Corpus Christi Procession On Sunday, May 29 the Feast of Corpus Christi, we will process around the block with the Holy Eucharist and return into Church for Adoration and Benediction after the10:15 mass. All First Communicants are invited to wear their First Communion attire and process with the congregation and the Holy Eucharist. All Altar servers are all also invited to vest and process. UNDER MY UMBRELLA According to the online encyclopedia, Wikipedia, she was born Robyn Rihanna Fenty and she is known in most circles, especially music, simply as Rihanna. She is a Barbadian singer and song writer known for a number of hit songs like We Found Love, Diamonds, and Umbrella. I am sure that many of you have heard her songs at either parties, social gatherings, or just over the radio. Some of the lyrics to her song Umbrella include, “You can stand under my umbrella- ella- ella-ehh- ehh-ehh….” In an interview, Rihanna was asked if this song had any particular meaning or was about proving protection to which she replied, “an umbrella is for protection; it protects us from the rain.” She then stated that in her case it was a metaphor for negativity and vulnerability. One could conclude that the song offers comfort and consolation to someone who might be going through rough times and how she will be a source of refuge and support in both good times and bad times. I would like to add my own personal interpretation of the song that the umbrella could also be a source of inclusivity. As Catholics, we pray in the Creed that we belong to ONE, HOLY, CATHOLIC AND APOSTOLIC CHURCH. The word Catholic means universal. In other words, it is worldwide and as such includes every race, language and culture around the globe. It also means that all Her members believe, embrace and hold as true all Her teachings; however, the Church would also teach that in unity, there is diversity. Some examples of this would include differing styles in liturgy and worship. For example, the Church in Nigeria (Fr. Azubuike’s homeland) uses liturgical dance in liturgies. Men and women in ornate and elaborate dress dance up the aisle during the Presentation of the Gifts, something we here in the United States (especially those of Western European ancestry) do not do during Mass. Another example would be the language and worship style of the various Rites that compose the Catholic Church. We here at St. Boniface Martyr are part of the ROMAN RITE which is the largest Rite of the Catholic Church; however there are other Rites (Byzantine, Syro-Malankara, etc that also belong to the Catholic Church. Their rituals (ways of celebrating mass) are quite different, but very beautiful. To all of us who belong to the Roman Rite, these other customs and traditions would appear “very foreign” but the Church encourages differing cultures and nationalities to incorporate their traditions into the Sacred Liturgy. Holy Mother Church seeks to embrace, love and support all people UNDER HER UMBRELLA! I am often puzzled and sometimes dismayed by what appear to be many faithful and good Catholics who for one reason or another tend to pass judgment on other Catholics who may embrace other more traditional forms of worship particularly pious devotions and prayers or more forward thinking ways of worship. Several parishes in our Diocese have a Rock Mass on Sunday evening. The music is ALWAYS CHRISTO-CENTRIC and LITURGICALLY PERMISSIBLE; however, the instruments are not quite so traditional, i.e. organ/piano. Rather Rock instruments are used such as drums, base and electric guitars and perhaps a keyboard. When I was assigned to St. Aidan we had a Rock Mass to draw in young and not so young who were looking for a more contemporary style of worship, while still reverencing all the rubrics and liturgical laws governing worship. One individual wrote the Pastor and me a letter complaining how I could celebrate such a mass because he deemed it irreverent. Worse yet he asked the Pastor how he could allow such a thing in Church! The Church through the ages has encouraged differing styles of worship and prayer provided it IS NOT CONTRARY TO THE FAITH. In case you’re wondering how I responded to this person’s objection, I simply told him “THE UMBRELLA OF THE CATHOLIC CHURCH IS BIG ENOUGH FOR ALL TO FIT UNDER!”

Students visit Chocolate Works
Students in the Top Achievers Program, T.A.P. in grades two through eight visited Chocolate Works in Bellmore, as part of the Fifth Grade T.A.P. project to study the affects sugar has on the brain. Students were divided into two groups. The first group covered cookies, graham crackers and pretzels with chocolate and followed the process as the food went through the conveyor belt. The second group tasted different types of cocoa powder. Students learned that 400 cocoa pods makes one pound of chocolate. The students also discovered that there is really only two types of chocolate, dark and milk. White chocolate is made with all fat. The trip was both fun and educational.

Sunday, May 29: Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ (Corpus Christi); The feast of Corpus Christi is popular and moving because it is simple and direct—it’s all about the Eucharist, one of the greatest treasures of Catholicism. Yet the feast would not exist were it not for the efforts of Juliana of Liege, a Norbertine canoness born in 1191 in Liege, Belgium, a city where there were groups of women dedicated to eucharistic worship. She had a vision of a full moon with one dark spot signifying the lack of a feast day solely dedicated to the Eucharist. She shared her vision and eventually vision became reality. What gift can you envision giving to your community? Monday, May 30 On this Memorial Day, as you remember those who gave their lives serving their country, also keep in your heart those who have lost loved ones, those struggling with physical and emotional wounds, and all other victims of war. The encounter between Mary and Elizabeth was more than the welcome arrival of help for an aged mother’s third trimester. Wednesday, June 1 Feast of St. Justin, martyr Christian theology owes a debt to the pre-Christian philosophies of Plato and Aristotle. Early church theologian Justin was able to see connections between the great philosophers of Greek antiquity and the wisdom revealed by Jesus. The prologue of John’s Gospel speaks of Jesus as “Logos,” the preexisting Word. Justin believed that the “seeds of
Christianity” found in thinkers such as Plato or Aristotle were evidence of the Logos acting in history before Christ’s incarnation. Whether or not Plato and Aristotle were “unknowing Christians,” we are knowing Christians. Spend some time with the Word today. Thursday, June 2 Feast of St. Marcellinus St. Peter, martyrs We don’t know a lot about Marcellinus and Peter, martyred in 304, but we know Peter was an exorcist, an often misunderstood or overdramatized office of church ministry. The rite itself was revised in 1999 for the first time since 1614, and modern practice counsels priests empowered to perform an exorcism to first make sure they are dealing with genuine possession rather than mental illness. The Code of Canon Law states that the bishop is to give permission to perform the rite to a priest “who has piety, knowledge, prudence, and integrity of life.” We rely on Jesus to protect us from the power of evil, and the church stands by our side should we need assistance in doing so. Friday, June 3 Solemnity of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus To do something “without heart” means to live without passion or purpose. “In the Heart of Christ,” Saint John Paul II wrote, a person’s heart “learns to know the genuine and unique meaning” of life and destiny: “to unite the filial love for God and the love of neighbor.” The Sacred Heart reminds us that Jesus had a heart just like ours; that his acts of love aren’t beyond us, but are already in us, in every loving gesture, relationship, and experience. This is the heart of what gives us life—a heart whose love never stops beating in us. Saturday, June 4 Memorial of the Immaculate Heart of the Blessed Virgin Mary “In a unique way the face of the Son belongs to Mary,” Saint John Paul II wrote in Rosarium Virginis Mariae (“The Rosary of the Virgin Mary”). Jesus was the child she gazed upon in the manger, the one she pondered in her heart throughout her life. Her heart was filled with a love for him that embraced the pain of the Passion and the joy of the Resurrection.
