to host digitally this year. It was actually a very well presented event and from what I can tell, was well received and appreciated too. As a Judge, I would just like to say congratulations to all who entered and everyone who picked up an Award. Once again, there were some truly amazing pool and spa projects on show.

The short period between SPATEX and the start of spring is always a busy one for many within the UK wet leisure industry and this year (following on from what has to be one of the busiest of years for the industry ever) has been no different. If anything, it’s been even busier than usual with overhang of orders and tasks from 2020. In fact I’ve not spoken to anyone that hasn’t been busy and who doesn’t feel optimistic about business for the year ahead. Any negatives have fallen into the ‘not enough time’ or ‘not enough product’ categories. Of course the pandemic has created a number of difficulties, and no doubt will continue to do so. Brexit has also posed challenges, but on the whole, I think the sector has been tremendously fortunate recently. With commercial operators now opening up too, I’m sure I am not the only one in the industry who is breathing a sigh of relief at the return of some small sense of normality. It’s somewhat strange looking back a year to my piece in 2020’s corresponding issue. Everything was up in the air at that stage of the pandemic but I’m glad my inkling that the Industry could find itself at the forefront of any recovery has largely proven to be correct – well, so far at least – and I hope peoples’ health and wellbeing remains more of a priority going forward. Having mentioned SPATEX above (which of course took place virtually rather than in Coventry this year), inside this issue we highlight all the Gold winners from the annual British Pool & Hot Tub Awards which for obvious reasons, BISHTA and SPATA had

We also explore what’s new in the one-piece and fibreglass swimming pools market, products that have enjoyed an amazing period and which hope to take the hassle out of installations for both pool builders and owners alike. Still on the subject of convenience, we’ve an in depth look at the latest automatic cover systems for the domestic swimming pool sector. Pool liners and systems – perfect for both new build and refurbishment projects – are also once again featured in this edition and if that wasn’t enough to keep you going, we’ve a piece on high-end swim spas which have, like most products over the last 12 months, also been selling extremely well to both families and those in search of some serious exercise while public pools and leisure centres have been closed. Looking at the season ahead, Golden Coast’s Jamie Adams looks at some of the factors that are likely to make or break 2021. The STA’s Luke Griffiths discusses some of the considerations and risks as a result of the boom in hot tub sales over the last 12 months, plus we’ve a piece on Darlly Europe who have had to expand their operations in Europe following logistics difficulties as a result of Brexit. Something that the wider industry is also struggling with, especially when combined with the pandemic. There’s also useful information from the BSPF, SPATA and BISHTA plus we’ve also got our round up of all the latest industry, product, eco, people and wellness news from both here in the UK and abroad too. So that’s this latest issue covered. All that leaves me to say is I hope you enjoy it and of course, stay safe during these still exceptional and uncertain times.

A Swimming Pool And Spa That Dreams Are Made Of Creating a haven for peace and tranquillity, this impressive pool and spa is the work of Surrey pool retailer, Falcon Pools Ltd and both fit perfectly into the beautiful garden. The fully tiled pool and concrete spa with its unique hand cut copings complements and, at the same time, enhances its surroundings. Attention has been paid to every detail… and the detail is Certikin. Certikin’s market leading safety cover, the Coverstar was high on the owner’s shopping list. Not only for its safety credentials but because the pool is designed for all year round use and the Coverstar is first class in its heat retaining qualities − it can save up to 70% on heating and chemical costs. Composite decking at the far end of the pool conceals the pit for the Coverstar pool cover and the cover operates simply with the push of a switch. Safety extends to the grab rails and Certikin pool ladders. The Certikin 1.7” ladders are manufactured to comply with the Domestic Pool Standard EN165821:2015. Built using 316 grade stainless

steel, they are supplied with stainless steel antislip treads as standard, as well as the Certikin pinch anchors which give a sturdy, secure installation on all types of pool surround. Other Certikin equipment featured on this pool includes a Bowman heat exchanger, pool fittings (skimmers, inlets, sumps, vacuum point and auto top up unit), pipework, Vision sand filter, Sta-Rite pump, Autopilot salt

generator, Polaris pool cleaner, LED PU6 pool lights, Certikin maintenance kit and Fi-Clor chemicals. Certikin International 01993 777200 www.certikin.co.uk Falcon Pools Ltd 01932 353040 www.falconpools.co.uk

Pool Water Inactivates COVID-19 In 30 Seconds, According To Study A study by virologists at Imperial College London has revealed that swimming pool water can inactivate the COVID-19 virus in only 30 seconds under the right conditions. The findings, which have not been published in a peer-reviewed journal, suggest the risk of transmission of COVID-19 in pool water is incredibly low. Swim England worked collaboratively with baby swimming business Water Babies and the Royal Life Saving Society UK (RLSS UK) to commission the study and provide context and materials for the research. As indoor swimming pools across the country reopened on Monday 12 April as part of the Government’s roadmap to ease lockdown restrictions, Swim England Chief Executive Jane Nickerson hailed the results as ‘fantastic news’. The study into swimming pool water was undertaken by leading virologist and expert in respiratory viruses, Professor Wendy Barclay, together with research associate Dr Jonathan Brown and research technician Maya Moshe from Imperial College London and project managed by

4 April 2021 SPN 4+7+9_SPN_April_21_News_General.indd 4

Alex Blackwell, Head of Pools and Facilities from Water Babies. It looked at the effects of swimming pool water on the virus that causes COVID-19 to assess the amount of time and contact needed to inactivate the virus in varying chlorine and pH levels. The research established that 1.5mg per litre of free chlorine with a pH between 7-7.2 reduced the infectivity of the virus by more than 1,000 fold within 30 seconds. Additional testing of different free chlorine and pH ranges confirmed that chlorine in swimming pool water was more effective with a lower pH – which is in line with current guidance for swimming pool operation. Jane said: “These findings suggest the risk of transmission from swimming pool water is low, and adds to the evidence that swimming pools can be safe and secure environments if appropriate measures are taken.” Swim England 01509 640700 www.swimming.org

IN BRIEF WORK TO START ON MELKSHAM COMMUNITY CAMPUS Alliance Leisure is partnering with Pellikaan Construction Ltd to deliver a £20m community hub in Melksham for Wiltshire Council. In addition to awarding a grant of £1.6m, Sport England played a significant role in the design development stages of the project to ensure the new Melksham Community Campus provides the right leisure facilities to meet the needs of the community. As a result, the new campus will include a six-lane swimming pool and a learner pool, fitness suite, fitness studio and other facilities.

COUNCIL AGREES £150K FUNDING FOR SETTLE AREA SWIMMING POOL Craven District Council has agreed to give Settle Area Swimming Pool £150,000 to help fund a health and wellbeing extension. The Council will also underwrite up to £135,000 by way of a loan, to provide cashflow support to the pool while a community fundraising campaign takes place. Councillor David Ireton, Lead Member for Resilient Communities, said: “I’m delighted that the Policy Committee has agreed to fund this important project. “Settle Area Swimming Pool is a vital facility for the health and wellbeing of communities in the north of the district. “This project will help provide a long-term sustainable future for the pool and will improve the health and happiness of residents – even more crucial as we emerge from the COVID19 pandemic. I look forward to seeing the extension take shape.” The pool has been in operation since 1974 when it was built by local subscription, responding to local concerns about the need for children to learn to swim. It has operated since then managed by trustees and sustained by strong local fundraising and support.

SPATEX 2022 To Return Live And Kicking To Coventry’s Ricoh Arena! Fresh from this year’s £10m refurbishment, Coventry’s Ricoh Arena will once again play host to SPATEX 2022 when it returns to being a live event from Tuesday 1 to Thursday 3 February next year. The announcement, coupled with the imminent lifting of lockdown plus the promise of warmer weather, has added to the feel-good wave of optimism sweeping the industry. Clocking up 23 years at the helm, delighted SPATEX Organiser, Michele Bridle, said: “Whilst February’s SPATEX Virtual presented an excellent online opportunity to connect all in water leisure during a challenging period, there is no substitute for face-to-face business. The team looks forward, with eager anticipation, to staging a special live edition to celebrate bringing the industry together again under one roof.” Much of SPATEX’s business is often continued or conducted outside the exhibition hall, so the addition of a new sports bar will be welcome news both to

exhibitors and visitors. The state-of-the-art bar will be immediately obvious upon arrival as it is to be located by the front door to the complex. Catering for up to 160 covers at a time, it will boast an array of TVs including wall-sized screens as well as interactive games such as table football. A double-sided bar will serve a range of craft beers, cocktails and soft drinks, with plenty of tables for group gatherings. The bar is part of wider improvements planned ahead of the staging of the Commonwealth Games being held in Birmingham in 2022. Taking its name from the event, the Commonwealth Convention Centre will be built in the Ricoh Arena’s lower halls on the south side of the venue and provide visitors with more than 8,000 square metres of impressive conference and exhibition space. Heatstar Technical Support With New QR Codes By using QR codes, Heatstar is helping its customers to access essential product technical information easily for faster troubleshooting. In the future, the specialists in highly efficient swimming pool climate control systems will be expanding the service to include information regarding spare parts too. Heatstar have implemented a new QR code label to help end users easily access technical literature associated with that particular Heatstar system. End users can scan the label with their smartphone QR code reader and link directly to the specific model information on the company’s resources section of their website. Available documents currently include

operations manuals and a touchscreen user guide. “On a daily basis we receive a large number of telephone calls with users asking for technical help, and a lot of the time the answers can be found in the product literature,” said David Hayles, Heatstar’s Technical Director. “Having this new system whereby the user can quickly scan a QR code on the product and find the necessary documents can reduce downtime if there is an issue with the unit and also help ensure the equipment is installed and maintained correctly.” Heatstar 01983 521465 www.heatstar.com

IN BRIEF FIRST SWIMMERS TEST OUT LONDON’S ‘SKY POOL’ The world’s first ‘floating’ pool has welcomed swimmers above the streets of London. The Sky Pool is situated 115 feet from the ground in the Embassy Gardens development in Nine Elms, and it spans two buildings and features a completely transparent base that allows swimmers to feel as if they’re flying high above the ground. The pool isn’t officially open just yet, but will be on 19 May 2021, but the first swimmers have been in to test it, and unsurprisingly, it appears that it offers a unique experience. If you’re worried about heights, you may well want to skip a length or two in its raised waters!

NORTH YORKSHIRE SWIMMING POOL FINALLY TO RECEIVE INVESTMENT A massive £1.26m looks set to be pumped into Richmond swimming pool in North Yorkshire. This is its first major refurbishment in almost 30 years and Richmondshire District Council, will also look to agree to continue the annual running grant of £240,000 to the Richmondshire Leisure Trust. The council owns the facility but has leased it to the Trust since 2005. “This pool is a major facility for the district. People come from across Richmondshire to learn to swim with the Richmond and Dales Swimming Club,” said Leader of the Council, Councillor Angie Dale. “It is also a major asset of the councils and it’s only right that after so many years we allocate some money to bring it up to date and future proof it. With the health and wellbeing of our residents uppermost in our minds as a result of the pandemic this has never been more needed.”

2020 Sales Surge Provides Welcome Boost For Industry

The results of the 10th annual Wet Leisure Survey produced Golden Coast have revealed some fascinating insights into how the sector performed in 2020. Not least of these was the fact that despite – or perhaps because of – the pandemic, the market remained remarkably buoyant with 87% of respondents reporting OK, good or extremely good sales. Hot tub sales in particular soared. The companies that took part in the survey saw a 30% sales increase in the hot tub market. This could be due to the population spending more time at home, with many being furloughed, during an exceptionally warm spring and summer. “Historically the weather has been the biggest influence on what kind of year we have,” said Golden Coast Managing Director Jamie Adams. “Of course, COVID and the initial lockdown impacted everything at first, but we were aided by the sunniest May on record and hottest August in 17 years. “It seems that customers were spending money on their pools and spas to make the most of their

time at home. So it stands to reason that many respondents in the Wet Leisure Survey have reported a boom in areas like installation and maintenance. In fact, above-ground pools also saw their best year ever recorded by the survey.” In terms of sales, 96% were attributed to middle and top-end product ranges, implying many customers were investing in quality. Top-end sales were most prevalent in the South East and South West. Perhaps reflecting a wider uncertainty across society, only 16% of respondents expect business conditions to be extremely good in 2021, while 39% expect them to be good, given that the same contributing factors are unlikely be repeated this year. The full Wet Leisure Survey results are available at wetleisure.com Golden Coast 01271 378100 www.goldenc.com

The ISPE Announce Training Plans For Autumn Now that the ‘roadmap’ is in play and with lockdowns easing, many people will be wanting to catch up on their training and education, and the ISPE will be announcing further details of their Seminars to be held in the Autumn/Winter of 2021. In the meantime, they can already advise that (subject to everything going to plan and with exact details still to be confirmed) there will be two ISPE events which can be reserved now. The ISPE Back-to-Basics/Revision Seminar will take place, at a central venue, probably near Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire, in (hopefully) September. The event is free of charge for all ISPE Students (all other ISPE members and non-members are welcome too for a small charge of £25 and £30 respectively). Each of the four ISPE Tutors will be present to guide delegates through some typical exam questions looking at how marks may be won or lost with examples of good and not so good answers. There are refresher sessions on each of the four subjects (Heating, Chemicals, Filtration and Construction) and questions are positively encouraged.

The ISPE Hands-on Filtration Workshop will take place, probably in November, and in recent years has been held at Plastipack’s premises at St. Leonards-on-Sea, East Sussex. This workshop is open to all ISPE students, members and non-members (£60 for ISPE members – all categories and £80 for nonmembers). The workshop is run by (ISPE pastPresident) Chris Carr, FISPE and (current ISPE President) Phil Barlow, FISPE, with assistance from ISPE Council member, Kim Mumford, MISPE and gives practical instruction on filter stripdown and re-building, pipe fitting, pump stripdown and re-building and in addition there are theory sessions covering pipework installation and sizing, sizing a pump, filter and pipework for a domestic pool, installation and servicing tips, and sizing equipment for commercial pools. To register your interest in either or both events, please contact the ISPE office. ISPE 01603 499959 www.ispe.co.uk

PWTAG’s First Online Conference Reveals Some Interesting Takeaways In March, PWTAG’s first online conference ran as smoothly as the deadly virus which was its subject. It was an ambitious programme which included reports and research from across Europe and the US. It was also an ambitious format – presented live (much of it recorded in advance but taking questions live) with paper sessions and live interactive workshops run in parallel – and a live ask-the-experts session at the end. Some takeaways from the conference included the news from Austria where legislation dictates filtration, dye testing, chlorine residuals, pH, redox – and a 4-log reduction of Pseudomonas aeruginosa within 30 seconds. They favour process control to endproduct control. Dutch researchers have a very direct approach. Jan Bakker observed, COVID-19 tested and health checked swimmers. The only problem was the misbehaviour of young swimmers. This despite disinfection issues, including high chlorate. Maarten Keuten’s team measured aerosols directly. Recreational equipment could quadruple aerosol levels; upping outside air and fan speed could half it again. Christiane Holler reported on the political pressures to reopen pools in Bavaria. When they did, in June last year, distancing was difficult to enforce and there were two COVID-19 cases linked to a spa. Greece was challenging too. Athena Mavridou and colleagues surveyed pool managers – half found hygiene measures difficult to apply and had often failed to install screens. The overall message was clear and one hopes unsurprising. Yes, pools can run safely despite COVID-19, provided disinfection etc are scrupulously attended to and particular care taken with ventilation, hygiene and distancing. Aerosols are the big threat, as everywhere. With an hour of virtual sponsors rooms before the 9.30am start and with a 6pm finish, it was a pretty full-on day. For £40, to all 14 papers and other reports can be purchased directly from PWTAG. PWTAG 01509 640730 www.pwtag.org

Refurbishing Swimming Pool Lockers During Lockdown With a scheduled reopening in April, like many leisure facilities around the country, Bunn Leisure Holiday Park utilised the lockdown period to revamp its facilities at its resort in Chichester, West Sussex. Part of the works included the supply of some new leisure lockers and the refurbishment of the existing lockers for both the wet and dry areas of the swimming pool complex. Here, Helmsman Lockers & Cubicles were appointed to design, supply and install the new units as well as completely overhauling the existing lockers on site over a five day period. The leisure lockers are all three compartments in standard 1,800mm x 300mm wide and 450mm deep banks with an aluminium body and laminated doors in a mix of colours from wenge wood grain to blues and greens to add vibrancy and

colour. Works included replacing hundreds of door springs along with new coin lock replacements, number wrist straps and locker number tags. This was a perfect example of how Helmsman is able to offer an unparalleled after sales service in addition to the manufacture of new lockers. Whether a regular maintenance contract or ad hoc repairs, Helmsman stocks a comprehensive range of replacement parts available for repairs and maintenance. From replacement doors to hinges to numbers through to replacement locking systems and keys, the company can replace, refresh or renew any locker regardless of its original make. Willmott Dixon Wins £15.9m Leisure Contract Willmott Dixon has been awarded a £15.9m contract to develop a new leisure centre in Bingham, Nottingham, on behalf of Rushcliffe Borough Council. The contract win sees Willmott Dixon expand upon its ten active leisure sites across the UK, which result in a combined value of £264m, with support from key partners Parkwood Leisure, Bingham Town Council and funding from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) subject to signing grant funding agreement and the D2N2 Local Enterprise Partnership. The Bingham Arena will feature a 25-metre sixlane swimming pool with seating for 330 spectators to accommodate swimming competitions

10 April 2021 SPN 10_SPN_April_21_News_General.indd 10

and will provide a valuable resource for local schools and swimming groups. The facility also includes a 13 x 7-metre learning pool, a café, two exercise studios, a spin studio, a fitness gym and changing room facilities. A highlight feature of this development is the use of innovative Myrtha Pool technology, a steel-framed pool in comparison to a traditional concrete solution. By optimising the Myrtha Pool technology, Willmott Dixon will be able to provide Rushcliffe Borough Council with a more cost-efficient

solution that will support a shorter build programme for the development and will result in a safer swimming pool installation process. Willmott Dixon is highly experienced in delivering leisure centre facilities having recently completed on site at the award-winning £37m Sports and Wellness Hub at the University of Warwick; a development that has subsequently gone on to become the most energy-efficient leisure centre in the UK. The Bingham Arena and Bingham Enterprise Centre project is expected to complete in May 2022. Willmot Dixon 0115 977 1322 www.willmottdixon.co.uk

PEOPLE NEWS Mark Beer

Celebrating Staff At The Heart Of Golden Coast As a family-run business, leading wet leisure supplier Golden Coast is fully aware that people matter just as much as the products they sell. Indeed, the entire Golden Coast team is regarded as an extended family, working together to provide the best possible support to the trade. It’s why the company is once again demonstrating its commitment to employee loyalty, this time by presenting two staff members, Mark Beer and Andy James, with Loyal Service awards marking ten years at the business. Senior Designer at Golden Coast, Mark Beer said: “I felt really proud receiving this award. It’s nice to be recognised. That said, it certainly doesn’t seem like ten years. I feel like I’m just getting going!” As the resident digital expert Mark leads development of the website and online shop, the latter being one of his earliest projects at Golden Coast. Its creation has gone on to transform the company’s position in the market. Most recently, Mark

has been spearheading brand design for new products due for launch later this year. Also marking a decade at Golden Coast is Technical Engineer Andy James. Not only does Andy provide customers’ support and in-house staff training, but he is also the star of the hugely popular ‘Andy’s Answers’, a series of YouTube videos explaining anything from repairs and maintenance, to troubleshooting and set up, that to date have amassed over half a million views. “We get enquiries from around the world,” he explained. “It’s easier to answer people’s questions in a video where you can get hands-on with the product. A Tribute To Historic Pools Campaigner Gill Wright After a relatively short illness with cancer, Historic Pools of Britain (HPB) have announced the passing of Gill Wright. The awareness surrounding historic pools would not be what it is without the input of Gill who not only founded the heritage organisation, but also provided many of the connections, support and advice that has gone on behind the scenes of projects around the country. Gill began her journey with years of supporting and working for Victoria Baths and, with utter dedication, going through the unique challenges necessary to help secure the future of Manchester’s water palace in which she played an instrumental role. Seeing more and more historic gems around the country being lost, witnessing growing community campaigns to save pools that were under threat and knowing how important they are to Britain’s communities and heritage, Gill believed there was a great deal to be gained by historic pools joining forces, sharing insight, supporting each other and celebrating their important role to the nation’s heritage and so in 2015 came the Historic Pools of Britain organisation. All of the work that Gill has carried out has been with quiet strength and determination, passion and love. Giving a voice to historic pools, she would present their story magnificently and in doing so awakened the public’s realisation of what precious and beautiful community assets they are.

SCP Europe Sees A Historical Transfer of Power!

A historical and moving handover of power took place recently between Sylvia Monfort, SCP European General Manager for 20 years, and Jean-Louis Albouy, whose own career within the company since 1999 should not be overlooked. The pair have been working together for many years – Sylvia at the European Headquarters and Jean-Louis working as Managing Director at SCP France. The handover is the second part of a series of changes to develop SCP Europe. On a consolidated basis, Jean-Louis will continue with the same dynamic, validating internal and external growth, while completing the next stages of the company’s growth. The development and implementation of a new global ERP platform and highperformance digitisation tools, which mobilise more than 100 people from the

12 April 2021 SPN 12_SPN_April_21_People_News.indd 12

POOLCORP Group, will intensify in France and then in Europe after the start of operations in the United States. The opening of new branches and acquisitions remain on the agenda, as well as the increase in storage capacity (a tripling of surface areas is planned). However, a new impetus will be given through major investments planned over the next three years with the aim of increasing productivity and speed in order to move

up a gear. The company have also strengthened their teams at SCP EU HQ, in the IT, Data and HR teams to be able to meet the many challenges that lie ahead in terms of efficiency and productivity. In conclusion, the torch is being passed on, but SCP’s influence will remain, based on the same strong values and attitude. The objective is to capitalise on what has always made SCP Europe a success: to maintain the ‘pure player’ approach by pursuing the 100% B to B distributor model in a European market that has sometimes lacked clarity in its positioning. TLS Announce Four New Plate Geometries

Introducing The New Pro Elyo Touch Heat Pump From AstralPool AstralPool has redesigned its signature heat pump (the Pro-Elyo Inverboost) into the new Pro Elyo Touch. With a revamped design and a more intuitive and practical user interface combined with the same robustness and reliability that characterised the technology of its predecessor, the new Pro Elyo Touch has everything it needs to become a benchmark in the outdoor installation sector. The new Pro Elyo Touch features a redesigned interface to make life easier for the pool owner, with the control screen now located on the front instead of the side of the machine for greater convenience. The display has been upgraded from mechanical and digital to an intuitive wide LED touchscreen with even greater information. Users can see the active operation mode, programme the machine, water temperature, activate/ deactivate the turbo or silent modes, as well as access the system settings. Another new feature is that Pro Elyo Touch has a revamped and updated design. For the new model, AstralPool has opted for more modern and up-to-date lines for the housing, an ABS plastic casing to prevent corrosion, a new injected fan grid and a galvanised steel evaporator protection grid. The environmental impact has also been reduced, with most versions operating with R32 refrigerant, a gas that has a low global warming potential (GWP), high energy efficiency and excellent cooling power. The Pro Elyo Touch is incredibly silent and the range includes eight power levels (from 8.5 kW to 35 kW). Not only that, it also makes it possible to extend the swimming season even in regions with colder climates, since it works at an ambient temperature as cold as -20ºC. 2020 was a challenging year for many, including Thermic Leisure Supplies (TLS) along with their suppliers, but the company and the manufacturers who supply them remain engaged to press ahead with the same target – of providing added value solutions to all their customers with heat exchange needs. For this reason, TLS are proud to announce four new plate geometries, which have been designed through the use of innovative tools and which provide dedicated solutions. Featuring high thermal efficiency and exceptional mechanical performance, these new, compact and efficient units retain all the features of the company’s existing models, which include: • Heat exchanger completely contained within the insulation: minimised thermal losses and condensation, high degree of safety and comfort for those who work

around the heat exchanger. • Low installation costs. • Quick and easy access to the heat exchanger for inspection. • Varying options of stainless steel, titanium plates with Various thicknesses down to 0.4 mm with patented glue free plug in design of NBR and EPDM gaskets. • Moplen, threaded or flanged connections. With the emphasis on sustainability these days, heat exchangers are manufactured from 95% recycled materials. The stainless steel frames to avoid corrosion and long product life with easier maintenance operations make these heat exchangers suitable for both chlorine and salt water swimming pools. PoolBravo – An Allin-one Solution For Managing Pool Water

Certikin’s New Solutions For Easily Cleaning Surfaces With consumer demand for effective, simple cleaning solutions at an all-time high, the launch of Certikin’s Xclear Surface, featuring the latest UV-C technology, is timely. By gently shining the compact and lightweight Xclear device over a surface, it damages the DNA of harmful micro-organisms, such as bacteria and viruses, preventing them from reproducing and spreading. Recent research has shown that UV-C light is also very effective against COVID-19. Simple to use, plug into an electric socket and it is ready for irradiation within 30 seconds. Gloves and face mask are provided, along with a portable battery pack. Suitable for all surfaces from changing rooms to offices, it is far superior to cleaning with detergent which removes some of the microorganisms and viruses, but also spreads them. In addition, chemical cleaning agents can be harmful to health, and pathogenic microorganisms can even build up resistance, in contrast to UV-C radiation.

For use in a more traditional cleaning regime, there’s the Aqua Fingers multi-purpose microfibre broom from Certikin – a product specially designed for fibreglass, tiled and vinyl lined pools, which is also excellent on glass fences, windows, pool covers and pool coping. Cleaning is made easy by the wide surface-area covered by its high-density microfibre chenille attachment, flexible body and curved underbelly, ensuring no nooks and crannies are missed. It features a reinforced neck for long-lasting durability. Certikin International 01993 777200 www.certikin.co.uk

An elegant cover makes PoolBravo suitable for any installation and in addition to safeguarding against accidental liquid loss, preserves the cleanliness of the inner components and ensures their integrity. PoolBravo is a turnkey product available in different configurations to manage the main measurement parameters concerning the treatment of swimming pool water immediately and easily. The LD multiple reading digital system inside PoolBravo gives users complete control over the measurement parameters and over the dosing of chemical products necessary for the compliance with chemical-physical water requirements. It is easy to use thanks to the LCD display and the encoder control knob that makes it simple to browse through the product’s configuration menus. Complete control also comes from the wide range of probes that can measure hydrogen peroxide, oxygen, bromine, chlorine, ozone, peracetic acid and chlorine dioxide. EMEC V series dosing pumps complete the PoolBravo dosing system. ERMES – EMEC’s exclusive online system – enables users to control and regulate the product remotely from any smartphone or PC, meaning the status of the swimming pool can always be under the control of the owner, wherever they are. HOT TUB, SWIM SPA & WELLNESS NEWS

Innovative Welsh Company Shows Its Green Credentials

A Welsh company that pioneered development of water cleaning products to protect people from pool, spa and hot tub infections – by innovatively using British shells – is now also preventing plastic from heading to landfill or the ocean. Pennosan was well placed to respond to the boom in hot tub and pool sales at the start of the pandemic having created a range of natural water clarifiers to help keep people safe. The company’s products are made using crab, langoustine and shrimp shells from around the UK that were destined for landfill. But when the hard outer skeletons of shellfish are specially treated, they produce chitosan, a type of sugar polymer which has a number of commercial and biomedical uses. As well as being a natural product that is wholly biodegradable and 100% allergen free, chitosan is also antimicrobial. Chitosan cleans pool and hot tub water by clumping together floating dirt, oils and dissolved metal particles, which are too small or light to sink to the bottom to be filtered out. Sue said: “Sustainability has always been a driving force behind our business. As well as recycling seashells and putting them to a good use, we wanted to do what we can to help reduce the number of plastic bottles going into the recycling system. “Our products are supplied in recyclable plastic bottles, made from HDPE, with removable labels. Although HDPE can be recycled up to 10 times, the plastic in each bottle has an expected service life of up to 20 years.” It is estimated that around 13 billion plastic bottles are used in the UK every year with only 7.5 billion being recycled. North East Hot Tub Business Gets Multimillion-pound Investment Boost Two friends who built up a multimillion-pound e-commerce business selling inflatable hot tubs during the pandemic have won major investment to grow their company further. Wave Direct (who trade as Wave Spas) was founded in 2019 by Daniel Luper and Tom Jeffrey, and with the lockdown seeing a huge rise in hot tub sales of all types, their inflatable spa brand took off. So much so that the company now have plans to move into overseas’ markets and they have just received investment from Leeds-based investment group Growth Partner. With strategic insight from Richard Harpin, the Growth Partner team have been working with founders Daniel and Tom over the last six months to put in place the foundations of an exciting step-change growth plan which includes

international expansion, new products and new brands. Investment Director Alex Marsh led the deal for Growth Partner and said: “Growth Partner’s goal is to identify, back and support the UK’s most talented and ambitious entrepreneurs to grow market leading consumer businesses and br ands. Daniel and Tom certainly fit into that bracket and they have had an exceptional start with Wave Spas. In a very short space of time, they have launched a really high-quality and innovative range of products, that are fun, affordable, and experiencing strong online growth in demand – all themes that will remain true as they launch into other new outdoor and leisure product categories.” Wave Spas 0191 580 1700 www.wavespas.com

USSPA Hopes To Send Good VIBES To The UK Market

Award-winning Project Is A Unique Spanish Pool Collaboration This pool called Las Palmeras Borguede, located in Xàbia, in the Alacante region of Spain, scooped an award at the Pool Design Awards held by Piscine Global Europe late last year. Normally held in the French city of Lyon, but with the physical event postponed due to the pandemic, Piscine Global Europe is not just another trade fair. The biennial event is hugely important in the European market. As a matter of fact, the Awards were coveted by all businesses in the sector. These prizes bring recognition and showcase quality, beauty and a job well done. The project featuring Ezarri’s mosaic tiles won third prize for ‘La plus belle petite piscine’ (The prettiest small pool) for its quest for excellence and innovation. The pool is equipped with the automated Top Clean system which keeps the pool bottom in a perfect state of cleanliness. The filtration system uses activated glass to achieve better filtration quality and longer-lasting results.

The back massage jets are activated using stainless steel piezoelectric buttons, while LEDs provide colour variety and ensure minimal energy use. Las Palmeras Borguede was created with an Ezarri mosaic by Gunitec, who like the pool itself, are located in Xàbia. This third prize makes Ezarri and Gunitec the only Spanish companies to have won such recognition. The company used the Ezarri Zafiro 3.6 x 3.6m mosaic to tile this marvellous pool and cream Valencian marble for the terraces. Zafiro, from the Ezarri Iris collection, is an iridescent cobalt blue mosaic specially designed for cladding interiors, pools, spas, saunas and wellness spaces seeking a relaxing and pleasant atmosphere. will become even more important in the light of the current situation and in future too!” Further development also includes continuous adaptation of the hygiene and space regulations. Based on the concept ‘Safe Expo – Safe for People. Good for the economy’, Messe Stuttgart is creating a framework for the safe implementation of interbad 2021. “We assume that some of our international participants will still not be able to fully travel again. We are therefore developing the congress and accompanying programme with our partners in such a way that these visitors will also be offered something interesting even if they are unable to come to Stuttgart this year. Our objectives are to facilitate the transfer of know-how and create inspiring encounters both on site and digitally worldwide,” said Project Manager Dagmar Weise.

interbad 21 Will Be A Live Event With A Virtual Component The preparations for interbad – the international trade fair for swimming pools, saunas and spas – have started according to schedule, with floor space being allocated within the event’s two exhibition halls. Scheduled to take part in Stuttgart from 21 to 24 September 2021, under the slogan ‘Water is our element – competence our offer’, the forthcoming edition of the trade fair will also focus on innovative technical trends and creative design ideas relating to swimming pools, saunas and spas. With a qualified safety concept, interbad will be the first industry event this year for operators, builders, planners, tradespeople, service providers, spa managers and hoteliers. Christian Mankel, Managing Director of the German Association for the Recreational and Medicinal Bath Industry (DGfdB), stated: “Everyone involved in interbad is pulling in the same direction. “The success of the trade fair is due to the fact that it is developing continuously and is therefore always up to date. COVID-19 Can’t Mask Our Industry’s Successes With the pandemic still affecting the normal running of our industry, BSPF Managing Director Chris Hayes highlights the effort and achievements from the last year and progress being made, often behind the scenes

I

would like to start this update by repeating a huge thank you to all of the exhibitors, contributors and visitors who supported the SPATEX Virtual show. It is hugely appreciated and a timely reminder about the importance of having opportunities to come together (even online) to keep the industry informed of key updates. But also, for the entertainment through the virtual awards ceremony – for the re-presentation of the 2020 ISPE awards and the announcement of the 2021 British Pool and Hot Tub Award winners. I know talking to a number of members, they were able to celebrate the event with staff in a COVID-secure environment to bring people together, so thank you to you all. In addition, a heartfelt thank you to the entire SPATEX team, my fellow SPATEX Directors and vFairs for providing the online platform to put on the unique, virtual event. Having briefly mentioned the 2021 British Pool & Hot Tub Awards and the re-presentation of the ISPE awards for 2020, my thanks also to Jan Hardy, Sallie LeslieGolding, Isabel Lock and Caroline Cross for their excellent organisation of this Industry event. Jamie Smith (BSPF President), Pete Grinnall (BISHTA Chairman), Richard Carrington (SPATA Chairman) and Phil Barlow (ISPE President) also made a huge difference with their role in announcing the winners. I would also like to thank the sponsors, whose details are below. Further details of all of the award winners can be found on pages 30-36 of this issue.

Each year for the Gala Dinner, we are honoured to be joined by a guest (usually from the world of sport) to announce some of the winners, and this year was no exception, with the hugely inspiring presence of Danielle Brown MBE. For those of you unaware of Danielle’s achievements and her aim this year to be part of a world record attempt, please see page 29 for more details. As in previous years, many of the 2021 British Pool and Hot Tub Award winners will be shortlisted for the European Pool and Spa Awards 2021, hosted by EUSA. Work with both EUSA and WAPSA continues. See the next page for more information about the importance of these links with other national pool and spa associations and the 2021 EUSA awards. Other news from Europe regards the progress of the draft domestic pool standard prEN 17645. Environmental performance efficiency – Performance evaluation, methodology, and classification of the use of outdoor pools and their equipment. Feedback has been provided on this standard by SPATA’s Technical Committee, and both SPATA and BSI are fortunate to benefit from the presence of Will Dando (Plastica) on the relevant European committee (CEN TC 402 WG5). It is envisaged that the feedback on the standard will be addressed at meetings this year, and so it is likely that there will be updates on this standard at SPATEX 2022. Returning to home, with the changes brought about by Brexit, BISHTA and SPATA have been arranging monthly webinars, with the first one focusing on some of the key messages from Hampshire County Council Trading Standards regarding the knowledge expected from companies who are importers. Adam Chambers (who featured in the last issue of SPN) oversaw this session. He provided members with some really useful information and there have already been

some follow-ups from members seeking further advice. A webinar has just been held on lifting equipment used for hot tubs, exercise spas and one-piece pools. Following an incident with a hot tub that fell at height while being lifted out of a garden, although nobody was injured, BISHTA and SPATA liaised with ALLMI and the CPA to draft some guidance to minimise the chances of a repeat incident occurring again. The Association of Lorry Loader Manufacturers and Importers (ALLMI) was founded in 1978 at the request of the Health & Safety Executive. It is the UK’s only trade association devoted exclusively to the lorry loader industry, and its members include manufacturers. ALLMI promotes the safe use of lorry loaders, produces good practice guidance, assists in the formulation of relevant legislation and Standards, and provides a training accreditation service. The Construction Plant-hire Association (CPA) was founded in 1941 and is the leading trade association for this UK sector. CPA Members supply over 85% of hired plant to the construction industry. CPA publishes a wide range of safe-use and technical guidance documents and other publications, including through their special interest groups such as the Crane Interest Group (CIG). All publications are distributed free of charge widely throughout the construction industry to support and promote safety. Webinars will be continuing this year, with a H&S webinar being hosted on Tuesday 20 April. These webinars are free to BISHTA and SPATA members.

Working With Colleagues From EUSA And WAPSA In this latest issue, Chris Hayes illustrates the importance of BISHTA and SPATA having close ties with leading International Associations

B

ISHTA and SPATA are always willing to embrace a challenge – adopting new ways of working to be more effective and efficient. It helps that the ethos of the staff and committee members also fosters this attitude. There is an added dimension that BISHTA and SPATA can reach out to like-minded National Pool and Spa Associations, both in Europe and in other parts of the world, for their feedback. This article explores what working with EUSA and WAPSA brings to the British Isles.

(3 parts), EN 16713 (3 parts), EN 16927, and EN 17125. There is currently work on a draft European standard for prEN 17645 on the ‘Environmental performance efficiency – Performance evaluation, methodology, and classification of the use of outdoor pools and their equipment’. SPATA is also currently contributing to work on public spas and wellness, and this work continues both in Europe and at home (albeit online)!

WAPSA

EUSA The European Union of Swimming Pool and Spa Associations was founded in 2006 and currently has 12 members. The countries represented are National Pool and Spa Associations in Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey and the UK. Historically, meetings would be held twice per year in the President’s country (this role would be shared amongst the members every two years). At the moment, the Presidency is held by the bsw, the German Pool Association. However, due to COVID, there has only been one face-to-face meeting (which was in Brussels, as this is where EUSA is officially registered). Other meetings have been held, all of which have been online via zoom. At the meetings, the main topic of business includes promotion through the annual European Pool and Spa Awards, a monitoring service to assess what is being discussed with the EU institutions, regular sharing of good practice, and technical matters. In its eighth year, the European Pool and Spa Awards have seven categories for domestic pools, spas and hot tubs: outdoor pools, indoor pools, pools by night, pools with an automatic cover, pools with an enclosure, spas and hot tubs. Each year the Awards are held at a European exhibition, which has included aquanale (Germany), Forum Piscine (Italy), Piscine Global Europe (France), Piscina & Wellness (Spain) and SPATEX. The 2020 Awards were announced at the beginning of this year, but due to COVID-19, the presentation has been delayed. The Awards presentation will now be held at aquanale on Thursday 28 October. The 2021 Awards are being presented at Piscina & Wellness on Monday 29 November. Over the years, both BISHTA and SPATA members have benefited from rubbing shoulders with colleagues across

28 April 2021 SPN 32_SPN_EUSA_WAPSA.indd 32

Europe and obtaining invaluable PR from their wins at Bronze, Silver or Gold level. There is great importance in knowing what the EU institutions are considering with regulations and directives that could impact our industry, which is important even though we have left the EU. This is because many supplier members export to Europe and because many installer members rely on European imports. Having a say in what goes on in Europe through EUSA is therefore very useful to ensure our voice is heard to prevent misunderstandings about what is known about our industry. In terms of technical matters, European standards are not EU documents, but they are agreed across the 27 EU Member States and seven other European countries (including the UK). While not necessarily enshrined in law in all European countries, they are always seen as an essential benchmark document when deciding if an issue has arisen and if it is because a standard was not followed. BISHTA and SPATA are very proud of the work undertaken by members of their respective technical committees in helping to develop domestic pool and spa standards, such as EN 16582

The World Alliance of Pool and Spa Associations brings together each of the 12 National Associations within EUSA plus Hungary, Romania, and then also Australia, Brazil, Canada, Mexico, South Africa, and the USA. Having input from these other countries allows some excellent sharing of ideas, and there has been a concerted attempt to seek market data from across the world. An annual meeting has been held, and as a result of the recent (4th) meeting as part of SPATEX Virtual, there is planned to be work on revising the data questions to be asked, including some key safety messages. The main thrust of development work is around education and environmental sustainability. Finding out what works in another country can then lead to items being brought back to our country to put something similar into practice. Having a collective voice also means that an issue in one country (such as drought) can be shared with other countries to learn what messages are effective if the same problem arises in another country. The 5th annual WAPSA meeting is to be held at aquanale in Cologne on Monday 25 October 2021. At this meeting, EUSA colleagues plan to share some ideas on benchmarking the services that each association offers its members, which can provide BISHTA and SPATA with new development opportunities and best practice to bring back to our industry. n Tuesday 2 February, during SPATEX Virtual, the British Pool & Hot Tub Awards took place as an online event for the ‘first time’ since the SPATA Awards began in 1978. With 29 categories to be contested, this year’s winning and highly commended entries demonstrated the breadth of talent and commitment to quality and service in the industry, even when faced with the restrictions of a pandemic! BISHTA and SPATA were delighted to welcome online their special guest of honour, Danielle Brown MBE, to present the top

industry awards. Gina Mellotte was also welcomed as this year’s awards compere. The online awards ceremony was opened by Chris Hayes (BISHTA / SPATA Managing Director), and it began with the re-presentation of the ISPE Awards 2020 by Phil Barlow, the ISPE President. BISHTA and SPATA have been very grateful to Phil Barlow, Jamie Smith (BSPF President), Pete Grinnall (BISHTA Chairman) and Richard Carrington (SPATA Chairman) for their muchvalued support in announcing their respective awards. Thanks are warmly offered to all of the 2021 British Pool & Hot Tub sponsors –

without their support, the awards ceremony would not have been possible! All winners received a personalised press release and local press distribution, digital awards badges, digital awards email/web banners and their framed certificates and trophies (where applicable). A number of them can be seen on this page celebrating their wins in a safe environment. If you could not join BISHTA and SPATA for the presentation ceremony, it is still available to view on the BISHTA and SPATA YouTube channel or from the website homepages www.bishta.co.uk / www.spata.co.uk.

Danielle Brown MBE: Why I’ve Signed Up For A World Record Attempt It began with a new follower on Instagram. @claw_global stumbled across my account, so I fired off a quick message to introduce myself. Within minutes they got back to me, and it became clear that we had similar beliefs around sport’s potential to inspire change. Over lunch, I found myself speaking to the team, and by the end of the call, I had signed myself up for a World Record attempt. I will be part of the largest team of disabled people to scuba dive in the open sea. I’ve never been scuba diving in my life, so this is a big step out of my comfort zone. So why did I decide to team up with CLAW? Sport is a powerful vehicle for change, and the world badly needs changing. Disability is still one of the most marginalised populations in the world. Barriers touch all aspects of disabled people’s lives, which are propped

www.swimmingpoolnews.co.uk 29_SPN_April_21_Awards_Evening.indd 29

up by grossly outdated stereotypes and misunderstanding. All that truly matters is ability – what a person can do – but the sad reality is that this often gets overlooked. Instead, people focus on the wrong thing, judging disabled people by what they can’t do. Without changing our attitudes towards and understanding of disability, we cannot hope to challenge the stigma, prejudice and isolation that still exists in the world. The World Record attempt is just a start, one piece in a complex jigsaw. It is a catalyst for change, a chance to see disability as it truly is. It’s a tough time to set a challenge like this – learning how to dive and finding sponsorship in the middle of a pandemic is hard. I’m excited, and nervous, and determined to see it through. STA POOL PLANT – HOT TUB SAFETY

Hot Tubs – The Risks Following The Lockdown Sales Boom In this article Luke Griffiths STA’s Qualification Development Manager for Pool Plant discusses some of the considerations and risks as a result of the boom in hot tub sales over the last 12 months

W

ith summer on the horizon, many Brits who contributed to the 1,080% rise in hot tub sales on eBay in 2020, compared to 2019, will be dusting off the covers and getting into 2021’s finest swimwear ready to take a long hot soak. The emergence of the inflatable hot tub alternative has made this luxury item accessible to the vast majority of UK residents and last year’s lockdown accelerated the demand. This issue’s article takes a brief look at the associated risks and methods for managing hot tubs in a business setting safely, but much of this is applicable to domestic hot tubs too.

RISK ASSESSMENT Due to the obvious hazards in the operation of hot tubs, a risk assessment must be carried out, including but not limited to: • Entrapment and entanglement • Drowning • Chemical dosing • Bacterial infection. HSG282 ‘The control of Legionella and other infectious agents’ is an essential guidance document by the HSE primarily for those who manage or operate spa pool systems and it explains how to manage and control the risks from legionella and other infectious agents. When developing risk assessments and safe operating procedures for spas and hot tubs, ensure this guidance is utilised. PWTAG also have a book dedicated to hot tubs for business containing some really useful information.

UNIQUE PROBLEMS ASSOCIATED WITH HOT TUBS There are a number of specific challenges when it comes to the effective sanitisation of hot tubs: • Due to aeration and agitation, there will be potentially zero visibility in the water. • Due to the low water content, it is easy to overdose chemicals. • Agitation of the water and its high temperature will cause disinfectant loss.

• Aeration of the water will commonly cause the pH to rise. This is due to water being able to absorb gases until saturation point is reached. Any further gases will then be released from the water. Amongst them will be the carbonate gases including CO2. • CO2 is generally added to lower the pH. Therefore, if CO2 is removed, the pH will invariably climb. • It is likely that there will be two water circulation systems, with the secondary system providing the supply to the water therapy jets. • Ratio of bathers to water volume will be extremely high. • Higher operating temperatures will increase risk of bacteriological growth. Some hot tubs operate at 37°C which should be risk assessed. Higher operating temperatures will cause higher release of bodily fluids, perspiration, fats etc. High temperatures will ‘burn-off’ body fats and cosmetic oils. In any event, higher temperatures up to and above 37°C can provide an excellent temperature for bacteria to multiply. • The risk of biofilm formation in poorly maintained hot tubs is great and particularly for inflatable hot tubs, there is an additional risk of biofilm formation as a result of having awkward to clean areas and the difficulty posed by drying between uses. For the reasons above it is important that water in hot tubs is treated and monitored just as closely as swimming pool water. For hot tubs used in a business setting, the recommended chemical parameters are: • Free chlorine levels between 3-5mg/l • Combined chlorine levels should be kept as low as possible, less than half the free chlorine level and no higher than 1.0mg/l • Total active bromine 4 –6 mg/l • pH between 7.0 and 7.6 (the closer to 7 the better). Furthermore, we need to address the problem of higher relative use by bathers and the

It is, of course, essential that all staff involved in the operation of hot tubs are trained to recognise industry standards, with appropriate risk controls strictly adhered to” www.swimmingpoolnews.co.uk 39_SPN_April_2021_STA.indd 39

higher use of chemicals. One of the items to consider is dilution with fresh water; this is often neglected or ignored which can lead to: • A high level of dissolved chemicals • Fats and oils fouling the filter • Reduction in efficiency of the disinfectant • In bromine dosed spas, high dimethyl hydantoin levels leading to ‘Bromine Itch’. For hot tubs used for business, the total volume of water should be replaced after each group of users or at least weekly – whichever is shorter. It is good practice when refilling to dose to 5mg/l free chlorine in the filled hot tub so the pipework and fittings get a shock dose of disinfectant and the hot tub is not full of unchlorinated water. It is, of course, essential that all staff involved in the operation of hot tubs are trained to recognise industry standards, with appropriate risk controls strictly adhered to. Those carrying out a risk assessment of a hot tub or similar should have the necessary experience and knowledge to do so. STA’s Level 3 Award in Pool Plant Operations qualification – which is CIMSPA professionally endorsed – covers all that operators need to ensure safe, clear and hygienic water practices in pools, spas and interactive water features – very relevant to hot tubs. BISHTA also offers a range of workforce training courses, including Water Hygiene Management training, which are available to non-members and are a membership stipulation. As BISHTA’s logo strapline highlights, the association’s principal focus is to ‘Promote Safe Hot Tub Standards’. Having the right equipment and the correct water hygiene management and maintenance regimes in place is vital. Safety Training Awards 01922 645097 www.safetytrainingawards.co.uk

COMPANY FOCUS Darlly Europe Ltd’s new premises in Telford which they moved into in 2020

Darlly Europe BV’s dedicated storage and distribution centre in Eindhoven

Darlly Remove European Borders With unforeseen logistics challenges rapidly occurring following the UK’s departure from the EU, filter manufacturer Darlly Europe Ltd have expanded and set up a new, dedicated distribution centre in The Netherlands

D

arlly Europe, a leading supplier of pool and spa replacement cartridge filters throughout the UK and Europe, have been forced to create a new, European business – Darlly Europe BV. Set up as a result of shipment and logistic nightmares following Brexit, this entirely new operation located within The Netherlands consists of a dedicated storage and distribution centre for their premium filters and is the answer to trade challenges for the well-known brand. Darlly Europe had only moved to their new premises in Telford just before Christmas when, within months, it became clear that Brexit would not be the smooth, barrier-free, tariff-free affair as promised by politicians. In fact, it was proving far worse than anything feared pre 31 December 2020. Whilst over 200 of Darlly’s dealers are based in the UK and 150 are located in mainland Europe, their European transactions represent over 55% of sales income, with 100% of their dealer base operates within the pool and spa trade sector – a fact the company are very proud of. In addition to Brexit uncertainty, the entire pool and spa industry was severely challenged throughout 2020, with high demand, low supply and operational difficulties due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Director Phil Moseley declared: “We had dealt with the COVID challenge, which in itself had brought a 50% increase in demand. And then towards the end of that year we also moved to a new, much larger warehouse with modern offices and dedicated goods inward and outward with capacity to store over 100,000 filters and handle a throughput of 3,000 filters daily. “With this new set up, we were looking forward, no matter what Brexit threw at us, to our new operation still being able to supply all 27 European countries. Alas, very quickly through January and, frustratingly, into

40 April 2021 SPN 40_SPN_April_20_Darlly_Europe.indd 40

February it became evident moving goods from the UK into Europe was not going to work to the high standard of efficiency our customers had come to expect from us. What’s more, it was proving far more expensive for ourselves and our loyal customers. “Goods that were normally delivered anywhere within the European Union within four days of order, were not taking just weeks, but in some cases months to get there. That’s in addition to the complicated documentation, tariffs and VAT implications.” Darlly’s Gil Gingell added: “The Brexit deal had given UK logistic companies a week (from Christmas Eve to New Year’s Eve) to prepare for EU business, however even after three months, it was apparent, tariffs, customs fees (both here and in EU), the precise details necessary on Commercial Invoicing and the cross-border delays for transport as a result, that we had to quickly move our European business into the European Union itself. “Fortunately, from some long-standing contacts within The Netherlands, we were able to find a well-established, extremely professional transport and fulfillment company based in Eindhoven that currently stores 22,000 pallets and handles eight inward containers daily. Moreover, they were building a brand-new transport and logistics centre, opening in June, that could handle double this amount. “In one move, we had removed documentation red tape, border logjams and higher delivery costs – in fact, deliveries to our EU customers will be quicker and much

cheaper than pre-Brexit. Good news at last!” It is hoped that by the end of April, containers and UK stock will go directly to Darlly’s new partners – Van der Heijden in Eindhoven – which is only a few kilometres from the Tilburg Train Depot. And whilst all order processing and the customer helpline will continue from Telford in the UK, all pallets will be sent direct from Eindhoven across the entirety of the European Union. Trade customers with just small carton orders, not requiring pallet loads, will be directed to Spa Plus based in Bergeijk, who have been a successful Darlly premium distributor for over ten years and they will be charging exactly the same trade prices for cartons, again with much lower shipping charges. Phil concluded: “The other new challenge at the moment to add to COVID and Brexit which, again, is affecting the entire industry, is the Chinese container crisis. “Whilst container costs have quadrupled recently, and the Suez container ship blockage has poured more fuel onto the fire in delaying shipments from one month to three months, there is also a hope that being so close to Tilburg means we can use the extraordinary train service which brings containers directly over land from China to The Netherlands in just over two weeks. “Which gets a huge and thankful nod of approval from us!” Darlly Europe Ltd 01952 580500 www.darllyeurope.com

SWIM SPAS – HIGH-END

High-end Swim Spas For Serious Users Top of the range swim spas have been a niche choice for many in the UK over recent years, but during the pandemic, sales have been boosted. As a training aid, they have become a widely accepted alternative to more traditional pool choices. Many models also offer spa options too, resulting in the complete swim and relax package. Offering the very latest in technology for swimming and more, we take a look at some of the premium choices in the popular swim spa sector By Jon Wadeson

A

s a product that offers the benefits of an effective swimming area combined with the relaxing jets of a hot tub, high-end swim spas have steadily increased in their popularity over recent years but unsurprisingly, they remained somewhat niche when compared to the overall market. That didn’t stop manufacturers expanding their ranges though, after all whilst volumes may not have been high, price tags often were for these flagship products. The pandemic changed that steady progress with many more people taking a closer look at the top of the range models on offer. Competitive pricing and ownership convenience versus more traditional alternatives has resulted in an appeal that has never been stronger for families looking for a premium, multi-use product that can be used by all. But it’s not just families that are taking notice of the various swim spa solutions on offer. Athletes and keep fit fanatics are really the core target market for the majority of these products and many have being tempted by the thorough exercise and post workout relaxation options that are provided by today’s high-end models. So what’s on offer this year at the upper end of the swim spa market? In this issue, we examine just some of the brands and models that are competing at the premium end of the swim spa sector.

combined experience for its users. Thanks to the unique solutions of the counter-current system, it serves as a swimming pool, and after an exhausting swim, users can relax in the separate spa massage section. Two variants of this flagship model are available but it’s the turbine version that really will appeal to those who are looking for the ultimate water-based workout. The W-Power Turbine – instead of the three hydromassage pumps – is capable of propelling 50-160 m3 water per hour. In contrast to standard swim spa pumps, the Rio Grande’s turbine consumes 75% less power while delivering twice the amount of water – that’s incredible performance combined with energy savings. As a relatively new model, the Rio Grande also benefits from the latest in good looks too. Its 5mm fibreglass reinforced acrylic shell is available in Sterling Silver and is complemented by a brushed grey cabinet. Two UV-C water sanitiser and five

antibacterial filters look after the water while two Smart Touch control panels located in each distinctive section of the Rio Grande make operation a simple task. There’s a total of 40 jets on offer in the Rio Grande’s spa section and chromotherapy lighting, aromatic therapy and a swim tether all come as standard.

THE ATV™ RANGE FROM MARQUIS® ACCOMMODATES EVERY NEED Marquis®’ Aquatic Training Vessels™ (ATVs™) were created to elevate the swim spa experience and provide a more convenient option for aquatic training. They are true action vessels for the whole family to enjoy all year-round and allow for a more spacious swim and workout space than comparable rectangular swim spas. Whether they’re used for training, rehabilitating or spending time with loved ones, an ATV will accommodate every need. The Marquis ATV line includes four

POWERFUL PERFORMANCE – THE RIO GRANDE TURBINE FROM WELLIS Wellis produce a number of swim spas models and they are available in the UK through Wellis direct and SCP UK. Sitting at the top of their range is the Rio Grande which was refreshed in 2019. This large swim spa measures 6,000 x 2,350mm and as with all models in the Wellis range, it has a generous depth of 1,470mm. Considering the space required for a traditional swimming pool, it could easily be viewed as the perfect highlight of a wellness section. The Rio Grande swim spa provides a

SWIM SPAS – HIGH-END models including the larger 17 foot ATV-17 Kona and ATV-17 Sport topping the range. The ATV-17 Kona is the ‘big dog’ though. The ATV-Kona has three pumps like the ATVSport models, but offers higher performance with two dual-speed 360 GPM / 1,363 LPM pumps and one dual-speed 160 GPM / 606 LPM pump to create a flow rate of 1,000 GPM / 3,785 LPM! The Kona offers worldclass swim training and conditioning for the ultimate challenge. The innovative Kona exclusive Whitewater-4™ jets provide a wall of water to maximise the swim pace options and workout rigor. Class 4 white water is known as ‘advanced’ in the outdoor sports world. With Whitewater-4, users will feel the flow difference. The Kona’s exclusive system design actually uses the Whitewater-4 jets to deliver water flow beyond the volumes created by the pumps, delivering up to 39% more flow than comparably sized jets available anywhere else in swim spas. The Kona ATV also offers a pair of midvessel Buoyancy jets that will deliver mid to lower torso lift during swim exercises. This provides a unique alternative dynamic to the body position in the water during a workout.

Design & Leisure. With well over 30 years of experience in the sector, the company are well known for producing some of the most efficient, powerful and beautiful models that money can buy. With all the knowledge gained over the years, Catalina have adapted their range of swim spas to remain at the cutting edge of innovation. They produce one of the largest ranges available, with models from 12 feet (3.8m) all the way up to 21 feet (6.4m), and they have even been known to produce swim spas for other spa brands. At the top end of the Catalina range, Dual Temperature swim spas are featured.

These provide separate areas for swimming and for relaxing. With each side controlled independently, users can set a cool temperature for a swim in the pool and warm water for hydro massage in the spa. Models in this category include the Relay 18, Marathon 18 and Catalina’s flagship model, the Olympic 21. The company also offer the Atlantic 21 one-piece self-contained pool, which has the largest swimming area of any of their models. Catalina’s largest swim spa models are an area where they have seen huge growth over recent years, with customers opting for the more cost effective and energy efficient swim spas over a traditional pool. The benefits don’t stop there either – owners can also use a swim spa all year round, thanks to its built in heater and high levels of insulation. They are much easier to install and maintain too, and owners don’t have to give up a huge area of garden to install one. And if that wasn’t enough, a ten year warranty gives purchasers peace of mind, knowing that their investment will give years of trouble free use. Catalina’s flagship model, the Olympic 21 has proved highly successful for Aqua Design & Leisure

SWIM SPAS – HIGH-END THERMALS PRO SWIM SPAS PROVIDE A PROFESSIONAL AQUATIC WORKOUT The recently launched Thermals by Superior Wellness range includes a range of swim spas, but for those looking to exercise seriously, the Pro Swim Spas are the models that will get most attention. Measuring the same size, the dual-zone Apollo and single-zone Athena have been designed around a state-of-the-art propulsion system with a professional workout in mind. With these advanced devices, users have all the options at their finger tips. A leisurely relaxing swim, high-intensity workouts or just relaxing in the water with friends, these swim spas can do it all. Thermals PRO Swim Spas are available in a number of shell, cover and skirt colours and a selection of further configuration options means a high degree of customisation is available. The Thermals propeller and swim pump system can produce a broad, deep and powerful waterflow without adding air and at an extremely low noise level. Specifically designed diverters in the water outlets create an ideal swimming environment, even for ambitious swimmers. For the PRO Swim Spas series, the manufacturer developed a dedicated low pressure backwater system. Unlike traditional water suction systems, PRO Swim Spas feature generously proportioned water inlets which drastically reduce the flow speed through the water suction inlets. Not only does this almost completely eliminate undesired currents, but it also contributes to a unique, ocean-like swimming experience. Both models can also be upgraded to include a treadmill too. This high-tech option greatly improves the sense of technology of

these two PRO Swim Spas, and increases the interest as well as function of them. The underwater treadmill is driven by hydraulic pressure and running speed can be adjusted by the control panel from one to nine levels – from one kilometre per hour to eight kilometres per hour – making the option suitable for users with very different needs.

INNOVATIVE OPTIONS ARE ALL INCLUDED WITH PASSION SPAS The new swim spa designs from Passion Spas combine the company’s exclusive Current-Lift Technology and provide some of the most innovative spa massage techniques ever developed. Spirit, Vitality and Energy models – along with their ‘deep’ variants – all feature this technology combination. In fact, with these models, Passion Spas have combined all of their unique massage therapy innovations into a single swim

spa. Aqua Rolling Massage™, Intense Therapy Zone™ and Therapy Wave Zone™ are all included in these three models, giving users a full menu of therapy choices. In addition, because the swim and spa sections are separate, users can vary the temperatures between the two units, experiencing a lower temperature workout in the swim lane before soothing tired muscles in the hot water of the spa. The Dual Zone heating systems in the Spirit, Vitality and Energy swim spas allows the best of both worlds – swimming and relaxing in a single spa product! The Energy is the largest model that Passion Spas produce and it’s closely followed by the Vitality. Both of these models measure in excess of seven metres in length, so if space isn’t an issue but creating an impression is, with so many innovative features included, they‘re sure to receive a lot of attention in showrooms and beyond!

POOL LINERS & SYSTEMS

Superb Lining Solutions For Projects Both Big And Small With liner pools still being the most popular type of pool in the UK, there will always be a demand for a variety of lining solutions for both new build or refurbishment projects of any size. So whether big or small, the good news is that the days of limited choice are well and truly in the past thanks to an everexpanding offering of high quality and durable manufactured and on site options. So what’s available for the 2021 season? We examine some of the options By Jon Wadeson

T

here are various ways to transform any kind of swimming pool from an unsightly vision to welcoming oasis of calm, but one of the simplest and most effective ways for both outdoor and indoor liner pools is a complete refresh of the interior – and for the vast majority of pools across the country, that means some form of new lining. More often than not, that means a new pool liner and each season, the quality and range of designs, colours, patterns and now textures that are available increases, meaning pool owners who wish to transform or renovate their pride and joy can do so fairly quickly and at a relatively low cost. “Whether it’s a factory made ‘bag’ liner or a heavy-duty site applied liner, the range and quality of swimming pool vinyl linings has come on in leaps and bounds in recent years,” said Certikin Product Manager, Craig Williamson. “The strength and durability of pool vinyl has increased enormously thanks to the application of improved protective lacquers which, when combined with high quality inks and colourings, improves stain and abrasion resistance, reduces plasticiser migration and helps combat UV degradation.” It goes without saying that these products

are suitable for new projects, but they really come into their own with refurbishment pools, both big and small as a new pool lining whether produced in a factory or applied on site has the ability to give used pools the chance to impress again and often gives them the appearance of being ‘nearly new’ again. Regardless of size, style or aesthetic requirement, there’s sure to be a liner or lining solution that ticks all the necessary boxes and over the next few pages, we take a look at just some of the available options.

CREATE A BEAUTIFUL AND UNIQUE POOL WITH AQUAFLEX SYNERGY Aquaflex is proud to provide the UK swimming pool industry with Alkorplan approved site lining teams to cover the ever growing commercial and domestic swimming pool market. Site lining is the perfect solution for non-uniform shaped pools and offers a cost effective solution compared to other finishes such as ceramic tiles. With an expanding range of 1.5 and 2.0mm site lining patterns, customers have a variety of choices ranging from natural and ceramic embossed designs to conventional

standard patterns used widely in the commercial market. Aquaflex also produces .750mm pretailored liners in their 22,000 square foot factory in Salisbury, Wiltshire where they have a strong reputation for complex designs and non-conventional steps and features. With a design team that has the skill and the experience to incorporate new, revolutionary designs, they strive to push the boundaries of what can be achieved with liners. One of the company’s popular innovations is their Synergy offering. This perfect blend of Aquaflex pool lining system and ceramics offers a unique and beautiful combination, transforming any pool and giving it a sophisticated and elegant look. The installation of Aquaflex Synergy is similar to that of the company’s normal pool lining system but with the additional installation of a 300mm heavy weight PVC coated metal profile around the top perimeter of the pool. Once the pool has been lined, using a special adhesive, ceramic tiles are laid onto the PVC coated metal. A customer’s chosen tiles are then grouted in the normal way, achieving a beautiful tiled finish at the waterline of the pool. Aquaflex’s large range of lining system materials can be married with any complementary ceramic tiles. So create something beautiful and request a quote now for the Aquaflex Synergy, simplicity at its best.

CERTIKIN’S COMPREHENSIVE LINING PORTFOLIO COVERS ALL OPTIONS Certikin sources pool vinyl from three of the world’s leading pool vinyl manufacturers – Elbtal Plastics, Canadian General Tower and Renolit. All vinyls are specifically formulated for use in swimming pools and meet all the required standards. Every Certikin factorymade liner comes complete with a free-of-

charge Certikin fittings kit and is securely packed in a re-enforced card fibre drum for ease and safety of handling. Over recent years, the company’s traditional classics have been joined by liners featuring vibrant colours, photographic printing, metallic, pearlescent finishes and engraved finishes that offer a natural stone look. The finished look can be unique, classical, dramatic or plain and simple. Each can be combined with a contrasting or complementary anti-slip material for steps and slopes (many of which are an exact match to the main pool pattern). There’s also much more variety in commercial grade materials and the site applied lining option is now increasingly popular with domestic owners due to its durability. Certikin’s Infinite range uses a 1.5mm – 2mm three ply product compared to the traditional single ply 0.75mm vinyl used for factory made liners. The range of colours and patterns means that a tile effect (e.g. the Renolit ‘Ceramics’ range offers a very authentic real tiled effect) can be re-created to look very authentic and areas of

commercial sector. When it comes to selecting the best swimming pool liner cost and longevity have to be considered and they recommend Glass Reinforced Plastic (GRP) or Polyurea for providing the best value for money on a like-for-like cost comparison over the years. Both materials are extremely durable and have a life expectancy of 25-35 years. Each is flexible too, however, Polyurea offers a much higher degree of flexibility so it’s perfect for pool shells with high movement. Unfortunately, due to its fast setting nature, the finish needs to be speckled so it looks uniform plus it is the highest priced lining system on the market so the company has found many owners and operators have opted for their GRP solution. Using their GRP Lining system, the company are able to make swimming pool liners water tight, seamless and resistant to any chlorine added to the pool water. Using only the best-formulated materials on the market, two layers of 450 chopped strand matting with chemical resistant tissue is perfect for lining pools. It forms a superb bond to most substrates and moulds to the shape of your existing liner. The final Gel Coat can be in any colour from the BS or RAL colour range and lane lines, which again can be whatever colour is required, can even be added.

POOL LINERS & SYSTEMS COLOUR UNIFORMITY AND FLEXIBILITY A BIG PLUS FOR AQUABRIGHT™ Looking to provide a solution for problems often found with traditional pool finishes, ecoFINISH began creating batch bespoke polymer powders specifically developed for the ease of use for the installation process of flame spray coating. The company began by developing flexible polymer powders to be used for flame spray industries and created a patented process for installing their finish on concrete swimming pools. This finish was made to withstand the abuse of underwater conditions, was long-lasting, and did not crack, chip or peel. This was the beginning of their aquaBRIGHT™ swimming pool finishes. One of the huge benefits to using aquaBRIGHT is colour uniformity. When compared to coloured masonry finishes, the product provides a more uniform colour across the entire swimming pool and as the pool ages, the installation of an aquaBRIGHT finish will not ‘mottle’ or fade in larger blotchy clouds. In addition, for some pool finishes, there can be great variations in cost, depending on the colour chosen. Sometimes the difference can be so great it becomes the sole determining factor in choosing the colour scheme for a pool. Every standard installation of residential and commercial aquaBRIGHT finishes are available at a single, low price, meaning owners can choose what they like and not what they can afford! Naturally, aquaBRIGHT is therefore available in a variety of colours, and once installed, the finish is immediately cured meaning the pool can be filled that day, the next day or the following week.

All Plastica’s liner material is available in 0.50mm or 0.75mm, impregnated with algaecide and antioxidants and patterned materials are protected with a lacquer coating to extend the life and colour of the product. Co-ordinating tile bands are triple coated with lacquer to help prevent staining at the waterline, and a variety of beading colours is available to complement a liner. Plastica liners are produced at the UK’s largest and most established swimming pool manufacturing facility. The company can also weld bespoke designs as well. All Plastica liners are embossed with a serial number relating to that order, so future replacements are quickly quoted for and re-fitted with ease. Plastica’s Extreme™ Pool Lining system has been used for on-site lining for over 3,000 pools in the UK and abroad. Pat Devaney, the Extreme™ Manager, said: “It’s the ideal solution for renovating leaking commercial and residential pools, as well as new builds. The benefit of this system is that, with no

curing or drying time to wait for, the average domestic pool would be re-filling after three days. Installation can be undertaken any time of year, regardless of the weather.” Plastica’s Extreme™ liners are guaranteed for pools for ten years up to 32°C, as well as five years for hydrotherapy use up to 35°C. ONE-PIECE & FIBREGLASS POOLS

Convenience Still Rules With One-piece Pools The LPW pool brand is a popular choice on the continent and is making its mark via Fairlocks Pool Products within the UK too

With quality materials and finishes combined with the benefits of faster installation and minimised disruption, one-piece pools are the perfect solution for a hasslefree pool build experience and like many wet leisure options, have been a popular choice during lockdown. Add in some impressive warranties for peace of mind and it’s easy to see why they have been embraced by both owners and installers alike. This issue, we discover what’s available in the one-piece pool sector By Jon Wadeson

D

emand in the UK for one-piece swimming pools was expanding right up until the pandemic struck – and then there was a small pause – and then they really took off! It seems the thought and then reality of lockdowns combined with uncertainty over international holidays was a tipping point for many across the UK. For those with large enough spaces, swimming pools in a variety of shapes and sizes were turned to, and one-piece options ticked lot of boxes for many people. Beyond these hopefully temporary circumstances, the popularity of fibreglass and one-piece options can mainly be put down to one very important attribute – convenience – and that includes quick delivery (under normal circumstances), relatively straightforward installation and low ongoing maintenance costs. The benefits don’t end there though. Mix in some truly stunning modern looks, competitive pricing and

www.swimmingpoolnews.co.uk 55-58_SPN_April_2021_One_Piece_Pools.indd 55

fantastic peace of mind warranties and it’s a package that’s pretty hard, if not impossible to beat. With fittings and equipment in place and ready to go direct from the factory, they cause the minimum amount of fuss and disruption during installation – and that’s a huge benefit, especially in what are already testing times, and something that should not be under estimated. If time really is money, it’s no great surprise that both installers and consumers are increasingly embracing them as a cost-effective and hassle-free options. There’s now also such a wide range of finishing options that each pool can be customised to meet the needs of even the most particular and demanding customers. In short, it’s difficult to identify any real downsides to these one-piece wonders which can often provide their owners with up to 50 years of fun and service. Even access

challenges are rarely an issue thanks to an array of creative delivery methods plus options to split the pool and join it again on site. In short, one-piece pools provide an impressive and hard to ignore list of benefits versus other more traditional pool options and for many, it’s a something that’s just too tempting to ignore – especially when there’s uncertainty surrounding travel and holidays – and manufacturers will likely struggle to keep up with the demand for them. So what’s available? In this issue, we discover what’s on offer in the sector.

SEVERAL FACTORS COMBINE IN NIVEKO’S MONOPOOL SUCCESS It is no coincidence that NIVEKO’s high-tech polymer monopools are so well-liked amongst both suppliers and owners, and there are several important factors that make them

ONE-PIECE & FIBREGLASS POOLS When it comes to LPW, the unique design enables the added advantage for the pools to be fitted with the Covrex Automatic Slatted Cover system

There are several important factors that make NIVEKO’s monopools a popular choice

a popular choice. As NIVEKO monopools are always custom made for each client, the company are able to cater to individual dreams and wishes, right down to the very last detail. Unlike with many mass-produced pools, there are no restrictions as regards shape or uniform design – each pool that leaves the NIVEKO production hall is unique and accentuates the owner’s personality. The installation of a NIVEKO monopool is a quick and easy process – the pool leaves production with everything prepared, to ensure that the installation goes as smoothly as possible. The pool is also delivered precisely to schedule, which saves on installation costs. During the installation process the pool is concreted in, which ensures that it retains its shape perfectly, however, unlike with some traditional pools, there are no concerns regarding sensitivity to climate conditions when a NIVEKO pool is installed. There are seven pool types in the

comprehensive NIVEKO pool portfolio – two skimmer variants and five overflow designs – and the theme of a pool that will fulfil the wishes of its owner down to the finest detail is reflected in the range. NIVEKO’s line-up covers a diverse selection of pools, from the proven and simple Skimmer Top Level type through to designs suitable for more demanding users, which include the Infinity Overflow. Each type has its own qualities and characteristics, with each suited to a different environment. As regards the pool itself, there are six colours to choose from and it goes without saying that the firm offers various design options for entering the pool. To accompany its pools, the company also offers exclusive components of the highest quality, design and functionality with their NIVEKO Plus series. The recessed, builtin stainless-steel elements of this concept are another piece in a unique jigsaw puzzle tailored precisely to suit each customer.

LPW’S ONE-PIECE POOLS – MAKING MEMORIES FOR LIFE With over 55 years of experience and innovating design of one-piece solutions, the LPW pool brand is a popular choice on the continent and is making its mark via Fairlocks Pool Products within the UK too. The pools are manufactured as a single, complete pool shell that can be lowered into a pre-prepared hole in the ground. A strictly controlled construction process ensures the pools are built to the highest quality. With an insulating honeycomb structure forming the core on which there are six layers of vinyl ester resin with further glass fibre support, the reinforced structure provides strength and rigidity as well a high degree of insulation. Uncompromising quality control throughout the process enables LPW to ensure every customer gets the best out of Belgian knowhow and experience too. This gives LPW the confidence to offer the only lifetime guarantee available in the market today – how

IN AT THE DEEP END WITH MERMAID AND NIVEKO!

Given the brief to create a family sized pool with a deep end, the beautiful one-piece NIVEKO pool, with its huge versatility, instantly came to mind for Kent pool dealer, Mermaid Pools. Supplied through Certikin International, NIVEKO custom-built monopools combine all the benefits of a concrete pool with those of a traditional one-piece pool, offering high-end aesthetics, bespoke design and speedy installation. The brand’s exclusive construction guarantees no osmosis, a problem often associated with its fibreglass equivalents. All NIVEKO pools are preplumbed and pressure tested at the factory, ready to plug and play with the customer’s filtration system. Mermaid’s Steve Russell said: “Along with a deep end, the customer requested a pool with a modern contemporary look, so I immediately thought the NIVEKO custombuilt monopool fitted the bill.” A stunning 9.5m x 4m pool, with a depth

varying from 1.5m to 2m, was duly installed without any hitches, to form a centrepiece in the garden. Steve used Certikin to supply all the additional equipment. “The project took around four months to complete. As this was a winter build, there were some stoppages for the weather but there were no problems having it ready for

the summer,” added Steve. “The client has told us on several occasions that she is over the moon with it and delighted they made the decision to have a pool.” Certikin International 01993 777200 www.certikin.co.uk

The Tilestone self-supporting 100mm box carbon steel frame enables the pool to be installed above or below ground and sectional pool structures are also available. Available as a skimmer, overflow or infinityedge type pool. A wide range of standard sizes is available to choose from, although a custom buildt surface is offered for more particular requirements. A standard Tilestone pool is rectangular in design with a pool depth of 1.5m, although this can be adjusted. The maximum length available in one-piece is 11.5m x 3.70m. The rectangular shape allows for the best fitting of a variety of slatted or fabric safety covers, and the fully-insulated wall and sides will considerably reduce energy running costs. A unique manufacturing process ensures the construction of Tilestone pools is 100% waterproof, with no structural leaks, and will not corrode over time like steel or RC. The flexibility of the pool – compared to concrete – allows for greater resistance against thermal or physical stresses, and structural failure is virtually unheard of. Each pool is perfectly constructed in factory controlled conditions to create a higher level of quality and consistency than found in gunite on site construction. Combining the beauty and strength of the Tilestone City Pool, a new ‘Ultra-flow’ model was launched last year with the model incorporating a counter-current system to produce a realistic river smooth like current with variable speed.

AUTOMATIC DOMESTIC POOL COVERS

Automatic Pool Cover-ups Providing Safety And Style The installation of a pool cover is an obvious and logical step to make domestic pool ownership ‘greener’ and reduce running costs. Automatic pool covers go a step further by providing an effortless and stylish solution with the additional benefits of safety built in. With further innovations and numerous brands in the sector, there’s now more choice than ever and we take a closer look at what’s on offer in 2021 By Jon Wadeson

ith so many companies now operating within the sector, when it comes to automatic pool covers, there’s a wide array of brands, materials and colours to choose, meaning even the most discerning of clients are bound to find the perfect solution. Automatic options are a great choice for domestic pools, saving their owners both time and effort in terms of maintenance, plus they make opening and closing the pool as simple as pushing a button. Technology wise, they are fully up to speed too, with many being controllable remotely from a smartphone or similar device. These covers are as varied as they are dependable with manufacturers constantly seeking ways to improve their offerings both in terms of quality and operation. With plenty of options on offer, this issue, we take a look at some of the stylish coverups that are available for the domestic market in 2021.

TOP OFF ANY POOL WITH AQUATOP FROM T&A T&A’s AquaGuard next generation safety cover is gaining success rapidly as more and more customers become convinced of its benefits. The cover closes the pool hermetically and thanks to the buoyancy of the water underneath the fabric, it will provide safety for both children and adults. Available in both white and anthracite grey, the control unit of the hydraulic drive has also optimised and the cover can now be controlled using an attractive and user-friendly

touchscreen. The control unit is equipped with relay outputs to control the dosing of chlorine and/or the speed of the filtration pump based on the position of the cover. If a smart, slatted option is required, T&A’s AquaTop automatic pool cover comes with a control box Version 6G and COVERU app. The company’s control box is well-known for its reliability and user-friendliness with programmable options enabling owners to connect and control supplementary devices. The control box can also be easily connected to intelligent pool controls (e.g. OSPA, Propulsion etc). As T&A do not make use of any specific protocol, their control unit is compatible with all house automation systems too. With the user-friendly T&A COVERU app, the AquaTop slatted cover can now be controlled using a smartphone. The app allows adding multiple users but grants the administrator full control over the assignment of specific rights to each person. All activities are logged and based on personally selected alarm indicators, and users can monitor all activities remotely. Thanks to a personal code, unauthorised use of the cover is avoided. The COVERU app works in combination with T&A’s COVERU controller which needs a 230V AC power supply (adaptor included) and needs to be connected to a local Wi-Fi network.

UK MADE ENSURES QUALITY AND AVAILABILITY FOR AQUATRAC Aquatrac is the longest established and one of most widely respected safety cover manufacturers, and their covers boast several

unique features. The company is British owned and their products are UK made with the majority of parts manufactured and assembled in the company’s factory in Essex – this guarantees product quality and availability. The Aquatrac high impact extruded UPVC tracking system is the only one of its kind and is available in a choice of colours and offers a far superior finish to the more commonly used aluminium tracks. In addition, it doesn’t suffer from corrosion or deterioration caused by swimming pool chemicals and is covered by a ten year fair play warranty. In addition to their standard range, Aquatrac are now able to offer a number of design variations mostly related to leading edge beams, pit finishes and track levels. These have been introduced to accommodate the multitude of tile finishes and freeboard details commonly required today. The Aquatrac cover itself is high gloss UV resistant PVC, encasing a high tensile polyester mesh which provides a safe insulating barrier to a pool. It is available in a wide choice of colours as standard and carries a seven year warranty. The drive unit has been developed over 30 years and is one of the most reliable available. The low voltage unit is supplied via cable from the control panel in the plant room. There are no dangerous electrics near the pool and no hydraulic hoses filled with oil either. The drive unit is also covered for up to ten years by the fair play warranty. Lastly, Aquatrac’s pull cords are high tensile stainless steel stranded wire, far

POOLLOCK’S SOLID SAFETY BARRIERS Due to their many years of experience designing and producing automatic covers, PoolLock is able to work with domestic customers and architects to create tailored solutions to cover almost any kind of pool. The company’s unique hydraulic-drive system means that the customer does not need any electrical components near the pool. The electrical power pack used to operate the cover and drive the two hydraulic motors can be placed as far from the pool as required. Opening and closing the pool is as easy as turning a key switch, which means that the cover (and the pool) are actually used once installed. PoolLock safety covers provide a solid barrier between the water and surrounding area, effectively preventing any access to the water and making them some of the safest covers on the market. In addition, all PoolLock covers will reduce the amount of heat, water and chemicals lost through evaporation, which means pool owners can save money on electricity and chemical usage. In addition to the standard fabric options, PoolLock also offers HeatLock Thermofoam canvas with enhanced insulation properties. Thanks to the foamed insulation layer applied to one side of the canvas, heat transfer across the membrane is reduced by a factor of 3 when compared to standard fabrics for similar applications. HeatLock’s closed-cell foam structure ensure that PoolLock covers are not only the safest, but also the most energy-efficient available on the market. PoolLock Automatic Covers offer customers the safest, most convenient, most reliable and energy-efficient way to cover the pool. With over 30 years of experience, and installations in over 20 countries, PoolLock is one of the world’s leading manufacturers and suppliers of automatic safety and slatted covers for swimming pools.

COVREX® SOLAR AND COVLOCK ENHANCE THE FAIRLOCKS RANGE Available from Fairlocks Pool Products, the Covrex® Solar automatic swimming pool cover can offer increased energy efficiencies for a domestic pools through the use of innovative solar technology. The thermal specifications increase heat conductivity from the sun to the water to retain the temperature, meaning a pool equipped with a Covrex® Solar cover solution needs much less energy than a traditional cover to heat the pool water. Installing a solar cover like this can provide substantial cost savings in terms of heating, plus the level of pool water evaporation is decreased and there is a reduction in the use of chemical products and maintenance needed too. The covers are constructed using superior materials and they demonstrate substantial quality for both existing pools and new builds. Covrex® Solar slats are produced in polycarbonate, which makes them much more resistant to shocks or hail and generally more long-lasting than traditional PVC slats. Covrex® Solar slats have a clever anti-algae structure directly integrated in the slat profile which makes sure the cover stays clean for a longer period. Its specific structure prevents UV sun rays to enter the hollow

chambers, and therefore reduces the speed of algae creation. The silver finishing coating will ensure condensation inside the slats is almost invisible. New for the 2021 season, Fairlocks have also introduced CovLock – an automatic cover that combines comfort and safety. This cover is completely waterproof around the whole cover perimeter, so any pool will stay clean in summer and winter alike. Made in France, each CovLock is completely automatic and is fully compliant with the NF P 90-308 Standard (tested by LNE). Four types of rails suitable for all pool types are available with four track options, automatic hydraulic motors, plus a choice of seven colours.

CERTIKIN’S ROLDECK – LEADING THE WAY IN AUTOMATIC COVERS SINCE 1973 The Roldeck Easy Cover for deck mount installations has become increasingly popular in the last couple of years. Available as a solar powered or full electronic system, it is an ideal solution if space around the pool is limited as the two end stands are slim and discreet. It is suitable for pools up to 12m x 6m and comes with an in-roller motor. Very competitively priced, it is available with a wide variety of slat colours to choose from, plus it is easy to install and operate. Simply turn the key, which is positioned on one of the slim side consoles, to open and close the cover. For added safety, the key can be removed when the pool is not in use. The solar powered version features a solar panel to benefit from free and eco-friendly solar power. No additional power cables are required. This allows the Easy Cover to be installed effortlessly on both new and existing pools. The Roldeck Easy Cover has a long battery capacity and will run the full programme 20 times without any solar recharging. Should the battery run empty, the Easy Cover has an integrated connection for the (optional) battery charger on the side console. Roldeck’s standard PVC slats come in white, blue, cream, grey, solar and

The translucent slats allow underwater lighting to shine through. The PC60 polycarbonate slats are available in solar, crystal clear or aluminium look.

SCP OFFERS STYLISH, EUROPEAN COMPLIANCE WITH ABRIBLUE Distributed in the UK by SCP, there is an efficient, sustainable and safe cover solution in compliance with the French Norm NF P 90-308 – the range produced by Abriblue. To give a general overview of the safety requirements introduced by standard NF P 90-308, these are the main points which mean that a cover can be considered as a ‘safety cover’: • The cover must be constructed as to prevent a child under the age of five falling into the water plus a child must not be able to get underneath the cover • The cover must be able to withstand the weight of a 100 kg adult • The systems of fastening the cover onto the pool deck must not be liable to injure or cause a child to fall • The cover must not cause any injury to a child trying to manipulate it • For automatic slatted covers, the starter system must be lockable and child-proof. Three of their popular models are the OPEN AERO, OPEN SOLAR 2 and IMM’AX Cover. The OPEN AERO connected automatic cover is more than a safety cover. It features all the technical advantages of the OPEN CLASSIC above-water slatted pool cover but boasts a new design, adjustable integrated ambient

lighting, and above all, a remote connection, so is controllable from a smartphone. The new OPEN SOLAR 2 cover is easy to install, environmentally friendly and ideal for existing pools. It is a compact deck solution to secure a pool and needs eight hours of sunlight to fully charge the batteries. Lastly, there’s the IMM’AX Cover – a motorised, submerged slatted cover providing the ideal balance between safety, functionality, discretion and aesthetics. This automatic safety cover has axial motorisation and features NON’CO material and electronic endstop sensors. This cover is controllable from a smartphone too.

UPGRADE SAFETY AND STYLE WITH DEL FROM GOLDEN COAST Customers can now choose colours that suit their pool thanks to the ever-popular range of DEL automatic pool cover systems — available exclusively in the UK from Golden Coast. DEL covers can be made from either opaque PVC slats, which come in grey, white, beige or blue; or from solar polycarbonate slats, which are available in six colours. These use the sun’s rays to heat a pool effectively, enabling the owner to reduce their dependency on electric heating. As the latest addition to the range, the DEL Tixit automatic pool cover has already made a big impact on the market. It is designed with elegant, modern end stands to ensure that the pool cover easily integrates with surroundings, and is available in solar and electric variations. The electric models even feature LED lights and built-in Bluetooth speakers, so owners can bring the party to their pool. DEL Tixit end-stands are available in

matt grey, white or black, with a textured power-coated aluminium finish, and are 100% recyclable. The cover can be remotely operated by the wireless Wi-key control box, which is password protected to stop unauthorised access. Covers can be retrofitted to pools of 2.5m x 3m up to 5m x 13.5m. “Most importantly, a DEL pool cover will make the pool area safer, as it can be opened or closed in minutes and for extra security customers can add locking kits,” explained Adam Clark, Sales Director at Golden Coast. “But that doesn’t mean safe can’t also be stylish. Innovative DEL covers like the Tixit can be customised to suit individual tastes to ensure that they fit with the overall look of the pool area.” All DEL pool covers are highly resistant to impact, scratches, heat and UV light and meet standard NF P 90-308.

any pool, above-ground or in-pool, available. Pit exit rollers reduce damage to the top of the slats whilst they exit cave pits. Stainless steel frames are designed for easy access, and accessory design and manufacture are second to none. With its own design tubular motor system installed within the roller shaft, specifically designed and built in house, it features slats that push the profile to a new level of excellence. Rollo Solar slats are truly some of the best on the market and their design features prove this. The thing that stands out is that the slat profile is curved, offering better roll dimensions and more secure storage on the roller shaft. This in turn allows for longer end sections to be achieved on the roll. The slat has also been modified along the back edge, a curved rib has been added into the slat’s design giving a fourth air chamber. Not only does this increase the buoyancy of the slat but helps reduce the dirt and debris build up. By sealing off this edge, the top of the slat remains clean, algae is no longer able to grow plus state-of-the-art welding the end caps ensures a crystal clear finish all round. As well as a myriad of colours to complement the white, blue, grey and coloured solar slats, a RAL colour service is offered for those customers looking for that special effect, plus there’s even an on-trend and stylish Copper Solar slat option – simply a stunning colour to complement a pool and house!

DRIPOOL – PROVIDING 30 YEARS OF POOL SAFETY Dripool have been at the forefront of pool safety for over 30 years and remain the UK’s only designers and manufacturers of automatic safety covers, for all shapes and types of swimming pool. Dripool are in the enviable position of providing a complete turnkey solution to meet and exceed all requirements including site visits, customer liaison when required, Architect interaction and full technical support. The company’s over-coping Dripool ‘H’ and

CV systems use powerful hydraulic drives and incorporate blowers (if required) allowing Dripool to cover both new and existing freeform and level deck pools up to 30 metres long by 10 metres wide. One of the market leaders is their flagship Driglide under coping system and it offers several unique features. Patented beam assisted cantilevers enable the cover housing to be paved and coped identically to the rest of the pool area, giving the most aesthetically pleasing finish available, whilst allowing even the heaviest of bather to jump or dive from on top of the housing. This also ensures the cover can be housed at either end of the pool with minimal design requirements. After a busy 2020 and following an incredible start to this year too, the company have extended their Autosafe safety cover promotion that allows all the components to create a rigid housing finish (galvanised brackets, plates and access hatches) ready for paving, completely free of charge. Dripool have also managed to secure a much wider range of colours which provides owners with the ability to blend their safety cover more easily with the pool surround than ever before.

OCEA OFFER TWO DECADES OF EXCELLENCE, ELEGANCE AND ENGINEERING By exclusively continuing to manufacture their own cover materials, Ocea are able to ensure that quality and elegance remain their objectives. In addition to providing a range of great value PVC slats, Ocea offer the largest range of polycarbonate, transparent and solar profile options on the market. Thanks to the versatility of being able to produce both dual and tri-extrusion technology, Ocea slat profiles add a conductive bottom layer to your specially-selected transparent surface layer. This transforms the cover into a vital secondary heating source. What’s more, Ocea offers the widest choice of polycarbonate, transparent and colour finishes.

By exclusively continuing to manufacture their own cover materials, Ocea are able to ensure that quality and elegance remain their objectives

Ocea’s exclusive sleek and interlocking slat profile gives an unrivalled veneer finish to any pool. Alongside the supreme design, the 65mm profile is optimally engineered with versatility as a key factor; to both seal the pool surface and maximise the solar potential. Sixty five millimetres was chosen as the profile width as it is the perfect balance between maximising surface contact for heat retention and the ability to tailor the cover to bespoke shapes and sizes without detracting from the beauty of the pool finish. When it comes to drive systems, whether for an existing or a new swimming pool, Ocea offers two kinds of systems for pool covers: the Logic system and the Classic system. Boasting a 25 year industry pedigree, the Classic motor system is the traditional method for motorising an automatic pool cover whereas the advantage of the Ocea Logic motor system is that it is fitted inside the cover roller itself, thus minimalising the installation space with no moving parts outside of the pool.

OPINION

A Toe In The Water “Our industry got out of the blocks early this year and we all know what it will take to make 2021 a fantastic season so, is it going to happen?” asks Jamie Adams, Managing Director at wet leisure distributor Golden Coast

L

ast year was an exceptional one for the wet leisure industry and there is every sign that people who dipped their toe in the water of a new spa, hot tub or possibly an above-ground pool in 2020 enjoyed the experience enough to want to improve on it this coming summer. In fact, judging by the extraordinary volume of inlets, skimmers and main drains we are selling at Golden Coast, there’s a lot of swimming pools being built out there and if our hot tub accessories order books are anything to go by, there are plenty of people looking forward to soaking in the sun again. Those are certainly good signs that this coming season is shaping up well but what do we specifically need? Can we assume that after two years without a holiday abroad the British public have cottoned on to the fact that holidaying at home and having a pool to enjoy all summer long is an attractive alternative to jetting off for two weeks?

WHO REALLY KNOWS? If you want to know what this coming season is going to be like for our industry then you should ask Boris Johnson, Chris Witty, the European Union and the Met Office. It used to seem as if our industry went quietly and happily about its business and if you were to ask what influenced it, what made a year good or bad, then people would talk in general terms about the weather, the economy and, of course, competition from the internet. The forces that are shaping up to influence this coming season are rather more specific than that.

BORIS AND CHRIS The social and economic effects of our responses to the COVID-19 pandemic made more difference to our industry’s fortunes in 2020 than anything else and they will almost certainly do so again. Lockdowns and furloughs, travel restrictions and work-from-home practices left families across the country with unspent money in their pockets and nowhere to go to spend it. People found themselves with more disposable income and money that had been earmarked for that holiday abroad which

didn’t even get changed into Euros. This year we find ourselves on a roadmap to end lockdown, but we aren’t expecting to get to the end of that road, particularly where overseas travel is concerned, for some time to come. The earliest date for holidaying abroad has been given as 17 May but that is far from certain and of course depends on the situation in the country that holidaymakers would look to travel to. I think Mr Johnson and Mr Whitty will make sure most people will be spending their summer at home.

THE WEATHERMAN Come what may, our industry remains stubbornly solar powered. If it hadn’t been for the glorious weather, those people stuck in last summer’s enforced staycation might have spent their money elsewhere. Happily the weather was good and, importantly for the season to come, 2021 is set to be a scorcher. The Met Office has already forecast that it will be one of the hottest years on record meaning our solar powered industry can run at full throttle.

BRUSSELS Not the EU as such, but Brexit; the gift that keeps on giving. Leaving the EU has played havoc with the speed and reliability of imports from Europe and, in many instances, it has significantly added to the cost. The UK wet leisure

Lockdowns and furloughs, travel restrictions and work-from-home practices left families across the country with unspent money in their pockets and nowhere to go to spend it” 72 April 2021 SPN 76_SPN_April_2021_Opinion.indd 72

industry imports a lot from the continent. According to the latest Wet Leisure Survey, last season the demand for hot tubs and spas so outstripped supply that people were happy to buy anything, even if it didn’t match what they were looking for. This year the supply chain is perhaps even more fragile and many businesses are starting the season with low stock levels. It would be a crying shame if the demand was there but our industry simply didn’t have the goods to service it. It’s in everyone’s interest to sort out problems with customs and border disruption, so we can only hope that the situation will improve.

A SHOT IN THE ARM The pandemic is dreadful, no one can deny that, but with any luck the programme of vaccinations will start to bring us back to… well, it won’t be normal. Will it? The world has changed, habits have changed and behaviours have changed. Some of those changes will stay with us. The number of people wanting to work from home, contactless – and cashless – payment, internet shopping; the differences that COVID-19 has wrought here are the cornerstones of tomorrow’s world. People have tried these things and found they liked them. They have dipped a toe in the water and the water is warm and sparkling. Attitudes to holidays have changed as well and when that is combined with increased concern for climate change, we may well be seeing the staycation as the new normal and that should profit our industry for many years to come.
