For the vast majority across the industry, last year was an extremely busy and rewarding year. With a summer that good, if you weren’t rushed off your feet, chances are you were doing something wrong. But what do the next 12 months hold in store? 2019 is set to be a defining year for the UK and its business relationships within Europe and further afield too. If the last few weeks are anything to go by, it could be an unprecedented rollercoaster ride and it is still uncertain as to how industries – including our own – will be affected and what adjustments will be necessary. For the UK wet leisure industry, the first major event of any year is the SPATEX exhibition, which is returning to what has now become its spiritual home of the Ricoh Arena in Coventry. This is the show’s 23rd year and the organisers of the annual event have pulled out all the stops to make it a memorable one. For anyone who has a need for new products, services, some inspiration or who is perhaps looking to improve their knowledge and understanding, SPATEX really is the place to be. Taking place 29-31 January, and featuring over 100 high quality exhibitors, the three day event helps to keep the trade up to speed with the latest trends and technologies. More than just an exhibition, SPATEX also offers a unique opportunity to network with a wide range of colleagues from across the wet leisure industry and with uncertain times ahead, attending may just provide visitors with a competitive edge that they didn’t even realise they needed. Speaking from experience, I’ve found it has always been a great investment of my time and this year (as in every alternate year) it closely follows on from the Piscine Global Europe exhibition where numerous new products have just been launched. In this latest issue, we feature a full preview of

In his regular piece, Jamie Adams reflects on how the industry is well positioned to lift the mood of what can often feel like an increasingly gloomy nation, plus we’ve a piece which covers the subject of Turbidity from the experts at Lovibond Tintometer. This issue we also reveal a brand new UK manufactured pool panel system from Lighthouse and we take a look back at the formation of the ISPE who celebrate their 40th anniversary this year. Swim School pools get a double look-in this issue with the STA highlighting an unusual project within a multi-storey car park plus we also take a look at a modular swim school pool build by Cresta Leisure. There’s also useful updates from the BSPF, SPATA and BISHTA including a look at the many benefits membership offers to businesses plus a look at training including options for Continuous (or Continuing) Professional Development (CPD). Finally, we’ve also got our round up of all the latest industry, people, product and eco news from both here in the UK and further afield. So with this issue of SPN covered, all that leaves me to say is I hope you enjoy reading it, here’s to a successful 2019 and I hope to see you at SPATEX!

World Leisure Wins One Bishopsgate Plaza Pool Contract Leyland headquartered swimming pool provider World Leisure (UK) Ltd has been appointed by UOL Development (UK) Limited to build the water leisure facilities at a development in central London. The 43-storey tower under construction at 150 Bishopsgate comprises London’s first Pan Pacific Hotel and will provide five-star wellness, meeting and events spaces and a 380 seat double height ballroom and conference facility. One hundred and sixty private residences will also occupy the upper levels of the main tower building. With landscaping and retail, restaurants and cafés within a renovated Devonshire Row, developers say the new One Bishopsgate Plaza will become a vibrant heart in the city. Leading water leisure company World Leisure has been commissioned to build a 16.5m x 3.6m swimming pool, with 100% perimeter infinity edge, for use by hotel and domestic residents at the development. World Leisure Managing Director Simon

Smith said: “We are extremely pleased to have been contracted to deliver this contract as part of one of the most exciting developments in central London.” World Leisure (UK) is a multi-award winning provider of design, technical and installation services for the water leisure industry. With expertise in pool and plant design

and installation, the company delivers a comprehensive range of projects, from exclusive domestic developments, through to large international projects, with energy conservation at the forefront of the design. World Leisure (UK) Ltd 01772 284883 www.worldleisureuk.co.uk

Clean Air Is As Important As Clean Pool Water We spend some of our time in the pool ‘swimming’ in water and we expect it to be clean, however all our lives are spent ‘breathing’ in air, so it makes sense to make sure both the pool water we swim in, and the air we breathe, are both free from any harmful substances. Swimming pool ventilation systems are there to provide clean air, so that swimmers can enjoy an experience that is pleasurable and healthy. Filters do the job of removing particulates from the air. Traffic air pollution has recently been identified as being of concern. Fine combustion particles of size ranges PM1, PM2.5 and PM10 being

6 February 2019 SPN 6+12_SPN_Feb_18_News_General.indd 6

hazardous to health. Recent research has found that toxic traffic particles in the PM1 range below 1 micron in size can be inhaled and penetrate the bloodstream via the lungs causing serious bodily harm which may lead to cancer. These types of airborne particles have even been linked to the onset of

brain function impairment and dementia. New building indoor air quality standards BS EN 16798-3:2017 defines clean air using ODA and SUP classifications and relates them to World Health Organization limits. Air filtration used to filter out PM1 particles to a high level of

efficiency can give protection and the benefit of a healthier swimming experience that will enhance wellbeing. Using ePM1 rated filters to BS EN ISO 16890:2016 to 70% efficiency, or better, will give the necessary level of protection. Recotherm offer units with enhanced filtration for inner city locations to meet these new regulations. The company will be hosting a seminar at SPATEX 2019 on air filtration, covering the latest classifications and products available to satisfy customer demand. NEWS KIRKBY FINALLY TO GET SWIMMING POOLS After a wait of 80 years, Kirby looks set to get swimming facilities after Ashfield District Council unveiled plans to replace Festival Hall leisure centre with a new £14m centre which will include a 25m swimming pool with adjustable floor plus a leisure pool. Land was originally purchased by the local council back in the 1930s in the hopes of building a swimming pool, but has stood empty ever since.

HISTORIC POOLS OF BRITAIN WELCOMES NEW MEMBERS Historic Pools of Britain, the national membership body for indoor and outdoor historic pools, has announced the addition of three new members to its ranks, including Grange Lido in Morecambe Bay. The group behind Save Grange Lido hit the national news recently for the momentum it is building behind its campaign to save the iconic art deco pool, the only one of its type left in the North of England. The lido closed in 1993, its fate uncertain, and yet its historic value is unquestionable. The other two new Historic Pools recruits are both fully functioning pools that are open and being enjoyed by the public. Marshall Street Leisure Centre in Westminster, London is a grand Grade II listed public baths and Brightlingsea Lido in Essex is a freshwater, unheated, seasonal pool situated on a tidal estuary, which since 2018 has been run by the community. Gill Wright of Historic Pools of Britain said: “With more and more community campaigns being established to support historic pools the value of joining forces is being recognised, as well as our role in sharing insight, learnings and experience that takes place amongst all members.”

Water For Wellbeing In London’s Historic Docks With its self-contained wharves, secure warehouses, underground vaults and acres of open water, London’s historic docks in Wapping once played a critical role in the city’s international trade of luxury commodities. Closed to shipping since 1969, the area has attracted a series of new developments, the latest being London Dock by St George of the Berkley Group. The Health and Fitness Suite at London Docks includes a number of purpose-built amenities including a fully tiled 20-metre indoor swimming pool. The pool features a vitality spa located at one end comprising of a number of spa jets and two stainless steel neck massagers. Designed and built by Aqua Platinum Projects, a robust and reliable filtration system was needed that would maintain crystal clear, healthy pool water year-round for residents. “Being a prestigious development in the heart of London, the pool equipment had to be of the highest quality and that’s why Waterco was our preferred choice,” said Aqua Platinum Projects Managing Director Ryan Fronda. As a result, Aqua Platinum Projects installed 2 x SMDD1200 Micron commercial sand filters and 2 x 6HP hydrostar commercial pumps in the 145m3 main pools and the same equipment in the 12m3 vitality spa along with 2 x Hydrostorm 1.5HP pumps for the neck massagers and 2 x 2.0HP Hydrostorm pumps to operate the spa jets. The SMDD range of Micron commercial filters were chosen as their ‘fishtail lateral arrangement’ results in superior filtration and reduced backwashing times, saving thousands of litres of water over the year. The pumps chosen are specifically designed to meet the demands of the commercial market with

regard to performance, reliability and quietness. “The heart of any swimming pool is the filtration and we insist on the best as that is what our clients expect, and for this reason we have and will only use Waterco filtration and pumps,” said Ryan. Construction Set To Begin On Leisure Centre In Sheringham The first stage of building work is set to begin on Cambridge-based Saunders Boston Architects’ design of a £10.7m state-of-theart leisure centre in Sheringham, Norfolk – which will replace the existing ‘Splash’ facility. The project, which has now been granted planning permission, will include a six-

lane, 25-metre pool, a 13-metre learner pool with a moving floor to cater for different activities and user groups plus numerous other facilities. Nathan Swift, Director at Saunders Boston Architects, said: “We are celebrating the news that planning permission for this exciting project has been

granted and the local community will soon be able to benefit from an improved, accessible facility. Our design was developed around community aspirations with the aim of providing excellent sports facilities to all members of the local community.” The contemporary new design pays homage to the character of the existing Splash facility through the use of a barrelvaulted roof, whilst also creating its own identity deriving its concept from the ‘longshore drift’ of the North Norfolk coast line. The design incorporates a combination of water saving measures, air source heat pumps and solar hot water making the building more sustainable, both environmentally and economically.

NEWS UK’S OLDEST OPENAIR POOLS TO BE RESTORED The oldest surviving open-air swimming baths in the UK are set to be fully restored and reopened to the public, thanks to a grant from the National Lottery. The Grade II* listed Cleveland Pools, a 200-yearold Georgian lido in the historic city of Bath, has secured funding of £4.7m to enable restoration to begin. Built in the shape of a miniature crescent, referencing Bath’s renowned architecture, the site includes two bathing pools, the original changing rooms and a private ladies pool. First opened in 1815 following the Bathwick Water Act which prohibited nude bathing in the river, the site has been closed since 1984. The project will conserve the Georgian features and upgrade the facilities to allow for year-round swimming and other activities. The pools will be naturally treated and heated using the latest technology, and when complete, there will be a 25-metre swimming pool, children’s splash area, pavilion and café for the public to enjoy.

SERCO LEISURE WINS OPERATOR AWARD Serco Leisure has won the title ‘Water Leisure Operator of the Year’ at a recent Awards ceremony in Birmingham. Kate McKnight, Serco Leisure’s Head of Aquatics said: “We’ve had a great year in the pool at Serco Leisure and this just puts the icing on the cake. We have a really strong aquatics offering; swim teachers who change lives, fun inflatable sessions which bring the whole family together, swim clubs nurturing the next Mark Foster and Rebecca Adlington – it all feeds into a set of water-based attractions we’re extremely proud of.”

Inside Dantherm Group’s New UK Offices Modern, clean, amazing are not words that you would have used to describe Dantherm Group UK offices one year ago. The company has undergone a complete renovation over the course of 2018 with the group’s CEO Torben Duer to create a ‘showroom facility’ at the forefront of everyone’s mind. After becoming part of Dantherm Group in 2016 it was more than obvious that the old ‘Calorex’ offices and manufacturing complex needed more than just a lick of paint. With the investment in place to create a UK headquarters with a modern factory and state-ofthe-art office space, a team of dedicated staff was drafted in to manage the huge refurbishment project.

Intermodern, an established commercial refurbishment company, was contracted to renovate the office space with the factory floor space being designed and constructed by a project team from staff at Dantherm. Intermodern Project Director, Steve Watts’ brief was to transform Unit 12 which was previously used for manufacturing and stores, into a corporate environment that reflected the new Dantherm Group branding and construction started in February 2018. UK Marketing Manager, Anne Guerrero was placed in charge of all interior design decisions. “My main aim was to create a modern working environment with clean lines, a Scandinavian feel to the furniture to reflect our Danish partners and bring some local aspects into the offices as well,” said Mrs Guerrero. PWTAG Launch Hot Tub Book At First Conference In December, a pretty full house at Drayton Manor Hotel in Tamworth was entertained and informed by two aspects of recent work from the Pool Water Treatment Advisory Group (PWTAG). One was the launch of PWTAG’s latest book, ‘Hot Tubs for Business’ a definitive guide to this expanding yet challenging arena. The second was wrapped up in PWTAG’s first annual conference, an opportunity for delegates – all of whom were given a copy of the new book – to hear something of what the group

had been up to in the last year. The hot tub book was introduced by two of its authors, PWTAG Directors Howard Gosling and Dr John Lee. They underlined how important it was to get the basics right, in order to avoid the pitfalls, including infection, inherent in a hot tub not properly designed or run in a commercial operation. Among the conference presentations during a day of interesting highlights, two stood out. Dr Rachel Chalmers from NHS Wales described her groundbreaking, PWTAGfunded survey of the chlorineresistant, highly pathogenic bug Cryptosporidium. It was found in 7% of backwash water samples, chosen at random – most commonly when pools were busy. Dr Chalmers emphasised the importance of PWTAG guidelines in this area. A presentation from Martin

Wood of Pool Sentry engaged the audience with what use of particle counters had revealed. Filtration efficiency (at least 90% removal of crypto-sized particles) was confirmed as the vital factor, and the work confirmed a key number that PWTAG’s book ‘Swimming Pool Water’ has always prescribed from ‘good practice’ – that 1.7 times the instantaneous bathing load delivers a good target for circulation rate. Dura Pro Extends Pool Use All Year Round

Students Go To Great Lengths To Learn University students were among the first to get a look behind-the-scenes at the £5m restoration work happening at Newcastle City Pool and Turkish Baths. A group of sport management students from Northumbria University were invited to take a tour of the Grade II listed building, and get a first-hand insight into the redevelopment process. The pool and Turkish baths – which originally opened in November 1928 – will be given a new lease of life following the refurbishment by registered charity Fusion Lifestyle. The visit formed part of a wider programme of engagement between Fusion and the University. Tim Mills, Director of Business Development at Fusion Lifestyle, said: “It was a pleasure to welcome students from the sport management course along to see how we’re progressing. “We want to get them involved as much as possible, whether that’s through creating placement opportunities or helping them secure employment here when the site reopens.” Michael Wood, senior lecturer at Northumbria University, said: “Newcastle City Pool represents a significant investment by Fusion in the city – it’s a fantastic local project of national significance that we want our students to be engaged with. “We’ll be using the City Pool project as a case study to enhance teaching, looking at what it takes to complete projects like this and scoping opportunities to undertake research to help drive its success. “Facilities like Newcastle City Pool and Turkish Baths are essential in helping people to lead active lifestyles and encouraging participation in sport for future generations.” When the work is complete, the venue will feature a public pool and Turkish baths, fitness suites, exercise studios, a spa with treatment rooms and a café bistro.

A high-profile Cheshire couple contacted LJW Swimming Pools to improve heating efficiency in their pool complex. The couple used an oil boiler for their entire pool area – costly to run in the colder months. After talking with the technical team at Golden Coast about air source heat pumps, the Dura Pro was recommended as a costeffective solution for all year-round pool use. Lee Wood, an engineer at LJW said: “This was my first Dura Pro heat pump… The installation was easy and only took two days. I am really impressed with the support and the availability of goods from Golden Coast.” Jamie Adams, Managing Director of Golden Coast said: “Since it is corrosion resistant and includes a self-diagnostic control panel, the Dura Pro is an efficient solution for year-round pool use… all for an economical price.” With the days getting shorter and colder in the UK, the Dura Pro is becoming an increasingly popular choice for extending pool use throughout the country. It can be used all year round – heating in winter and cooling in summer – making it an ideal fit for the UK climate. The Dura Pro heats a swimming pool quickly and quietly, helping to save a substantial amount on energy bills. Lee said: “I would highly recommend the product to other companies as our customers are overjoyed with the heat pump, since it saves them a quarter of the oil bill in three months.” Golden Coast 01271 378100 www.goldenc.co

Funding Secured For ‘Eco-hub’ Initiative At Yorkshire Pool

Aquatic Play At Coventry’s New £36.7m Leisure Centre Takes Shape Designed by FaulknerBrowns Architects, ‘The Wave’ building is a unique, circular shape to reflect the city’s weaving past. A highlight of its many facilities will be a spectacular open plan water park with a viewing area that will provide all visitors with a bird’s eye view of the aquatic play below. All water park levels are connected via a spiralling ramp to ensure every age and ability can access the fun, meaning The Wave will be one of the most accessible water parks in the country. Having decided on the layout of the pool areas and waterslides, FaulknerBrowns Architects and Hadron Consulting asked aquatic play specialists Ustigate Waterplay and Vortex International to complete the scheme with products that would deliver the maximum wow factor. FaulknerBrowns Architects and Hadron Consulting especially liked the aesthetically pleasing and innovative products designed and manufactured by Ustigate’s long-term partner Vortex, a world leader in aquatic solutions with 7,623 installations in 50 countries, renowned for their awardwinning products. ‘High Octane’ and ‘Sensory Overload’

were the end client’s key words to describe their requirement, and Ustigate and Vortex responded with a dynamic scheme to thrill and excite every water player. The design required bespoke engineering to account for the curvature of the building. Many standout design features have been incorporated into the inclusive Splashpad, located at the base of the ramp. A variety of gentle ground sprays have been placed at the entrance to greet each new arrival. Fun-filled elements include two Elevation™ play structures with decks, waterslides, accessibility bridges and slopes that enable all visitors to enjoy spraying leaves, spinning flowers, cannon fun and tipping buckets. There are products that engage children in collaborative and cognitive play throughout the design. The tallest product on the Splashpad will be the exhilarating ‘Superwave’, armed with a turbine and standing 6.29 metres high, it will be creating the biggest splash and soaking everyone in its path. Bramley Baths in Leeds has secured a £500,000 investment to establish an innovative new ‘eco-hub’ at the beautiful Edwardian Grade II listed building. The baths, which dates back to 1904, is a community-led social enterprise and houses a public gym, swimming pool, steam room and space for community events. Once created, the hub should bring down energy costs by up to 40%, significantly reducing environmental impact and allowing the baths to re-invest the savings into other projects. Power to Change, an independent trust whose funding is used to strengthen community businesses across England, has provided just over £295,000 from its Community Business Fund. Sport England has contributed a further £75,000, with the remainder coming from a loan and the bath’s financial reserves. Bramley Baths CEO Sue Stones said the investment will replace the existing ageing machinery and hopes it will reduce to ‘practically zero’ the number of pool closures due to technical problems. She said: “This investment will ensure we can continue to provide services to the community for many years to come. “This is just the first phase in our plans to invest in the building. We hope to follow this up with a project on a similar scale to update the rest of the Baths.” Bramley Baths Chairman John Battle said extra staff will be employed to support the additional works. He added: “This investment is fabulous news for the people of Bramley and beyond. Not only will we be lowering our eco footprint and making a big difference to the environment, we’ll also be helping to further secure the future of the Baths for future generations.”

Panda Pod Was A Top Seller For 2018

The Pool Lift Company has revealed that the Panda Pod pool lift was its bestselling product for 2018. The Panda Pod, a top of the range fully motorised mobile pool lift, is proving to be the customer’s choice when it comes to buying a flexible access solution for swimming pools. This product offers many features including automatic traction which means the operator can effortlessly steer the portable pool lift to the pool side without having to push. “Customers are attracted to a mobile pool lift as a swimmer can be transported direct from changing rooms to poolside without the need of a wheelchair. The Panda Pod has a unique electric propulsion system like a powered pallet truck, this means the operator can just steer the pool lift into position without having to push. It is an

ideal solution if you need to overcome a slope, tight corners or if the changing room is some distance from the pool,” said Debbie Pearson, from the Pool Lift Company. Once the Panda Pod is in position at the poolside, the chair is lowered into the water by an attendant operating the controls on the lift control panel. An optional handset control is also available for this machine. This product has an automatic integrated braking system and 2 speed automatic handling. The Panda Pod mobile pool lift solution is suitable for any swimming pool which is ground level and the person is being lowered down into the water. Introducing OFI – The Smart Pool Monitor Do you or your customers want an easy to use, effective and high-quality pool monitor to monitor pool water quality easily through an app which is available on all smart devices? If so, then you may want to take a look at the OFI Smart Pool Monitor. It’s a product which analyses water quality 24/7 and readings are available continuously through the OFI app. These measurements are analysed using algorithms to extract the important data that tells owners the state of the pool water. These values are then sent via the app in a clear and simple way. Based on its indicators, OFI tells the owner when and how they need to act to ensure the pool water stays at the optimum quality. Two different versions of OFI are available – OFI Light and OFI Zen. If the pool has a cover, the OFI Zen is recommend. It will slide under the cover, so owners don’t need to take it out of the water. If no cover is present, either option can be selected based on the owner’s preference. As indicated, The OFI Zen is compatible with pools equipped with covers but other differences include: the appearance and design of the monitor plus the ‘light decoration’ function, which is naturally more important with the OFI Light variant. Beyond that, both versions offer the same functionality for measuring and analysing pool water. All OFI monitors come with a two-year guarantee, no monthly subscriptions or fees to access the pool information on the app. It is arguably one of the must-have smart swimming pool monitors for 2019. New Strap System For Plastica’s Wooden Exercise Pools Plastica have launched a new strap system for their wooden pools. The company began testing this system last May and now it is ready for launch on their 4 metre wooden exercise pools. With the new strap system no steel braces are required, so the pool can be built directly onto any hard surface. This will be a time and cost-saving improvement for both trade customers and end-users. The straps are stainless steel for long-lasting durability, ensuring anti-rust and antierosion benefits. So, customers will get the best of both worlds – an aesthetically pleasing wooden pool, with a counter-current to keep fit plus a pool to relax and cool down in during the warm summer days ahead. Lumi-solar® – New Patented Transparent Solar Slats From Oase Oase automatic pool covers have announced a new tri-extrusion layer profile of 66,7mm width – the lumi-solar® slat. Equipped with an anti-algae hinge, the lumi-solar® slat offers superb UV resistance thanks to an additional layer of UV protection. The special patented design of the new profile keeps light from the hinge and prevents algae. In addition, previous solar slats had to be made with a black underside, but the lumi-solar® profiles are now transparent. Transparent solar slats provide a more efficient solar effect. Exposed to the sun, the air heats up in the hollow space within the slat profile. This heat then warms up the water underneath in the swimming pool – much like a greenhouse. The results of tests during last summer showed that the performance of heating up the water was an increase of +30-40%. With the use of transparent solar slats, owners can still enjoy the lights in the swimming pool too. The solar transparent slats give a more modern touch and add to the design of any pool. The lumi-solar® slat is currently available in two standard colours – Vived Aqua and Cristal Clear. Oase automatic pool covers +32 (0) 5733 336 www.oase.be

Cost Effective Heating From Waterco Getting the most out of any pool means keeping it at a swimmable temperature for the maximum number of hours each day and maximum number of days each year, and a heat pump from Waterco can economically keep a pool warm. Heat pumps only require energy to operate a compressor and a fan motor, using low amperage in the process. For every 1kW of electricity consumed, Electroheat ECO-V inverter heat pumps can produce up to 7kW of heat, offering significant savings compared with propane gas, natural gas and electric heaters. Electroheat ECO-V heat pumps use a fraction of the energy to generate the same amount of heat and unlike solar heating, there is no reliance on the sun as the latent heat in the air is used. The ElectroHeat ECO-V has the flexibility to vary the speed of the fan motor and compressor to maintain a constant temperature allowing it to use less energy

20 February 2019 SPN 20+SPN_Feb_19_Prod+Eco_News.indd 20

than conventional heat pumps. The heat pump adjusts output from 50% to 100% depending on heat demand thereby reducing energy consumption and reaching the desired set temperature quicker. Inverter technology provides a more precise water temperature without the fluctuations and power wastage of fixed speed systems and is significantly more energy efficient with energy savings of between 15 – 30% over fixed speed systems. In addition, the speed control of the compressor and fan motor also means quieter operation. To have a closer look at the ElectroHeat ECO-V and the benefits it provides, Waterco will be exhibiting at SPATEX 2019 at the end of January – see them on stand E20. The New PoolLab 1.0 – A Product For Everyone! Testing pool water can be a real pain. Is the pH-value balanced? Is there still enough chlorine in the water? Are the alkalinity (acid capacity) and cyanuric acid (stabiliser) in an acceptable range? Test strips and pool water testers are frequently used as Photometers have often been reserved for professionals simply because they are expensive. Luckily, times have changed and Water-i.d./Pool-i.d. have launched an inexpensive Photometer that everyone can afford! The new PoolLab 1.0 Photometer is easy to use, gives accurate results of 11 pool parameters (tested on 3 wavelengths!) and

HOT TUB, SWIM SPA & WELLNESS

Climacube Water Heat System Reduces Energy Costs National hot tub supplier Park Leisure Solutions Ltd finished an impressive 2018 with their groundbreaking, energy efficient, Climacube Water Heating System winning both ‘Spa Product of the Year’ and ‘Energy Efficient Product of the Year’ at a recent industry awards. The arrival of the UK designed Climacube Water Heat System is set to revolutionise the commercial hot tub and spa industry, with major UK Park Operators already using or ordering the new energy efficient design. Backed by a worldwide patent, the stand alone Climacube Water Heat System works off a standard 13 amp power supply and can either be supplied from new or retrofitted to any contemporary hot tub or spa. In test results against current conventional heating systems the Climacube saved on average just under 60% less time to heat up a hot tub and a massive 85.7% reduction in energy cost – great news for both customers

and the environment. Managing Director, Stuart Mulchay said: “Our design offers the very latest energy saving heat technology, dramatically reducing running costs, reducing the carbon footprint and enables customers to use their hot tubs and spas all year round, at the desired temperature without the concern of cost.” Climacube has been developed using the latest energy saving technology and is designed to create hot water at a fraction of the cost associated with conventional methods. By absorbing ambient heat from the air the highly advanced specialised refrigerant gas, propelled by a silent compressor (similar to a refrigerator but in reverse), enables a quick heat up time with no need to add expensive additional heating elements or hot fill from a boiler. The Climabube only requires 800

watts (less than 3.5 amps) to operate. In tests at an ambient temperature of 5 degrees C the Climacube produced a rise in temperature of 6 degrees per hour in a 1,200 litre hot tub. Park Leisure Solutions Ltd 01202 691166 www.parkleisuresolutions.co.uk

Superior Spas Breaks Ground On New Factory Superior Spas, the East Midlands-based spa supplier has broken ground on a brand new, 400,000 sq ft factory in China as it pushes ahead with plans to up its own brand manufacturing and expand its presence internationally beyond the UK and Europe. According to the company, the huge new space will be the largest hot tub manufacturing facility in the world and will give Superior Spas the capacity to expand further into manufacturing for other hot tub firms. Coupled with a new distribution centre being constructed in Chesterfield, it will see the East Midlands outfit become one of the largest spa and hot tub firms in the world too – at a time when many businesses are struggling to shake off Brexit fears. Robert Carlin, Superior Spas Managing Director said: “This is a very exciting time for Superior Spas and we are striding forwards with confidence as we realise our very ambitious growth plans. Having our own state-of-the-art manufacturing facility is a game changer for the Superior Spas brand and one that will elevate us to an international presence outside of Europe for the first time. This will also mean we create more jobs, bring more to the local economy at home and generate more export and import business.” The firm expects to create 20 new UK jobs initially and hundreds of new roles in China. Production at the factory, located in HuBei, will start in March with Superior Spas products being moved from the current manufacturer to the firm’s own factory over the course of the next 12 months. The company’s full range of Platinum and Swim Spas will be taken in-house. To find out more visit the team on stand C66 at SPATEX. Superior Spas 01246 559071 www.superiorspas.co.uk

A Silver (Free) Bullet For Spas Changes to the laws and regulations governing the use of silver in the EU have led to a new introduction to the spa sanitiser market: the SPA FROG Conditioning Cartridge. Designed for use with the SPA FROG Bromine Cartridge, it was launched by its exclusive distributor Golden Coast in spring 2018 as a replacement to the popular SPA FROG Mineral Cartridge. The decision follows changes made to meet the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) requirements, under article 95 (1) of the Biocidal Products Regulation (BPR). “Making the switch to anything new can be daunting however; this isn’t a ‘new’ product. In fact, it’s been available in the busy North American marketplace for several years, where it’s proven

itself time and time again… so much so that it’s now the global standard,” said Golden Coast Managing Director Jamie Adams. Suitable for hot tubs up to 2,271 gallons, the SPA FROG Conditioning Cartridge gives water a softer feel, maintains a neutral pH and polishes the water for absolute clarity. Cartridges work with the SPA FROG complete water care system, last four full months and are supplied pre-filled, removing the risk of mess, guess or stress. Jamie concluded: “For our customers, it offers a seamless transition and confident compliance with the law. What’s more, like every product in our Essentials range of pool and spa accessories, it offers great value.” Golden Coast 01271 378100 www.goldenc.com

Essentials Keeps You Covered… Announcing the latest additions to its extensive Essentials range of spa accessories, Golden Coast has underlined the importance of taking a proactive approach to selling in this highly competitive sector. “When you buy a pair of glasses, you’ll need a case to protect them, too,” said Golden Coast Managing Director Jamie Adams. “And that very same principle applies when owners invest in a hot tub, too. “Each year our team scours the globe for accessories which will really add value to your customers’ hot tubs and, based on our latest additions to this constantly growing range, 2019 looks set to be our most exciting collection yet.” New additions to the collection include the new AirO2 Spa Cover – an inflatable cover system

which is a ‘game changer’ in the replacement spa market. Jamie explained: “Installers will love the AirO2 for its space-saving inflatability – especially when storage comes at a premium. “But customers will love it, too. Uniquely, it cannot absorb water – meaning that opening and closing the cover remains easy, throughout its long life. “As well as making ownership easy, it makes it cheaper, too. Because the AirO2 maintains its insulation value for the life of the cover, this reduces heat and water loss, while keeping the spa easily accessible.” The AirO2 benefits from high-quality construction. “The AirO2 benefits from drop-stitch production – ensuring it will outlast traditional spa covers.” The AirO2 Spa Cover features a contemporary fabric skin in a

Wellis Launch New Rio Grande 2019 Swim Spa The new Rio Grande 2019 is the result of a long period of development. It is a perfect combination of a whole spa for the health of soul and a powerful, finely tuned fitness machine for improving swimming endurance. The incorporated spa is the same as the company’s popular Malaga 2018 – already wellknown in the spa market. It is equipped with a waterfall and 3 laminar jets which makes for a relaxing atmosphere and which provide a great visual effect. Forty massage jets are responsible for an amazing massage experience and 50 sqf filter for the cleanest water. The new model opens up a unique home spa experience for everyone and features the most innovative technology combined with uncompromising quality. This latest Rio Grande can deliver twice as much water against traditional types, 180 m3/h. The width of the water flow is now 50-60 cm. The difference between water flow directions and the centre line of the spa is 0°, therefore swimming is perfectly balanced.

Mechanical elements are separated from the hydro-space, so any mechanical repairs can be done without sluicing the water. The Rio Grande 2019 swim spa will be available with semi-cabinet, making it possible to sink the spa halfway in the ground without any concrete preparation. The heat pump connection in the swim spa is fixed and equipped with an In.Grid system – consequently, the heating cost can be reduced to onethird of the electrical heating. Both zones of the swim spa – massage and the swim – can be separately controlled with the in.touch2 application and a self-drain function means that the swim half can be drained by the circulation pump – 10 m3 in just 33 minutes. Fluidra To Provide Competition Facilities For Malaysian Games

Polin Introduces A Clear World First As an official R&D centre and a pioneer in the field of innovative advancement and application of closed-molded manufacturing technology in waterslide development, Polin Waterparks continues to focus on innovation in composites manufacturing technologies. Based in Turkey, the core of the company’s R&D strategy is its concentration on financial, customer and process perspectives with particular emphasis on learning, dissemination and innovation. Polin proved its dedication to these aspects of R&D when the company pioneered the advancement and application of light resin transfer molding (LRTM) in waterslide manufacturing. In 2006, it converted 100% of its fibreglass production to LRTM, a first in the aquatic-attractions industry. This development raised the bar

for the entire waterpark industry. Since then, Polin has regularly introduced new innovations, including the development of special lighting effects, patterned and transparent composites, sound-integrated components, wooden and metallic finishes, three-dimensional waterslides and unique slide designs. As a result of Polin’s dedication to innovation, the industry meets the first fully transparent composites waterslide, satisfying the need for a better quality, functional, price-advantaged solution compared to the transparent acrylic components that are typically seen in cruise projects. Ali Cansun, Director of R&D said: “As a pioneer of the amusement industry, we are proud to announce Glassy Waterslide which will make dynamic difference in the industry.”

Fluidra, the multinational, Spanish-listed company focused on developing innovative products, services and IoT solutions for the residential and commercial pool markets globally, will provide the competition and diving pools at the 20th Sukma Games in Malaysia. The project consists of the renovation of one competition pool (50.1 x 20.9 m) and one diving pool (28 x 22 m). The popular biannual Malaysian national multisport championships will attract some 3,000 athletes, officials and volunteers and will be held in June 2020. Fluidra will renovate the existing pools at the Aquatic Center in Johor Bahru using the Skypool short panel system for competition pools. This system enables existing facilities to be adapted to the requirements of the International Swimming Federation safely, quickly and efficiently. It will also be responsible for the competition equipment, filtration and disinfection of the pools. The contract has been awarded following Fluidra´s recent success as the pool supplier for the 19th Sukma Games held in September 2018 and adds to its extensive presence at aquatic competitions across Asia. Fluidra designed and installed pools for the 2018 Asian Games (Jakarta and Palembang, Indonesia) and 2017 World University Games, Taipei (Taiwan). They will also supply the upcoming 13th PORA Games (Jantho, Indonesia) in 2019. Fluidra was also recently awarded the contract to design and install an Olympic swimming pool for the 2019 Pan American Games in Lima (Peru). In Spain, Fluidra was responsible for designing and building the Olympic pool used in the swimming and water polo competitions at the 2018 Mediterranean Games in Tarragona.

Dubai-based MAK Pools To Hold Expo Based in Dubai, Silver Fox Group is one of the UAE’s oldest and most well-established swimming pool construction and landscaping firms. Being sole distributors of world-renowned pool related products, Silver Fox sought to bring those very brands to different markets in the UAE. So in 2008, MAK Pools was created to provide high-end equipment and supplies to other pool companies, schools, hotels and various different industries within the country. Owned by the Somji family, key elements in MAK Pools’ success have been the quality of service and products offered. Each department is run by a member of the family, ensuring that client expectations are always met. Furthermore, there is a consistent marketing strategy that constantly adapts to meet a target audience’s

changing wants and needs. MAK Pools have always concentrated in educating the market of each brand they offer and how each product can add value to their client’s experience. In line with their vision to develop a better understanding of their brands within the local market, MAK Pools is holding an Expo on 19 February 2019 at the Jumeirah Zabeel Saray Hotel in Dubai. The event has speakers from key brands being represented, travelling from Spain, France, and the UK. This Expo is by invitation only and is

geared towards the pool and spa industry, hotels, schools, facilities management and water parks. The turnout is expected to be between 60–75 attendees with a day packed with presentations by Ezarri (Spanish glass mosaics), Saci (water pumps), Maytronics (pool robots), Piscimar (specialised water treatment chemicals) and Aligator Systems (chlorine-free pools). The event will begin at 9:00am with the registration of the attendees and then run through to 3:30pm with a lavish luncheon provided by MAK Pools. MAK Pools is considering making the Expo event biennial – each time aiming to cater to different market segments within the UAE and other GCC countries. MAK Pools +971 (4) 323 2958 www.makpools.com

Exhibition Rides The Waves Of A Thriving Sector! The Piscine Global Europe exhibition took place from 13 to 16 November in Lyon and for the latest edition, the industry-leading event decided resolutely to shift its focus towards the pool lifestyle, design and innovation. It reasserted its position as the benchmark exhibition for the pool and wellness sector and remains the biennial event many exhibitors cannot afford to miss. Post-event statistics revealed that the 2018 edition brought together 629 exhibitors (+5.4%) from the entire pool and spa sector in more than 28,000 net sqm of floor space. The number of professional visitors rose 7.11% compared to the previous show, reaching 19,845. In addition to discussions with exhibitors, visitors had opportunities to attend a host of events tailored to meet their expectations. Close to 30 seminars were organised on topics ranging from market intelligence to the latest trends.

“I am delighted with this edition of Piscine Global Europe, both from a commercial viewpoint, with very high satisfaction regarding the calibre of visitors, and in terms of the atmosphere at the exhibition, with lots of fruitful discussions and networking. The business climate is strong. I also see a new area of focus developing around the pool renovation sector. The market trends that stood out during this year’s show concern renovation but also feature-packed small pools and wellness products proposed as add-on sales. “We organisers are delighted with the support we have received from the entire profession, particularly via the participation of our partner, the FPP, but also from the specialised press and the federations who attended the show. Last but not least, I should like to thank the exhibitors for their continuing loyalty to the sector’s leading event,” underlined Noémi Petit, Managing Director of Piscine Global Europe.

Center Parcs Set To Open Ireland’s Largest Waterpark Irish mother and son Lego artist duo unveil the 55,667 brick model that showcases all that Ireland’s largest waterpark will offer Irish families. Center Parcs is set to make a splash in Ireland this year and has revealed plans for Ireland’s first ever Subtropical Swimming Paradise. The new forest resort in Longford, is due to open its doors in summer 2019 and is set to transform family getaways. The facility will be Ireland’s largest waterpark and promises to offer families a slice of paradise in the heart of the island. Heated to 29.5oC all year round and nestled amongst lush green tropical plants, the 3,500m2 Subtropical Swimming Paradise will provide endless hours of fun for all the family. To mark the reveal, Center Parcs teamed up with

internationally renowned Lego artists, mother and son duo Jessica and Faolán Farrell from Rathangan, Co. Kildare, to create a show-stopping Lego replica of the Subtropical Swimming Paradise. The amazingly detailed 2m x 1.5m Lego model took 105 days to build and uses 55,667 Lego bricks. It perfectly showcases what the wet leisure facility will offer Irish families when it opens its doors. Guests will be able to take a dip in a large family wave pool, tackle Wild Water Rapids, make a splash in the children’s water play areas or relax in the tranquil whirlpools. The indoor waterpark will come complete with 350m of adrenaline-charged rides and flumes suitable for all ages.

The deal values Latham at US$375m. Headquartered in Latham, NY, the company is a leading manufacturer of pool components and accessories in North America. The company’s product offering includes fibreglass pools, automatic safety covers, in-ground vinyl pool liners, polymer and steel pool wall systems and other related accessories. POOL & SPA INDUSTRY

Happy New Year! With an important new year upon us, BSPF Managing Director Chris Hayes touches on training and standards, plus looks at what’s happening in the weeks and months ahead

2

019 is going to be a monumental year, as the outcome of Brexit unfolds and we must be ready to work in partnership and to harness the opportunities that present themselves. Whatever way you voted back in the 2016 Referendum and whatever your thoughts about the negotiation process, it is important that we work with our national government to ensure that business can be conducted as efficiently as possible so that we can continue to provide wet leisure opportunities for our commercial and domestic customers. The year is going to be kick-started by SPATEX, and the quality of the exhibitors looks to be as high as ever. The education programme at the three-day exhibition continues to provide opportunities for the trade to learn about technical items through the ISPE programme, as well as other topics of interest from other industry bodies such as the STA, Institute of Swimming and PWTAG. The entertainment (via the annual Industry Gala Evening and the SPATEX Party) is again waiting to dazzle! The Industry Gala Evening features the 2019 British Pool & Hot Tub Awards and the re-presentation of the 2018 ISPE Awards. The awards evening promises to be an exciting chance to see who will be the BISHTA and SPATA winners and a huge thank you to all of the sponsors for supporting this event. Winners of these awards are eligible to be entered into the 2019 European Pool and Spa Awards, to be held by EUSA at Aquanale in Cologne, in

November 2019. There will also be a breakfast session in seminar room two (during SPATEX) from 8.30am – 9.30am on Thursday 31 January, aimed at updating the industry about some of the changes that are going to be influencing us, so come along and hear all about it! The European standard for domestic spas and hot tubs (BS EN 17125) is going to be available, and this standard is a result of the close co-operation of a number of countries and other partners providing additional experts to ensure the development of this standard, all coordinated via BISHTA and with the support of colleagues in the German Standards Institute (DIN). All of the experts should be very proud of what they have achieved, and so on behalf of BISHTA I would like to say a massive ‘thank you’ to all of the experts (especially those representing the UK – Patrick Thorpe, Howard Gosling, Charlotte Alexander, Jatinder Sidhu, Mike McCague and Nathan Coelho). As a direct result of the new European standard, the BISHTA Standards have also been modified with a 2019 version shortly to be made available. The BISHTA Standards have been updated to reflect the significant changes arising from BS EN 17125 and HSG 282, with lots more guidance that is not necessarily covered by the other two documents above. Both BISHTA and SPATA aim to support their respective members with relevant information and advice, so please read pages 36 and 37, as there is a feature on some of these services provided to members. My thanks to all of those members who kindly provided information for this article, and after you have read it, I trust that it will serve as a handy reminder of the benefits for existing members and it should also be a useful summary for companies that

are prospective members. This year should also see a vast range of courses available for the industry and the article on page 38 outlines the importance of Continuing (or Continuous) Professional Development (CPD). Having recently hosted a liner course in Andover, the feedback was very positive, and another liner course is being held on Wednesday 6 March (again in Andover). Also held in Andover recently was a Dangerous Goods course and this is vital for anyone dealing with the transport or storage of items that are deemed Dangerous Goods. There was lots of practical advice such as ensuring that small vans carry an in-date 2kg fire extinguisher in case of an engine fire, so please watch out for course dates and ensure that you send at least one representative on the course to cascade the information to the rest of your staff. Finally, BISHTA and SPATA work with its members to ensure that they work to industry standards and also abide by the Code of Ethics. It is crucial that members achieve both and membership is based on this ongoing commitment. It is also something that prospective members need to be able to demonstrate when applying for membership. Have a great 2019!

What Can BISHTA And SPATA Offer Your Business? In this article, we highlight a number of the benefits and services that are available to existing BISHTA and SPATA members or that may be of interest to prospective members. As you’ll see, there are numerous advantages to membership!

T

he role of BISHTA and SPATA is to help members to be able to focus on managing their day-to-day business arrangements when there are so many potential distractions that can get in the way! Trade Associations provide many benefits, and

Recommendations For Work “New enquiries are generated by SPATA, either through a potential client calling the association and being referred to us or indirectly from SPATA`s promotional efforts. SPATA`s pertinacious activities on behalf of the membership help to maintain our industry`s high profile and professional image. An example is the British Pool & Hot Tub Awards, promoted through activities such as localised editorials for award winners, which are propagated through various press and media, further highlighting this positive message. The awards are also covered in the numerous industry trade publications which further enhances the profile of the industry and particularly the trade associations members. Many of our contacts are procured via personal recommendation but notwithstanding this, those prospects will note our SPATA membership and will most likely check out the Association`s website, for reassurance”. Michael Cormacey – Director at Aqua Blue Designs

Safeguarding Your Money Most businesses will at some point have a client that is concerned about making payment to you and so a free service is available, called the ‘Stakeholder Account’. This service can be used to help your client pay any monies into a ring-fenced client account. As the member, you know that whenever you have completed the agreed work as per the signed document with your client, then SPATA will be able to seek confirmation that payment can be released. “We are regular users of the SPATA Stakeholder account not only to protect us, but also to give our clients peace of mind. We find that for clients who have been stung in the past, the suggestion of using a 3rd party from your accredited trade association, not only gives them peace of mind but gives you additional credibility”. Alex Kemsley – Managing Director at Waterstream

just a few of them are outlined below by some of the members in this article. Whether you are an existing member, or a company looking to join BISHTA and/or SPATA, please read on to see how your business can benefit from Trade Association membership.

Keeping Up With The Standards

“Poorly maintained spas at a public event in Holland and Belgium in 1999 caused an outbreak of Legionnaires’ disease that sadly resulted in a significant loss of life. It was decided that action must be taken to prevent a similar occurrence here. As a result in 2001, a meeting was arranged by the UK’s leading importers/manufacturers to form an association to both help prevent similar occurrences and to promote safe water through training. In May 2002 it was agreed to affiliate with the BSPF – BISHTA was formed and registered. I was proud to be one of the five founder members, Chairman from 2004 until 2007 and instrumental in setting up the technical committee that went on to play a leading part in the production of the HSE, HPA management of spa pools. BISHTA has and continues to be a leading force in promoting and maintaining the best spa and hot tub safety standards in the world. Furthermore, I believe instrumental in the fact the majority of our industry maintain high moral standards and safety procedures”. Stephen Crabb MISPE – Managing Director at Catalina Spas Ltd

A Warm Welcome And On-going Support “Being a newcomer to the wet leisure industry, the benefits of the SPATA membership have been absolutely invaluable. Having found myself within an industry that is far from my own professional background, with the challenge of continuing Merlin Pools after my late father’s 40 years of trade, I have welcomed the endless avenues and opportunities that have been available to me through the membership. Developing a strong network facility and utilising the tools available to me through the SPATA members’ area on the website has provided answers and direction with any queries or concerns, and has enabled me to understand relevant and up to date standards and legislation. The welcome from Chris Hayes has been overwhelming, always available for a chat, reassurance and advice”. Sophy Rhodes – Managing Director at Merlin Leisure Pools Ltd

BISHTA’s Workforce Qualifications To ‘Promote Safe Hot Tub Standards’ The Standards and training set by BISHTA are arguably one of the best in the world. As BISHTA’s logo strapline highlights, the association’s principal focus is to ‘Promote Safe Hot Tub Standards’ providing consumers with a clear route to buy with confidence from BISHTA members. There is a range of courses available, such as water hygiene management and the carriage of dangerous goods that are either provided directly through BISHTA or may be available from other parties. These types of courses need regular (2 – 3 years) refresher training to ensure knowledge is updated. Courses are available across the country; please contact BISHTA head office for details in your local area. “It is a huge responsibility, looking after a tub which is being used by the public, and for many of the delegates the guidelines

Supporting Members With Technical Advice Members can ask for advice, and it is usually free of charge. BISHTA and SPATA both have technical specialists, as well as the committees to call upon to support members. It can often be the case that Members themselves have some specialist knowledge and it is always welcome if this can be shared with other Members. BISHTA and SPATA aim to get timely advice to its members to support their businesses. “Keeping our owners and customers safe is always our top priority – that’s why we are delighted to be working alongside BISHTA to give our park and property owners the best possible advice and guidance and promote the highest hot tub standards across our brands. The BISHTA team’s knowledge and expertise are invaluable, especially when it comes to the use of domestic hot tubs in a business environment – it’s a complex subject, and they have already helped us with a number of technical queries”. Sharon Duquemin – Head of Health & Safety at Vacation Rentals (UK) Ltd / Hoseasons

and recommendations are a surprise, but by the end of the course they are fully aware of what’s required to fulfill their health and safety obligations. The BISHTA accredited course, ‘Hot Tub and Swim Spa Water Hygiene Management’, continues to be popular with over 400 successful delegates so far. Attendees range from sales staff and engineers from multi-national and independent retailers to holiday park operators and property owners who are renting out a hot tub as part of a holiday let”. Martin Rigby – Regional Sales Manager at Complete Pool Controls Ltd

Maximising The Business Services “As a distributor handling and promoting a wide range of products from multiple suppliers, it is crucial that we have good access to the standards and regulations that impact on our industry so the best decisions can be made. The services and contacts which SPATA provide are invaluable when it comes to accessing this type of information. The SPATA group membership agreement with BSOL (British Standards Online) offers essential access to the most relevant current European and British standards and is used very regularly by Certikin. Similarly, we also find great value and support through the Primary Authority Partnership SPATA hold with Hampshire Trading Standards – this helps by centralising both direct advice on specific topics and general business trading advice at SPATA meetings. The value for money provided by just these two services is untouchable when compared to sourcing the same pieces of information directly”. Neil Stephenson – Product Development Manager at Certikin International

Marketing Advice And Support

Help At The End Of Your Fingertips – 24-7

“Being part of BISHTA is an excellent resource tool for our marketing. BISHTA regularly update members through their weekly email-newsletter with industry information that can be used in our marketing activity, such as key industry facts and figures, latest press updates and industry news. Furthermore, having BISHTA specialists on hand to call when you need help and guidance whenever it’s needed is great for business. Being a member of such a prestigious association such as BISHTA is great for publicity, as they are a very well respected and reputable organisation, this helps to drive more awareness through our marketing activity. Being the only UK manufacturer of hot tubs, it is excellent to be involved with the industry regularly as well as attend the fantastic networking opportunities, such as the annual Wet Leisure Industry Gala evening which hosts the British Pool & Hot Tub Awards to celebrate the industries’ successes”. Charlotte Hotchin – Marketing Coordinator at RotoSpa

In the spring of 2018, the SPATA and BISHTA websites got a great new look to make the sites even more user-friendly for consumers. As well as the ‘front end’ work to the websites the ‘back end’ work was completed to help with Search Engine Optimisation (SEO). “A short time ago I needed some information that was only available on the SPATA website. So, I visited the SPATA website and wow! I thought I had the wrong site, but no, it was the new SPATA website and what a joy it was to navigate. I found what I needed and even more than I expected in the dedicated SPATA Members Area of the site. It was so easy to navigate, and everything was at the end of my fingertips, Standards, Factsheets, News, British Standards, Marketing Tools just about everything except the kitchen sink. Thank you SPATA for the revamped site – it is brilliant”. Ben Studdy – Business Development Manager at Fairlocks Pool Products Ltd

We want to give thanks to the BISHTA and SPATA members involved in this article for their feedback. Being a trade association member stands as a badge of endorsement that can help to bring many advantages, recognising businesses that uphold industry standards and who are willing to abide by a Code of Ethics. Members are also able to play their part in helping these industry bodies to be the voice of the wet leisure industry with government officials and other key decision-makers at home and abroad.

Investing In Your Workforce In this edition, the BSPF’ takes a closer look at a number of the training options that are available for staff operating in various sectors across the wet leisure industry

T

here is a real need to ensure that companies can invest in their workforce so that they are best equipped to undertake their work efficiently and to the current standards and guidance. Investment in training is a way of retaining staff, as they will feel capable of fulfilling their role to the maximum of their ability. SPATA has been encouraging its members to undertake Continuous (or Continuing) Professional Development (CPD) for the last two years; this is to reinforce the CPD being undertaken by individual members of the ISPE. The training can take many forms, but the aim is to encourage a desire for learning and a willingness to stay up to date with the latest standards, guidance and product innovations that are available. In terms of SPATA members, attendance at the annual information and networking day is an obvious way of keeping updated, as are the regional meetings. In addition, SPATEX provides a unique way of combining education and product updates from exhibitors, and there are other industry events, training seminars and qualifications as ways of gaining CPD points. The aim is for each SPATA member company to be able to achieve a minimum of ten hours CPD per year. For small companies, this might be more challenging than for larger companies, but it is meant to be achievable. For larger companies, they will far exceed the ten hours per year; this figure is a simple target. There are many pool courses and qualifications available, including Pool Plant Operations (PPO) – a course run by a range of providers including STA that have a nationally accredited PPO qualification. The ISPE home study packs provide a strong base for learning key topics such as construction, filtration, heating and water chemistry. The Institute has been revamping all of their packs, and they also run workshops on filtration.

36 February 2019 SPN 38_SPN_Feb_19_CPD_Training.indd 36

SPATA has been working with some of its members to answer a call-to-action from the ISPE for the industry to provide more lowcost / no-cost training. A heat pump course has been developed with the help of Calorex, and Certikin International has piloted it. There has also been a very successful pilot of a liner course, thanks to the hard work of Aquaflex, Certikin International and Plastica. The first course had 19 attendees and the feedback was very positive, with some suggested changes that will be included in the next course being held on Wednesday 6 March 2019 in Andover. Details of other course dates and venues will be subject to demand. A sauna and steam course is being piloted by Golden Coast on Tuesday 26 February 2019; please contact either Golden Coast or SPATA if you wish to attend this course or to go on a waiting list for future sauna and steam courses. BISHTA is also encouraging its members to undertake a minimum of ten hours of CPD per company. The growing number of courses as well as the events and exhibitions on offer including water hygiene management, dangerous goods, electrical courses, hot tub site surveyor and the Certified Hot Tub Installer (CHTT), with each course providing a different aspect of the vital work undertaken

by staff to ensure that products are installed correctly and safely. The water hygiene management course has various tutors able to deliver it, with an excess of 600 candidates trained by the tutor teams over the past couple of years. This course is a pre-requisite for BISHTA membership and attendance at the Dangerous Goods course is also expected for anyone that is transporting / storing ‘Dangerous Goods’ (those products with a UN number listed on the Safety Data Sheet). The Dangerous Goods training course is designed for a staff member to attend and then cascade the information learned to the rest of their team. Therefore providing a better understanding of what needs to be done to comply with the regulations regarding packing materials with the correct labelling, in suitable sizes and being sent by authorised carriers. The electrical course has so far trained over 90 people and this partnership is with the well respected electrical contracting organisation – NICEIC. The course can be undertaken as a two-day workshop, or a three-day certified qualification and course participants are made aware that the course is the only current way of non-qualified electricians showing their competence to be able to make the final connection to a hot tub. The course covers essential health and safety matters, such as safe isolation and also how to inspect, test and certificate the hot tub. The course does not permit the successful candidates to undertake any wiring of the hot tub from the consumer unit. The CHTT and the Hot Tub Site Surveyor courses provide other opportunities for gaining invaluable training for technicians and other staff respectively. The training of personnel in the hot tub industry is also going to be supplemented with the development of training courses for holiday park staff, and it is hoped to develop training materials for Environmental Health Officers (EHOs) before the end of the year.

STA POOL PLANT – SWIM SCHOOL POOL

A Pool In A Car Park – Is This The Future?

In this edition, Luke Griffiths, Qualification Development Manager (Pool Plant) at STA’s awarding organisation Safety Training Awards highlights an unusual pool build project and the challenges it posed for those involved with it

I

t’s SPATEX time; a time when the industry gets together to share new ideas and developments for the coming year. On this theme, Luke Griffiths from STA’s awarding organisation Safety Training Awards, recently went to visit a new swimming pool build, which has uniquely been located within a multi-storey car park He spoke to the pool owner Prakash Patel, plant installer Chris Elsom and pool consultant Martyn Hardy, who is presenting at STA’s pool plant conference at SPATEX about this extraordinary build in the centre of Bolton.

The Swimming Pool Owner – Mr Prakash Patel, Splish Splash Time

WHAT MADE YOU WANT TO BUILD AND OWN YOUR OWN POOL? I have for a long time identified that the provision of suitable fit for purpose pool facilities to deliver swimming programmes of various levels is poor and needed addressing, especially from my perspective in the Bolton area. Although the project was difficult and a major financial commitment, I know in the long term the facility will become a central hub of activity and a place where young children will develop fantastic new skills, and where parents will benefit from socialising and supporting each other.

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO CHOOSE A MULTI-STOREY CAR PARK AS A VENUE?

and changing rooms, insulating the building to minimise heat loss and making decisions on materials that would last in a swimming pool environment. These are all areas that are not customer facing so are not aesthetically pleasing, but as I have experienced since becoming operational, they have been essential in ensuring we have a venue that can be easily maintained and cleaned.

WHAT WAS THE MOST ENJOYABLE THING ABOUT THE PROJECT? Watching a space that most people thought wouldn’t work, transform into the space that always surprises people when they walk in. I work in construction and the project tested my skills too, which is something I enjoyed.

WHAT WOULD YOU RECOMMEND TO ANYONE LOOKING TO DO SOMETHING SIMILAR? Understand why you want to do the project and what the long-term aim is. The planning and design stage is essential to success. Research the team you need to help with the build. A venue is a massive commitment and requires additional skills with regards to understanding maintenance, quality control and managing personnel – in addition to the specialist technical skills required around designing a safe swimming pool and plant facility. My main advice is to get the correct, professional advice before embarking on a project of this type.

I agree it’s not a natural choice! When viewing the space for the first time all that I could see were car park pillars and a small office where the previous owners kept their paperwork. The venue itself is unusual but that was part of the appeal, because it lends itself to an industrial look and I wanted the venue to have a design that was different to any other swimming pool that I’ve seen. As we have families with younger children, I also wanted the convenience of being able to park undercover and just outside the facility, so I could make the experience easier.

Operational staff have completed either the STA Level 3 Award in Pool Plant Operations or the STA Level 2 Award in Swimming Pool Water Treatment. These qualifications have expanded their knowledge base in terms of operating pools, and they also have the benefit of the Pool Oracle consultancy service to support them in their daily operational practices.

WHAT CHALLENGES DID YOU OVERCOME?

The Pool Consultant – Martyn Hardy, Pool Oracle

The biggest challenge was ensuring all the structural design and build was to a standard that could support long term use. Making sure the drainage was adequate for the pool

In my opinion, the main unique feature is where this facility is located. There are many

YOU TALK ABOUT THE POOL PLANT FACILITY, WHAT POOL PLANT TRAINING HAVE YOU COMPLETED AND HOW HAS IT HELPED?

projects out there looking at converting industrial units, retail outlets and public houses to name a few, but to put a leisure facility in the basement of a multi-storey car park shows a tremendous vision as far as the client, Mr Patel, is concerned. Another unique feature is the stainless steel tank. I have seen many of these constructions utilised in a hydro-pool environment, but to construct an 11.5 metre x 5.5 metre swimming pool (pool size was restricted by the support pillars in the basement) again shows tremendous vision by Mr Patel. It also contributes massively in providing a unique selling point in promoting the facility. No re-lining or tiling issues with this pool tank, therefore resulting in a greatly reduced maintenance budget long term.

WHAT WERE THE KEY ASPECTS OF THE DESIGN FOR YOU? My main focus has been on working with Mr Patel and the contractors to create what I term a “box within a box concept”. Many projects have open aspects to their buildings with changing areas for example being open to the poolside, but this can create issues with regulating air temperatures and air changes within these areas. By sealing/ containing the pool area and making it standalone, will greatly assist in controlling and maintaining temperatures with the additional aid of technology. Believe it or not, the control of the air temperature and humidity is just as important as maintaining a suitable operational water temperature, especially if you want to create a building that will have a long life expectancy. Operationally and due to the nature of the

WHAT ARE THE PROJECT’S UNIQUE FEATURES?

STA POOL PLANT – SWIM SCHOOL POOL clients using the facility, it was key that the plant specification could potentially handle any situation that arose within the pool. It was also key that it was simplistic in its operation. Working with CJE Leisure Ltd on this we have established a system which some might say has been over specified in terms of the size of the pool, but having worked in the leisure industry for over 35 years and worked with under specified systems, mainly due to cost, I am a firm believer that a well specified system which is simple to operate is well worth investing in.

WHAT WERE THE TIMESCALES? From the outset Mr Patel set a 12 month time frame! Which bearing in mind the type of building we were refurbishing, and therefore essentially having to make sure the integrity of the structural design was “fit for purpose” in terms of transformation from car park to leisure facility along with the massive drainage and insulation requirements, the whole team in my opinion has performed admirably in delivering this project on time.

WHAT IS YOUR ADVICE TO ANYONE INTERESTED IN DOING A SIMILAR PROJECT? My main advice would be to establish a good working/project group with the skill set and vision to deliver. Too many times we see projects hitting barriers which can, in a lot of cases, be traced back to the implementation of the wrong project team members in the first place. With this project, given its complexity and the variety of skill-sets required, we did face some unforeseen issues along the way with contractors especially, but as anyone knows who has been involved in construction projects, these things happen and the test of the team is how they respond. The main point is that the facility has been delivered and the client is happy and realised his ambition. I’m proud to say that it looks absolutely fabulous and will deliver on its main aim of providing children in the Bolton area with a a state of the art facility in which they can learn one of the most important life skills – the ability to swim. Which is the one sport that has the potential to be a true lifesaver.

The Pool Plant Installer – Chris Elsom, CJE Leisure Ltd

WERE THERE ANY UNIQUE HURDLES TO OVERCOME WITH THE CHOSEN LOCATION OF THE FACILITY? Access was a major issue, especially getting the Environment Unit from road side to the desired location; the ceilings are really low and we had just millimetres to spare. In addition because there was no drainage, a channel had to be cut through the reinforced concrete floor to lay the backwash pipe work – and the floor was so hard, the first diamond cutter didn’t even touch the surface, so a heavier duty one had to be hired.

www.swimmingpoolnews.co.uk 40-41_SPN_Feb_19_STA.indd 39

Swimming pool space for swim schools is sparse and highly competitive, so we must applaud Mr Patel’s vision for building a pool facility in this most unusual, but perfectly central city location” Piping up from the plant room around the pool also needed some thought, as the car park had various concrete pillars supporting the floors above that had to be piped around.

WHAT POOL CHEMICALS WERE CHOSEN AND WHY? We wanted to choose chemicals that were relatively safe and easy to use, but taking into account incoming water supplies. In the pool industry, there are numerous incidents involving the wrong chemicals going into the wrong chemical day tanks, producing chlorine gas resulting in major chemical incidents involving the emergency services. Mixing granular chlorine with water in day tanks also has its issues – concentrations of mixtures in day tanks being too weak or too strong resulting in blocked injectors, hoses being left in day tanks whilst topping resulting in flooding of plant rooms – and we wanted to reduce this risk as far as practically possible. After careful consideration it was agreed that pH correction carbon dioxide would be used and the supplier of the Co2 would deliver the cylinders direct to site and couple up to the regulators, thus reducing manual handling for staff. For disinfection, we chose sodium hypochlorite, which is decanted from the

carboys directly into the day tank; it is around 14-15% so the concentration in the day tank remains constant within reason. Injectors tend to block less, and as a rule no sludge gathers in the bottom of the tank blocking foot valves.

WHAT AREAS OF THE PROJECT ARE YOU MOST PLEASED WITH? With the available space we had to install the pool plant, we were able to place pumps, filters etc, in a logical layout for the operators to understand. We laid the plant out in one ‘single line’ i.e. pumps, filters, heating, resulting in minimum pipe work runs. This also reduced the amount of elbows and fittings that hinder flow rates. In all too many cases we come across plant rooms, where pumps are on one side of the room and filters the other side, which can add to confusion for operators in term of the flow of water and pipe runs. Commenting on the project, Luke said: “This is a fantastic, state-of-the-art swimming pool facility. Swimming pool space for swim schools is sparse and highly competitive, so we must applaud Mr Patel’s vision for building a pool facility in this most unusual, but perfectly central city location – with a good team it shows what can be achieved, and could developments like this be the future for commercial swimming pool construction in the UK – it’s definitely one way!” SPN Safety Training Awards 01922 645097 www.safetytrainingawards.co.uk Splish Splash Time 01204 803700 www.splishsplashtime.co.uk Safety Training Awards will also be hosting their annual Pool Plant conference at SPATEX 2019, where Luke and Martyn will be presenting along with STA’s Pool Plant Consultant’ Robbie Phillips.

MANUFACTURED IN THE UK

UK Made Pool Panel System Incorporates ‘Green’ Credentials In this edition, we take a look at HeatForm, a new pool panel system available from Devon-based distributor Lighthouse. It’s a versatile product that offers flexibility and time saving benefits to pool builders whilst playing its part in protecting the environment too!

O

n closer inspection, it quickly becomes apparent that the HeatForm panel system from Lighthouse has a few tricks up its sleeve, tricks that will impress and help even the most savvy of pool builders. Setting its standards well above many other panel pool systems available on the market today, HeatForm is a panel system that doesn’t cost the Earth!

ENERGY COSTS SLASHED HeatForm has transformed the construction process, not only making it quicker, easier and simpler to build the ‘poolbasin’, but with the added value of insulation. The product is designed to keep those expensive heating bills to a minimum while reducing the amount of energy lost into the surrounding environment. The HeatForm insulated panel pool can save up to 50% of heating costs compared to a standard concrete pool.

SAVING THE PLANET HeatForm helps the environment by using empty plastic (PET) bottles to form the insulated section of the pool wall. Each panel core is made from 100% post consumer (recycled) PET material. This ‘green’ foam core, while meeting stringent technical requirements, helps to preserve and enhance the human environment by: • Reducing the amount of energy being wasted through heat loss • Following the guidelines for circular economy – ensuring a fully recyclable product.

• The 1m and 1.5m panels allow skimmer placement where they are needed • Easy adjustable bracing bars ensures the panels remain vertical. The 90mm thick panel allows them to be positioned and bolted quickly. Once adjustments are made to square and straighten the pool wall system, the completed pool has a sturdy feel. The use of bag liner or onsite lining is easy and can be started as soon as the last bolt is tightened, meaning the build time for the pool is drastically reduced. The panels are manufactured in the UK on the south coast and the smooth, clean gelcoat finish on the panel’s surface ensures that once lined, the completed pool has a professional look that will impress pool users every time. With panels starting at 0.5m long, the HeatForm panel system allows the creation of

BRITISH BY DESIGN HeatForm’s clever inverta-panel design ensures that there is always a filtration fitting where it is needed. The 1m and 1.5m panels have skimmer and inlet indents, whilst the 0.5m and 2.5m filler panels allow filtration requirements to be easily adjusted to suit the flow requirements of the pool’s design, reducing installation time and costs. HeatForm’s main benefits include: • All panels are easily bolted together, fixed, aligned and secured • Encapsulated patented insulation help Part-L compliant U-values are met • Simple foam knockouts allow for easy inlet and light positioning

a pool to suit any garden size – from plunge pools (2m x 2m), exercise pools (4m x 2m), domestic fun pools (7m x 3.5m) – right up to a school pool for commercial use (25m x 8m). The system allows flexibility for each pool to be built and adjusted to suit any design within a 500mm increment. Additional extras can be designed into the structure to suit the requirements of the user. A slatted cover from Lighthouse partner Rollo-Solar adds quality and safety to the pool – from the deep water bench under water housing or if a beach is required, a shallow water bench can make a nice alternative. Of course, there is always the retro fit option of the above-ground housing in electric or solar, and three stylish housing options are available. A Zodiac filtration suite is a great way to design and build a one brand plant room, with the option of single or variable speed pumps, sand filters, chlorination and automation that works with smart devices. New for 2019 there is the Z400 smart air source heat pump to complement the inverter driven fan and compressor on the popular ZS500. Not to mention the new nicheless inlet lights available in white or RGBW. Whatever the size of pool required, HeatForm has the panels to make any dream pool a reality and puts exercise, fun and relaxation within easy reach of any lifestyle and budget. TURBIDITY

The Clarity Of Pool Water Cloudy swimming pool water is caused by tiny suspended particles within it. Known as turbidity, it can be an issue for both public and domestic pools alike and this issue, experts from pool water testing company Lovibond Tintometer highlight the importance of measuring it

N

o one would disagree that cloudy pool water is undesired. It can have a serious detrimental effect on swimmer safety. It also makes lane markings and items on the pool bottom difficult to see. Impairing the visibility of the pool floor is particularly dangerous if a bather gets into difficulties. According to the National Water Safety Forum, on average, around 400 people tragically drown around the UK every year. Obviously, these numbers include accidents in rivers, lakes and the sea, but there is a significant risk of potential drowning in pools especially for children not yet competent in swimming skills. A struggling swimmer can quickly go under water. It is essential that the lifeguard on duty is able to take appropriate, immediate action. Every second counts for successful rescue, intervention and resuscitation. Cloudy or hazy water is caused by suspended particles that are usually invisible to the naked eye. These impurities are introduced from a variety of sources including, but not limited to, air debris, dirt, pollen, algae, cosmetics and microbial organisms. Unsurprisingly, some of the main contributors to these impurities are bathers

Cloudiness is caused by a rise in turbidity of the pool water. To ensure that the pool is safe, this turbidity must be measured on a regular basis”

and source water. Cloudiness is caused by a rise in turbidity of the pool water. To ensure that the pool is safe, this turbidity must be measured on a regular basis. This is particularly true in the case of public pools although even domestic pool owners should be aware of the potential consequences. In the UK, there are no formal standards for water quality in the swimming pool industry. However, the widely acknowledged PWTAG guidelines suggest the turbidity of pool water should be no greater than 0.5 NTU (Nephlometric Turbidity Units). How many of us, however, really take this seriously? PWTAG also recommends that Turbidity should be measured using a nephelometer, more commonly referred to as a turbidimeter. A turbidimeter is an electronic device which uses the principle that light passing through a substance is reflected or scattered by particulate matter suspended in the substance. Unlike electronic photometers which are commonly used to measure disinfection and pH levels, Turbidity meters simply measure the optical properties of the pool water and do not require any additional reagents. As the image on this page shows, it is difficult for the human eye to distinguish NTU levels below 20, so an electronic device is essential to measure accurately to the PWTAG recommendation. Yet how many pool operators still use the guideline ‘if you can see the bottom of the pool, everything is OK’? And is this really sufficient? Monitoring the turbidity of the pool water is not only essential for bather safety but can also indicate other problems within the pool water chemistry such as inadequate chlorine or, incorrect pH levels. It can also indicate a

change in filtration performance. So why does the turbidity of a pool increase? Poor pool water chemistry – if the chlorine or pH levels are incorrect, the quality of the water will decrease rapidly and cause the turbidity to increase. Furthermore, poor water balance or an increase in levels of TDS (Total Dissolved Solids) and phosphate can affect the cloudiness of the pool. By strictly following best practice for Balanced Water (Langelier Index) and reacting quickly and accordingly, the risk of too turbid water can be greatly reduced, though levels should still be measured. Increased levels in turbidity can also provide an indication of background levels of cryptosporidium though further specific microbiological analysis should be carried out. Filtration problems – today, there are numerous types of various filtration media available including traditional sand, glass and plastic based products all of which claim to reduce the water turbidity. Regulated pump running times and regular filter maintenance will increase effectiveness. However, how do we know they work if the turbidity levels are not being monitored? An increase in turbidity can indicate filter problems including dirty filters, a poor back washing regime or problems with flow rates and sizing. Regular monitoring of turbidity is, therefore, essential: for bather safety; assurance that you are meeting the current guidelines; as an aid to identify problems with water quality before they become too severe; to ensure the filtration set is correct and running efficiently. Lovibond Tintometer 01980 664800 www.lovibond.com “Turbidity is the cloudiness or haziness of a fluid caused by large numbers of individual particles that are generally invisible to the naked eye, similar to smoke in air. The measurement of turbidity is a key test of water quality.” Source: Wikipedia

A MODULAR SWIM SCHOOL POOL

Cresta Leisure Creates Swim School’s First Dedicated Pool In this edition, we focus on a project that saw multiple award-winning SPATA member Cresta Leisure provide a cost-effective, modular swimming pool solution for a Leicestershire-based Swim School

S

teph’s Swim School offers professional swimming lessons in several hotel / leisure centre pools in the Leicester area. All the staff are fully qualified and operate recognised swimming school programmes. They specialise in small classes in warm and friendly environments to encourage children particularly to enjoy their time in the water with confidence. They offer not only group classes but also private lessons for both adults and children. Steph’s Swim School has recently expanded and gained the opportunity to build its own pool and facilities in a former college building in Lutterworth. Being a relatively small, family run business, with limited funds to invest, keeping within budget was one of the critical criteria for this project. Cresta Leisure was approached to build this 10.5 metre by 5 metre pool within the former college building as they had experience of this type of installation. Established in 1986, the company has a wealth of experience in all aspects of swimming pool design, construction, refurbishment and after sales servicing. Cresta operates from purpose-built premises in Dorchester, an ideal facility to provide a comprehensive and professional service for all aspects of the swimming pool and wet leisure business. First of all, Cresta found there were a number of advantages to adapting the pool within this building. The access was excellent with wide doors and corridors and there was a generous amount of space which could be adapted to enable them comfortably to install changing rooms, showers and a spectator viewing area. The building was already equipped with a 3-phase electricity supply and in the area designated for the plant room there were conveniently sited windows to route the ducting.

MODULAR POOL CONSTRUCTION For any commercial client, like Steph’s Swim School, not being able to use the pool for an extended period was a major problem. Cresta had to ensure the build was as quick as possible to avoid excessive ‘down time’.

They therefore opted for a modular pool construction system. Ideal for installations of this nature where a pool is being ‘dropped into’ an existing building and where rapid construction is vital, Cresta identified a unique, free standing modular steel construction – a steel panel system, with a reinforced liner finish. The quality of build technology in this system is high providing a reassuringly strong and robust structure. The beauty of this system is that a commercial pool like this can be built in 15 to 20 days including filtration and dehumidification. Cresta have association with Aquaflex, one of the country’s leading pool liner specialists, so it’s also worth noting that in addition to its standard pool liners which were used in this project, with its range of ‘Touch Elegance’ liners, Aquaflex have moved the appearance and texture of a liner pool on from a more plastic finish to a natural looking texture that allows it to compete with the tiled pool market. The end result, just like Steph’s Swim School pool, is a highly attractive pool with a strong, robust structure, a very short build and installation time giving significant time and cost savings. Needless to say, the client was extremely happy with the whole process where Cresta had kept ‘down time’ to an absolute minimum and came in on time and within budget.

ENVIRONMENTAL CONTROL IS KEY At the heart of all successful pool installations is the environmental control

system ensuring that the pool water and pool room air is heated, ventilated and dehumidified to create a fresh and comfortable environment – all in the most energy efficient way possible. Heatstar is Cresta Leisure’s preferred supplier of environmental control systems and the two companies have an association going back over 25 years. Heatstar designed and installed the environmental control system for the Steph’s Swim School pool. The unit selected for this installation was the XF EC 2000 Super Plus – a high efficiency heat recovery ventilation system. The right system is particularly vital in a swim school pool where a large number of young children and babies are being introduced to the pleasures of safe swimming. For example, the water temperature needs to be maintained at around 29 to 31 degrees constantly for their comfort. Cresta Leisure’s Managing Director Simon Bareham commented that the relationship with Heatstar had started with his father, Chairman and Founder, Tim Bareham. Today, in particular, Simon praised the quality and reliability of Heatstar’s products, the expertise of its in-house Service Engineers and Heatstar’s helpful and responsive staff always ready to help in the unlikely event of queries or problems. ISPE ANNIVERSARY

The ISPE Celebrates Its 40th Anniversary On 15 November 2003, the 25th anniversary dinner of the Institute of Swimming Pool Engineers (ISPE) was held. The inaugural President of the ISPE, John Wilkins, made a short speech outlining the history of the Institute, and as it now celebrates its 40th anniversary, it is useful to be able to re-visit parts of John’s speech and add an update relating to the last 15 years

I

t all came about when a meeting was held in December 1978, to discuss advertising and promotion of the swimming pool industry to the general public. Present were John Wilkins, Fred Brickell, Peter Geekie, Hugh Gibson, Graham Rutherford, John Fowler and Brian McLaughlin and apologies were received from Gerry Godden, Jack Prichard and Jack Bishop. These people represented firms, which were largely the backbone of the then Swimming Pool Industry. During the luncheon break a general discussion took place and it was suggested that an Institute be formed to represent the individuals working within the pool Industry. It was agreed that the ten persons mentioned should form a Management Committee and John Wilkins was elected as Chairman. It was agreed that the Institute would be for individuals within the industry. It was also decided that no corporate membership should be allowed, and that the ISPE, as it was to become known, would concentrate on a programme of education and training. The Institute would also encourage the free exchange of information, knowledge and experience. The next meeting was held in March 1979 when formation details and entry criteria were formalised. This was followed in May 1979 when an open meeting was held. Fifty six people attended and John Wilkins was elected to be the first ISPE President. From that point, it was uphill work. After the initial interest, it was not until the end of 1980 that the Institute could boast a membership of 121. At this point in time the Council of Management realised they needed to have a Secretary to run things properly. Molly Alcock had been John’s Secretary in the early sixties and had eventually become Manager of John’s company, Anglian Pools. She therefore had a good knowledge of the intricacies of swimming pools. John asked Molly if she would like a little job to run the Institute, as its Secretary, which, he said, would take about two hours a week. Clearly over the next 32 years Molly put rather more than two hours a week into the Institute and,

www.swimmingpoolnews.co.uk 47_SPN_Feb_19_IPSE.indd 47

with her guidance, assisted by her son Ross, who as the ‘new boy’ was taken on as the only ISPE employee in July 1989, the Institute has been built up to what it is to-day.

ONE-DAY SEMINARS AND HOME STUDY COURSE The Institute’s first one-day seminar was held at Graham Rutherford’s premises in Battle in October 1981 and 36 people attended. The Institute will be holding its 121st one-day Seminar in March 2019. The ISPE Seminars have covered virtually every conceivable subject relating to swimming pools and all associated areas, and enormous thanks are due to the many people who quite voluntarily have made technical presentations and spoken at these events. The same applies to the on-going Workshops, which are held at regular intervals and are an important part of the Institute’s educational programme. The Institute’s Home Study Course was launched in 1982 and has become successful beyond all expectations. Last year around 80 new student members registered and there are around 180 people registered on the Home Study Course at the present time. Here too, thanks go to the current and past Tutors and of course those who put the course together in the first place. It is their time, effort and dedication, which has contributed so much to the Institute and, therefore, to the industry as a whole.

MAGAZINE, TECHNICAL PAPERS AND CPD In the early days Molly produced a simple 8-page typed and photocopied ‘ISPE Magazine’ and over time this grew into a 12 page and then a 32 page full colour production. Again, huge thanks go to all the advertisers and to all those who have contributed articles plus items for publication. Thanks to the financial contributions from SPATEX over the last 22 years or so, and enormous help from John Dawes, FISPE, who acted as the Institute’s Technical Editor for many years, the Institute was able to publish a series of 22 Technical Papers. More recently, 2017 saw the launch of the ISPE Continuous Professional Development scheme. The publications and the CPD scheme are available to the whole of the swimming pool industry – not just the membership and the Institute is grateful to those companies that are actively supporting the ISPE CPD scheme by offering ‘Industry-supported‘ free-of-charge CPD training days.

MANY INVALUABLE CONTRIBUTIONS Over the past 40 years the ISPE has had many well-known and illustrious Presidents and they, together with all members of the Council of Management, past and present, have given hours of their time and travelled hundreds of miles to attend meetings and seminars in the service of the Institute. Without the Institute members there would not be an Institute. Every one contributes to the Institute’s progress from the students to the Fellows. There are many who say how proud they are to be part of the Institute, which has become one of the swimming pool industry’s great successes. The ISPE now look towards the 50th anniversary and hope that whoever is holding the wheel at that time will continue to steer the Institute forward successfully, but with a nod of appreciation to what has gone before them. B50 SEE NEW PRODUCTS AND OLD FAVOURITES ON THE FAIRLOCKS STAND The team at Fairlocks Pool Products are expecting a busy stand with three innovative new products being launched in Coventry: FlowBright: An underwater LED pool light that sets a new standard for all pool lighting products. This evolutionary product uses their patented electrical generation system to illuminate your pool without the need for electrical hook-ups, cables, transformers, niches, deck boxes or intricate installations. With its straightforward design, precisionengineered components, and high output, FlowBright will simplify pool installation and maintenance. OFI Smart Pool Monitor: This product analyses water quality 24/7 and readings are available continuously through the OFI app. These measurements are analysed by algorithms to extract the important data that tell owners the state of their water. GMT Spas are looking forward to returning to SPATEX 2019 and can be found in their usual location. The event gives them the opportunity to show off their amazing spas and is a fantastic way to meet and catch up with existing customers and meet potential new ones, too. GMT’s unique business model of supplying to the trade only and not installing, enables them to concentrate on, and remain true to their ethos of manufacturing superb highend products. It also gives assurance to customers that they will never compete for their contracts. Consequently, there is no award category for the company to enter at the Awards held during SPATEX, but a number of the company’s spas, hydrotherapy pools and swim spas have been entered into various categories. Over the past two years in particular, GMT Spas have had a lot of interest and enquiries in free standing sectional swimming pools, and have manufactured some beautiful models in unusual shapes, as well as the usual standard rectangle. GMT can incorporate spa features into a pool along with loungers and steps, giving each project a unique individuality. Their show spa this year is an evolution of their 2.1 Round Freeboard. This version has an infinity edge and external feature steps and would look stunning in-ground at an outdoor location. The tiles chosen would suite a contemporary or traditional location. This is only half the story as when the sunsets and darkness arrives the spa takes on an amazing transformation. See them on stand D33

HOT TUBS

2019 Hot Tubs – The New Season BellagioFalls are amongst a host of standard features on the new Artesian Elite range

Over recent years, hot tubs have been a real success story in the UK and for many involved in the sector, 2018 was another great year. With demand across both domestic and increasingly commercial markets showing no signs of slowing down, manufacturers and distributors are always looking to stay one step ahead of rival brands and a new year brings new opportunities. In this edition, we look at what’s new in this competitive sector By Jon Wadeson

W

ith strong demand from both domestic consumers and commercial clients showing no signs of easing up, it seems there’s no stopping the hot tub market in the UK. They have really taken hold across the country – from back gardens to holiday lodges and sports clubs to footballers’ mansions – their popularity has never been greater. Whether used for a social setting or for their hydrotherapy benefits, hot tubs in their various guises have managed to become a mainstream must-have leisure product and well and truly shaken off being viewed as a novelty and sometimes even tacky item. With brands adding new ranges to their offering or further enhancing existing models, plus some new names vying for business in what is already a very competitive market, 2019 could prove to be an interesting year. So what’s new for the season ahead? Well we round up just some of what’s new in this constantly evolving sector.

FUTURISTIC IKON HAS ALL THE MAKINGS OF A DESIGN CLASSIC Although the health, restorative and relaxation benefits of spa pools are welldocumented, some spa-goers aren’t huge fans of their conventional ‘big, square plastic box’ looks. The launch of Vortex Spas’ IKON design is set to change that. From the outset, the spa’s designer New Zealand born Alain Brideson was determined to come up with something “undeniably beautiful”. “It is inspired by modern architecture, that special feeling when stepping onto a yacht and ultimate relaxation. Using these ... looking to stay one-step ahead of the competition, brands have been quick to see the benefit of offering something different to affluent UK customers. It it quickly

manifested into a clean faceted exterior, grand entrance and simplified interior landscape,” said the 36-year-old global product designer. Alain was approached by Vortex Spas CEO Andrew Pullen who was looking to create something the spa world hadn’t seen before – something architects didn’t try to hide or bury in a deck. “Spas bring true joy to people’s lives. They bring families together, they improve relaxation, they reduce pain, they improve health, wellbeing and happiness. Why can’t they look beautiful as well?” said Andrew. Aside from the obvious sculptural and architectural differences, the materials used in the construction are from the marine and architectural industries and, subsequently designed to withstand the elements a lot longer than more traditional materials. Most spas have dedicated positions which is fine for the first few minutes, but after a while, spa users want to move around, maybe spend some time sitting on the edge with their feet in the water. The IKON has been designed for this. There are various seating positions and seating heights. You can sit or lie on the deck. It really does enhance lifestyles. With sculptural good looks and an update on how they’re able to be used, the IKON is set to become a star in the spa firmament

HOT TUBS SARATOGA’S CONQUEST SPAS FROM SPA CREST EUROPE Late last year, Spa Crest Europe Ltd announced that they have taken on exclusive rights to market the Saratoga Spas line of hot tubs across the UK. They will be distributing these alongside their other established products that are manufactured by Spa Crest, Tuff Spas and Premium Leisure (Swim Spas). Saratoga Spas, part of the large Imperial Pools company and one of America’s top liner pool manufacturers, are based in Latham, New York State, USA and have been manufacturing high quality hot tubs since 1984. Having spent some time at the Saratoga factory in the summer, Spa Crest Europe Managing Director Tony Welsby collaborated with the team at Saratoga to select ten of the company’s best sellers and create a new brand, exclusive to Spa Crest Europe, ‘Conquest Spas by Saratoga’. Conquest Spas has three lines of hot tubs: Contender, Challenger and Victory. Each line has differing features and many of the spas have industry features that are totally unique to Saratoga. As well as the domestic range of Conquest Spas, a range of four ‘Holiday Let’ hot tub models, fully compliant with HSG282, will also be available. Tony said: “Like everything we do at Spa Crest Europe, we wanted to try all aspects of the products out first in the UK. Our first container arrived in the beginning of August. After a few weeks of trialling the product to our retail customers and inviting dealers to come and see four of the models here at our UK HQ in Wigan, we were then fully satisfied with the product and what we wanted to achieve with the models. “We are now onto our third container and a number of our dealers are already displaying and retailing Conquest Spas. Although we are open now for enquiries from potential new dealers with regards to taking the products, we will be having a full launch of Conquest Spas on stand C50 at SPATEX 2019.”

UV SYSTEMS

Ultra Effective Ultra Violet

For many commercial and increasingly domestic settings, when it comes to the effective treatment of water in pools and other wet leisure environments, ultra violet systems are now an established choice. Their success is no real surprise when you consider UV’s many benefits, but their big selling point is a large reduction in chlorine use. As more pools make the switch to UV, more products have come to market and we take a look at the current options By Jon Wadeson

T

he benefits of using UV for water treatment have been known for a long time, however its mainstream use, particularly in the wet leisure sector, has been a much more recent phenomenon. The systems work by utilising radiation from UV lamps to inactivate the cells of undesirable organisms contained within swimming pool or spa water by altering the DNA of these harmful bacteria, microorganisms and pathogens. The result is cleaner water and a greatly reduced need for chemical treatment. Combined chlorine levels are also greatly reduced meaning a healthier setting for swimmers and the environment that surrounds the pool too. The effectiveness of UV systems combined with straight forward operation has meant that UV has been widely accepted as one of the most effective choices for water treatment. Further improvements have been made over recent years but manufacturers are far from finished when it comes to product developments and many are still improving the functionality of the systems that are on offer. This year sees even more solutions available for the pool and spa sector, and in this issue we focus on just some of the ultra effective products that are making water safer through the power of UV.

PURIQ SYSTEM UTILISES THE LATEST TECHNOLOGY FOR OPTIMAL PURIFICATION Available from Fairlocks, the PURIQ UV-C water purifier guarantees crystal-clear water. Utilising the latest technology, the lamp emits very powerful UV-C light with a wavelength of exactly 253.7 nm that kills practically all bacteria, viruses, algae and moulds. This results in optimal purification, so the use of chlorine and other chemicals can be reduced by up to 80%. The PURIQ UV-C system, with its 100%

from 100 to 280 nanometres. These wavelengths fall just outside of the part of the spectrum visible to the human eye. The disinfecting qualities of UV-C light are based on the damage it causes to the DNA of microorganisms. Good disinfection lamps produce UV-C light with a wavelength of 253.7 nanometres. The DNA absorbs the UV-C rays, and the resulting photochemical reaction breaks down the DNA code. As a result, the microorganism is made harmless and can no longer multiply. The extra wide SAE 316 stainless steel housing in the PURIQ system extends the time the water is exposed to the strong UV-C radiation while also minimising the pressure drop as the water passes through. Thanks to the polished interior, there is virtually no adhesion of contaminants to the walls, which boosts the effectiveness of the UV-C radiation by a further 35%. Installation of the PURIQ UV-C system is very simple and for peace of mind, each comes with a three year warranty against manufacturing defects.

LOWER PRESSURE UV-C SOLUTIONS FROM CERTIKIN The PURIQ UV-C system, with its 100% eco-friendly operation, provides more natural, healthier water

eco-friendly operation, provides more natural, healthier water. The extended life UV-C lamp lasts an incredible 12,000 hours ensuring the water quality is free from bacteria and algae. This enables customers, friends, or patrons to enjoy safe, clean swimming pool water for longer. So how does PURIQ work and why is it so effective? UV-C is invisible electromagnetic radiation that ranges in wavelength

As one of the market leading companies in the UK, Certikin offer a variety of UV solutions. They include the Blue Lagoon Buster UV-C, a product fitted with amalgam UV-C lamps which are known to be the most powerful low-pressure UV-C lights available on the market. Blue Lagoon Buster UV-C comes equipped with a built-in high frequency electronic ballast which absorbs current fluctuations thereby protecting the lamp. It includes a flow switch that will turn off the lamp when the flow is too low and a transparent lamp head which makes a visual inspection of the lamps as simple as can be. This is as well as a LED timer which visually warns in advance when lamps need to be changed. As well as being easy to install and maintain, the Buster UV-C is able to reduce the use of chlorine

UV SYSTEMS or other chemicals by up to 80% making it the ideal UV system. In addition to the Buster UV-C, there’s the Certikin UV Clarifier range, which had a new 110W version added last year. Aimed at swimming pools up to 75,000 litres with a maximum flow rate of 25,000 litres per hour, the unit has been designed to help prevent green water in swimming pools and ponds by emitting 254nm UV light inside a sealed tube, damaging and destroying singled celled algae which cause green water. This clarifier will help clear green water and prevent it coming back. The CUV is installed in the plant room after the filter and before the salt water chlorine generator or tablet feeder, on the return line to the pool. It is simple to install and is supplied with pre-fitted stainless steel mounting brackets that allow you to fix the unit horizontally or vertically.

PREVENTATIVE MAINTENANCE KEY TO UV SUCCESS UV systems may have transformed the way good water clarity is achieved, but without the right maintenance, their advantages can be quickly overshadowed. That’s the message from Golden Coast, one of the UK wet leisure industry’s leading distributors. Managing Director Jamie Adams explained: “Installing a UV system brings homeowners countless benefits. However, like most things, a bit of TLC is needed on a regular basis to keep it working at its best. “Without this, the system’s performance can be compromised as the lamp degrades and perishable items fail. The resulting poor water clarity and unexpected downtime and repairs can be very frustrating… “Fortunately, avoiding this has never

been easier. All you need is a well-panned maintenance schedule and to help you do that, we offer one and two year service kits for Triogen UV systems. They contain everything contractors need to carry out preventative maintenance.” Triogen’s two year kit, for example, which is exclusively available through Golden Coast, includes a replacement quartz lamp, quartz tube ‘O’ ring and filter mat. Jamie added: “We have been working closely with Triogen for more than five years and their UV units are built to an exceptionally high specification. They’re robust, corrosion-resistant and come with an 18-month lamp life, too. “They are a great investment for owners, which is why protecting their performance is so important. Preventative maintenance is key to giving your customers the on going, costeffective UV disinfection they need… while

adding to your bottom line.”

REGULATION SET TO TAKE OVER THE POOL INDUSTRY The PWTAG Code of Practice provides UK pool operators with a structured plan for the technical operation of their pool. It is also designed to meet the health and safety challenge to one of the greatest threats that the aquatics sector has to deal with – the chlorine-resistant pathogen, Cryptosporidium. Ultraviolet (UV) disinfection is a wellestablished and extremely effective chemicalfree barrier to safeguard against all known bacteria, viruses and pathogens, including the 17 chlorine resistant organisms that threaten pool user safety, such as Cryptosporidium and Giardia. When ingested, these particular parasites can cause serious gastrointestinal illness. Last year, the PWTAG pool water book was updated and now recommends that UV system performance should be independently

At around a third of the size of comparative UV systems, and with significantly reduced maintenance space, atg UV Technology’s newly validated Wafer (WF) series is easy to install or retrofit into the tightest of plant rooms without compromising on performance. Installed across the world, from Centre Parcs Subtropical Paradises to Royal Caribbean cruise ships, these state-of-the-art UV systems are fully tested to the leading USEPA UVDGM validation standard for guaranteed disinfection performance against Cryptosporidium and many other waterborne micro organisms. In addition, the WF will eliminate problem chloramines and protect bathers against itchy skin, red burning eyes and overpowering smells associated with alternative chemical methods.

ULTIMATE INTERNAL REFLECTION Available from Plastica, H.R.UV-C is the newest member to the Elecro family of sanitisers. Designed using the latest knowledge of highly reflective reactor casing materials, the H.R.UV-C, produces up to 95% reflectivity is achieved (if you compare this to stainless steel reactors only 20 to 28% reflection is typically achieved). The H.R.UV-C is 100%

sea and saltwater compatible, unlike stainless steel units that suffer corrosion issues. The super reflective properties of the Elecro H.R.UV-C optimises the UV-C radiation and dramatically increases the performance. The inside surface casing is extremely repellent and therefore self-cleaning. Intelligent electronics indicate when the lamps are not producing sufficient UV-C and need to be changed, ensuring the unit is always performing optimally. The H.R.UV-C is compatible with and complements all traditional treatment methods including; chlorine, bromine, active oxygen / hydrogen peroxide and salt electrolysis. A narrow and extended chamber ensures maximum exposure to the powerful UV-C. It is easy to use and install, can be retro fitted to any existing pool system – a self-cleaning system, reducing the need for maintenance. The intelligent lamp life indicator signals when the lamps are no longer producing sufficient UV-C and need to be changed. Ensuring your unit is always performing optimally and has a long lamp life, up to 9,000 hours, ensuring that the unit is performing optimally. Also available is Elecro’s Spectrum Hybrid which provides the next generation of UV water treatment. The Spectrum Hybrid unit creates Hydroxyl Radicals, which are essentially a water molecule with a hydrogen atom removed, causing the molecule to be highly volatile and reactive. The exceptional mobility of the molecules that fill the reaction chamber leads to the destruction of pollutants in their path. Once the Hydroxyl Radical has reacted with the pollutant it converts back into water.

LIGHTHOUSE ADD ‘TITAN’ UV SOLUTION TO THEIR RANGE New from Lighthouse for the 2019 season, the Filtreau UV-C Titan ensures crystal-clear water. The sophisticated design and high quality materials produce high UV-C radiation with a wavelength of precisely 253.7 nm. This high level of radiation kills almost all

bacteria, viruses and even fungi, providing clear and clean water. As a result, the level of added chemicals (e.g. chlorine) can be reduced, ensuring more natural feeling and healthier water. The system is easily installed into domestic pool pipework whether it is a retrospective installation or as part of a new build. The units are also covered by a two year warranty on manufacturing defects. Due to the extra-wide DUPLEX housing on the Filtreau range, the water stays in contact with the UV-C radiation for a longer time. This broad housing also ensures that there is minimal pressure loss during the water treatment. The housing is polished on the inside to minimise the chances of dirt sticking to the walls. Overall, this increases the effectiveness of the UV-C radiation by up to 35%. The intelligent electronics indicate when the lamp is not producing enough radiation and needs to be changed (approx. 12,000hrs), ensuring you know that your device is energy efficient and environmentally friendly. Add to this an upgraded Ozone loop and you have one of the most effective sterilisers on the market. The Filtreau UV-C Ozone adds a second line of defence to the standard UV-C system. Ozone has a very strong oxidation and sterilisation effect on all organic substances. It is for exactly these reasons that it has been used to disinfect drinking water and air for decades, as well as being used in the food industry.

WATER TREATMENTS & SYSTEMS

A Clean, Clear And Safe Environment Whether in a domestic or commercial setting, providing a clean and safe environment is a must for any pool or spa owner. When it comes to water treatment, there’s no denying that traditional methods are still popular, effective and proven, but with an ever-increasing range of alternative products and systems on offer, is there such a thing as the best solution? With numerous options available for a variety of settings, this issue we examine what’s on offer By Jon Wadeson

E

very pool and spa owner or operator desires healthy clear water that looks great and is pleasant to relax or swim in. When you consider that each person entering the water adds many thousands of microorganisms to an environment that already contains a good supply of its own, effective water treatment is essential and has to be ever-present. There are numerous methods of water treatments on the market today and whilst those tried and tested still have a strong placement in the field, consumers are becoming more accepting of less well-known systems. One thing that is guaranteed in the introduction of these excellent bacteria barriers is that bathers can wave goodbye to red eyes, itchy skin and other nasty side effects of poorly treated pool and spa water. So with UV covered separately already in this edition, in this feature we take a closer look at a number of other water treatments and systems which are providing a clean and safe water environment.

A SIMPLE TO INSTALL SOLUTION – PLASTICA’S RESILIENCE C Natural salt water chlorinators are the most economical, natural and environmentally friendly disinfection systems for swimming pools and spas. They convert natural table salt into chlorine. This sanitises the water while eliminating the negative side effects associated with traditional chlorine. Resilience C is a natural salt chlorinator developed for pool owners wishing to install a simple, easy to operate device. This modest, dependable salt chlorinator offers reliable pool sanitation, leaving them more time to swim, bathe and relax. The lightweight unit works at full capacity at ambient temperatures of up to 122ºF and features include: • 24 hrs turbo chlorination mode • 4 levels of chlorine production • 4 warning signals • Winter protection mode

• Automatic reversed polarity for keeping blades clean. Salt water chlorinators use dissolved salt as a means of creating chlorine to clean the pool. It’s important to note that these systems are not chlorine-free, they just use a different process to create the chlorine instead of just dumping the chemical into the pool. A salt water pool makes hypochlorous acid (HClO) by using table salt or sodium chloride (NaCl) and electrolysis. The salt water passes through an electric current creating chlorine gas (Cl2), but you’re also forming hydrogen gas (H2) and sodium hydroxide (NaOH). Using electrolysis, dissolved salt is converted into hypochlorous acid (HClO) and sodium hypochlorite, the sanitising agents used to clean the water of any dirt and bacteria. So, instead of just dumping chlorine into the water, you create a chlorine generator with a salt water chlorinator that continues to generate chlorine until more salt is needed.

well as an unpleasant odour. Salt pools are a popular alternative but they convert the salt to chlorine and they can irritate as can other alternatives such as bromine. The Microtech Aligator water purification system is a low chemical, eco-friendly and automatic solution which is well within the budget of most domestic pool owners. “We believe that it is really the end for stinging eyes and irritated skin conditions,” said General Manager David Dunn. The system works by harmlessly charging copper and silver ions creating a residual disinfectant throughout the pool. No other system other than chemical sanitation will do this. The ions are pH neutral, non-corrosive and have no effect on the human body. The system is not affected by heat or light and is effective for longer periods than UV or chemicals. Once programmed the system is fully automatic and will reduce chemical usage by 80%. Established in the UK since 1992, Microtech Aligator has installed systems in health clubs, hotels, spas and private homes across the UK and Ireland and has thousands of satisfied customers. “The water is pure, you can use the backwash from your pool to water your garden as it contains less chemicals and is completely harmless,” added David. The company are so confident of their system they offer a return to base guarantee on parts and labour for five years. FEEL THE DIFFERENCE WITH MAGNAPOOL® FROM LIGHTHOUSE

With the introduction of Hyprolyser iSEC® electrochlorination systems for smaller

The very first time a bather jumps into a MagnaPool® they can feel the difference. The water has a gentle, silky feeling against the skin. There is little or no irritation to eyes and hair won’t need washing to get rid of that chlorine smell or sticky salt – a feeling often associated with chlorine and salt water pools. The pool will always have crystal clear water and will be easy to maintain. The magnesium chloride found in MagnaPool® minerals is derived from the ocean. This form of magnesium has been found to have significant beneficial properties for internal health, as well as helping to relax the mind and body. It can help in detoxifying the body, reducing aches and pains, relieving stress and anxiety and providing the muscles with energy. Studies have proven that absorbing magnesium chloride through the skin (transdermal) is one of the most effective ways for the body to maintain healthy levels of this important mineral. Magnesium is responsible for many important cellular processes in the body. It can support detoxification, reduce stress and alleviate aches. It promotes energy and wellbeing and can restore soft and healthy skin. The MagnaPool® system helps keep chloramine levels to a minimum, so the water is gentler on sensitive skin. Due to the strong flocculent effect of magnesium, it works like a magnet helping to rid the pool water of

GAFFEY HYPROLYSER CREATES A LOW HAZARD PLANT ROOM

The Hyprolyser iSEC® from Gaffey is the solution for smaller commercial pools to ensure low hazard plant rooms

commercial pools, Gaffey are now able to promote the benefits of a ‘low hazard plant room’ to all types of commercial swimming pools. Whilst great water quality and efficient chlorination are prerequisites for any pool operator, these requirements are only part of the picture when considering an equipment upgrade or new-build pool. In smaller commercial/hotel pools where technical staff are often in shorter supply, choosing a disinfection system which eliminates the need for the handling and storage of hazardous chemicals is an attractive proposition, in addition to a significant reduction in COSHH management tasks. Andrew Gaffey, Technical Director, commented: “We know that the majority of chemical spillages or chlorine gas incidents occurring in pool facilities happen when hazardous chemicals are being transferred, prepared into solution, or when the cleaning or maintenance of chemical injection points is undertaken. If these tasks and hazards can be avoided altogether then the chances of accidents and injuries occurring through operator error are greatly reduced.” Hyprolyser® iSEC models produce a dilute sodium hypochlorite solution, safely generated on-site using only salt, water and electrical energy. The hypochlorite solution produced contains less than 1% active chlorine, below the threshold for classification as a dangerous substance. As this solution can be produced freshly on demand every day, there is no need for large quantities of chlorine to be stored on site. The added benefit of on-site production means that the generated solution is always fresh and does not degrade in storage like commercially produced sodium hypochlorite. Manufactured by Gaffey at their factory in Lancashire, Hyprolyser® electrochlorination systems are now available in capacities from 30g/h to 8.5kg/h of chlorine. Well proven in delivering a safe and economical alternative to commercial chlorine chemicals, they are used in swimming pools around the world.

A NEW APPROACH – BOSTA’S BIOLOGICAL LOTUS BOX Last year, Bosta UK launched a new approach to pool filtration. The use of chemicals to maintain pool water quality has been the norm for decades, but there are now efficient ways to maintain a pool without the need to use chlorine. The Lotus box is a complete assembled plant room which includes everything needed to filter the pool successfully by biological means. The Lotus Box can be installed on new or existing pools and includes a filtration pump for water circulation, mechanical pre-filtration using a multicyclone filter, biological filtration using the shark bead filter which uses micro-organisms to digest the organic residue. Water purification then takes place through the UV-Ozone system which gives ongoing disinfection in the pool without

WATER TREATMENTS & SYSTEMS the use of detergents. Don’t be mistaken in thinking this is a natural pool which relies on plants to filter the water through phyto-purification. There is now no need to use plants to maintain crystal clear water. Through the careful design of the Lotus Box, the manufacturer can guarantee the flow rates required to maintain healthy pool water and treat the water through biological means. Although new to the UK, the Lotus Box system has been successfully installed at a number of commercial pool sites in France and Belgium and conforms to the stringent water treatment laws in these countries for pools up to 500m3.

CRYSTAL CLEAR RESULTS WITH WATERCO’S HYDROCHLOR MINERAL CHLORINATOR Waterco’s new, energy efficient Hydrochlor chlorinates a pool, making it healthy, crystal clear and ready to swim in year-round. In fact, a mineral / salt water chlorinated pool requires considerably less attention than a standard chlorinated pool. Hydrochlor uses the latest Switch Mode Power Technology to increase energy efficiency by over 50%, significantly reducing power consumption. The power pack draws less current and this translates to high power conversion and less energy wastage, without compromising chlorine output. It also intelligently recognises the size of the connected chlorinator cell and automatically adjusts its power output to suit. Featuring salt level protection, an alarm indicates when salt levels in the pool water are too high or too low. If the pool is running beyond the maximum recommended salt level, the chlorinator will limit its output to protect the chlorinator cell. The Hydrochlor also includes an in-built, easy to use timer equipped with battery backup, which will maintain settings for up to 150 hours. If no water flow is detected in the chlorinator cell, Hydrochlor automatically switches off the chlorine production to Waterco’s new, energy efficient Hydrochlor chlorinates a pool, making it healthy, crystal clear and ready to swim in yearround

There are numerous methods of water treatments on the market today and whilst those tried and tested still have a strong placement in the field, consumers are becoming more accepting of less well-known systems” protect the chlorinator cell, and activates the No Flow LED indicator. Automated self-cleaning capability means that the Hydrochlor’s chlorinator cell has the added ability to reverse its polarity and automatically clean calcium build-up off its electrodes. Hydrochlor works perfectly with a standard salt pool, but Waterco’s engineers didn’t stop there. They specially designed it to work in synergy with Waterco’s Mineral Crystals to transform any pool into a therapeutic oasis of magnesium enriched water. Adding Waterco’s Mineral Crystals to pool water in place of salt enables users to experience the health benefits of bathing in magnesium enriched water. Magnesium has been recognised by medical professionals and consumers all over the world for its ability to alleviate a variety of ailments relating to the skin, muscles and nervous system. Mineral Crystals not only improve pool water with a blend of naturally occurring minerals, but they also moisturise a user’s skin as they swim. In fact, the common effects associated with

swimming in a chlorinated pool, including red eyes and dry skin, are significantly relieved with Mineral Crystals. Its gentle formulation that has little to no taste and can be used in any type of pool. SPN

POOL & SPA PUMPS

Keeping Pool And Spa Water On The Move

Providing powerful circulation for pools and spas of various sizes, pumps are essential components found at the centre of every effective plant room. With the introduction of variable speed technology, it’s a product sector that has witnessed rapid change over recent years, along with the release of numerous new models. Thankfully, choosing the right pump just became much easier though as we highlight some of the best models that are available this year By Andrea Hartshorne

T

he range of pool and spa pumps available to today’s market offer virtually maintenance-free operation, but that fact glosses over the important role that they play in any efficient plant room. Working away behind the scenes, pumps are essential pieces of kit on any domestic and commercial pool or spa operation and recent design advances mean that the products produced are a continual improvement on previous models and are increasingly energy-efficient. Whether used by a home swimming pool, destination spa or leisure centre, pumps are the discreet and unassuming grafters of the plant room. They are the power behind the scenes and as they quietly go about the business of circulating water, they play a crucial role in helping a pool or spa to perform to the maximum of their ability. Put simply, they’re products that pools and spas can’t operate without. With models on offer for a range of budgets and applications too, we take a closer look at some of the products available in 2019.

A NEW GENERATION OF AN INDUSTRY FAVOURITE FROM CERTIKIN Spring 2019 sees the launch of a new generation of the popular Aquaspeed pump. Spring 2019 sees the launch of a new generation of Certikin’s popular Aquaspeed pump

Available exclusively from Certikin, the new Aquaspeed pump fits in perfectly to the original pump’s footprint and pipe work connections. It is available in a choice of sizes from 0.5 hp to 3 hp and it has a single piece fibreglass pump body to ensure maximum strength and durability. The solid clear pump lid allows for easy inspection of the pump basket, with the range also being suitable for salt chlorinated pools. All models are supplied with a limited two-year warranty. The new generation range of pumps also include the Aquaspeed 100 ECO-V pump. With all the benefits of the renowned Aquaspeed range, the ECO-V brings variable speed economy to an industry favourite. Equipped with a state-of-the-art variable speed, permanent magnet brushless motor that results in the ability to vary the motor speed depending on the installation requirements. The pumps are ideal for new installations or retrofit as the connections are exactly the same as the single speed Aquaspeed.

Krispsol KORAL-KS self-priming centrifugal pumps are available from Fairlocks Pool Products

KRIPSOL’S DURABLE PUMPS WITH GERMAN DESIGN FROM FAIRLOCKS Fairlocks are renowned for the supply of high-quality pool products. Pumps can affect the way a swimming pool is run and the efficiency of the pool is an essential factor for pool ownership. With this in mind, amongst other products, the company currently supplies Krispsol’s KORAL-KS self-priming centrifugal pumps, which are some of the highest quality pumps available. They have been engineered with German design and have a thermoplastic injection moulded casing which is reinforced with glass fibre enabling them to withstand all elements. Hinged lid closing screws with stainless steel studs and O ring ensure the pump fixings are durable and all pumps are suitable for all types of pool environments, including salt water. Connections are either Ø50 or Ø63mm socket unions (with imperial adaptors supplied). The pumps come in various motor sizes dependent on the pool size required to enhance your pool’s efficiency and effectiveness. Further to improve the energy saving properties of the swimming pool pump, Fairlocks can also provide the Mega Pool Saver. The product is one of the most advanced and efficient, variable speed controllers that can be used with a single speed pool pump. Some features include: savings of up to 80% on pool pump energy consumption, unrivalled compatibility

POOL & SPA PUMPS A wide range of SPECK pumps are available through Golden Coast including the flexible BADU EasyFit (left) and the whisper-quiet BADU Gamma range (below)

with 95% single speed pumps (1.1kW or 1.5hp), four programmable time settings, over 30 programmable speeds and easy DIY installation. Working in unison with the pump, the Mega Pool Savers makes the pool run smoother, provides excellent efficiencies and offers flexibility to pool owners.

PUMP UP THE PERFORMANCE WITH GOLDEN COAST Golden Coast takes pride in being the UK’s exclusive distributor of SPECK pumps. They offer an exhaustive selection that meets the needs of pools of all shapes and sizes, and which includes the BADU EasyFit. It is the ideal choice for those looking to replace or upgrade existing pumps and according to the company, it leads the competition on efficiency by 20%. With its adjustable feet and adaptable plumbing kits, it’s fully compatible with major brands and eliminates the need for costly re-plumbing. Alongside a variable speed model (BADU EasyFit Eco VS), the range also includes a new addition for 2019 which bundles the Speck EasyFit pump with the Waterco bobbin wound filter. This new combination offers the added flexibility for retrofit and counters the heavily-discounted Sta-Rite pumps being offered online. The range includes the whisper-quiet

BADU Gamma range. Improved hydraulics with optimised water flow ensures efficient performance, while its optional inner / outer threads offer installers absolute flexibility. A highly efficient variable speed model (BADU Gamma Eco VS) is also available and can be controlled remotely (via BADU Eco Logic). The extended range also includes a number of low-maintenance designs, as Golden Coast’s Managing Director Jamie Adams explained: “The BADU Delta range, for example, has a maintenance-free motor, thanks to a design featuring high-performance ball bearings and a stainless steel motor shaft. “Corrosion can be a real concern for pool owners. When it comes to protection, there’s the BADU Bronze. It’s a space-saving design made from a high-quality bronze alloy – meaning it’s free from harmful zinc and lead additives.” For customers looking for the ultimate in corrosion-resistance, as well as performance, a variable speed model, BADU Bronze Eco VS, is also available. Like its stablemates, the revolutionary BADU Profi offers quiet and efficient performance, but that’s not why it’s so ground-breaking according to Golden Coast. Jamie said: “It’s the world’s first sealless swimming pool pump, thanks to its contactless magnetic coupling. Best of all,

it puts an end to the maintenance and leak issues associated with mechanical seals.”

WATERCO OFFERS A WIDE RANGE OF SOLUTIONS The range of Waterco pumps now available for the pool and spa market spans everything from smaller 0.33HP domestic pool pumps right up to larger 15HP commercial options. With models like the Aquamite, Supastream, Hydrotuf and Hydrostorm offering solutions for smaller pools and systems, and the Hydrostar and Hydrostar Plus available in various sizes for commercial installations, there really is a pump available for every installation. Designed for reliability and maximum performance, Waterco pumps incorporate the latest technology in design and construction to produce energy saving, durable, high performance pumps ideal for any pool or spa installation. On standard models the impellor and diffuser design maximise the hydraulic output of the pump while minimising turbulence. The efficient hydraulic performance shortens run time and reduces energy consumption leading to lower operating costs. In addition to these, Waterco also offer a number of variable speed Eco pumps capable of moderating their motor speed, reducing water flow when required, and reducing energy

With numerous models for smaller pools and systems, Waterco also have the Hydrostar (right) and Hydrostar Plus (left) available in various sizes for commercial installations

consumption by up to 67% compared to a standard motor pump. Waterco is committed to the continuous improvement and re-development of all their products to provide the very best quality and value to their customers, and newly released is the Hydrostar MK IV version commercial pump. Re-engineered to provide further improved flow rates and quieter performance, this update to a well-established model in the Waterco range is available from 2019 and will be on display at the upcoming SPATEX 2019 exhibition.

THE EFFICIENT NEO RANGE OF PUMPS FROM HERBORNER Herborner offer a wide range of pump solutions for the wet leisure sector and their herborner.neo range offers a combination of an energy-efficient motor and smooth-coated pump hydraulics. The built-in frequency converter and the maximum impeller

diameter demonstrate the complete efficiency of the new generation of pumps, which use a speed controller to regulate the available power of the motor within a typical working range. For the operator, this series means lower life cycle costs thanks to the best possible energy efficiency and quality. As a result, this innovation creates a resource-saving product that reduces CO2 emissions in the long term. That makes the herborner.neo one of the most sustainable products in the pump industry. In addition to the generation of pumps, the company also has pump selection software – PAHN AI – which was launched at the last aquanale trade fair in Germany. This webbased software now allows simpler, intelligent pump selection through the company’s redesigned website. The new herborner.neo pumps are tailored to the specific application in each case. The herborner.Fneo can be used flexibly

For 2019, Bosta UK have launched their new Norsup Evo+ pump range

as a block pump, which makes it ideal for the complex world of plant engineering. The herborner.Xneo is ideal for use as a circulating pump, with its built-in hair and fib filter. The portfolio is rounded out by the inline block pump, herborner.Dneo, which can be installed directly in pipelines. And of course the WATERblue-B is also available in the ‘maximised’ design, as WATERblue-Bneo.

INTRODUCING THE NORSUP EVO+ PUMP RANGE FROM BOSTA For 2019, Bosta UK have launched their new Norsup Evo+ pump range. This is a new model of pump that falls within the Norsup brand focusing on high quality products sold through their approved dealer network. Plastica’s Argonaut pump comes with a heavy-duty long life IP55 rated motor that is quiet running with a 60 dB rating

THE FLEXIBLE ZODIAC FLOPRO FROM LIGHTHOUSE FloPro – Zodiac’s complete range of pool pumps – offers compatibility with nearly all existing installations. Tried and tested, the FloPro range is recognised as one of the leading solutions for providing the ultimate in quality and compatibility. The single speed range, nine models available, come with all the benefits associated with its successful variable speed cousins namely: large filter basket, internal 2” thread and 2” external unions and the unique base system facilitating compatibility with most existing installations without the need for plumbing modifications. FloPro also comes in two variable speed options, both with the same benefits and features as the single speed models, the e3 and 160VS. The e3 is a 1 hp variable speed pump with three simple, one touch, programmable buttons giving the end user the flexibility to change the pump speeds when desired i.e. for filtration, backwashing and cleaning. FloPro VS160 is a fully interactive 1.65 hp variable speed pump. With eight individual,

programmable speeds, removable controller and iAqualink compatibility, the FloPro is the ultimate in pool pump technology. Exclusive to Lighthouse Pools FloPro, like all of Lighthouse’s products, is only available to pool installers / retailers, making it the go to pump for the pool industry. Lighthouse Pools will have a full display of pool pumps and filters, from Zodiac, on stand E40 at SPATEX 2019.

ARGONAUT PUMPS GO FROM STRENGTH TO STRENGTH Plastica’s first year of bringing the Argonaut pump production in-house is proving to be a positive move. The Argonaut and smaller counterpart the AG Pump have been a resounding success with all wet end components made in the UK and all assembly work undertaken in their purposebuilt pump room in the St. Leonards factory. Edward Campbell-Salmon, Plastica’s Managing Director commented that: “The packaging has been greatly improved with all pumps encased in specially moulded foam to guarantee that every pump arrives at its final destination in perfect condition, no more broken fan casings!” Both pumps are versatile in their application for either small to medium sized pools and also work well with a spa – as shown in action recently in their very own Hot Dub creation, the spa-in-a-car featured at Lyon and last year’s SPATEX. The Argonaut pump comes with a heavy-duty long life IP55 rated motor that is quiet running with a 60 dB rating

and the pump self-primes up to 3 metres. The mechanical seal made with AISI 316 stainless steel is suitable for a wide range of applications including chlorine, bromine and salt chlorinated pools, the glass filled polypropylene tank has an unparalleled high chemical resistance. All motors include a high-grade stainless-steel shaft, input power ranging from 0.25 (hp) 0.19 kW – 2 (hp) 1.5kW available in single phase and three phase. Their pump incorporates a large 1.75 litre strainer basket and clear lid for easy inspection, as a last effort to avoid leaf or hair contamination reaching the closetolerance impeller section of the pump. For ease of installation, the Argonaut comes with adjustable unions for both metric (63 mm) and imperial (2”) with inserts taking it down to metric 50 ml and imperial 1.5 inch. Will Dando, Plastica’s Technical Manager, commented: “We believe this British made swimming pool pump is the best choice for small and medium sized pools. It has superior build quality, performance, durability and reliability.”

POOL CLEANERS

Keeping It Clean In 2019 The task of keeping swimming pools of all shapes and sizes clean is one that thankfully has become significantly easier over the years. Numerous product advances have all played a part in this, but a lot of it is down to increasingly clever and efficient designs. Innovative manual and in particular robotic models have greatly reduced what was once a laborious but always essential task and in this issue, we look at 10 of the best pool cleaners available this year By Andrea Hartshorne POOL BLASTER CATFISH FROM GOLDEN COAST This battery-powered vacuum, available exclusively in the UK through Golden Coast, is powerful enough to suck up

sand, leaves and other detritus with ease… but small enough to clean right into the corners (thanks to a crevice corner nozzle included as standard). Offering a 45-minute run time and a quick recharge time of just four hours, the Pool Blaster Catfish runs independently from the main pool systems. Better still, it doesn’t require any additional pumps or awkward hoses. This clever little cleaner makes the often tiresome task of keeping a pool clean quick and simple. Golden Coast 01271 378100 www.GCTrade.co.uk

POOL BLASTER AQUA BROOM FROM GOLDEN COAST Aqua Broom, which is available exclusively through Golden Coast, offers an affordably priced and effective alternative for small pool owners. Aqua Broom is significantly more powerful than wands and hoses – meaning that the cleaning is quicker and easier. It requires just five D-Cell batteries and is easy to operate: simply place it in the water and switch on to get started. For enhanced results, Aqua Broom micro filter bags can be fitted to remove sand, silt and even algae. With its low price point, it makes creating a cleaner and safer environment for families easier than ever before. Golden Coast 01271 378100 www.GCTrade.co.uk

OPINION

Our Time To Shine? “The world is in a funny old place at the moment and even through rose-tinted glasses it can look a bit gloomy. And then a thought struck me…” Jamie Adams, Managing Director at Golden Coast reflects on the current difficult mood for many across the nation and how the industry is well placed to improve it

DON’T MENTION THE ‘B’ WORD When I sat down to write this the first thing that came into my mind was a list of things that I didn’t want to talk about. More than that, I wanted to avoid them like the plague. Near the top of the list was our relationship with Europe. You know, that thing that we’ve been talking about for over 30 months. Well, when I say ‘talking’, perhaps squabbling, arguing and vilifying each other would be slightly more accurate. For two and a half years this subject has dominated the media to the point that even the slightest mention of it on the radio or the TV will now make me change sides even if that leaves me listening to The Archers or watching Pointless. I don’t think I’m alone in this either. Even hard-liners on either side have moderated their views to, ‘Look, I really don’t care. Let’s at least just do something and get it over with.’ Probably the only people who are still passionate about it are the ones who are paid to be. Oh. Like David Davies and Dominic Raab. See what I mean.

DON’T USE THE ‘T’ WORD If ‘B’ is about our relationship with our friends across the Channel, ‘T’ is about the American President’s tenuous relationship with reality and his friends over the border, down Mexico way. Just to remind ourselves, this is arguably the most powerful man in the world and our reaction to him is essentially nervous laughter. Or we simply turn away and try to pretend the problem doesn’t exist. When I was growing up, I can remember people complaining bitterly about those who attempted to ignore bad news, people who ‘stuck their head in the sand’. ‘Behaving like an ostrich’, that was the phrase that was used. Well it looks like we all want to be ostriches now, and with good reason.

AND DON’T TALK ABOUT… Global warming or plastic in the ocean. A stagnant economy and everyday sexism. Pollution, Putin, fake news and reality television. I could carry on, but then the list would be longer than this article. You get the picture; the world is a difficult place full of tension, stress and anxiety. And the thought that struck me was that our industry sells an antidote to all that. I know we are all aware of the benefits of

I also think it’s a fair bet that the weather, the economy and the internet will be the three top things that people feel have had an influence on their business in the last year. They always are” pools, spas and saunas as places to relax and unwind but I think they stand repeating. We all have stresses in our busy and hectic lives – personal ones and those that affect all of us – and it is so easy to forget just how meditative it is to do ten or 20 laps in a crystal clear pool, how calming it is to sit in the quiet of a hot sauna or laugh with family and friends in the jets and bubbles of a hot tub. I can’t think of a time where more people were more in need of the benefits that our industry can bestow.

nigh on impossible to overcome. But if you think about your day-to-day experience does that ring true? If you look at last year’s sales figures, does it look true? There is always a difference between perception and reality. In a recession, a lack of consumer confidence is more of an influence than a lack of consumer cash. We are living through events that we are told are negative or threatening but in all likelihood they will have less of an impact on our businesses than the state of the weather next June.

POOLS, SAUNAS, SPAS AND SURVEYS

ALWAYS LOOK ON THE BRIGHT SIDE OF LIFE

The results of the 2018 Wet Leisure Survey will be shared with everyone at SPATEX and I think it’s safe to assume that Brexit (damn, I used the ‘B’ word.) will be seen as one of the biggest challenges businesses have to face this coming year. I also think it’s a fair bet that the weather, the economy and the internet will be the three top things that people feel have had an influence on their business in the last year. They always are. And I think that is an important thing to remember. Listening to and looking at the stories, views and opinions that the media pushes towards us every single day, it’s easy to feel that we are facing a uniquely challenging time with problems that are

I’m not suggesting that we all wear rosetinted glasses, that we behave like ostriches and ignore real problems, but I am suggesting that we are in a good business and that business is good. That what we sell benefits our customers in a host of different ways at a time when those benefits are exactly what they need and are looking for. See, I told you; thinking about pools, spas and saunas has cheered you up already. Jamie Adams is Managing Director of Golden Coast, the current Chairman of Pool Industry Promotions (PIP) and a board member of the British Swimming Pool Federation (BSPF).
