A lot has happened since the last issue. Obviously there’s been the festive break and Christmas was, for many, at least a decent upgrade on the previous year. The same seems to have been true for New Year too. Pandemic partying… well it’s just not the same, well not for the vast majority of the population that is! And then it was gone. And looking back, for me, the best thing of all about it all was that Omicron didn’t turn out to be the predicted Christmas Grinch at all, and in fact, it appears to have been the best present of the lot and possibly a real turning point in the pandemic – let’s hope so anyway. It certainly seems to have played a factor in the ‘Plan B’ restrictions being scrapped and the timing of that could not have been better. Why I hear you ask? Well for the UK wet leisure industry, the first major event of any year is the SPATEX exhibition, which is returning to the Midlands and the renamed Coventry Building Society Arena at the start of February. So with restrictions lifted, that can only be a good thing for anyone involved with the event, especially as it is celebrating its 25th year. For anyone who has a need for new products, services, some inspiration or to improve their industry knowledge and understanding, SPATEX is the place to be. Featuring around 100 high quality exhibitors, the three-day event helps to keep the trade up to speed with the latest trends and technologies – and that’s an even bigger requirement than usual given the enforced break due to the pandemic. SPATEX also offers a unique opportunity to catch up with old friends, network with a wide range of colleagues and have some normality back in our lives too!

Throughout the magazine, we take a closer look at various key subjects that span a number of sectors across the industry. For example, after enjoying another great year, we take a closer look at a number of new models and brands available in the hot tub sector, plus we examine various options for water sanitisation which use a variety of ingenious technologies. UV is just one of them but that gets its own dedicated feature. We also take a closer look at some of the products that are keeping the water flowing in pools and spas with our pumps feature and highlight ten products that will take the effort out of cleaning pools and spas in the season ahead. In his regular piece, Jamie Adams takes a look at the subject of family businesses which is a subject he knows all about given his numerous years working within one! Talking of years, we’ve a 50th anniversary piece on Plastica, the East Sussex-based manufacturer and distributor who have gone from strength to strength over recent years. In a follow up piece from last issue, Luke Griffiths from the STA provides an introduction to active free chlorine and focuses on the impact pH has on the effectiveness of it, plus there’s also useful updates from the BSPF, SPATA, BISHTA including a look at the many benefits membership offers to businesses. Finally, we’ve also got our round up of all the latest industry, people, product and eco news from both here in the UK and further afield. So with this first issue of the year covered, all that leaves me to say is here’s to the end of the pandemic, a return to some normality and a successful year!

Continuing Progress At The Carnival Hub In Wokingham Work on Wokingham Borough Council’s flagship new leisure centre, library and cultural space continues apace with the Carnival Hub beginning to take shape ready to open in summer 2022. Once finished, it will offer a range of great facilities including swimming pools and a splash pad, spa area, a variety of sports facilities, cafe and a large library space. Since the topping out ceremony was held in October work has nearly been completed on external cladding and the focus has moved to the inside of the hub. Changing areas are being fitted out, stud walls are going up and underfloor heating is being installed in key areas. Both pools have now been tiled and a lift installed to make the main pool accessible for those with disabilities. The teaching pool has also been fitted with a moveable floor allowing

8 February 2022 SPN 8+11+13_SPN_February_2022_News_General.indd 8

the pool depth to be adjusted to accommodate a wide range of classes and activities. Work to make this one of the most energy-efficient leisure centres in the country continues including the installation of solar panels and air source heat pumps on the roof. Cllr Parry Batth, executive member for environment and leisure, said: “In recent years we’ve invested heavily in new and improved leisure facilities for our residents across the borough. We are sure the new hub will prove a real hit, like the new Bulmershe leisure centre in Woodley when we opened it in 2020. As work has moved inside you can really see the centre start to take shape and understand what a fantastic space this will be and how it will help us offer a much wider range of activities than before.”

NEWS

IN BRIEF A VISION FOR SPORT AND LEISURE IN HALIFAX A brand new, top-class leisure centre and swimming pool for Halifax could move a step closer to construction, as Cabinet Members discuss the next stages of an ambitious project to bring major benefits to the local community. The project needs to be delivered to a tight timescale to reduce the impact of unprecedented increases in construction costs, following significant material, labour and energy price inflation, and to benefit from the money granted to Calderdale by Central Government from the Levelling Up Fund before its spend deadline.

WILLMOTT DIXON TOPS OUT AT £16M LOW-CARBON LEISURE CENTRE The last external piece of a new carbon-efficient leisure centre building in Nottinghamshire was put in place in December, and it marked a milestone moment for national contractor Willmott Dixon. The construction firm was awarded £16m project earlier in 2021, courtesy of part funding from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), to develop Bingham Arena and Enterprise Centre in Nottinghamshire on behalf Rushcliffe Borough Council. Willmott Dixon and other partners of the project joined together in December to see council leader, Simon Robinson, lay the final part in the fabric of the new two-storey leisure centre building. The act meant that part of the site was then ready for a carbon efficient plant to be installed, which will power its 25-metre, six-lane swimming pool with spectator seating and teaching pool. The overall development will reduce carbon emissions by 78% compared to other leisure centres in the borough and by 82% for similar office developments.

A Swimming Pool Fit For King’s

Sitting on an 80-acre campus in the Cheshire heartland of Macclesfield, King’s School is renowned nationally for its excellence in sport. When the governors of King’s made the decision to upgrade their sports facilities with a new 25m x 13m (1-2m depth) swimming pool for training, competitions and galas, Warwickshire-based Buckingham Pools quickly rose to the surface as its builder of choice. In turn, Buckingham chose its tried and trusted supplier, Certikin International, to provide much of the pool’s equipment. Taking some eight months to

design and build, the six-lane indoor pool is the jewel in the crown for a school that has in recent years produced pupils that have represented their country or been national champions in 22 different sports. Certikin supplied the complete filtration system – two SLX filters and three circulation pumps providing a turnover of less than three hours to optimise the usability. Alongside the pumps, Certikin provided three inverters to make them variable speed. Easy to install and programme, these inverters offer a potential cost saving payback of less than

six months. Finishing off the swimming pool are Certikin’s gleaming stainless steel Gibraltar Rails ladders which come with anti-slip treads as standard. Buckingham Pools offered a comprehensive QA package alongside its robust Design & Build methodology to ensure longevity and longterm assurance. Taking full responsibility for building the shell with shotcrete resulted in exacting tolerances required over and above traditional concrete construction methods to ensure the pool complies with all the necessary standards. Movable Floor Makes The Best Use Of Space At London Residence Behind the design and build of every private pool featuring a Twinscape movable floor is the client’s desire to make the best and most creative use of the space in their home. Clients paint a picture of how they want to use their space and Twinscape make their dream a reality. This award-winning pool was built for a family whose dream was to use just one area of its London residence for both swimming and entertaining; they wanted to use the same space for different functions at different times – swimming for the family and then transforming the pool area into a party space. They wanted an effective, easy-to-use

and aesthetically pleasing solution. A pool incorporating a Hydrofloors movable floor allows the homeowner to use the pool space for different purposes. When the movable floor is activated, it glides gently to the top of the pool and covers the water with a solid floor that blends seamlessly with the surrounding indoor flooring or outdoor terrace. There is also the safety benefit of the pool being sealed off when the movable floor is raised and secured at level deck. Twinscape Group 01473 938689 www.twinscapegroup.com

NEWS

IN BRIEF £13M RENOVATION OF HARROGATE’S HYDRO CENTRE TO START IN APRIL Plans for an extension and major upgrades at Harrogate’s Hydro swimming pool have been given the go-ahead. Works on the £13.5m project will start in April with wet leisure improvements expected to include refurbishment of the swimming pools area and changing facilities plus a new diving structure is scheduled to replace an existing one so that the centre can continue to create and nurture future Olympians, such as Jack Laugher and Oliver Dingley, who spent many years practicing at the venue. Simultaneously, the existing gas boilers will be replaced with heat pumps, along with the installation of solar panels as well as metering and energy monitoring and control systems. These energy efficiency measures come following a successful £2.4m bid from the borough council through the government’s Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) public sector decarbonisation scheme.

ACCESSIBILITY HOISTS INSTALLED IN NORTH WALES POOLS As part of a council’s ongoing commitment to accessibility new pool hoists have been installed at two locations in north Wales – Waterworld and Chirk leisure and activity centre. Cllr Beverley Parry Jones, Lead Member for Youth Services and Anti-Poverty and leisure Said: “It’s important to ensure that our leisure facilities have friction free access to anyone who wishes to use them.” Andy Harris, Regional Manager (Wales) at Freedom Leisure said: “We are delighted to bring two new pool hoists to our facilities at Waterworld and Chirk. This essential equipment creates an opportunity for any customers that have mobility issues to access our pools and enjoy the health and wellbeing benefits that swimming provides”

www.swimmingpoolnews.co.uk 8+11+13_SPN_February_2022_News_General.indd 13

“The challenging nature of the plant room meant that Waterco’s SMDT split tank filters provided the perfect solution,” explained Ted. “Ideal for retrofitting, they can be delivered in two parts and easily assembled on site in the plant room.” Along with fitting Waterco’s two Hydron SMDT1600 split tank filters and dual pressure gauge panels, Aqua Thermae UK – specialists in sports and hydrotherapy pools – also installed Waterco’s Glass Pearl filter media and two Hydrostar 7hp pumps. “It is important for us and our customers to know that we install products of the highest quality and that is what we get from Waterco along with the highest level of customer service and product support,” said Aqua Thermae Managing Director Richard Bishop. Thanks to Waterco’s innovations and proprietary methods, spinal trauma patients now have access to crystal clear hydrotherapy water and a pool that will be used for years to come. “The rehabilitation pool, in particular its water clarity, has never looked better,” added Richard.

Waterco’s SMDT Split Tank Filters Provided The Perfect Solution

Numerous clinical studies support the value of aquatic therapy as part of an intensive rehabilitation programme. So when the metal filters at Southport and Ormskirk Hospital NHS Trust’s rehabilitation pool began to fail, an urgent decision was made to upgrade the plant room. “The pool is a vital part of the rehabilitation process for many of the patients at Southport Hospital, so it was important that the plant room was refurbished with high-quality long-lasting filtration equipment,” said Facilities Department Estates Officer, Ted Williams. Limited access meant positioning the filters was extremely difficult and removing walls and doorways was not an option.

Rigo Spa Business Gets New Lease Of Life As Spa Design & Build After a two-year rollercoaster, Tom Coan, Owner and Managing Director of Rigo Spas has announced a rebranding and relaunch on the award-winning company. Now known as Spa Design & Build, the company has an 18,000sq.ft manufacturing facility producing pools, tiled spas, swim spas, saunas and many more bespoke leisure products. They manufacture for the pool trade and for builders/developers or private clients, both residentially and commercially. Changes to the business had been planned many months ago, following Tom buying out his 50-50 business partner in 2019, but then a few months later, COVID hit and everything changed. Explaining the company’s situation online, Tom posted “two live hotel projects both backed out of us delivering their spa facilities as they had to close. This took a substantial amount

of immediate cashflow away from my business with both being side by side installs, right at the start of COVID in 2020”. Further sites closing, staff illnesses, logistical and material issues also added to the businesses’ challenges, leading the entrepreneur to re-evaluate infrastructure, operations and almost guess at times what else would be put in the way to make business harder. Sadly, at the time, these didn’t include containers from China being upped in logistical cost by over 800% and the government adding taxes to hydrotherapy product imports! Thankfully, all of the company’s live projects and all trade clients in the UK and overseas have successfully novated over to the newly named business for 2022 and Tom and his team are more motivated than ever to move the business forward under the new name. Local Leisure Centre To Be Renamed After Olympic Diver Jack

PWTAG Conferences have always been popular and their virtual version was no different

PWTAG To Hold ‘Future For Pools’ Virtual Conference In March When the COVID pandemic eventually fades other challenges will remain for the pool industry. With that in mind, and following the great success of their first ever virtual conference in 2021, the Pool Water Treatment Advisory Group (PWTAG) have lined up their next digital offering. Taking place on 28 March 2022, the virtual conference will take a thorough look at the future and the many challenges that lay ahead. For example how energy conservation can be dealt with, what improvements can be made to water filtration and is there new information on disinfection bi-products and other contaminants in the water and to deal with them. There will be a selection of

invited and offered papers with plenty of time for discussion and asking the experts questions. The one-day conference will be of value to those who are involved in the day to day operation, management and design of pools in the leisure, holiday and health facilities including, pool technical operators, managers, environmental health officers, public health practitioners, aquatic physiotherapists and scientists and policy makers. Please keep an eye on the PWTAG website for more information and for registration details.

In honour of local Olympian Jack Laugher MBE, Ripon Leisure Centre is set to become the Jack Laugher Leisure and Wellness Centre. Born in Harrogate and educated at Ripon Grammar School, Jack became interested in diving during a visit to the Hydro in Harrogate and soon began to learn to dive through the Harrogate and District Diving Club. Laugher made history at the 2016 Rio Olympics by becoming the first-ever Olympic champion in diving for Great Britain, alongside 3m synchro partner Chris Mears, before following it up with an individual silver in the 3m springboard to make him the most successful British diver ever. Success has continued for Laugher; achieving three gold medals at the 2018 Commonwealth Games, a bronze and silver medal in the 3m individual and synchro springboard events respectively at the 2019 World Championships in Gwangju and a bronze medal in the 3m springboard at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Speaking about the honour, Jack said: “I’m truly honoured that Harrogate Borough Council have named the new facility in Ripon the Jack Laugher Leisure and Wellness Centre. “As a city I grew-up in and a district where I learned to swim and dive, I never in my wildest dreams imagined that I would have a facility named after me. I hope this new pool and the diving facilities in Harrogate encourage others to follow their dreams like I have.” The new six-lane 25 metre pool at the Jack Laugher Leisure and Wellness Centre offers 70% more water space compared to the ageing Ripon Spa Baths and has a wealth of improvements that come with modern, fit-for-purpose leisure facilities.

Industry Loses A Big Character With Passing Of Tim Bareham SPN were saddened to learn of the passing of Cresta Leisure founder Tim Bareham in late December. Tim set up the Dorset-based company in 1986 and joined SPATA the following year. The company was also a member of National Leisure and has built and cared for swimming pools throughout the West Country and beyond. A family run firm since its creation, Tim had handed over his position as Managing Director of Cresta to his son

14 February 2022 SPN 14_SPN_February_2022_People_News.indd 14

Simon approximately 3 years ago, but he was still keen to keep his mind active by helping within the business, where possible. In addition, he was also willing to give back a lot of time to the industry, especially to raise standards, and he was an active member of SPATA’s National Council, the

Technical Committee and a SPATA representative on the BSPF Board. As SPATA President in 2000-2001, he wanted to encourage more inspections of members and many years later was able to help Peter Lang and other inspectors share this workload of visiting and helping members to comply with

SPATA Standards. He was able to share his expertise on the revisions to SPATA’s Standards and had input with the revamping of the Commercial Contractor’s Register and the development of many member factsheets. Away from Cresta Leisure and the industry, his remaining time was spent with his wife, Anne or out on a golf course. Tim’s presence will be sorely missed by his peers across the wet leisure industry and our best wishes go to his family.

Popular Fi-Clor Range Re-branded To HTH

Since the start of the year, the Fi-Clor® brand of residential swimming pool and spa chemicals has changed and will know be found under the hth® brand. hth® has a strong global identity and the brand was first registered in 1928 in the US. It is very well known for calcium hypochlorite products and water treatment solutions. With more than 20 unique and innovative products, it is one of the leaders around the world for providing swimming pool and spa water treatment products. So why the change of brands? • To capitalise on the hth® strengths and strong positions in commercial pools in the UK and in the residential pool and spa markets in Europe. • To meet the very stringent demands of the BPR (Biocidal Products Regulation) registration and REACH (Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of chemicals) registration. Thus, ensuring hth® meets the legal legislation for the sale of swimming pool and spa products in the UK going forward. • To have a consistent marketing strategy across Europe and a strong dedicated brand to dealers. This will then enable the company to offer a higher degree of new innovative products to meet the ever-increasing demand for more effective, safer, easier to use and more ecological products. • To offer an improved level of technical and promotional support (literature/materials for dealer’s shops, websites etc.) and offer an improved level of product training. In the coming months, the UK distributor will be working with the industry to ensure that pool and spa users will be fully informed and confident in the conversion from the Fi-Clor to the hth® brand. RaeGuard™ Cover Material Features Innovative Technology Released last year, Plastipack’s RaeGuard™ is a covering material designed specifically to optimise heat retention. Energy and resource preservation has never been more vital to reduce running costs and minimise the environmental impact of running a pool. Few technologies offer more efficient and higher returns than simply covering the pool and with this in mind, Plastipack are making it their aim to ensure that every pool is covered. RaeGuard™ offers the affordability of a bubble cover while still providing 90% of the performance of a 5mm foam cover. Using Plastipack’s knowledge of light to matter interactions through the development of award-winning products like the patented EnergyGuard™ Selective Transmission cover, they have optimised the optical properties of RaeGuard™ to maximise heat retention and minimise heat losses by up to 57%. Offering typical payback times of less than a year, RaeGuard™

makes an attractive and effective solution to reducing a pool’s energy and resource consumption. The product’s unique properties work actively to reduce heat losses from a pool’s surface by up to 57%. The specially selected pigments of the silver and white layers are designed to reflect and scatter radiative heat, and maximise reflection in the targeted mid-infrared region. The unique GeoBubble™ air cell provides an insulating barrier which works to prevent the transfer of thermal energy away from the surface of a pool. Featuring the unique GeoBubble™ Technology air cell design and enhanced UV stabilisation, RaeGuard™ comes with a 6-year manufacturer’s warranty and a 6-year plus expected lifespan. It is also available with a reinforced woven top layer for enhanced longevity and durability. Plastipack Ltd 01424 851659 www.plastipack.co.uk

Rethink What A Pool Can Do With Hydrostride Want to tap into that cool, buoyant pool feeling loved by pool users in a completely new way? Available through Certikin, the Hydrostride underwater treadmill makes each and every step both gentler and more effective. Both water walking and water running lets users achieve all the benefits of dryland activity, but the aquatic version of these exercises offers added benefits. Less stress on joints, a full 360-degree span of resistance on muscles plus less day-after muscle soreness – meaning customers choose underwater treadmills for weight loss, cross-training, recovery, and rehabilitation. Adjusting from a 2.2 km/h water walk to a challenging 6.6 km/h water run, the

16 February 2022 SPN 16+20_SPN_February_2022_Prod+Eco_News.indd 16

Hydrostride lets pool owners enjoy the benefits of low-impact aquatic exercise from the convenience of home. In cases where slower walking pace is required, for example physiotherapy and rehabilitation, an additional oil cooler is required (EPFLHS/OC). When installed, the Hydrostride will be capable of speeds as low as 1.3km/h (0.81mph).

The Hydrostride is designed for installation in new pools or during major renovations. It can be installed on any flat surface where the pool floor and wall meet at, or close to, a 90-degree angle. The location can be tailored based on the customer’s height; Certikin recommend positioning the treadmill for approximately chest-deep water. As with its Fastlane Pro counter-current cousin, the Hydrostride can be upgraded with the addition of Fit@Home meaning that repeatable exercise regimes are possible. Add A Splash Of Colour Poolside With AstralPool’s New Chrome Showers

AstralPool has launched its new Chrome showers, which will fill any pool surround with colour and allow owners to be more environmentally friendly. Getting under the shower before swimming will prevent users from introducing impurities into the pool water, whilst doing so on getting out, looks after body and hair as this washes off the chemicals picked up in the water. What’s more, this can also help reduce the contrast between the outside temperature and the water temperature. In the latter case, AstralPool recommends its Solar Chrome shower. Its design is elegant, smart, simple and with an air of vintage about it. Its differentiating feature is the 30-litre tank that makes it possible to store water, which is heated by sunlight, so it is environmentally friendly and helps pool owners to save power. However, if colder water is preferred, the mixer tap can be used to regulate the temperature. Its body is made of a stainless steel tube and an aluminum framework (tank). The tube is available in two metallic colours – copper and stainless steel – and the framework around it can be anthracite or silver in colour. If the stainless steel tube is selected, it can also be combined with a coloured framework, which comes in blue, red, green and orange. It can very easily be installed in gardens by connecting a hose to an inlet found behind the shower. As far as maintenance is concerned, the tank is easy to empty in winter through a drainage pipe to prevent damage and wear. A non-solar option, with the same elegant, stylish design as the Chrome shower, as well as the foot washer tap and the rain effect showerhead is also available. All Pool Halls Deserve A Good Looking Wall-mounted Dehumidifier! For clients who have paid several thousand pounds to create their dream recreational space, it is always a bit depressing when they discover that this wonderful feature is self-destructing. The high moisture levels generated by the pool will slowly but surely eat away at the decorations and the fabric of the building. The warm, humid air will also condense on any glass walls or windows in the space. This can quite quickly become an expensive nightmare. What’s needed is a wall-mounted dehumidifier to look after the pool hall and to protect any investment. However, having

www.swimmingpoolnews.co.uk 19+21_SPN_February_2022_Prod+Eco_News.indd 19

designed such a beautiful environment it is a pity that most dehumidifiers are just so plain ugly and they become a necessary but unfortunate eyesore within the space. This is why the MeacoWall ultra quiet wallmounted dehumidifiers do so well. They are some of the most attractive dehumidifiers on the market and the best solution to the issue of a room dehumidifier for a swimming pool hall. The dehumidifiers

are white and each model is finished off on the front edge with a coloured glass plate in either white or black to provide a unique look never seen before in a dehumidifier. At just 202mm deep they also do not take up much space and will hopefully become either something that is not noticed or a piece of engineering design to be admired and complimented! Bespoke Pool Lift Fits The Bill At Newly Refurbished Swimming Complex

NIVEKO Overflow Evolution – Designed For Minimalists Bespoke pool manufacturer NIVEKO has long taken pride in its ability to meet the requirements of its customers. Each pool is custom made, thus reflecting the unique nature of the firm’s individual clients and bringing their ideas to life down to the finest detail. A pool is something that each customer buys to last for a long time, and satisfaction is therefore an absolutely crucial aspect. The NIVEKO Overflow Evolution is the very best choice for clients who prefer a tasteful, minimalist design. Featuring an overflow edge, which is a mere 20 mm, the actual surface area of the water is made to stand out beautifully, ensuring it is the dominant feature. The transition between the surface and the surroundings of the pool is almost invisible. Another advantage of the Evolution is that owners are not taking any risks – the design, which accentuates the water itself, will always tastefully enhance any garden. In addition, it can also be complemented by the company’s silent ‘Whisper’ overflow trough innovation. The Evolution pool is also the perfect choice when it comes to the wide range of optional accessories offered by NIVEKO. The recessed stainless steel built-in features of NIVEKO Plus or the exclusive Apollo steps are ideal for creating a stylish, uninterrupted impression too – the only limitations are the taste and imagination of each client!

The swimming complex at the well known Ponds Forge International Sports Centre in Sheffield has recently undergone an extensive refurbishment project to improve the leisure facilities at this prestigious venue, and Suntrap Systems were entrusted with the contract to supply a pool lift providing access for disabled users. The pool lift specified by the client was the fully automatic Scout Excel model with the request to have the stainless steel construction powder-coated to complement the new colour scheme within the pool area. The manufacturers of the lift – US-based Aqua Creek Products – were able to provide the necessary colour and powder-coating procedure to provide a unique and eye-catching finish to the lift, enhancing its appearance to match

the overall colour scheme within the updated pool hall. The installation by Suntrap was carried out early in December 2021 in accordance with the main contractor’s timetable. The company are proud to confirm this is the first pool lift ever to be fitted in the UK with a special colourway designed to complement site specification, and the automatic Scout Excel which comes with a 5-year structural warranty, is the only lift which matched the required specification. Whatever the challenge, the team at Suntrap Systems are happy to work with clients, specifiers and contractors to provide the best possible solutions for disabled pool access. The New Classic PLUS Multi-port Valve For Perfect Water All The Time New for the 2022 season, AstralPool has launched the Classic PLUS multi-port valve. The new design has six positions: filter, waste, closed, backwash, recirculate and rinse, which keeps the water in perfect condition at all times and ensures correct interaction between the pump, the filter and the pool basin. The new Classic PLUS combines design and technology enhancements which make it easier for both installers and owners to use, install and maintain. It is also compatible with previous models. The most notable improvements include: • Better energy efficiency due to reduced pressure loss (15%): Classic PLUS offers better flow thanks to the change in the

www.swimmingpoolnews.co.uk 19+21_SPN_February_2022_Prod+Eco_News.indd 21

elbow shape from 90° to curved. This new shape will result in less pressure loss in the system and therefore more energy efficiency for the owner. • Easier maintenance: on the newly designed Classic PLUS, the sealing gasket is located on the hood instead of on the body itself, which makes gasket replacement much easier, while also keeping dirt from building up in this area by making it easier to clean with

the normal flow of clean water. • Improved ergonomics achieved by repositioning the O-rings from the shaft to the valve cover, which reduces the possibility of the O-rings moving and creating friction. The result is smoother handle movement. The Classic PLUS is a great choice for a multi-port valve as it offers better performance, easier maintenance and the possibility of a longer valve life. Idrocrete KR1000 Reduces The Permeability Of Hardened Concrete

Waterco’s MC12 And MC16 MultiCyclones Receive An Upgrade

Mapei’s Idrocrete KR 1000 is a powder admixture made from special hydrophilic components which, when added to a concrete mix, has the capacity to reduce the permeability of hardened concrete. BBA Certified as part of the Mapei Idrocrete System (certificate 20/5754), Idrocrete KR 1000 can make concrete completely watertight thanks to a progressive process of crystallisation. The Idrocrete System is a proven technology which combines the use of a superplasticiser with Idrocrete KR 1000 to improve both the physical and mechanical properties of concrete to make impermeable structures – ideal for the construction of swimming pools and other concrete structures exposed to moisture, water salt or hydrostatic pressure water. It is also suitable for use in basements, docks, car parks, tunnels, liquid storage facilities, bridges, water reservoirs, and drainage channels. When water is added, Idrocrete KR 1000 is formulated to react with the calcium hydroxide and other products that form during the hydration process of the cement, forming compounds of calcium silicate and other non-soluble salts. This process provides a pore-blocking effect into the microcracks and capillaries, and as a result, creates an improved resistance to water penetration, even under pressure. Thanks to its resistance to water and aggressive environments, the life of concrete structures with Idrocrete KR 1000 are drastically improved, ensuring a long-lasting, durable finish. Mapei UK 0121 508 6970 www.mapei.co.uk

The Waterco MultiCyclone is a prefiltration device that is capable of saving water and reducing filter maintenance. It works based on centrifugal water filtration with no moving parts to wear and tear, and no filter media to clean or replace. Nonetheless, it is backed with a 2-year warranty. Incoming water enters the multiple hydro cyclones tangentially, generating a strong centrifugal effect. Sediment spirals down to the sediment sump, while filtered water flows up through the outlet. MultiCyclones collect 80% of the dirt that clogs a filter before it gets there. It drastically reduces backwashing and filter cartridge maintenance – yet it only takes 15 litres of water to flush the MultiCyclone. Though the MC16 model has been on the market for a while, the clever engineers at Waterco have taken this fantastic unit one step further and developed the MultiCyclone MC12 a vertically-mounted, all-in-one prefiltration system. An ultra-compact design, the MC12 includes all the features and benefits of centrifugal filtration as incorporated in the MC16 model. The difference is that the MC12 contains fewer cyclones, resulting in the unit being able to operate at lower flow rates while still being

able to remove sediment from the pond water. On top of that, an air release valve has now been incorporated into both the MC12 and MC16 MultiCyclones – this not only helps to expel any unwanted air within the system but also helps in cleaning out the sediment chamber. TylöHelo Is Changing Its Name To Sauna360 The Nordic company TylöHelo that houses some of the world’s finest sauna brands will be changing its name to Sauna360. The objective is to let the incorporated brands shine in their own identities and strengths, while Sauna360 plays a strategic and supporting role. In 2017, Swedish Tylö and Finnish Helo merged into TylöHelo, attempting to build a strong brand that would take over and carry the history, strengths and identities of established brands. In hindsight, unique values and strong market positions were lost with that strategy. Therefore, the owners announced recently that the name TylöHelo will cease to exist. Going forward, the company will be known as Sauna360, with

www.swimmingpoolnews.co.uk 24+27_SPN_February_2022_Wellness.indd 27

the intent to revitalise the strength of the well-known brands Tylö, Helo, Kastor, Finnleo and Amerec. The world of wellness is prospering, and the company is very optimistic about the future. With Sauna360 playing a strategic and supportive role, the incorporated brands

will represent unique values and together build a complete offer with traditional sauna, steam, and infrared warmth. The next steps for the company will be to create new web pages, initiate marketing activities and investigate new opportunities for growth and progress. Down the road, the company is aiming for an IPO (Initial Public Offering). Existing distributors and customers have been assured that this change will have no implications on existing contracts. Studio Apostoli Celebrates 25 Years Of Wellness Design The Verona-based studio founded by Alberto Apostoli, internationally renowned for its wellness and hospitality design projects, is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year. “Since 1997 I have been working in a niche sector in the world of design,” said Alberto Apostoli who, after collecting over 50 international awards, writing books and designing projects from China to the Americas, reaches a new stage in the history of his studio, reaching the 25-year milestone. The ‘niche sector’ is that of wellness, in which Studio Apostoli has worked as a multidisciplinary practise. In addition to architecture, interior design, engineering, project management and strategic marketing consultancy for the success of Spas, the studio has also driven the founding, researching and promoting of associations dedicated to new legislative or certification methods related to the sector. The studio has even had a hand in creating key industry and product design trends, obtaining patents and creating its own products, as was the case with ‘Sasha’, a Spa created for Jacuzzi in

2010 which remains an integral product for the American multinational, promoting wellness as a ‘widespread, democratic’ concept that is now also accessible in the private and domestic sphere. “A lot has changed in the last 25 years and the wellness world has experienced exponential growth that other sectors have not experienced to the same extent. Today, everyone is looking for wellness, and they’re looking for it everywhere; it wasn’t like that before − it’s become a lifestyle. When I approached this area, I found a blank slate on which I could build a great deal: first a philosophy, then projects and then products that would be able to meet specific needs or even anticipate them,” said Apostoli, who now has a diverse team of professionals in his studio, some of whom are from overseas to enable and manage seamless interaction with the diverse markets in which the studio operates. Social Responsibility At The Forefront Of NIVEKO’s Philosophy During the 25 years since it was first established NIVEKO has worked its way up to become a top manufacturer of swimming pools of the very highest standard. Its emphasis on the quality of its materials and craftsmanship, efficiency and precision manual work, as well as the social and environmental aspects of its business – these are all in line with the latest European standards. As the name NIVEKO implies – EKO (ECO) factors and social responsibility have been at the forefront of the company’s philosophy since the very beginning. All residual material left over from production is recycled and reused in other branches of industrial manufacturing. As the given material is of very high

quality it is easy to recycle it as regranulate, meaning it places no burden on the environment as waste, and can be reused for further processing. In 2021 NIVEKO started to support UNICEF, specifically its WASH programme. The main aim of this programme is to provide drinking water for people most in need in crisisafflicted regions. This also puts the requisite hygiene and sanitation conditions in place in affected areas, and, in addition to wells being built, in many cases children also receive an education. NIVEKO sees its support for WASH as an organic step, one that goes hand in hand with the development of the company and the associated potential to bring about positive change in the world.

POOL & SPA INDUSTRY

Happy New Year! After a much-needed festive break, in this first issue of 2022, BSPF Managing Director Chris Hayes highlights a number of subjects including SPATEX, awards events, workforce development and more!

D

espite the uncertainty over the past year, the industry is gearing up for a return to SPATEX being a physical show in the newly re-named Coventry Building Society Arena for a chance to meet and network again in person. The exhibitor list and seminar programme are looking very strong. The industry can be assured that we will follow any applicable government guidance to assist exhibitors and visitors coming to the Midlands. A huge thank you to Ross Alcock and his team at the ISPE for putting their workshop programme together. Thanks to other industry bodies such as PWTAG and the STA for their respective contributions to the SPATEX seminars. BISHTA and SPATA will also be giving the latest updates on workforce development and European standards. With SPATEX being a physical event, plans are in place to host the SPATEX Networking Party safely (on Wednesday 2 February) and also the Industry Gala Evening (on Tuesday 1 February) to announce the winners of the 2022 British Pool & Hot Tub Awards and the 2021 ISPE Awards’ re-presentation. The evening will acknowledge the BISHTA and SPATA members winning these awards (and a number of these companies will become eligible to be entered into the 2022 European Pool and Spa Awards, organised by EUSA). Our thanks to all of the award sponsors this year for their support of the event, and their logos appear below. Talking of the EUSA Awards, congratulations to XL Pools for their Gold

award in the recent European Pool and Spa Awards for 2021. The 2022 entries shortlisted for the UK will be prepared by Easter, and this year’s winners are to be announced at Piscine Global Europe in Lyon in November. For more information on the 2021 EUSA Awards, please see page 38. Congratulations to our Spanish colleagues too for their organisation of the fifth meeting of the World Alliance of Pool and Spa Associations (WAPSA), which took place in Barcelona in late November. Along with a small working group of countries from Australia, Brazil, France, Germany, Mexico, the UK and the USA, they have been planning for the event with online meetings throughout the past year. Due to the uncertainty of foreign travel when the meeting was planned, some countries chose to attend the meeting online rather than in-person, which added to Agusti Ferrer’s workload (as the Managing Director of the Spanish pool association – ASOFAP). Plans are underway for hosting the 6th meeting, which will be in Lyon. The primary outcomes from the WAPSA meeting are around workforce development, market data, environmental sustainability, and comparisons for how each country organises their Association to help its members. Each of the topics discussed at WAPSA helps the UK review how it deals with these topics at home. Regarding workforce development, there have been many training courses, including some qualifications in subjects such as electrical final connections to hot tubs, water hygiene management, Dangerous Goods, CHTT and heat pumps. Subject to attendee demand (and COVID permitting), plans are in place for a number of these courses to be rolled out again in the coming year, along with courses in hot tub lifting, liners, plus environmental control and ductwork. The industry is fast becoming very aware of the need to further enhance

its professionalism (which will continue to separate the good companies from those with little interest in undertaking the work safely and to the industry standards). These workforce development opportunities provide for continuing (or continuous) professional development (CPD). Training and support have also continued to be provided by a number of our friends, including the Hampshire County Council Trading Standards team, who provide beneficial information on the Consumer Rights Act, and Distance Selling Regulations (a huge thank you to Adam Chambers and Laura Haydock for their expertise). The industry also benefits from the guidance on insurance provided by Nsure (Phil Bristow, Keith Bull and Stewart Murray) and legal matters through Wright Hassall LLP (especially Philip Harris and Paul Slinger). Readers may also be interested to know that there is a government consultation on what further chemicals (and their strength) if any, should be included in legislation to reduce the likelihood of terrorists getting access to materials for bomb-making devices. Please contact the BISHTA / SPATA office to express an interest in being part of their consultation. Finally, there is an article on the many benefits of trade association membership on the following pages (34-35).

POOL & SPA INDUSTRY

What Are The Benefits Of Joining A Trade Association?

In this issue, Chris Hayes, BISHTA and SPATA Managing Director, explains how trade association membership can support you, your staff and your business!

WHAT’S THE POINT OF TRADE ASSOCIATIONS? In basic terms, they provide helpful products and services to businesses or tradespeople in exchange for a subscription fee. They also act as a collective voice for those businesses and individuals, typically in a specific sector or industry. But what does all that mean for our industry? The role of BISHTA and SPATA is to help members to be able to focus on managing their day-to-day business arrangements when there are so many potential distractions that can get in the way! In addition to this, the strength of the trade association bodies in the industry means that it has many more opportunities for dialogue with the government, local authorities, other industries, trade bodies and organisations. This can be a great support to members, as well as having access to a vast range of benefits that come from joining a trade association. Having been in existence for 60 years, SPATA (and its forerunner – The Association of Swimming Pool Contractors) has been working on behalf of the pool industry and setting standards. Similarly, BISHTA has been operating for the last 20 years in the hot tub industry, working with public health agencies, the Health & Safety Executive, Trading Standards, Environmental Health Officers, The IET and a range of other key bodies.

BUILDING TRUST The industry set up BISHTA and SPATA as not-for-profit organisations. Both trade associations are represented by members who voluntarily work on the various committees, shaping different areas of the association’s work. The two trade associations are members of the BSPF (British Swimming Pool Federation), which brings together the UK bodies representing contractors, manufacturers, distributors,

recognised industry standards and abide by the Code of Ethics.

NETWORKING

importers and retailers of swimming pools, spas, hot tubs, saunas, steam rooms and associated equipment. The BSPF is also the sole shareholder of SPATEX (the annual trade exhibition) and PIP (Pool Industry Promotions). PIP is responsible for promoting the swimming pool and hot tub industry, both within the trade and, more importantly, to the end-user / consumer.

GENERATING LEADS

TRAINING AND EDUCATION

Both BISHTA and SPATA have invested considerably into their websites as consumerfacing platforms. These serve as a place for consumers to get design inspiration from the British Pool & Hot Tub Awards winners, with winning companies listed on each of their images with the awards they have won. Visitors can find their nearest members with the easy search map on the ‘Where to Buy’ page, where they can click on the map pins to open up the contact details of each member (with URL clickable links to each member website). Free BISHTA and SPATA factsheets and owners’ guides can be viewed online and downloaded. They can also find the latest Q&As and news about the industry, so the consumers can access everything they need in one easy to navigate website. Helping to drive consumers to a trusted source of information, they can also purchase goods and services from members who work to

Continuing (or continuous) professional development (CPD) is crucial in getting to (and staying at) the top of any industry. If your company is already a leader in the field, education is a key to remaining ahead. This is especially true in an industry such as ours that involves high levels of expertise and skills sets. And with the fast-paced development of technology used in much of our jobs and the products we use and sell, it is essential to stay ahead of the pack. BISHTA and SPATA regularly hold or support events, seminars, workshops and training classes that help members learn and grow in their profession. Even outside of these official events, members can access third party training courses to gain knowledge and share experience.

This is the most common and obvious benefit of joining a trade association. A trade association is filled with potential contacts, clients and partners who can help your business move to the next level and become more prominent. Trade associations can give opportunities to contact fellow members, share information, or seek feedback. The more active you are, the more you will see opportunities to build long-term relationships and partnerships which are mutually beneficial, so why not get involved? Business never comes to those that stand still or hide. The trade association provides a trusted environment where like-minded individuals can come together to share ideas, strengthen ties, collaborate and make connections.

INFLUENCE One of the key benefits of joining any trade association is supporting the organisation’s mission and possibly influencing legislation / policy that affects the sector. The combined resources of the members of an association are often used to lobby policymakers and sway public opinion more positively towards the association’s goals than any one organisation can hope to achieve, irrespective of its size. With an increased level of government regulation in many industries, this is an effective way for our industry to achieve its aims.

POOL & SPA INDUSTRY INSIGHT Membership in a trade association means immediate access to news or developments that affect your business and the sector as a whole. A trade association allows you to find information and distribute your own company’s news. Outside of the regular communication of members, trade associations also provide newsletters, email updates and informative resources that help members stay on top of recent developments.

Open to BISHTA and SPATA members, the annual British Pool and Hot Tub Awards provides great publicity and for any companies that are selected for an Award, they are an acknowledgement and endorsement by the relevant trade association

BEST PRACTICE, STANDARDS AND BENCHMARKING Any line of work has a specific set of Best Practices / Standards which are deemed essential to ensure efficiency, repeatable quality, consistent service delivery or consumer confidence, especially for anyone new to the industry. Membership in a trade association is vital to learning these practices and performing the best work possible. The fast pace of technology and market competition means that these practices are constantly updating and changing. It is crucial to take advantage of any practices to improve your business. BISHTA and SPATA are proud of their respective roles in developing not only national standards but also European standards too.

SAFEGUARDING YOUR MONEY Most businesses will, at some point, have a client that will be concerned about making a large payment in advance for goods that need ordering and so will try and withhold the payment until the goods arrive. However, many businesses will not want to make an order in case the client is unable or unwilling to pay once the goods arrive. To avoid this situation escalating, it is reassuring for members to have a free UK service available called the ‘Stakeholder Account’. This service can be used to help your client pay any monies into a ring-fenced client account, that as the business owner, you know will be paid to you when you have completed the work as per the signed agreement with your client.

SUPPORTING MEMBERS WITH TECHNICAL ADVICE BISHTA and SPATA take pride in the associations’ technical advice that is on offer. Members can tap into a range of resource materials hosted on the Members’ Hub of the BISHTA and SPATA websites, making them available 24-7 on desktops and mobile devices. BISHTA and SPATA also have dedicated Technical Committees who set and review British and European standards and guidelines, establishing the benchmarks for the relevant hot tub and swimming pool industries. In addition to the vast knowledge from the Technical Committees, the respective websites have member benefits sections within each Members’ Hub, with a large amount of information available free of charge.

Strategic alliances – such as BISHTA working with the Construction Plant-hire Association (CPA) and the Association of Lorry Loader Manufacturers and Importers (ALLMI) – provide members with valuable insight and further collaborative opportunities

Networking is the most common and obvious benefit of membership. The trade association provides a trusted environment where likeminded individuals can come together to share ideas, strengthen ties, collaborate and make connections – even during a pandemic!

EXCHANGE OF IDEAS Members have access to information about updates in the sector; they can also play a significant role in determining these changes. Trade associations provide a forum for individuals to share ideas and develop new ways to improve the industry by creating committees, working groups, regional and national networking events. Access is open to all members. This allows more experienced members to help newer ones grow and allows all members to share innovative ideas to help the whole sector.

PARTNERSHIPS Aside from all of the professional benefits available through trade associations, they also provide an opportunity for members to connect to other organisations. Trade associations tend to be very well connected and often work together on joint initiatives with other trade bodies directly or indirectly related to their specific area of focus. These strategic alliances provide members with valuable insight and further collaborative opportunities. An example of this in practice is BISHTA working with the Construction Plant-hire Association (CPA) and the Association of Lorry Loader Manufacturers and Importers (ALLMI) to develop guidance on lifting hot tubs and pools.

PROMOTING YOUR SUCCESSES Winning an industry award will always be good for business, especially if presented to

your business from your trade association. The British Pool and Hot Tub Awards provide great publicity and an endorsement of your company, and it can have an impressive impact on your turnover. But it’s what you do with awards that makes the real difference to your turnover. If you can maximise the use of your PR and marketing channels after winning your award, you could see some fantastic results. These are just some of the main benefits of BISHTA and SPATA membership; there are many others specific to either the pool or hot tub sectors. But whether you are working in either of these industries (or both), trade association membership provides many advantages in a fast-paced, competitive world. If you are interested in finding out more about the benefits of membership and joining, please visit either associations’ website and click on the ‘Trade’ button. Having established their positions as industry leads over many years, BISHTA and SPATA will continue to represent the interests of our members at home and abroad and will provide a strong and effective voice for the wet leisure industry. STA POOL PLANT – PH & ACTIVE FREE CHLORINE

pH In The Disinfection Process And An Introduction To Active Free Chlorine In the December issue of SPN, Luke Griffiths, STA’s Pool Plant Qualification Development Manager looked at the importance of pH to swimming pool water in general. In a follow-up to that piece, in this issue he provides an introduction to active free chlorine and focuses on the impact pH has on the effectiveness of it

I

n the pH range found in swimming pools, free chlorine is made up of two forms of chlorine which co-exist: • Hypochlorous acid (a very effective disinfectant) • Hypochlorite ion (a very weak disinfectant). The relative proportions of hypochlorous acid and hypochlorite ions are dictated by the pH level. As can be seen in the table below, at pH 7.0 approximately 80% of the free chlorine is in the form of hypochlorous acid, whereas at a pH of 8.0 this drops to around 20%. As you can see from the graph to the right, the nearer the pH is to 7.0 the more chlorine is in the form of hypochlorous acid and more effective the chlorine is as a disinfectant. As the pH rises the less effective hypochlorous acid becomes.

ACTIVE FREE CHLORINE Active free chlorine refers to the hypochlorous acid part of the free chlorine, which, as discussed, is an extremely effective disinfectant. At concentrations above 0.5mg/l active free chlorine is effective as a biocide in killing most microorganisms. The table below, adapted from PWTAG’s TN60 provides the free chlorine levels in yellow, the pH levels in orange and the corresponding active free chlorine figures in white. So, for example – a water sample with a pH result of 7.2 and a free chlorine result of 1.4mg/l indicates an active free chlorine level of 0.95mg/l.

WHAT THIS MEANS FOR SWIMMING POOLS, SPAS AND INTERACTIVE WATER FEATURES For chlorine efficiency PWTAG recommend a pH value in swimming pools of between 7.0 and 7.4 to be the range when using chlorinebased disinfectants and ideally 7.0 to 7.2 for a better disinfectant effect. For swimming pools unable to maintain pH levels between 7.0 to 7.2, the upper range of 7.2 to 7.4 should be supplemented by increasing the level of free chlorine to 2.0mg/l to provide sufficient active free chlorine to neutralise most bacteria. For spas and interactive water features maintaining pH values between 7.0 and 7.6 is acceptable. pH in spas and interactive water features can elevate due to aeration and agitation which can cause an increase in pH as CO2 escapes − hence the wider margin. But we must ensure the free chlorine concentration is sufficient to provide an adequate level of active free chlorine concentration. Particularly as these systems are more susceptible to

microbiological issues such as Legionella, Pseudomonas, Coli forms and Biofilms – partly due to the relatively high pollution from the high ratio of bathers to low water volume. This, combined with the higher temperatures in which spas are operated and the potential of higher temperatures for interactive water features, is a combination which makes it essential there is sufficient active free chlorine. To conclude, whether it be a swimming pool, spa or interactive water feature it is imperative pH and free chlorine levels are maintained within the recommended parameters and considered collectively to ensure there is sufficient active free chlorine to control microorganisms within the water. STA 01922 645097 www.sta.co.uk

STA’S LEVEL 3 AWARD IN POOL PLANT OPERATIONS QUALIFICATION CIMSPA professionally endorsed, STA’s Level 3 Award in Pool Plant Operations qualification covers everything operators need to know to ensure safe, clear and hygienic water practices are adhered to in pools, spas and interactive water features. For more information on the qualification visit the STA website or you can contact Luke direct on 01922 645097 or by email at luke.griffiths@safetytrainingawards.co.uk for further details and advice.

PLASTICA’S 50TH ANNIVERSARY

UK Manufacturing Remains The Focus As Plastica Celebrates Their 50th Year Of Trading 2021 was an extraordinary year for business worldwide, but for UK wet leisure manufacturer and distributor Plastica, 2022 is even more special as it marks the company’s 50th anniversary. Their British-made pool liners, covers, stainless steel reel systems, water treatment products and pumps remain core to the business both this year and far beyond!

L

ocated on a 6-acre site in St Leonard’s in East Sussex, Plastica – one of Britain’s leading independent manufacturers and providers of swimming pools and accessories – operates from a 13,000 square metre factory which is home to almost 80 staff that focus on manufacturing and exceptional customer service. Products are created using an impressive combination of state-of-the-art equipment and skilled staff crafting handmade parts. Their manufacturing facility produces wooden pools, a range of solar, heat retention and winter debris covers, reels, pool liners, the Relax brand of water treatments for pools and spas, in-house ABS pipework plus stainless steel and bespoke parts, such as ladders and handrails. The business has continuously evolved since its inception in 1972 by boyhood friends and co-founders, Edward Campbell-Salmon and Peter Adlington. The initial business manufactured winter debris covers from a rundown workroom in London. After three years they moved to larger premises in Hastings, East Sussex. Their entrepreneurial skills soon grew the business to produce heat retaining covers in 1974 after the oil crisis and pool liners during the hot summer of 1976. This was soon followed by solar covers and reel systems.

In subsequent years more pool equipment was added to their range including filters, pumps, heating, maintenance products, wooden and above-ground pools and water treatment products. Some of these products are sourced from different manufacturers from around the globe and many are produced in-house which is generally their preference so they can control the quality. Like many businesses in the wet leisure industry, Plastica found demand increased during the global COVID pandemic. With the substantial increase in both inflatable and acrylic hot tubs, growth has been particularly apparent in the company’s water treatment department. Last September the expansion into a nearby 13,000 square metre premises provided more storage space and room for an automated filling and capping machine. This has enabled Plastica to streamline their growing orders which are handled by an experienced team of water treatment staff. Overall, the need for top quality products,

packaged here in the UK by an established and experienced business will continue and the company are well placed to ride the wave of success. A great deal of time and effort goes into the design of their water treatment labelling, particularly the eye-catching Relax Spa range. Launched in 2017, it includes easy to follow instructions, useful dosing charts and quick reference pictograms. It makes an attractive addition to any spa showroom and has had great feedback from their dealers. Another area of increased sales was and continues to be above-ground wooden pools and a decision was made to extend the timber department. Manufacturing during such unprecedented times has been difficult over the last year, but Plastica rose to the challenge. Some of their raw materials are imported and have been affected by global supply chains. Higher costs on imports have been exacerbated by a global pandemic and a no deal Brexit. Lead times continue to be fluid to accommodate this disruption and monitored weekly by their production team to keep customers in the loop. This is a universal issue for many UK businesses which over time will settle down. It may have slowed down production but hasn’t stopped Plastica’s manufacturing process and growth.

POOL CLEANERS

Keeping It Clean In 2022 Innovative manual and in particular robotic pool cleaners have ensured that the monotonous but essential task of cleaning the surfaces within a wide variety of swimming pools is thankfully no longer the chore it once was. And as each year passes, the introduction of new and updated models ensure it’s a job that is becoming even easier to perform. With a new year ahead, we look at 10 models to keep pools clean in 2022 By Jon Wadeson THE ‘BIG YELLOW ONE’ FROM FAIRLOCKS The ‘big yellow one’ from Fairlocks has been a top seller in Europe for over 30 years and is ideal for both

domestic and commercial pools. The streamlined shape enables faster sweeping and the centrally mounted 19” brush even enables solid debris to enter the suction stream. Due to its rigid tough polycarbonate construction, it is ideal for pools with 1/2 hp pumps or more and is available with both 1.5 inch and 2 inch hose fittings. A new multi-fit handle enables a rapid change from one implement to another and a metal yoke is available that mounts two Fairlocks side by side. The Double Fairlocks is over 3 feet wide and on a flow rate of over 40 gallons per minute can clean one square yard per second.

KOKIDO VEKTRO AUTO POOL CLEANER FROM SCP UK

The lightweight and portable Pool Blaster Catfish vacuum is suitable for any type of pool or spa, providing outstanding suction and cleaning power without the need for messy hoses or additional pumps. It can be used by hand, or attached to a standard telescopic pole, and can manoeuvre into the tightest of corners and crevices. The rechargeable Pool Blaster Catfish is battery operated and has a run time of up to 45 minutes continuous use for efficient, effective cleaning. The vacuum compacts leaves, sand, dirt and other debris into a reusable filter bag that can be easily emptied, making pool maintenance simple and hassle-free. Once out, an easy-to-clean stainless steel filter helps to make maintenance a breeze.

SHOW PREVIEW

Coventry’s Calling As SPATEX Returns By Jon Wadeson

The industry’s annual show returns to the newly renamed Coventry Building Society Arena and its organisers are pulling out all the stops to make it event to remember. More than just an exhibition, SPATEX is also the UK’s largest networking opportunity for the pool and spa trade. We cover all the news from both the organisers and exhibitors, highlight various products that can be seen, plus take look at the educational opportunities By Jon Wadeson

A

fter a pandemic enforced postponement last year which resulted in a digital exhibition, SPATEX returns to the West Midlands from 1 to 3 February to the newly renamed Coventry Building Society Arena. It’s The Big Reunion for many – and will be a chance to celebrate bringing the industry together for the first time in two years plus it’s SPATEX’s 25th silver anniversary too! Despite all the challenges over recent months, the event’s organisers have advised that this is SPATEX’s biggest show to date in terms of exhibition space sold, so the annual event has clearly been missed by the industry! It’s no surprise really as many exhibitors requested larger stands to showcase two years’ worth of products to and industry that has been flying throughout the pandemic. With over 100 participating companies in total and 16 brand new exhibitors, this year’s event features a truly international line-up with exhibitors drawn from ten countries. With this being the first opportunity in 2022 to see a bumper crop of new products – in fact the first opportunity to see a number of wet leisure products up close for some time in the UK – visitors should expect a healthy amount innovation to be on show this year across the various sectors that the show covers. Of course, anyone who has been to a SPATEX over recent years will know that it is

www.swimmingpoolnews.co.uk 47-60_SPN_Feb_22_SPATEX.indd 47

far from being just a swimming pool show but to reiterate just how much diversity there is, and how hard the team has worked to create as broad an offering as possible, there are 40 spa-associated companies present too – which is pretty impressive and reflects the popularity of what has been a booming hot tub sector over recent years. “In our 25-year history of staging the UK water leisure industry’s live show, this 2022 event is the most unmissable,” said Michele. “Not only because it is our single biggest showcase to date but because reuniting together under one roof helps draw a line under all that has been and builds a solid foundation to move forward together with optimism and great expectation.” Since moving to the Midlands, the three-day event had, until the arrival of COVID, firmly cemented its place on the exhibition calendar and as far as wet leisure is concerned in the UK, it is now the only event that truly covers the full spectrum of products, making it a must-attend event for anyone involved with the industry – especially this year following such a lengthy break. SPATEX will again play host to two seminar arenas, with free to attend workshops taking place in each across all three days. Visitors can expect to find 45 new talks in total across the two Arenas. All workshops hosted by the Institute of Swimming Pool Engineers (ISPE) in Arena 1

award Continuous Professional Development (CPD) points plus a Certificate of Attendance – a valuable record of the courses that have been attended. In Arena 2, a variety of experts will be imparting their knowledge across a wide range of subjects with the Thursday being a dedicated Pool Water Treatment Advisory Group (PWTAG) day. The STA (Swimming Teachers’ Association) is holding a Pool Plant Conference on the Tuesday in Seminar Arena 2 from 10.15 – 13.30. The LCA (Legionella Control Association) will be holding a seminar on Thursday from 13.45 – 14.15 in Arena 1. We’ve a full list of all the workshops and seminars in this feature and more information is available for each on the SPATEX website. Naturally, the show’s organising team have said that the safety of visitors and exhibitors is paramount so please rest assured that it will be a COVID-safe environment, fully compliant with the latest Government advice and regulations. Without a stand this year, the SPN team will be amongst what we hope will be numerous visitors to the event this year and we’ve plenty of products for people to see! A full and up-to-date list of all the exhibitors can be found on the SPATEX website (www. spatex.co.uk) along with lots of other useful information regarding the show which is

Cranbourne Stone, one of the leaders in swimming pool surrounds and landscapes, is preparing to exhibit its extensive portfolio for the 17th year at SPATEX. For over 18 years, Cranbourne Stone has developed close relationships with the world’s leading suppliers of natural stone and slipresistant porcelain. This allows the company to offer the very finest products, selecting only the best materials for its customers. In July 2021, the well-established family-run business decided to become a trade only supplier. The move has enabled Cranbourne to spend more time with the pool and spa builders and allowed them to process quotes and orders more quickly. It also ensures the company is not cross selling by mistake and their great trade discounts are kept strictly to the trade and away from any end clients. With a wealth of knowledge of pool design and installation, unlike other stone suppliers, Cranbourne are able to talk in detail with pool builders to help create cost saving solutions for even the most complex projects. For bespoke projects, the company’s digital template service is available, and using years of experience from being on site, they are able create perfect fitting copings for any free-form shaped pool. With new products on display at SPATEX and in the pipeline too, Cranbourne Stone is looking forward to presenting its latest range at the three-day exhibition. See them on stand A13

The company are pleased to be able to return to the Coventry event which is venue where three years ago, they launched the Sanistream Sanitisation System which has revolutionised how consumers now sanitise their hot tubs. No longer having to use the ancient, ineffective and dangerous to children floating dispenser, this system has also been sanctioned to give HSG282 compliance for Holiday Parks in ensuring inline sanitisation using either Darlly’s own blue SpaPod or CPC’s yellow Aquasparkle Bromine Pod.

This alone has completely changed how the end-user ensures the cleanliness and sterilisation of their hot tub. The process is quicker, more efficient, safer and more cost effective. See them on stand H17

RECOTHERM OFFER A BREATHE OF FRESH AIR IN COVENTRY Redditch-based Recotherm, the fresh air specialists, are returning to SPATEX 2022 with an exciting and innovative solution to the 2025 regulations. Heating without boilers, a full fresh air dehumidification package with air to air renewable heating plus cooling too… say hello to the Aerum. With the Recotherm Aerum range, purchasers will get all the features normally

associated with the Recotherm Aeris range; high build quality, state of the art controls, pleasant fresh air environment in the pool hall and technical backup, but with the added advantage that the unit is a standalone package that doesn’t require connection to a boiler and can also provide a significant amount of cooling in the summer (if this is required). This has been achieved by installing the refrigerate coil into the unit instead of a water coil, therefore directly heating or cooling the air using the energy from the refrigerate process, and as a consequence making it more efficient. To help customers make the correct choice of system, Recotherm have qualified, time served surveyors, designers and f-gas engineers in house. Visitors to SPATEX will be able to view the new Aerum as well as the popular Aeris range and also Recotherm’s new potentially Covid-Safe Filter. See them on stand C50

HOT TUBS

2022 Hot Tubs – The New Season

Since the pandemic, hot tubs have been a real success story in the UK and for many involved in the sector, 2021 was another amazing year. With demand across both domestic and commercial markets still strong, manufacturers and distributors are always looking to stay one step ahead rival brands and a new season brings new opportunities. In this edition, we look at what’s new in this busy and competitive sector By Jon Wadeson

W

hether purchased as a replacement for the missed family holiday or for their hydrotherapy benefits during what have been recent stressful times, hot tubs and spas in their various forms became one of the ‘must-have’ products throughout the pandemic, and the early signs for 2022 are still looking promising, although demand is unlikely to match the unprecedented levels of the last two years. Despite the hectic times for the sector, there’s plenty of changes still taking place, albeit I would suggest at a slightly slower pace than pre-pandemic. Whether it’s the introduction of new ranges, enhancing existing models or incorporating new technologies – or the fact that distributors are introducing new brands to the UK – there’s plenty going on as the spa and hot tub trade readies itself for the year ahead. So what’s new for this season? Well we round up just some of what’s on offer in this constantly evolving sector.

Aquavia Spa’s beautiful Aurora cabinet is an innovative, sensory and sustainable innovation

62 February 2022 SPN 62-64_SPN_February_2022_Hot_Tubs.indd 62

AURORA - A STUNNING NEW CABINET FROM AQUAVIA SPA Aquavia Spa has launched its latest creation for 2022 – the beautiful Aurora cabinet – an innovative, sensory and sustainable innovation. With this new look, Aquavia’s experience starts from the outside, with a unique cabinet that awakens all the senses. Aurora offers a complete experience from the first contact – its soft and gentle touch instantly triggers a feeling of wellbeing, inviting users to immerse themselves in the water. The idea behind the new design is that Aquavia wanted to transport owners closer to the water through the infinite curved lines of its design. Aurora is a spa cabinet that mirrors the waves of the sea, in order to let people flow into the spa and experience infinite pleasure without leaving their own home. The stunning new Aurora cabinet is the result of investing several months of work in research, development and innovation.

Mimicking the impact of our spas on the environment, thanks to its eco-friendly technology, the Aurora achieves that and has been produced using a polyurethane foam material that respects nature. An organic design is something that truly values the importance of water as the central element of any hot tub experience. For the Aurora cabinet, Aquavia Spa have relied on ‘Triple S Technology’ (safe, soft and strong) as the company believe that each piece of their spas deserves special treatment. The result is this new cabinet concept based on a soft, compact design suitable for both outdoor and indoor installations. In summary, ecological, waterproof, thermal, resistant, antibacterial... these are just some of the characteristics of the Aurora cabinet.

UV SYSTEMS

Ultraviolet And Ultra Effective

When it comes to the effective treatment of water in pools and other wet leisure environments, UV Systems are now an established choice, particularly in \ commercial settings. Their success is no real surprise when you consider UV’s many benefits, but their big selling point is a large reduction in the use of chlorine as a sanitiser. As more pools make the switch to UV, there’s plenty of product choices to consider we take a look at the options By Jon Wadeson

U

ltraviolet light, or UV light as it’s most commonly shortened to, is an extremely effective disinfectant – and why wouldn’t it be, it’s effectively a form of radiation – but so too is the light from the sun, so it’s not time to panic just yet! UV’s power lay in its ability to inactivate bacteria, viruses and other pathogens that can exist in various wet leisure settings, including the Cryptosporidium and Giardia variants which are able to survive in water despite the presence of a variety of sanitisers (and that includes our reliable friend chlorine). In addition to its biocide action, UV has a powerful oxidising effect which successfully removes organic pollution from swimming pool and spa water, so when UV is used in conjunction with chlorine, the chloramines that cause eye and skin irritation are turned into easily removed by-products. Although effective, UV is still a secondary disinfection process that is used alongside, treatments such as chlorine as the principal disinfectant in pools and spas. The reason for this is that UV only treats water as it passes through the lamp, therefore a sanitiser such as chlorine is needed to provide a constant defence throughout the rest of the water system. Through the use of UV, it is possible to drastically reduce sanitiser levels by as much as 80% and down to as little as 0.5ppm. In addition to requiring less chemicals, water treated with a UV system will also require less backwashing and heating costs will be improved too – and that could be an extremely important factor now energy costs are spiralling! So in summary, the water within a UV treated pool or spa uses less chemicals, requires less backwashing and both water and heating costs are reduced, however chlorine use, whilst minimised, still plays an essential role in providing the safest possible water. With numerous benefits, it’s no wonder that UV has become a popular choice and

there are plenty of options available to choose from for both commercial, and increasing residential sectors too. In this latest issue, we shine a light on just some of the ultra effective options that are making water safer through the power of UV.

MAKE LIGHT WORK OF WATER DISINFECTION WITH BIO-UV If a more natural disinfection system sounds appealing for your commercial or domestic pool, Golden Coast offers a range of UV water treatment systems. Adam Clark, Sales Director at Golden Coast explained: “Though effective, chemicalbased water disinfection systems such as chlorine can cause skin and eye irritation due to by-products remaining in the air, UV creates a much more pleasant pool environment for swimmers, allowing for a reduced reliance on chemical processes while still ensuring the water is safe and clean. “Instead of adding anything to the water, UV systems treat the water directly during filtration. H.R.UV-C one is of newest members to the Elecro family of sanitisers and is now available from Certikin too. Designed using the latest knowledge of highly reflective reactor casing materials, the H.R.UV-C features the highest UV reflective index on the market thus optimising the UV-C radiation and dramatically increasing its performance. This is achieved thanks to the E-PTFE reach chamber which is extremely repellent, maintaining UV reflectivity. Up to 95% reflection amplifies the exposure of microorganisms to UV. It’s win, win as no harmful gases or by-products are produced in the process and the powerful sterilisation eliminates the smell of chlorine. It is highly effective in neutralising bacteria, viruses, algae and fungi that traditional chemicals cannot. The inside surface casing is extremely repellent and therefore self-cleaning. Intelligent electronics indicate when the lamps are not producing sufficient UV-C and

need to be changed, ensuring the unit is always performing optimally. The H.R.UV-C is compatible with and complements all traditional treatment methods including; chlorine, bromine, active oxygen / hydrogen peroxide and salt electrolysis. A narrow and extended chamber ensures maximum exposure to the powerful UV-C. It is easy to use and install, can be retro fitted to any existing pool system – a self-cleaning system, reducing the need for maintenance. The intelligent lamp life indicator signals when the lamps are no longer producing sufficient UV-C and need to be changed, ensuring the unit is always performing optimally and has a long lamp life, up to 9,000 hours. The H.R.UV-C is available in three sizes: Mini (30m³), Single (55m³) and Double (110m³) and in three models − Standard, Classic and Pro.

UV SYSTEMS in the pool water emits a very powerful UV-C light with a wavelength of exactly 253.7nm that kills practically all bacteria, viruses, algae and moulds. Using a UV light provides non-chemical disinfection, enabling effective primary control over waterborne bacteria, which can benefit both public and private pools. This results in optimal purification, reducing the need by 80% of chlorine and other chemical usage. The PURIQ UV-C system, with its 100% eco-friendly operation, provides more natural, healthier water. The extra wide SAE 316 stainless steel housing extends the time the water is exposed to the strong UV-C radiation while also minimising the pressure drop as the water passes through. Not only is the system better for the pool and pool user, but the environment benefits too. There is a significantly reduced number of toxic by-products produced by the UV purifier ensuring that the end response is a cleaner, safer environment for all. Thanks to the polished interior, there is virtually no adhesion of contaminants to the walls, which boosts the effectiveness of the UV-C radiation by a further 35%. The PURIQ UV-C water purifier contains intelligent electronics that signals an alert when it is time to replace the lamp, which ensures that the unit is always operating at peak efficiency and the water is clear. This way, the customer always has a perfectly working device they can rely on.

temperature control and automatic cleaning. Lamp life is 9,000hrs, and the enhanced safety quick release Twistlok™ UV lamps can be changed without removing the wiper motor, so maintenance requirements are significantly reduced by comparison with other systems. The SPECTRA control system includes features such as data stream monitoring, process interlocks and programmable set points, and it interfaces with most BMS protocols. A key feature is variable power stepping from 100% down to 30%, allowing operators to optimise the operational power of their system to match bather loads and pool opening times. The Wafer generator is 3rd party validated, NSF-50 certified and Model Aquatic Health Code Model (MAHC) compliant and designed to provide a minimum 3-log reduction of Cryptosporidium. UV improves water quality by breaking down chloramines giving bright sparkling water, fresh clean air and residual chlorine levels as low as 0.5ppm.

LIGHT UP WITH FILTREAU UV-C FROM LIGHTHOUSE The Filtreau UV-C system from Lighthouse helps to ensure crystal-clear water in a swimming pool or spa. The sophisticated design and high quality materials produce high UV-C radiation with a wavelength of precisely 253.7nm. This high level of radiation kills almost all bacteria, viruses and even fungi, providing clear and clean water. As a result, the level of added chemicals (e.g. chlorine) can be reduced, ensuring more natural feeling and healthier water. The system is easily installed into domestic pool pipework whether it is a retrospective installation or as part of a new build. The units are also covered by a 2-year warranty on The Evoqua ATG WF range is the next generation of medium pressure UV systems and is the most compact on the market

manufacturing defects. Due to the extra-wide DUPLEX housing on the Filtreau range, the water stays in contact with the UV-C radiation for a longer time. This broad housing also ensures that there is minimal pressure loss during the water treatment. The housing is polished on the inside to minimise the chances of dirt sticking to the walls. Overall, this increases the effectiveness of the UV-C radiation by up to 35%. The intelligent electronics indicate when the lamp is not producing enough radiation and needs to be changed (approx. 12,000hrs), ensuring users know that the device is energy efficient and environmentally friendly.

WATER TREATMENTS & SYSTEMS

Water Treatments That Provide Peace Of Mind Providing a clean and safe water experience is a must for any pool or spa owner, and whilst traditional methods of water treatment are still routinely used, newer technologies have gained in popularity. Putting UV aside, there are numerous other products and systems available which tick all the necessary water treatment boxes. With choices suitable for a variety of settings, we highlight just some of the options By Jon Wadeson

ife for many has never been busier – especially over the last couple of years! There’s a constant flow of ‘things’ that we all have to plan for or contend with day in day out and the chance to just switch off is often sadly out of reach. When it comes to pools and spas, enjoyment and relaxation should be maximised and stress and worry minimised, and that’s true for both commercial and residential settings. So what can pool and spa owners and operators do to lessen the burden of ensuring the water is in the best possible condition? Well a good place to start is by implementing the right products for safe and effective water treatment systems to provide day-to-day peace of mind. Commercial facilities are pretty well set when it comes to automatic water treatment options and with domestic consumers becoming more savvy, now is a good time to show them how to relax, enjoy their pool or spa and smell the coffee not the chloramines!

TRIOGEN OZONE – A BREATHE OF FRESH AIR For those looking to reduce levels of potentially harsh chemical disinfectants, Golden Coast offers a number of different disinfection systems, such as the Triogen O3S.

The ozone-generation units create an active form of oxygen gas that makes for far more powerful water disinfection than chemical methods like chlorine. Triogen O3S is designed for maximum safety. To reduce any risk of a gas leak, the gas is generated and injected under vacuum conditions created by a water-driven venturi. The system greatly lessens the chance of skin and eye irritation by dissolving the ozone gas in the water – destroying choramines, lowering Trihalomethane levels, inhibiting algae growth and oxidising ammonia. The result: substantially better water and air quality in the pool area. “When you’re dealing with chlorineresistant organisms, viruses, bacteria and organic matter, ozone gas is an ideal disinfectant choice,” explained Adam Clark, Sales Director at Golden Coast. “By using ozone, the amount of free chlorine residuals can be cut in half. Domestic pools might only run free chlorine levels of 0.7 ppm using ozone, compared to 2 ppm using other disinfection methods.” Adam adds: “The Triogen units are compact, simple to install and boast high humidity durability, making them an ideal fit for plant rooms in private pools, hotel pools and aquatic applications. They’re built with long-term reliability at the core, with the corona discharge modules designed for ten or more years of operation.”

PLASTICA’S RESILIENCE E NATURAL SALT CHLORINATOR – A NO IRRITATION SYSTEM Traditional chlorine, when combined with swimmer waste and bacteria in the water, creates chloramines. Chloramines cause common undesirable side effects associated with chlorine. Salt chlorinators convert salt in the water into an endless supply of ‘free chlorine’ that continuously oxidizes or eliminates chloramines. With salt chlorination, pool users will not suffer irritation to eyes and skin, bleaching of hair and bathing suits, and there’s no sharp chlorine odours either. Swimmers will enjoy silky soft water and unmatched water quality that can actually be felt. The Resilience E features advanced digital electronics and simple installation in an ‘allin-one’ compact unit. It was designed to ease and optimise the pool owner and operator’s job. From the simple and quick installation (averages 15 minutes without wiring requirements) and easy maintenance. Resilience E is equipped with a straightforward display that indicates the various chlorine output levels. Maintenance and service alerts notify if salt levels in the pool are too low. Most importantly this unique device alerts when the cartridge requires cleaning or nears the end of its life span. The pull out cartridge method makes servicing or replacement an easy task to perform. Ideal for private pools and available in three sizes to fit pools up to 150m3, the Resilience E has been designed to work with variable speed pumps benefits from: • Bi-directional flow sensor • Double ‘low flow’ protection • Full range input voltage automatically accepts 110 or 220V • Built in salinity and water temperature sensors • Replaceable electrolysis cartridge. From the very first time a bather jumps into a swimming pool that uses Zodiac’s MagnaPool® system, they can feel the difference. The water has a gentle, silky feeling against the skin, there is little or no irritation to eyes and hair won’t need washing to get rid of that chlorine smell or sticky salt feeling which is often associated with chlorine and saltwater pools. The pool will always have crystal clear water and will be easy to maintain. The magnesium chloride found in MagnaPool® minerals is derived from the ocean. This form of magnesium has been found to have significant beneficial properties for internal health, as well as helping to relax the mind and body. It can help in detoxifying the body, reducing aches and pains, relieving stress and anxiety and providing the muscles with energy. Studies have proven that absorbing magnesium chloride through the skin (transdermal) is one of the most effective ways for the body to maintain healthy levels of this important mineral. Magnesium is responsible for many important cellular processes in the body. It can support detoxification, reduce stress and alleviate aches. It promotes energy and wellbeing and can restore soft and healthy skin. The MagnaPool® system helps keep chloramine levels to a minimum, so the water is gentler on sensitive skin. Due to the strong

GAFFEY’S HYPROLYSER® ISEC – IDEAL FOR SMALLER SCALE CHLORINE DEMANDS Using only salt, water and energy, the Hyprolyser® from UK manufacturer Gaffey produces a low strength sodium hypochlorite solution containing less than 1% chlorine, below the threshold for hazardous classification. The Hyprolyser® generates hypochlorite on demand, producing a stock of fresh chemical each day and eliminating the need for operators to handle frequent chemical deliveries and store hazardous chlorine chemicals on site. Due to the generated solution being much lower in caustic content than commercial hypochlorite products, chemical injection points do not scale-up, removing the need for injector cleaning by the operator. This benefit alone significantly reduces the likelihood of accidents and chemical contact and affords a big improvement in the reliability of disinfection and dosing system. Using salt as the raw ingredient for generating disinfectant offers some surprising environmental benefits too; for example, for operators using traditional packaged calcium hypochlorite products in drums, switching to bagged salt results in a 92% reduction in the use of plastic for the same quantity of chlorine produced, not to mention a similar reduction in energy and water involved in recycling it. The Hyprolyser® iSEC range is a generation of off-line chlorine generators ideal for smaller scale chlorine demands. Available as 6, 30, 60 and 90g/h Cl models encompassing the latest electrolyser design. With precise brine and water proportioning and automatic regulation of the electrolyser DC current to optimise energy use, iSEC can maintain a highly consistent chlorine concentration in

Waterco’s energy efficient Hydrochlor MK3 Mineral Chlorinator chlorinates the pool making it healthy, crystal clear, and ready to swim in year-round

WATERCO’S HYDROCHLOR MINERAL CHLORINATOR ENHANCES CHLORINE PRODUCTION Waterco’s energy efficient Hydrochlor MK3 Mineral Chlorinator chlorinates the pool making it healthy, crystal clear, and ready to swim in year-round. A saltwater chlorinated pool in fact requires considerably less attention than a standard chlorinated pool. Hydrochlor can work with a standard salt pool, but the company’s engineers didn’t stop there – they also designed it to work in synergy with Waterco’s Mineral Crystals to transform your pool into a therapeutic oasis. Hydrochlor uses the latest Switch Mode Power Technology to increase energy efficiency by over 50%, significantly reducing power consumption. Hydrochlor draws less current and this translates to high power conversion and less energy wastage, without compromising chlorine output. Its unique Intelligent Power Pack intuitively recognises the size of the connected chlorinator cell and automatically adjusts its power output to suit. This allows customers to stock one power pack, rather than a power pack per cell – while simultaneously reducing inventory.

Also, the cell housings are identical, which means that the salt cell can be easily upgraded or downgraded. An alarm indicates when salt levels in the pool water are too high or too low; if the pool is running beyond the maximum recommended salt level, the chlorinator will limit its output to protect the chlorinator cell. Hydrochlor includes an in-built, easy to use timer equipped with battery backup, which will maintain settings for up to 150 hours and its self-cleaning chlorinator cell has the added ability to reverse its polarity and automatically clean calcium build-up off its electrodes. If no water flow is detected in the chlorinator cell, Hydrochlor automatically switches off the chlorine production to protect the chlorinator cell and activates the No Flow LED indicator.SPN

POOL & SPA PUMPS

Products That Keep The Water Flowing Found at the heart of every plant room, pool and spa pumps keep the water moving and are an essential component in any efficient system. These powerful products have improved over recent years and the latest variable speed options have for many, become the pump of choice for many applications. With the choices now wider than ever, in this issue we highlight some of the best models that are available By Jon Wadeson

P

roviding powerful circulation for the water found in pools and spas of various sizes, pumps are extremely important pieces of plant room equipment that work away in the background of every domestic or commercial installation. Innovation and technological advances continue to be applied to these vital but rather unassuming products, with improvements made to their durability, performance, energyefficiency and running costs. With a number of choices available for projects of any size and from both well-known and new brands, this issue we take a look at some of the models that will keep the water flowing in 2022.

COMPACT DESIGN AND PERFORMANCE COME TOGETHER IN THE NEW SENEXT XP AstralPool has launched its new water circulation pump, the Senext XP, a new small-scale, high performance and easy-tomaintain solution, suitable for all types of pools and spas. The Senext XP delivers the power of a big pump on a small scale, and is easily fitted in any type of pool plant room. Its compact design has made it possible to reduce its size by 25% when compared with other pumps intended for the same uses. This small size does not make it less The Senext XP is a new small-scale, high performance and easy-to-maintain solution from AstralPool UK

powerful though and the Senext XP delivers 12% greater hydraulic performance compared with other pumps in its segment. Thanks to the new designs of the hydraulic system and the strainer, better performance and optimum water flow rates have been achieved. The ease of installation and maintenance that it delivers are its most outstanding features. The 1 1/2” internal threaded ports or 2 1/4” external threaded ports using 50 mm couplings make the Senext XP pump easy and quick to install. In addition, it can be retrofitted in existing pools using the retrofit kit included that comes with an additional base and a 1 1/2” reducer coupling. It also comes with a new built-in handle that makes it extremely easy to both carry and locate. In coming up with ways on how to improve other features, such as the pump’s maintenance and cleaning, AstralPool added three new improvements to its design. A pre-filter cap that can be opened without using any type of tool; an extra-large pre-filter basket with a capacity of 2 litres for reducing the frequency it has to be emptied; and a double water drainage for hibernation.

GOLDEN COAST PUMPS – POWERFUL, PRACTICAL AND ADAPTABLE In the event of a pool pump breaking, installers are typically left with two options: buy the same pump for the sake of efficiency or buying a different pump which may require expensive replumbing work. But with a number of Speck pumps – available exclusively from Golden Coast – there’s another way. The GC SuperPro is a high-performance pump that offers a range of single or three-phase models and makes an ideal replacement for the Hayward Super Pump and Pentair® SuperFlo. It’s designed with an easily serviceable 4-bolt pump assembly and includes an integrated handle for simple transport and installation, plus a transparent lid for quick and easy inspection.

“Having other options helps to take some of the headache out of specifying a job,” explained Adam Clark, Sales Director at Golden Coast. “With the various Speck pumps we stock, it’s easier to find the most cost- and time-efficient solution for adding a new pump to an existing filter.” Also available is the Speck BADU EasyFit. This unit is compatible with at least nine different pump types, and makes an ideal alternative to Pentair® SuperFlo and StaRite pumps. To ensure total flexibility with existing pipework, seven connection sets are available. “The name EasyFit tells you exactly what to expect from these pumps,” adds Adam. “With the various connection sets it’s simple to adjust the height and position of the pump’s suction and discharge ports, letting you install the new pump in the same place as the old one. “EasyFit is also an eco-friendlier option as there is far less plastic waste in comparison to what is generated by a traditional refit when changing to a new pump brand.” The range is extremely versatile offering models with flow rates from 9m3/hr to 45m3/hr. It’s made from high quality plastics and has powder-coated motors meaning it is extremely resistant to corrosion, making it suitable for a wide variety of domestic and commercial pools.

THE EFFICIENT NEO RANGE OF PUMPS FROM HERBORNER Herborner offer a wide range of pump solutions for the wet leisure sector and their herborner.neo range offers a combination of an energy-efficient motor and fully smoothcoated pump hydraulics which guarantee maximum protection against wear, corrosion and deposits. An IE5 permanent magnet motor, specially adapted and built-in frequency inverter plus the maximum impeller diameter demonstrate the complete efficiency of the new generation of pumps, which use a speed controller to regulate the available power of the motor within a typical working range. For the operator, this series means lower life cycle costs thanks to the best possible energy efficiency and quality, resulting in cost savings at every operating point where the pumps can be used. As a result, this innovation creates a resource-saving product that reduces CO2 emissions in the long term. That makes the herborner.neo one of the most sustainable products in the pump industry. The herborner.neo pumps are tailored to the specific application in each case.

The herborner.Fneo can be used flexibly as a block pump, which makes it ideal for the complex world of plant engineering. The herborner.Xneo is ideal for use as a circulating pump, with its built-in hair and fibre filter. The portfolio is rounded out by the inline block pump, herborner.Dneo, which can be installed directly in pipelines. And of course the WATERblue-B is also available in the ‘maximised’ design, as WATERblue-Bneo. In addition to the herborner.neo range of pumps, the company also has pump selection software – PAHN AI. This web-based software allows simpler, intelligent pump selection through the company’s website.

AQUASPEED – A NEW GENERATION OF AN INDUSTRY FAVOURITE As well as a modern look, the new Aquaspeed model which is exclusive to Certikin has an upgraded motor which is manufactured using the latest technology to provide an efficient and powerful pump. ecologically sound solutions can be provided for any installation. As a pool filtration cycle occupies 99% of the run time of a pool pump Waterco offers several variable speed Eco pumps capable of moderating their motor speed, reducing water flow when required, and reducing energy consumption by up to 82% compared to a standard motor pump. Lowering a pump’s flow rate not only significantly decreases the pump’s energy requirements, but also reduces water flow resistance in pool equipment and plumbing. Even though the pump may need to be operated for longer, it is far more efficient pumping low water flow compared to high water flow. The ECO-V is ideal for domestic swimming pools with ancillary systems such as heating, in-floor cleaning, fountains and vacuum cleaning. Owners can operate the product on a low (ECO) speed setting for the majority of its running time. Available in single-phase 1.00 hp and 1.50 hp versions, the 3-speed Lacronite ECO-V variable pump is equipped with the very latest permanent magnet brushless DC motor, reducing water flow when needed to lower energy consumption.

OPINION

It’s A Family Affair “A lot of wet leisure businesses are family businesses, as ours is. What’s it like being in business with your father, your brother, sister or aunt? What is it like when your boardroom table is also the kitchen table?” In this issue, Jamie Adams looks at the subject of family businesses and recounts his own experiences at Golden Coast

Y

ou might think that a family run business is a smaller business; that it’s just there to give the kids a job, but that’s a long way from the truth. As far as Wikipedia are concerned, to be a family business, family members must continue to be involved in the management of the company. The family must hold at least 50% of the shares in private companies and at least 32% in public companies. On that list are: Walmart. Ford. Nike. Mars. Porsche. BMW and an awful lot more billion-dollar companies that you have never heard of. (You can see where the idea of ‘Succession’ came from, can’t you?) So family businesses are serious businesses but they also have their own unique set of challenges and opportunities.

45 YEARS AGO, DAD AND I BUILT THE POOL THAT BUILT GOLDEN COAST We built it because my two brothers and I loved swimming and we built it so that we could lark about and have fun. Innovative and creative even then, that first pool had a DIY solar heating system made from black alkathene pipe rolled up like a giant liquorice coil on the roof of the plant room. Before long we were building pools for our friends and neighbours. Just 20 years later I was sat in my parents’ garden with my brothers, a cup of tea in hand and enduring of all things, an interview for a job at GC. My father, who has never been a fan of nepotism, wanted to make sure that we all understood the pitfalls of getting involved in a family business, particularly one with five strong willed characters each with their own portfolio of strengths and weaknesses.

THREE JOBS FOR THREE BROTHERS As with any business run by a family, there’s a strong chance that brothers and sisters will soon become consumed by competitiveness if you don’t get the structure right. Dad saw that each of his sons needed a specific area of

a family business has lifelong implications to relationships within that family. All business decisions are important but within a family business, they can be doubly so as people automatically have multiple roles; board member and sister, Finance Director and mother.

FAMILIES THAT TALK TOGETHER, STAY TOGETHER

responsibility where they could grow personally while working towards a common goal. With design playing a major part in my later education and working previously as an operations manager with another industry distributor for 14 years, I covered marketing and operations while Shaun and Dominic divided up our various product ranges and looked after their respective sales. We carried on this way until 2006 when we began to realise that Dad was taking more and more time off. We asked him if he had considered retiring and almost on the spot he announced that he was intending to do just that by the end of the following month.

PLAN FOR SUCCESSION We had no succession plan in place; we hadn’t even talked about it. Dad asked us all if we would like the position of MD and two hands went up. A couple of days later David Adams retired as Managing Director and took on the role of Chairman. I became MD. In many, many ways we were lucky with the success of this process. Working in a business where your parents are the founders is seen to be one of the most difficult of all family business scenarios. Founders often never want to leave but Dad having put the thought into our roles had total trust and faith in us to take on the reins and took to retirement like the proverbial diver to a pool. Perhaps he realised that every decision in

Working in a business where your parents are the founders is seen to be one of the most difficult of all family business scenarios. Founders often never want to leave” 84 February 2022 SPN 84_SPN_February_2022_Opinion.indd 84

Managing the family part of the family business is the key. Emotions can run high around the boardroom table but the voices around the kitchen table can easily get much louder. Communication is the secret. Talk with each other as much as you can and then talk some more. No one should ever be left wondering what his or her siblings are thinking. In the earlier days of Golden Coast many a decision was made over a lunch break or talking something through during a walk in the fresh Devon air without the need for formal meetings, minutes and memos. Of course when any business gets to a certain size, corporate governance comes in to play but by then open and trusting relationships should be well established.

LIKE FATHER, LIKE SONS? Our father, David Adams, had the vision to start the Golden Coast business back in the 70s and over the following 20 years my brothers and I joined him, each of us having worked in businesses both within and outside of the wet leisure industry. The experience of being an employee together with the knowledge and skills developed during those years was invaluable in helping us develop the business but I know that we are all glad to be back, working together. To date, none of our kids have shown much interest in joining the business although nearly all of them have worked here at some time or another during the summer holidays and had to graft hard in support of our amazing distribution team. There will always be an opportunity for them here. As long as they do well in the interview! Golden Coast 01271 378100 www.goldenc.com
