St. Vincent de Paul Society In today’s Gospel Jesus called the Twelve, and said to them, “If anyone wishes to be first, he shall be the last of all and the servant of all.” Taking a child, he placed it in their midst, and putting his arms around it, he said to them, “Whoever receives one child such as this in my name, receives me; and whoever receives me, receives not me but the One who sent me.” Your gift to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul will help hungry children feel the arms of Jesus around them. As you place your gift in the Society of St Vincent de Paul Poor Box or deposit your envelope in the box by the stairs near the main doors of the church, please say a prayer for the poor who have no one to pray for them. Furniture donations welcome; please call 822-3132. If you wish to join the St. Vincent de Paul Society and be a communal part of your parish, call 676-0676. Thank you!

WE ARE FAMILY Back in the late 1970’s Sister Sledge had a popular song entitled We Are Family. The song emphasized the importance of being related, perhaps by blood, but certainly by a common bond. When one thinks of the word family, the first thing that generally comes to mind is being who we are linked through a blood line, and that’s very true, but it can often mean more than this. Marriage and family like are important to us as Catholics, but also vital to the wellbeing of society as a whole. Every person who has ever lived has come out of a family, including the Son of God, Jesus Christ! Our God is NO exception. Like all of us Jesus, had a mom and dad (Mary & Joseph) a cousin (John the Baptist) an aunt and uncle (Elizabeth and Zechariah) and grandparents (Ann and Joachim). Our God chose to enter into our world like every other person, through the love of a man and woman, who were disposed to God’s grace and plan for salvation history. Because of this defining moment in history, we as Church can say that family life is HOLY. A warm and loving family is God’s plan for all of us. From the very beginning when God created the first parents (Adam and Eve), God had a plan for family life. I am indeed, blessed by God to have grown up in a warm, loving and nurturing home with a mom, dad, and siblings who loved me and nurtured me, and I hope I did the same for them. By no means was my family rich, privileged or famous, but we had so many more intangible blessings, like love, support, discipline, encouragement, and of course faith. Call me naïve, but I thought every family was this way; in fact, I even thought everyone in Williston Park was Catholic and that everyone went to Church on Sundays and Holy Days! As I grew older, I realized that not everyone is Catholic, nor is everyone called by God to be Catholic, and that’s all right! I also came to the realization that some families are hurting, broken, and suffering because of perhaps addictions, infidelity, and others factor that can lead to the breakdown of family life.

In a few short days, Pope Francis will visit the United States and we are certainly blessed and graced to have his presence here in the New York Metropolitan area. Our Holy Father is visiting first and foremost to attend the World Meeting of Families being held in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia, affectionately known among Americans as the “city of brotherly love.”. I think you will agree this is an appropriate city in the U.S.A. to discuss the state of family life, certainly in our Church, but also in society. The Pope is acutely aware that family life has changed because of the pain of divorce and single parent families. This in turn has led to blended families, and other less traditional types of family models. Pope Francis is seeking ways to make those who might feel estranged or marginalized from the Church welcome in the Catholic Church. When we think of family, we immediately think of being related by blood lines, while that’s true, it means so much more! Families are people who can share common bonds of affection and interests and who support, love, encourage and challenge each other. As a priest, I am fortunate to have my own family, brother, sisters, mom, aunts, uncles, nieces and nephew and cousins, but I am also blessed to be part of other communities who are like family to me. St Boniface Martyr is one such community; by virtue of our Baptism we are all brothers and sister of Jesus Christ, and brothers and sisters to each other, and that makes us family. Another example is the gym where I work out in Mineola, the owner and other trainers refer to the members as “family.” Families need support and encouragement, and faith needs to play a vital role in the life of any family; it certainly does here at St. Boniface. Last Wednesday, we were blessed and fortunate to have Dr. Marilyn Martone speak about her own family life with its struggles and pain, but also joys. Despite the great deal of sorrow and difficulty her family has experienced, deep down her family has managed to find joy amidst this pain, because of their FAITH, and I dare say support, love and encouragement for one another. It was an informative and uplifting evening complete with delicious cakes, home-baked goodies and coffee/tea provided by Josie and other members of our PARISH FAMILY!

25th Sunday in Ordinary Time: September 20 “Will you let me be your servant? Let me be as Christ to you.” The Richard Gillard hymn with this line has become familiar to many Catholics. Sung at funerals, weddings, Holy Thursday foot washings, and Sunday Mass, the lyrics touch human hearts in their eloquent call to humbly serve the needs of others. Pope Francis, who serves the poor in his every word and deed, calls us to share in this journey. How can I surrender my need for recognition? How can I serve the needs of others? Monday, September 21 Feast of St. Matthew The names of the apostles are integral to our story of faith, but in truth, we know very little about many of them. Bits of information from the gospels and Acts of the Apostles do allow a glimpse of their lives in the first Christian community. The rest we can only prayerfully imagine. We know that Matthew collected from his Jewish kin the hated Roman tax and that he associated with other tax collectors and “sinners.” What we can prayerfully imagine is Jesus sharing a meal with them, and then we might wonder if we would have joined them at table. Tuesday, September 22 “Instead of being just a church that welcomes and receives by keeping the doors open, let us try also to be a church that finds new roads, that is able to step outside itself,” Pope Francis said in 2013. “Go to those who do not attend Mass, to those who have quit or are indifferent.” Discipleship requires reaching out beyond yourself or those you know; being church means encountering others where they are—welcoming, listening, and creating a family of worship that expands far beyond the walls of our comfort zone. Wednesday, September 23 Feast of St. Pius of Pietrelcina Padre Pio epitomizes the idea of a saint whose life was marked by heavenly signs. Of the more than 300 stigmatists—persons whose bodies carry marks resembling the wounds of the crucified Christ—in the history of the church, Pio was the only priest to be so honored. His reputed

miraculous signs included exuding a fragrance not compatible with five fresh wounds; bi-location; prophecy; the power of conversion; and the ability to read hearts. But to Pio himself, his dearest accomplishment was establishing a hospital for the relief of suffering. Looking like a saint may be appealing. Acting like a saint is better! Thursday, September 24 Carry your wealth in a bag full of holes and your fortunes will change. So the prophet Haggai observes. Today on the Muslim Feast of the Sacrifice, Muslims recall an ancient ritual full of holes: child sacrifice as a means of proving loyalty to God. Abraham brings his son Ishmael (not Isaac in the Quran version) to Mt. Moriah to demonstrate his fidelity. As in the familiar Bible story, the sacrifice is replaced and the son goes free. Heaven values the life of every child. Friday, September 25 Place is important to prayer. “Where does prayer come from?” the Catechism of the Catholic Church asks (2562). You can pray anywhere, but pay attention to where it is that you are able to be most fully present to God. After all, prayer doesn’t come to us, we come to prayer. In prayer, you offer your whole self. “Whether prayer is expressed in words or gestures, it is the whole (person) who prays,” the Catechism continues. Open your heart in and to prayer. God is waiting there; you just need to show up. Saturday, September 26 Feast of St. Cosmas and St. Damian We have only legend for these twin brothers from early church history: They were healers born in what is modern-day Syria who, despite their skill and popularity, never accepted payment for their ministry and died as martyrs. Even if we know few “facts” about them, the human need for healing keeps their story alive. Nearly a thousand years later, Francis of Assisi rebuilt a little church dedicated to Saint Damian that had fallen into ruin and there heard the icon of the crucified Christ instruct him also to rebuild the Church with a capital C. Healing, rebuilding, restoring. What wound can you salve today? What broken relationship can you rebuild?
