He studied in monasteries there before traveling to the Continent, where he converted people in present-day Germany and the Netherlands. In his role as a bishop and archbishop, he also worked on church reforms. A popular legend holds that he overcame pre-Christian superstitions by taking an ax to a sacred oak. The huge tree crashed, splitting into four parts. When Boniface was not struck dead, the people the people realized their earlier gods were powerless, nonexistent. He used planks from the tree to build a chapel. After returning to missionary work, Boniface was martyred in Frisia on June 5, 754 at the approximate age of 80.

Stewardship . . . a Way of Life

Thank you for your financial stewardship of $7368 last week. Next week there will be a second collection for our Maintenance and Repair Fund.

Special Assistance Donation

“Your surplus at the present time should supply their needs so that their surplus may in turn one day supply your need.” (II Cor 8:14). If you have surplus, please place it in an envelope marked “Special Assistance Donation” and Fr. Kevin will see it helps “supply their needs." Please pray about what Jesus is calling you to do.

BOB MORAN of Kings Park is the winner of the Feast by the Shore. St. Vincent de Paul Society Thank you from the St. Vincent de Paul Society to the students of our Religious Education program for the money collected in mite boxes during lent. The total was $664.72! Some notes were included as well: " I held the door open for a lot of people ." "I prayed every day." "I spent time with my family. " This was greatly appreciated! In the Gospel we see how Jesus was moved with pity and said to the widow, “Do not cry,” and the people knew that “God had visited his people.” When you hear the cries of the poor and reach out to help them, deep in their hearts the poor know that “God has visited them.” Please say a prayer for those who have no one to pray for them when you place your donation in the poor box. Furniture donations are also always welcome. Please call 822-3132 for details. Have you considered answering the call to help the poor by joining the Society of St. Vincent de Paul? Call the parish center at 676-0676 for more information about how you can become a more communal part of your parish.

The youth group meets on Sundays from 6pm-8pm in parish center. All 8th-12th graders are invited! Follow the Youth Group on Instagram, username: 'stbonyg' or on Facebook by searching 'St. Boniface Martyr Youth Group' or contact Chris at stbonym@gmail.com.

NOTHING ORDINARY ABOUT IT With Easter over, and our Parish Feast behind us, we have begun to settle into the summer season. Life for most will slow down a bit; schools will close soon and people will begin to enjoy the warmer weather with trips to beaches, pools and other summer time destinations. For us as Catholics, we have entered into the liturgical season called ORDINARY TIME. While the connotation of the word Ordinary in popular usage is used to describe things that are dull, non-descript or run of the mill, in liturgical circles Ordinary means customary, regular or ordinary. Ordinary Time may also be called Ordinal Time, which means numbered time. Hence Ordinary Time is the standard, orderly, counted time outside of the other liturgical seasons. Ordinary Time does NOT need to be ordinary and should NOT be considered a time when nothing special happens! It is actually a time to celebrate the Mystery of Christ in all its aspects. Some important feasts and solemnities occur during this season, i.e. Corpus Christi, Exaltation of the Holy Cross, and All Saints to name a few. We also celebrate events in Jesus’ life that were ordinary, much like ours. For example we have all been invited to people’s homes for dinner or to weddings and other parties, so was Jesus. The Wedding at Cana is a prime example of this; Jesus was an invited guest to a party. Jesus lived his life fulfilling the work of the Father and promoting His mission by preaching, teaching and sometimes, simply being present to others. We, too, try to live out our callings as a people of faith carrying out our daily obligations as best we can and tending to the needs of others. In all we do whether it is in word or deed we should remember that we are giving Glory to God and putting our faith into practice. Woody Allen is famous for saying that we get credit for just showing up, but on any of these nameless days it is likely that unconsciously we are carrying out our obligations doing our work as well as we can; keeping our word and in the simplest of ways, as through an understanding word or embrace being true to ourselves as we strive to love somebody else. Many people here at St. Boniface live these words day in and day out in their own lives. Two weeks ago we came together as a Parish to celebrate our Feast by the Shore. A heartfelt and sincere THANK YOU TO ALL WHO HELPED MAKE THIS A FINANCIAL SUCCESS AND AN EXTRA SPECIAL THANK YOU TO THE CORE COMMITTEE WHO CHAIRED THE EVENT AND WENT ABOVE AND BEYOND THE CALL OF DUTY TO MAKE THE FEAST SUCH A MEMORABLE AND ENJOYABLE OCCASION! THERE IS NOTHING ORDINARY ABOUT THE PEOPLE AND THE FAITH FILLED GENEROUS SPIRIT THAT PERVADES THIS PARISH! ALL WHO HELPED SIMPLY DID IT BECAUSE THEY LOVE SOMEONE ELSE, JESUS CHRIST AND HIS HOLY CHURCH.

Feast of St. Boniface, Sunday, June 5 World Environment Day “Everything is related,” Pope Francis writes in Laudato Si’, “and we human beings are united as brothers and sisters on a wonderful pilgrimage, woven together by the love God has for each of his creatures and which also united us in fond affection with brother sun, sister moon, brother river, and mother earth.” Recognizing that everything’s connected underscores that we are more than just stewards of God’s Creation—we are related to everything because of our common Creation. So, on this World Environment Day, maybe it’s time we treat Mother Earth more like a part of the family. Monday, June 6 Feast of St. Norbert, bishop It’s easy to go with the flow when life is moving along swimmingly. While those times are pleasant, they generally lack challenge and growth. When difficulties eventually arise—and they always do, sometimes quite suddenly—it’s an opportunity to take stock and strive to become a better Christian, as the privileged Saint Norbert did. A near-fatal storm shook Norbert out of his cushy life and into one as an itinerant preacher who walked around barefoot in the snow. A bit extreme perhaps, but a reminder nonetheless that you don’t reach sainthood by remaining comfortable for too long. Tuesday, June 7 Today Muslims around the world begin the yearly observance of Ramadan, a month to commemorate the first revelation of the Quran to Muhammad. The word Ramadan comes from the Arabic word for “scorching heat or dryness.” While most of us associate Ramadan with fasting, charity is also very important during this month, and many will give to the poor above and beyond the required fixed percentage of savings. Prayerfully adding an extra observance to fasting and charity is a good way to join our Muslim brothers and sisters in solidarity for an end to “heat and dryness” in our world. Wednesday, June 8 Jesus preached constantly about the coming of the kingdom of God, which began on earth with his death and Resurrection. According to the church, it’s up to us Christians to further the kingdom until it’s brought into perfection at the end of time. Pope John Paul II wrote, “The kingdom of God is the

manifestation and the realization of God’s plan of salvation in all its fullness.” A kingdom of love, peace, and justice, extending to all and lasting forever—now that sure is something to work for, by living as Christ did. Thursday, June 9 Feast of St. Ephrem of Syria, deacon, Doctor of the church Saint Ephrem was a fourth-century deacon, poet, teacher, preacher, and hymn writer. One hymn compared the purity of a pearl to the Body of Christ: “I began to look at [the pearl] from one side and from the other: it looked the same from all sides . . . In its clarity I saw the Clear One who does not grow opaque; and in his purity, the great symbol of the Body of Our Lord, which is pure.” Pearls are indeed precious, but belonging to the Body of Christ is priceless. We’re nourished and supported in community. Invest some time in your faith community; you’ll be investing in a pearl of great price. Friday, June 10 Modern life is screened in on all sides—by smart phones, tablets, desktops, televisions. Maybe it’s time to practice a little old-fashioned custodia occulorum—custody of the eyes. Quaint as it might sound, the practice is both challenging and rewarding. As Molly Jo Rose puts it in U.S. Catholic, custody of the eyes simply means holding yourself accountable for what you choose to focus on. If the eye really is the window of the soul, doesn’t it make sense to at least install a shade you can lower from time to time? Before you roll your eyes at the idea, give it a try. Go an hour without staring at a screen and see how you feel. Congratulations—you are on the way to reclaiming ownership of your vision! Saturday, June 11 Feast of St. Barnabas, apostle Barnabas appears on the scene of the early Christian community as a man named Joseph who sold some of his property and gave the money to the apostles. The apostles changed his name to Barnabas, which means “son of encouragement,” and he took his place alongside Paul and other early missionaries who formed Christian communities. Barnabas’ legacy of faith, courage, and generosity has endured for more than 2,000 years. To honor him today, speak a word of encouragement to someone or make a contribution to support the ministry of your parish community. ©2015 by TrueQuest Communications. All rights reserved.
