Dear St. Boniface Parishioners, When I spoke to you during Christmas season as we experienced the joy of Christ’s birth, you generously supported my mission to serve in Guyana. I would like to thank you for your contribution of $1400, which allowed me to take this life-changing trip, and tell you something about my experiences there. I left with intentions to serve those there, but my experience exceeded my expectations. On our first day in Guyana, we went to the John Bosco Orphanage for Boys. When we arrived, the children didn’t seem eager to interact with us, which surprised us. We expected to spend time with them and assumed that they would want to spend time with us, but they remained distant. After we spent a few hours there, some of the children began to open up, but my whole group was somewhat confused by their lack of enthusiasm about our presence. When we went back a couple days later, however, things were very different. Every boy there greeted us joyfully, saying, “You came back,” and, “I remember you!” This change seemed abrupt, but I only began to understand when one child started telling me about his life at the orphanage. He said that he had been dropped off by his parents when he was five years old and had seen his parents only three times since then, when they had dropped off his three younger brothers who now lived at the orphanage with him. At this point, I realized that these children were not like I was when I was their age; they were very different, scarred by abandonment. They didn’t accept us at first because they had put walls around themselves, but on our return, they realized we cared about them and they responded with tremendous affection. Abandonment seemed to be the theme of the trip. At the orphanages, the homes for toddlers and teenage mothers, the leprosy hospital and the geriatric home, we met people who had been abandoned by the people they loved. After witnessing so much loss, I was extremely inspired by those who were able to overcome these hardships. Our host had been dropped off at the infants’ home when he was two years old. He grew up in the St. John Bosco Orphanage until he was seventeen, when he started hosting service groups like mine. Now he has a wife and one child, and he makes a living by taking groups into Guyana and giving them a new perspective on their lives by looking at his. Coming from lives of comfort, my group and I were impressed by those in Guyana who had so little but still had lives full of meaning. Grace brought them to where they are now, and I hope grace will bless me similarly in my life. It is upsetting that I could only provide the people in Guyana a few hours of company and conversation, but this opportunity has given me more motivation to serve. Next year, I plan to volunteer with a community of others on a similar trip, and I also hope to return to Guyana to provide medical relief in the future. I am deeply grateful for your support and prayers on this journey. I will pray for you to have a Lenten season in the spirit of Christ, and may God hold you in the palm of his hand. Nicholas Harris

2. What is NFP? NFP, Natural Family Planning is based upon a couple's knowledge and understanding of the naturally-occurring phases of fertility and infertility within a woman's system. Only NFP preserves and protects the full truth and beauty of married sexuality as God intended: a union that is full, free, faithful, and fruitful. With NFP, fertility is observed as a part of health, not disease. It is a system that is specifically not a natural contraceptive. These principles make this system distinctly different from contraception, artificial or natural. Couples who practice NFP understand the biology and the theology of their bodies and can successfully promote or postpone pregnancy.
