Architecture and Urban Planning is an annual edition of scientific proceedings in Latvian architecture where both experienced lecturers and new scientists – PhD students of the Faculty of Architecture and Urban Planning of Riga Technical University – publish their research materials. For the second year, the compilation is international in scope as it also publishes articles written by foreign colleagues. These are published only in English, while the articles of local authors are available in English and Latvian. The authors present the content of their articles at the annual scientific and technical conference held annually at RTU, in October, thus celebrating the foundation anniversary of the university. For several years now the colleagues from Finland, Estonia, Lithuania and other countries have been taking part in these conferences. Like in 2009, the illustrations included in the compilation are only black-and-white, since the scanty budget allocated to the university prevents it from printing a coloured edition as it was back in 2007 and 2008. The editorial board, however, expresses the hope that, figuratively speaking, the compilation has not lost its colour, since the scope of analysed themes, when compared to the relatively large number of PhD students at the faculty, is extremely vast. This, obviously, is directly linked with the economic situation, as interest in science has significantly increased over the past two years. If once it was quite difficult to find people willing to study in PhD programmes, the tables have turned and for the second year in a row seven to eight candidates apply for three available PhD vacancies. The young scientists are constantly expanding their range of interests. The articles focus on the issues of contemporary architectural theory and history, preservation of architectural heritage, architectural styles, history of urban planning, spatial planning, landscape architecture, perception of urban environment and cultural landscape, specific features of creative process, as well as environmental quality and its semantic importance. The themes of studies performed abroad fall in the same categories. These articles will be a useful supplementary aid in professional creative work of specialists in architecture and urban planning, as well as for institutions responsible for preservation and protection of cultural heritage. Architecture is an art, which, unlike any other form of visual art, affects human subconsciousness regardless of individual preferences or prior intent. Therefore, this compilation would be of great benefit to those who are interested in Latvia’s environment and its cultural values.
”Arhitektūra un pilsētplānošana” ir Latvijas arhitektūras zinātnes gadagrāmata. Tajā savus pētījumus publicē gan RTU Arhitektūras un pilsētplānošanas fakultātes pieredzējušie mācībspēki, gan jaunie zinātnieki – doktorantūras studenti. Jau otro gadu krājumam ir starptautisks aptvērums: tajā publicēti arī ārzemju kolēģu raksti. Tie ir tikai angļu valodā. Pašmāju veikums prezentēts gan angliski, gan latviski. Par savu rakstu saturu to autori nolasa ziņojumus ikgadējā RTU zinātniski tehniskajā konferencē, kas katru gadu notiek oktobrī, atzīmējot augstskolas dibināšanas gadskārtu. Tajā nu jau vairākus gadus piedalās arī kolēģi no Somijas, Igaunijas, Lietuvas un citām zemēm. Tāpat kā 2009. gadā, krājumā iekļauto rakstu ilustrācijas ir tikai melnbaltas, jo augstskolas pašreizējais trūcīgais finansējums joprojām nedod iespēju iespiest pilnkrāsainu izdevumu, kā tas izdevās 2007. un 2008. gadā. Redkolēģija tomēr izsaka cerību, ka pārnestā nozīmē krājuma krāsainība nav zudusi, jo tajā analizēto tēmu spektrs, atbilstoši relatīvi lielajam doktorantu skaitam fakultātē, ir neparasti plašs. Arī tās acīmredzot ir tiešas sekas ekonomiskajai situācijai: pēdējos divos gados ievērojami pieaugusi interese par zinātni. Ja kādreiz bija zināmas grūtības atrast studēt gribētājus doktorantūras studiju programmā, tad tagad jau otro gadu pēc kārtas uz trīs studiju vietām doktorantūrā ir septiņi līdz astoņi pretendenti. Jauno zinātnieku interešu loks aizvien paplašinās. Raksti veltīti mūsdienu arhitektūras teorijas un vēstures, arhitektūras mantojuma saglabāšanas, arhitektūras stilistikas, pilsētbūvniecības vēstures, teritoriju plānošanas, ainavu arhitektūras, pilsētvides un kultūrainavas uztveres, radošo procesu specifikas, kā arī vides kvalitātes un tās semantiskās nozīmes jautājumiem. Tematiski ar tiem cieši saskanīgi ir ārzemēs veiktie pētījumi. Krājumā iekļautie raksti būs noderīgs palīglīdzeklis profesionālajā radošajā darbā gan arhitektūras un pilsētplānošanas speciālistiem, gan par kultūras mantojuma saglabāšanu un aizsardzību atbildīgajām institūcijām. Arhitektūra ir māksla, kas, atšķirībā no jebkura cita vizuālo mākslu veida, objektīvi iedarbojas uz cilvēka zemapziņu neatkarīgi no katra indivīda vēlmēm vai iepriekšēja nolūka. Tāpēc krājums noderēs arī jebkuram, kam nav vienaldzīga Latvijas vide un tajā esošās kultūras vērtības.
