Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ: As Bishop of the Diocese of Rockville Centre for the past 15 years, I have had the great honor and privilege of serving and ministering to our Catholic family on Long Island. Witnessing first hand your incredible generosity, I thank you. Because of your commitment, our Diocese is able to support critical charitable, educational and spiritual ministries which bring the light of the Lord to more than 600,000 people each year, including new initiatives that truly highlight what we can only do with your support. We are continually developing programs for our young people who are so important for the future vitality of our Church. On College Campuses across Long Island, a new program was recently created called the Newman Connection. Its purpose is to give high school students the ability to locate a Catholic presence on their new college campuses even before leaving home for college. Working with high schools and parishes - in its first year more than 2,000 students connected through this innovative program. Our Vocation Office works closely with pastors, high school and college chaplains, sports and youth groups, teachers and families to reach out to young men who are discerning a call to serve as Priests in our Diocese. Throughout 2016 these many efforts included a monthly Diocesan Holy Hour for Vocations, which more than 600 young people regularly attended.

Our Office of Faith Formation continues to develop religious education programs and training to enhance their work with local parishes and their catechetical leaders to better serve the more than 100,000 youngsters from the first grade through the time they receive the Sacrament of Confirmation. These are just some of the programs that you make possible and we are so deeply grateful for your extraordinary sacrifices to support the work of our Church. There is still so much more we can accomplish together, and I ask you to join with me in making a gift to the 2017 Catholic Ministries Appeal, and in welcoming our new Bishop, Most Reverend John Barres to our wonderful community. Your generosity and commitment fills me with confidence that many wonderful things will continue to take place in our Diocese as we bring the light of the Lord to others. With my prayers and gratitude, I am Sincerely yours in Christ,

Apostolic Administrator

Take Five for Faith Third Sunday in Ordinary Time, January 22 Do you feel different this year? What insights have you gained over the past 12 months? In what ways have you changed? What areas in your life need your attention? You may feel like resting for a while. But remember, you can’t stand in one place indefinitely and be a disciple of Jesus. Christianity requires transformation and conversion, and these changes can take a lifetime. Invest in the resources (people, periodicals, books, and worship) that will serve as your walking shoes on your never-ending spiritual journey. Monday, January 23 Memorial of St. Vincent of Saragossa Saint Vincent of fourth-century Saragossa is one of the most famous deacons of all time. As a deacon he participated in one of the oldest ministries of church: diakonia. Diakonos is the Greek word for “minister” or “helper,” and it was first used in Acts 6:1-6 to describe the people needed to facilitate the apostles’ ministry. Learn more about the vocation and ministry of deacons on the U.S. Catholic Bishops’ website. Tuesday, January 24 Memorial of St. Francis de Sales Back in the day of Saint Francis de Sales (15671622), print publications were the emerging technology. De Sales is considered patron of Catholic writers and journalists because he made innovative use of the new technology, developing flyers and booklets widely used in spiritual direction and religious education. To this day Catholic journalists look to him as a model and inspiration, and the St. Francis de Sales Award is the highest award the Catholic Press Association presents. If you have a knack for the communication arts, consider a career in religious journalism. Perhaps you are called to be the Francis de Sales of the internet generation! Wednesday, January 25 Feast of the Conversion of St. Paul the Apostle Saint Paul would agree that faith isn’t a matter of words but of how we live. In 1963 the Catholic theologian Yves Congar wrote an essay in which he observed how unity is fostered more by personal contacts than formal decrees. Congar dreamed of a research center in which Catholic, Orthodox, Anglican, and Protestant students would publish great church histories—but only after all of them could sign his or her name to each volume. How

different would history sound if written by collaborators rather than partisans? Thursday, January 26 Memorials of St. Timothy and St. Titus Though the letters of Saint Paul to Timothy and Titus were written by someone other than Paul long after Timothy and Titus were dead, the church honors these companions of Paul’s because of the significant influence they had in shaping the early Christian community. They were revered followers of Jesus’ way and remained loyal and trustworthy friends to Paul even during the most difficult times. Friendship is the primary Christian relationship. Jesus calls his disciples—including you—his friends. How have you acknowledged this friendship? Friday, January 27 Memorial of St. Angela Merici Saint Angela Merici didn’t set out to form a typical religious community of women. An orphan herself, she began by giving religious instruction to the poor children of her neighbors. Before long, other women were attracted to join her. By the time she was 50, she began a community of women called the Ursulines, who embraced virginity, poverty, and obedience. But they took no formal vows. They didn’t formally congregate as a religious community either, but stayed at home to evangelize their family, friends, and neighbors. Evangelism can begin with even the tiniest seed. With whom will you share a bit of the Good News today? Saturday, January 28 Memorial of St. Thomas Aquinas Thomas Aquinas was born in 1225 at his family’s castle near Naples, Italy. Despite many social and political opportunities, he chose to join the Dominican friars when he was 19—much to his family’s dismay and anger. Thomas went on to become one of the greatest of Christian scholars, known for bringing together ancient philosophies with Christian theology and systematizing the whole of the church’s wisdom and teachings. Pray for spiritual aid today using Thomas’ own prayer: “Grant me, O Lord my God, a mind to know you, a heart to seek you, wisdom to find you, conduct pleasing to you, faithful perseverance in waiting for you, and a hope of finally embracing you.” - Reprinted with permission from TakeFiveForFaith.com

Week of Prayer for Christian Unity Jan. 18-25 Ecumenical week focuses on overcoming division VATICAN CITY (CNS) -- When a group of German Christians was asked in 2014 to prepare materials for the 2017 Week of Prayer for Christian Unity, their choice of a "wall" as a symbol of sin, evil and division explicitly referred to the Berlin Wall. The German reflections on the power of prayer to bring down walls and the Gospel call to reconciliation were adopted by the World Council of Church's Faith and Order Commission and the Vatican's Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity and proposed to Christians worldwide for the Jan. 18-25 octave of prayer. "The image of the wall is very current today -- now more than when they wrote the reflection," said Father Anthony Currer, who coordinates the Vatican contribution to the week of prayer. The theme for 2017 is: "Reconciliation -- love of Christ compels us."

Founders' letters, icon, help students begin celebration of 200th anniversary of Marianists

The Society of Mary – the Marianists, a religious order of priests and brothers that run Chaminade High School, Mineola, and Kellenberg Memorial High School and St. Martin de Porres Marianist School, both in Uniondale, has begun a year-long celebration of its bicentennial. While October 2, 1817 marks the official date of the order’s creation, recognition of the jubilee started with the arrival of an icon of the Wedding Feast at Cana at the schools this month giving students the opportunity to pray and reflect before the icon and original letters from Marianist Founder Blessed William Joseph Chaminade and Venerable Adele de Trenquélleon, founder of the Daughters of Mary Immaculate. The icon depicts the motto of Father Chaminade’s Marianist family: “Do whatever He tells you.” (John 2:5) Devoted to Mary and her message to the servants at the wedding feast, Father Chaminade founded the Society of Mary in an effort to re-Christianize postrevolutionary France. Brother Stephen V. Balletta, S.M., director of the Marianist community and vocation director at Chaminade High School, said, “The icon bears a countercultural message, ‘Do whatever He tells you.’ But, we don’t like doing what other people tell us; we prize our independence. What a blessing it would be, then, if we come to understand that in God’s will is our peace. If God is Love, and He is, then He wants only what is best for us. It is our hope, that as we meditate on this icon, we would come to understand this central truth that God is Love, and in His will for us is our true peace.”
