Parish Advent Mission, December 3 and 10 Our Parish Will be hosting an Advent Mission on two days in December, December 3rd and December 10 at 7:30pm. The Mission will be led by Dr. Joann Heaney-Hunter of St. John’s University. Each day will have its own theme:

December 3: “Mary: A role model for all Christians who wait in hope” This presentation will focus on Mary’s unconditional “yes” to God, and her willingness to wait for God’s will to be realized in her. How do we say yes to God, and how do we grow as hopeful disciples this Advent season? December 10: Dr. Joann Heaney-Hunter serves as an Associate Professor of Theology at St. John’s University. She holds a Ph.D. in Theology from Fordham University and an M.S. in Mental Health Counseling from Long Island University. She is licensed to practice Mental Health Counseling in the State of New York, and is Board certified as a professional counselor. Dr. Heaney-Hunter is a nationally and internationally recognized speaker on marriage and family ministry in the Catholic Church and is an award winning teacher. Most recently, she has served as a lecturer at the Pontifical North American College in Vatican City, and as a retreat director at the Loyola Jesuit Retreat House in Morristown, New Jersey. She has coauthored two books on marriage preparation; a Leader’s Guide and Couple Guide entitled Unitas: Preparing for Sacramental Marriage (Crossroad Publishing Co.), and has published numerous scholarly and pastoral articles in various journals and edited volumes. Last June, she presented a paper entitled “Positive Psychology and Ministry to Families” at the Society for Pastoral Theology in Atlanta, Georgia.

“Becoming Families of Faith – What the Synod can teach us about our families and our parish family this Advent” The Synod on the Family provided us with some central perspectives on the meaning of family. These insights certainly apply to our individual families. I also ask the question: How can the Synod help us reflect on our parish family? What does it mean to say a parish is “a family of faith?” How can we grow as a family this Advent season?

Dear Parishioners, “Be watchful! Be alert! You do not know when the time will come.” Mk 13: 33 As we begin the Advent Season, the Gospel the Gospel challenges us to be watchful and alert for the coming of the Lord. The Season of Advent is like a stop sign on our journey of life. As we stop, we are called to re lect on what in our life, from the past year, has begun to clutter our lives and our hearts. Are there areas and issues in our lives that keep us from preparing a place for Jesus? The Advent Wreath is the main symbol of the season. You will notice that the wreath has four (4) candles, representing the four weeks of Advent. Each week we will light a candle to remind us that the time of salvation draws near. Three of the candles are purple (the irst, second and fourth week), purple is the color of waiting, conversion and hope. The third week we light a pink or rose‐colored candle. It is in the third week that we irst hear in the Scriptures of the coming of the Messiah. The color of joy is white and when that is mixed with purple is creates pink. But even in that joy of hearing of the Messiah, we are reminded to continue to focus on our preparations and hence the fourth week is again a purple candle. Many families now have an Advent Wreath displayed in their homes and before dinner say prayers of blessing and light the candle. If you go online you can ind prayers for each weeks blessings. How wonderful a custom to be able to bring the symbols of the season into our homes! May Jesus, Our Messiah and Mary, Mother of the New Advent, bless you all. Fr. Bob

Invest just ive minutes a day, and your faith will deepen and grow—a day at a time.  Sunday, November 30, 2014 There is more than one way to track time. In fact, some 50 different calendars are in use around the world today. Though most of the world uses the Gregorian calendar to manage everyday affairs and secular matters, Christians mark sacred time using the Advent calendar. Today happens to be the irst day in that calendar, the beginning of the liturgical year as well as the start of the season of Advent. How would you like to grow and deepen in your faith this coming year? Write down some “faith resolutions,” seal them in an envelope, and hold them in a special place for later review.  Monday, December 1 Whether it is Ebola or HIV, on World AIDS Day we remember those whose entire lives have been brutalized by disease and we recognize how interdependent we are, that ultimately we are our brothers’ and sisters’ keepers. Jesus once expressed amazement at the faith of one who—not even a follower of Jesus—nonetheless trusted in God’s goodness on behalf of his servant. Jesus was amazed because that “outsider’s” faith was great and encompassed even a social subordinate, a servant. We must “keep” our brothers and sisters who often feel excluded, isolated, or shunned just because they are sick.  Tuesday, December 2 Genealogy is more popular than ever. There are websites that help trace family lineages and TV shows that explore the family histories of celebrities. Genealogy can be a fun and meaningful hobby that fosters a proud connection to ethnic heritage and honors past generations. Remember that you have a spiritual family tree as well, with its roots in biblical history. The Gospels of Matthew and Luke detail the lineage of Jesus—from his father Joseph back to King David, back to Abraham, and inally back to Adam. This is your heritage, too.  Wednesday, December 3 Feast of St. Francis Xavier Behind every Ignatius is a Francis Xavier When we think of the founder of the Jesuits, Ignatius of Loyola comes to mind. But he didn’t do it alone. Francis Xavier and others studied with him, prayed with him, and stood together with him at the forming of the Society of Jesus—with emphasis on

the word society. You can do great things on your own, no doubt, but you can do even greater things working together with others who share your faith and can strengthen your vision and your commitment. That’s the beauty of having a church community—you don’t have to go it alone. We’re all in this together.  Thursday, December 4 Where can you turn for strength when things seem to fall apart despite your best efforts? That happens to most of us at some time in life. What once seemed secure—a job, a relationship, faith—now looks tenuous. It’s not easy to weather these storms or to ind God in the midst of them. Anxiety and fear can loom large. It can help to remember the good in life—however small or distant it may feel. The act of focusing on good is a way to regain balance, to tap into the strength, grace, and love that God offers always.  Friday, December 5 The way you see things has a big in luence on how you live. If you think the world will never change, you probably won’t ever notice when it does. Part of the invitation during Advent is to gain new perspective. As you wait for Christ’s coming, maybe the invitation is to see with enlightened eyes. Isaiah speaks of a time when the blind will see, the deaf will hear, and the lowly will rejoice. What if that time is now? Transformation is already taking place. You simply need to be open enough to seeing, hearing, and being like never before. Today’s readings: Isaiah 29:17‐24; Matthew 9:27‐31  Saturday, December 6 Feast of St. Nicholas Recognition fuels most gift‐giving. That’s why buildings are named after big benefactors. The practice of secret gift giving, so much associated with fourth‐century Saint Nicholas—the archetypal Santa Claus—is beautiful because it is generosity at its purest. There is no payback or payoff possible, even the warm feeling that comes from hearing “Thank you so much!” which we all appreciate when acting generously. Giving anonymously is both more challenging and more enriching than the usual gifting rituals because it puts our generosity to the true test. Can we give without any hope of return or any expectation of recognition?
