Invest just ive minutes a day, and your faith will deepen and grow— a day at a time. Sunday, September 14, 2014 Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross “Behold! Behold! The wood of the cross . . .” Each Good Friday, these words ring out in churches around the world. They can remind you of poignant, personal moments of veneration, and even as you read them now, connect you to the One who hung upon it: Jesus Christ, whose cross is adored and exalted today. Jesus gave his life in love and faith, so that in love and faith, you might share what you’ve been given with others. Today, behold and give thanks for all you’ve been given, letting your life echo into eternity. Monday, September 15 Memorial of Our Lady of Sorrows Modern society doesn’t grieve well. While we have days for national mourning, personal sorrow is all but dismissed. Families in mourning are expected to pull themselves together and return to their routines in short order. The liturgical placement of Our Lady of Sorrows the day after honoring the Holy Cross is a reminder that sorrow doesn’t go away once the proper rituals are observed. It may be good that our loved one is no longer suffering, but it doesn’t lessen our sadness. Make room for grief, both yours and that of others. Tuesday, September 16 Memorial of St. Cornelius and St. Cyprian If you can’t do something perfectly, don’t bother doing it at all—right? Wrong, Saint Cyprian says. He ought to know. He used that excuse during his dissipated youth. Because God’s demands were dif icult and he did not believe he could be saved, he was “disposed to acquiesce in my clinging vices,” he wrote. But he inally decided to try his best and was baptized at the age of 35. He always forgave weakness in others, and he and his friend Saint Cornelius fought heresy to welcome lapsed Christians back into the fold. Wednesday, September 17 Memorial of St. Robert Bellarmine Robert Bellarmine was ordained in 1570 and became a great writer and scholar of church doctrine and scripture. Under Pope Clement VIII, Bellarmine

prepared two in luential catechisms, and today he is venerated as a patron of catechists. Catechisms help teach doctrine, often using an easy‐to‐memorize question‐and‐answer format, particularly useful when instructing children. When using catechisms, remember these words from Vatican II: “The Holy Spirit works through people who receive the mission to proclaim the Gospel and whose competence and human experience form part of the pedagogy of the faith.” Thursday, September 18 The act of anointing with oils played a prominent role in biblical times, used in contexts as diverse as royalty, hospitality, and healing. The Catholic Church carries on this tradition, blessing three types of oils for anointing: the Oil of Catechumes, used to anoint adults preparing for the reception of Baptism; Oil of the In irm, used in Anointing of the Sick; and Sacred Chrism, used in Baptism, Con irmation, and Holy Orders. A living faith holds onto and reinterprets ancient customs like anointing. Carry them forward in your own anointed life today. Friday, September 19 Memorial of St. Januarius Very little is known about Saint Januarius, other than the year of his martyrdom in 305. What is believed to be his blood in the Naples Cathedral in Italy lique ies several times a year. The church typically displays a sober skepticism about such events while also af irming wholeheartedly the reality of miracles through the power of God. The great miracle is the love of God for humanity and the resurrection of Christ. Pay attention to love in your life today, and give powerful evidence of it to others. Saturday, September 20 Memorial of St. Andrew Kim Tae‐gon, St. Paul Chong Ha‐sang and companions While an underground and prohibited faith in Korea, Catholicism had taken root among laypeople 12 years before a priest arrived in 1836. Some 4,000 Catholics had learned the faith from pamphlets smuggled in from China. Catholics in Korea faced many hardships in those years, including the martyrdom of today’s saints, but they kept their faith alive until inally gaining religious freedom in 1883. When the desire is there, faith is possible under all kinds of circumstances. Stay strong in your faith as you deal with hardship in your own life. ©2014 by TrueQuest Communications.
