Dear Parishioners, "Mend your ways. Encourage one another. Live in harmony and peace and the God of love and peace will be with you." II Cor 13:11 As we again enter into Ordinary Time within the Life of the Church, we celebrate the wondrous Solemnity of The Most Blessed Trinity: the belief that there are Three Divine persons, Father Son and Holy Spirit, contained in the One God-Head. Without going deeper, it may seem to some that we believe in "three gods", but as we know, that is not the truth of the Trinity. Three distinct persons with three distinct "functions", if you will, make up the Holy Trinity. The Father is best seen as the creator and sustainer of life. The Son, Jesus, is our Redeemer who shows us the path to the Father. The Holy Spirit is the power of God who enlivens faith within us and gives us the grace to live the faith. The Trinity exists as three separate persons contained as One God. Greater minds than mine have attempted to explain the Trinity. But in the end, it is simply a mystery that at this time may be beyond our grasp. St. Patrick of Ireland used the shamrock as a symbol of the relationship of the Trinity. While each leaf is separate and distinct they are also dependent on each other to make one plant. And so it is with the relationship of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. They are three Persons yet depend on each other. That dependence is through the power of the love that flows through and in each. Confusing I know, so let us look to the Scriptures of the day for a better idea of what this means for our lives as believers. St. Paul exhorts us to live in a relationship of harmony and peace. That peace and harmony is the key to the Trinity. Peace and harmony come when we know that the path we are living is the one that God has chosen for us. The Gospel reminds us that God sent Jesus into the world so we may believe in Him and have eternal life. That faith in Jesus is embracing a way of life that calls us to a dependency on the God in Three Persons. When we give our lives to God we cannot help but want to share that love with one another. Certainly that means bearing witness to Jesus but also in the way we love each other as the Father, Son and Holy Spirit live out that love in their relationship. As all things for us as believers, love is the key. A love that is expressed in service and compassion. As separate as we are, it is love that binds us as ONE BODY. When we attempt this in our lives then, as St. Paul says, "The God of love and peace will be with us." So even if we cannot comprehend the mystery of the Most Blessed Trinity, we can surely attempt to live their example. A reminder to all parishioners that while parking for Mass, please respect the property of our neighbors by obeying all traffic and parking laws. Parishioners have been ticketed for blocking the driveways of our neighbors. Thank you In the love of the Trinity, Fr. Bob

Catholics for Freedom of Religion EducaƟng and AdvocaƟng for Freedom of Religion for All

June 15, 2014

America’s First Freedom: Religious Liberty And so – will we allow America’s Freedom of Religion to end...not with a bang, but with a whimper? Our freedom of religion is being regulated into a mere freedom to worship, which confines faith and worship, religious morals and principles within the four walls of the church, well out of public discourse and the public square. Our first amendment Religious Liberty has been broached; but not with blood in the streets, troops tearing religious symbols from churches and citizens murdered for their faith as was done most recently in Egypt and Syria. This unprecedented, unconstitutional denial of the right of Americans to practice their conscience in their community came with the Aug 1st, 2012, imposition of the new healthcare law’s Health and Human Services mandate which imposes secular ideology over the religious-based conscience rights of all Americans. As of that date, all private employers were required to bend to the HHS mandate to provide or facilitate contraception, sterilization and abortion-inducing drugs as part of their employees’ insurance. The religious beliefs of those employers are grievously denied in a way not imagined in the 222 years our 1st amendment has protected Freedom of Religion. Many Catholic institutions are also subject to the mandate because they are not deemed to be “religious enough” to be exempted. Will the Little Sisters of the Poor be forced out of their ministry to the elderly poor? Will our Catholic schools, hospitals and charities close their doors to avoid violating the consciences of all Catholics involved or be bankrupted out of existence by crushing fines? The Fortnight For Freedom, June 21 to July 4, reminds us to pray for the preservation of religious liberty and offers opportunities to learn the issues involved. It comes to us, in this place and time, to inform ourselves and make it clear to those who would tell us how much of our religious beliefs we may follow, that we will not surrender our freedom. As Bishop Murphy has said, “W e will not compromise our faith. W e will not accept rules and regulations that violate our consciences or impose acƟons and pracƟces that go against the moral teachings of our faith and our Church. We will not bend our knees to the false gods of secularism. We will not allow Caesar to re-define our faith or banish us, our Church or other religious faiths, from the public square to the shadows of our cities or the walled gardens of our inner selves. AND WE WILL NOT GIVE UP OR GIVE IN!” Fortnight events in the Diocese of Rockville Centre include: Bishop Murphy will celebrate the opening Mass which marks the beginning of the Fortnight on June 21 at 5pm at the St. Agnes Cathedral, 29 Quealy Pl, Rockville Centre, NY 11570. Father Philip K. Eichner, President of Kellenberg High School and Chairman of the Board of the Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights will be the dis nguished guest speaker of Catholics for Freedom of Religion on Wed., June 25, 7:00pm at the Seminary of the Immaculate Concep on, 440 West Neck Road, Hun ngton, NY 11743 The second annual rally, “Religious Freedom: Our First Amendment Right” will be held Sat., June 28 at 10am in the auditorium of St. John the Bap st High School, 1170 Montauk Hwy, West Islip, NY 11795. You are invited to join in praying the Rosary in public prayer and witness in front of the school a er the rally. Bishop Brennan will celebrate the closing Mass of the Fortnight at 12:15pm on July 4 at the St. Agnes Cathedral, 29 Quealy Pl, Rockville Centre, NY 11570. Check your church bulle n and www.LICatholic.org for addi onal events during the Fortnight For Freedom.

Take Five for Faith Sunday, June 15, 2014: Solemnity of The Holy Trinity The Trinity is the central mystery of the faith—but it’s no ordinary mystery that Agatha Christie or anyone else can solve! The Trinity is one of the “mysteries that are hidden in God, which can never be known unless they are revealed by God” (Catechism of the Catholic Church, no. 237). So how is it possible to access this mystery? In addition to learning more through the Catechism and scripture, you can draw closer through prayer. Next time you pray the Sign of the Cross, allow yourself to enter into this mystery in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

Monday, June 16 In order to accuse someone of wrongdoing in biblical times, you had to produce at least two and often three witnesses who would substantiate your claims. The notion of “due process” is embedded in this tradition— that no one should accuse lightly, and the accused should be presumed innocent until proven guilty by strong evidence. What’s good for a court of law is also good for your personal life. Before jumping to conclusions or criticizing someone, ask yourself if you have given them due process in the courtroom of your heart.

Tuesday, June 17 As we settle in to the perfect days of summer, at least in northern climes, it is a good time to explore the spirituality of perfection. Does being perfect in a spiritual sense mean being flawless? In most major religions, the answer to that worrisome question is no. Spiritual perfection is usually something more along the lines of striving to embody the truths of a particular faith. For Christians perfection has to do with the integrity of our words and deeds: Put simply, to speak knowingly of God’s love requires showing love for others.

Wednesday, June 18 With the seasons of Lent and Easter behind us, the last thing on your mind may be the practices of fasting, almsgiving, and prayer. Those, however, should be part of a Christian’s life year-round, not only during those times especially devoted to cultivating them. Every day presents opportunities to become more prayerful, generous, and focused on God. You are called to live in Lent’s spirit of hope and repentance and Easter’s joy all the time.

Thursday, June 19: Memorial of St. Romuald Although not as well-known as the vocations of married, ordained, or religious life, the “eremitical” way of life is for people who are called to a life of solitude. They make public vows and are formally connected to the church through a diocesan bishop. Hermits have a rich tradition in the church—think Julian of Norwich or Saint Romuald who founded the Camaldolese order in the 11th century for hermits desiring to follow Benedictine spirituality. Want to meet a modern-day hermit? Check out Stillsong Hermitage online at notesfromstillsong.blogspot.com.

Friday, June 20 At many times throughout human history, change was a dirty word. There was security in things not changing. When something did change, people tried to undo it and go back to the old ways. Of course that attitude didn’t stop change from happening anyway. But it was still resisted. Some in the church fear change while others push it. The reality, however, is where it usually is: in the middle. The basic message, the gospel, does not change, but ways of communicating it do. Keep that in mind in this exciting time in the church’s history.

Saturday, June 21: Memorial of St. Aloysius Gonzaga, religious Born to an aristocratic family in Italy, young Saint Aloysius renounced his wealth and privilege and joined the Society of Jesus (the Jesuits). While still a student he died in 1591 at age 23 as a result of caring for the victims of an epidemic. When the good die young, they provide a wake-up call. What will you do with the precious time given to you? Accomplish as much good as possible today. ©2014 by TrueQuest Communications. All rights reserved.
