My Dear Friends,

As I write my last bulletin letter, I keep hearing the words of St. Paul to the Church in Rome . . . "I give thanks to God through Jesus for all of you because of your faith . . .that I constantly mention you in prayer." Rm 1:8 These beautiful words of St. Paul perfectly mirror my sentiments! As I reflect on my eight years at St. Boniface Martyr, I am flooded with memories of our time together. The work of God we have done, the parities, dances, Liturgies, Sacraments, prayer moments and the people who have left us for either new adventures or for the Kingdom of Heaven. It was a magical time for me. I can remember never wanting to be a pastor. I did not think I was equipped for the job. But the plans that Jesus has were and are more wondrous than I could have ever imagined for myself. Jesus supplies what we need. How great is His love that He never leaves us abandoned. I remember that the day I arrived there was a large sign in the front of the church welcoming me. I was touched beyond belief. In those first few weeks, as I stumbled along trying to understand the various aspects of parish life, the many calls, notes of welcome and gifts were for me the Hand of Jesus steadying my heart. I don't know if the people who reached out to me realize how powerful those actions were. I was made to feel so welcome after my first masses. All those of actions created an atmosphere of welcome and kindness. With those acts I was so determined to do my best for our parish and put my heart into all I did. Those first open meetings were the blueprint for what I wanted us to do together as we furthered the Kingdom of God. As the parish began to grow and our financial worries became manageable, I knew that Jesus was working through each of you. The time, talent and treasure that you shared so freely allowed us to take the next step as we built on the foundations and layers of all who have come before us. As new needs of the parish were made known, the generosity of our people allowed us to meet those needs and minister in the Name of Jesus. We have seen such growth in our parish that it is evident that the Power of the Holy Spirit (whose image is now over our altar) was and is alive and at work. What joy there is in the power of God! Most pastors think their parish is the best. I am certainly no exception. There is so much that is beautiful and encouraging here. One attribute has always stood out in my mind, the welcoming spirit that is so prevalent at our Liturgies. Many of my friends have commented on this during their visits. This spirit of welcome has been the impetuous for many of those who decided to enter the R.C.I.A. and become part of our Catholic Community. Pope Francis encourages us to take that welcome spirit of Jesus and bring it to our communities . . . you do this so well. Be proud of that and continue to make it the keystone of Liturgy. I have tried, in my time as your pastor, to bring the Gospel of Jesus and as best as I could. To respond as He Himself would. I know there are times I have failed and maybe acted outside of Jesus. For those times that I may have hurt or offended anyone, I ask for your forgiveness. If I have forgotten to thank or acknowledge anyone for their work and ministry know that is my weak human frailty because I am ever constantly aware and offer thanks for the many gifts shared in our parish. Now a new pastor is coming to continue the journey with you. I ask you to welcome, encourage and support Fr. Kevin Dillon as you did me. If he feels your love and support he will put his heart into the parish and you will all do wonderful things in this next layer of the foundation.

Thank you for being the face of Jesus; for your support, love and encouragement. Thank you for being YOU. I will miss St. Boniface Martyr more than you will ever know. Even as sad as it is to leave, I am encouraged that Jesus and Mary His Mother, who have always sustained me, will continue to do so in my new assignment. Let us all always turn Jesus who loves and blesses us. Know that in the moments when life feels cold or lonely I will wrap around me, like a well worn and beloved blanket, the memory of our parish and all of you. Those memories will always warm the chill and bring a smile as I recall your faces. As there was a sign of welcome at my coming . . . there is a new sign at my departure. I hope those words are true, for its what I truly ever wanted . . . to be a shepherd after the heart of Jesus. PRAISE BE JESUS CHRIST IN ALL THINGS. Fr. Bob (and my dog Max) P.S. Feel free to visit me at St. Mary's!

Twelfth Sunday in Ordinary Time, June 21, 2015 Jesus called his first disciples along the shores of the Sea of Galilee to be “fishers of men,” so it’s only natural that Christians place importance on the imagery of the sea. One of the earliest symbols of Christ is the fish. The anchor, a symbol of safety and strength, was combined with the cross to form another Christian symbol. The ship is a symbol of the church, and the seashell is a symbol of Baptism. Ponder these rich metaphors of the sea and how God’s wondrous watery creation inspires you to understand your faith. Monday, June 22 Feast of St. Paulinus of Nola, St. John Fisher and St. Thomas More Who wouldn’t want to live in an ideal society? Saint Thomas More shared his vision of what that would be like in his famous novel Utopia. Of course, this idea has many antecedents in the Judeo-Christian tradition from which More’s idea derived: the Garden of Eden, Promised Land, kingdom of God, and heaven. Unfortunately, More lived in a society far from ideal under the turbulent reign of England’s King Henry VIII, who had More beheaded for treason. Work toward creating a better society in the here and now with the ideals of your faith. Tuesday, June 23 “Charity is love received and given. It is ‘grace.’ ” These words from Pope Benedict’s final encyclical Caritas in Veritate (Charity in Truth) speak to the power of love to call forth charity in all you do. That is the basis of the church’s entire social teaching— the “proclamation of the truth of Christ’s love in society.” By giving and receiving the grace of God’s love, you live to serve the truth. This is a narrow road to travel to goodness, but it promises a better person and a better society. Love like you mean it today—in a grace-filled way that’ll change the world! Wednesday, June 24 Solemnity of the Nativity of St. John the Baptist Dating to the early Middle Ages and falling close to the summer solstice, “Saint John’s Day” attracted customs that mix Christian and non-Christian elements. “Saint John’s fires” are bonfires lit on hilltops on the eve of the feast. St. John’s Wort, an herb said to have healing powers, is plucked during

the night of the feast. Straw figures are thrown into the flames and loud noises are made to drive demons away. As with Halloween, which announces All Saints Day, Saint John’s Eve announces the day to come, and the quaint customs can be seen for the deeper truths they point to—in this case, John’s announcement that really good news was on the way! Thursday, June 25 Everyone has a story to tell and many stories bear witness to the resilience of humanity. When we encounter people who exhibit strength in adversity, we often stand in awe at their ability to carry on. Institutions, leaders, or jobs may fail them. Illness may limit them. Loved ones may disappoint. But those who know that the Lord is their rock and foundation manifest a capacity for joy in the midst of heartache or struggle. Imagine yourself atop a massive rock and surrender your worries to the Lord. Friday, June 26 Fear isn’t usually a good thing. It can keep you from speaking up or taking risks. Yet, fear of the Lord is held up as an ideal. Why would you be afraid of the God who loves you? God doesn’t want you to live in fear. This fear is less about discomfort and anxiety than awe and reverence. God’s covenant is built on this: the promise of good to those who fear him. It’s a healthy fear—a respect for the enormousness of God’s loving power. Take a moment today to be inspired by all that holy fear calls you to. Saturday, June 27 Feast of St. Cyril of Alexandria Cyril of Alexandria was central to the “working out” in the fourth century of the relationship of each member of the Trinity, a process not without literal battles and bloodshed between believers—orthodox Christians vs. Nestorians, for example—who believed in the Trinity, but in different ways. Not even saints are immune from ill-expressed emotions, poor judgments, and violent disagreements. Pray today that believers of various religious backgrounds not use their own vision of truth as a reason to attack and destroy each other, but rather to seek unity. As Cyril put it, “Because of our kinship with the Word made flesh we are [all children] of God.” ©2014 by TrueQuest Communications. Reprinted with permission from TakeFiveForFaith.com.
