguay was born. Celso : As far as I’ve been into this, the flatland scene was somehow settled. In early 2006 I started with my brother Ruben. There was no easy availability of bike parts, but as always we managed to find a way to use what we had at the time, but eventually it got better. Erwin : Particularly, I started riding BMX many years ago, in the 80s. Concerning flatland, I started doing tricks since 1988, as part of freestyle show teams back in 1989. From the 90s on, the scene became more underground, but that didn’t stop my motivation and I continued riding flat until today. Edgar : Flatland emerged here almost at the same time as everywhere, in the 80s. After that, there was a pause that lasted until the 90s, when it began to separate from street riding. As everyone knows, here in Paraguay there was a time where everyone did everything. Then, people started to organize exclusive flatland contests, making people understand that it was a different discipline. This initiative was supported by a brand that only supported flatlanders and that made it known everywhere, and also with the help of people that used to travel to Argentina, who helped to know how was the real flat scene in that country.
Au fil des années, comment le flat a-t-il évolué au Paraguay ? Ce changement a-t-il été bénéfique ? Celso : Au fil des ans, le flat a changé sur tous les points de vue. Il y a un très bon niveau, de nouveaux riders, et ce que j’aimerais le plus souligner c’est que chaque année nous sommes plus proches quand il s’agit de se rassembler et de rider : tout le monde a des idées pour un évènement, ils donnent un coup de main pour obtenir de bons résultats et l’on espère que cette année sera meilleure que jamais! Erwin : Je pense que cela a été bénéfique. Le Flatland a beaucoup évolué au niveau des vélos : des nouveaux tricks, il y a du sang nouveau. Cela nous a fait comprendre que le flat a une réelle place dans ce pays et que ce sport ne peut plus être arrêté. Les jeunes ont donné du pouvoir à cette discipline et tout le monde ici continue de la soutenir. C’est dur à cause des choses que nous traversons mais aussi car les gens veulent généralement juste voir ou participer aux autres sports traditionnels. Cependant, nous sommes doucement arrivés à ramener le flat dans les autres villes et à l’intégrer dans les autres évènements sportifs. Edgar : Les années passées ont eu beaucoup d’influence sur l’évolution du flat au Paraguay. Les rivalités entre riders ont cessé et l’on a essayé d’adapter le flat à la nouvelle école. Le changement a été tellement radical jusqu’ici que je suis surpris de réaliser qu’en seulement un an nous avons laissé nos tricks old school de côté pour en apprendre de nouveaux. Over the years, how has the scene in Paraguay changed? Has this change been beneficial? Celso : Over the years, our scene has changed a lot from all points of view. There is a very good level, new riders, and what I highlight the most is that every year we are closer when it comes to getting together and ride; everybody has ideas for an event, they give a hand with whatever they can for getting goods results, and hopefully this year will be better than ever! Erwin : I think it was beneficial. Flatland has matured a lot in regard to bicycles, new tricks, and the young blood that made feel that this sport has a place in this country and that it can’t be stopped. Young people gave it that power and everybody here keeps pushing this sport; it’s hard because of the things we go through and because people only want to see or participate in other traditional sports, but we went ahead slowly bringing the flatland to other cities and showing it in other sports events. Edgar : The years did everything in the flatland in Paraguay. The rivalry between riders ended and we tried to adapt to the new school. The change was so radical here that up until now I’m surprised to realize that in only one year we left our oldschool tricks aside to learn all the new moves. We began to have videos, photos and events; the change was great because before it was a struggle.
