Dear Parishioners,

"As the Father has sent me, so I send you." Jn 20:21 As we celebrate this 8th day in the Octave of Easter, Jesus appears to His disciples and they are probably still a little uncomfortable with encountering the Risen Lord. So Jesus offers them the words of comfort "Peace be with you." Jesus gave the Disciples a commission. He sends them forth to be His witnesses in the world. This encounter with Jesus now includes St. Thomas, also known as the doubter. Thomas is very clear that he will not believe the words of the other Disciples unless he can touch the wounds of Jesus himself. When Jesus appears, He offers them to St. Thomas who responds my saying, "My Lord and My God." Thomas needed proof, something concrete that he himself could see. Jesus reminds him that the real blessing is for those who have not been witnesses yet still believe. What a lesson Jesus offers us today. I dare say there are times when each of us are like St. Thomas. Doubts may creep into our minds and maybe effect our faith. Yet the words of Jesus should ring in our hearts...."Blessed are those who have not seen, yet believe." Jesus also has given us the commission He gave those first disciples. We are called to bear witness to Him in all we do. Our Baptism is that pivotal moment in our lives when we become inheritors of the mission of Jesus. As we journey in our Stewardship Initiative we should be conscious of that call of Jesus to be His presence in our world. We have be sealed in the Name of Jesus and as such we should not be afraid to be His hands and His heart to the world. As the Pascal Candle that burns near the pulpit during the Easter Season, we are reminded that we are the light of Jesus that shines in the darkness. And as those lights, we burn brightest when together we bring hope and comfort to a world that so often seems to prefer the darkness. Like Thomas, we can seek proof which may cause us to retreat from our Baptismal call...or become fearful of what making Jesus as a priority in our lives would mean. Then we need to hear again the words of Jesus: “PEACE. It is in peace that Jesus can take His place in our hearts and help us to live in an attitude of gratitude. So, my sisters and brothers...do not be afraid and also like St. Thomas, be able to profess Jesus as "Lord and God." Thank you to all the members of the St. Martha Altar Guild who worked on beautifying our altar for Holy Week: They did a great job and deserve our appreciation and thanks. The following children helped with the Easter Egg hunt: Emilie Biolosi, Brianna Centeno, Michael Gilligan, Maura Lynch, Mireya Martin, Patrick Morley, Ella Oswald, Mike Sylvester and Grace Thill. Special thanks to the coordinators of this event, Lorraine and James O'Sullivan. This week is truly a joyful celebration for the entire church. His Holiness Pope Francis will canonize two previous popes. This is the first time this has ever happened in Church history. Blessed John XXIII as you know , through the promptings of the Holy Spirit, convened the Second Vatican Council. This pastoral council open the windows of the church and allowed the "wind of the Holy Spirit" to blow through the Church. Much of the ministry of the Laity come as a direct result of the decrees of the Second Vatican Council. Blessed John, as nuncio (papal representing of the Holy See) to Turkey, under the direct orders of Pope Pius XII, was responsible for securing boats that would secretly save Jewish refugees. Pope Pius XII used much of his personal finances to assist these efforts. Blessed John XXIII was known for his gentle kindness and deep faith. Blessed John Paul II was a dynamic and deeply spiritual pope. His Letters, teachings and homilies touched the lives of so many. He began World Youth Day with the hope to challenge and encourage young people to go forth and bear witness to Jesus in their daily lives. His continual themes to the youth were echoed from the words of Jesus Himself, "Do not be afraid." Many of our younger priests attribute their vocation to his invitation. Blessed John Paul lived under Soviet domination. Because of his religious beliefs, he was sentenced to work in a concentration camp. This experience deepened his conviction of the dignity of all human persons, born and unborn. His presence and encouragement to nations behind the iron curtain, is attributed to the eventual fall of communism. On a personal note, I was privileged to meet Blessed John Paul II on four occasions. They were certainly highlights of my priesthood and days I look back on with joy and awe. When he prayed you could truly sense that he was in deep union with the Jesus he served so well. We rejoice as a Church that these holy and dedicated men are now raised to the ranks of saints. They will be a wonderful example of the Christian life for many, many generations. St. John XXIII, pray for us. St. John Paul II, pray for us. A Happy and joyous Easter to you all. CHRIST IS RISEN, HE IS TRULY RISEN! In Jesus our Resurrected Lord, Fr. Bob

SUNDAY, APRIL 27: SECOND SUNDAY OF EASTER In the sprinkling rite on Sundays in Easter time you see and feel the water that recalls your baptism. The rite used to be accompanied by an antiphon beginning Vidi aquam, or “I saw the water,” referring to Ezekiel’s vision of lifegiving water flowing from the side of the Temple. John’s gospel associates those words with the water flowing from Christ’s side on the cross. As Jesus foresaw, the Temple (in Jerusalem) would be destroyed, while the temple of his body would rise in three days’ time. All this water reminds you that the significance of your baptism can never be overemphasized. Your entire life in Christ flows from it. MONDAY, APRIL 28: MEMORIAL OF LOUIS MARY DE MONTFORT, PRIEST Well known for his love of Mary, the Mother of God, Saint Louis Mary de Montfort was also an accomplished composer. He wrote some of his works to inspire, some to educate. He even used popular tunes of the day, adding his own lyrics to help listeners grow in their relationship with God. Singing was also a way for Saint Louis to give praise to God. “Sing out, dear soul, sing out, / Let us make our song resound / With a most hallowed melody, / Heaven and all that is call out to us.” As you reflect on your day, what song best expresses your prayer this day? TUESDAY, APRIL 29: MEMORIAL OF CATHERINE OF SIENA Sparks of grace come when you are truly who God created you to be. Take Saint Catherine of Siena. At 18 she joined the Dominican Third Order, dedicating herself—as a laywoman—to prayer and meditation. An advisor to multiple popes, she spoke truth to power, guiding the church through the Great Schism, when several claimants vied for the papacy. “Be who God meant you to be and you will set the world on fire,” she famously wrote. The sparks of her life testify to the fire deep within each of you and make you stop and ask: What’s burning deep inside of me? WEDNESDAY, APRIL 30: MEMORIAL OF PIUS V, POPE, RELIGIOUS Saint Pius V, a 16th-century pope, is said to have been a patron of Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina, a prolific religious composer who wrote no fewer than 105 Masses along with dozens of hymns, magnificats, litanies, and lamentations. In earlier centuries, the Catholic Church was the principal patron of the fine arts. The investment was worth it, as the church’s sponsorship has created countless musical treasures. Encourage your own parish or diocese to carry on the tradition and be a benefactor of the arts. Great art sheds light on the beauty and mystery of God’s creation. THURSDAY, MAY 1 It’s easier to tell people what they want to hear rather than what you really think. You start doing it early in life—in the classroom, at a job interview, on a date—saying things to please and impress, and when the stakes get higher later on, you can suffer enormous consequences if you don’t do it—you might lose a job or end a relationship. In the case of the apostles after Jesus’ crucifixion, they faced death but they spoke their minds nonetheless because the consequences of denying what they knew and had witnessed were greater still. How can you maintain your integrity and authenticity in interactions when others resist? FIRST FRIDAY, MAY 2: MEMORIAL OF ATHANASIUS, BISHOP, DOCTOR OF THE CHURCH Much of Saint Athanasius’ long life was dedicated to opposing what he was the first to call Arianism, the belief that Jesus of Nazareth was not divine as God the Father is. In addition to his theological arguments, he knew how to craft a poetic and memorable image: the equality of Father and Son was “like the sight of two eyes.” He defended the paradox of the Incarnation: God become flesh, which he saw as an exchange between humanity and divinity, something commemorated at Mass when a drop of water is added to the cup of wine, never to be separated again. FIRST SATURDAY, MAY 3: FEAST OF PHILIP AND JAMES, APOSTLES Philip and James were among the first 12 followers Jesus chose, but as with the other apostles it took them a while to understand who Jesus really was and even longer to decide whether to believe he could really accomplish his mission. Philip, for example, seemed skeptical that Jesus could feed the multitudes in the story of the loaves and fishes. Luckily Jesus meets his disciples more than halfway. Philip and James were willing to walk with Christ long enough to trust and believe in him. How about you? ©2014 by TrueQuest Communications. All rights reserved.
