The St. Boniface Men’s Club Great news….the first meeting! “IT’S A GUY THING” Well gents, it looks like we are going forward with this new men’s ministry at St. Boniface. Our first meeting is Saturday, May 31 at 8 am in the Parish Center. Figure on about an hour or so to consume the bagels and coffee and to chat about what direction you want this men’s group to go. Living out our identity as Catholic men is critical to the all the relationships in our lives; our families, our marriages and our children, and of course our most important relationship…with Jesus Christ. So once again fellas, if you think you may want to be a part of this, please e-mail me (Rich Lucidi) at qbalwily@optonline.net, or contact Father Bob at the parish office. (probably better to shoot me an e-mail so I can get you into the e-mail loop).

Dear Parishioners, If you love Me you will keep my commandments."J n14:15 " The call of discipleship is one that seeks the will of God. To discern that will, we have to be open to the presence of God in our lives. A willingness to invite God in our lives demands a response on our part. That response is to live in obedience to God's will. How often the very word "obedience" can cause us as Christians in the 21st Century to cringe. Obedience is not an attribute that many might see as worthy to embrace. Haven't we been taught that we create our own destinies...that our actions only effect our personal life? AND my favorite...well, I am a good person, so I can do it my way. Yet obedient is what we are called to be. Jesus says today in the Gospel that if we want to love Him we must keep His commandments. It is following the teaching of Jesus and following His example that we express that love. So what do we learn from Sacred Scripture? Of course there is much that shows us Jesus. But let us go back to recent memory. Six weeks ago we celebrated the glorious Resurrection of Jesus. A few days before that we commemorated the death and crucifixion of Jesus on Good Friday. The path that led Jesus to that Cross was one of total obedience to the will and desire of the Father. The readings that preceded the Crucifixion are ones of Jesus’ struggle to accept that will. Even Peter, when he hears Jesus talk about the suffering that awaits Him in Jerusalem, tries to talk Jesus out of going there. I am sure for one instant Jesus must have thought how easy it would have been for Him to stay away from Jerusalem. But He didn't, and He utters those powerful words to the Father in the Garden of Gethsemane...Not as I will, but as you will. The fir st step in accepting J esus as Lor d is a willingness to be obedient to His teachings. When we establish the importance of that obedience then we can move on to more specific teachings. Many that I am sure we are all familiar with...love, forgiveness, generosity, compassion and of course the list continues and changes as we deepen our faith life. BUT it all has to begin with a desire (and yes sometimes a struggle), to be obedient to the will of the Father and the teachings of Jesus. The more we come to know Jesus in prayer and Scripture the more, I think, obedience becomes less of an issue. So in spite of possible misgivings and apprehension over the word obedience, there is a peace that comes from giving our lives to Jesus. We become open to the path that He wants us to walk. When we are walking in obedience to the plan and purpose that God has for us we become free to be what He created us to be. IN that freedom to be more like Jesus lies a true path to happiness. But it starts with those words...not as I will, but as You will. Don't be afr aid of giving your self to J esus...and don't, out of fear , water down His wor ds. His words are life! I just returned from Tappen Beach as we ended our St. Boniface Feast by the Shore. It was a resounding success!. I was so edified but the countless people who stopped me to say how much fun they were having. It was such a wonderful experience of Parish and community coming together and having fun. One little girl came running up to me and said "Fr. Bob, this is the best Feast I ever went to!" I am sure that was the sentiment of so many. We haven't gotten in the "numbers" yet...but I can tell you that no matter how much the Feast generated financially for our Parish, it can never compare to the bonds it strengthened among us. I want to thank all those who worked to make it such a wonderful success. I am so appreciative of our wonderful Events Committee who have been planning this Feast for months. Their wor k, dedication and enthusiasm did much to generate the success of the Feast. I would like to express my sincere thanks to the committee. I would also like to express my appreciation to our Town Supervisor, John Venditto, and the entire Town of Oyster Bay Board for gr anting us per mission to use Tappen Beach. A special thank you to the Fire Departments and EMS of Sea Cliff and Glenwood Landing for doing stand-by at the Feast. Thank you to our bravest! In this month of May dedicated to Our Lady I encourage you to pray the Rosary. Let Mary be the vehicle to lead you to Jesus. In Jesus our Risen Lord and Mary our Mother, Fr. Bob

Spotlight on Stewardship Highlights Robert Lynch By Carol Griffin

Robert Lynch is one of St. Boniface Martyr's most active parishioners. A major contribution he makes is to maintain our presence on the internet. He is the webmaster of our website www.saintboniface.org which he created fifteen years ago, and he is the administrator of our Facebook pages and Twitter feed, where parishioners may post photos and information about parish happenings. Our website includes extensive information about our parish ministries and events and a growing section on our history. He also posts the weekly bulletin each week on the website and emails it to over five hundred subscribers. Robert was born in 1955 and grew up along with six siblings in Bayside, Queens attending St. Robert Bellarmine Catholic School, Bishop Reilly High School, and later St. John's University and Law School. "I was always surrounded by the Catholic faith, it was always part of my everyday life," he said. Robert said although Vatican II had a big influence on him, he was blessed to have some pre-Vatican II experience. From his Catholic family life and education he was he always surrounded by a Catholic ethos. In 4th grade he became an altar boy when they still had to learn Latin. "I had a taste of the pre-Vatican II church and developed an enduring appreciation of the changes." Robert's upbringing caused him to develop a deep interest in Catholic social teaching and become a strong supporter of Catholic education. His grandfather, father and brothers have been strong supporters of the labor movement. Besides his family, he has been influenced over the years by many interesting Catholics he has had the good fortune to meet. He corresponded with Fr. Andrew Greely, met Archbishop Fulton Sheen, protested with Fr. Daniel Berrigan and Bernadette Devlin, and was a local activist for the causes of Cesar Chavez. Robert has, since childhood , been an avid student of Irish culture and history. He is a traditional Irish musician, has made many trips to Ireland and speaks the Irish language. He is proud that his grandfather was an Irish revolutionary. Robert, who plays the bagpipes, has been the chairman of the St. Patrick's Parade in Glen Cove for a number of years and in 2010 he was honored as the parade's Grand Marshall. He teaches traditional music to children and adults and also lectures on Irish culture and history at Molloy College Institute of Irish Studies. Robert’s warm outgoing personality and talents, and generous nature lend itself well to many interesting things. He has had a private law practice for the past 30 years and specializes in elderlaw planning, estate planning and real estate. At the same time, has created and directs a unique after school program incorporating all the aftercare services, clubs, activities and sports at our Parish school, All Saints Regional Catholic. He is also Director of Promotions at ASR, where he is presently designing a two year celebration and appeal marking the start of the Second Century of Catholic Education on the Gold Coast, which started in 1915 at the building now occupied by our school. Robert teaches 7th grade religious education at St. Boniface, serves on the Events Committee, previously served on the Finance Committee and helps parents prepare for the Baptism of their children. He has also served as the DJ at many of St. Boniface events. Robert is married to Sighle Webster Lynch, who is equally involved in the life of the parish and school. Their four children, Kieran, Aidan, Conor and Maura are at various states of their education at ASR and at Catholic high schools and colleges.

TAKE FIVE FOR FAITH Invest just five minutes a day, and your faith will deepen and grow—a day at a time. SUNDAY, MAY 25, 2014: SIXTH SUNDAY OF EASTER The seven essential ingredients for a happy and holy life are available to you at all times. Simply call on the Holy Spirit—your divine Advocate—and in one breath you will receive: wisdom, understanding, counsel, knowledge, fortitude, piety, and wonder and awe. Whenever you find yourself emotionally overwrought or on an uncertain course, remember not to act out of anger or fear. Look to God for help, and the peace of God’s Spirit will come. MONDAY, MAY 26: MEMORIAL OF ST. PHILIP NERI, PRIEST Even in corrupt 16th-century Rome, Saint Philip retained a joyful spirit—a sure sign of the presence of the Holy Spirit. “A joyful heart is more easily made perfect than a downcast one,” he said. Do you ever catch yourself slipping into the character of a grouch? Careful research has shown that, counter to popular belief, it actually takes more muscles to smile than to frown, but isn’t it worth the effort to build up those smile muscles? Make Philip’s prayer your own: “Let me get through today, and I shall not fear tomorrow.” TUESDAY, MAY 27: MEMORIAL OF ST. AUGUSTINE OF CANTERBURY, BISHOP Saint Augustine of Canterbury is called the “Apostle of England” for bringing Christianity to the Anglo-Saxons. It wasn’t easy—they were a rough crowd, and they clung fiercely to their customs. Augustine experienced frustration, failure, and self-doubt, but he kept trying and at least partially succeeded in establishing the English church. Pope Gregory the Great wrote to him reassuringly: “He who would climb to a lofty height must go by steps, not leaps.” Even when it seems as if you’re not making headway, sometimes the only thing you can do is keep pushing forward. WEDNESDAY, MAY 28 Faith requires you to open your eyes to the light. It demands conscious decisions day by day. Christianity has no setit-and-forget-it mode. If you’re not exercising a vital, growing faith, your spirit is probably withering on the vine. Which is why un-churched seekers who eagerly grope for answers to life’s mysteries are sometimes more spiritually healthy than regular churchgoers who park in the pews and vegetate. Saint Paul was impressed by Athenians who worshipped the “unknown god.” Do you sometimes fall into the trap of thinking you know God too well to seek further? THURSDAY, MAY 29: SOLEMNITY OF THE ASCENSION OF THE LORD When Christ was raised from the dead, it wasn’t merely a matter of his soul going to heaven. He first appeared physically to his disciples. Then when he did ascend, he took his body with him. His return to the right hand of the Father made sense because Jesus was, after all, God. His body going with him, however, was just as necessary because God did not take on human form only to shed it as if it were a burden. That is the great calling the celebration of the Ascension reminds you of: to share in God’s life and rise to God. FRIDAY, MAY 30 On this date in 1868, only a few years after the U.S. Civil War ended, “Decoration Day,” which later became Memorial Day, was celebrated for the first time. The idea was to unite and heal a wounded nation while honoring those who had fallen on all sides. The date was selected in part because it was not the anniversary of any particular battle, in part because it was seen as the optimal date for flowers to be in bloom. Give a flower and heal a division in your own life today. SATURDAY, MAY 31: FEAST OF THE VISITATION OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY God often speaks through relationships with other people. A conversation with a friend can reveal a deeper truth. A simple smile from a stranger can tell of the wonderful love of God. Memories can call forth gratitude or alert you to the need for greater reflection. Truly it is in encountering others that the spirit of God stirs within. Just ask Mary as she encountered Elizabeth at the Visitation. Pay attention to the people in your life who make your soul jump. Cherish these moments and remember: The life of Christ is contained in everyone you meet. ©2014 by TrueQuest Communications. All rights reserved.
