JUBILEE YEAR OF MERCY: Lent & Reconciliation

“Jesus Christ is the face of the Father’s mercy. These words might well sum up the mystery of the Christian faith. Mercy has become living and visible in Jesus of Nazareth, reaching its culmination in him.” With these words from the very first paragraph of Pope Francis’ Bull of Indiction, Misericordiae Vultus (MV), proclaiming the Extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy, we see the heart of what we celebrate this year: that God’s mercy is brought to us in Jesus Christ. The closer we come to Jesus, the Son of God, and the more intimately we know Him, the more we will experience the unbelievable richness of the Father’s mercy. The Holy Father has given the Church an extraordinary gift in the Year of Mercy. The word “mercy” reveals the very mystery of the Most Holy Trinity, Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Mercy is the ultimate and supreme act by which God comes to meet us. Mercy is what connects God and His children, because His mercy opens our hearts “to the hope of being loved forever despite our sinfulness.” (MV 2) Indeed, this Year of Mercy is a special time for the Church, “a time when the witness of believers might grow stronger and more effective.” (MV 3) Isn’t that a great challenge for us ― that we might become more effective witnesses of mercy? Imagine if we could really do that! Maybe that’s a good Lenten project for each and every one of us: to become a more effective witness of mercy! We know that Lent prepares us for the celebration of Easter, either by preparing us for the Sacraments of Initiation, or by preparing us to recall our own Baptism. Doing penance is central to this. However, if we are going to truly live Lent and not just “observe” it, we must make a true response to God’s call to renewal, and accept the spiritual challenge to cooperate with God’s grace by making a decision, a plan and a continuous effort. To really live this Jubilee Year in keeping with its motto “Merciful like the Father,” we must experience the proof of God’s love for us: “He gives his entire self, always, freely, asking nothing in return. He comes to our aid whenever we call upon him.” (MV 14) The Sacrament of Penance is for us one of the most powerful ways (or proofs!) we have of experiencing the mercy of God, and of renewing our baptismal dedication and dignity. Through the mercy of God, that sacrament becomes the opportunity to restore

baptismal innocence, an innocence that becomes marred by sin. Continuing through Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord this year, we will explore various aspects of the Sacrament of Penance, so that we might use this time of Lent for conversion and reconciliation in order to experience the richness of the Father’s mercy and, come Easter, celebrate the Paschal Mystery of the Lord’s death and resurrection with minds and hearts renewed by God’s mercy ¤

Stations of the Cross St. Boniface Church Fridays in Lent 7:30pm Join Us! DOORS OF MERCY In the Diocese of Rockville Centre, Bishop Murphy has chosen to open a Door of Mercy at the diocesan Cathedral, the Cathedral of Saint Agnes in Rockville Centre. In addition to the Door of Mercy at the Cathedral, Bishop Murphy has designated three additional sites for the opening of other Doors of Mercy: the Shrines of particular importance, especially where there is the happy possibility that the many faithful who visit the shrine may always encounter the merciful embrace of the Father in confession. They are: the Seminary of the Immaculate Conception, Huntington; the Basilica of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary, Southampton and the Shrine of Our Lady of the Island, Eastport. These doors, analogous to the Holy Doors of the Papal Basilicas in Rome, will permit even people who cannot travel to Rome to make a Jubilee pilgrimage. One can obtain the Jubilee indulgence by making a pilgrimage to one of the four Jubilee Churches in our diocese and fulfilling the other necessary conditions: experiencing the Sacrament of Reconciliation, receiving the Holy Eucharist, making a profession of faith, praying for the pope and for his intentions. In particular, taking into consideration the spirit of this Holy Year, it is suggested that pilgrims recite the prayer of Pope Francis for the Jubilee, and that they conclude the time of prayer with an invocation to the merciful Lord Jesus (for example, “Merciful Jesus, I trust in You”). See www.drvc.org for more details.

“Live your faith during Lent, perform works of mercy.” - Pope Francis

Almsgiving in Lent During the Lenten Season we are asked to pray, fast and give alms. Lent is a perfect time for us to pray for those in need - whether it is for their material, emotional or spiritual needs. And when you practice fasting and abstinence during these forty days, please remember those of our neighbors who are hungry, and consider sharing your gifts with them. One way to do this is by making a gift to the Catholic Ministries Appeal, which supports programs that help to feed people in our community each year through Catholic Charities and our Parishes. For more information about the Catholic Ministries Appeal, please visit www.CatholicMinistriesAppeal.org or call 379-5210 x 2. There are materials at the back of the church.

ASR Celebrates Catholic Schools Week All Saints had a great week celebrating Catholic Schools Week. Below are some of the highlights. The Earth Balloon, an in house field trip through B.O.C.E.S., was setup in the gym. Students visited the Earth Balloon for a lesson in geography and science. A Science Fair was held for all grade levels. Students spent the day viewing projects and learning from each other. Parents visited in the afternoon to see all the experiments. Everyone did a great job! Michael Sampson, author of “Chicka, Chicka, Boom, Boom” and other well known children’s books visited our school and read some of his books to our elementary students. The 6th, and 7th grade students demonstrated their proficiency in Spanish by performing three plays in Spanish. The 6th grade performed “The Three Bears” and “Snow White” and the 7th performed Little “Red Riding Hood.” Our 8th grade students, became teacher’s for a day! They did a great job teaching to all of the other grades at All Saints.

Why choose All Saints? From an Alumnus: I attended All Saints from preschool to eighth grade. Today I am finishing my last semester of law school at St. John’s University. I credit All Saints for providing me with a well rounded education that has allowed me to succeed and for helping ground me in my Catholic faith, which has and will continue to be a guiding light in my life. ~ Chris Pedraita From a Student: “When I think of All Saints, I think of the teachers, and how dedicated they are to our school and the students. Not only are they excellent educators, but they a re caring people who want to see their students do well. We are challenged to do well and do our best everyday. They take the time to work with us and provide the help and guidance we need, but they also expect our best efforts, too. If we don’t understand a concept that we are learning, the teachers will either not stop till you understand, or they will ask you to come to extra help.” ~ Matthew Small

First Sunday of Lent: February 14, 2016 Love changes everything. Fall in love and watch the world brim with passion, color, and longing that wasn’t there yesterday. Often we plod along in search of our daily bread until home and family, God and community, make our labor a noble sacrifice. Our secular celebrations of Valentine’s Day and World Marriage Day converge today with another love story: that of Jesus for the great mission he was about to undertake for the sake of his Father and the creation he so loved. Make a joyful sacrifice in love today.

Monday, February 15

Twentieth-century American Catholic activists Dorothy Day and Thomas Merton took center stage along with Abraham Lincoln and Martin Luther King, Jr. during Pope Francis’ historic address to the U.S. Congress in September. Francis held up these four individuals as a way to highlight Catholic social teaching for all Americans. Merton was a Trappist monk, pacifist, and writer. Day was a journalist, laywoman, radical Christian, and cofounder of the Catholic Worker movement whose mission is to show hospitality to those on the margins and live out the works of mercy. Emulate these four examples of leadership.

Tuesday, February 16 Years before becoming pope, Pope Francis met an old woman while he was administering holy oil. He asked her if she’d like to go to confession. She said yes. He then said, “But if you haven’t sinned . . . ,” and she replied, “We have all sinned.” With great conviction, she said that God forgives everything. “But how do you know that?” If God did not forgive everything, she replied, the world would not exist. Pope Francis recognized the wisdom of the Holy Spirit in her words and allowed his heart to be moved. May we too be so moved by the wisdom of God manifest in our daily lives.

Wednesday, February 17

Feast of the Seven Holy Founders of the Servite The late 13th century saw the dawn of a new kind of religious life with members living not in secluded monasteries or as hermits, but among the poor and

serving them. The founders of the Servite Order were successful merchants who left their careers to form such an order under the protection of Mary the Mother of Sorrows. A characteristic of their life was to do penance. What does “penance” mean for you, especially during Lent? Giving up meat or chocolate? Or doing acts of service to the least of Christ’s brothers and sisters? The answer seems clear.

Thursday, February 18 Without supports, you can easily become lonely and wallow in despair. In that place, you can convince yourself that nothing has or will ever go your way. Our God, though, never leaves us alone. Esther, the orphan-turned-queen of the Old Testament, is a perfect example of this. She knew what it meant to feel alone, to be threatened and outcast; yet she realized that only God could help her, and so she named what she needed. Today, pray her words: “Turn our mourning into gladness and our sorrows into wholeness.”

Friday, February 19 Advertisers tell us to “just do it” because we’re “worth it.” They tell us we are entitled, deserving, privileged—and of course in need of their product! Lent is a season for resistance—call it holy resistance if you like, or renunciation, or simply being called to dance to a different drummer. Our lives can still be joyful and full—in fact, even more so when we let go of the myth that endless consumption will bring us joy. It doesn’t work that way. Instead, let’s put our hands together and give it up for Lent!

Saturday, February 20 Jean Vanier, founder of L’Arche, a network of homes for people with developmental disabilities, writes that forgiveness is grounded in loving your enemies. Learning to love those who have hurt you is a long and sometimes painful process. It requires that you not only consider yourself, but also those with whom you’re in relationship. Coming to the point of forgiveness, Vanier writes, “is the process of getting out of the prison of our likes and dislikes, our hatreds and fears, and walking to freedom and compassion.” It means loving like God does—and finding peace in the process. ©2015 by TrueQuest Communications.
